Backstory: Mason Sherwood was born in the south of New Cottington within the suburbs to a middle-class family, where he was known to be socially awkward during his childhood. It was argued that Sherwood had Asperger's, which could explain some eccentric aspects of him, though he was mostly well-reserved to himself. His father was a private investigator, which got the idea of becoming a detective, where he has some experience at a young age, even though he's assigned as a rookie detective. After he attended the University of New Cottington for a degree in forensics, it wouldn't be long until his father was nearly killed by a drive-by shooting, which could have been a scare tactic by a mob family to get him off their case.
His father was forced to retire, however Mason wanted to take up the mantle, despite his own flaws. He never fired a firearm at someone before, even though he was fidgety at the firing range, due to inexperience. Things looked much easier from the cop shows on the television, but it was still hard work nevertheless. He is well aware of the police corruption in New Cottington, however he is forced to turn a blind eye, since he doesn't want to get himself into a crosshair or two. When off-duty, he is still known as the "geek" of the New Cottington Police Department, though he is still committed to help with the law.

Christopher Wilson (though he prefers to be called Chris) was born to a an upper-class family. His father is Jonathan Wilson, the CEO of Oceanbooks, one of the largest travel agencies in the Western hemisphere and based on New Cottington. His mother is Anne Luize, a former model and TV actress. Growing up, Chris attended private schools. His grades were alright, not great but also not terrible. Chris though made more than once trouble for his parents with his wild partying, smoking weed, alcohol consumption (despite being minor) and engaging with disreputable crowds. He also gained a reputation for being somewhat of a 'playboy', regularly going out with different girls. Nevertheless, he managed to escape punishment as his parents doted him.
Despite his 'bad boy' attitude and disregard for social norms, he became enamored with detective novels. What drew him to those novels wasn't some sense of seeking justice or any feeling of emotional connection with the victims but rather the puzzles presented by the murder mysteries. He would try to guess the killer, and his guesses would often prove to be correct. Each time he solved a puzzle, it excited him and made him seek more puzzles. It was like an adrenaline dose for him. He became literally addicted to those puzzles.
His father wanted Chris to study in some business school, but instead he decided to study Criminal Justice, earning a Bachelor's Degree in the field. He followed this with a Master's Degree in Criminology and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. During his years of academic study, he would keep up his bachelor lifestyle; he would party hard, engage in a lot of brief flings and spend lots of money (given to him by his father) in various casinos.
Finishing his studies, he joined the New Cottington PD as a Criminal Investigator. In his time in the PD, he has managed to solve a couple of cases. He has done so through a combination of being very good at reading people (especially body language and what that indicates about the subject; if subject is lying, afraid, etch) and sweeping crime scenes for evidence; unlike others in the PD, Chris can spend hours upon hours looking at the crime scene for the slightest of detail.
His addiction to puzzles has become worse though. As weed, alcohol and women do not excite him as much as in the past, he seeks his 'adrenaline shots' is solving cases. He does not care about getting justice and he rarely feels much sympathy for the victims. What drives him is a desire to challenge himself, to test his mental capabilities, to push himself to his mental limits. So whenever he comes upon a case, he focuses solely on it (often refusing to sleep for a day or two and barely eating and drinking anything). If he cannot solve a case, he becomes more and more obsessed with it and can even attempt to circumvent the law to solve it. He also becomes irritable and isolates himself from everyone else.
When there is not a case, though, he is his old 'playboy-bachelor' self. He still parties hard, he still gambles and he still has flings. He also pisses off everyone in the PD with his personality, which is a mixture of narcissism (believing himself to be the most handsome man in the PD and the most brilliant detective to have ever existed), flirting with nearly every good looking woman in the PD (he has been reported once or twice for inappropriate flirting) and his tendency to be sarcastic and disrespectful to authority. The only reason he is tolerated is because he manages to bring results in a PD in which there are too many incompetent or corrupt folk (though his critics would say that his father being incredibly rich has something to do with it too).

Backstory: Benjamin Rothsgarter was born to a military family with military service spanning back to the revolutionary war and was expected to follow in his family's footsteps. Thus it was no surprise when he volunteered to join the Vietnam war fresh out of high school. In vietnam he was on the front lines constantly seeing the horrors of war and the bodies of his fallen comrades. That is why when he got out of the military (with many honors for bravery) he had decided he wanted to field in medicine, so he can make a difference in the world. Benjamin would get a bachelors (and later a doctorate) in Forensic science and Criminology and would find a job as the city Coroner a job he would have for 27 years before he would retire at age 60.
During his time as the city Coroner he would become well known to be a "cold case buster" usually pouring over details of old and forgotten cases in his spare time and finding inconsistences and new evidence that was overlooked at the time and crack this cases wide open. This would ultimately lead to his wife Shirley's death as mobsters would shoot her (trying to shoot him) in a drive by related to Benjamin finding evidence tying a link between a man high up in the mob faction and a group of missing children.
for 8 years (since the death of his wife), Dr. Benjamin Rothsgarter has been part of the Serious Crimes Unit as a detective and coroner and has been given the nickname "the seer" by some for his ability to find the 'put the pieces together', so to speak, when it comes difficult and convoluted cases.

Backstory: Fifteen years ago ago, Brendan O'Sullivan was a fresh faced idealistic young cadet who was going to fix the rot in the NCPD and who was going to have it all... though New Cottington has a way of breaking fresh faced idealists and it certainly did with Brendan.
His marriage was the first thing to go, damaged irreparably by his tendency to put the job first. His hard work did, however, catch the eye of the Serious Crimes Unit, of which he has been a member for the best part of a decade.
The next thing to go was the idealism. Send a crook to jail and a few short years later he or she is right back doing what he was up to before, only with a new network of friends made on the inside. Then, of course, there are the general public who refuse to help you help them because either they don't trust you or they're too scared of the people you are trying to protect them from. So maybe you turn the cameras off and give someone in interrogation a beating so you can get to the bottom of a particularly nasty crime? It's unethical, but you got a result and got a bad guy off the street - doesn't that make it, arguably the right thing to do? So maybe you did a little favour for someone who is also pretty unpleasant in exchange for some information? Maybe that's okay, provided it's in a good cause. O'Sullivan rode the slippery slope down without even realising what he was losing in the process.
These days Brendan O'Sullivan is nothing like the idealistic rookie from fifteen years ago. Now, most people would say he's a cynical bastard with a poor work ethic who drinks too much, though every now and then, if someone can hit a nerve and crack the façade, glimpses of the detective of old can still be found. He lives alone in a one bedroom apartment; those who have seen it describe it as tired and untidy though he doesn't generally invite workmates back (unless he is making a pass at them). This isn't to say that O'Sullivan is an introvert, far from it; he enjoys social evenings with his colleagues and can be the life and soul of the party... in fact he seems to enjoy the Department's social life far more than he enjoys his actual job.
Over the years, O'Sullivan has also developed something of a good relationship with a number of local mobsters. There isn't any evidence that he is actually taking money from anyone, but are certainly rumours that he has done things that he shouldn't... either way, his connections have provided important breakthroughs in the past.

Backstory: Born into an upper-middle class Muslim family, a third-generation Cottington citizen from a Pakistani family of lawyers, his father was a Judge and his grandfather a successful corporate lawyer (who was also a first generation immigrant).
He studied at an Ivy League university, majoring in criminology and graduating first class (having intended to be a detective from the age of 11).
He then joined the New Cottington Police Department and served for two years as a uniformed officer (during which he was praised for bravery by his Sergeant) before becoming a detective.
His interests (outside of work) include his Islamic faith, politics, Urdu poetry and a variety of sports including Greco-Roman Wrestling, Taekwondo (in which he is a black belt) and MMA (in which he is a brown belt).
He has recently got married to his fiancée (an Arab-immigrant Muslim woman named Khadijah)
who he met at university. Due to the marriage being recent, they are delaying having children.
Despite his abilities and commitment to the force, he personally has homophobic views and is patronising to women including female detectives (but is not a misogynist and despises wife-beaters and rapists).

He's also accepted. Are you on the Discord? This kind of role would require me to actually tell you what you character finds and that would make it easier.
Also, you might find there isn't as much for him to do as there is for some of the other characters, so if you feel like apping another, I would encourage it.

Backstory:Although Florence DuFour (née Newville) has only been a member of the New Cottington PD for around the past four years, her history in the force goes much further back. She served the NOPD for over two decades, and came to NC highly recommended. She grew up in Broadmoor, though for much of her adult life, she lived in Mid-City. As a young girl, she took a sincere interest in the sciences, though her educational history left her with limited resources to pursue this interest, and the arrow of time would end up pointing her in a different direction anyway. Two events defined her high school experience. First, she met her future husband, Simon in her freshman year. And second, in her junior year, she lost her uncle Cyrus.
Her uncle Cyrus had been falsely convicted of homicide, and subsequently executed by the state. This event, though Florence would never learn the full circumstances of the situation, pushed Florence to make a decision that few anticipated when she graduated high school. Rather than going far from home for college, she remained in New Orleans, marrying her high school sweetheart, and taking courses in forensic science at Delgado. A year after her second child was born, she enlisted at the police academy and joined the NOPD. While her children were young, she largely served as a meter maid, but, once her youngest could walk, she decided it was time to try to make a difference, as she had promised herself.
After several years of serving on the regular force, Florence worked her way into the Criminal Investigation Division, where she continued to serve for over a decade. Her children grew up and, for the most part, did well in school, as she made sure to put every spare cent of her paycheck towards their education. Although she had a few close calls, she was, for her children, one of the more cautious officers, and managed to avoid most immediately dangerous situations by grace of serving in an investigative unit. For over a decade, she continued to serve, watching one child after another go off to college, as she had hoped for them, and eventually, she even attended two weddings, one for her second oldest, Cyrus, and one for her second youngest, Elaina. While Simon Jr. has gone on to medical school, Cyrielle has found work as a programmer at Microsoft, Cyrus and Elaina have remained close, and both happen to live in New Cottington. Cyrus is a widower, while Elaina has opted to be a stay-at-home mother and helps care for her brother’s children when he needs to work. It was for her two middle children that Florence resigned from her post in New Orleans and moved to New Cottington. Several years on, she has had the fortune to watch her grandchildren grow up healthy and strong, and has every intention of continuing to do so.
