The Brains get a hard fought win against surprisingly competitive Fortem side

Image

No matter how you look at it, Kohnhead got an easy draw for the 11th IAC and are definitely favored to win their group and advance to the next round. Havynwilde are a good team sure and the last time we played them was a 2-1 win for us but that was a long time ago in our Baptism of Fire. However any time you as the pot two team get drawn with the hosts who are put into pot one just for being the hosts it's a win.

Our first match was against The Fortem a nation which had just competed in their first ever World Cup qualifiers and are ranked 183rd in the World. It should have been an easy win for us it really should have, instead we found ourselves trailing after 25 minutes by two and had to mount a comeback to get the win. Sure three points is three points but was it really necessary to give our fans a heart attack in the process?

As described before despite all the talk about how under Michael White we would stop playing down to every single nation we played against that we should be beating it still occurred. The Fortem would strike within the first 10 minutes specifically the 8th minute as Atkinson failed to properly clear a ball away and they headed it down to the striker for an easy goal. That is not a good way to start off the match but whatever it's only one goal.

They made it two just 17 minutes later with a goal in the 25th off of a corner. Corners have been a known weakness for us defensively and this one was no different as they just wanted it more sending a screaming header into the back of the net. This is definitely not how we wanted to start off this IAC but we would eventually come storming back, eventually.

Our best chance in the first half would come in the 38th minute when Ida Cogginter sent a long range curving shot at the keeper but he jumped and hit it over the bar for a corner that we failed to convert on. Heading into halftime down 2-0 was certainly not a sight any Kohnheadian wanted to see and we knew that not getting any points here would mean we'd have to play perfect for the rest of the Group Stage.

Fortunately we got bailed out by high end talent, this team has talent and they showed up in the second half giving us a glimpse of what this team can become if they put it all together. In the 52nd minute we would get one back as Nicholas Radison stole the ball in our territory, he passed it up to Charles Laker and the counter was on. Laker sent a brillant through ball to the speedy Linus Rallyton who scampered past multiple Fortem defenders before issuing a perfect cross to Korkson who put it away to make it a 2-1 game, we were back in it.

We would make it 2-2 in the 71st just two minutes after we made our first substitution bringing on Stratford for Aaron Korkson who appeared to injure his ankle a bit. Stratford wouldn't be involved in the goal though as Sophie Johnson scored her first goal as a starter. Ida Cogginter sent in a small cross that Laker and a defender went up for it and it went up in the air where it was retrieved by Johnson who settled it and fired a low strike at the bottom left corner completely fooling the keeper. We tied it at two goals with this one but wanted a third.

Erin Maltos would score the winner in the 84th minute with Charles Laker picking up his second assist of the match. Laker got around his defender and sent a nice cross to Maltos who scored the winner in between two defenders. Again it's a 3-2 win against an opponent we should not be needing a second half comeback against but three points is three points.

With the Ponyvillian Separtists winning their first match 2-0 they jump to first in the table tied with us on points.
Group A Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Ponyvillian Separatists of Twicetagrien Canterlotine Territories 1 1 0 0 2 0 +2 3
2 Kohnhead 1 1 0 0 3 2 +1 3
3 The Fortem 1 0 0 1 2 3 −1 0
4 Daehwi 1 0 0 1 0 2 −2 0

Our next match will be against the hosts Havynwilde who had a bye during the first set of matches. What's interesting to note as our team travels to Havynwilde is the destruction that has been done to it from a recent Civil War. While there was once a Civil War in Kohnhead, it was very brief and the Government that won over quickly erased all evidence of it, here there's still clearly evidence. And while you often pass bombed out craters, or graffiti filled walls you just as often pass a person in the straights with hope and optimism for a brighter future. Hosting the IAC is a big step forward as Havynwilde and their citizens try to move on from a war torn past.

Kriegiersien 0–1 Quintessence of Dust

On the way back to the hotel the mood of the team in the teams bus was like the weather. Gloomy. Rain let it drop down. The team was arguing.

"Until now I only knew from Quintessence of Dust from Baseball or Rugby.”
“Yeah, now you know they suck less than us in soccer.”
“That is because our defense sucked. You must be closer to your opponent.”
“The attack is the problem. We didn’t create enough chances there, without that you can’t win.”
“I can’t create a chance if the ball never comes to me. I can’t run through the whole field to get the ball by myself and then score. You must help me a bit.”
“I can’t take the ball if you let them come at me with that speed, engage them more in their zone.”
“Why, you must be more aggressive. Tackle them. Don’t be such a pussy. Better a foul than letting them get through that easy.”
“Don’t fight. That doesn’t help.”

“There was already enough fighting here. Did you look outside?”
Parminder was looking out the window and tapped against it.
The others looked and saw the destruction, the destroyed houses.
“Looks like in the Northwest”, Geraldine said.

“Oh, you are playing over there now, right? Near of New Scorpion City, where the disasters where?”
“Was loaned for one season. And then suddenly the shit happens.”
“Yeah, but that was just nature trying to kill us. But not war.”
“I am just happy that there is not so much war anymore in Kriegiersien. My mother told me about it. Those were times.”
“I think we are the first generation without real war.”
“In Kriegiersien.”
“Yeah, what happens at the borders is another thing. That is as far away as Havynwilde for me.”

Witch Doctor Dolores was laughing from behind, sitting in the last row.

“Yeah, be happy, for us in the far north, the war in Kriegiersien is constant. And we are part of Kriegiersien now, too. But you, the ‘civilized’ south knows nothing about it. Be happy that you are spoiled brats whose biggest problem is if you win in a sport tournament.”

For a moment there was angry and shocked silence.

“Because it is the most Important problem. You may sometimes think a win in the next matches is as vital as life or death. But you are wrong. It is more. For us, it is the same destiny to win on the playing field as for our soldiers to hold together the nation on the battle field. So don’t whine and moan. We have to prepare and a game to win”, Tonya Haudels growled.
“Because he won’t help us there”, she pointed at the coach.

Coach Otto was sleeping the whole time with open mouth and chips in his hands.

Icecliffans Injured; Protests Rage Through Havynwilde

The Icecliff Daily

Bellymn, Havynwilde - There has been significant unrest recently in Havynwilde following that nation's successful bid to host the IAC, not because of the IAC itself, but because of the taxes and laws made to support the huge undertaking. Last night in the city of Bellymn, the unrest became an Icecliff issue as well. When three Icecliffans, who asked to keep their identity private, exited the Koselig Kafe wearing Icecliff jerseys during a protest in the street just outside, they were immediately targeted by the crowd. One woman was struck by a brick in the face which resulted in a broken nose and a concussion, and the other two Icecliffans, men, dragged her back inside the cafe and sheltered in there, waiting until police could come and escort them back to their hotel.

This was met by a huge reaction from Icecliff and abroad. Angered by the attack, King Clayton Rowan issued the following statement:

"It has come to my attention that today, three Icecliff citizens were attacked by Havynish protestors in the capital city of Bellymn. The luxury of forgiving and forgetting this action is not one we can afford. With thousands of our citizens residing in Havynwilde for the IAC, it is crucial that we protect them as best we can. To this end, Icecliff is promising military support to the Havynish government should protests turn into military engagements, and if any further attacks occur, citizens are to be flown out of the city within hours. We do not necessarily agree with the actions of the Havynish government, but attacks such as these must be prevented and the people responsible held accoutnable. Other than this, good luck to Icecliff's teams in the IAC and MAC, we are watching you eagerly from our homes."

Rowan also said later that he "hope[s] that the situation does not escalate and instead defuses without significant injury, damage, and loss of life."

IAC teams have had the option to increase security around quarters and during travel and the vast majority have accepted this with safety as the priority. No statement has been made by the Havynish government regarding stadium and practice facility security, but it is expected that this will dramatically increase.

When asked for a statement on the subject of the protests and security, Coach Wallace said "We just have to be more careful. We certainly will be staying in our assigned hotel until it's time for practices or games, and the guys have been briefed on what they should do if a dangerous situation occurs. We are continuing with plans to play and practice for the moment, but we know things can change in an instant."

As of now, no tournament players have been attacked, but this could always change and tensions are high. Citizens are no longer encouraged to come and watch the tournament due to the dangerous situation in Havynwilde. Instead, enjoy it at your nice, peaceful home.

Take Vikings, make them feudal, put them in Antarctica, give them modern technology, and add the Inuit to the south, and you've pretty much got the idea of Icecliff.

HUElavia Returns to Another IAC with Hope and Motivation!

HUElavia return to one of their favorite competitions, one that is filled with much love and hate simultaneously: The Independent Associations Championship. HUElavia appear for the 11th edition of the competition, making their 6th overall appearance in the competition, as well as their 4th consecutive appearance. This time around, HUElavia come in with a massive label on them: 3-Time Consecutive Runner's Up. Yes, the team comes off making the Final for the past 3 editions, only to lose out in the Final. The team refuses to let this hang on them and look to take it a game at a time.

The team comes with many of the players that were one the IAX squad but with some changes, including some of the female players having names changed after getting married. Notably, the power couple of Marc Navarro and Ayuka Hamada(-Navarro) are now married, one that the country fawns over. On top of that, two Aesiatic players have been added, the long awaited debut of Yamoto-HUElavian Maria Sakaguchi and the Jeong-HUElavian youth sensation of Woo-Jin Sol, who had a phenomenal tournament in last year's U18 World Cup, taking the team to the Final Four. Regardless, the team comes in Ranked #1 in the standings, but it doesn't matter to them, the only thing that matters is to win and win strong.

The team was drawn in Group D, along with the likes of Abanhfleft, Indusse, Otksarin, Quemorr Isles. Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos are one of the top favorites to win it all, but the team must earn that opportunity, instead of relying on predictions by pundits and fans alike. The team travels to Havynwilde looking to break the curse that hangs over them. Due to being a Pot 1 team, they will not play the Opening Round of the Competition, but start from Matchday 2 onwards.

The fervent and pious fans will come in droves once again, as cities and stadiums in the host country will be adorned with seas of Yellow, Blue and Green, along with HUElavian flags and banners all around. With the tensions going on in Havynwilde, the team is having extra security in their team base for the competition, while fans tend to stick with their groups in order to promote safety. Plus, due to the pacifistic nature of HUElavians, they tend to deescalate tensions among the people and just share a meal or drink (or both) together to have a nice time. The team and fans alike have made trips to war memorials around the country, paying respects to the innocent people lost in those wars. In particular, Sol's parents fled from West Jeong after the Jeong War tore apart their city, while Bitencourt's mother fled from Britzen after the country went under high tensions between Nationalists and Republicans. For the team, they seek to put forward a message of Pacifism in nations, especially where HUElavia has it's own scars of wars from its early days.

HUElavia looks forward to the competition and to play well against Abanhfleft in their opening match, where they come off a 5-3 defeat to the Quemorr Isles in Matchday 1. The main squad will play with Lobato in goal and Cristiano as Captain. Fans will take up half the stadium as they normally do. HUElavia will play in their Home Uniform for the match. Here's to a good start for us in another Independent Associations Championship.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

Havynwilde, Melayu Archipelango
After playing with final day byes for n number of competitions in a competition, Poafmersia step into the 11th IAC having a first day bye in an odd-numbered group stage. That means that the players got extra day figuring out their strategies and what not for the competition. However, within the team camp, there was absolutely no mood to do any form of monitoring or watching of the opponents' matches. Apart from Pripet Socialist Republic and Terre Septentrionale, the remaining 2 opponents were totally unfamiliar sides that have presented no form of roster or preview into their team. On the other hand, the 2 teams which Poafmersia have some idea of only presented their rosters after the first matchday, which was particularly irritating for Poafmers who are interested in their opponents. And the results of the first 2 teams have not helped. Terre Septentrionale, the team widely expected to contest with Poafmersia for the top spot, got a 2-0 loss to Rwekazaland, while the other two teams played out a rather boring 2-2 draws with just goals here and there that made it more watchable.
For outgoing captain Danzik Hoboson, who has confirmed once again that this is his last international competition, he really aimed to defend the title and play out the first successful title defence in the competition's history. During training, the mood with the older players was really different, as they came fueled with determination to play out a title defence. With such a task ahead of them, the players are extra careful to ensure that they don't take the group stage matches really lightly. Danzik Hoboson was especially careful with practising on defending set pieces, a typical Poafmersian weakness. Hopefully, it does not play out this time.
Matchday 1 Results
Terre Septentrionale 0–2 Rwekazaland
Dryicor 2–2 Pripet Socialist Republic

Matchday 2 Fixtures
Terre Septentrionale vs Poafmersia

Excerpts from QBS broadcast of the game.
Image

“…Renard breaking down the left at pace, taking it past Barbie Di Bradini. She cuts inside and finds Wong. Looks up. Threads the needle with a beautiful long pass to release Kuroda on the right. Kriegs playing a deep defensive line here to try to live with the pacey Quodite attacks, but it’s giving the wingers space. Kuroda has time, picks her cross. Whipped in towards Ryder coming in towards goal – Olivia Di Bradini goes airborne and palms the ball just away from the striker at the last moment! That was the best chance of the game so far, as Joanne Di Bradini corrals the rebound and brings it back out…”

Image

“…big throw by Olivia Di Bradini, contested header. Wong heads it down but the ball goes to Melanie Di Bradini who passes to Geraldine Di Bradini. Oof! Upended by a mistimed tackle by Okumura. Who holds up a hand in apology to the Krieg players. Referee approaches and it’s a booking for the midfielder. Geraldine up and dusting herself off, looking unhurt…”

Image

“…prepares to take the third corner of the game. Jostling in the box, Paterson trying to get into space but these Krieg uniforms don’t really lend themselves to shirt-tugging. Kuroda, whips it in – and Wong comes soaring in and connects with a half-volley! The captain scores for the Quodites in the 67th minute with a driving half-volley from a Noriko Kuroda corner…!”

A less convincing start from the Sharktail NT team in the IAC 11 tournament. Despite being considered the winning option of this match, Sharktail failed to show a convincing performance and made many mistakes especially on the defensive side. West Florida NPCs took advantage of this opportunity to record their first victory with a 4-3 final result.

On record, Sharktail and NPC West Florida have never met at any international tournament. Coach Sharktail, Sahami was clearly dissatisfied and disappointed with the performance of his men. Down with some changes in the starting line-up, Sahami tried to give the players a chance to prove their mettle ability. But nothing can be highlighted in this match. As early as the 3rd minute, the West Florida team managed to get the lead goal as a result of a swipe to the left of the confusing goal of Asra who was slightly sheltered behind the defense. In the 42nd minute, the West Florida NPC added to Sharktail's misery with a second goal from their defender's header. Chandra left the Sharktail camp with a goal in the 45th minute as a result of a shot from the opponent's defensive clearance. Sharktail clearly failed to dominate in the first half.

Continuing the second half, Sahami took out Fikri and brought in Abdul. Still, nothing has changed since the first half. As Sharktail continues to try to find an equalizer, Batuil is like a thorn in the flesh for Sharktail when he mistakenly pushes the ball into his own goal. Batuil was seen sitting disappointed. Sahami clearly could not hide his frustration, acted to make two exchanges simultaneously removing Batuil and Ilias and bringing in Harold and Alfi. As a result, Azaim swept the pass into the penalty box right to Alfi's leg who was already in the best position to push in for Sharktail's second goal. The situation is expected not to get worse but something else happened. In the 75th minute, Yusri was ordered to leave the field after hitting hard against the opposing striker and West Florida was awarded a penalty kick. Fourth goal for West Florida. With a lack of players on the defensive line, Azaim and Abdul are seen playing a lot at the bottom and making it difficult for Gaby and Alfi to attack. The result of a passing error from a West Florida player was felt by Irfan Danail before making a long straight pass to Gaby who calmly completed for Sharktail's third goal. The real balance game from West Florida dominated the entire field making it difficult for Sharktail to attack. The match ended in a victory for NPC West Florida.

The first expected victory was not achieved. Sharktail chooses a winding path to the next match. They need to get up if they want to move on to the next round. Down against Silvedania, can Sharktail collect points or the management can already count on leaving Havynwilde. An important match before facing two selected teams in group B. Let's get up Sharktail. Go Wi Go Sharktail.

What a game. What a win. 5-4 against a Pot 2 side really increases our confidence in our ability to compete. The fish dominated the game, too, completely smashing their way past as they were in front for the entire game. Abanhfleft has been successfully defeated. That means we can take down Otksarin and Indusse, right, right? They're both weaker than Abanhfleft. Which leaves us with HUElavia. The third-ranking Independent Association side will likely be our downfall. But we can, can't we? We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

We're not going to lie - Abanhfleft wasn't prepared for the game. They didn't even know who they were playing. Their shock only wore off after 15 minutes of play, and by then Quemorr Isles were already 2-0 up. The Box Jellyfish had scored goals in the 8th and 12th minutes already, taking his international tally from 2 goals to 4. They are the only goals even scored by a Quemorese Islander in the International Football field. That's something to be happy about, right?
Anyway, so back to these goals. The Box Jellyfish barely had any trouble in getting the goals, as the defenders ran for their lives whenever he came close. However, after the second goal, the goalkeeper just stung by one of the tentacles only to realise that it had been nullified so it didn't hurt. So the threat of the tentacles had gone.
In the 33rd minute, after sussing out the Quemorese side, Rosalee Caufield put on a burst of pace to beat the Blue Whale in goals to score one back. But the 2-1 result didn't remain for long as the Sailfish shot past like light to score only three minutes later.
At half-time, it was already 3-1 and a massive game was on the cards. As the Box Jellyfish said afterwards while being interviewed, "We could not get complacent. There is a reason why they are Pot 2, and this is just the reason. They will never give up. We had to keep fighting. So we did. And it worked."
Caufield scored another goal in the 47th minute as Abanhfleft came back another goal to put the scoreline at 3-2. It stayed that way for a while, but eventually, the shackles broke. The Great White Shark was fouled in the penalty area after being kicked in the gills. The shot was scored and it was 4-2. Seven minutes later, in the 79th, the Piranha made the lead almost unassailable by shooting a long shot directly into the top right corner of the net. All around the tiny little islands that make up the Quemorr Isles, the residents, no matter what race, were celebrating. But Abanhfleft weren't done just yet. Hiroko Kellerman was still trying his best and found a spot in the defence between the Tuna and Reef Shark and hauled back the score so there were only two goals in it. But there was only two minutes left or the game, and although there was still two more minutes of injury time, the game was done. 5-3 was the result, and the Quemorr Isles had secured their best win so far, way above the 2-1 win in the International Football Cup against our homeland, Sylestone. Join us next time.

Give 1, Get 3

Whooo! Well, at least this IAC things have started well! The Megistians would head into this game very tense, but we would bag the win.

✦✦✦

The lone goal of the game against Hebitaka was scored by Robertson in the 69th minute. Lukovic would shoot from distance and all [goalkeeper] could do was deflect it off for a corner. Fran would cross it in near-post, toward Robertson, and Robertson would volley it, quite awkwardly, toward the far post and [goalkeeper]'s hands couldn't reach the net.

"We played well, but this is against the Pot 4 side. We will need to improve if we want a chance at the knockouts." Robertson said after the match.

"Our next game, we should win." He added later.

The Megistian players were to be interviewed even more, with topics such as Nicola Mentes, the Liga Interstellar, and much more.

✦✦✦

Robertson was right. We should win our next game, against The Frozen Forest. Hopefully we will win! GO MEGISTIA, LOS MEGISTIA, TURTLIA MEGISTIA!

Greetings, compatriots! It’s TTV from Havynwilde. There our national team play first game in the long-awaited IAC tournament. As you all know, compatriots, IAC is traditionally especially tough tournament for us, and XI edition is not исключение

In the first match of the tournament, our guys took to the field in the rank of favorites in the match with the debutants from Sunnyllamaland - and managed to get only a draw, demonstrating a far from convincing game. Only occasionally, in some episodes, did we see a team on the field that deservedly won the love of fans around the world with its fast attacking football.

One of these episodes happened in the 15th minute, Troll rolled the ball well on to Skaloed's and he threw the ball past the goalkeeper into the center of the penalty area. Pathmoor jumped and put ball into the net, open his score for the national team.

Image

Of course, many of us breathed a sigh of relief after that, but did not have time to exchange our impressions in full, as after a free-kick, and apparently harmless enough, the score became equal. It seems that the sudden run of one of the opponents' forwards somewhat confused our goalkeeper, and he, dividing his attention between the crowd on the right and a separate player on the left, overlooked the moment of the shot on goal.

Image

But soon Trollborg again came forward, Troll deftly beat one defender and before a collision with the second managed to make a sharp pass to the center of the penalty area. Two of our players immediately responded to it, the goalkeeper remained out of picture, and, in a desperate attempt to prevent an imminent goal, the opponent's player cut the ball into his own net.

Image

The guys had chances to go on a break leading the score, but they did not cope with this task, mainly because they were too passive in attack and played extremely unconvincingly in defense. It is clear that the defense performed in an experimental lineup, but at this level it is absolutely necessary to demonstrate a different approach. One defender missed a player, the second did not prevent him from making a pass, and the third was hopelessly late to block the running attacking player - our team will not go far with this approach.

Image

2:2, and 45 minutes ahead - this is more than enough to tip the scales in your favor, but, unfortunately, apparently, a grudge against ourselves for missed goals is making our players slowed down, in a game in which one could do without it. Although having created several serious threats at the gates of Sannyamathland, our guys did not manage to score the much-needed third goal, which called into question both the prospects for reaching the playoffs and the team's prospects for consolidating their position at the top stratum of the middle layer of world football.

IAC 11 Havynwilde

LATER, THE ROAD BEGINS
Preview and Matchday One

New Lusitania arrived in force in the nation of Havynwilde this week ahead of the eleventh edition of the Independent Associations Cup. However, the Selecção's calendar would see them enter fashionably late into the action as the format gave them a bye in the first week. With ten groups of five, there are five matchdays ahead of us with four matches for each side. The announcement of the Play-In Round means that, from interpretation, two group winners aren't guaranteed in the Round of Sixteen, meaning this preliminary will likely be the worst winners, the runners-up and four best third-placed teams, though specifics aren't confirmed meaning that the objective, more than ever, is to win the group.
Following the draw, it is known that the Navegadores are in Group C, along with tough competition from Sajnur and the more unkown sides of Choudal, Muralos and United Hermand Insia. The first match is an immediate baptism of fire playing the second seeds, though most fans will likely be confident of some sort of result there. The team is fairly competent as Grilo attempts to complete the generational transition slowly but surely and sometimes controversially. Following his championship winning year with Sporting Clube da Lusitânia, João Palhagueira secured one of the first international transfers over to Tikariot, along with former club city rival Ferradura. Whilst the latter has played but without making waves, Palhagueira has been dynamic when he actually plays. A change of play style, possibly, or whatever the reason, saw the midfielder already being sent off twice this season and get some yellows too, something for which he wasn't as known inside the country. Despite this, the national coach wants to give him a stand-out role, starting him for Sajnur ahead of Paulo Gonçalves, for example. When it came to adressing it, Grilo told the press that he knew of his external record but that "he's a good player, nonetheless. I believe he is a great player and maybe a tournament like the IAC is what he needs. Of course I'm not going to prioritise him above others but he played extremely well for the team in our last meetings and if it's a winning formula or anything close to that, why change it abruptly?". Some have called this wishy-washy argumentation and yet critics have never really been an issue for the coach and Palhagueira is indeed poised to start the tournament.
This edition does is a different landscape from the usual IAC tournament - for starters, the Independents feature a lot more of the "unkown" nations, coming at about 50/50 per group, if not higher, meaning that by group stage's end, we'll likely have plenty of surprises in store. Kohnhead in Group A managed to just about beat The Fortem (3-2) but seem to have competition in the very longed name Ponyvillian Separatists of Twicetagrien Canterlotine Territories (PSTCT), who got their camapgin going with a 2-0 win and hosts Havynwilde haven't even entered the fold just yet. Group B feature Port Ember, TJUN-ia and Sharktail, three of which are not only regulars but also Cup of Harmony competitors, meaning it's likely one of the ones to watch. TJUN-ia did beat Silvedania 1-0, but Sharktail have already fallen to the NPC West Florida-men (3-2). Group C, New Lusitania's group, seem to have Moralos as an early leader with their 1-3 victory to Choudal as Sajnur did their job by beating the Unified Herman Insia. Group D gave another sour start to Abanhfleft in the IAC, this time with a 3-5 defeat to the Quemorr Isles as Indusse drew with Otskarin to keep it all close together, although the IAC giants HUElavia are yet to come in play...
In Group E, a returning Quintessence of Dust blew themselves off the History books for a return to football where they started with the right foot in, capturing three points to Kriegersien, by a single goal. Space managed to pull themselves into a 3-3 draw with a Neo-Futurist Wyoming, a game bookies originally may have said was a whole lot of nothing, finishing in one of the day's entertainers. Tequilo is the top seed to come in this group, as the S.R.S are in F, where Silver Beach and Icecliff went onto 1-0 wins against Thea Liters and Almuzahara, respectively.
Despite decent success, Terre Septentrionale still played the first round where they got the worst start possible with a 0-2 defeat to Rwakazaland, with Driycor and Pripyet getting their first points after a two-all affair, as holders Poafmersia enter this week. Group H will see Reçueçn do the same, but for now The Ice Forest played it cool to a draw with Juvencus as Megistos announced their candidacy with a 1-0 win to Hebitaka. Squidroidia yet to come in I, but some of the ink has already been written on the results sheet and Omerica should not be amused as they were stunned by Vykta 2-4 as A Flock of Seagulls showed that they have the DNA to pull forwards holding off Murphittania in a goalless draw. The final group waits for the Kick Corps to do their usual, but for now Central Shanesville, known adversaries of the Selecção back in WC80, top the table after a 2-1 triumph against Ginadjkrum as Trolleborg drew 2-2 with the equally exotic sounding Sannyamathland.
---
So, yes, plenty of it has had excitement but it hasn't all been fun and games or at least competition. Havynwilde have shown themselves to be a controversial pick for the hosting, though little else could be done when the financial slump gave some teams second thoughts to bid or enter. Nonetheless, we're now here, and here is a place with plenty of developing stories to tell. For one, the country itself is still recuperating, in this case, from a recent civil war, one in which the International Community is still unaware of the full proceedings and events. The landscape in certain parts speaks for itself though as an Urban Jungle of a wasteland is still common with craters and damage of a costly war, both financially and on a human level. Whilst most governments would attempt to hide such locations, the extent of it in Havynwilde, even with restoration and repairs, leaves there to be some mark of the recent conflict almost anywhere someone might look, leaving us and the teams that travel on the buses to gape at such incredulous areas. The tournament is supposed to not only be a sports competition but also do the usual that anything of this prestige does - show off some parts of the country, prove Havynwilde has surpassed their previous incidents and to serve, most of all, as a beacon of hope and unity to the peoples of the nation. However, this effort was slightly hindered when protests sweeped the nation during their period on the Multiversal stage resulting in some confrontation between them and defence forces. Some international fans have also been caught in the middle of it as Icefell fans have been injured, innocent bystanders of a nation's instability, forcing their FA to release a statement suggesting the abandonment of the idea of people attempting to travel to the nation to support them due to high risks. This of course hits even the Selecção with some shock but understanding, "It's a real shame because the IAC is a great tournament and the fans are part of that... they're really a big part of what we do but if safety's compromised we can't risk it, so I can understand their position" commented captain Fernando and yet the FLF haven't made any statements of their own, focusing only on their next match. It would be a shame for the tournament and the nation if this is how it's to unfold, leaving fans to incite a sense of unity and attempt to truly make it at least some sort of Hope that will cause some unity for its duration among nations, Havynwilde may still be a good host to a great tournament... | A.SIMÕES, HAVYNWILDE.

La Gazeto de Sportatoj: Double Header Edition
Muralosian Men's National Soccer Team Stuns in Independents Cup Opener
By Adamo Tanaka and Jonathan Liu
November 24, 2020

On Monday, the Muralosian men's national soccer team made its debut in the 11th Independent Associations Cup (also called the Independents Cup or the IAC-11) against Choudal, winning their first game in a tournament that many worried would deliver a blow to the Hawks' reputation on the international stage.

Just one day after the Muralosians' arrival in Havynwilde, Coach Jozefo Koltakov, their veteran coach, returned abruptly to Urbego as his wife – concert violinist Maria Koltakova – suffered a collapsed lung, requiring immediate medical attention. The men's national team had been incredibly reliant on Koltakov as their sole coach, and indeed, this unique partnership propelled them to many a success – not least of which was this year's International Football Cup championship title.

Players Vocal About the Journey
Without Koltakov, only the Muralosian striker and team captain Adamo Brava was on tap to lead practice drills. Brava, by all accounts, is a competent captain who may very well pursue coaching in the next decade. Nevertheless, he admitted in Monday's post-game interview that practice before the IAC opener felt "rocky," as most of the players felt "kind of a shared concern for Coach Koltakov and Mrs. Koltakova back in Urbego."

Fellow striker Rui confided that, in a tournament with 48 teams, "we [players] worried a good bit about how we'd do, and I had the 'what if' questions in the back of my mind. Questions like, 'What if Coach Koltakov won't be back in Havynwilde any time soon?' 'What if we get clobbered today?' and more."

Despite these stressors, Muralos was able to beat Choudal handily, leveraging the strategies it had honed during the International Football Cup. Choudal's squad was not afraid to advance the ball, but their defenders insisted on making wide, long-range passes that placed the Choudalian offense in precarious situations. Muralos' Ryo Takeda did well to keep up with Choudal's Mark Ramirez, following his teammate Lerta Donaldson's amusing call to "mark [i.e. guard] Mark" – in Esperanto, "marku Markon." However, in the match's seventh minute, Takeda could not stop Ramirez from taking a shot from the left of the goal, some 25 yards away from it. The shot skimmed the grass and bounced into the goal, missing Muralosian keeper Rodion Markov's hand. Perhaps it was better for Muralos that Ramirez’s shot went in so early, for Takeda and Muralosian left back Koralo Petrov were noticeably alert for the rest of the match.

7’: GOAL! Choudal 1, Muralos 0

Choudal's squad was more than willing to expand their lead after their initial goal. In response, the Muralosian defenders launched counterattack after counterattack, with smooth passes to center midfielders Johano Abramovich and Nikolaj Granda. Two particularly successful counterattacks led to Muralos' comeback in the first half. The first saw Abramovich assist Mikhail Zheng in a shot that almost skimmed the post, and the second saw Nikolaj Granda deliver a beautiful goal above Choudalian keeper Harry Stewart's head.

27’, 45’: GOALS! Choudal 1, Muralos 2

In the 66th minute, Choudal's Mark Parker tipped the ball out of bounds, prompting a goal kick by Rodion Markov. Adamo Brava answered it with a decisive shot into the left half of the net. Stewart’s reaction to Brava’s attack lagged by less than half of a second.

66’: GOAL! Choudal 1, Muralos 3

With that, the Hawks focused the rest of their efforts on thwarting Choudal’s ever-roguish attacks, and the final whistle blew as Choudalian midfielder Gary Jackson made a charge for goal.

FINAL
Choudal 1 - 3 Muralos

Ramirez 7' | Zheng 27', Granda 41', Brava 66'

The Hawks play next on Friday, November 27th, against United Hemand Insia. This match, as well as the entire IAC-11, will be broadcast on RTM-1, Radio Muralana-Sportema, and rtmnet.mur.

For the record: The Gazeto understands that the Independents Cup is called the Independent Associations Cup in full. However, we have shortened the tournament name to the "Independents Cup" to accommodate our headline word limit.

Independents Cup Inspires Muralosian Diplomatic Campaign
By Adamo Tanaka
November 24, 2020
(Updated November 25, 2020)

Since last Thursday, November 19, the Muralosian men’s national soccer team has been in Havynwilde to take part in the 11th Independent Associations Cup, furthering the resurgence that fans at home called #MurFutbalaRenaskiĝo – the Muralosian soccer renaissance. By Monday night, the Hawks’ 3-1 victory against Choudal fueled another trending phrase on Muralosian social media, “First the Independents Cup, then the World Cup” – a rallying cry for Muralosian participation in international sports.

The IAC-11, however, symbolizes more than sporting glory for Muralos and the other 47 teams in the tournament. Havynwilde, the IAC-11’s host nation, has faced considerable strife and disunity, culminating in a civil war that ended just two years ago. This became clear for the Gazeto’s correspondents as they traveled to cover the tournament’s events. Their journey to the Muralos-Choudal match took them to an entirely inaccessible avenue, whose course was blocked by the bombed remains of surrounding buildings.

The fragile situation in Havynwilde was apparent to other Muralosians who traveled over as well. Daniil Lee, a defender for the boys’ soccer team at Nord-Urbo High School and prospective player for the Muralosian U-20 national team, told the Gazeto that “there’s a big contrast between the energy in the stadium and the reminders of war outside of it, and it definitely gives me pause.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Muralosian midfielder Vilhelmo Lumin posted a thread on Twitter about the civil war in Havynwilde, bringing forth some of his insights as a political science graduate of Zamenhof University.

“While in Havynwilde, the Hawks and I have not been oblivious to the aftermath of Havynwilde’s civil war throughout the country,” Lumin’s thread stated in part. “We have been reflecting upon the war monuments nearest to us and thinking about the circumstances that lead a nation’s people to fight amongst themselves, including Havynwilde’s and our own. It is our belief that humanity must strive for unity, with mutual respect and zero space for oppressive philosophies, ones that ignore the downtrodden, disparage cultural minorities and the LGBT community, or do a combination of both."

"Note also," Lumin continued, "that in many nations, there is great overlap between oppressed groups. We know from social science that people belonging to multiple groups will face great challenges – unless we work to end this oppression.”

Lumin ended the thread with a link to various aid campaigns, including a restoration initiative for Havynwildian historical sites, as well as clothing drives for those who lost livelihoods in the war.

Lumin's tweets each received between 350 thousand and upwards of 500 thousand retweets, suggesting much hope among Muralosian citizens for unity in Haynwilde. Many also referenced Lumin's words while condemning the views of Malik Loeffler, a far-right Hayvish politician whose electoral victory on Wednesday has sparked unrest in the city of Ravenclyff.

Even in these condemnations, though, optimism prevailed. A tweet by the 20 year-old Gaia Nam embodied that optimistic spirit clearly: "Divisions are serious, but we cannot allow a people to fracture into factions that hate or fear each other. This can and must be overcome."

(Note: The Gazeto has obtained Nam's permission to include the above tweet.)

Most strikingly, Muralosian president Madoka Kuznetsova began paying attention to the political climate of Havynwilde thanks to the Hawks’ presence in the IAC-11. Arkady Lerta, press secretary for the President, confirmed that Kuznetsova would release a statement “very soon,” offering to host members of Havynwilde’s government and other regional leaders at a summit in Urbego for the goals of “mediation, collaboration, and continued reconciliation.”

It remains to be seen what impact international attention will have on Havynwilde’s populace, but the words of Lumin and the Kuznetsova administration paint a hopeful picture in the eyes of the Gazeto’s correspondents – a picture in which sports and diplomacy go hand in hand.

HUElavia vs Abanhfleft Cold Intro

It's that time of the Sporting Cycle once again...

"Poafmersia's done it! They've won in penalties over HUElavia!"

Another tournament has come once again...

"New Luisitania is the new Champion! They upset the hosts, HUElavia!"

The tournament that's eluded us in 3 straight finals...

"Rcecuen's the Champion! The Hosts take down surprise package HUElavia!"

The Independent Associations Championship.

The IAC returns once again, with Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos participating in their 4th straight tournament, 6th overall edition.

New faces are arriving on the team, as old faces of our Golden Generation are retiring, as the team seeks another opportunity to win the major title that's eluded them for over 12 years now. A team that's declared war on an entire competition, determined to be victorious.

What better place to do this than Havynwilde, a nation torn with unrest in recent times.

49 nations and 9 matches separates us from the Glory that's been away. It's time for us to make our claim and change our sporting history.

Of course, this will be over one game at a time. Tonight, we play Abanhfleft, our toughest opponent in our group. We accept their challenge. Bring it on.

It's time to play like we mean it.

The dome rotates with respect to its surroundings during matches for enhanced viewing, though any nearby stars (Stars within 2 or fewer Astronomical Units) will remain on the backside of the playing field to prevent glaring and temperature control. The Dome of Sport also serves as the official training facility for Team Space Team in preparation for international competition and away games.

No reservations aside from host info is allowed.

One day in the books for the IAC-11, people had been exposed to the ongoing issues in Havynwilde - from a corrupted government, to bad government-people relations, some - in the event of nations like Muralos, had reached out to the Havyish government. But enough about thwart disparity, the first day of football had been great across the nation, as games kicked off, goals were scored, and the first official days of the IAC-11 kicked out to great fanfare and festivities. In the capital, thousands walked the streets - we hope in support of the event - in Briarcliff Manor, the president of the IAC Organizing Committee was shaking hands with the Mayor of the city, the opening looked to be great.

Meanwhile, in the vast expanse of southern Havynwilde, a far right part had begun to pick up steam, mainly with sweeping in provincial elections, the head of the party, Malik Loeffler, had gained credibility and respectability, leading his party the Action Congress to power in southern Havynwilde. Far-right skirmishes were not breaking out, even in major cities, the third biggest city, Ravenclyff, saw outbreaks of major rioting as government troops rushed to quell issues in southern Havynwilde. Despite no games being played here, the effect can be felt on civilians and players alike, with Icecliffian fans being attacked; how do fans from your nation perceive this?

Your rp prompt: How is the current situation in Havynwilde perceived through the eyes of an average citizen, where do they see the current situation going, rather, can Havynwilde be saved?

And without further ado, your scores.

As always, the rper behind Havynwilde reminds you to have fun and enjoy yourself.

Icecliff Remains in First in IAC Group F

The Icecliff Daily

Bellymn, Havynwilde - With most Icecliff citizens in their hotel rooms or at the stadiums watching yesterday's two Group F games, the results couldn't have gone much better. For one, there were no further attacks by protesters on Icecliff citizens, thank goodness. Then, there was how the games played out. With Thea Liters drawing with Almuzahara 2-2 and SRS beating Silver Beach 1-0, Icecliff is now tied for first in the group with SRS, the favorite to win the group. Icecliff and SRS both have the most games yet to play as well, putting them in prime position to advance. However, it should be remembered that this early in the tournament, nothing at all is certain.

The next game for Icecliff will be against Thea Liters, a team which has played quite badly so far and is expected to continue that trend. However, as Coach Wallace said in an interview, "Thea Liters is not to be taken lightly. Anything can happen in football. Anything." The Icecliff team has scheduled a practice today to work on creating more offensive opportunities, as Coach Wallace said in the interview cited above that "an extremely offensive strategy like ours needs to score goals. That is our offense and defense, scoring goals. That's our whole game."

Havynwilde is Doomed

The Icecliff Daily [OPINION]

Watching coverage of the protests and riots in Havynwilde, then watching the football being played there, are two very different experiences. The protests tell a tale of a nation at war with itself, while the football tells a tale of peace and riches. The football games being played and the things they represent are the last gasp of Havynwilde. We've all seen the protests, heard about what happened to our fellow citizens, watched a dangerous far-right party rise to power. This situation has all the makings of at least some serious unrest, a rebellion, possibly even a coup. So I'm going to say this: We need to get the heck out of Havynwilde. Withdraw our citizens, take back our pledge of military support, all of that. Because if Havynwilde get into a civil war, we'll waste the lives of too many stopping it, if we take too long to withdraw. Icecliff, get this through your head. Havynwilde. Is. Doomed.
Take Vikings, make them feudal, put them in Antarctica, give them modern technology, and add the Inuit to the south, and you've pretty much got the idea of Icecliff.

Excerpts from QBS broadcast of the game.
Image
“…as Ryder collects with his back to goal. Oh, cheeky back-heel! Through to Royce who runs onto it and splits the defence perfectly. Royce places it low to the Keeper’s left – and the Keeper of the Milky Way is down to cut it off. Disappointingly soft finish there by a Royce to a lovely flowing attacking move…”

Image
“…Rousseau, in space, not in that way, sends a long ball into the box. Ryder, trapped in the gravity well of the Defender of Orion’s Belt, manages to get free, heads towards goal. Amazing save as the Keeper of the Milky Way flies high to their right to intercept Jack Ryder’s powerful header…!”

Image
“…Rousseau collects the pass and slips past the Guardian. Quickly breaking forward, are Quintessence of Dust. Rousseau. Looking for Ryder. Fighting for, ironically enough, space, being well marked by the Defender of Mars. Pass by Rousseau. Ryder turns and fires low. Another fine save! Astronomical play by the Keeper of the Milky Way to keep Space in this game with a diving fingertip save to deny Ryder…”

Image
“…and Saturnia has caught the defence napping just before the half as Space break from the corner. Saturnia, still going, beats Kazama. Bringing it into the box. Saturnia – slots it past Kwok to open the scoring in the 44th minute! Wow, that was out of this world play by Saturnia who deserves a big ring for that well taken goal, but very poor goalkeeping by Kwok who should have come out to narrow the angle…”

Image
“…good tackle by Okumura to break things up. Falls to Wong, who releases Kuroda with a quick pass. Kuroda brings the ball forward at pace. Kuroda, to Rousseau. Who draws the Defender of Alpha Centauri. Then slides the ball back to Kuroda who hits it first time – close! Stinging drive by Kuroda, just wouldn’t quite curl back inside the post…”

Image
“…two players standing over the free-kick. Four players in the wall. The Big Bang of Boötes it is, putting a big boöt into the ball. Curling into the box, and the Explosion of the Pinwheel Galaxy is there to outjump Fan and head it in! A well worked set piece gives Space the 2 – 0 lead in the 72nd minute…”

Image
“…red card for the red planet. Wong the captain will take. Can there be a late twist in the tale? Just 2 minutes of regulation to play but the Defender of Mars’s belligerent tackle has give Quintessence of Dust a late glimmer of hope, after a game where they’ve bossed possession but been unable to convert their chances. The whistle – Wong – saved! The penalty high and hard, a blistering strike, but the Keeper of the Milky Way tipped it onto the bar to ensure Space will win this game…”

Reçueçn Roster & National Information

Image
Sporting History

Reçueçn is only just now becoming a recognizable name in the sporting world. The nation has had few opportunities to make forays into the world of international football, but those it has had have been quite successful recently. Reçueçn debuted in the 59th Baptism of fire, where they made it to the quarterfinals. In their last game, they took Panem, the eventual winners of that tournament, all the way to penalty kicks, coming the closest to defeating the champions-to-be out of any nation in that Baptism of Fire. Immediately following the Baptism of Fire, Reçueçn played a friendly against United RussoAsia in "Le 1er Annuel Tournoi Teikei," which they handily won, 3-1. The nation followed this up with two back-to-back attempts to qualify for the world cup, both of which were unsuccessful. Following the first attempt, during World Cup 72 qualifiers, Reçueçn was invited to the 64th Cup of Harmony, where two draws in the group stage proved not to be enough to advance.

After Reçueçn's abortive attempt to qualify for the 73rd World Cup, the nation ceased entering international tournaments for a long period. During this phase, domestic sport in Reçueçn fell into disarray as well. Only recently did things change, when a young legislative staffer named Jean-Luc Lassalle began an initiative to resurrect organized sport in the country with the government's assistance. The result of his push was the creation of the brand new Reçuecian Ministry of Sport, which promptly reorganized domestic association football leagues throughout the country and got things moving once more. Lassalle himself became the new Minister of Sport, despite his young age.

For the national team, this meant involvement once more in international competition. Reçueçn's first chance to declare its return came at the 7th Independent Associations' Championship. To the surprise of everyone, including its own fans, the unranked Reçuecian national team managed to win 3rd place, taking home its first silverware of any kind. The team itself largely consisted of the same squad that had partaken in the Baptism of Fire and World Cup qualifiers all of 10 World Cup cycles ago.

The team has struggled in the past, due to the rivalries within Reçuecian domestic football. During the Baptism of Fire and first international competitions for the national team, the players hadn't really had enough experience playing with each other to develop the necessary camaraderie or team spirit. Hopes were high that the creation of the Ministry of Sport would herald in a new era. Since the team was largely the same, some of the rivalries came back at first, but the team's performance at IAC 7 smoothed over its troubles and the team gelled.

Riding high on their third place finish in the IAC, the Reçuecians launched into their first qualification attempt since World Cup 73. This time, things were different: still officially unranked, Reçueçn miraculously managed to qualify for the world cup in its first attempt, even making it as far as the Round of 16. The nation returned to the IAC even stronger and more confident; this time they knew what they were capable of, and they were hosting to boot. In its second IAC, Reçueçn got everything it could want: victory at home.

Back in world cup qualifiers, the Reçuecians earned a spot in World Cup 84, making their qualification record two for two since their return. They were less successful in the world cup itself this time around, proving unable to make it out of the group stage, but having only been ranked 44th going into qualifiers, were happy to make it as far as they did.

At the last IAC, however, Reçueçn went home earlier than they might have hoped, finding their earliest ever exit in the Round of Sixteen. This was followed by an appearance at the Eagles Cup where Reçueçn failed to make the knockout rounds. Fortunately neither of these performances seemed to be indicative of the nation's performance in the eighty-fifth world cup, where les licornes once again made it to the second round.

All time record (before tournament): 88-39-39

National Team Information

L'Équipe Nationale de Reçueçn de Football is still in the process of making a name for itself, but if it's known for anything, it would be for its defensive style. This is partly due to the large influence of Reçueçn FC on the team—the most popular domestic club in Reçueçn plays about as defensive a game as you can imagine. This is balanced out to some extent by the players from other teams with more attacking philosophies, but the league as a whole tends towards defense, and it shows in the national team. Furthermore, Gerauld Firaut, the team's #1 goalie, is the best player on the team by a solid margin—without a doubt, Reçueçn's first world-class player. He and his defense form the foundation for the team as a whole.

Image
National Team Logo
The team plays in a 4-3-3 formation, but sometimes the wings drop back, almost making it a 4-5-1. In general, the team's strategy and tactics are solid—Jacques Tremblay, the coach, knows his stuff despite his age. Last world cup, amid rising concerns over Tremblay's health, the team signed an official assistant manager for the first time in Bonheur Relié, whose fiery personality contrasts Tremblay's gentler wisdom. The team's weakness would be a possible lack of talent—Reçueçn has not yet had the opportunity to develop or train true world-class quality players.

The Reçueçian National Team's mascot is the unicorn; thus another name for the team is "les licornes". The fantastical creature has been a symbol of Reçueçn for almost two millennia and is also the national animal, appearing as the supporters in the national coat of arms.

The team's kit represents the colors of the flag in a quite literal fashion. The jersey was recently redesigned, replacing the first one the Unicorns ever wore, dating back to the 59th Baptism of Fire. Fans who thought the old outfit ugly are excited to see the team play wearing its new uniforms, and feel that they are now represented much more professionally.

Reçueçn has only one stadium in which its national team plays, located in the capital city (also named Reçueçn). Never having been given an official title, the national stadium is usually simply referred to just that: The National Stadium, or in French, the local language, the Stade Nationale. Capacity: 30,000.

Coaching Staff
Jacques Tremblay: Old and wise, Jacques Tremblay is often seen as the father of modern Reçuecian football, known for his eternal ability to innovate and surprise. He had retired, but when asked to coach the national team, did not refuse. He, along with Gerauld Firaut, holds together the national team. Reçuecians tend to forget how ridiculously old he is, and anyway, he's all they've got.

Bonheur Relié: Passionate and motivated, Relié has all the youthful energy you'd hope for in the assistant coach of a side whose manager is pushing three quarters of a century. Sometimes his energy can be a bit much and he's had some friction with the players in the past.

Starters
Gerauld Firaut: The face of Reçuecian football. Mature, talented, humble. Firaut, team captain, provides the leadership on the pitch that les licornes need, and the fact that he's such a nice guy when he's not playing soccer helps cement him as the nation's favored son. As some of his Reçueçn FC have retired or not been called up for this tournament, his exceptional goal-tending skills combined with Tremblay's strategy has preserved the team's defensive nature.

Emanuele Cutrona: Cutrona was in the first batch of call-ups for the National Team after the original Baptism of Fire squad, and he's still one of the youngest on the team. Until Di Martino's call-up, he was the only Italian-speaking player on the team (although others are from Italian-speaking clubs). He's developed a strong friendship with Franky Adams, which often leads to the pair of them getting in trouble.

Paulin Bourguignon: Bourguignon is the kind of defensive player who is always trying to clear the ball with long shots and score goals at corner kicks. Big on counter-attacks, he sometimes outpaces the mid-fielders, usually to his coach's dismay.

Lukas Kayserling: Very tall. Calm and controlled. Sometimes has difficulty communicating as he doesn't speak English or French as well as most of the other team members.

Oliver Spencer: Annother star defensive player from Reçueçn FC, Spencer is often outshone by Firaut, and for a long time Spencer couldn't decide whether the rivalry he thought they had was more important than team spirit or not. By now he has found his groove as part of the all-important back line.

Raoul Lavigne: No relation of the slightly more well-known Hippolyte Lavigne, Raoul is the second sophomore of the team: not one of the original squad but not a brand-new call-up either. He caught the NT's scouts' eyes after helping Bonneville Sportif to a couple good seasons. (He now plays in Baker Park.) Playing outside the nation has given him new things to worry about, namely, if his teammates leave him out of things since he's not a 'local' anymore. He doesn't realize how ridiculous his fears are, but fortunately they push him to prove himself every time he steps onto the field.

Harold Saunders: Saunders is synonymous with an aggressive style of play, especially in the midfield. He seems to always be able to find a way to give the ball to Franky. On and off the field he is emotionally well-balanced, usually rather stoic and unmoved.

Maynard Hebron: The unsung hero of the Assalto Alpino, Hebron is a great proponent of football development across Recuecn, especially on behalf of the smaller amateur teams that have recently joined the FNRF. Hebron often gets lucky with long shots from the edge of the box when the strikers are unable to really get open right in front of goal.

Per Tegeler: Good at receiving the ball from the defense or mid-field, trapping it in general, and taking it into the 18-yard box and shooting. Possible weakness is passing: either he doesn't, or it's long air balls. Per is the big change to the line-up since the world cup—the aging Hippolyte Lavigne was not called up again, and so now Tegeler is starting.

Frank "Franky" Adams: Young, extremely talented, and rather cocky, Franky, who plays for Association Genève in the LNRF, really makes their team. When he has a bad shooting streak, his team has a losing streak, and vice versa, and he knows it. At Association Genève, the team and the fans love him. At the national team, they tolerate him—his rivalries with Reçueçn FC's players cause tension which Coach Tremblay must try to defuse. Tremblay, incidentally, thinks Franky is a bit conceited, although he is still one of the most aware of his talent. Franky is definitely the second most famous player on the team, at least to Reçueians. His role up front helps with that, obviously.

Freeman Lebo: Lebo can score goals, is highly motivated, and persevering. He's comfortable in the striker role. However, he is high-strung and not too difficult to offend, traits which, when combined with his overestimation of his own skill, can make him difficult to get along with. Has lots of potential when a manager can get him to swallow his pride, and Tremblay usually can. Lebo and Franky got off to a rocky start but since then they've really meshed well, and they give each other great service often leading to one of them scoring.

Reserves
Estienne de Chefderue: Both of les licornes' reserve goalies were recently replaced, and de Chefderue got the number one number two spot. Last season at FC Harrim he did well, and he got some practice in the Eagles Cup when Tremblay subbed him into a lot of matches. It remains to be seen how he'll fare in a tournament that means a bit more.

Hagen Groos: A Reçueçn FC representative, yet again: Groos is sweeper for the club, which is supposedly the best in the country. It's probably confusing for him then why the starting sweeper position is handed to the younger Cutrona rather than him.

Jayson Compton: Not a ton to say about Jayson Compton. He's a mysterious fellow and we don't quite know what he's up to ourselves.

Quirino Lucian: Lucian has the look of a rugby player, and he'll take all the intimidation he can get from that: he needs people to know he's not afraid to muscle them down as they approach his goal—because he's not. He'll mess you up.

Barnabus Mercer: Called up for the first time at twenty-seven years old after doing very well in le championnat, some people questioned this decision of Tremblay's. Certainly it was the strongest on paper, so we'll see how it pans out. If you can believe it, Mercer played for a San Lleran club team more than ten world cups ago.

Robert Chéreau: Chéreau's biggest issue is that he tends to drift toward the center when he shouldn't, yet he ironically seems to have a very good idea of space and where to be in it, which is good for a player in his position.

Grégoire Leclair: Leclair almost never plays at the same time as Saunders. Usually, one is subbed for the other depending on whether more defensive or offensive tactics are called for at the moment. Leclair's specialty is going back and clearing the ball in difficult situations. There were thoughts Leclair wouldn't be called up this year, which would've been major news, but I guess he's been doing well enough in Savojarna for Tremblay.

Quentin Gouin: The team's new youngest player, he has breath and speed and agility. The stamina is sometimes lacking.

Marc Schöner: Schöner is the latest call-up, replacing Tegeler on the bench now that Tegeler is starting. He's fresh from winning le championnat with his club (Stomford 1904), so he's got all the energy and drive you could ask for, along with all the pride and self-assuredness.

Ly Nasser: Loves to shoot from far out, and often shoots high. Despite this, he makes up for it with his sheer number of shots. Incredibly aggressive, and loved by Zimmerich fans. Thinks he is one of the best strikers in the world, and he certainly is a good player. Weirdly he gets put on the Reçuecian reserves, you'd expect him to be playing with Lebo and Franky.

Jean-Baptiste Brochard: Immensely fast, especially with the ball, Brochard is weaker in set pieces and organized attacks. His strength is the counter-attack and the breakaway.

Calanico Di Martino: Unfortunately Di Martino's given name doesn't quite just mean 'soccer,' although it is close. His parents must have known there was something special about him. He has a toe that moves with wings.

Reçuecian History and Culture

The nation of Reçueçn was created in the first half of the XIVth century, when Carl Blancpic, Duke of the Duchy of Reçueçn, launched a breakneck military campaign invading and annexing many of his neighbors to the east. Before this time, Reçueçn had been only a city, built on the heights overlooking the junction of the Rhône and Saône rivers. These heights had been settled by Carl Blancpic's distant ancestor, Ifheda Rcuecn, near the end of the IInd century a.d., and had born his name ever since. The area at that time belonged to the Roman Empire, who had established their regional administrative center, Lugdunum, on the other side of the river.

In 197 a.d., a decisive battle was fought near Lugdunum in one of the civil wars for the throne of the empire. The victor, Septimius Severus, razed the city of Lugdunum and destroyed it, stripping from it all imperial privileges in punishment for supporting his rival. This was the end for Lugdunum, but it was the beginning for Reçueçn. Refugees flocked across the river to join the settlement, and the city of Reçueçn grew to become a smallish regional center. Rcuecn's descendants (who changed the spelling to Reçueçn) maintained control over what became the Duchy of Reçueçn for 700 years, until it was inherited by their cousins the Blancpics who reigned for another 300 years.

At the beginning of the XIVth century, power passed into the hands of Carl Blancpic, who was partially insane and a megalomaniac. Thus he declared his duchy to be a kingdom and singled out weak neighbors who he invaded with audacity. Over an incredibly short period of time beginning in the spring of 1337, he had carved out for himself a sizable dominion.

Carl, who styled himself "Carl III of Reçueçn", was violent, unstable, and petty. He was also wildly unpopular with the populations of the various states he had conquered. Although the central power structure helped the economy of the new Kingdom of Reçueçn to some extent, it did not bring with it all the stability that might have been expected. This was mostly due to the decrees of Carl III, who, among other things, began a campaign to persecute and kill all "heretics" within his new realm. Most historians agree that this was in fact a thinly veiled purge of his political rivals. This and other policies he enacted on his whims finally drove the people into open revolt sometime around 1352.

Carl managed to hold on to power for a couple years by hiring mercenaries, but in 1254 lost two key battles and was captured by the rebels. By this time, the rebellion was led by feudal lords throughout the country who had sided with the people against their tyrant king. Carl III was executed, and the kingdom dissolved into a mess of tiny, independent feudal holdings.

No sooner had the various states that had been in the Kingdom of Reçueçn won their independence, than infighting broke out among them. The feudal lords squabbled over power and influence, trying vainly to imitate Carl's meteoric rise to power. This new violence, combined with the economic downturn associated with the rebellion and the breakup of the nation, clearly displayed how poorly things were turning out. More sensible minds came to the decision that the solution was to once more unify Reçueçn.

On November 19, 1356, therefore, The Allied States of Reçueçn came into being. The leaders of all the petty states, duchies, bishoprics, free cities, etc., came together and signed what are known as "The Treaties of the Alliance," a document just powerful enough to classify Reçueçn as a single nation by most people's definition, rather than a group of independent entities. The treaties also established a rough form of democracy, with each state represented (although typically by its aristocracy). Thus Reçueçn lays claim to being one of the oldest democracies in the world.

The treaties defined much of Reçuecian history to come. Provisions were made to establish freedom of religion, in order to avoid another scenario similar to Carl III's persecution of his opponents. The treaties also gave Reçueçn an isolationist bent. The nation had been burned before, and wouldn't soon try to meddle in external affairs, especially when its composite nature made creating a foreign policy so difficult.

Reçueçn, then, has managed to avoid many of the crises of European history. It's darkest moment came when Napoleon invaded, proclaiming himself emperor (although he allowed Reçueçn's government to continue to function under his reign). The allied states have drawn closer together, although cultural differences remain among them; they don't even all speak the same language.

Reçueçian culture has also been shaped by its location, nestled in the center of the Alps. Although rural communities did center around agriculture--especially dairy production--many Reçuecian were forced by the lack of arable land to find other work. This led to a culture of innovation that continues today: Reçueçn is now known for its luxury products and technological exports. This has additionally led to a focus on science and education. The relatively diverse nature of Reçueçn's culture means that some areas are culturally more time-oriented while others are more task-oriented, but this conjunction has led to some unique things, especially in art. Reçueçn, perhaps thanks to its inland, mountainous location, or the fact that it was never a colonial power, has seen little immigration or emigration. Recently, however, the diversity of language spoken in the country has made it attractive to refugees from other areas where those languages are spoken.

TWO FOR TWO
Central Shaneville continued their momentum heading into matchday 2 with a 1-0 over Sannyamathland which sees them extend their lead at the top of the table however this came as a shock to manager Jay Bucks as he said post match "Were still top? get in" he was heard commenting the eccentric manager of Central Shaneville clearly happy.

You could say that a factor to Central Shaneville being top would be the fact that the two top seeds of the group (Drawkland and Trolleborg) slipped over each other only getting a 1-1 draw however anything is possible in football so Central Shaneville still remain in no place to say confidently that there out of the woods yet as Drawkland have a game in hand and as Central Shaneville history will tell you it only takes one bad game for the dream to fall apart.
CENTRAL SHANEVILLE ACHIEVEMENTS:

A Question

Squidroidia 2-0 Omerica
Hideo '63
Kiichi '83

Just what the Squidroidians ordered to start their IAC campaign, Omerica once again faulter with their amateur side. Squidroidia 2, Omerica 0.

Truth be told the Omericans didn't see this game. Nor did they see every other game they were supposed to play. Soft boycotting a tournament and sending in the randos to replace your national team will do that to you. 2 losses from 2 and with Murphtannia and A Flock of Seagulls to come, it could be 4 from 4. Omerica were just biding their time, the amateurs representing their country because there were no other options for teams to send to Havynwilde. Not the worst team possible from the Omerican top flight, nor the 2nd division... The amateurs.

And even then the Squidroidians found it surprising that they only scored 2 goals. Sure they were still goals, Makino Hideo and Ohashi Kiichi scoring those 2 goals (Assisted by Toki and Itō respectively) for Squidroidia to get them their first win back in the tournament where their story really began. They weren't underdogs like last time - They were favorites. It was a surprise that they didn't get 3 past them.

But as the team went back to their hotel, the Omerican soft boycott became clearer. There was some trouble afoot in the south of the small nation, as Malik Loeffler and his Action Congress got provincial control of the south. Riots had broken out in Ravenclyff already, and with Icecliff supporters caught in the crossfire, it became clear that this was the wrong call by the IAC. Omerica was right in leaving their main squad back home.

But the Squidroidians, the Icecliffians, the HUElavians, the Megistians, they all stayed with their first choice squads. Vkyta was the only one besides Omerica to not send their first team, going for their Under 21s instead. Those 2 nations were lucky that their first teams weren't caught in the crossfire. As for everyone else, they were in danger.

As the team arrived back at their Swiss cheese hotel rooms, a question lingered through the players. No, it wasn't why Brooks wasn't starting, that was resolved before the team hit the pitch for their game. It was why they were even here. If Loeffler managed to take control of more of the country, heck if he could rule Havynwilde in the middle of the tournament, would every team participating be at risk to abuse? Was there any enemies to his rule in the teams, especially the host country's, if he got to power? Would any country intervene and try to send their team back home if they were close to getting arrested for not speaking on the same level as a potential Loeffler dictatorship?

It was clear as day to the Squidroidians that they had a sort of double-edged sword. Stay any longer and the risk of harmful government intervention would rise. Lose now to force the team back home, however, and Mito could be sacked by the SFA. The goal for the Inklings? Get as far as possible, possibly to the Quarter-Finals and beyond, without having the team arrested and pulling Squidroidia into the crossfires of war. Harming the Squidroidian population was the last thing the team wanted. They wanted to win with football, not war. But they knew they can't stay forever in such a country like Havynwilde.

Before the news came on and hashed the same things they have been seeing on the papers, 2 squids were having a conversation. Brooks and Colbert.

"What do you think of... All of this?" Henriette said, pointing back to the holes in the wall. They were shining the light of the Sun at any surface they could find, including the skin of the 2 Inklings.

"It's worse than the bunks I have to sleep in at the base," Charlie said back. "Not only does this feel like a military installation... It feels like we're at war."

"Charlie, we might as well be at war again soon. This isn't over, but we have to realize... We have to put winning over the rights of us. We have to win."

Brooks hugged her teammate. Glory over everything was the name of the game from now on.
