COVID is airborne, and the fixation with cleaning surfaces was a lot of hygiene theatre that did almost nothing to actually slow it down.

The market isn't large enough in Canada to create a league that could compete with the American teams for the best players and equal tv rights, so they join the American leagues.

The Canada border situation is pretty messed up. I know someone who is both a Canadian and American citizen who moved to America just a few years ago and hasn't been allowed to enter Canada at all since the beginning of.the pandemic. I don't know her vaccination status but I assume she must be because everyone else I know who lives in America is.

From what I can tell, it looks like their Phase 1 results looked a bit marginal with 2 doses, so they went for 3 to make sure it was good enough.

As someone who had to wait a year and a half to be able to travel to see my mother and grandmother, my heart goes to them. It’s hard to be away from your family during this pandemic. I think it should be a matter of presenting your vaccination card at the border crossing and then you’re allowed to see your family. At least in the US, once you’re vaccinated with the first or second dose, you’re given a CDC card recording this.

tbh, the market for hockey in Canada is probably big enough to support its own league, but it would probably be a problem if it had to compete with the USA for players. Baseball and basketball definitely wouldn't work though. They barely work as it is, there used to be another baseball team, but that failed (maybe another basketball team too?).

Canada has its own football league and all that, but it's a totally different style of play.

You can enter Canada if you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or immediate family of a citizen or permanent resident, just only by air and you get to quarantine and all that.

There are reasons I haven't visited my parents in over a year and it's not that I can't get into the country, just that it's a lot of hassle (also flying during a pandemic isn't something I've enjoyed when I had to do it).

It's not even unusual.

Rugby used to have two five country competitions as an extreme example. Given the (Australia, NZ, South Africa, Argentina and Japan) one used to just consist of teams from the first three countries, that should make it plain that the answer is "money"... although, Covid has accelerated the contraction of that to an Australasian competition.

(There's several more sports that work on this basis in Australia and NZ... I think netball's gone its separate way now but the NRL... rugby league... and NBL... men's basketball... both have an NZ based side as well.)

Border closures are necessary... you can't just not do them because some people suffer. That people aren't acknowledging this reality is why so many people have died.

My grandfather lives in Australia (along with one of my aunts). We missed his 90th birthday because of Covid. I mean, theoretically, we could've gone to see him in Australia (not cheap) but we'd have been stuck there until we lucked out on an MIQ spot (which is even more expensive). So, we did that on Zoom.

One of my cousins used to work cruise ships and he had a hell of a time getting back into NZ (after having spent who knows how long stuck in floating around on an empty cruise ship) because he's technically Australian (he was born there but came over when he was two or three or something and has, otherwise, never lived in Australia).

And my second cousin's in Australia with his mother but his dad's here... though, honestly, I'm not convinced it's Covid that explains that one, but I'll mention it anyway. (That particularly branch of the family tree is definitely seriously messed up at the moment for other reasons, though.)

The refusal to make hard choices in March 2020 is why people will continue to be stuck in intolerable outcomes for the foreseeable future... and undoing ones that have been made is only going to extend that: we've seen so time and time again. (And, increasingly it seems to me that there should've been cause to confront those decisions in February or even January, but, obviously, it wasn't until March where it was clear that Covid was a disaster movie.)

The moral policy failure is in not having avenues (physical and legal) to allow some level of permanent migration... but in some cases that's because legal settings actively prevent nuances.
That it Could be What it Is, Is What it Is

US to narrowly miss vaccination goal

The country will narrowly miss President Biden's goal of having 70% of the U.S. adult population at least partially vaccinated by July 4, according to a White House official who did not want to get ahead of the public announcement.

But the official also noted that 70% of those 30 and older have already been vaccinated a week and a half ahead of Independence Day and that those 27 and older are expected to also reach the 70% mark by July 4.

Currently, 65% of the adult population has gotten at least one shot and 56% are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At current rates, the U.S. is on track to get to about 67% people with at least one shot by July 4.

The coronavirus has been shown to affect older people worse, on average and 87% of those 65 and older have had at least one dose, while 77% are fully vaccinated.

Demand for vaccinations has slowed dramatically, leaving scientists to be concerned about the rise of the Delta variant and the potential for another moderate surge in pockets of the country with low vaccination rates.

No, it's because the Canada-USA border is one of the most frequently crossed borders outside the EU. Closing it to cars limits the number of people who cross it.
