Under Yaretenaki law, men and women hold equal status. In traditional Yaretenaki religion / folklore, women are referred to as bearers of life and are seen as sacred beings. While women frequently hold so-called "traditional" roles in society (mothers, caretakers, healers, teachers, nurses, etc.), nothing prevents them from taking part in traditionally-male activities or occupations.

- Women serve in all levels of government, the military, etc.
- Women may demand divorce for any reason and will retain custody of their children except in extremely unusual circumstances.
- Pre-marital sex between any consenting individuals is completely unregulated.
- Clothing for women is not regulated, so long as it covers the body appropriately (the same goes for men).

What is the role/status of women in your nation?
East Asia is somewhat behind the rest of the world with respect to women's rights, though Balhae was generally a more progressive nation than its neighbors, and 200 years of European influence have changed Q&K. At this point women have an equal status to men on the legal side, though discrimination is far from over.
Job-wise, women are still at a disadvantage, as only about 60% of them have jobs while over 80% of men do.
What is socially/legally acceptable in your nation?
Legally, men and women can do everything equally, including get married, get inheritance, have custody of children, etc.
Polygamy is fully banned.
What is your society's view on pre-marital sex?
It's legal, but generally disliked among all age groups. Education about STDs has mitigated the youth idea of it being a healthy form of rebellion. Only about 60% of Quartians ever have premarital sex.
My nation - which is pretty much just a unified Korea with some extra territory - represents my real views. NS stats only broadly correct, trust the factbooks over them. Feel free to call me Q&K, Quartia, or any other nickname.

WOMEN IN THE PANSELIAN LEAGUE

The views and attitudes about women are complex in Selia, rooted in the overlapping and multifaceted layers of social status, religion and myth, ancestral custom and tradition, the law, and the family. Their individual actions can mark them out for better or worse, as can the reputation of their family. Furthermore, views on some aspects of womanhood may vary between Selian tribal groups, producing divergent attitudes depending on where you ask. Regardless, common underlying themes exist with a distinctly Panselian character, which will now be analysed to produce a view of women.

View of Women

At the most fundamental level, women are viewed as inferior to men. From an exterior perspective, their physical weakness compared to men, being smaller, lighter, and less prone to violence, makes men their natural masters in the eyes of most. A deeper, metaphysical perspective identifies the feminine soul as naturally oriented towards disorder and chaos, possessing a Dionysian-chthonic, demonic-feminine character of lust, irrationality, impulsiveness, and procreation; existing in opposition to the more Apollonian, solar-masculine souls possessed of reason, celibacy, clarity, and order. The origin of these ideas are found in myth, upheld as truth, and the creation of women to punish men for their transgressions against the gods, giving bodies to house the souls of men who had allowed themselves to degenerate, thus producing the race of women. For an earthly order to be pursued in society thereafter, the domination of women is both necessary and just, as it allows the men to constrain their chaotic energies, and orient them to an orderly, higher, virtuous state of existence. Women are not however seen as slaves, and their being viewed as property is identical to the case of sons. Where slaves lack a deliberative element, the woman has it, but lacks authority.

Even those who do not dwell on deeper and metaphysical interpretations of an essential inequality between the sexes understand and accept it, relying primarily on the physical symptoms that due to their weakness, women are dependent upon men for resources and protection from other men. Their inferiority is thereby demonstrated, and the rule of men over them justified. Stereotypes of women in Selia include their greater tendency to compassion and emotion, and a strong nurturing character, but also a tendency towards impulsiveness, mischievousness, jealousy, shamelessness, and lust. These problems prompt a belief that women are best secluded away from areas of importance, such as government and business, where their natural tendency to cause issues cannot be afforded. Women who demonstrate however in the course of their lives the virtue expected of them, in accordance with social and familial principle, are afforded high respect by all, thereby acknowledging a dichotomy of natural woman and higher woman, who becomes civilised through triumph over her nature. Because of their weaknesses, it is seen as a male obligation and a duty to honour them, protect them, and provide for them, and the Selians have a reputation for being ferociously defensive of the honour and safety of their wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers. An insult or outrage against them is an attack on the entire family.

Status of Women

The status of women depends naturally on the type of woman. Those born to citizen fathers and mothers, and sharing in their citizenship, are naturally the highest status free women, and within this section of women is the hierarchy between women of lower class and aristocratic families, the latter of whom are often upheld by their kin as far superior. All of these can expect to share the same rights and entitlements however, belonging as if property to their anaros, the eldest patrilineal head of the family. They are the subordinates of men, in order that they might be protected by men. A wife is the inferior of her husband, and a daughter of her father. Brothers and sisters rank equal, unless the eldest of the former inherits the power of the anaros over his unwed sisters, at which point he is their lawful master. Outside of this, a sister should obey her brother when in public, as it becomes his responsibility if escorting her to ensure her safety, requiring her compliance with him.

The law supports the power of the anaros over women, accounting for the popular belief in their incapability and requiring male guardianship over them for their own good. Women in this structure are considered good and virtuous, so long as they remain within the confines of their role, and are thus separated from women outside the protection of the citizen family. These women can belong to a variety of classes, including domestic foreigners; the citizens of the townships that make up much of the non-Selian area of administered provinces. Others include foreigners from beyond the League entirely, as well as those who are in the profession of prostitution, or those who are slaves. None of these possess the legal protections afforded to citizen women, such as protection from seduction and rape in a society that prizes virginity. These alien classes of women are often the recipients of male Selian attention, and are frequently stereotyped as being of reduced moral character.

Role of Selian Women

The role of the Selian woman, as defined above as the legitimate daughter of citizens, is one of legitimate procreation. Her expectation is marriage to a man, arranged by her family, a step so intrinsically difficult to remove from the concept of female life that marriage itself is the ceremony that turns a girl into a woman. Girls receive less education than boys, both in terms of years spent at school and days attended during them, and beyond basic literacy and maths skills, their education focuses almost entirely on domestic skills and physical fitness. At home, girls learn under their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and cousins in multi-generational households and housing compounds the skills needed to be a wife. When she turns thirteen years old, she is deemed marriageable. Though betrothals are common at this age, in order to protect uncommitted maidens against the threat of abduction, it is uncommon for a bride to be younger than sixteen when actually married. When she is married to a man, she is formally transferred from her father's legal power to her husband's, whom she acknowledges as her lord and master, and is given to for the production of free, legitimate children.

Marriages are arranged in Selia, with final authorisation belonging to the anaros with authority over the marrying woman. Marriages within the family are common, with daughters promised to their cousins of varying degrees, as well as possibly uncles, and rarely (mostly amongst the aristocracy) their brothers. When not marrying a relative, women are often married to the close friends of their male kin to establish a deeper bond of friendship. A young woman's choice in spouse is rarely considered, though elopement can be achieved through the guise of abduction. Marriage by abduction remains a practice not unheard of in rural areas of Selia, involving the kidnapping and often the rape of a maiden daughter, 'ruining' her, and compelling her family to assent to marriage. This false abduction involves the willing woman feigning her resistance for the preservation of her own honour, though it is a risky operation, as some families are as likely to avenge the insult with violence as they are to accept this marriage. Her complicity in the dishonour may involve her subsequent killing by her family.

As a wife, a woman can expect to obtain command of the domestic, household sphere. All elements of this sphere are legally and customarily under the full command and oversight of her husband, or if he is not the anaros, then her father-in-law or relevant male superior, but men typically do not interfere in the manner by which women manage and arrange this area of life, through a combination of disinterest, disinclination, and often being out of the house themselves. Her primary duty as a wife is to soon become a mother, and frequent sexual intercourse between the spouses is common in the early days of marriage to try and guarantee pregnancy. The consent of either party is irrelevant in this role, presumed by marriage, and a woman is traditionally obligated to make herself available to her husband for procreation. Vice versa, it has not been unheard of for wives to complain to their father-in-law, to suspend their own other duties, or even to threaten divorce over their husband's apparent failing to have sex with her often enough to induce pregnancy.

Premarital sex for young women is strictly prohibited. Women do not as a matter of law or custom possess rights over their own sexuality or reproductive assets. Their consent to premarital or extramarital sexual relations merely makes them a guilty party in what would otherwise be a rape. In this matter, daughters are given the benefit of the doubt with naivety, and the dishonouring they brought upon themselves potentially resolved by her marriage to the intruding male, thus repairing her honour which would otherwise make it difficult for her to marry later. In rape also, as mentioned above, this solution might be sought, if not with the rapist himself then with a relative of his, as compensation by his family for the insult. The sexual access to a woman by her consent or by force is considered primarily an insult to the man with legal power over her, her father or husband, who possesses sole legal rights to her sexuality. Where defiled maidens may be given leniency, adulteresses rarely are. Divorce is almost certain, if she is not killed by her husband, and in being returned to her birth family, she may yet face an expectation of suicide, be exiled from the family, or executed.

Once the children are born, they are her responsibility to care for. The role of the father in this varies mostly by personal inclination. Some take a strong interest from birth, others only from a later period, and even then primarily only with sons, who they take from their wife's care to instruct in masculine arts, and taking an interest in their daughter only in as much as when she's ready to marry in turn. In this task of childrearing though, women can typically count upon the assistance of her own female relatives, as well as the female kin of her husband, due to multi-generational families and clan housing compounds. Rarely does any woman face childrearing by herself.

Assisting her own daughter, and daughters-in-law, in domestic matters and childrearing, becomes the role of this woman in later years, once she has provided her husband with children who are now grown. In an ideal marriage, love has been developed between the spouses on a basis of mutual respect, obligation, and honour, though this is not always the case nor is it the intention. If a woman has upheld her virtues of modesty, chastity, and obedience, she will have the respect of those around her.

Appearance of Selian Women

The appearance of women, both in public outing and in physical dress, is strictly regulated. The seclusion of women from the male sphere is desired at all times, for the dual interest of their safety and to prevent their intrusion in male activity. When required to go out in public however, a woman is heavily concealed. Her clothing is to represent the house, the moving shield of male authority and control that signifies her status and protection. Because of this, the insistence of female coverage is not explicitly rooted in a fear of unwanted sexual attention, though this is a factor, but rather in the communication of the Selian woman as distinct from the public classes of women such as prostitutes and entertainers who, without protection, exist for the enjoyment of any man inclined towards her.

The intention of her heavy dress in public is to render her socially and sexually invisible to the male world, to blur her out of focus and leave only the public women in the eyes of men. This attitude towards their bodily coverage is highlighted by the toleration of significantly less dress when concealed within the home itself. Whilst rarely naked, women concealed within the home and desirably within female-only spaces therein might wear only a simple, thin, potentially diaphanous tunic. When speaking of the virtue of their wives and daughters, many men allude to them being ashamed to be seen even by their own kin. This statement is made not in reference to a potential state of undress, but rather of seclusion from male eyes. When guests enter the home, women will either remain secluded, or don a more opaque and concealing garb to highlight their protection if meeting the guest.

The veil, here referencing a garment that can be drawn over the head or across the lower face, is an exclusively public type of female dress however, reflecting the curtain which can divide a home space into male and female. Behind or under the veil, she travels in the public realm in a mobile female only space. Intrusion into this space by a male is as egregious as if he forced his way into her home and female quarters. In the home, no veil is necessary, as the physical roof above her establishes her belonging to male authority. Women in dress aim to comply to virtues of modesty and purity, concealing themselves from male sight, inviting no attention, and desiring no fame.

The display of the nude female in art is not unknown to the Selians, and is deemed a powerful, dangerous image, capable of conveying a noble fertility and health, a virginal innocence and vulnerability, or signify erotic availability. This is in contrast to the depiction of the male nude, which is typically heroic and noble without erotic connotations. Whilst the public nudity of men is not the norm, especially in spaces with female presence, it is accepted in certain religious festivals, in athletics, and to a partial extent in all-male gatherings. Thus, the covering of woman as a dangerous, and as aforementioned, a wild, animalistic, and overtly sexual creature, is as much to protect men from their ability to command sexual attention at a whim, through a glance or through a flick of a hair, as it is to protect said women from the desires of men.

In the distant past during the Age of the Pythia, Gallifrey was ruled by a matriarchy with men treated as second-class citizens. After the Fall of the Pythia and the Dark Days of Rassilon the gender roles had been reversed. Gallifrey was now a patriarchy with women viewed with suspicion and a few where even lynched as 'wytches' (the last years of Rassilon's reign were only marginally better than the rule of the Pythia).

Following the Imprisonment of Rassilon, Time Lord society settled tremendously. In the modern age of Gallifrey, women are considered equal to men in ever single aspect. The suggestion they are lesser or greater than men is considered, at best, to be an incredibly barbaric notion. This is aided in the fact that any man can find himself becoming a woman in their next regeneration and any woman can find herself becoming a man in their next regeneration.

Women are treated as equal to men in the Kingdom. We are a theocracy but we don't have strict laws regarding on what women can wear (except on religious activities) nor tell them what to wear, with exceptions like crossdressing and on social issues like abortion which remains illegal, but for some cases only. Women can be employed to jobs/professions that are traditionally to men. However, it is up to them if they can keep up with their chosen career as meritocracy is valued in the Kingdom.

What is the role/status of women in your nation?

Image
"Women hold up half the sky" - Mao Zedong

The State does its best to make that slogan a reality, in duties and in rights. Women are drafted by the military in the same percentage as men do, and have been since the 1930s. Service to our glorious nation is their duty just as much as any mans, and democracy is not negotiable. The law does not distinguish at all, other than to take into account the biological reality: the fact remains that only women can produce children. Thus all matters related to this fact must per se be focused unequally on them, but we try to do our best for all involved.

What is socially/legally acceptable in your nation.

Basically...anything that does not concern state interrest: weakening our defensive posture against the capitalists for instance. There is a considerable taboo surrounding western sexualized clothing styles, while the Mao-Suit is just optional it is seen as decadence and expression of anti-socialist thought to refuse it. Sexism is at least frowned upon and ion many instances actually illegal: disparaging any person that choses children over the workplace for instance may not be disadvantaged because of it, be it male or female. There has been a trend the last few years for both parents to switch to part-time employment upon child-birth, including state posters with slogans like "A happy child needs both parents!" A certain prudism is part of the developing socialist culture of our nation, and youth groups like the Young Pioneers League are still separated by gender, though recently the groups for those above 16 have been more and more integrated with one another.

Also what is your societies view on pre-marital sex?

The institution of "Marriage" is no longer recognized by the state other than regarding powers of attourney and the like: upon a medical emergency for instance registered spouses wil automatically be informed of one anothers condition, but no actual benefits result from it. A group of any number of people may register a "caretaking relationship" after proving that they do actively share the burden of providing for any number of others, be they children, aged or infirm relatives or any other person in need of care. This comes with considerable benefits in tax and financial aid, but officially at least is not related to marriage.

Pre-Marital sex - happens. And is considered very much the natural state of affairs - young people will do what young people have always done. We provide free contraception and schools cover the subject at ages arround 16. We have drawn international criticism from certain religious entities due to said education "encouraging the matter" as not only the technical aspect is covered but also a bit of time is spent to ensure the experience being enjoyable for both parties. Communal hopusing offers limited space for the matter, something many youth-groups have commented upon, and we have instituted more private accomodations on the usual "educational campaigns" of the Young Pioneers: these usually take the shape of day-trips to different regions, and for the older years these now include somewhat more private accomodations than the mass barracks used before - which lead to rather hilarious ideas about the first excursion taken after the 16th birthday when the "Adult camps" are used. Still, the public opinion is very much that "Young people should enjoy themselves".

For much of Aridian history, women have been viewed as equal (or almost equal) to men, serving in the legions of the Empire for hundreds of years

However, the new "republican" regime has taken a much more reactionary stance on women. The former imperial consort has been scapegoated as the cause for Aridam's "moral degeneration" under the monarchy, and this has been used as an excuse to bar women from many rights they previously held.

Pre-marital sex is illegal in Aridam, but has a rather light fine as punishment. Repeat offenders are subject to lashings, but those are considered rather tame in the draconian legal system

In general, women stay at home and generally have the bad end of things. However, in some cases, women are in management and a few upper-level positions, but generally not.

On the other hand, the Empress is female and unmarried, and the heir, the Princess, is also female, but they are outliers.

What is the role/status of women in your nation?
Traditionalist thinking dictates that women are to be wives and mothers first and marry young, but this way of thinking is starting to fade with the younger generations; nowadays, only the older people would agree with this completely.

What is socially/legally acceptable in your nation.
There are no legal bonds on women; they have the same rights as men.

Also what is your societies view on pre-marital sex?
Pre-martial sex is fine; there's no stigma against it at all.

What is the role/status of women in your nation?: Depends on their class (see my factbook on classes)

What is socially/legally acceptable in your nation?: depends on their class but a few things are never acceptable: having multiple partners
(something only women are banned from doing), being weak (something free people of both sexes are prohibited from).

Also what is your societies view on pre-marital sex?:
It's perfectly acceptable for commoners to have sex with their lovers of the same class, members of the bourgeoisie can also have concubines of proletarian or slave-class (but are expected to marry their own class and children of concubines need to be legitimised by an expert).
A social Darwinist nation that does not represent my views.

What is the role/status of women in your nation?: In charge of the family (most English households are matriarchal as the anglicised Welsh ones) but also usually an exploited worker for the capitalist class, like the men.

What is socially/legally acceptable in your nation?:
Anything that benefits the wealth of the capitalist class and the power of the ruling Nationalist Liberal Party, more or less.

Also what is your societies view on pre-marital sex?:
It is expected and there is strong pressure on people to take part in it.
The British Goddess Temple also promotes it.

Women in Northern Eurasia are seen as equal in all ways to men. In fact, the current Admiral of the Fleet of the People's Federation, the commanding general of the VP Moscow Enforcement District, and mayor of Lunagrad are all women, among various other important postings. Women may not be allowed to join certain elite military units that are traditionally all male, however there are conversely all female military units, such as the Norwegian Valkyries. As for premarital sex, our government has more important things to worry about.

Women in Cathens enjoy the same rights as men but a religious culture promotes monogamy and discourages sexual promiscuity. Men and women can serve in the military. It is expected that one parent stays home to take care of the kittens, but depending on the relationship it may be the father or the mother. There are some groups of women who seek to address the gender gap in economic leadership, but a lack of elections or any meaningful political action keeps these cries mostly apathetic.

Fioletovyyrus recognizes four levels of legal entity with increasing rights: inanimate matter, animate matter, sentient, and sapient. The laws do not make any distinction between sapients based on gender, sex, genealogy, genome, biological vs. informational life, etc. Consequently the law strictly prohibits the enumeration of such distinctions (For the programmers, no boolean or enum gender fields in your database, varchar is mandatory) in any official documents. You want your gender listed as "bunny", it's your call to make and all official communication will respect that (Most people still go with the "traditional" options, but noone bats an eye unless you use an impolite term; "Hello, my name is Philipp Ohl, my pronouns are They/Them" is a perfectly commonplace introduction).

"Marriage" as such does not exist legally, there are "contracts regarding mutual support" instead, and these may have any number of sapient parties.

There are some linguistic remnants from a more religious, heteronormative, monogamous, and patriarchal past, but there are active debates on how to resolve those.

Their status is "one in Christ" with men. In terms of their role, they are expected to be submissive to their husbands and can not be church leaders or King of Britain.
What is socially/legally acceptable in your nation?: Anything in line with the Bible and the Anglican Church.
What is your nation's view on pre-marital sex?: Illegal. A man who has pre-marital sex with a virgin must either marry her or pay her father a great deal of money.

What percentage of the population do women make up? 49.23%
What is the perception of women in society? Any relationships with men were considered a liability for them. Women are rarely given an opportunity to get married in their own accord, since they are mostly arranged beforehand.
What clothes are women expected to wear? Aside from the general respectable clothing found in most societies, women are expected to wear what is known as 'light blue shirts'. There are three of them: a long-sleeved blue shirt, a short-sleeved blue shirt and a denim shirt.
Are women expected to wear make-up or cosmetics? No
Do women usually hold a job? Yes
If so, what kind of jobs? Women with university education can usually find good-paying jobs that provide adequate hours and salary as managers and educators. These women are a backbone of the labor force. Also, like men, women with Ph.D.s can work for companies or for NGO's, schools, church groups, the government and non-profits.
Are there any jobs that women are barred from legally? Yes
Are there any jobs that have recently allowed women? No
What is the public opinion of women holding jobs? They want to maintain the status quo.

Traditionally, women are at home raising children, but that was during the Medieval Period of Crossoveria. In present-day Crossoveria, women have more legal rights. They can get an education, high paying jobs, better living conditions, and more refrainment from marriage. However, discrimination against women is not recognized as a criminal offense in Crossoveria, and people have gotten away with misogyny for the past few years.

Most women are seen wearing the hijab, specifically the abaya or niqab, which is extremely popular among Crossoverian women.
