How do you like it working for a school as opposed to any other IT business? I imagine you might not have many colleagues to rely upon when shit hits the fan.

It has it's challenges, high school kids are relentless in their attempts to get around proxy firewalls. Before I took my current position I worked in corporate IT, so I carried that SOP over and basically redesigned the campus' network and domains and locked that shit down hard. The school originally contracted their IT from a couple of different local IT companies and to be honest save for one guy at one of those companies, the school's servers and network were set up by retards.

I have a couple of peeps I can rely on when shit hits the fan, however 9 out of 10 times I can handle it myself.

I feel that. I used to do SysAdmin shit for the DoD and there's absolutely no shortage of idiots that procrastinate projects and leave it for the next guy that comes along.

Glad you have the skill-set that enables you to do a lot of lone wolf stuff. I half considered applying to a few schools where I live but working alone like that is kinda out of my comfort zone.

Officially a Business Intelligence consultant, which in practice - for me - translates to software engineer and junior architect.

Started off doing PLSQL but nowadays I've spent more time setting up and maintaining the BI infrastructure along with my colleagues. It can be a bit challenging, especially with the high security requirements (the data includes global financial transactions between banks/companies) and complex architecture, but it's interesting work - especially since there's a growing focus on automation and DevOps lately.

Data visualisation projects
Build websites
Edit videos
Consult for a major US tech firm
Consult for a 3D start up company

I'm pretty lucky to have multiple revenue streams given the time.

I've been planning on getting started with building websites to make some money on the side, but honestly I don't even know how start off.

Out of curiosity, how did you come to develop so many streams of income? Been working as an independent long?

Yeah, so I spotted a little niche where I find medium sized businesses who haven't updated their site since, like, the 90's because they think it costs too much. So I just do it for a one-off price of $2000 where web agencies charge something like $20-40K. I used to build in .html and stuff but now I just use WIX, just plug and play really.

Been working independently since '16 when I Jerry Maguire'd out of my former job, most of my work is focused on data visualisation and there's just not much competition out there really.

Aye, it's remarkable how much demand there is for some areas. My more senior colleagues have always advised me to become an expert in PL/SQL and I'd be guaranteed work until the end of my days, but so far I've never really had the opportunity to devote myself to it.

What should I understand from "data visualization"? Data science?

This is a good point; thanks. As there is a limit on the number of poll options, I am going to take a perhaps somewhat unorthodox approach and lump IT developers in with the artisans.

I feel like independent software developers are like the artisans of the digital age, and those who contribute to larger infrastructural projects could perhaps be compared to architects and masons.

-Added software developer option; please feel free to re-vote :)

By the way where does Transportation fit?
