The Wild Kards


19 years on from their crowning glory of 3rd place in WBC 31, promptly followed by the outbreak of a civil war that would pull the nation from the public eye, the Wild Kards have finally pulled together enough support and organization to make a return to the international scene.

Note: There are intelligent ponies on this team. If you are interested in finding out more about how they physically play baseball, shoot me a TG or discord DM and I'd be happy to explain. The ground rules for them are as follows: Pegasi aren't allowed to use their wings to fly, be it in the field or on the basepaths. Unicorns can't use their magic while a ball is in flight, either off a bat or after being thrown.

Karditani teams are known to be prone to errors, and as a result pitchers are trained to rely heavily on strikeouts. The squad selected this cycle features probably the cream of the defensive crop that the Karditani Baseball League (KBL) has to offer, but obviously the pitchers won't upend everything they know about how to approach the game because of that. Starters can reach pitch counts of 110-120 regularly but will rarely complete games as they burn through pitches quickly going for those strikeouts. Pitchers are generally capable enough with the bat, and are especially known for driving in runners in scoring position to help their own cause; there's a long-standing tradition of having them hit ahead of catchers, who devote themselves entirely to their defensive and pitcher-supporting responsibilities.

Manager: Gale Wind, 45, #22. The star of the Wild Kard team that made two semifinals in a row, then had her career cut disastrously short by the war breaking out in her age-27 season. She's been called upon to return and try to lead a new generation to glory. A pegasus who was a three-tool stud in her time, possessing blazing speed and a cannon for a wing alongside prodigious pop. When the KBL went to shit and she had to hole up to avoid a collapsing society, she took to perusing the deeper parts of the internet and found an appreciation for the nerdier side of the sport. She'd always been happy to take a walk but seeing the numbers that bore out how important plate discipline really is has had a great effect on her managerial style.
Hitting Coach: Batl Skard, 54, #5. The Wild Kards survived the war much better than the Ironworkers (Karditan's gridiron team) did, meaning there's a lot more talent still alive to return as coaches. Skard was the star for the early Kards and a veteran presence through their glory run, and was a wizard with the bat--having unparalleled vision and discipline at the same time, making him an absurdly difficult out. This obviously plays well in Wind's gameplan--crank that OBP.
Pitching Coach: Manny D'aquisto, 45, #7. Wind's equivalent in the rotation, a young pitcher who was just coming into his own on those elite Kards teams. Born and raised in the strikeout-obsessed culture of that era, he's carried that focus forward when coaching this team.

Lineup: (Batting order, position, name, age, #, bat/throw, info)
1. LF Skyline, 23, #14, S/L; A pegasus with a serious set of wheels. Played through their teens as the typical slap-hitting bunting type, but is getting rigorously coached on how to wait back and draw walks. Has advanced enough in that field to be trusted with the leadoff spot, but still has lots of room to improve.
2. 2B Bryan Brady, 31, #25, R/R; Has comically little power, but elite plate vision and discipline. Just a hair under half his KBL at-bats end up with him on first base.
3. 3B Adam Ezell, 26, #29, R/R; A solid all-round player with great contact, solid power, a sharp eye, and a quick glove. Isn't a slouch on the basepaths, either.
4. RF Artillery "Art" Support, 25, #77, S/R; The squad's Big Bopper. A pegasus who learned the tricks of chucking balls and hitting bombs from Gale Wind herself. Lacks her speed, but makes up for it with a much better sense for fielding catches cleanly.
5. 1B Vera Cruz, 26, #15, R/R; Another all-rounder, Vera has a similar skillset to Ezell with less speed and more pop. And she's a tall drink of water that's a vacuum at first base.
6. CF Asdrúbal Ramírez, 28, #2, L/L; Yet another all-rounder. You can tell there's a pattern to Wind's player selection here: Players with few weaknesses and above average discipline. Ramírez fits that bill perfectly, a steady glove and quick legs to cover center and a propensity for walking. Has enough pop to require pitcher's respect but is far from a dinger demon.
7. C Robert Humphries, 30; #9, R/R; I know what we said in the blurb up top about catchers not hitting, but Humphries has been a generational talent in the KBL by balancing his defensive responsibilities with a quality bat. Serves as the secondary cleanup hitter if everyone in front of him ended up walking; about as much of a homer threat as Ezell.
8. Pitcher
9. SS Tremor, 27, #19, R/R; An earth pony pure defensive specialist chosen because of a relative dearth of shortstop talent in the KBL right now. He's a black hole both on the field and in the lineup.

With DH: Add in Doyle Christain (listed below) in 6th, shift everyone else down one.

Bench:
C Backstop, 24, #86, R/R; Cut from more traditional Karditani catcher cloth, any time that she'd otherwise spend in the batting cages goes to working with the pitching staff to maximize familiarity and coordiation.
1B Braeden Carlisle, 32, #10, L/L; The neu-KBL's premier power threat, he's been snubbed from the starting lineup for his bad OBP track record and age. Still took the invite to play for the team knowing he'd at least be pinch hitting in high-leverage glory-chasing situations.
SS/2B Charles Stubbs, 22, #40, L/R; Something of a diamond in the rough. He's got prodigious power and great speed, but still needs lots of work on his discipline and fielding. Most scouts and coaches have confidence that these aren't insurmountable obstacles but may take a few years--when everything clicks, watch out.
3B/2B Sara Kovačić, 23, #36, R/R; Solid hands, solid glove, and patient: The Formula. Sara looks to be the heir apparent to Brady's second base; not quite as insane an OBP, but with some real pop that could produce unreal OPS numbers if left unchecked.
LF/CF Miguel Robles, 21, #16, L/L; Projected to be Yet Another All-Rounder, but perhaps with a bit more upside. May be able to reach elite power given time.
RF/LF/1B/3B Corner Case, 24, #99, S/R; A unicorn with good power and strong throwing technique but has trouble holding down a consistent starting spot. Makes headway through providing a higher level of offensive play than most utility players.
DH Doyle Christain, 44, #17, S/R; The last of the original Wild Kards still in playing condition. He never ran to begin with, so his legs turning to dust didn't matter. Still a fiend with the stick, pretty much everything you'd want out of a batter. Even if he's been setting error records playing first base for the worst teams in the KBL since we don't use the DH in any capacity.
UTIL Omnipresence, 27, #00, R/R; A unicorn who regularly plays 3+ positions in every game they're in. Rarely makes a notable play but never makes an egregious mistake; competent but forgettable with the bat.

Rotation:
P Pablo Maraville, 29, #32, R/R; Commonly considered the best starter in the KBL at the moment. Packs three different fastballs of slightly different speeds and very different movement, alongside a 12-6 curve and a changeup to maximize speedplay.
P Southhoof, 27, #84, L/L; Gives Maraville a run for his money, and is without a doubt the best pony pitcher. They rely on a cutter for jamming righties and a slider for catching lefties chasing.
P Ramon Villanueva, 25, #57, R/L; One of many flamethrowers the new-look KBL produces. Loves to challenge hitters with high cheese and pulls the string with a knuckle-curve.
P Frankie Sandoval, 23, #47, R/R; The least strikeout-centric of this staff, packing merely a mid-90s fastball and having a sinker in their inventory. Still hardly a "pitch-to-contact" pitcher in the grand scheme of things, but in relation to his peers he might as well be.

Bullpen:
LR Zane Clark, 21, #43, L/L; Predicted to end up in the Kards' rotation at some point, though estimations of whether they're an ace or a third-slot are still fuzzy. Currently throws mid-90s but should make it to the highs in two or three years.
LR Jawbreaker, 28, #55, R/R; A pegasus with a much heavier build than most of her kind. Nothing special in terms of stuff, but is remarkably consistent for very long outings; if a starter gets chased out in the first few innings, she can finish the game with ease.
MR Katarina Giles, 26, #9, R/R; Another flamethrower. Preferred strikeout pitch is a slider. Will often hit for herself, or even be put in to pinch hit then left in to pitch.
MR Rocket, 24, #69, R/R; A unicorn who's yet another flamethrower. Set apart by her extra flames--a fastball that regularly reaches 102 and has spiked as high as 105--but has yet to really develop a second pitch.
MR Gino Lofton, 27, #22, R/L; The resident lefty specialist. Not as flamethrower-y, but still brings a high 90s fastball with a devastating changeup.
SU Henry Valdez, 22, #21, R/R; A hot prospect with an astoundingly solid standard inventory. Fastball that touches 100, changeup, slider. All quality.
CP Dave Saroyan, 28, #3, R/R; The top reliever in the KBL since its return. High-90s heat, a table-dropping splitter, and a changeup that breaks in on righties to induce even more over-swinging.

Home Stadium: Big Island Field, Ponyburgh. A state-of-the-art stadium in the resurgent downtown of the old industrial city, next door to sister stadium Island Junction that hosted the World Bowl final. Seats 60,000 thanks to the financial backing of Big Island Dressing, a condiment corporation founded in Ponyburgh who's primary product line has become the signature sauce of Karditan's southwestern cuisine and become commonplace across the nation.

It’s jubilee classic time!
South Newlandia to participate in 50th World Baseball Classic!

South Newlandia, still a new nation to international sports, is looking to return to the World Baseball Classic. Four years ago, they managed to get into the Round of 16 on their first attempt, and the South Newlandian U22-team, of which you will see a few players in the senior team, finished in 4th in the eleventh International Baseball Slam three years ago. That was followed up with another Round of 16 apperance two years ago in WBC49, and we don’t like to talk about IBS12, the one that had knockout games in South Newlandia. Partly because of Baseball being the one sport where South Newlandia enjoyed international success so far, the sport has been expanded in recent years, with more young people joining Baseball than ever before. The team hopes to repeat the success of reaching the Round of 16, but that will be very hard in a tightly contested WBC with many strong teams, and many teams that once were strong returning.

Complete Roster:

Coaching staff

Manager/Head Coach: Tobias Sansara (35)
He brought the Elephants into the Round of 16 in Drawkland and to the Round of 16 in Newmanistan, and he will try to three-peat this success. He managed to get the government to pay for more staff, and everyone from the coaching staff from WBC48 will be returning.

Hitting coach: Anthony Smith-Miller (35)
ASM is back, and he will assume his old role as the batting coach again. He and Sansara are not only the same age, but they are also good friends, and you can see them working together very well.

Pitching coach: Damian Bolton (39)
Damian Bolton also returns to his old spot, he brought all four of his pitchers along with him as well. Pitching was the big strength that got South Newlandia into the knockouts last time, and it will be crucial again.

Bench Coach: Gabriel Brown (43)
Brown returns to his job as a bench coach to. He isn’t too relevant, honestly, he has gotten used to his role away from the focus.

Bullpen coach: Mohamed Felix (40)
Four years ago, South Newlandia didn’t even have a bullpen, but since WBC49, Felix assists Bolton, being responsible for the relief pitchers. Since that was a crucial weak spot for South Newlandia in pretty much every tournament, his role might become an important one.

1st Base Coach: Jakub Mayo (55)
Mayo will be the oldest coach in this year’s staff, and he will be responsible for the 1st base, specifically trying to teach Adam King some better fielding. We strongly advise against making condiment-based jokes in his presence.

3rd Base Coach: Diego Kirk (44)
Four years ago, Kirk was responsible for both bases, but he can focus on third base now. His job will be taking Ian Pearce under his wing, but he is respected for his baseball experience and valuable for the entire team.

Starting pitchers

(SP1) Jacob Conroy (25, pitches with his right hand)
Conroy is the best pitcher of the South Newlandian team. He is throwing solid fastballs, good curveballs, and can go for a long time, although pitch counts aren’t really something South Newlandian teams bother to do. He is going into his third Classic, and he really wants to win. He hates to intentionally walk, except if he pitches to a bear. He will be pitching against South Covello.

(SP2) Ryan Hunter (23, L)
Hunter is most known for the incident with Midnight, when the bear from Hampton Island charged the mound on Hunter during the group stage of WBC49. Otherwise, he is a really good pitcher, usually relying on fastballs and the occasional change-up, but he does give up a few too many walks. He’s the pitcher against Zwangzug.

(SP3) Blake Robbins (27, R)
Robbins, actually the oldest starter at 27, is also going into Classic number three. He isn’t too notable, also using his fastballs most of the way, but he has a really nasty curveball too. He is typically the worst pitcher on the squad, as opposing batters can usually predict him fairly well. He will be pitching to Maklohi Vai.

(SP4) Larry Cain (26, R)
Larry Cain is going into his second Classic after a fairly bad first one. He is considered a decent player, but he just doesn’t have anything that makes him outstanding compared to the rest of the pitchers. His fastball is also not strong enough to get a lot of outs most of the time. He will be pitching to Pleau.

(SP5) Jay Kramer (21, R)
Jay Kramer was the most surprising young player in the IBS11, allowing the fewest runs per inning and showing that he can compete with the bigger players. WBC49 went well for him, too, but he crashed in IBS12. The youngest starting pitcher may struggle against the more intimidating sides; he still has a lot to learn. He will be pitching to Recuecn.

Relief pitchers

(CL1) Barnaby Butt (24, L)
Butt is also going into his second Classic. He can get some outs, but he isn’t regarded as a top-tier reliever. Honestly, the entire squad doesn’t really feature any top tier relievers. In South Newlandian baseball, the starters usually go six to eight innings, and then the closer comes in.

(CL2) Fabio Paul (28, R)
Fabio Paul is the closer that experts consider to be the best among the three South Newlandia will be using. He’s got a brilliant curveball that you can’t really see coming, but is usually almost done after just two innings, so teams can’t rely on him as much.

(CL3) Marcel Adams (27, R)
Adams might be the least interesting player on the team, average in everything he does. Don’t expect great things for him, but he rarely collapses either. He is most commonly brought in for the almost decided games.

(SR) Herbert Hoosier (20, S)
The only switch pitcher and the only all player on his first Classic will be Hoosier. He is usually coming in similar to a closer of a pitcher collapses.

(MR) Dennis Miles (27, R)
South Newlandia rarely use their Middle and Long Reliever. but Miles would come in for about 2 or 3 innings, while Miller could be there if things go very wrong.

(LR) Jack Miller (30, R)
Jack Miller was one of the starting pitchers for WBC48, but he has since lost that spot. He will be there if things go horribly wrong, and he can assist the team with general advice.

Starters, in batting order

(RF) Fabio Ventura (26, bats with his left hand)
Fabio Ventura was the most important fielder in the squad for WBC48 and 49. He scored tons of runs, but as almost all South Newlandian players, he is a contact hitter. He will be the first one to bat in every game again, and being left handed has helped him, too. He is also decent at catching and throwing balls, if he needs to.

(SS) David Drum (22, R)
David Drum was only a substitute in the 48th WBC, scoring four runs including a home run in a few games, but he was able to prove himself in the IBS11, scoring the most runs of the team, including quite a few home runs. Since then, he’s been a starter. He is playing very well in synergy with Igor White, getting a ball in between them is a difficult task.

(1B) Adam King (24, R)
Adam King was at the IB11S too, at one point scoring 11 runs over six games, and he was a starter for the team during WBC48 and 49 was well. He may well be the biggest home run threat on the team. He could still improve his fielding, but he has time do that.

(CF) Shawn Zimmerman (20, S)
Zimmerman was also among the surprisingly strong players in the IBS. After a rocky start, he improved fast, and managed to clinch the starting role in the WBC at only 18 years old, maybe because Jake Davidson decided against playing again. He is a very solid contact hitter, as most of the other guys are.

(C) Gregor Garner (26, L)
Gregor Garner is returning after being on the WBC48 and WBC49squad as well. He did well there, commiting relatively few errors, but he is most likely on his last classic. He brings basically no hitting power to the table either.

(2B) Igor White (28, R)
Igor White is returning as well, as he was playing in the WBC48 and WBC49 squad too. He is a solid contact hitter, and he is combining well with David Drum. A knee injury gave him trouble before the tournament, but he seems to be fine now.

(LF) Daryl Dunlop (24, R)
Daryl Dunlop wasn’t part of the squad for WBC48, but he pushed George Webber out after a strong performance in the IBS. Similar to Zimmerman, he improved along the way, and he might be an important talent for upcoming classics as well.

(3B) Ian Pearce (25, R)
Ian Pearce is also returning from the squad of the 48th WBC. He is a decent fielder, but a terrible hitter. He might end up being one of the weaker players for South Newlandia.

(DH) Mike Larsen (21, S)
In the first attempt, South Newlandia played without a designated hitter, but since the team in the IBS and the SNBL use them, Mike Larsen, who played DH in the IBS, will do that for the senior team as well. South Newlandian batters in general are often contact hitters, with home runs being rarer at about one for five-seven runs.

Stadiums


Because of the format, all home games will be at the same stadium.

Elephant Stadium (15000)
The biggest South Newlandian baseball stadium is located in the relative South of the capital city Elephant Valley. The stadium was upgraded after the 48th WBC, and is now able to host 15000 people. All fifteen home games of WBC48 were played here, and the unranked South Newlandia won twelve of them, including all of the first ten home games. The upgraded stadium also featured one match series in the IBS11 and the WBC49, and knockout games in IBS12, including a semi-final. Domestically, this is the home of the Elephant Valley Homers.

Banija split 2 & 2 series with Ranoria as the Golden Edition of the World Baseball Classic is set to begin

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The World Baseball Classic. The sport's greatest tournament. And we are in the golden edition- the 50th edition of this long-running tournament. It is quite a tournament. Many old nations are back, and everybody's excited for what promises to be one of the most hotly contested Classics of modern times. Ousman Kakay, Banija's manager, is quietly bullish on his team's chances. He spoke to reporters before the start of their 2 & 2 series with Ranoria. "Well, I think this is as talented of a squad as we've had in my time here. We've established a long record of consistency in this tournament, making the quarterfinals of the last four World Baseball Classics. As a team ranked in the top 5, our goal, even in this vastly expanded tournament, has to be to reach our fifth consecutive Quarterfinal. This tournament will be a mentally tough one for sure."

With the release of the team's pitching schedule, there are several notes to make. One, of course, is who is getting extra starts. If everybody got an equal number of starts, each starter would have six starts in the group stages. But of course, that's not how Ousman Kakay works. He wants his team to win- and that means he's going to be moving around pitching matchups, moving pitchers up and down the rotation. No single opponent will face the same pitcher six times. There's a logic to that, as well. If they say a lineup does much better against a pitcher the third time through the order, what about the 15th time in the same tournament? It's a good way to keep your opponents on their toes.

Duta Condé, the team's designated ace, and Ensa Suso, the team's #3 starter, will both have 7 starts. Suntukung Kandeh and Ramata Kabba, the two southpaws in this pitching rotation, will both have six starts. And the newest member of this rotation, 21 year old Faraba Conateh, will only have four starts. Banija's pitching coach, Juma Nyo, spoke on this as well. "Baseball's a game of strategy, and a game of numbers." He said. "As coaches, we're supposed to try and put our players in the best position to succeed. This rotation strategy ensures that our best pitchers get to face our best opponents." And that is true. Only the top 3 starters in the rotation will face Pot 2 side and former WBC champion, Super Llamaland. Suso will have two outings against them, Kandeh will have one, while Duta Condé will have three.

In preparation for this all-important golden edition of the WBCs, the national team ensured that they would be prepared. A 2&2 with Ranoria would do the trick. In game 1 of this series, in Ranoria, we had put Duta Condé on the mound. And he was dealing. His arm was ready, he looked as if he was in midseason form. Six innings, allowing only one baserunner on 65 pitches. Ousman Kakay told reporters that if it was a group stage, he surely would have had a longer leash on the starter, but the fact that it was a preseason game meant that his starters had pitch count limits.

The game was a pitcher's duel, with Tommy Verona going pitch for pitch with Banija's ace. A two run homer in the fifth, however, by Third Baseman Jung Jassey was the difference. The second game in Ranoria was another back and forth battle between the Krauts and Banija. Another strong pitcher's duel, as Suntukung Kandeh kept his opponent off-balance. The Banijan bullpen had a chance to end this game as well. However, Ranoria's players would come up big in the clutch. Bottom of the 9th, 3-2 lead for Banija. Brand new closer Sama Kinte on the mound. A Leonardo Harrison single to lead off the inning. Kinte responded fairly well, striking out the next two batters. But then came up the 15 year old, Jesse Griffith. The youngster hadn't yet gotten a hit in the entire series- but that was about to change.

Kinte hung a breaking ball, and Griffith got all of it. He hit it over the wall in left center field, and boom. That was the game. Positive reception in Ranorian media, of course. Ousman Kakay hates bullpen struggles, which has long been Banija's achilles heel. With a new closer, of course pressure is rising. Back in Banija, both teams won a game by the exact score of 7-4. While in Ranoria, it was the pitchers who dominated, in Banija, it was the hitters who had the upper hand. Faraba Conateh started Game 3, while Ramata Kabba threw Game 4.

The Classic itself is upcoming. We can take a lot from this series. Not much to learn- but here's to hoping this series allows Banija to get off to a fast start here at WBC 50, so we can quickly solidify our spots as the betting favorites to win these group and make the knockout stages with ease. Ensa Suso, of course, is the only starter who did not pitch in this series. Why? Everything's a mind game with Ousman Kakay- he told us that he didnt' want Super Llamaland to have any recent film on Suso before their game on Matchday 3, although we can imagine that Kakay is being fairly extra, considering the two teams had a Round of 16 playoff series against each other just in the last Classic.

And who is ready for the festivities of opening day! Istria has announced a street party for the event, with food trucks and dancers and throwing a general party that marks the beginning of the World Baseball Classic. Hopefully, this team will open up well so we can have something to celebrate. As always, go Banija!

The Baseball Federation of Liventia announces the following 25-man roster for the 50th World Baseball Classic following the disappointment of missing the playoffs at the 49th World Baseball Classic.

This was the third year of the new seasonal and playoff structure for the two conferences of the Liventian Baseball Championship, the National and Challenger Baseball Leagues. There are 12 teams in each conference, with two divisions of six in the NBL and three divisions of four in the CBL. In the Challenger League the three division winners and next five best teams make the postseason, while in the National League the top two teams from each division plus the next four qualify. Each team plays 144 regular-season games, with the bottom team in each conference being relegated to Division Two.

Division Two remains the Wild West, with the standard of play so low that multiple qualifying hitters maintained a batting average over .500 over 164 games. This year, the Cittin Bashers (144–20) and Weston East Misfits (132–32) won promotion back to the top flights, with the Misfits winning the championship series 4–3. In the LBC, the Lox Land Talons (49–95) suffered relegation from the CBL, while the Schimpol Redbirds (47–97) were the NBL's relegated team by virtue of having the a losing head-to-head against Dover Outer North. The Redbirds became the first former LBC champions to suffer relegation, coming just two years after their title-winning season.

The Olympton Rapiers won their second LBC title in their fourth Grand Finals appearance, beating the Talbott South Hilltops 5–2 in the series. For the second successive season, two different batters hit over 50 home runs. Tyler Breen also become the third pitcher in league history to win 20 games in a season.

Baseball Liventia applies the following selection rules to all its WBC teams: no foreign-based players will be selected; no player playing in Division Two will be selected due to the lower standard of baseball; and no position player aged 33 or above will be selected. There is no age limit for pitchers.

It is hard to believe that the World Baseball Classic is already going into its 50th edition and what an event it promises to be with a record-breaking 78 participants. After their Round of 16 exit against Nova Anglicana in WBC 49, Tikariot is back in an attempt to take it one step further, but looking at their group it will be a tall order to advance to the knock-out stages.

They have the current number one in the world, and at the same time also hosts of this year's WBC, Cassadaigua as well as the winners of the IBS XII in South Newlandia and Tikariot, Daskel, who will also be a formidable opponent. Rounding off the group is 63rd ranked Osciaru and the two unranked teams of Carung and Thea Liters, all three of which are pretty much blank pages in Tikariot's baseball history book.

Coach Graham McCrory's roster is basically unchanged compared to the last edition, with only infield reserve player Faitalia Letutusa a new face, so instead of experimenting, the coach is banking on continuity and a team that knows each other inside and out. However there are rumours about this potentially being the last major tournament for number one pitcher De'Andre Stevens, who has been plagued with injuries throughout the year and could see this as his last hoorah.

The match schedule seems to be in Tikariot's favour, as the first three games will see the Owls face off against Daskel, Oscioru and Thea Liters, which gives some light optimism for a potential two out of three record, even though the first two will be on the road. We reached out to McCrory for a brief statement and he did take this literal.

It is exciting to be back in the big leagues and it could be a blessing in disguise to have been drawn into a group with Cassadaigua as it puts us into the role of David, which had suited us extremely well during the IBS XI and also up to a point in last year's WBC. Overall I see Daskel as our main competition for the second spot, but however things will go, the qualification for the knockout stages is our declared goal. - Franco Salvaggione


Experts see the fact that the team has almost completely stayed together as an advantage for the Owls as there is no danger of disjointedness and in a way see the national team almost as an additional club team, spending a lot of time with each other, both on and off the pitch.

The Tikariot Sports Gazette will cover every game of the WBC 50 and hopefully we will be able to report good news in our next edition.

Ever since the national team won the World Baseball Classic, it has been downhill from there. The state of the Ethanian national team has got so dismal that for the first time since the start of the nation's time in the tournament, Ethane is now ranked outside the top ten in the World Baseball Classic rankings. Lockie, while he brought good fortune to begin with, had lost his magic spark in the team, so one of the more left-field options has been brought in to try to change the culture in the club. Graham Steadhall leads one of the local-run baseball clubs in Ethane and is well-known for being a tough manager, which is what is seen to be needed for the national team. He won't be their friend; he'll probably be their enemy, but he views it that when that is the case he is doing his job right. It's hoped he can instill a sense of discipline into the side.

The McTidley arena is the baseball arena recently commissioned after the IBS X by the government, as they felt even though not many baseball games take place in Ethane, that we ought to have a baseball arena in Ethane for those times when we would be playing home matches. The McTidley arena is named after the teacher who tried to set up a baseball league in the humorous reality tv show, ''But it's Baseball'', which ran from 2003-2005, and attracted an average of 3 million viewers an episode in its first 2 series. This stadium has recently been expanded with the increasing popularity of baseball in Ethane, and now can hold around 20,000 spectators and is currently operated by the EBA (Ethane Baseball Association).

Reçueçn is not a nation known for playing baseball. However, the Ministry of Sport decided that the Golden edition of the WBC would be a great opportunity to use as a bit of cultural outreach and made an effort to find Reçuecian expatriots and dual citizens living in countries that were known for their baseball prowess. A team was quickly thrown together consisting entirely of university students attending school abroad (and many of whom have also lived abroad for much of their lives). All of these students play baseball at school, whether on their school's team or just on the side. A coach was found who lived in Reçueçn (a friend of one of the Ministry bureaucrats who remembered seeing him try to teach some kids how to play baseball at a neighborhood party one time) and the team was sent off to Cassadaigua.

After the second Revolution, Sicoutimont transformed into a totalitarian state based on new leader Alphonse Pomeroy’s ideology of ‘National Durability’, which built off of Dialikovite economic thought as well as his own ideas regarding environmentalism. Ostensibly, Sicoutimont is an eco-communist state. In reality, the nation is rapidly becoming tied to a cult of personality surrounding Pomeroy, who is referred to as the ”Chef supreme,” or Supreme Leader. Sicoutian society is dominated by the governing party (the Sicoutian Patriotic Workers’ Front, or simply the Workers’ Front), the military (Sicoutian People’s Army is the standing military, the Garde Vert-Rouge des Traveilleurs (Red-Green Workers’ Guards) are the national militia) and ideology (Pomeroy’s book On the Idea of National Durability is required study in schools). Sicoutimont has preferred to remain isolationist, not seeking to antagonize foreign nations. Remembering the great success its baseball teams had in the past, however, many in Sicoutimont feel that baseball is the perfect way to reconnect with the outside world, and build new relationships and maintain old ones.

Manager: Pierre Simon (GVRT)

Simon is the manager of GVRT, the team of the military reserves based in the city of Val-Maurice. It isn’t too difficult for GVRT to put together a quality roster - they are heavily supported by the government, and have first choice over many of the best young players in the country due to the fact that military service is mandatory. However, the club had experienced a bit of a title drought before Simon took over. He turned around the culture, however, and has led GVRT to 3 of the last 4 LBS championships. A typical Sicoutian manager, he is less statistics-focused and more traditional in his ways. As a military man himself, Simon is a bit of a drill sergeant at times. However, he is a very smart baseball man, and always has something up his sleeve during games.

Julien Prevost is a legendary figure at Epeistes, while Patrick Lopes has been credited with the development of many of the country’s great pitchers. Alfonso Soriano is the only name involved with the team that might be familiar to foreign fans - a member of Sicoutimont’s runner-up World Baseball Classic 26 team. Rene Bonneaux and Stephane Bouquet are both experienced coaches who are trusted by Simon for the tournament.

A strong roster of hitters, made up of some of the top players in the LBS. Michel Leon has a legitimate claim to being the best player in the post-Revolution era of Sicoutian baseball, the holder of various LBS records and a 3-time champion with GVRT. He was also the home run king of the LBS last season. Quentin Delmas is another big power hitter, who finished second in the home run standings in the LBS last season to secure his spot on this team. Players like Patrick Robinet, Tim Farnell and Daniel Herrington will also bring important value to this team. The best defensive player in the lineup is Robinet, a very quick shortstop. Rudy Plessis will be the designated hitter if necessary on the road, he’s a big man capable of sending bombs into the stands.

Back in the day, Sicoutimont was best-known for its excellent bullpen. Sicoutimont’s contingent of pitchers for WBC 50 is a strong one, however, the starters are aging - many selected it seems based on the reputation they have earned across their careers. Nicolas Martin is the ace, while Eric Labat is very capable of leading the team if needed. There could be issues at the end of the rotation, with a 35 and 36 year old - how will they find it as this tournament extends towards 30 games in the group stage? That’s where the relievers will come in handy, and while it’s perhaps not as stacked as that famous WBC 26 core, this is a good bunch. Victor Feron has won multiple Prix Claude-Perrault awards as the top closer in the nation, while Thierry Roussel and Reynaldo de la Cruz are also well-regarded in their positions.

An interesting collection of players here on the bench. There are several key veterans who will add some depth and experience to the team, including Jean-Christophe Adam. Although he’s 36 now, and retiring soon, he is a true legend of Sicoutian baseball. Gary Katchmar is the only switch hitter on this team, something that could make him a valuable piece in some games further into this tournament. Then, there are some of the younger faces. Laurent Pascal is one of the hottest younger names in Sicoutian baseball at the moment, while Marco Medrano and Michel Guegan have also turned heads with their performances in the LBS right now.

One of the many casualties of the great changes in the country over the years, the famous violet et bleu uniforms are out. The Sicoutian home jersey will be all red, with writing in green ‘Sicoutimont’. The away jersey will be all white, white the red writing ‘Sicoutimont.’ The home jerseys will also feature red caps/helmets with a green fleur-de-lis symbol. The away jerseys will feature white caps/helmets with a red star containing a fleur-de-lis, this logo is also the symbol of the Garde Vert-Rouge des Travailleurs.

Home Stadium

The Sicoutimont baseball team will play its games at the Parc Alphonse-Pomeroy, in St-Simeon, Sicoutimont. The park seats 100,000 fans, and was just recently completed as a national stadium for both sporting events, cultural events and public speeches. The surface is natural grass, and it is an open-air stadium.

Important: Notes for RPing against Sicoutimont

  • Sicoutimont is currently a totalitarian one-party state under the leadership of Chairman/Supreme Leader Alphonse Pomeroy and his Sicoutian Patriotic Workers’ Front
  • As a result, visiting fans will not be allowed to enter Sicoutimont. At the same time, however, Sicoutian fans will not be allowed to travel to away games.
  • When in Sicoutimont, visiting players and staff will be under the watchful eye of government-appointed minders. They will not be allowed to leave their hotels alone under any circumstances, however, can request to be taken to see some of the important tourist sites in St-Simeon.
  • There are various important rules to note. The Sicoutian government is genuinely happy to welcome foreign players to the country, and the opportunity to re-enter foreign competition. However, they expect respect to be shown at all times. Foreign visitors should assume they are being watched at all times, and that their hotel rooms are bugged. In general, the Sicoutians will be looking to avoid creating any international incidents. However, openly disrespecting the nation of Sicoutimont or Alphonse Pomeroy himself would not be wise, and might earn you an extra trip to the local police headquarters.
  • Automobiles are extremely rare in Sicoutimont, due to restrictions imposed on their sale. For the tournament, however, buses will be available to bring visiting teams from the airport to their hotel and the ballpark.
  • While opportunities to interact with locals would be rare, if they do happen, it would be wise to avoid discussing politics. The older and middle-aged generations, who still have memory of the good days of the old Sicoutimont, are generally quietly opposed to the regime. The younger generations, meanwhile, led the Revolution and have been taught about the supposed glories of the new Sicoutimont. Each member of the national baseball team and staff have been vetted for political loyalty.
  • Games at the Parc Alphonse-Pomeroy will mostly see fans coming from the soldiers of the Sicoutian People’s Army or high-ranking members of the Workers’ Front of Sicoutimont. Tickets will be available to the average citizen, however, and thus a great atmosphere should be expected. The home opener will be a very politicized affair, with a pre-game parade from the SPA at the stadium. It is also expected Chairman Pomeroy himself will make a speech.
  • When on the road, the Sicoutian players and staff will have as much freedom as your nation’s laws grant them. However, when they go out on their own, they will also be followed by minders.

Group and Schedule

Sicoutimont have been drawn into group 3 for the World Baseball Classic. The Harfangs were placed in a pot alongside other returning teams with some prior success in the tournament, including one-time rivals Maklohi Vai. Many in Sicoutimont were also hoping for a draw against their eastern neighbours, Cassadaigua. Instead, however, Sicoutimont will face some of the new powers of the tournament - including group top seed Hapilopper. It will surely be a difficult group for the Sicoutians, but the entire nation will be hoping they can pull off something special - something to remind us of the good old days once again.

Sicoutimont’s long-anticipated return to international baseball will see them get an immediate reckoning with the modern game, as they will take on Hapilopper on the road. The Sicoutians will make their home debut at the Parc Alphonse-Pomeroy on matchday two against HUElavia. Sicoutimont host Hapilopper for the first time on matchday 6, which will be one of the biggest games of the tournament for the team. Other key dates include the final stretch of games, with the Sicoutians’ final three games of the group stage coming against Bardney (H), The Fortem (H) and West Phoenicia (A).

Full coverage of Sicoutimont’s World Baseball Classic 50 campaign will fall to the Sicoutian National News Agency. All games will be aired on the state television channel SCTV, as well as the state radio stations Lac-Drouin FM, Voice of Sicoutimont and Radio St-Simeon, all of which are government-operated. Voice of Sicoutimont is the main international broadcaster from the country. Let’s go Sicoutimont!

Now I'm here in this strange country where half the food is made of goat and facing a team that's simultaneously ranked top 5 in like eight sports."

"You best not be sayin' that shit 'round me," Doyle chuckled from behind her. "You're only a year past me, and I'm still goin' out there an' gettin' it done."

"Uh-huh. Speaking of, Banija uses the DH. Shouldn't you be out there taking some swings?"

"I was jus' grabbin' a drink, i'ain't nothin' ta worry 'bout. Y'know, things ain't so bad for old players comin' back--Mørátüabáterían's got to the playoffs that one IAC we did, Skies just went nine-one with the 'workers in the Bowl. Can't be countin' yerself out so early."

"I'm not counting myself out! Or the team. We've got quality players here... at least, quality by the standards of a rebuilding league. It's just a weird change of pace."

Ignace Tremaux rose early in his apartment in the city of Lac-Drouin, Sicoutimont. He got out of his bed, walked to the kitchen and prepared himself a quick bowl of cereal. What time was it exactly? He looked up at the clock, which was right between the only two pieces of decoration the government-provided apartment had come with - a framed portrait of Sicoutian leader Alphonse Pomeroy, and a framed flag of the country. 6:59AM. Perfect timing, he thought, to turn on the news.

He turned the television on, which showed a simple test card - a fleur-de-lis on the screen, with a clock right below. Ten seconds… and it hit 7:00. The test card was replaced now by scenes of the country - the Lac-Drouin itself, the cities like St-Simeon and Beaudette, forests, mountains, rivers. Finally, we see the famous footage of the end of the Second Revolution - of Alphonse Pomeroy raising the red-white-green banner of his Sicoutian Patriotic Workers’ Front in the Place St-Pierre - now, of course, renamed Place Alphonse-Pomeroy. The scene was underscored by a rousing instrumental rendition of the Sicoutian national anthem.

It could’ve been beautiful, if it wasn’t so… propagandized. It seemed almost normal, however, compared to what came next. An instrumental rendition of the ‘Chanson d’Alphonse Pomeroy,’ done by a big military band, while images of the Chairman, Supreme Leader, whichever of his 55 official titles he felt like using on a daily basis, flashed across the screen. By the time the actual news started, it was already 7:07AM.

Good morning, Sicoutians and thank you for joining us at Sicoutian Central Television today. Today is the 17th of February, in the 18th year of the Sicoutian calendar. Great Leader Alphonse Pomeroy spoke to the National Assembly yesterday, sharing his great vision for the future of our glorious nation. We will bring you his speech in full later today. A programming schedule will follow.

With that, Ignace flipped the television off. He was reminded of the old joke - the average Sicoutian turns the TV on at 7:07, and turns it right back off at 7:08. That was one of the things with having only one TV channel in the entire country - there were no other options. The programming, too, was always the same - music through the early morning, as well as “informational” programming on national history, or sometimes if you were lucky, reports of sites of natural beauty. In the afternoon, there was a news program which repeated throughout the dinner hour as workers returned to their home. Sports would follow, with a regular schedule - football on the weekends (and always Lac-Drouin St-Pierre, one of few clubs retaining their history from the old times), baseball on weeknights in the summer and hockey on weeknights in the winter. Then, to round off the day, a movie (always something to do with the revolution or war) and a nightly recap of the day’s news. If any television ratings numbers were available, however, surely the baseball games would be the most popular.

The link of baseball to past national glories made it a favourite of the regime. The classic 17-inning thriller Game 6 of the World Baseball Classic 26 Finals was replayed at least twice a year, and Game 3 of the Copa Rushmori de Beisbol Final - where Sicoutimont won its only ever sporting title thanks to a 5-0 win over Karditan - was something brought out on important national holidays. It was always interesting to see how the games were edited - the original commentary was kept, but references to the imperial family or anything about the politics of the old nation were edited out. Emperor Jean III’s congratulations on-field to the team after the CRdB final had even been edited, making it look like pitcher Yves Canton was shaking hands with thin air. The Ligue de Base-ball Sicoutien had once been amongst the world’s finest - the Ile-Perrot Epee three-time world champions, and famous amongst the baseball world. Sometimes, some of their games from the past were seen as well. There was a certain romance to that time, Ignace thought. Back then, the national team was made up of players who came from different clubs and came together to try and make history. Nowadays, the best players were all drafted into the military and sent to play for GVRT, the military team which was now the country’s best.

Ignace finished breakfast, put on his outfit for the day - a white dress shirt, black pants and boots, and a little pin with the Sicoutian Patriotic Workers’ Front logo on it to go on his shirt. The pin, which was given to everyone who worked for the Party in some capacity, signalled importance. Ignace didn’t feel too important, however, as he walked down the dark hallway of his apartment and took the stairs to the bottom - the elevator, of course, had been broken for a few weeks now, but the ‘necessary paperwork’ was still making its way through the bureaucracy. He stepped outside into a cold, snowy day, with gray skies above. He passed the bike racks out front - but taking a bike today would be quite a questionable decision. This part of town was once home to some of Lac-Drouin’s elites. After the revolution, however, the old houses had been torn away and replaced by dozens of identical apartment buildings.

Instead of taking a bike, he walked to the corner of the street to wait at the bus stop. There were at least 15 people gathered there, but none said a word - someone, of course, could be listening to every word at any time. The bus arrived at the exact time it was scheduled - one of the benefits of the national law banning cars on inner city roads. The government heavily subsidized public transport, and passed legislation so that only the elites could even think about owning a car - which was only really good for getting you from a city to a city.

All of these laws, and countless more, were part of the grand ideology of Chairman Pomeroy, named durabilite de la nation. Sicoutimont had been unsustainable in the past, you see - overpopulation, over-industrialization and other things meant the country was heading towards a cliff. And Chairman Pomeroy had saved them, had pulled the country back, all through his own wisdom. That was, of course, the official line. What was supposed to be an environmentally friendly worker’s paradise had become, in the eyes of foreign observers at least, just another tinpot dictatorship.

At each stop along the way, Ignace kept his eyes firmly focused on the city brushing past him. Some parts of Lac-Drouin retained their old charm - had remained untouched by the revolution itself, and the aftermath. Old landmarks like the monument to the first Civil War remained. There was also the Stade St-Pierre, home of Lac-Drouin St-Pierre, and the Arene Lac-Drouin, which once played host to a World Cup of Hockey final. And then, the new - the Monument to the Founding of the Party, the Revolutionary Heroes’ Monument and Cemetery, and, at the exact centre-point of the city, the Tower of the Eternal Flame, which had been built and lit on the fifth anniversary of the new regime. The tower was also the centrepiece of the Place Alphonse-Pomeroy, which had government buildings surrounding it, including the National Assembly.

Then, of course, there were the propaganda posters - one at seemingly every possible spot on the road. They showed men and women working, a sun shining down on the country, and soldiers looking quite intimidating. They had slogans on them calling the people to action/loyalty, depending on the setting. The largest one in the city was a mural on the side of the headquarters of the Garde Rouge-Vert des Travailleurs (GVRT, Worker’s Red-Green Guards), the militia force of the country. It showed various soldiers marching forwards underneath three flags - one all red, one the national flag, and one the green-red banner of the GVRT, with the slogan ”Complétez la Révolution en Sicoutimont!” - complete the revolution in Sicoutimont.

Finally, the bus reached its terminus at the Place Alphonse-Pomeroy, and one by one, the riders stood up, bowed to the picture of Pomeroy at the front of the bus, and disembarked into the square. These were the people who made the country work - working for the Party in its various departments. Ignace felt the cold wind on his face as he walked into the East Building, and headed up to his office at the Party Department of Sport and Recreation.

The workers entered the building and sat down. Promptly, the political commissar attached to the Department stood up to speak.

“Good morning, everyone. Today is the 3rd Friday of the month, meaning today is Political Day. Today, we will be analyzing Chairman Alphonse Pomeroy’s seminal work, On the idea of National Durability.

Ignace smiled through gritted teeth - everyone hated Political Day. Every workplace in the country had one day per month set aside to ‘study our national heritage, national politics, and uplift the spirit of the nation within the workers.’ Oh well, he thought. Just another day in paradise.

Notes on our Grim Reapers

Traditionally, the Grim Reapers have taken the pitcher use with great dose of liberalism. Assuming the pitcher has a solid game, the pitching count is loosely observed, and it's absolutely in sight for the starter to go well into seventh or even eighth inning. That said, it is just as likely for the starting pitcher to get yanked within first three innings if one allows too many runs early into the game, which of course have happened before. In those cases, expect at three to five pitchers to be used for remainder of the game.

The Grim Reapers, as with their equivalents in other sports, are very aggressive- it's in their playing colours and will stay like that forever. While they do lack fast players, most of the outfielders and some infielders do have very good sense in stealing bases or making right decisions when taking risks, so while an occasional whoopsie-daisie with early outs do happen, it's not be all end all. Of course, we also have to remember that this is counted into the selection criteria, which means that both the infielders and outfielders are expected to be proficient in defence and even prepare for multiple positions. This is more the case with infielders than outfielders, but both have seen flexible use of such players before anyway.

Of course, there is a bit of complicated situation with the Quebecois history and geographic realities. Traditionally, baseball has been a fairly racially and regionally ubiquitous sport in Quebec, though there are strong regional and ethnic elements that are noticeable to it. Traditionally, there is strong sense of regional pride that derives from many of the iconic QBO franchises that have defined its history, as six regions traditionally dominate in both high school and pro baseball output, which reflects well into the first round of QBO Drafts. There is somewhat divide between those of Central Quebec (Montreal Twins vs. Quebec Bears), Southwest (Kingston Tigers vs. Kingston Blue Jays), Manitoba (California City Dodgers), Southeast (Halifax Giants), Northwest (Attawapiskat Wiz) and Northeast (Ottawa Eagles). There are minor stylistic differences between the regions and how their players' play, but those don't factor as much as how they used to be. Ethnically, the sport does have more Korean-Quebecois players in general rule of thumb, though that means little in this day and age where most Quebecois, whether Indigenous, Caucasian, Korean or of other Commonwealth origins, are fairly mixed-raced. Still, Korean is the lingua franca of the baseball diamond and that continues to be a defining feature of the Quebecois baseball scene as whole.

We did it! Hicaña beats Drawkland 3-2 and enters first place in the group.

First game ended in a win over Squidroidia! Jason 'Magic Man' Costa pitched a great game and Juan José Calderon hit two homeruns!

Second game ended in a loss but a very close loss to Quebec. We got some home runs but Quebec had more.

Third game was against Drawkland, where 'Super' Neil Perez hit a home run and Nico Zambrano pitched very well! Drawkland hit a home run early, but after Neil tied it, doubles from Alfonso Valenzuela and Silvio Soriano gave us the lead! A great game from both sides.

Shortstop has always been a loaded position for the Tigers, who have trotted out an unending stream of well-rounded, dynamic infielders perfectly suited to the position. As a result, this was also one of the toughest choices for us to make. Darren Bradley was the OG, a slick fielder who consistently hit for average and stole bases like the best of them. Aaron Baxter had the most pop in his bat of any Tigers shortstop, as he showed time and time again in key moments. At his peak, nobody was a better hitter at the position than Alex Kirk, who backed up a .400 average in the domestic league with a scintillating WBC31 the likes of which we may never see again. Xander Fiers was an all-around talent who was unlucky to spend most of his years with non-contenders.

But this is about national team performance first and foremost. And while Fiers may have done more in the LBL, Baxter might have been more clutch overall, Kirk might’ve been the GOAT if not for the WBC32 calamity, and Bradley was the most archetypal shortstop of them all, if we only consider the WBC, it’s hard to pick anyone other than Markus Wright. Of course, after Wright’s first two Classics, where the Tigers crashed out in the quarterfinals both times, the consistent-but-unassuming shortstop may not have been the lock for this position he is today. But WBC40 solidified his status as a clutch performer, as after a .300 average in the group stage (and a twelve-game hitting streak) helped his team to the two-seed, a dizzying array of clutch plays in the playoffs - culminating in a go-ahead double in the clinching game of the WBC finals - cemented his status as a star.

WBC41 should’ve been another chance for Wright to state his case for “best shortstop in the WBC” in front of the Kayla Careys, Mark Dalys, and Alyssa Harringtons of the world. But Wright, plagued by injuries, was never able to recover his WBC41 magic in the group stage before missing out on the last three rounds of the playoffs altogether. Tigers fans will always contend that the WBC41 team - moreso than 40 or 42 - was the most talented team since WBC31, and would’ve beaten Newmanistan at full strength (i.e. with Maddie Wagner and Wright back, and Lucien Russo at 100%). But without Wright, the team lost to an incredible Courtney Duvall performance in Game 7.

WBC42 marked the peak of Wright’s career for both club and country. On the club front, the New Llama Cyclones’ signing of Schitlz center-fielder Ducky Fitzhugh solidified a core of Fitzhugh, Rory Quinlan of Tenburg, and national teamers Wright, Hector Rinaldi, Natalie Wu, and Carsten Riviera that would win three titles over the next four years. Meanwhile, while the WBC40 win was headlined by Sofia Rasmussen and Justin Zheng despite Wright’s timely hitting, WBC42 saw Wright become the best hitter on the team, with key hits to take the team past West Phoenicia and Cassadaigua, as well as a dominant final series against Darmen, marking his place atop the Tigers pantheon.

Squidroidia are atrocious.

Look at Matchday 3. We're last in Group 5. And we haven't faced Drawkland or Quebec yet. We succeeded a great Inkhallan program that could get into the Classic and start making serious, unbridled noise against big teams. Now look.

1 run.

It took us 21 innings to even get a run, to even lead a game, against the Pripet Sodalist Republic. A Kajiwara Kuniyuki RBI double that got Soda Kaii to home plate. Sure, we are a new team in the World Baseball Classic, but look at the other newcomers. Look at the sheer valid insanity that is Sevendia, they're top of Group 2 and haven't even scored themselves 7 runs in 3 games. Sacrilege, but still top of the freaking group. Look at The Fortem, 2nd in Group 3, beating freaking Hapilopper at McCoy. Hapilopper. One of the best teams in baseball. Look at Hicaña, Juan José Calderon hitting 2 against us. Republic of Dixie? Okay sure, their name is not that appropriate, but they took Nova Anglicana 13 innings before calling it a day and handing them a win. And this can continue on. I know we're only 3 games into this grind, but these newcomers have some skill!

And there goes us, there goes Squidroidia, only having 1 run to their name. And we still have Drawkland and Quebec to go. This can only end one way - Really badly. But hey we have 27 games to go, maybe we could win one of those at Newton or elsewhere and prove that we aren't complete garbage. We only let in 10 runs. Darmen let 22 sneak through. Same for Silver Beach. There is some improvement. But with 27 games left to go and the situation not looking brighter, we're going to have more jet lag than a lagged jet and come back to our country with bags in our eyes and a -

"Funeral for Empirical Switzerland."

Huh.

“The Tusaytir is not pleased with these results.” Cransia’s manager, M-242998 shuddered as he turned to see a man in a dark, officer’s style uniform. “How could you allow us to lose to a band of these,” he paused, as if looking for the proper words, “Miscreants. We must do better, Mr. Manager.”

Said manager nodded, “Is our Grace worried that such a blow will sow dissent among the populace?”

The officer waved a hand, “For now, no. As long as we stick to our protocol, keep our players from interacting with foreigners, and foreign players from interacting with our people when they’re here, that shouldn’t be an issue.” He sighed, “A loss here or there at home can be explained away. This,” the officer held out the front page of a newspaper, “Will be out tomorrow, regardless. We may have lost, but no one will ever know.”

The manager bit his lip, noticing that the paper was, indeed, dated for the next day, “Then what, exactly, is the purpose of this conversation?”

“Well,” the soldier took a drag of his smoke, “You’re already more aware of the state of our glorious country than many others. Tusaytir believes that, with the best of Cransia, we should have no trouble dominating such paltry competition.”

Now, of course, M-242998 took a couple steps back. It was true, he was more privy to factual information than the population. That meant he knew what could be coming next.

The military man waved him off, dropping his cigarette, banned for most Cransians, and crushing it underheel. “Relax. In our discussion, we agreed that sending the proletariat out for an international competition was a mistake. After all, as abominable as these capitalists and monarchists are, they do have trained, well fed athletes.”

M-242998 nodded in agreement, “Indeed. It is only by the will of Alhaymana that we have been able to contend whatsoever. And that thing, over there.” He pointed out by far the largest man in the room, M-299814, at a staggering six foot six, two hundred seventy five pounds of lean muscle.

“Precisely!” The officer took off his hat for a moment, straightening his hair, “As you know, he is not a creation of nature. Our the light of the world Alhaymana granted us the knowledge and means with which to genetically engineer a more perfect warrior. And,” he replaced his cap, “We may be able to get you a few more.”

The manager nodded, “Yes, that would…” he trailed off, looking at the tired group of men before him, and the massive freak removing his shirt, revealing marks from punishment. If he had to guess, the mountain of a man hadn’t performed up to standard. Stretch marks on his shoulders, possibly from a non-lethal draw and quartering, and scars wrapped around his wrists from rope rubbing the skin raw time after time. If one looked closely, two of his fingers bore scars around the nail where that appendage had been torn out once. “That would indeed be advantageous to our cause.”

For Marcos Romualdez, it was a refreshing feeling to see a Sangtian national team participate in an international competition.

The multi-billionaire, who managed to escape the destruction of the underground utopia below the Barangayan Ruins, relocated to Southern Filindostan after president Dorigo Dutete gave him a special visa. For ten years, nothing was heard from Marcos, spending little of his fortune to pro-humanitarian efforts in Kabunuklan Island as well as being a major financier of the new infrastructures in the island as part of Filindostan's winning bid for the Campionato Esportiva. What the people didn't know was that through money laundering activities, he is one of the source of funding of the Kisarinbunuk (Kilusang Pangkasarinlan ng Kabunuklan), an insurgent group in the remote municipalities of Sinukabang-Kambing, Tapia, and Birdinuguan, who demand that the Island be independent from Filindostan. It wasn't their true intentions though, as a bigger agenda was planned by the group - force Dutete to sell the entirety of the Filindo Isles to Romualdez and integrate it with the remaining unoccupied portion of the old mainland.

For now, Romualdez funded multiple national sports teams participating in various competitions, aligned with and approved by the Filindo president. He wanted to participate in the World Cup and International Basketball Championships in the future, but noting that his entity, Sangti, was a former World Baseball Classic champion, he seized the opportunity to enter a team in its 50th edition, as well as enter a team for the Campionato Esportiva. The players of his teams were all Filindostanis, however, it was required that only pure Filis ethnic Filindos are allowed in the rosters, as he believed that the Filis are direct descendants of the original Sangtians, when several of the old Sangtians emigrated to several inhabited islands and established an predominantly FIlis community there. For that he started to prepare the team by recruiting many of the young recruits of Kisarinbunuk as well as self-proclaimed baseball enthusiasts of the island.

He had no trouble with the Football squad, as football was one of the major sports played in the archipelago. Baseball, was an entirely different story though, as it was rarely played in the other three islands of Filindostan. He splashed the cash buying official archives of the the WBC including the intense five-game series between Sangti (then known as The Royal Barangay), and Super-Llamaland, in their finals rematch in WBC 29, and won 3-2. He also prepared his hand picked squad by playing tuneup games against domestic squads in baseball countries in Esportiva, and sending the entire roster including the coaching staff to the previous three WBCs, splitting them into groups to cover all the games played in the host nations. This, along with the archives, is what enticed the players in the current roster to play baseball and enter the WBC very much prepared.

The team was on a hot start visiting Ranoria, when they scored four runs in the first three innings, and kept the Ranorians scoreless for the next seven innings to take a 4-2 win. However, they would struggle in their home debut in an converted field in Kabunuklan Sports Complex as The Greater Nordics was leading 7-0, but a grand slam from MJ Bascos reduced the deficit to 7-4 before striking out thrice to end the game on the losing side. They then travelled to Rwekazaland where they conceded the first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing 1-0, the batspeople then found some form of inspiration, scoring two runs to lead 2-1, before capitalizing on a myriad of errors from the opponents to cap off the top of the ninth with five runs, and winning 7-1. TJUN-ia and The Great Pond await at their next two matches before hosting Ranoria again in San Rafael for their sixth game of the campaign.

Some WBC teams might have thought it was beneath them to play a team of Drunk People at the Local Tavern. The 189 were not troubled at all. They did not even know it was unusual.

Unfortunately, they lost their first ever international baseball game. With two out in the 7th inning, -------- allowed an easy pop fly to bounce off the thick green metal shaft that connected its claw to its base. The ball bobbled into the grass and instead of ending the half-inning Nova Anglicana reached base. The Drunk People seized the opportunity and went on to score two runs that inning, putting them in the lead.

The 189 were a little embarrassed, but not as outraged as a team of seasoned professionals would have been. Baseball was new to them, and they were still learning.

Emperor Glenton Gryphon-Bush II Stadium;

It was touted as one of the biggest sporting events in the West Phoenician calender. The World Baseball Classic 50th edition.
It was all the buzz in the sport sections of the newspapers and a popular topic of conversation in sport bars.

Press Agents for the Confederates whipped the fans into a frenzy calling for fans to come out and watch the national team in their first march. Children and teens would gain free entry for the first game.

The first match was scheduled to be played at the Emperor Glenton Gryphon-Bush II Stadium. An extremely good omen to have their first win on their home turf. They would be playing The Fortem; an unranked team, which no one in an administrative position for the team had heard of which many saw as another good sign.

Team Manager Jacob Prosper stated he saw the arrangement as a good sign. Home team advantage where West Phoenician fans would outnumber their opponents in the stands in a sea of purple and gold.
It was the rejuvenation boost the team needed.
While they had pulled off a first place win back in the 44th World Baseball Classic, they slowly started to slip down the ladder during the last few tournaments. They now ranked 40th and lost 8000 memberships from disgruntled fans, who did not want to spend money on membership if the team was fading fast.

Head Coach Julian Pancretè predicted a most watch match, where the Confederates would come out in force and start the climb back up the ladder.

The match was a flurry of activity. Players who had been in training for the last three months were eager to play some ball in front of their fans.
By the bottom of the 1st, both teams were tied. Glen Melbourne scored the first run for the team, showing while he may be getting older he was still a valuable asset.

The Fortem jumped ahead at the top of the third with two of their players performing some amazing bat work, that had outfield scrambling to chase the ball down. The Confederates caught up at the bottom of the 5th with a home run by Wayne Sorbent.
Fans were on the edge of their seats hoping and praying that Lucas Towers or Abigail Whittman could the up the game.
However the idea was dashed by some striking fast balls from the pitching mound.
The Fortem scored another run at the top of the seventh, after Cliff Samuel threw what could only be called the easiest pitch in the game.
The pitch resulted in a fan being ejected from the stadium after a barrage of insults. With their opponents leading 4-2, the Confederates desperately tried to make a comeback but fell flat at the bottom of the 8th when Kevin Dances was tapped out after trying to steal 3rd base.

The match ended on a sour note for the Confederates who lost 2-4. It did not take long for fans to take to West Phoenician social media site Vibr to call for Head Coach Julian Pancretè to be fired.
Responsibility was firmly on his shoulders. The first match loss on home turf was an embassament and it appeared he had no idea how to turn their downward spirals around.
West Phoenicia did not want to drop further in the rankings, it was time for a tougher coach to take the bull by the horns and get The Confederates back into the winning team, they are destined to be.

Julian Pancretè responded by saying it was first game jitters and he was quietly confident, they would bounce back by the end of the season.

Fortemians everywhere are applauding the performance of the Fortem WBC 50 Club... and who wouldn't? The team is 2-1, which is good enough to be tied for 1st in Group 3. Let's go over the games, shall we?

Game One
Things got started in the 1st when Seth Owens hit a double to start the game. After two straight strike-outs, Cecil Cole hit a single to center-field, which was enough to score the speedy Owens to make it 1-0 Fortem. However, West Phoenicia would soon tie it up in the bottom of the 5th with a home run by Wayne Sorbent. After a scoreless inning, the Fortem got right back into action when Norman Cervantes hit a triple to deep right-center that almost left Emperor Glenton Gryphon-Bush II Stadium. But, it was Roland Shelton who hit Fortem's first ever home run in WBC History, after Cliff Samuel threw what could only be called the easiest pitch in the game.The pitch resulted in a fan being ejected from the stadium after a barrage of insults. Fred Saunders would hold off the Confederates to only two runs (a HR in the 4th by Abigail Wittman would threaten the Falcons' lead before a quick strikeout ended the threat.) In the 6th, Darryl Gill would hit a home run to ice the game, although the Confederates almost came back before Kevin Dances was tapped out after trying to steal 3rd base, essentially winning it for Fortem.

Game Two
The game started off with Hapilopper's own Campbell Braxton hitting a solo home run off of Harry Francis to make 1-0 Thrashers. After that, it was a pitching duel to the max as Francis had only allowed three hits after the home run, whereas Hapilopper's Victor Foster had allowed only two hits period, with a no-hitter bid going until the 7th. Trevor Ashley, the set-up man, was set to pitch in the 8th. The inning started with a Jon Forbes single. Then Alan Vang hit a double down the right field line, prompting Forbes to score all-the-way from first, and the game was tied. After Milton Fowler set down the Thrashers in a 1-2-3 inning, Seth Owens and Cecil Cole would both get on base (Owens singled and Cole doubled), which brought up Jon Forbes once more. Forbes smashed a fastball to deep center field to HIT A WALK-OFF THREE-RUN HOME RUN!!!

Game Three
The game started off silently until the 2nd, when Cecil Cole hit a solo home-run to put the Birds up 1-0. The same would follow in the 3rd, only this time, it was Rick Caldwell. 2-0 Fortem... until a two-run home-run by HUElavia tied the game. The next inning would prove disastrous to Howard Hunt, as he only got one out before four runs came crashing in. Hunt was taken out before the second out even happened. Tracy Carr and Larry Joyner would combine for one earned-run as Fortem was down 7-2. Even late inning boosters such as an R.B.I triple by Casey Rojas or a pinch-hit two-run home run by Gordon Gould would keep a comeback as Casey Rojas struck out with the bases loaded to give Fortem their first lose in WBC 50.

All and all, the first three games were a success to The Fortem. Although Howard Hunt needs more control, the rest of the group looks great, and obvious contenders for 1st place in the WBC 50. I'm Chip Ackley, signing off for now.

After the first day Kriegiersien ended the tour with 2 wins. Florida was taken out pretty easily in Schoenwetter most notably thanks to Leon Prince with two homeruns, one in the 6th inning helping the team to 3 points.

Lisander on the other hand was too strong.
„We had only a blank piece of paper concerning their roster. Our scouts failed us and we weren’t able to make more strikeouts“, Manager Bort Bartson said.


In Cransia the team had a hard day, but in the last inning Leon Prince again made a home run and decided the match.
“No, our plans weren’t thwarted by the power of Alhaymana, it was just our inability to hit the damned ball, even though we had the most detailed statistic for each of their pitchers. Thank violet for Leon, I mean, of course there are no gods“, grumbled the manager.


Coming up:

Now a homematch against Abanhfleft awaits before the team has to go to Liventia and then Florida.

“The first two matches are crucial for the dream of the play-offs. Liventias squad seems to be in shift, so that may be our chance.
And in Florida we have to win, we just have to remember that the this is no sunny vacation.”

Prince, Leon.



Leon Prince already started with 14 in the Kriegiersien national team and is now an adult and the big hope for the Kriegiersien campaign. In many nations he is even aloud to drink alcohol now.

His ability to hit other people with a stick nearly brought him into the hockey team as defender, but after also fruitless playing chess, monopoly, golf, hide and seek and handball someone saw his talent for baseball. Or at least his ability to hit the ball to the moon.

In the last years his body grew in size, what was partly to him getting older but also because, as his sponsor says “his healthy diet of marshmallows”.
“Just look at his arms, no, not the belly, the muscular arms.”

After his first success with the Schoenwetter Scorpions he was soon traded to the to the presidents club to secure its dominance in the future, being the player with the most home runs in the Kriegiersien Top league for 5 seasons now.

Poor Start For Harrison's Guarantee as Krauts Stumble Out to 1-2 Start...Just Like Last Year

The Krauts had everything in their favor. And yet, they struggled in their opening matches


Last season, Ranoria's second foray into the Classic, was mildly successful. A 15-15 slate in which their best baseball came in the late-middle portion of the season was something that inspired hope. We brought in more Ranorians whom had elected to go play abroad in a pair in Erik Schmidt and Parker Majors, both whom have been successful on the Banijan stage. So, better pitching, returning most of our starters, all of whom now have experience against international competition, that's a recipe for success.

Better yet, the team played four warm up style games against one of the best squads in the world. Two games were hosted at our very own Cardinal Auditorium in Nashville, and we played two games in Banija. Going 2-2 against that strong of a team seemed to indicate favorable results to come. Only, it wasn't so.

Our opener came in the Sangti city of San Rafael, an unranked team who had not participated at least in the last tournament. Ranoria was certainly the favorite here, but dropped the game, with our entire roster struggling against the squad. Tommy Verona, oddly enough, did not come in for that opener, and that likely contributed to the team racking up four runs early on. Later, Henderson Mausse would state that he wanted Verona's first outing to come in front of a Ranorian crowd, mostly for the fanfare.

But we can come back! Tommy Verona did indeed make the start against Tha Great Pond, a team of, yes, sentient ducks. He was splendid, pitching a no-hitter through four innings, and allowing just two hits, and no one to get on base, before making an exit before the seventh. That's when things got a little dicey. The Krauts were up 7-0 over their opponents, resulting in the tossing in of the less adept Erin Phelps of the Cleveland Sabers. His first pitch hit a member of the opposition.

Claudia Duck took the fastball to the wing, and the Ranorian crowd's murmurs immedietely went silent. After all, that small of a player? She would need medical attention if she were to survive! Well, that's what everyone thought, anyway.

Instead, Claudia Duck came out swinging, no pun intended, squawking in defiance and tossing her bat in the air before charging at Phelps. Phelps stood, shocked for a moment, before realizing that this was, indeed, a real threat. His teammates, on or off the field, did not come to his aid. In fact, every one of them was caught on screen howling in laughter as Phelps retreated step by step, taking pecks to the shin, before finally tripping over his assailant and falling to the ground hard. And the assault didn't stop their. Claudia took the opportunity to hop up onto Phelps with a little flap, and proceeded to peck at his forehead, just once. With that message sent, she decided to spare the poor pitcher, and waddled off.

There was no dugout-clearing brawl, just jokes about Phelps being humiliated by a duck on not national, but international, television. Once the smoke cleared, and Claudia was given her spot on base, the game resumed. Phelps, of course, was shaken. Can you blame him? Any man's pride would be wounded after such an ordeal.

Better yet, that pitcher would immedietely Stephen Duck to get on base, pushing Claudia into scoring position, but with Donald Duck, their pitcher, up to bat, perhaps Phelps could catch a break. No such luck.

The Ducks had shown impressive waddling speed throughout the contest, and we'll be questioning the physics of their ability to throw the ball across the field for weeks to come, but let's make something clear: Donald Duck does not care about your preconceived notions of the abilities of duckmanity. Phelps pitched a hard fastball, and it didn't matter. Donald knocked it clear out of the bark, laughing all the way as he waddled casually around the bases.

Erin Phelps was pulled soon after, and the comeback quelled, but these ducks are certainly a team that can play with anyone.

Despite the strong showing, heading into TJUN-ia was a test. The second highest ranked team in our group, this was an important matchup if the team was indeed intent on making the knockout stages of this tournament. It was one that ended in a bloodbath. Instead of that statement win, TJUN-ia's pitching thwarted everyone we put up to the plate. Tim von Kuhn did manage to knock in a two-run homer in the fourth inning that would result in a pitching change, and the Krauts ran in two more scores in the fifth, but this game was over by then, as the battin' jags run this one up with eleven runs.

Notes from this contest include that it made three straight games where Jesse Griffith, the team's newest and youngest addition, failed to get a hit. The youngster was given a starting spot due to his flashes of potential, but if he keeps playing like this, that won't last long.

So, were our opening games humbling? Certainly. But not world-ending. The Krauts still have plenty of time to turn it around, and we have to expect that they can't win every three game slate, just as they wouldn't win every series in a more uniform format.
