A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business.
- Henry Ford
A full year had passed since the events of early 2021; a brief, two-week conflict over trivial colonial holdings isolated by the vast Pacific Ocean. However, although the unthinkable conclusion of the armed conflict seemed like peanuts compared to the global continental wars of the past, the signing of the International Treaty at Munich would mean an irrevocable change in the fate of the citizens of the Kupferland Islands and Richting Atoll. This was because the treaty that ended the conflict did far more than simply end the war and force the separate parties to make amends-- hidden in plain sight while simultaneously camouflaged by innocuous words lay the nest of the new master of the former colonies.
Written by a snake, the treaty waved into existence an organization with unrestricted power, vague purview, and minimal necessary national representation by the islands it was supposed to help-- in short, with enough bribery and winding explanations, it was an organization that not only could control both of the island’s development, but very nearly its politics and who they chose to trade with. With the Kupferlands being an prominent producer of copper and the Richting Atoll an indispensable source of crude oil for Trenaka, this control could very well be abused to great effect.
However, this new and dangerous form of authority that had descended onto the island was not without a master-- the organization was indirectly and very secretely funded by WURCo., who although helped the insurgents gain independence, has very different economic goals than the islanders. In addition, controlling this organization are five chairs in an advisory board; one chair is held by a representative of the Richting Atoll, one chair is held by a representative of the Kupferland Islands, and the other three are held by prominent foreign investors-- namely from Crysuko, Dernel, and WURCo..
The end of the war saw both wartorn islands recompensed with nearly NSD 900 billion dollars each; but if a tourist were to view the island nearly a year later, they would not be able to fathom where that money went because from a street view it looked as if not a day passed between then and the war.
But alas, that would not entirely be true, for there were some notable changes: the air became dirtier and filled with higher concentrations of methane, sulfur dioxide, and benzene; the streets became far more dangerous, as lurking around every street corner in New Munich could be an armed gunman, clad in foreign-made combat gear and in a desperate financial situation; former public areas in the Kupferlands were replaced by red light districts, which although morally questionable brought in a significant amount of capital to the government; and the presence of foreign troops on street corners, no doubt invited by the coerced leaders of the Kupferlands and Richting Atoll, provided no comfort or security to the citizens of the islands.
This is the result of the Pacific Isle Economic Development and Security Group (PIEDSG) assuming de facto control under the guidance of the former antagonists of Trenaka. Currently, with much foreign investment, the industry of oil and copper extraction has increased tenfold; numerous offshore oil platforms have been constructed or are in the process of doing so. This has transformed the islands well beyond their humble beginnings, but has also led to an increase in pollution, both aquatic and atmospheric. In order to defend these prizes, both island governments have taken to signing defensive treaties with the United Socialist States of Crysuko, Federation of Dernel, and Federal Republic of Cossack Peoples. Now, significant military presences are felt of all three, with the slim airfields of the slim islands crowded with military aircraft of the three nations. Meanwhile, PIEDSG strengthens its hold over the island governments with an endless stream of bribery and corruption, supplanting any form of fledgling legislative body before it started in the new governments. PIEDSG may also have a hand in acting as a well-trodden route for the global narcotics trade, receiving, consuming, and acting as an important exporter in the East Asia region.
This is life in the islands.
Will these people see a break in the clouds? Will they finally have freedom, or will they submit to the status quo, or worse, another form of authority? Will the political fate of the island remain in the hands of the uncaring powers that be, squeezing the island for resources while reinforcing its grip on the world, or will they be cast off, never to return to that region?
That is where the international community comes in. While this is not an outright military roleplay, there are no holds barred to the ways you can either aid in the deliberate subjugation of the islands or liberate the poor sods.
Trenaka and I will act as Co-OPs.
