Common cold (which is what COVID essentially is) has been around for millennia. Never doubt the ability for wolves to prey on sheep. The pandemic is over when it’s said to be over. As pessimistic as this sounds it wouldn’t be the first time fear of disease was used for control.

Unlikely. The fatality rate is about 0.008% if you actually die from it. Should you die from other causes but have COVID in your system as an ancillary contributor or it was just present at some point inside you before you died (which the vast majority of deaths are from these two categories) then it’s 0.04% death rate.

It’s been almost a year and only now reaching one million? Nah, fortunately this virus ain’t got the legs nor the chops to kick Humanity’s teeth in like Spanish Flu did. If it did the infected rate would be 1/3 of the overall population with a proportional death rate likely approaching over 500 million by now. We’re not even close to either.

Spanish flu got a huge leg up by WW1. No measures were taken to mitigate it until after the war. Add to that the fact ventilators didn't exist.

If we had done nothing then the deaths would have been much higher. Probably not 50 million but a really unpleasant number.

The problem with lockdowns, from my six months of experience, is the detrimental effect they have on mental health. You can't interact in-person, everything you had to look forward to is canceled or so drastically pared as to feel like a knockoff, your favorite activities are virtual--you literally cannot escape the regulations or the fact that the virus exists. Even in places like houses of worship, there are ropes and strings and colorful stickers reminding you that you must follow directions and nothing is normal. The bottom line is that it amps up my anxiety, except it is not something that exists in my own head. It is a physical trigger, and it is ubiquitous.

That isn't true, since the majority of CO2 comes from massive corporations which barely stopped rather than individuals doing anything. The net emissions into the atmosphere changed, but not that significantly in the grand scheme of things.

By definition it is the same family as the common cold. Common cold is just a catch all non-medical term for minor illnesses causing symptoms in your respiratory system. Possibly other systems for those with comorbid conditions like diabetes, AIDs, or already sick with something else. Mainly Coronaviruses and Rhinoviruses which cause “common colds” (COVID-19 which is scientifically classified as SARS-Cov-2). Influenzas are also sometimes lumped in, why “Cold and Flu,” is a phrase and the latter kills up to 650k globally a season (December-February is typical) with no batting an eyelash from anyone outside of the medical field. Over thirty million Americans alone last year were estimated to have been infected or sick (symptomatic from seasonal influenza).

True to the casual name the vast majority of these ailments under “common colds” or even flu are non-fatal. Giving either no noticeable health problems or minor symptoms. Death mainly afflicting compromised immune system groups, infants, and the elderly.

Now, as mentioned above by Fartsniffage if humanity had done nothing there likely would have been more deaths and hospitalizations. Not downplaying it at all. But when you get to the meat of the virus it’s not all that 28 Days Later level of fear mongering it’s been made out to be. Odds are half of NS has already had contact with it and lived.
