TAPALUPÉ, TEQUILO - Welcome to the second season of Liga-TQ, Tequilo's premier domestic pitxi (football) competition; the early signs are good - revenues are up, attendances were impressive, commercial opportunities are on the increase and we've even got some foreign types in the league now. Not to mention some fancy graphics on the newswire... sit back, enjoy the gloss, and watch the season unfold.

LIGA-TQ SEASON TWO
INTRODUCTION

As with the inaugural season Liga-TQ sits as an extension to the state championships, which divide into six leagues of sixty plus clubs with full pyramids under each of the three-division leagues. At the end of the State Championships, teams qualify on merit for the 'closura' - the Liga-TQ.

Liga-TQ itself divides into three top flight sections, each one made up of six teams - the Primera for the six state champions; the Proxima for the six state runners-up, and the Piqueña for the six third-placed teams of the state championships. Each division of six plays a home-away round robin of ten games within their group, to decide a final table of 18. The winner of the Primera will thus be declared the national champion and win a place in the IFCF Champions League, while second, third and fourth in this division will be awarded births in the IFCF Challenger's Cup. We hope this year that fifth placed in the Primera will receive an invitation to the Vilitan Cove for a little holiday football to spice up next season, meaning only the last place in the top six will miss out on some extra-curricular pitxi.

In order to confirm places for the Liga-B Trophy, the winners of each state second tier - the 2-Sección - will also compete in an end of season competition, the Liga-TQ2 Eliminatorio, to decide the second tier national winner and the three births for the Trophy.

New for this season, the Liga-J national championship for youth teams expands to two divisions, with ten additional teams joining the bottom four teams from last season's Liga-J to compete in Liga-J2. Next season a further six teams will be added to create a total pool of 30 teams, competing in three tiers of 10 clubs.

NEWS: LIGA-TQ
STRUCTURAL GRUMBLES ALREADY

With the success of last seasons' inaugural Liga-TQ, clubs that enjoyed the opportunity to compete in the Closura are already voicing their reluctance to give up their place, with both Peru Urzagui and Real Gardaresso making noises that competing in the national league should be guaranteed and not dependent on qualifying through the state championships. Naturally both state leagues, of Puezan and Antivador, have hit back hard to head off the idea big clubs might want to break away and form a permanent Liga-TQ. Real have suggested leaving behind a B-squad to compete in the state championship, making them instantly unpopular with millions of fans but certainly making other big clubs nod thoughtfully, grateful it was the glamour club Real that said what they were all thinking. Meanwhile CFFA, the second most successful pitxi club and probably the biggest, addressed their own problem of having only qualified for the third tier Piqueña with no chance of IFCF qualification last year, suggesting the 18-team Liga-TQ should not be divided into three distinct divisions, allowing all 18 teams the chance to win through to the international competitions. By implication, playing a 34-match round robin, they are talking about exiting the state championships too, of course.

With only one season gone and that considered a huge success, clubs are clearly hungry for more, and often. Don't expect this one to go away any time soon - Liga-TQ Commissioner Pablo Invocador has remained tight-lipped on the early dissent, but clubs will feel he probably supports them in separating from the State Championships. Broadcast media, naturally, want more games at a higher quality and are likely to stir up more trouble for the States through their targeted reportage, and ultimately it could be them who decide, next time they get their cheque book out for the second round of broadcast rights, due for Liga-TQ Season 5. This one will rumble on for years, most likely.

As mentioned above, as Liga-TQ continues to build it's global brand, it plans to apply for a place in the Vilitan Cove Invitational based on this coming season's standings to send the Primera Sección's fifth-placed team out into the multiverse the following season; whilst crucially, at home, the doors will be open to foreign players to glam up the Liga as the UPT removes caps on non-Costelloan players in the top tier of the state championships. Of course it will be a few seasons and a lot of cash before the top line players will be seen over here but already moves are afoot to get some interesting fellows with exotic-sounding names on the teamsheets of the top clubs. The UPT has also announced, for the end of the season, a charity cálculo - that's a derby, rivalry, or in this case, exhibition fixture - between a domestic Tequilo XI (based on league performances) against a Cosmopolita XI, the best foreign imports for the season. Details of the venue to follow.

NEWS: CLUB UPDATES
MOTO GOING FOR IT

MOTOZINTLA
The Make Moto Great Again campaign inaugurated this season by club president Gedeó Dosrius has caused amusement across the country with many simply asking, "Again?". Whether that refers to the many false dawns at Moto over the years or the cynical view that they have never been great is unclear. What is certain though, Dosrius has confirmed he will be opening his chequebook - big spending is on the cards, much to the excitement of Moto fans.

HAÏTIENS
Talking of big money, the sleeping giants from the capital city Tapalupé have been acquired by ambitious and some might say shadowy hedge funders Grupo Taxhavn as the first step in what is rumoured to be a huge multiversal project to build a network of clubs. Haïtiens, disastrously relegated to the second tier last season, are one of the best supported clubs in the country but have never made such a huge following very happy, with a paucity of success down the years. Grupo Taxhavn say their first acquisition will become the jewel in the crown of their portfolio.

JAGUAR IXTACOMITÁN
The Jaguares are announcing a new sponsorship deal with Kip Dynamite Gangsta Copy & Pasta Shop, the nationwide chain of what are frankly pretty rubbish cheapskate copiers, that provide free cardboard pasta while you wait and are manned by first time entrants to the labour market - that is to say, 12-year old work experience kids with no retail or copy skills, low level literacy and appalling diction. Fans are not impressed.

CF FRANTXIZKO-A
CFFA go one better than Jaguares, well, probably a few million better, by announcing a record sponsorship deal with Bonesea plant machinery manufacturers Heavy Products. As The Golds watch rivals Pitxi-Pitxi 77 stack up trophies and become the clear number one team in the country, and teams like Moto and Haïtiens hit the financial jackpot, finally some good news as they declare that this deal will allow them to compete with the best again.

SC RAITÍ
Meanwhile famous old club SC, one of the three oldest clubs in pitxi history in Tequilo, have warned they have run out of funds after the withdrawal from the board of former Tequiloan President billionaire Cecili Planelas, who is being investigated on financial corruption charges. Players have already been put on notice - tighten your belts lads, who knows where your next paycheck is coming from. It seems unthinkable, but could SC Raití be going bust...?

NEWS: MANAGER INS & OUTS
OR NOT, MOSTLY

It has been a quiet season in managerial terms, with just the one big story to note - and it's a whopper:

EQUIPO CAIMÁN
The Gators, fresh from the retirement of manager Narciso Aguiar who led them to the Guastenango state title last season and 5th place in Liga-TQ, have stunned their fans by appointing 31-year old youth team boss and former Beomark international Christoffer Henjum as head coach, ahead of Aguiar's assistant Fiodor Sion who was favourite to step up. He remains in the assistant role to untested Henjum, who has big shoes to fill.

THE HEADLINERS

OSCAR BIENVENIDA to MOTOZINTLA - ₸3.75m
There was never any chance that Tumuloa Xico would manage to hold on to their young goalkeeping prodigy who is already a permanent fixture in the national team, so this was all about transfer management. And they got it right. With cash to burn and desperate to compete with the best under their 'Make Moto Great Again' mantra, Motozintla were an easy mark. Having broken the domestic transfer record twice already in a matter of days, this one nearly doubled the record. A great pay day for 'Tum-Tum'.

XAIME MEDAL to 1830 CATHAIR - free transfer
At the opposite end of the management scale, Florentino had been keeping their midfield prospect on ice as he developed into a first class player, but misjudged their timing and lost the young international vice-captain on a free to Audioslav superclub 1830 Cathair when he opted not to extend his contract. They will look at the fee Tumuloa got for Oscar and wonder how they managed to mess this one up so badly. Florentino fans are thoroughly disillusioned with their board over this.

THE BIG TEN

FÁBRICA TAPALUPÉ
Probably The Spanners key piece of business in the off-season was extending the contract of Ricardo Bailén, 22 - the right winger has attracted plenty of attention with his performances with the national team. Meanwhile new NT call-up Tol Chicote, 19, who impressed in the IAC-10, is promoted from the youth team. Fábrica dip into international waters, signing of Nepharan free agent Fiete Tannhaeuser. The winger, 29, is immediately appointed team captain and replaces veteran Jaime Dengra, upped and gone to Real Gardaresso.

ÁRGON TACRANZA
Having won the inaugural Liga-J youth championship, Árgon keep faith with their boys, promoting youth player of the year Jacob Emade along with Juan Manuel Notario and Samuel Cedillo to the senior squad. Highly rated young striker Hugo Rabellino goes out on loan though, to Copa winners El Quetan. Dealing a major blow for The Argonauts, key attacking midfielder Ricardo Mancebo hands in a transfer request and heads to CFFA for ₸800k, in what is a coup for The Golds.

RESPLENDIENTE
Goalkeeper Román Pousa, only 31, announces his retirement after ongoing problems with his snappy wrists; he will join the Black & Silvers coaching team as promising former back-up Tepin Mecatl-Rubió is given the #1 shirt for the season. Striker and former captain Isaias Magrina, 33, is another heading to El Quetan, with Tamarindian Emanuel Fonseca taking on the armband for the coming season. Defenders Cygnet Valeri from the ASU and Farv Ésüá Àìûmôr are brought in under the Cosmopolita rule on free transfers.

SC PEDREGAL
It is a fairly quiet window for The Whistlers apart from the big news that moneybags recruiters Motozintla came in and stole away their best player, midfielder Zaquiel Goris. The 29-year old goes to Moto for what was, for half an hour, a domestic transfer record fee of ₸1.8m before the announcement of the transfer of Oscar Bienvenido. The club opted not to bring anyone in themselves, but got contract extensions over the line for midfielders Xusto Padron & Xerome Mira, and defender Wayanasi.

ACACOYAGUA
As with other clubs during the recent rise of a half-decent national team, one of Acaco's key priorities was to get their internationals signed up to longer contracts - Huachalla, Camilo Caira and emerging young defender Patricio Seco all did just that, taking away some of the worries. Midfielder Vilca Qori, 29, also signed an extension before being involved in a road traffic accident on the way home from that meeting. He's fine, of course. But retired. Those knees won't come back to life.

PITXI-PITXI 77
After a glorious return to the top of the state championship and the first Liga-TQ title, the 77o are largely keeping faith with the squad they have for another season, except for a swift move to nab Nepharan free agent Con Hatzileftheriou, 23, as new team captain. The right-sided midfielder is joined by another Cosmopolita on the left, Farv Çè Êf, 21, while in the middle young international Cio Çenturion is promoted out of the academy. National team defender Chicchan has signed a two year contract extension.

CF FRANTXIZKO-A
The Golds made one of the big moves of the domestic transfer window by poaching attacking midfielder Ricardo Mancebo from Árgon for ₸800k, as they splash their new sponsorship cash. Farv striker Mâártën Âllámbâlár comes in on a free while promising young Reçueço winger Rémy Lussier, 22, who has been with the club since he was a cricket in the long grass, looks set to emerge on the right this season. Fans though are indicating their frustrations at the lack of further reinforcements.

ATLÁS CIUREDOR
Atlás have had a modestly active window, signing relative unknowns Benedict de Leonardo, 22, an Audioslav striker from Basque University in the Hinodeji empire-thingy, and Steinaux defensive midfielder Tinni Grímólfursson, 19, who will begin in the Atlás academy before getting his chance with the seniors. Exciting young fullback José Tavia, now on the national team list, gets a new four-year contract to secure his place with the club.

REAL GARDARESSO
Working the Cosmopolita rule to their full advantage, Real have turned to the potential of foreign nationals and hope their extensive scouting network will pay off. Making headlines was their loan capture of Hornchurch prospect Jodi Servais, the Euran left back, 18, going straight into the first eleven. He is joined by Zetan defender Lukabor Ilić, 21, and the ₸750k capture of winger Jaime Dengra from Fábrica Tapalupé. Young keeper Castañon Loriguero is promoted from the Real academy system.

FLORENTINO
Perhaps one of the busiest teams in the market this window, Florentino first frustrated, then delighted, then positively enraged their fanbase with so many key changes. The loss of Xaime Medal to 1830 Cathair is hard to come back from, and was compounded by released Martí Calderon to Bombarralense, another key loss to the Audioslavian league. Coming the other way is striker Venâncio Paiva from KT Koroatuz on a free and veteran Bonesea defender Scredda Smith. Los Violetas also lost two massive prospects to foriegn clubs with Christian Duque heading to CSKA Quebec and Cornieles de Gareta to Yenvil Town in Taeshan. It is all change in Florento.

MOTO, TANO & THE REST

MOTOZINTLA
Club president Gedeó Dosrius promised a big spending season, and the Moto fans got it in spades. Signing young national goalkeeper Oscar Bienvenida from Tumuloa Xico for a Tequiloan transfer record ₸3.75m was the third consecutive domestic transfer record they broke in two days, after midfielder Zaquiel Goris from SC Pedregal (₸1.8m) and cup-winning striker Mendo Davila from El Quetan CF (₸2m). Moto also signed young Farv striker Vâásk Çêwé on a free transfer. Watch them go this season... allegedly.

EL QUETAN CF
Cup success brought a heap of predators and a huge rebuild for El Tano, with prospect Antigono Epalza to Real Chinchinhua in Taeshan for NS$2m, striker Quentin de Pena to Pingstrand FC (TSL) on a free at the end of his contract, Anibal Troche to Corinthinals NL (Nephara) for free and Mendo Davila to Moto. With decent income from that and the Epalza deal, El Tano converted their cash into players, signing Verres Madinagoitia, Léo Makeba (loan) & Hugo Rabellino (loan) from Argón, Isaías Magrina from Resplendiente, and promising youngster Worenigho Deli from lower league Costello Raití.

Welcome to the second annual edition of ¡TQ!, brought to you by your favourite pitxi newspaper, GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL-a!. What's that you say, where is the first edition? You mean you don't have a copy? Well, we are mighty sorry to hear that because we're all sold out of last season's annual - perhaps you can prise one off someone on tBay...

This year we bring you six completely new stories, some of them are one-offs, some to be continued next year, as if you can wait that long. GLAMOURISING LIGA-TQ WITH THE 'COSMOPOLITAS' RULE

Museo de Pitxi, Plaza Pitxi, Camino Recto, Distrito Socrates, Tapalupé, in the conference room of the UPT - that's the Tequiloan FA to you and me:

It's the end of the first season of Liga-TQ, and frankly, it's been a tremendous success. Top officers of the Big Ten clubs, plus a few other big clubs who aren't Big Ten only because they haven't won enough, have gathered together with senior officials from the UPT and the Liga, to talk about how they can make it even more successful next season. By which I mean, of course, how it can make more money. There are a couple of club presidents here, a few MDs, a CEO or two, and a commercial club shop manager from Fábrica Tapalupé feeling very out of her depth. But she's just proposed a 'Cosmopolita' amendment to the foreign player rules of the league, and it has certainly piqued their interest.

"So we have an overall limit of three foreign players in the registered squad of 25," says Carolina Ruiz, nervously, "which includes all the Costelloan countries - Tamarindia, Wight, Bonesea and the rest - as well as any other foreign national from throughout the multiverse. That's a lot of untapped potential to squeeze into three slots. Everyone wants at least one Tamarindian and a Bonesman in the team - it doesn't leave any room for frankly millions of better foreigners. And that's just those on the Hinodejin Empire free transfer list. Then there is the rest of the world. We have a huge influx of Farv refugees from the accented anarchy of Rüṛȃŀåňḓïşŧøñȉçă - excuse my pronunciation - and we already know they are inherently better at football than anyone else and would win everything all the time if they could only be bothered. Fábrica Tapalupé would like to propose a 'Cosmopolitas' amendment to the foreign player rule - allowing clubs to tap into a multiverse of talent without such tight restriction. Perhaps no limits whatsoever..."

"It would," observed Señor Pablo Invocador, Liga-TQ Commissioner, "give our brand global appeal. Imagine Xíxì Êns at Fábrica! Or - "

"Thorsten Kramer at Moto!" interrupted Motozintla owner, President and CEO, Gedeó Dosrius, always one to make a noise.

"Indeed," said Pablo, patiently, "imagine that. Anyway, I take the point. A good plan, young shopkeeper from Fábrica. Are we proposing entirely unrestricted foreigners?"

Wise old head Señor Lepe, President of the UPT, did not think so. "We should have a quality threshold. Let's say, unrestricted signings of foreign internationals, to keep standards up. I don't want half a dozen Farv kids at every club with no papers and no backstory," - here referring, one assumes, to the half a dozen Farv trainees brought into the Galaxía youth team with no papers and no backstory.

The Galaxía CEO, Eliana Sáez, was stung by the implied criticism from Señor Lepe. "All very well," she said, a reddish flush of anger in her neck, "but let's take a look at that - Chimera Moxham to Spartangrad for 40 million NS$? Brian Bond to Oakstone for 30? Mikhail Jashkin to Directus for 24 million? - "

"Hang on," wondered the MD of Atlás Ciuredor, "are you telling me a club in Eura signed a bloke called Brian for 30 million NS$?"

"I am telling you that," said Eliana, "and nobody has even heard of Gudrun Bißmeier because she plays in Havynwilde but she's been bought for nearly twenty five mill by a club from the Crystal Empire!"

"Oh come on, that's not true!" / "You have to be kidding me!" / "Playing in Havenwylde and worth what? Get out of here!" ...and various other cries of derision rose up in the conference room.

"Seriously," explained Eliana, "we can't compete for internationals. Gedeó here spent nearly 4 million on the best damn player in the country and everyone is having a heart attack. Who else here could even afford that? So who is going to splash twenty five million on a teenager coming out of a nomark league - albeit a Valanoran - " and then waiting for further elf-phobic derision to calm down, "or a top international, lets say Thorsten Kramer, what's he going to cost?"

She had a point.

"So about those three million Hinodejin free transfers?" wondered Pablo Invocador.

"Sign them up," said Señor Lepe, adding the 'Cosmopolitas' amendment to the rulebook.

BONEY MOSEY
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SPIVVY SPITTALNINNY MOSEY ACKANARD

Season 1

He's the only man in recorded history who can speak Tequiloan with a Spittalninny accent - there have been many imitators, especially of late, but no-one has quite got it right. Even much loved television entertainer and impressionist Paulo Casablanca says it's impossible - he regularly refuses requests to try because, as he points out, his professional reputation is at stake. There is only one Mosey Ackanard; and in his first season as a head coach at Mejillones Lipa, where he saw out his more than respectable playing career, he's impressed mightily as he took 'The Mussels' into the third tier play-offs in the Antivadorio state championship by the skin of their teeth, and then surprised anyone who knows anything about 3-Sección football by winning promotion with victories over much more fancied clubs Laguna de Léon and Llaro Marín. It may all have come to a premature end at the half-way point of the season - Mejillones' punt on a former player with only moderate coaching experience with the reserves of nearby part-timers Hoqué-Coqué seemed at best a shot in the dark and to some, a desperate and clueless shot in the dark. The Mussels were in the bottom three with two wins in 19 games and heading for an embarrassing season. Everyone outside the club felt Mosey's first attempt at head coach would probably be his last as he got his marching orders midway through an humiliation. But Mejillones backed their former player, who had been a popular veteran in the autumn of his playing days, and surprised everyone by finding a few pesos for him to spend in the domestic mid-season transfer window. The movements were remarkable, for their quantity and, as it turned out, their quality.

"Look," says Mosey, a cheeky grin on his face, "I'm not going to kid you that I thought our position was down to my management - the lads we had in the dressing room were a shower. Nice boys, couldn't kick a bucket with a donkey's hind leg, most of them. I told the board when I started we'd need reinforcements but they wanted me to go with what I had. I came back to them after game 19, and I says, 'fellas, you take my point here? I need half a dozen lads who know a pitxi ball when it smacks them in the chops, or we're plum out of luck'. They weren't convinced of course - they spent too much time reading the papers, where it was all 'Mosey out!' and whatnot. But I said to them, 'do you want people to say we're worse than Chimpancés Guayabal?' Well straight away the Chairman reaches into his pocket, he's gone pale, and he pulls out a chequebook and pen!"

Mosey signed eight players in the midseason window, bringing in a mixture of seasoned lower league veterans and raiding the club he is mainly associated with as a player - Socrates in the capital Tapalupé - picking a couple of lads out of their impressive academy who 'The Thinkers' didn't feel would make the grade; he also loaned in two that the club believe will be stars, young defenders Ryhoro Maurr and Sakeh Nkisi. They had an outstanding second half of the season.

"I was on the Antivador ferry to the mainland at 3am every day for a fortnight," says Mosey, "and driving all round the country trying to get in the players I wanted - the chairman said he didn't have enough money to put me on the plane. Poor old Skela [Mosey's wife] was making sandwiches for me and Viçente [de Velasquillo, Mosey's assistant coach at Mejillones] before we set off, and let me tell you, Viçente is the fussiest eater she's ever met. Every day he's on a different nutritional path. You don't need that at 2am when even Orlo [Mosey's Tequiloan Bison Terrier] was moaning about it being too early."

Six players also left in the window, and Mosey with his professorial assistant Viçente de Velasquillo did a stunning job turning the fortunes of Mejillones Lipa, winning fourteen of nineteen games in the second half of the season to sneak into sixth place and a play-off berth ahead of Mecánicos on the last day of the regular season. Fans at the club were quickly turned around in their opinion of the man who saw out his playing career there, by the seaside, and had provided them with some rare, if old, quality on the pitch back in the day. And his coaching looks impressive, they say, with a display of real tactical nous and an eye for a player. The eight signings and two loanees more or less formed a new team that hit the ground running, and proved to be the best team in the division for that run-in. Led by new captain Joanes de Baeça, 28, a cultured midfielder much in the mould of Mosey himself, the former Juventoyan trainee had not quite made it at the top level but had surprisingly stepped down from the second tier Errentes Monvador to buy into Mosey's vision and was by far the best player in the division. But how did Mosey convince him to sign?

"Skela made a picnic," he says, "and the family all went off to the Gardaresso Hills for a day trip. I called Joanes up but he wasn't keen, so I said, 'look, why don't you come meet me for a coffee' - I knew he lived down the road and I didn't mention the family day out; I picked him up and drove him to this viewing point, there's Skela with this bloody great ostrich-meat sub, all the trimmings; and my young sons come up all covered in food wanting his autograph, even Orlo the terrier's getting excited and Viçente's there picking at his food as usual. 'You might as well stay for lunch' says Skela, even though it's clear he wants to go, but no-one can refuse my Skela of course and he tucks into this ostrich sub. He loves it doesn't he? Half an hour later I leave Viçente at the picnic and drive poor Joanes straight to my chairman who has a contract ready. Job done."

Job done indeed.

ANTIVADOR

Despite a difficult pre-season which saw them lose key players Xaime Medal and Martí Calderon to the Audiolav poaching/scouting system, and huge fan unrest directed mainly at the board of directors, Los Violetas stunned Antivadorios everywhere by dominating the state championship from start to finish, ensuring their first state title in seven years and taking them back to the top of the all-time list for the islands. Florentino head into Liga-TQ for the first time and will be much fancied for the national title based on their performances so far, though no-one would've guessed coming into this season. Real Gardaresso, hoping to match Humberto as the only Antivadorio team to win three-in-a-row, were a distant and disappointing third, despite the impresssive young Euran loanee Jodi Servais winning wide admiration. Real will have to settle for a place in the 13-18th standings of the Pequena division, while Atlás miss out altogether. Juventoyan enjoyed their own revival to take the Proxima place. Both promoted sides found the going too tough and drop back down to 2-Sección at the first time of asking.

In 2-Sección, giants Atlético Lipa, shockingly relegated last season and having to endure the indignity of playing Mosey Ackanard's cross-town minnows Mejillones Lipa on an equal footing, bounce back at the first time of asking with a good showing, although they were pushed all the way by Comuna. Disappointment followed for Comuna though, as Gallandaires won through the play-offs to secure the second spot in the top flight next season. At the bottom it was a straight return for two of the three promoted teams, but Mosey Ackanard wove some magic with his unlikely Mussels to orchestrate a great escape on the last day of the season, defying the odds to secure a second season in tier two, and adding to his own stock in the process. "What we have done here is like the 77o [Pitxi-Pitxi 77] winning the Champions League," he said, not overstating it at all, "an absolute miracle with the resources I've got here. The players have been brilliant - but I'll need to be talking to the chairman about half a dozen recruits if we're going to pull this off again. If we don't we'll get found out pretty damn quick."

Daring Monvador, former state champions and one-time regular in 1-Sección, survived the indignity of appearing in the third tier for the first time to make an instant return to 2-Sección; at the foot of the table, after two consecutive bottom place finishes, Palacios Gardaresso are obliged to compete in a relegation play-off and will now be preparing for life outside the State Championship system after aggregate defeat to Cortadores Margarita. So it is disappointment for both Gardaresso sides this season, though the scale of each is incomparable to the other.

MI CLUB DE FÚTBOL
FROM KEYBOARD WARRIORS TO CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGERS

Season T.-1

The whole point of going to a football match to support your team is so you can shout at them for doing everything wrong and demand substitutions; so that you can yell your tactical suggestions at the manager and give feedback on the recruitment policy to the board of directors. Of course, it is also a useful platform for administering praise in the form of wild screaming and jumping up and down with your clenched fists in the air, although being a Sardíneros supporter myself, I rarely get the opportunity to enjoy this particular pleasure. Equally, you may wish to share some constructive criticisms with your opponent team, in particular their goalkeeper during that half of the match when he's just in within earshot at your end of the ground. And you can exchange some experiential anecdotes with your fellow fans of the opposing team in the visitor enclosure, usually in the form of more screams or hand signals but occasionally through the exchange of objects like seats, and bottles, or even charitable donations of low denomination coins. In my day if you couldn't make it to the match, you often had the television at which you could yell, gesture, throw things or jump up and down in front of as a form of replacement, knowing of course that unless you had some uncanny gift, your importuning and diagnostications largely went unheard by anyone other than your next door neighbours. Or you could go down to your local, join your mates and do the same thing, knowing at least you were screaming with, or at, like-minded fellows who would be happy to exchange objects with you or the television including bar stools, pint glasses and pool balls.

Today things are different, what with the internet and anti-social media - now you can do all your remote feedback from the comfort of your WiFi and still be heard, sort of, via such platforms as twii.tur, ForumForRanting, and of course WCDT. You can Twiit at your fellow yuman beans and other assorted anthropomorphic football supporters, players, coaches, managers and managing directors, and so long as your mother isn't reading over your shoulder, you can use the most brusque language if it so suits, all without fear of being kidney punched by a hooligan who has taken issue with your point of view. Apparently, for those who do not have the courage for a face-to-face exhange of opinions on the terraces, it is quite liberating.

All this got two Teq techies from Chazapa, Benjamí Sellas and Mauricio Salgado, quite excited. Outside of their day jobs in software development, the two San Joaxha supporters spend their leisure time divided between sitting at the computer playing Máximo (a football management strategy game) and sitting at the computer abusing their team via Twii.tur. They wondered if they could combine their passion for armchair wifi football management with their skillset as software developers. What if, they wondered, you could create a multi-user platform like Máximo where everyone worked together to manage a club - and the club was real? Select the team, pick the tactics, hire and fire the manager, design the kit, choose the stadium refreshments and write the matchday programme.

Enter Mi Club de Fútbol, or, to keep the keystrokes at a minimum for the less able keyboard warriors, MiCF.

Two years ago Benjamí and Mauricio spent a few long nights building a test platform, and then recruited their most sensible friend Catlaltoa 'Cat' Canango as their business partner. His dad is founder and owner of Canango's, Tequilo's favourite fried lizard wing dining chain, so they figured Cat would know his way around a spreadsheet and a corporate tax return. With Cat on board they filed all the paperwork to secure intellectual property rights, trademarks, and company registrations - MiCF, The People's Club*, was born. Cat Canango designed a business plan built around subscription membership, and they set the target of 50,000 members with fully paid affordable subscriptions for two years to trigger the purchase of a football club in the Tequiloan state system third tier, or 3-Sección. Benjamí and Mauricio built a public-issue demonstration platform for the 'game' and launched the website micf.teq. Through his father and CEO of Canango's, Cat managed to engage serious marketing firm Densulene Dingarran Inc. to promote the project. Membership trickled along - 275 in the first month after launch, 800 in the second month, 1,250 in the third. But then DD Inc. managed to get a feature on Deportivo Cielo, the nation's big sports tv channel, and a concurrent feature in GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL-a!!! Daily - all hell broke loose. 8,000 sign-ups in three hours temporarily broke the website, and when it returned after a six-hour blackout and a lot of sweating from Benjamí and Mauricio, the sign-ups kept coming. The membership ticked over 20,000 in 24 hours, and they hit their target of 50,000 the next day. By the end of the week, they were sitting pretty at 72,000 members. The threshold for progression to Phase 2 had been reached. Next, a year of waiting while membership remained open and a forum was established to communicate and share ideas about how the club would be run, how the gameside would operate, who could help and how.

During the nexy year, more members trickled in, slowly bringing membership up to a whopping 96,000 armchair managers. The forum was, to say the least, a little spicy. That is a lot of e-gamers, fan-fanatics and virtual hooligans who had been shouting at each other across Twii.tur, ForumForRanting and WCDT who now had to work together. A whole team of moderators were employed at the MiCF head office in San Joaxha. Small keyboard wars broke out. Cliques developed. It was Discordant in the extreme. Pitxi-Pitxi 77 fans weren't working well with CFFA supporters. Moto ultras were annoying everyone. To divert attention - or tensions - away from the bear pit of the forum, and to keep everyone engaged through to the next milestone, Cat Cananga came up with the idea of an interactive MMPORG for members, and four months in Benjamí and Mauricio with a whole bunch of programmers and the head of development poached from the Máximo game, released the free members-only MiCF Fantasía. Buggy but quirky, it was received with affection by most of the MiCF community, and has built up to become a moderately successful cult game. Allegedly, Cat Cananga plans to release it to the wider world, as a paid platform, with profits forming additional sponsorship for the real club when it is eventually acquired by MiCF.

A few months ago, the first year membership renewal became due along with Phase 3 of MiCF: assuming the minimum threshold of 50,000 subscription renewals, the MiCF Directorate would begin the search and acquisition of the real club. Today, MiCF announced that from the total of 96,000 first year members, 74,000 had committed to renewal for year two - club acquisition is green-lit, and the organisation are looking for a club in the third tier of state championships, somewhere in Tequilo, to purchase and build.

"This could be big," says founder and computer nerd Mauricio Salgado, "this could be totally massive. Together, we can take a small club to the very top of Tequiloan football. The people will make the club, and the club unite the people. In ten years, we plan to be playing in the Champions League."

Hmm. We will watch this space - the cynics, and there are plenty of them, have reminded us that it's all very well modding your favourite Máximo team to beat up 1830 Cathair or Raynor City United in the Champions League Final, but doing it in the real has not proved a simple task at all, unless you happen to be from Brenecia or Nephara.

*A legal challenge for trademark infringement by the people's club, Cooperativa, still pending and notwithstanding.

CHAZAPA

The 77o made short order of successfully defending their state crown, extending their national record for the most state titles to 23 and securing an opportunity to defend their initial Liga-TQ title with relative ease. The highest points haul in all the 1-Seccíon state championships and the biggest margin to the next best team ensures the mighty green-and-whites go into the second Liga-TQ Primera as clear favourites. Behind them one-time powerhouse Pingüinos hope to rekindle some of their former glories and do reach the Proxima section for the season closura, whilst perhaps the biggest surprise in all of this year's state championships is the impressive finish of promoted Asociación Olaya, taking third place on the final day of the season to qualify for the closura themselves. Coach Lorenço Ruis has received great credit for a spectacular couple of seasons in charge at 'The Association' and with a number of top jobs becoming vacant at clubs not enjoying such success, Ruis will be mentioned as a serious contender just about anywhere. There are disappointing seasons once again for Jaguares, Cóndor and recent state champions Serpentina, while they failed to stop the rot at AS Tonalá - after narrowly avoiding relegation last season, there was no such luck this time around. They go down with Juniors who could not match their promoted colleagues at Olaya and slip straight back down to the second tier.

Cisne Senzapa win the 2-Sección for an instant return to the top flight, and they will be joined by play-off winners Cultúra, who had always considered themselves the superior team of the city of Calcazon, but have had to watch 'The Association' rise to the top of the state championship and even win a place in Liga-TQ; it must be hurting but next season they will have a chance to go head-to-head for bragging rights in the city.

There are two heavyweight promotions from the third tier with El Rinoceronte and Hipopótamo-Joaxha both charging through the division to win a place in 2-Sección next season - let's hope they don't come back down again with too much of a bump: that could be painful for anyone caught underneath them.*

LIFE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOTBALL FOOD CHAIN

Season 1

Somehow, against all the odds and all logic, Sardíneros had won promotion to the second tier of the Guastenango state championships. The amateurs from the small town of Chanco Cóndor were used to life at the very bottom of the third and prepared every season to potentially be relegated out of the state championships altogether, possibly never to return. Finishing second from bottom was considered a major success; finishing bottom was business as usual and finishing bottom and being forced to play - and win - a relegation play-off was an acceptable risk. Incredibly Sardíneros had won all five relegation play-offs, which are forced on a club after three consecutive bottom-place finishes, and were proud holders of the record for the most appearances in a relegation play-off without losing. That was as good as it got for CF Sardíneros de Chanco Cóndor, to give the team it's full and grand title.

And then everything changed.

Last season, the small group of amateur players pulling on the pink and silver shirts of Sardíneros managed some previously unthinkable feats to break all known records at the club. Some things had never even been recorded before but were considered to be recordbreakers because no-one could believe these were anything but first-time events. We all knew it was going to be a peculiar season when the first record fell - Sardíneros won not just the first, but also the second game of the season. They had never done that before. And the general conclusion from pub debates was that in at least one game, and possibly both, they had actually deserved it. Everyone was quite unsettled. Later that same season they would smash the club record for a winning streak by recording three in a row. Against struggling Huayna Colombino they got their all-time biggest victory with a 4-1 win. An unbeaten streak of seven was nearly double their previous best. Twice - twice! - they came from behind to win. Galez Encinas became the first player to score a hattrick for the club in that giant win over Los Binos. He scored the most goals in a season for the club and was the first to hit double figures with a whopping 11 goals to become an instant legend. In the Copa Tequilo they reached the third round, two more rounds than they had ever gone before, and beat Juniors Chazapa, then on their way to promotion to the top flight, 4-3 for their first ever win over a team from a higher tier. All in all, it was a crazy season. It concluded with utterly unexpected and confusing wins over Recreativo Cuara and then Helmántico in the post season to get promotion to the second tier, a place previously considered the stuff of legend and fantasy, like Nirvana, Heaven, or Andossa Se Mitrin Vega. This season coming, they will compete in 2-Sección for the first time, with no road map on how to navigate it. But that's alright. If they come last, they will at least be in familiar territory and heading back home to the basement.

"We haven't signed reinforcements," says club president and changing room decorator Xose Ron, whose other job is, well, painter and decorator, "our Facilities Manager Dolores has a line to Mosey Ackanard, so we managed to get in touch with him for a bit of guidance on transfer fees and wage expectations at this level. Smashing chap, very helpful. We won't be signing anyone."

Sardíneros don't have money to burn. They don't really have money to spend. At all. On anything.

Dolores, who has been with the club for thirty years, runs the laundry from her own home and collects soap powder from crowd donations every other Saturday with the refrain "Keep The Sardines Fresh, Every Little Helps" which she chimes from the static catering van where she provides hot snacks and drinks before, during and after matches. Punters get a free cup of tea in exchange for a cup of detergent. She's also responsible for starching the corner flags and various travelling jobs such as picking up the matchday programmes from the printers, restocking 'The Sardine Can' as they call her little food outlet, and picking up tins of paint for the Directors when it's time to spruce up the stadium a bit - all using public transport. She used to drive, and the static Sardine Can used to be a mobile burger van, until she lost her licence when her eyes failed and she ran into the back of the Polideportivo team bus one Saturday morning before a home match. When they found she was as blind as a cactus bat, they took away her licence and her other job driving the club's team minibus. She had occasionally been called upon to run the line as well - and the discovery explained an awful lot about her performances. The club made sure to keep that one quiet. Her lack of visual acuity has barely stopped her in her main role though, which is as the focal point for the team. She knows how to put an arm around a broken striker, how to ball out a lazy midfielder, and she knows every supporter by name - not that there are many of them - recognising them these days by the tone of their complaints. She's a surrogate granny for many of the club staff's children up to and including the President's children and grandchildren, and she even has her own column in the club's really rather paltry matchday programme, which these days she dictates to the club secretary. The articles are full of insight, tactical nous, great lessons for living life well and frugally, and a lot of almost unbelievable anecdotes. Including the time Mosey Ackanard turned her down in their youth in favour of his future wife Skela, despite her most forthright of advances.

"My life has been turned upside down since we started winning," says Dolores, with a tut and a shake of her head, "our crowds have doubled, we get nearly two hundred people for some matches and I have no idea who's who. Plus I have to lug all them extra programmes on the bus, not to mention more burgers, more beans, more chillis. Now they tell me I'll have to wash the kits on a hotter cycle to make sure they are really clean - I mean, I don't know what they are saying about my laundry but I've had no complaints before. I shouldn't grumble I suppose, we'll have some nice new opponents visiting and I don't doubt we'll be back to our losing ways soon enough."

Club President Xose Ron probably agrees, though he's not saying so. "Our aim for next season? Same as always - having enough money at the end of the weekend to pay the electricity bill. If I can pay for the lights and Dolores can keep the kits clean, we'll be alright," he says, aptly summing up life at the bottom of the football food chain. Although, for one season at least, not all the way down to the very bottom.

The shock of Ciupa Azul winning their first title for seventy-four years was entirely overshadowed by what happened at the foot of the table, where reigning champions Equipo Caimán avoided relegation on the last day of the season in an abysmal defence that cost not one but two managers their jobs, while Tequilo's oldest club, probably, SC Raití, burdened by money troubles and corruption charges, were relegated to the second tier of state football for the first time in the long and proud history. It was a disappointing campaign for Acacoyagua who were off the pace all season but they will look down at two giants from the city of Raití in SC and The Gators, and count their blessings they haven't had to go through that kind of torment. Equipo Caimán's experiment of appointing young foreign coach Christoffer Henjum did not pay off and he didn't make it to the midway point of the season before he was relegated back to the academy team from whence he came; while assistant to the previous two managers Fiodor Sion was promoted to rescue the season but fired with three games to go and the Gators sitting in the relegation slot. Interim replacement Uxio Melle did enough to haul them out of trouble and will wait to see what happens in the off-season as to whether he retains the job. Meanwhile across town at SC, the loss of ex-President billionaire Cecili Planelas' money was a crippling blow to morale, with wages being paid late and constant rumour about imminent closure; but a poor season in which they would've finished 9th became a disaster when an automatic 9-point deduction for irregularities had them scrambling for survival after 22 games - and with The Gators turn of form in the last three matches that scramble became a hopeless cause as La Abuela - The Grandmother of Tequiloan pitxi - succumbed to relegation on the final day of the season. But in happier news at the top, striker Narciso Cora had a renaissance season for Ciupa Azul and was unstoppable in front of goal to lead The Blues to that incredible first title in generations, their seventh overall, and put them into Liga-TQ with the most unlikely state title in living memory.

In the second tier fallen giants Tequiloa demonstrate to SC Raití what can be done when the world falls apart and you get relegated - bouncing back at the first attempt, albeit by the skin of their teeth through the play-offs behind Gimnástico who were also relegated the previous season and bounce straight back. At the bottom, Xose Ron and Dolores will take some comfort from Sardíneros immediate relegation to 3-Sección from the fact they didn't do nearly as badly as everyone predicted, finishing bottom with 27 points and that probably about 25 points more than most people would have expected. The city of Raití's generally miserable season was completed by Costello's relegation to the third tier, missing their chance to play SC next season in the league for the first time in their history.

MAKE MOTO GREAT AGAIN
THE INSIDE VIEW ON REHABILITATING A FALLEN GIANT

Season 1

When top Tequiloan satellite broadcaster Deportivo Cielo announced a new documentary series, provisionally titled 'Liga Dreams', they were only ever going to go to one club. A fly-on-the-wall series with an insider view of running a top football club for the first ever domestic season to feature a national league, the producers could've gone to Pitxi-Pitxi 77 or CF Frantxizko-A, the unrivalled two most successful and arguably biggest clubs in Tequilo, but they didn't. The 77o, a well run and controversy-free organisation, had plenty of on-field talent but off the pitch lacked what prurient media types might call the x-factor: boardroom battles, bigheads and barmy bullshysters with screen appeal. They were too professional to be watchable. At CFFA, who even knew? A clandestine gentlemen's club that was famously inaccessible to just about anyone else ran The Golds and there would be no getting any footage in there. Besides which, though it turned out rather well for eventual champions Pitxi-Pitxi, no-one was predicting that either club, in the middle of woeful slumps, would be producing the sparks of a title challenge that the show wanted to have going on as the backdrop to the behind-the-scenes documentary. Deportivo Cielo wanted a big personality, buckets of cash and a serious tilt at the title.

Enter flamboyant businessman Gedeó Dosrius, and his new plaything, Motozintla FC.

When you talk about x-factor, Señor Dosrius has it all. He's a comedian and a charmer, slick on the screen and a rather sexy silver fox. He's tempestuous and temperamental too, with spectacular tantrums. He's canny and wise, but he's got a mouth that runs away with him sometimes. His energy reserves are unrivalled, he never stops, a relentless business predator - he'll give you footage for hours and hours a week, just on his own, and you can also film everyone around him falling by the wayside as their endurance gives out. He plays the dangerous ball and racquet game of pelota (apparently to a very high level), he plays the piano, he sings with a crooning charm, and he paints fine originals at 4am. when there is no-one left standing to entertain him or be entertained by him. He's unpredictable, manic, and it is rumoured that he might have a serious personality disorder, so there is a more than a hint of danger if you want to follow him around with a camera and a mic into his more private moments. Above all, he has cash. Cash in spades. One of today's five wealthiest Tequiloa, the billionaire entreprenuer comes with a backstory to die for, though how much of it is precisely as recorded is open for debate. Found as an abandoned baby in the highlands of Bonesea - where that sort of thing happens a lot and they still can't explain why - he was brought to The Orphanage at Overgiven. DNA tests proved he was of Tequiloan origin. When he was two, he was stolen away by two older orphans and stowed on a ship bound for Tamarindia, and grew up on the streets of Misión. In his early teens he stowed away again and came to his homeland of Tequilo, where he started out as a 'dock-rat' in the port of Tapalupé. His boundless energy, incredible charm and cunning wit soon led him to establish profitable enterprises in and around the port, beginning with small, off-the-books services and growing quickly to become a shareholder in a boat in his late teens through to a shipping magnate by his early thirties. Now in his sixties, he sits at the top of a multiversal empire in transportation, telecommunications, entertainment, manufacture, agriculture and banking. And now, he has bought his own stake in the country's newest 'big business' - pitxi.

Motozintla was an obvious project for someone like Gedeó Dosrius; a strong brand, but a withered product in need of regeneration. One of the biggest clubs in Maranco state, and indeed the country, apart from a single title a decade ago, Moto had not been a regular challenger for nearly fifty years. Back then, they were one of the true greats of Tequiloan football, a giant in the country. But they had been trading on hot air and increasingly distant memories ever since. Señor Dosrius picked them up for almost nothing three years ago when talk of the national league had gotten solid traction and would soon be a reality - he wanted in on this new commercial opportunity, and he saw Moto as a future brand that could light up the league and leverage multiversal profiling if someone could pour vast reserves of cash and energy into the project. He had plenty of both. The declarations of intent came fast - "I'm going to make Moto great again" he said in his first interview and it has been the rallying cry ever since. Success was instant - Moto won the 120th state championship - their 13th - in his first season. His boasting was almost intolerable - and then he discovered the true challenge of football was not getting to the top, it was staying there. A poor title defense followed, and then a very drab mid-table finish in his third season. He was stung by mockery of his early bragging. But Gedeó Dosrius does not do failure. He accepts set backs as part of life, but when Gedeó Dosrius takes a set back, he returns stronger, harder and faster (I'm quoting straight from his autobiography here, in which he referred to himself throughout in the third person). After two bland seasons, he re-issued the rallying cry "Make Moto Great Again" and Deportivo Cielo jumped straight on his bandwagon with their documentary proposal. Señor Dosrius was never going to turn it down - it was a match made in heaven.

They filmed for a season, and at the end of last season, released the final product in a series of eight episodes tracking his progress. All the way through production, the project was known as 'Liga Dreams' but in fact the season was a flop on the pitch with Moto missing out on qualification to the brand new league, finishing fourth in the state championship behind deadly rivals Resplendiente. Liga Dreams was dropped as the working title, and instead the producers did a tie in deal to use Gedeó Dosrius' by now trademarked phrase 'Make Moto Great Again' - a smart move on Señor Dosrius part to add to the brand recognition of his club. The show was a huge success despite Moto's unremarkable season - Gedeó Dosrius himself more than making up for it as he gripped the nation with his larger-than-life personality. Ratings were huge. A second season of the show was instantly slated, and Señor Dosrius is delivering on a promise to spend big - breaking the domestic transfer record three times in one week with big star signings Zaquiel Goris, Mendo Davila and finally young national team keeper Oscar Bienvenida. Some have said he only signed them to make the next series of the show more interesting - but Moto fans won't mind, because they are sure to get their own more interesting season too, on the field. This could be a big year for Motozintla FC. And you can stay tuned, too, with the inside line - Make Moto Great Again is going to be screened on Deportivo Cielo synchronious with the season; once a month, an episode will update on progress.

Whether Gedeó Dosrius makes Moto great again - and the signs are certainly positive - what we can be sure of is that he will at least make great television again. The show is sure to be top of the ratings league, whatever Motozintla do.

Fans of fly-on-the-wall documentary series 'Make Moto Great Again' got a real treat in the second season as the state championship went right to the wire with Motozintla locked in a battle with Xicoa, aiming to claim an historic third straight title. But with a bunch of expensive new star signings and managed by the former national team coach Mauricio Nores, it was Moto who took the title with a goal-difference victory over the double-champions in what was a titanic clash. Motozintla's main rivals Resplendiente briefly challenged the pair but could not keep pace, ending the season in a distant third place to at least ensure a second season of Liga-TQ football although they will be mighty sick of all the fuss being made about their 'great' rivals. One thing they will hate to admit though is that billionaire owner Gedeó Dosrius has certainly made Moto very watchable, though there are flaws in this side to be ironed out. They will enter their first Liga-TQ with a shot at the national title, but in truth they do not yet look comparable to Pitxi-Pitxi 77 or CF Frantxizko-A, the big two set to slug it out for the national title. But who knows, with Señor Dosrius in the driving seat and coach Nores a sublime navigator, perhaps this will be their season. At the wrong end of the table Tumuloa, suffering from the loss of talismanic keeper Oscar Bienvenida to Moto, are relegated alongside last season's surprise 2-Sección winners 1492 Carranza.

In the second tier Alianza restore their place in next season's state championship, putting a dismal relegation behind them to bounce straight back as play-off winners, while Deportivo Torente dominated the division to take the automatic spot. That means a second season in the second tier for La Milega AC, as they lost out in the play-off final to Alianza. Farvedilos surprised everyone in following up a promotion from the third tier with a play-off spot, and who knows, perhaps the refugee club will push on to confirm what everyone in Tequilo already knows, that Farves are better at pitxi than the locals.

BUILDING A CLUB AS AN INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL EMPIRE

Season 1

The sale of Haïtiens to Grupo Taxhavn came out of the blue at the beginning of this season and had every journalist scrabbling to answer the million chélinpeso question - "who?"

The cult club from the capital city Tapalupé had just experienced a disastrous relegation to the second tier of state football, in a season where they began with every expectation of qualifying for the inaugural Liga-TQ. 'Los Brujos' - The Witchdoctors, or commonly The Wights - are the city's, and therefore one of the nation's, biggest clubs - in terms of support at least, although they have continuously failed to live up to their billing having won only four of 123 state championships and never having even reached a Copa finale. Bigger than 18-time state champion Fábrica, bigger than 9 time champions and stadium co-habitors Independiente, they are famed as much as anything for not winning much, although they are at least usually competitive. Their last title was 65 years ago but they have been second on eight occasions since then, so relegation was, even by Haïtiens disappointing standards, quite a low point. The club do have some international appeal too, and this surely was part of the reason why this surprising takeover happened - they have a sister club in Wight with the same name, with whom they shared an affiliation although they were entirely separate and independent business entities. I say 'were' because, well, they are not so separate any more. The first club owned and operated by Grupo Taxhavn was and is Haïtiens (WGT) - another popular club, they do wins things, quite regularly, in what has of course become an obscure and often ignored backwater league of very low standards. Haïtiens (TEQ) are very much the stronger partner in that relationship these days, although it wasn't the case 140 years ago. Back then the WGT version, a UICA competitor and Wightleague serial contender, sent a group of philanthropists (some might say cultural imperialists) to Tapalupé City to found an outpost team in the early days of 'pitxi' and thus was the TEQ version born. Though business relations were never formal, the affiliation remained through to modern times.

And then along came Grupo Taxhavn.

Finances in Wight are to say the least esoteric, byzantine, recondite, opaque, umbrageous, labyrinthine and orphic. Finances in Taxhavn are all those things with 'extremely' added as a prefix. Also 'wilfully' would work too. So it is impossible to say when Grupo Taxhavn were formed, who they really are, when they acquired Haïtiens (WGT) and who else they own without admitting to it. They may own the country of Wight. Or Wight may own them. Somewhere in there, above or below in the heirarchy we cannot tell, is another shadowy organisation, the Oroboros Cooperative, purportedly financiers of Tequilo's Ciudad de Pitxi national stadium complex, Bonesea's Fluid Time technology and possibly also the Fall of Tamarindia just over a century ago. It is enough to give the most able forensic accountant a breakdown. What we can know for certain is that Grupo Taxhavn - GT - bought Haïtiens here in the off-season, and appointed a Wightling, Rotho Nessenga as President and outgoing President of the former owners Mariella Cicerón as CEO of the new entity. For continuity, they say. Señor Nessenga has been rather coy - one might say elusive - in presenting plans for GT's new dominion, but Señora Cicerón, well known to the press in Tapalupé, was more than forthcoming on future plans, if not the details of the money behind it.

"GT have huge ambitions in World Football," she says, "and we are the first rung on the ladder. Haïtiens is one of the elder siblings in the football family we are building across the multiverse."

Family, you say? Apparently, this is only the beginning. Funded by some bottomless pit of [possibly] rinsed-clean cash, Grupo Taxhavn plan to have a club in every key region where football is developed. That means Rushmore, Esportiva, and probably even - dare we think it - Ao. GT do not have the natural aversion to that region common amongst the Tequiloa and their friends. They see only business. A network of clubs, a shared philosophy, and probably a pyramid of quality which Haïtiens hope they will sit near the top of, one day.

"First, we build this club," continues CEO Cicerón, "from the ground up - world class facilities, the best academy, Nichelim-starred staff canteen, you name it. We build a team to dominate Liga-TQ. We establish a feeder club further down the league to give opportunities for younger talents; we have a school of football excellence and we win things. We play in the IFCF. We win things there too. And we add clubs to the family, strategically, create a never-seen-before philosophy for taking care of business - on the pitch, and off it. This is the birth of a dynasty."

Well if you say so, Señora Cicerón. It sounds just about as madcap as that crazy billionaire at Motozintla. More money than sense?

"We would obviously dispute those implications, probably with a law suit, but what I can say is that certainly, Señor Dosrius is doing an inspirational job at Moto - but he is going to need competitors. We'll do things our way, and he will do things his. We look forward to the competition."

A new rivalry, based on cash reserves, is born. It almost sounds like a work of fiction, something cult comic star Rúi de Los Rovas would be playing through - Manchester City¹ vs. Manchester United² from the famous comic strip. But this time, in the real.

Los Indis took everyone by surprise to win their ninth state championship and first title in over a decade, just pipping reigning champions Pelotón to the title by a single point and consigning 'The Bikes' to the Proxima section of runner-up clubs in Liga-TQ. Independiencia are led by the exciting young brother-manager duo Armando and Aaron Garrido, who have impressed over the last two seasons as they build a dynamic team here at the Estadio Metrópoli in Tapalupé City, a ground they share with Haïtiens - who also had a good season. In fact, with 'Los Brujos' coming into a lot of money and threatening to tear up the leagues, it was an important season for Independiente to remind their noisy housemates who is in charge, at least at the moment. Heavyweights Argón finish third for a second consecutive season to ensure more closura football, while rivals and pretenders to the crown Fábrica once again had a disappointing season, finishing one place higher than last time in 5th but actually getting less points. By their usual high standards, this form surely constitutes at least a slump, if not a crisis - and coach Axel Cortés paid for it with his job as The Spanners look to improve things for the 18-time state champions. Yet to make their debut in Liga-TQ is considered an unmitigated disaster by the fans who two years ago were shouting about their team being the best in the country. It's all gone quiet over there. At the other end of the table Galaxía and Estudiantes, two sides who also consider themselves big teams with high expectations, had disastrous seasons to drop into 2-Sección, as Ocotapa State Championship was the only top flight this season in which both promoted clubs, Cuba Tapalupé and Tenís de Tacranza, held on to their top flight status, albeit with little to spare.

Most, if not all, eyes were on the second tier this season to see what would happen as a genuinely big club united with serious money to get themselves out of the division. Haïtiens, now underwritten by vast reserves of cash courtesy of Grupo Taxhavn, did manage to pull themselves back into the top flight at the first time of asking, but only with a narrow win over Nacionál SP in the play-off final. They'll take it though, joining 2-Sección champions Boca Cielo in promotion festivities and no doubt now plotting a course to the top of the state championship and a place in Liga-TQ.

PUEZAN

It has been a long time coming but the mighty CF Frantxizko-A finally pulled their socks up to win their 22nd state title, only one behind rivals Pitxi-Pitxi 77, to end a 16-year wait for the state championship - their longest ever run without winning the title. The Golds will compete in their first closura and go head-to-head with the 77o for the national title in what will surely be the most anticipated Splendído of all time. Their expected main competitors for the state win never showed up for the competition, with reigning champions Peru failing to cope with the pressures of a decent debut season in the IFCF international club competition and defending their state crown concurrently, slumping to a poor 7th placed finish, while Unuiĝinta had a miserable time at the bottom of the table, steering clear of relegation by a meagre 2 points and firing their manager in the process. FT Orazun surely won the 'most improved' award for the season as they stormed to second place in the state and very nearly overhauled CFFA for the title in the run-in, while Sporta Ibaeta replace their cross-town rivals Urbo in the final closura slot, also giving The Golds a run for their money in what was a really tight chase for the crown. At the bottom poor Dinamo, hailing from the same town as their illustrious neighbours CFFA, go down with the worst season across all state leagues, the record points low, thoroughly out of their depth and hoping to recover quickly from a bruising season.

The second tier provided two shocks with Urbo Polibio stunning everyone to win the division and set up a rare contest next season with their neighbours Polibio CF, while Demokrito won back to the top flight via the play-offs with wins over more fancied sides Erresistentzia and Atléta Reten. Meanwhile Atléta Idal and Batasuna, two sides who might consider themselves top flight material, continue to languish in mid table of the second tier. Talking of languishing, mention must be made of Nómada, one of Puezan's biggest clubs, who suffered two consecutive relegations from 1-Sección to 3 and this season finsihed closer to the bottom than the promotion spots in the third tier. It is a quite unbelievable mess they find themselves in and fans will surely be praying for a miracle like Haïtiens super-investors Grupo Taxhavn, or Moto's billionaire Gedeó Dosrius, otherwise they face disappearing to become the next Sardíneros.

The second season of the national youth league saw an expansion to two divisions, while Argón Tacranza prepared to defend their crown as first national youth champions, as well as participating in the IFCF Rising Stars Cup to test themselves against the best in the multiverse - a rather daunting prospect when you put it like that. They would be without four key players from their Liga-J winning season, all promoted to senior football - keeper Samuel Cedillo, attacking midfielder Juan Manuel Notario, and Liga-J player of the season Jacob Emade into the Argón senior squad and striker Hugo Rabellino heading out on loan to El Quetan CF.

Whilst Argón made a good fist of defending their title, they ultimately came up short as the impressive 'Young Crows' team of Resplendiente signalled a potential bright future for the Silver & Black. It was a no-nonsense season built on an impressive back three of Slíssá Yaà, Jaume Monroig and Conradí Peracaul, with keeper Sebastià Barrull behind them and defensive midfielder Chanko Sitjes in front proving a hard unit to beat. Whilst Argón certainly missed their three big players who moved up to the seniors, Liga-J player of the season Firmino Vale continued to impress both for club and country, and surely now will get his place in the senior team. At the bottom of the division, two teams whose seniors also had disappointing seasons - Unuiĝinta & Fábrica Tapalupé both get relegated to the second tier to complete unhappy seasons all round for their respective clubs.

Argón Tacranza Abroad - The Rising Stars Cup

It was something of a chastening experience for the boys from Argón in their first IFCF competition, exiting in the champions path first round; but that doesn't tell the whole story, as they travelled to Siovanija and Teusland for a tough tie against FC Teussen Stelburg; in a country where youth football is at an excitingly high level, Teussen's rivals FC Felsenkirchen 1879 went on to win the tournament, and the results for Argón were hardly a disgrace; after an impressive home draw, a two-goal defeat in Tuesland sent them out but assured that they had been competitive against a far superior team.

Next season the pressure will be on Resplendiente to better Argón's record, a place at least in the second round the minimum requirement according to academy officials.

Liga-J2

The inaugural season of the second tier of youth football included four teams relegated from the previous season in Atlás, Pedregal, Moto and Pitxi-Pitxi 19, along with ten additional teams largely selected based on the performances of their senior clubs in the league last season. A fourteen team division will reduce to ten next time around with the four bottom sides dropping into the third tier.

A thoroughly dominant season from Atlás saw them return to the top tier of youth football with records that will be hard to match. Finishing twenty points clear and with only one defeat all season, their young defensive midfield foreign import Tinni Grímólfursson, given his one year apprenticeship in the under-20s after signing from Steinaux youth in Græntfjall, was unstoppable and looks more than ready to step up to the seniors. Defender Narziso Roca and midfielder Amatu Larregain are also expected to graduate this season after impressing in what was, at the end of the day, something of a one-team parade - and that team was not Pitxi-Pitxi 19, children of the mighty 77o, who have a long way to go to match their elders.

Six additional academies will join the third tier of Liga-J for season 3 to create three tiers of ten teams; 23 applications are being considered from Juventoyan, Humberto & Atlético Lipa (Antivador); Pingüinos & Jaguar Ixtacomitán (Chazapa); Índigo Huayna, Inter Raití, El Quetan CF & Tequiloa (Guastenango); Universitario, Las Guías Oriente, Fortuna Tulan & Alianza Tirinto (Maranco); Independiencia, Cuba Tapalupé, Ténis de Tacranza, Estudiantes Tacranza, & Haïtiens (Ocotapa); Sporta Ibaeta, KKA Bixintxo, Telmo-Léao, Polibio & Nómada (Puezan).

In light of the interest, restructuring is being considered for seasons 4 or 5 to include more teams with a regionalised competition below first or second tiers - consultations are now being conducted with clubs for potential three regional conferences - Occidente, Centrale & Oriente which will feed into an upper division of national scope.

INTERCONTINENTAL FOOTBALL

AS Tequiloan clubs entered intercontinental football competitions for the first time, nobody expected anything more than a battering, from pillar to post. It is encouraging to think, after the positive entry of the national team into multiversal football, that the clubs have followed in the same vein - not setting the world alight, but showing early signs of competitiveness and in some instances, really impressing. Of the eight clubs that entered various competitions across the world, seven of them won through at least one round of matches with only El Quetan in the Cup Winners Cup drawing a complete blank when coming up against Krytenian stalwarts Ousevale Borough. And even then, there was no disgrace.

Timing of the competitions run in parallel with the domestic pitxi season, with various preliminary rounds occuring at the same time as the first half of the state championships; group stages in IFCF and FFI at the same time as the second half of state championships; and the final knockout rounds running in tandem with the Liga-TQ 'closura' at the end of the domestic season. Despite respectable results almost all across the board, only one team made the group stages of IFCF competitions, with Telmo-Léao in the Liga-B Champions Trophy, while all three FFI entrants made the group stages their and champions Pitxi-Pitxi 77 were the first, and so far only, Tequiloan club to progress into the final knockout stages with an incredible - and surprising - run in the Liga dos Vencedores.

In a remarkable debut season for Pitxi-Pitxi 77, the squad was everything as The 77o played an incredible 22 games in intercontinental football, starting their run in the Champions League Extra Preliminary Round way back early in the Tequiloan summer month of Dorado, and finishing a deep run into the LdV in the late spring of Pastura the next year. A tough start saw them ease past Nationale Jovannica on away goals after two draws in the CL Extrapreliminary, picking up their first win at Newville SC in Unified Lugandia in the next stage before exiting at the second preliminary round to Crystal Fair HC without managing a home win in their three games. Nevertheless, it was a respectable start to life in the Wide Enness Ocean, a 1-3-2 record at their first attempt before dropping into the Challengers Cup at the Third Preliminary Round Stage.

Three clubs entered the Challengers Cup at different stages, with Pitxi-Pitxi joining them later on after elimination from the Champions League - and it was oh-so-near for surprise package Peru Urzagui, who followed up their impressive Liga-TQ debut season by almost making the group phase. But at each stage up to that, one of our teams got a result - Pelotón with the nations first club home win in IFCF competition beating Capitals Javoser in the extra preliminary round; and then Real Gardaresso and Peru joining in the first preliminary where Pelotón fell to Poafmersians Bikarish. Real dispatched Hinodejin's CosmoStars while Peru eased through on penalties after a tough tie agaonst Lisando Club Sparta. Real dropped out in the next round to Bakeroos Southend AC but Peru got the plum draw and stunned everyone, including themselves, by eliminating one of the giants of intercontinental football in AS Bezieres, first with an unlikely 0-0 draw in Valladares, and then a famous 3-1 win at a raucous El Saga stadium, in Urzagui. It is a night that will live long in the memory and will go down as an instant classic. In the third preliminary round, Pitxi-Pitxi entered after dropping out of the Champions League but fell to defeat to Filindos Venividicci, although they did get their long-awaited first home win with a 2-1 victory, going out 2-3 on aggregate. Meanwhile Los Peruanos marched on, with aggregate wins over Olastaryn FC and Canbix Muses taking them to the Qualifying Round and the brink of the group stages. Coming up against Savojarños Lokomotive Jarnstad, a narrow defeat in Savojarna provided plenty of hope but it was heartbreak at El Saga despite another impressive win, as Peru went out on away goals to end Tequiloan interest in the main IFCF competitions. But hope springs eternal - in the Liga B competition...

Once again there were victories for all three Tequiloan entrants at different stages of the qualification rounds, and saw the first Tequiloan club reach a group stage as Telmo-Léao of Puezan surprised everyone with the way they eased into this competition. Ocozoxhuatla were the first entrant at the extra preliminary round where they eased past Squiddish side Club Factoria, before being eliminated in the next stage to Nepharans Brookford Otters. Asociación Olaya were next, getting an impressive passage past Krytenians Adanac City and the Wushan Stars before elimination in the third preliminary round. Telmo-Léao, 'El Telegrafo', started their journey at this point, picking up the baton with a double win over much-fancied Pasargans, Myrtha Dalin, then edging out Sunburbia FC of Eastfield Lodge to qualify, gloriously, for the knockout phase as the last Tequiloan interest in IFCF competition. Group football proved a step too great however, with El Telegrafo finishing bottom of the group though they proved no pushovers.

With their squad decimated during the offseason, and early struggles in the state championship, cup winners EL Quetan CF were on a hiding to nothing in the Cup Winners Cup, especially when they pulled Krytenians Ousevale Borough out the bag for their Preliminary Round tie. Two defeats left El Tano with the unenviable record of being the only Tequiloan side not to progress at least one stage in IFCF competition and indeed the only one not to win a match. But though they were outplayed by far superior opponents in both legs, they were not disgraced and ought to take away some plus points from their short time in intercontinental competition. What those plus points are, we will leave up to team manager Quriwayra to interpret.

Whislt finding the going tough in IFCF competition as was to be expected, Pitxi-Pitxi 77 had a quite remarkable debut in the FFI Liga dos Vencedores, extending all the way to the semi-final for a memorable adventure. Peru Urzagui, balancing the demands of state championship football with a good early run in the IFCF Challengers Cup, also impressed to reach the group stages, but failed to win a game in their six ties and were eliminated bottom of the group. The 77o, meanwhile, after a famous 4-0 thumping of Fleftic heavyweights Locomotive Imgortur, won through a tight group in second place to become the first and so far only team to see final stage knockout football - and then seemed to warm to that quite nicely, beginning with an 8-1 aggregate trouncing of Fujaians Solbakken IL. Through the luck of the draw a four match-residency of Bondstad in The Sarian ensued, first with the surprise elimination of Bondstad Treason in the quarterfinals to reach a wholly unexpected semi-final and a match up with 'the other Bondstad' - CF. Fortune was not quite so kind this time around, following a disastrous 0-3 home whipping, and while the team rallied to draw in The Sarian, their time was done and the last standing intercontinental competitor was finally out, after 22 games and some incredible football.

Completing the first tour of the world for Tequiloan football clubs, Real Gardaresso did not disappoint in their FFI bow, reaching the Taça group stage after a narrow win in Springmont over Basilsome Athletic FC in the qualifying round, an aggregate victory that consigned El Quetan CF to being the only team that did not win at least one round of intercontinental matches. In a tight group, Real finished bottom but took a victory home and away to at least remain competitive through to the end.

COPA SEASON 124

El Gran Gallo, The Grand Old Father [Lit: Cockerel; Collq: progenitor, father] of Tequiloan football and national knockout cup competition, the Copa Tequilo is one of the oldest competitions in the Costelloan diaspora, and possibly The Wide Enness Ocean: having surpassed 120 years of organised pitxi, the Copa is at least very old, by Yuman standards. Not only is the Grand Old Father truly ancient, it is extremely difficult to win - with over 600 teams taking part over a two-season cycle, no one team has been truly dominant. The mighty CF Frantxizko-A, commonly CFFA or Los Oros, The Golds, have won the most titles - a meagre six in almost a century and a quarter of competition.

A preliminary competition, La Copa Del Pueblo or commonly Copa Pueblo - The People's Cup - runs every season, providing a stepping stone to the Copa Tequilo the following season. Running strictly for the 4-Sección amateur tiers, the Copa Peublo does proceed all the way to a final and provides for an overall winner, but perhaps more importantly, the final sixteen teams of the Copa Peublo automatically qualify for the following season's Copa Tequilo. Beginning with an extra preliminary round to reduce the field from 16 to 10 from the Copa Peublo, the Copa Tequilo includes the lowest ranked 3-Sección semi-pro teams joining in the preliminary round; the majority of 3-Sección starting the first round proper; 2-Sección joining in the second round; and the top flight 1-Sección teams joining in the fourth round. There are a further five rounds leading to the final, known as El Gallo Dorado, The Golden Cock, which is so enthusiastically anticipated and so widely followed in Tequilo that it falls on a national holiday all of its own.

COPA TEQUILO - EARLY ROUNDS

Fourth, third and second tier sides fight through four rounds of matches in the hope of a plum fourth round tie against one of the top teams, and for our focus team Sardíneros they enter at a stage which has proved their glass ceiling over the years - the second round. Xose Ron & Dolores would've hoped for a single win to propel them beyond where they have ever been before - but it wasn't to be, crashing out on penalties after a creditable 0-0 draw with Flamencos. Meanwhile Mosey Ackanard's Mejillones Lipa get two hard fought victories to put them in the draw for the fourth round, and I'm sure he'll be secretly hoping for Socrates to come out of the bag and a visit to the club where he made his name as a player. Grupo Taxhavn's new project Haïtiens, unused to having to play so soon in the Copa, complete two modest home wins to ensure they get to the fourth round and a chance to remind themselves of what they are missing this season having dropped into the second tier. A good start in the state championship 2-Sección suggests they will be straight back, but here is a chance to prove themselves in short order.

COPA TEQUILO - LATTER ROUNDS

It's the fourth round proper and time for the big boys to get involved - a number of smaller teams will be looking forward to testing themselves against the giants; but one game stands out as the tie of the round as Pitxi-Pitxi 77 are drawn at home to Resplendiente - that's at least one of the Big Ten guaranteed to fall at the first hurdle.

The round provided the usual stunners, in particular Juventoyan falling to second tier Antivadorio neighbours Comuna Cailon, who had a great season in the state league 2-Sección to finish runner up, but missing out with a play-off defeat. However they were rampant against their famous neighbours and only a late fightback from Juve made the score a more respectable 4-3 - Comuna held a 4-0 lead with fifteen minutes to go. Juven's fiercest rivals Florentino also fell to a second tier club, losing 1-0 in Guastenango to JS Solistahuacan. Holders El Quetan CF needed extra time to dispatch Espinaquer while Peru edged through on penalties at Orden; Motozintla edged past Cimarrones but Fábrica Tapalupé join Florentino as Big Ten sides eliminated with a disappointing home defeat to Macarada Gaona - and Resplendiente are the third as they bow out to the 77o on penalties.

Haïtiens hopes of impressing under new management ended with a 2-1 defeat at Cóndor Sezalco, but cheeky chappy Mosey Ackanard got his charges through to the fifth round, The Mussels putting out Sardíneros' conquerors Flamenco to set up a home tie with big Puezani contenders Sporta Ibaeta - "It'll be a tough one," says Mosey, "and I'm going to ask the chairman to think about signing another striker to give us a fighting chance."

FIFTH ROUND
In the big tie of the round, two of the clubs that enjoy this competition more than most went head to head with CF Frantxizko-A drawn at home to El Quetan CF, and though the visitors are not having the best of seasons, they shock The Golds with an impressive 4-2 win - is a rare cup title defence on the cards? In the other big game of the round, Atlás put out Motozintla in another thriller, eventually triumphing 3-2 in a ding-dong battle; Real Gardaresso are beaten at Continente Tulan in an all-Antivador cálculo and SC Pedregal are on the wrong side of a 5-goal thriller at Rebelión Hernandados, reducing the pool of Big Ten competitors to four - Argón, the 77o, Atlás and Acacoyagua who needed a penalty win at home to Alianza Tirinto. Comuna Cailon, who stunned Juventoyan in the last round, pulled off another shock with a 1-0 home win over Polo Sur, but Mosey Ackanard's Mejillones Lipa could not match them, going out at home to top flight Sporta Ibaeta.

SIXTH ROUND
The big matches come thick and fast at the sharp end of the competition and in the sixth round probably the biggest was Inter Raití's tight match with Argón, and the home side prevail with an extra time win to put out another Big Ten side. Only three stand: Atlás, Pitxi-Pitxi 77 and Acacoyagua all navigate narrow victories over fellow top flight sides, while Peru Urzagui, impressive in the IFCF but having a nightmare in the State Championships, are enjoying the distraction of the Copa. A 3-0 victory over Siete Onze Espato gives them the feel of contenders; meanwhile Inter's disaster-struck housemates SC Raití continue to defy the odds as they press on with another cup win. Giant killers Comuna Cailon make it three in a row with another big shock, eliminating Humberto on their own ground with a 3-1 win and really grabbing the attention of the nation with a famous cup run. They draw SC Raití next and must be fancying their chances.

It's the minnows who grab the headlines in the seventh round as Comuna do it again, their fourth win over a top flight side as they eliminate SC Raití to set up an away tie at Acacoyagua, who put out SC's groundsharers Inter. Pitxi-Pitxi 77 remain with Acaco as the two Big Ten representatives, the 77o having eliminated Atlás on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time. Peru's luck finally runs out and leaves their season in tatters after such promise last year.

QUARTERFINALS
The last of the lower tier teams out as Comuna Cailon finally fall, losing 2-0 to Acacoyagua with the whole nation rooting for them. It has been a glorious run to combine with an exciting league season, and they will hope to build on it next time if they can keep the personnel who have attracted quite a bit of attention in this run. Acaco are the last standing Big Ten team as Pitxi-Pitxi 77 are beaten at home by Urbo Ibaeta - another failure for the team who are just about unbeatable in domestic football, except when it comes to this competition. Jaguar need penalties to get past Polibio but now they are in the semi-finals they will remind everyone of course that they could move clear into second place on the all-time list behind CFFA with a cup win. Fortuna Tulan join them in the semis after dispatching Intramura - on their best ever cup run - and as the team with the joint most cup final defeats (5, along with Sporta Ibaeta) will be the team the other three hope to get in the final.

SEMIFINALS
Jaguar Ixtacomitán put one step in the final with a solid win in Ibaeta and followed that with solid game management to secure a tie and a shot at a fifth cup final win, which will place them one behind CF Frantxizko-A in the historical file. They will come up against another formidable Copa team though in Acacoyagua, who needed extra time in their second leg against Fortuna to secure their spot. Acaco have three cup wins to Jaguar's four, including a rare two-in-a-row; they also remain the only team to have appeared in three consecutive finals.

LIGA-TQ PRIMERA
IT'S ALL ABOUT EL SPLENDÍDO, ISN'T IT?

Most commentators are not looking past Pitxi-Pitxi 77 vs. CF Frantxizko-A, El Spléndido, as the decider for the national title this season. It's the logical choice between the nation's two biggest and most successful clubs, but it does leave out one vital fact that might give other competitors a hope - and yes, there are other competitors. The absolute truth is that CFFA aren't good enough to win this. Yes, they are back. Yes, they won their 22nd state title. But Moto, Independiencia, and Florentino will all feel they have the beating of The Golds (sorry Azules, nobody is giving you much of a chance here). The better question might be, can anyone stop the 77o. It seems unlikely. Right now, they look streets ahead of everyone else.

The 77o made short order of successfully defending their state crown, extending their national record for the most state titles to 22 and securing an opportunity to defend their initial Liga-TQ title with relative ease. The highest points haul in all the 1-Seccíon state championships and the biggest margin to the next best team ensures the mighty green-and-whites go into the second Liga-TQ Primera as clear favourites. Internationals Chicchan, Xecoto, Cio Çenturion, Ixtub Tün, Tlacolotl... that is the spine of a team that will dominate this division all day long. Let us not forget madcap Wightling goalkeeper Orm Hinisser, perhaps the best in the league this season, Nepharo midfielder Con Hatzileftheriou the perfect captain, and another tyoung foreign import Çè Êf, on the left wing, adding the Farvmagic that every champion needs. They seem a class apart, overall.

But let's not hand the 77o the title just yet - what about the competition?

Despite a difficult pre-season which saw them lose key players Xaime Medal and Martí Calderon to the Audiolav poaching/scouting system, and huge fan unrest directed mainly at the board of directors, Los Violetas stunned Antivadorios everywhere by dominating the state championship from start to finish, ensuring their first state title in seven years and taking them back to the top of the all-time list for the islands. Florentino head into Liga-TQ for the first time and will be much fancied for the national title based on their performances so far, though no-one would've guessed coming into this season. Behind the 77o, they have the biggest points haul of the six and the best defence. Central to that has been magnificent centre-half Antton Machinena, with many calling for him to receive international recognition, and alongside him one of this season's most successful 'Cosmopolitas' signings - Bonesman Scredda Smith arriving from Orga City in Mercedini and filling the rightback slot; Machinena and Smith together have formed a wonderful partnership.

Independiencia took everyone by surprise to win their ninth Ocotapa state championship and first title in over a decade, just pipping reigning champions Pelotón to the title by a single point and consigning 'The Bikes' to the Proxima section of runner-up clubs in Liga-TQ. Independiente are led by the exciting young brother-manager duo Armando and Aaron Garrido, who have impressed over the last two seasons as they build a dynamic team here at the Estadio Metrópoli in Tapalupé City, a ground they share with Haïtiens - who also had a good season. In fact, with 'Los Brujos' coming into a lot of money and threatening to tear up the leagues, it was an important season for Independiente to remind their noisy housemates who is in charge, at least at the moment. Defender Gustavo Cotilla and box-to-box midfielder Jose Tassis have really impressed in this emerging team that will want to prove this is not a one-off but the start of something beautiful.

Making Moto Great Again has got some momentum behind it now and billionaire owner Gedeó Dosrius has certainly made Moto very watchable, though there are flaws in this side to be ironed out. They will enter their first Liga-TQ with a shot at the national title, but in truth they do not yet look comparable to Pitxi-Pitxi 77 or the other two set to slug it out for the Primera - Florentino or Los Indis. That said, with a bunch of expensive new star signings and managed by the former national team coach Mauricio Nores, it was Moto who took the Maranco state title with a goal-difference victory over outgoing double-champions Xicoa in what was a titanic clash. They have shown their mettle, and who knows, with Señor Dosrius in the driving seat and coach Nores a sublime navigator, perhaps this will be their season. Look to multi-million chelínpeso signings Oscar Bienvenida, Zaquiel Goris and Mendo Davila to lead their challenge, but it may be too much too soon.

Can The Golds ride the crest of expectation to actually compete with the 77o?

It has been a long time coming but the mighty CF Frantxizko-A finally pulled their socks up to win their 22nd state title, only one behind rivals Pitxi-Pitxi 77, to end a 16-year wait for the state championship - their longest ever run without winning the title. The Golds will compete in their first closura and go head-to-head with the 77o for the national title in what will surely be the most anticipated Splendído of all time. This alone might lift them beyond the numbers they have on paper, which don't match their rivals at this time. But Cálculos (that's grudge matches to you and me) do tend to even things up a bit, and never has the Splendido had so much riding on it. What this team do have as an advantage over others is time - this is a young team, and while that won't satisfy most CFFA ultras by telling them 'one day, but not this day' certainly there is plenty to look forward to. Young internationals Alexandro Calvoecheaga, Ostando Bertendona and Nuno Inchasti are three at least who have great futures ahead of them - and everyone in Tequilo knows Reçu youngster Rémy Lussier, on his day, can pull the strings for The Golds. And of course, they've brought a Farv with them: Mâártën Âllámbâlár has been brilliant this season. Okay then, maybe they can challenge.

Wait a minute, aren't there six teams in the Liga-TQ Primera?

Oh yes, I forgot. National team striker and cult favourite Roxelio Toran had a renaissance season for Ciupa Azul and was unstoppable in front of goal to lead The Blues to that incredible first title in generations, their seventh overall, and put them into Liga-TQ with the most unlikely state title in living memory. Their last one was 74 years ago. But they aren't going to pull any shocks this time, unless they can sneak fifth and the potential trip to the Vilitan Cove. Veteran striker Xoán Andrade and young midfield prospect Alexandre de Tobar are always easy on the eye, but this whole team will likely be left in the rear view mirror and are probably planning to enjoy a nice bottle of wine after each game as a consolation prize for getting this far.

Can anyone topple the 77o? Perhaps Florentino. As an outside bet, Independiencia. For the emotional ones, CFFA could perform a miracle and Moto would be a shock. Can it be done? Anything is possible, as they say in Tequilo, as long as you have enough piyacoque for the trip. Which really means no... no it can't.

SECOND SIX GETTING NOISY

All season there were rumblings. But no-one knew who was going to qualify for the Proxima division until it was all over - and then the second six, made up of the six second placers, started getting noisy about the IFCF and the Liga-B Champions Trophy. They might even get a bit litigious... and we're all hoping the IFCF themselves don't hear of it and decide to throw us all out for breaking some complex rules we haven't read properly. The issue comes from selection policy for the second tier competition - the UPT (that's the Tequiloan FA to you and me) send the top sides from the Liga-TQ Eliminatorio, made up of the teams that win the second tiers of the State Championships. But it is the contention of Juventoyan, SC Pedregal and Pelotón, among others, that as the representatives for the Champions League and Challengers Cup are selected from the outcome of Liga-TQ Primera, then selection for the B Champions Trophy should be from the Liga-TQ second tier, the Proxima... not the State second tier, which effectively feeds the Eliminatorio as the fourth tier of Liga TQ. These boys want their slice of the IFCF pie and you have to concede they have a point. Everyone is running around Pitxi Plaza (the short name for the UPT HQ) trying to work out who could get sued and what the Federation might say if they figure this out. So even as we head into the Liga, there is still no clear decision on where the qualifiers will come from - and of course, the Eliminatorio teams are banging their own drum on the matter. Ssssh, Eliminatorio teams! You might wake the Feds!

In purely football terms this is an interesting grouping, with Xicoa probably the favourites to win after so narrowly missing out - on goal difference - to Moto in the Maranco state championship. They, like Pelotón, will be disappointed to have missed out on the Primera after making their Liga-TQ debut there last season. Juventoyan will just be relieved to have made it to the closura at all after missing out last time and pressing the UPT for more spaces in the competition, given they are in perhaps the most competitive state right now with five or six clubs competing for three slots. SC Pedregal return for the second time to the Proxima, Pingüinos like Juventoyan are here for their closura debut, as are surprise package FT Orazun, Puezan state runners-up and enjoying what is likely to be a rare day out for them.

LIGA-TQ PEQUEÑA
ALSO-RANS IN IT FOR THE MONEY

What is the point of the Pequeña? You can't win anything, and the best position you can achieve for the record books is 13th. No-one remembers the thirteenth item on a list. There isn't a legal challenge in the world that is going to bring an IFCF berth, and there are no prizes for coming thirteenth. Except in Liga-TQ, there are. Cash prizes. When you get into the Pequeña, it's all about the money. I mean, to some extent it is in the Primera and the Proxima, and of course the whole Liga-TQ is football's attempt to print money - but while there is also glory to be had higher up the ladder, down here it's just get as many notes in the bank as possible: the higher you finish, the bigger your bonus.

Like last season, the Pequeña has some real big teams who are locked into a low Liga-TQ finish, another bone of contention. Real Gardaresso, Resplendiente and Argón will all feel they should be coming into the closura with a chance for honours - especially Real who look like they won't be getting IFCF football at all next season aftre enjoying their day in the sun this time around. Índigo Huayna too could feel like they might do better, but for them, it is a case of a star on the rise: this could be the start of something, and don't be surprised to see them compete for 13th here - they look solid and could be a challenger next season. For Sporta it's a bit of a relief to get a place in Liga-TQ at all after missing out last year, while Asociación Olaya, promoted last season from the second tier of state football, will just be thriving in their new stock as a decent team. They should be nowhere near the closura this season, and yet here they are, a beacon of hope for all promoted sides who start the season favourites to go straight back down again.

BUT IS IT THOUGH?

The Eliminatorio sides are in a straight fight with the Proximo sides for the right to play in IFCF competition next season and they won't the war of words that's emerging. In Atlético, Cisne and Gimnástico at least, they are three decent sides who shouldn't even be playing at this level - in their own opinion of themselves, anyway - and the very least the UPT can do is award them their places in the Liga B Champions Trophy. Whatever happens they will have to earn it and you can't look much past those three to take the top slots, with Atlético the clear favourites.

Three solid home wins in the first game won't tell us much about how this will all pan out, but certainly Moto will be disappointed to have come away with nothing at The Golds, in a match where they would probably have targeted all three points. Florentino look ominously good in their win over Independiencia, who like Moto would likely have been looking for some kind of result in Antivador. Talking of ominous - the 77o could and perhaps should have had more in a comfortable win over outsiders Ciupa Azul.

The first round of El Splendído was what everyone was waiting for and had TV viewing figures comparable to the Copa Tequilo final, El Gallo Dorado. And first blood goes, not unexpectedly, to Pitxi-Pitxi 77 with a rampant 3-1 win, Tlacolotl hitting a brace and getting the player-of-the-match award as the 77o go clear at the top after two games and look hard to catch already. Moto will be disappointed to have been held at home to Las Violetas, although in truth they were the ones hanging on, while Independiencia are beaten again at the Azules, who will be very happy to get points on the board.

It is a round of surprises as Azules stun CFFA in Iragartze, while Florentino go top after an impressive win over the 77o. That was probably crucial to keep this competition alive, and it sends a reminder to the green-and-whites that this is a competition after all. Los Indis and Moto share a draw which means that both languish without a win so far. Disappointing, especially for Motozintla.

Independiencia get their first win at the expense of CFFA, who, without victory since the opening day, must now see the national title is not coming their way, unless they can turn this around in spectacular fashion.

Moto's win over CFFA looks like three points in the battle for the basement, and provides a welcome first win for them. The Indis are languishing down near the bottom but look the better prospect over Moto and CFFA - if they can turn these draws into wins they will be booking holidays for intercontinetal football next season. The 77o are held in Iragartze by The Golds, who at least preserve a little pride in not being beaten twice in one season by their great rivals. Florentino fail to take advantage of that draw, as they cannot overcome a resilient Motozintla, and the wheels look like they are falling off the Azules surprising campaign with their third consecutive defeat at Independiencia. The big games come thick and fast now as what looks like it could be a six point game coming up in Antivador between Florentino and Pitxi-Pitxi 77.

Deadlock at the Estadio '77o in Ixta-Comitán as Florentino battle to a 2-2 draw with host Pitxi-Pitxi 77. Las Violetas remain one point clear of the 77o with two games remaining, and it looks like this one is going to the wire. With Ciupa Azul and CFFA deadlocked, Motozintla's revival surely gives them the advantage in the battle for Challengers Cup places, following an impressive home win over Independiencia. Moto seem to have found their mojo just at the right moment; now to keep calm and nail the final two games - it won't be easy, finishing with a trip to the Estadio '77o.

Could the Golds have done the unthinkable and delivered the title to the 77o? Meanwhile Moto's great revival continues with the biggest win of the competition so far, thrashing Ciupa Azul 5-0 to put them right in contention for an IFCF place. Which is handy because it's the reigning champions next, away from home, and they are looking for their second consecutive title.

SECOND BEST OR SECOND TIER?

The UPT - the Tequiloan FA to you and me - finally ruled against the motion by Juventoyan et al. to have the Liga-B Champions Trophy places awarded to the Proxima, determining that the Proxima and Pequeña are indeed part of the top flight, sectioned into merit brackets, whilst the Eliminatorio represents the second tier of Liga-TQ. It could have gotten very messy with appeals and counter-demands, but the clubs went away quietly, partly because they did not want to attract the attention of the IFCF in an unseemly spat, but also because the UPT have agreed to bringing forward a major restructuring plan which will come into force for season 4, with some serious shuffling at the end of next season. Plans have not been made public yet but it was enough to shut Juven up, whatever it was. Rumour has it that it will be incredibly complicated and have fans reaching for their calculators and slide-rules; not to mention fixture planners and humble reporters like myself.

Whatever the outcome, ironically, Juventoyan wouldn't have qualified anyway after a disappointing first appearance in the closura ends with a fourth place in the group and tenth overall, despite being favourites coming into the competition. Last season's Primera clubs Pelotón and Xicoa also failed to impress, and the group title came down to a straight fight between The Whistlers and The Penguins - SC Pedregal's 2-0 home win over Pingüinos on matchday 9 sealing the deal for them.

As with last season, four of the best teams in the country found themselves in the Pequeña chasing an unremarkable thirteenth place, and Resplendiente go one better than last time to take the top spot in the group. Real Gardaresso, third overall last time and enjoying runs in the Challengers Cup and the IFF Taça, will miss out next time around as they finish 14th overall. Argón also appear in the Pequeña for the third time, and like The Crows, improve by one position into fourth, and sixteenth overall.

Probably for the final time, Liga-TQ Eliminatorio decides the three teams from the second tier of state football who will be competing in IFCF competition, and as expected, it is the three bigger teams who make it with Atlético and Gimnástico in a two horse race for the Liga-TQ2 title; and it all comes down to the final round and the deciding match in Lipa. It is all one-way traffic in the winner takes all though, the home side winning comfortably 3-0 as Atlético succeed Telmo-Léao as TQ2 champions. Cisne Senzapa take the third slot unconvincingly on goal difference with a final day 3-2 win at Deportivo.

Ever in the shadow of their city rivals Pixti-Pitxi 77, Jaguares nevertheless are making this competition their speciality as they moved to within one title of equalling CFFA for the most Copa wins, taking their fifth title in what was a cagey affair notable for a raft of solid defensive displays on both sides and not much to watch from an attacking point of view. With five internationals across both teams all from a defensive or goalkeeping position, the class was always going to be at the back and indeed it was the youngest of them in under-18 international Daví Ceret who had the best game to win player of the match ahead of his goalscoring team-mate Narcís Metzli-Abadía. Playing alongside a fine mentor in full international and fans favourite Huracan, Daví marshalled the game, keeping the Acaco strikeforce well under control, playing out from the back, and determining the pace of the game (slow to tedious) as Jaguar took control to squeeze out a narrow victory from the team hoping to match them on four Copa wins. As with last year this was a tie between two big sides who have been disappointing in the state championship this season, both of whom missed out on the closura and Liga-TQ football, making this their only hope of intercontinental football next year. Neither side looked terribly enthusiastic about booking their place in the multiversal competitions; cautious from the off, conservative throughout and it seemed the strikers were happy to be dominated by impressive defences with only scraps to pick on.

Narcís' goal close to the half-hour mark, laid on by his twin brother and winger Izurbe Kisin-Abadía, was a rare moment of forward craft in a match where creativity was in low supply; Izurbe wriggling down the right wing and giving Phallcha Quillahuaman the slip after a sequence of feints and dummies, bursting into the box and finding his brother as Aubin Mobat almost deserved an assist himself for intelligent running that split the Acaco defence in half. Narcís had the ball delivered at the perfect weight straight to his shooting foot and he made no mistake low past Davide Sandino and into the corner of the net like a bullet. It was a fine goal but paltry pickings in a forgettable game - we even had a Farv in the line-up in Acaco's Jâsín Wíndândaò who could not set the game on fire, something most Farves do by habit rather than design; at one point even the Jaguares fans, in high spirits, were calling for Acaco's other Farv, attacking midfielder Jôk Ônzántolöìra, to come off the bench and liven things up. But coach Marcos Bran, a quality defender himself back in the day, apparently didn't hear their pleas and the game ground to a slow, sorry halt on 90 minutes with very little between the teams. Jaguares captain Ufrasio Ena lifted the cup to his bemused supporters as they roused themselves from slumber for an encouraging and some might say relieved cheer.

In the glamour stakes, there really is only one team in all Tequilo who do not stand in the sparkling shadow of Real Gardaresso, and that is their Antivadorio rivals, Florentino, the famous Violets. They may not have the wider appeal that Real have achieved but certainly a club with flair and attacking creativity at the heart of their playing philosophy over so many decades of success means Los Violetas are naturally associated with the more glamorous side of the game. Many of the greats of antiquity have played here in Florentin, including legendary fatty, footballer, circus strongman and cinema superstar Humberto Bustamante, El Lechero or ‘The Milkman’; Wightling World Cup winners Mardellion Hummingbird and Marriner Friend-Forsaken along with fellow countryman and progenitor of the famous Bonesea Jones’ dynasty - Asbo Jones; local legends here in these parts Hernando de la Nata, Gavriel Carrión and Sansón, and of course El Ladrillo - The Brick - colourful defender Gianfrancesco Lego, the first galloping fullback for whom the stadium is named.

Pre-season protests about the release of two star players to clubs in Audioslavia are all but forgotten - Xaime Medal and Martí Calderon turned out after all to be surplus to requirements as the Violets marched to a thoroughly deserved national title in a thrilling final day of the Liga-TQ season, with the lead at the top changing hands three times before Pitxi-Pitxi 77 succumbed to a shock home defeat to Motozintla, whilst Aueioeay W'ight-a led his charges to a narrow victory at Ciupa Azul. And it was veteran Audioslav striker Venâncio Paiva who can claim to have won the title single-handedly as he hit a brace, including the winner, in that famous final-day victory.

Here is one of the superpowers of football in Tequilo, at the heart of one of the country's most extraordinary cities. Like Huayna-Comitán in Guastenango, Ixta-Comitán has been beautifully preserved as a great Indigo city state, although unlike it’s rival city, it is surrounded by a much less interesting and more heavily industrialised region; it’s borders are now more or less the end of traditional Ixta cultural identity. The city itself supports three top flight or 1-Sección clubs, with Jaguars and Serpentina both strong clubs in the state championship. But there is only one club in the state - and arguably the nation - that all others must merely follow, the mighty Pitxi-Pitxi 77. Formed nearly 150 years ago they are one of the oldest clubs in the country, and are the most favoured by the strong Ixta population throughout Chazapa and the nation. Rivalled only by Puezan states’ CF Frantzixko-A, they have the most state titles and are surely the widest supported - CFFA are popular of course, but also the team everyone loves to hate: not so the ’77os, who really are just about everyone’s second favourite team.

The 77o chased Florentino all the way through the Liga-TQ championship but really only got ahead with one game to spare, and looked like they had stolen the title away from the Violets at the death for a successful title defence - but it wasn't to be with a heartbreaking home defeat on the final day of the season to Motozintla consigning them to second place.

At Motozintla, so it is said, they never stop going on about how big they are. And what they are going to do next to prove they are the greatest. To be fair, they are big. Very big. No-one outside of Moto likes to admit it, but they rival CFFA and Pitxi-Pitxi 77 for support across the country. They have spent much of their history inside the 10-Nacional, the country's best ten clubs by state championships, but their best days are a long way behind them. Hence all the talk about what they are going to do next. With the resources they have, the backing they can rely on, the time will surely come when Motozintla are great again - but many both inside and outside of the supporter base also hint darkly at the Curse of Moto - that the Wights of Pitxi (mythical demons of Confusionism) are against them for rumoured transgressions that offended the spirits. It's all tosh of course, but makes for great content. And there definitely is something wrong when a club the size of Moto just can't win anything any more.

Nowadays, in an effort to turn over the Curse of Moto, we have eccentric chairman and flamboyant businessman Gedeó Dosrius and his 'Make Moto Great Again' campaign... and it wasn't a bad start, as the team stormed to an overdue state championship and after a poor start, rallied in Liga-TQ to take third place and even determine the outcome of the title on the final day. Promising times ahead.

Only Pitxi-Pitxi 77 of Chazapa state come close to matching the dominance of Los Oros in domestic football, each of the two teams winning over 20 state championships. But with six Copa Tequilo wins, four more than the '77os and two more than any other team, it is CF Frantxizko-A who hold the crown as most successful team of all time; in amongst those titles are a rare cup and state championship double, and the first four-in-a-row of state titles, with that record only ever having been matched once, by Cooperativa of Ocotapa state. The widest supported team in the country, they rightly claim to be both the biggest and the best - but it’s this attitude that also makes them a divisive team - while the ‘77os are just about everyone’s second team, The Golds certainly are not; you either love them or you hate them. In football-mad Puezan they have dominated a championship that otherwise still has some big and famous clubs, including Peru Urzagui, Urbo Ibaeta, Sporta Ibaeta, KKA Bixintxo and Unuiĝinta - but none have managed to come close to the huge status of CFFA.

This season CFFA finally came out of a slump to win their first state championship in over a decade and take a shot at the national title, though they were never close to reaching the lead of Florentino and deadly rivals Pitxi-Pitxi 77, eventually coming in fourth. But it shows promise for a team in development and hoping to improve again next season. They will happily settle for their first appearance in intercontinental football with a place in the Challengers Cup.

It has been a long time since Ciupa Azul were anything but an average top flight team with occasional dips into the second tier. Almost no-one alive can remember when the big team from the city of Ciupa were actually a top team in the state of Guastenango and considered a top team in the country. It seems hardly imaginable, but there was a time when legendary midfielder Humberto Toca lead the Blues at a state and cup double - then only the second team to do it and in the process setting a record for the biggest win in the final that would stand for more than fifty years when they beat Fortuna Tulan 8-1 in the eighth Copa. Thirty years after that famous double they would win a second and last cup; they would stack up a decent six state titles - but then, around seventy years ago, they stopped being good at anything.

All that changed this season as Los Azules came from seemingly nowhere and, led by their one great asset, Roxelio Toran having the season of his career, they won the state to qualify for a wholly unexpected Liga-TQ Primera place. And though they dropped off toward the end to finish fifth, they had surprised everyone to compete well through the competition: no-one had given them a hope. All fingers are crossed at El Torcado, hoping for a place in the Vilitan Cove Invitational and a first ever appearance in an intercontinental tournament.

Hailing from the same city as Pitxi-Pitxi 77, the Jags stand in the shadow of the nation's most successful club, and you might think they'd struggle to get noticed. On the contrary, the 77o's cross-town rivals have been hugely successful in their own right, have often competed on level terms with the big guns, and will remind everyone that they have won more Copas than them. The rivalry is largely a friendly one, often with families split down the middle in their loyalties, and the Jags fans have not been short of their own glory days. Plus they go down in history as the only team to fork out actual cash for the Worst Player of All Time - Haizinto. They claim it was an ID mix-up, but that doesn't detract from paying ¢40 for the defender (just under half an NS dollar) and even letting him have one game in the seniors. That aside, the popular team from Ixta-Comitán are always a good bet for entertainment.

Ever in the shadow of their city rivals Pixti-Pitxi 77, Jaguares nevertheless are making this competition their speciality as they moved to within one title of equalling CFFA for the most Copa wins, taking their fifth title in what was a cagey affair against Acacoyagua, guaranteeing intercontinental football for the first time.

LOS COSMOPOLITAS

With the introduction of the 'no limits' Cosmopolitas Rule allowing clubs in Tequilo to sign as many foreigners as they fancied, the expected rush for glamorous signings really didn't happen as there wasn't a club in the country who could afford an established name from abroad and even the free agents were mostly out of their pay league. Farves running out of the anarchy of their homeland did come from lower leagues, and one or two veterans from the 'big nations' in Ao and Rushmore - but the most glamourous signing was probably Real Gardaresso's loan move for Jodi Servais, who proved a big draw wherever he went and had a good season in the Antivador state championship, even if Real's third placed finish was disappointing. Apart from Jodi, the free agents were a mix of a few vets and a lot of young hopefuls - and in the final standings of average match ratings for all the foreign types in the country, five of the six over-25s finished in the top ten, with Venâncio Paiva, Rüí Lütáò, Praxil Law and Mâártën Âllámbâlár all impressing for their clubs. Three youngsters did exceptionally well - Jodi Servais, Goran Olazabar at Inter and Sâálvó Lâegi at Argón all in the top ten with Goran taking second spot in the rankings overall. But it was a veteran at Resplendiente, and one who arrived with little fanfare, who won the most plaudits - and rating points - over the season, to take both the 'Cosmos' player of the season and overall player of the season to boot - Cygnet Valeri, out of The Askari Union in Rushmore.

COSMOS PLAYER OF THE SEASON
CYGNET VALERI, RESPLENDIENTE

The paperwork Cygnet arrived with left a lot to be desired and though he was a well-established ever-present for an incredible ten seasons at Walston Brook Albion in the EFL league before giving Tequilo a go - seemed like a good decision, at least for Crows fans - the history sheet he handed over at the immigration check, damp from sea-spray and rather smudged, suggests he was a youth product of 'Mille Sailor Lunas' in the Union in his youth, though there is little in the way of records to suggest who that team is. Whatever his background, his bonafide service at WBA was already impressive and he arrived in La Conon clearly intent on demonstrating he's not finished yet. Continuing where he left off with the Albion, he was ever-present in his first season as The Crows finished third again in the Maranco State Championship. Coach Ilhicadira has suggested, with his two veteran captains Emanuel Fonseca and Jeremías Carballal both considering retirement, that Cygnet is already next in line to take the armband.

Never one to miss a financial payout, the Union Pitxi de Tequilo - the FA to you and me - inaugurated an annual end-of-season charity kickabout featuring a selection of half-decent Tequiloa who had a good season but wouldn't make the national team, fancily named the TQ-Selección, up against the best of the foreign types making their living in Tequilo these days. A modest 12,000 curious sorts made their way to the Velodrome in Santa Clares for the match and witnessed an interesting, but typically end-of-season-kickabout style end of season 'exhibition match' in which the Cosmos - that would be the foreign types - came out on top in what almost could have been a pre-agreed result, providing goals at each end, plenty of action, and a commendable win for the guests to reassure them they are still welcome and valued in Tequiloan society. The match raised a few chèlinpesos for charity too, so that's a bonus. Well done to Feite Tannhaeuser, the Nephari winger at Fábrica, for a man of the match performance including an assist for the second goal.

THE 77o WILL ALLOW IXTUB TÜN TO GO - FOR THE RIGHT PRICE
Young superstar giant Ixtub Tün looks set to move abroad in what is likely to be a record-breaking transfer fee for Tequiloan football. Rumour has it Olympia Bogograd are in negotiation with Pitxi-Pitxi 77, who have said they will not stand in the way if the defensive midfielder really wants to leave. And apparently, he wouldn't mind a change of scenery and more games in intercontinental football. While Motozintla might hava a sniff at railroading, they likely couldn't match Olympia's cash reserve and surely the 77o wouldn't sell to a Liga-TQ rival.

VILCA HUALLA TO QUIT ÍNDIGO
Team captain and NT vice captain Vilca Hualla has sensationally handed in a transfer request at his under-achieving club Índigo Huayna - and by all accounts, he wants to go abroad as well. Early information suggests no-one has yet expressed an interest, but surely the rising star, 23, who is likely to be annointed national team captain when the current world cup cycle completes, will garner plenty of interest from the more observant nations. He's another one probably looking for more intercontinental football to improve his all-round game.

THAT WAS THE SEASON THAT WAS... WITH MOSEY ACKANARD & THE REST

Liga-TQ Cálculo-2 - that is to say, second season - is done, and we've just a few honours to bestow, and a few guest writers to give us their views on the season, before we put this mission to bed and start a new one. The intercontinental transfer window closes in 24 hours and that will signal the start of Cálculo-3 - will Florentino defend their title? Can Moto make an impression in the Challengers Cup? What will happen at moneybags Haïtiens, and their crazy plans for world domination? But that's a story for another cut-off - today, we'll be talking to spivvy spittalninny Mosey Ackanard about his work with The Mussels of Lipa; newly-retired keeper Marko Zuazo, fresh from winning Liga-TQ with Florentino, ponders life after pitxi; gregarious chairman Gedeó Dosrius reviews his performance in blockbuster fly-on-the-wall Making Moto Great Again; Xose Ron and Dolores give us their round up of life in The Sardine Can, the food outlet at lower-league Sardíneros; and we have special guest Mardelio Colibrí, front man of Tequilo's international music sensation Ultra-Mariachi, on La Liga, following Los Pitxileros, and getting the Mariachi's dog Basil into a flak jacket for a visit to Farfadillis. All that and more, coming up after these end-of-season awards.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON
TLACOLOTL - PITXI-PITXI 77

The 21-year old striker's rise to the top of Tequiloan pitxi has been so remarkable that it seems like he has been around forever, despite his young age. The faith shown in him at 17 by his club manager Eskaminzim, where he had been a regular since just after his 16th birthday, was soon to be matched by the first national team manager Mauricio Nores, who surprisingly selected him as a reserve player for the Baptism of Fire-72 squad. Halfway through that tournament he got his shot at glory with an injury to Roxelio Toran, and grabbed it with both feet and his head. He hasn't looked back, either for club or country, now leading the national team scoring charts with 35 goals already from an extraordinary 54 caps; and having won back-to-back state championships, the inaugural Liga-TQ, and a runners-up medal this year too. He is now, surely, the best player in the country, an unstoppable warhorse who has again had a sublime season, finishing with the highest average rating in Liga-TQ and as top scorer.

"He has kept us singing through some of the maddest adventures," says Ultra-Mariachi Mardelio Colibrí, who has followed the national team, Los Pitxileros, through thick and thin, "like that 6-2 win over The Jovannic in Kelssek in the Cup of Harmony, scoring one, assisting two, and forcing two own-goals with his aggression and mischievous harrassment of their defence - it was wet and cold and even Basil was depressed when we got into the ground - he wanted to go home! - but by the end, we were all barking."

That fairly sums up his contribution to most games this season, claims Boney cocksparrow Mosey Ackanard: "he's a nightmare to play against, a bully who's only going to give you a hard time as a defender, guaranteed. If you're not up for it, he'll walk all over you."

HONOURABLE MENTION: Getting his first national team call-up and winning the Liga-TQ title - not a bad year's work for Florentino defender Antton Machinena, 26.

YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON
ALEX GALLO - FLORENTINO

In an extraordinary season for Los Violetas, there were plenty of stories to focus on including the coming of age of not one but two young strikers, rotating alongside Audioslav mentor Venâncio Paiva, a canny free transfer from KT Koroatuz who turned Florentino's fortunes around - not least by the work he did in maturing the contributions of Chodofrodo March, 18, and Alex Gallo, 19. Both had brilliant seasons as their team marched toward State and Liga-TQ titles; both caught the eye but it was the stylish young Alex Gallo who took the YPoS award for his better average rating and for being just half a metre ahead of Chodofrodo March. Already a fixture in the Tequilo under-18s and soon to be promoted to the under-21s, he has learned from some influential people around him and is sucking up the expertise provided by manager Huey Wight and Audioslav forward Paiva. With plenty of young attacking talent available for the national team, competition is going to be healthy for grabbing the one slot that might be available alongside Tlacolotl, and this season Alex has proven he will be there or thereabouts for selection. National team coach Isaac Martí has confirmed already that he will feature in the upcoming IAC squad; if his development continues, he will present a real threat to current forward incumbent Ecuador and pretenders Alexandre Calvoecheaga and Ito. But he'll need to work hard to keep up.

"No fear of that," says former team mate Marko Zuazo, who was first choice keeper for Los Violetas and won the title with them before retiring, "the boy is as dilligent as he is stylish - he's got the substance for it, I've never seen a youth graduate work so hard and listen so closely to the seasoned pros around him. He'll keep learning his whole career, it's in his make-up. He's never too smart to learn, never to proud to improve; I like him a lot."

HONOURABLE MENTION: Rotating with young Alex, dual-national striker Chodofrodo March, also of Bonesea, was a close second in the attacking prospects at Florentino.

FOREIGN PLAYER OF THE SEASON
CYGNET VALERI - RESPLENDIENTE

The paperwork Cygnet arrived with left a lot to be desired and though he was a well-established ever-present for an incredible ten seasons at Walston Brook Albion in the EFL league before giving Tequilo a go - seemed like a good decision, at least for Crows fans - the history sheet he handed over at the immigration check, damp from sea-spray and rather smudged, suggests he was a youth product of 'Mille Sailor Lunas' in the Union in his youth, though there is little in the way of records to suggest who that team is. Whatever his background, his bonafide service at WBA was already impressive and he arrived in La Conon clearly intent on demonstrating he's not finished yet. Continuing where he left off with the Albion, he was ever-present in his first season as The Crows finished third again in the Maranco State Championship. Coach Ilhicadira has suggested, with his two veteran captains Emanuel Fonseca and Jeremías Carballal both considering retirement, that Cygnet is already next in line to take the armband.

"I have to be honest, I'd never heard of him," says Mosey Ackanard, never one to shy from shooting an honest bullet, "and you think, who are all these old legs, these itinerant rejects from the netherverse blocking up our rosters these days? - But I'll tell you what, I'm eating my humble pie here, this Valeri fella looks a right bargain."

Mosey Ackanard being made to eat humble pie. Well done Cygnet Valeri - that's not something that happens every day.

HONOURABLE MENTION: Inter Raití's 20-year old Astograthi leftback Goran Olazabar, signed on a free from Athletic Club Olarria looks like the kind of deal Mosey would give his right arm for.

MANAGER OF THE SEASON
AUEIOEAY W'IGHTA - FLORENTINO

Commonly known as Huey Wight, the Antivadoro indegene manager at Florentino could not have been in for a harder start this season when losing star players Xaime Medal and Martí Calderon to clubs in Audioslavia, in exchange for what appeared to be, as Mosey would call it, "a pair of old legs" from KT Koroatuz in the slight form of Venâncio Paiva. All in all it looked a poor bit of business by the Florentino board and cued a lot of angry exchanges with depressed supporters, who were looking at a team seemingly well on the decline and accepting of it's own fate. But Huey had other plans...

Venâncio Paiva turned out to be a very good piece of business indeed, proving a great asset up front in his own right and unlucky not to win the Foreign Player of The Season award; whilst also bringing the best out of players around him including top youngsters Chodofrodo March and Alex Gallo. But it was in defense that Huey also showed his managerial skills, bringing in another free foreigner in Scredda Smith, the Bonesman formerly at Orga City in Mercedini marshalling a very solid back line which saw the rise of Anton Machinena to the national team and more outstanding performances from Salazar de Alagon and Leon Carreño. Putting two key mentors into the team and letting them run with it brought a first national title for Los Violetas and plenty of plaudits from fans and players alike.

"Huey's a genius," said title-winning keeper Marko Zuazo. And then he said nothing more. Because what else is there to say?

HONOURABLE MENTION: Well he's right here in the studio so we'd better say lower league miracle worker Mosey Ackanard, keeping Mejillones Lipa in the second tier at the first attempt.

THE WOODEN SPOON
CHRISTOFFER HENJUM - EQUIPO CAIMÁN

It was a season to forget for the young coach from Beomark, who had been a very well thought-of youth team coach at Equipo. They had just come off a State title-winning season and then a very creditable 5th place in the inaugural Liga-TQ under old coach Narciso Aguiar who decided to call it a day and retire at the top of his game. Everyone around the Gators were stunned when the board decided to promote from within and put Christoffer in charge for the following season, and there was an early air of doom and gloom around the place. An awful season unfolded, in which there was great acrimony between coach and fans as he defended his position vociferously, and slightly off-kilter, while the team on the pitch struggled. Players looked disillusioned and angry. The Gators spent the whole season in the relegation spots. Two thirds of the way through, the board put Christoffer out of his misery, demoting him back to the youth team. The damage was done however, and only SC Raití's 9 point deduction for financial irregularities saved Equipo from the ignominy of relegation. As state title defenses go, it was awful.

"I hate to speak ill of the dead," says flamboyant businessman Gedeó Dosrius, with a distinct and ominous 'but' on the horizon, "but that fella at Equipo was on borrowed time from the day he took the job. No chance. And now, what was a promising career ahead, seems to have turned into a cul-de-sac because no-one's going to trust him again on this, are they?"

"I've called him up," says Dolores, the general do-it-all at lower league Sardíneros, "and offered him a job in the Sardine Can." No-one is quite sure if she means the club, or the club's food outlet. Director Xose Ron was unavailable for comment, despite sitting right next to Dolores in the studio at the time.

HONOURABLE MENTION: He's been telling us how good he is for years, and talked his way into the national team and a top transfer to 1830 Cathair, and now Xaime Medal has all but disappeared, García de Corcoles-style. Will he be back? "Of course I will!" he shouts.
