The prime minister's decision to (incorrectly) criticise New Labour, which without Iraq is far better perceived amongst the Labour membership and base let alone the general public, on the day after Tony Blair's tragic death, is a poor one. Journalists are now wondering if Khan is trying to lose the election. Fortunately for him, however, the polls have been open for a few hours already and doing it on the day of the election gives it no time at all to sink in with the electorate, so the impact will be much lessened.

The polls close. The exit poll is released, and votes are being counted. Ashleigh arrives at his count, and the prime minister at his constituency home in Gloucestershire is asked to appear on the election night programme.

"Mr Khan, if this exit poll is correct, you have lost your majority and the election. How can you intend to form a coalition when many would argue that you have no mandate to do so? What we are looking at is a terrible result for your party, its worst performance since 1983."

“My political party has more votes than any other specific political party. Combined with the Conservatives we have the majority and I have a duty to this country: a duty to protect the people from the increasing violence, discrimination and criminality.”
