The prevailing emotion in the dressing room for the Sarzonian Over 35 national team was joy. After all, the team earned their first victory of the World Cup of Masters with a 3-0 result over The Fortem.

There was joy for Senior Stars striker Matt Lynch, who scored twice and added an assist on a goal by Zack Wilson. There was joy for Will Brantley, who notched four saves and earned a clean sheet for the first time in years. Wilson himself felt joy in being part of a Sarzonia side wearing their traditional kits, even though they were the away whites.

For manager Tyrone Manningham, however, his prevailing emotion wasn't joy. It was relief. Relief that his team finally had a result to show for the good form they were rounding into. Relief that his side were no longer bottom of the table, and in fact, were now in the thick of the race for one of the two berths in the quarterfinals from Group 1. Relief that a crowd that had been struggling to show much enthusiasm brought the energy to Dave Wilson Stadium.

Manningham also felt relief that Wilson wouldn't suddenly don his Incorporated Football Federation chairman's cap and fire him before the competition was even half over. It wasn't really much of a consideration for Wilson, but Manningham didn't feel like that was a slam dunk. After all, Sarzonia's gridball team moved on from their manager after only three matches, and they had a 10-game schedule in comparison to his side's eight games.

He thought about the game, and he allowed himself a worn smile. He recalled the focus the team had on the pitch from the opening kickoff. He recalled the booking Tim Rodney received for standing up for his teammate after a Fortem player laughed a dangerous tackle. He recalled the boisterous applause Lynch received for his first goal, one that reminded observers of why Lynch was a Hall of Famer. The crowd's energy remained high as Brantley snagged a dangerous cross intended for a Fortem striker and later when he robbed the same striker from point blank range.

He recalled how much better the mood was in the media room, how he felt more assured about answering questions about his team's performance. It was great to throw the growing weight off his shoulders and be able to just get back to managing his team.

The result was that the Senior Stars were suddenly just one point behind Northwest Kalactin and Kohnhead for first place in Group 1. They would face the latter team in their final match of the first half of qualifying before earning a well deserved bye. It didn't matter that they were behind the colonists from Sarzoclava on head to head result. They were in the thick of the race and they still had a chance at at least one more shot of athletic glory.

Some of the players were likely to go back to their post athletic lives even if the rumours that a seniors football league was in the works. Others might try to scratch that athletic itch again by continuing to play. All of that didn't matter right now. What mattered was Manningham reminding himself to enjoy the moment, realising that he truly didn't know if it would ever come again.

When you're approaching a break in your schedule, you always want to do so feeling like you're riding strong momentum.

The Sarzonian over 35 national team can feel that way after a second consecutive 3-0 victory, this time over Kohnhead to bring the Senior Stars level with the colonists representing Sarzoclava in points with six each. The Sarzoclavs have the head-to-head tiebreaker and a game in hand over the Senior Stars, and will face The Fortem tonight hoping to put some distance between themselves and Sarzonia.

Tyrone Manningham said the team's two consecutive victories tell him the team is beginning to develop chemistry after playing together for the past four matches.

"It's no accident," he said. "We were trying to find our way a little bit in the first two matches, but we seem to have gotten to know the rigours of playing football again and some of our lads and lasses who've played together before seem to have regained some of their timing."

Zack Wilson scored two goals and Matt Lynch added another, and the Incorporated Football Federation chairman said "it felt great" to be in the win column and to get the feeling of scoring an international goal again.

"I missed playing high level football, and this tournament is definitely reminding me of the days when I used to put on a Sarzonia kit," he said. He added a smile and said, "sure beats the hell out of the boardroom!"

Will Brantley notched a five-save effort for his second consecutive clean sheet, but said the team would welcome the respite from playing four consecutive matchdays.

"We aren't getting any younger," he said. "It's not like we can get out there and withstand the rigours of a 20-match-plus qualifying campaign for the World Cup. Some of us are just working our way into match fitness here."

Northwest Kalactin and Kohnhead are level on points with four each and are level in goal difference with minus-two goal differentials. Both teams are playing tonight in the first match, scheduled for 5 p.m. Sarzonian Standard Time at Dave Wilson Stadium. The Fortem-Sarzoclava match is set for 7:35 p.m. [OOC note: RP cutoff will be around the same time as the last two matchdays. This is just ICly.]

“They are all drunk, uncle”, Timon sobbed into his telephone.
“I thought all went good against APOC? Great game, 3:0, heard it on the news.”
“Yeah, but then they began to party and now these old tarts are in a half coma. And we have to play against these Libonesia guys tomorrow I know nothing about.”
“Well, you chose these bunker players for the tournament.”
“They were legends, when I was young I looked up to them. First Cupwinners out of nothing. Inspiring players…”
“And they still play great, don’t they?”
“Yes, but… I had teams with children where the most were more mature and disciplined.”
“Seems discipline wasn’t so en vogue at their time. And they get now the chance to live a live they hadn’t in their days.”
“They could binge drink at home. We have all of that. I get the sightseeing thing, but… our Goalkeeper came back with three men from her room!”
“At least she won’t come back home pregnant in her age, I guess.”
“Funny. What do I do now?”

“Get them coffee. Get them awake and sober. Another leisure day. And then...hope for the best.”
“That is your tip?”
“How are they doing so well, anyway, they are so old?”
“Oh, yes, but they can play. I am running the most between defense and midfield, as always, I was one of the best in dribbling, tackling and passing you now..”
“..and humble..”
“Exactly. I am orchestrating the game and they are perfect in moving, they know where to go to or stand, let the ball circle around. Alberz and Gocher are always at the right place when the ball gets to the goal. Ghiani is still a wonder and his freekicks.. they called him the new Di Brandini once, you know.”
“Seems they are working fine, like a machine. Maybe just give them the freedom and it works out. Some spare time and then they win it by themselves.”
“I guess I have no choice. If it fails here, do you help me to explain to the president why?”
“Dear nephew, I love you but…. I likewise love to live. Sorry.”
“Well, greet your wife anyway. Goodbye.”

Music is playing.

Wilhelm Freesinger: “Who beat Libonesia with one foot? Who survived the hardest group?”
Choir: “We did! We did!”
“Who played with head and wit? Who played in the finest kit?”
“We did! We did!”
“Who needs to get the fans back? Who does have the funniest flag?”
“We do! We do!”
“Who needs to replace Sarzonia? To show the viewers Gloria?”
“We do! We do!”
“Who gives the greatest show? And always makes the best call?”
“We do! We do!”
"Who will put all opponents down? Who will get the title crown?"
“We'll do! We'll do!”
“Who plays the finest ball? And does win it after all?”

As we start the second half of the World Cup of Masters tournament for over-35 national teams, it's time first to take a look at the first half of this tournament.

In Group 1, Sarzoclava are first in the group with a 3-0-1 record, good for nine points, and are just two points clear of Northwest Kalactin, who occupy the other knockout round berth from this group with a 2-1-1 record. Hot on their heels are the host nation Sarzonia, who have rebounded from one-goal defeats to the two group leaders with 3-0 victories over the other two teams. If Sarzonia can turn around and defeat one of the two teams ahead of them, they still harbour a realistic shot at qualifying for the knockout rounds with a 2-0-2 record. They would also need to stay ahead of Kohnhead lest that side get hot at the right time. Thus far, the highlight for The Fortem have been two draws. They lost to both Sarzonia and Sarzoclava by an aggregate scoreline of 5-0, dropping them to the bottom of the table.

Ziwana currently lead the pack in Group 2 with their only blemish being a draw against group bottom feeders South Osan that looks especially embarrassing since the latter team appear to be in contention for the worst team of this tournament. New Waldensia and Sylestone are both level for the second and final knockout round berth from this group, with both teams playing to a draw on Matchday 4. The Royal Kingdom of Quebec started off well with a 5-0 opening victory over South Osan, but have not played well since. Look for the battle between New Waldensia and Sylestone for a berth in the quarterfinals to be the defining point of this group.

Group 3 boasts the dominant team in the tournament thus far as Darmen remain the only team in this competition without a draw or a loss. Their plus-seven goal differential is one below Group 4 leaders Kriegiersien, whom we'll talk more about later. Much like Group 2, this group sees a battle for the second knockout round position between Megistos and HUElavia with tiebreakers being the only thing separating the teams after they played to a 3-3 draw on Matchday 3. Much like Quebec, Lochario have faded from contention after a strong early going. Indusse make a case for worst team in the competition as the only team without a victory or a draw, although their goal differential of minus-7 is noticeably better than South Osan's -11 or The Jovannic's minus-10 in Group 4.

Speaking of Group 4, Kriegiersien lead the way there as their players have taken to the cultural landmarks of Wilmington like fish to water. They've also taken well to football here in Sarzonia, having only lost to Terre Septentrionale on Matchday 3 by a 2-1 margin. Libonesia are three points behind with The APOC Coalition hot on their tails on six points from two victories. The Northmen are one match behind the knockout rounds, so they could still potentially get hot at the right time and threaten for a knockout round berth. The Jovannic are most likely playing out the string after a 1-0-3 beginning.

“Wake up you maggots!”

Haudels stomped into the room with Freesinger, Wiesner and Marky Mark.

“What?”, the three startled up from the floor they were lying.
“Thanks to you we lost 3:0 against The Jovannic, a bunch of nonames.“
„We had the quarter final match already?“
„No, we have to play every team in the group twice.“
„Oh. Really? Why?“
„Because. The thing is, because you three were too wasted after the last party, we had to play with 8 against 11. And that was the result.“
„Ohhh. I thought the group was done and we had some time..“
„It is not over until the fat lady sings.“
„Sissy did sing? But keep it down please. My head.“
„I am not fat, you doofus“, a voice came from the back.
„Ok, you three sober up. And then we train. And no more parties for you. No more dilly-dally. You want to see other cities and people? Fine. But you have to earn it!“
„Aw, crap. I am too old for this sh..“
„You won‘t get much older if we come back beaten, I swear it. You think you know hard times from after the war, hard times in the bunker? Wait until the president is done with you if he founds out who spoiled the event. Get these three coffee!“

Fortunes can turn quickly in sports, and masters football is no exception.

Two matches into the inaugural World Cup of Masters, the Sarzonian over 35 national team were languishing at the bottom of the Group 1 table after two losses, including their opening defeat to Sarzoclava.

Now, after the opening match of the second half of the group stage, Sarzonia avenged that opening loss with a 3-0 victory that propelled the Senior Stars to the top of the table. They are level with the colonial side on wins, head to head results, and points, but Sarzonia have the second tiebreaker, head to head goal differential.

Goalkeeper Will Brantley was Sarzonia's best player in the early going, notching six saves including a point blank shot from Sarzoclav forward Jeri Linchcom on a rebound of a Jaquice Howard bid in the 17th minute. The save of Linchcomb's shot energised the Senior Stars and Sarzonia forward Matt Lynch soon capitalised on the switch in momentum with a blistering shot past Sarzoclav goalie Pete Hansen for the first goal of the match in the 21st minute.

Midfielder Ettore Salivani, Jr. made it 2-0 as the fourth official signaled there would be three minutes of stoppage time added after fellow middie Tim Rodney fired a cross into the 18-yard box. Salivani celebrated his goal by pointing to his father and his son, Ettore III in the stands.

The momentum from the first half carried over into the second, though Hansen prevented the match from having a much worse scoreline with three breathtaking saves. It wasn't until reserve forward Emilio Ruiz headed in a Brad Tremblay cross in the 87th minute that the Senior Stars could finally put away the colonists' challenge.

Senior Stars manager Tyrone Manningham warned his team that their next opponents Northwest Kalactin beat them in their previous meeting, but Sarzonia took an undeniable step toward a possible quarterfinals berth. However, he only needed to point out that Kriegiersien lost 3-0 to a The Jovannic side playing to poor form in the first half of qualifying.

"We can't take anything for granted," Manningham said. He hoped that his collection of older, more experienced players didn't need him to issue that reminder.

Tour de force

"And this on the left is a cruiser from Darmen...", said Haudels.
"That is a local fisher boat", panted Lessels.
"You are the worst tour guide I have ever seen", gazed Gocher.

Haudels stopped.
“Ok, drinking pause.”
Everyone of the team let themself sink on the ground, catching breath and water after 10 miles running through the city.

“You had your sightseeing with professionals, but a deal is a deal. We win against Terre Septentrionale, leisure time. We don’t, more training”, Haudels said.

“A goal in the last minute and it was a draw. So close. That is unfair.”
“It is simple, we win, we go on, you get free time. Else, even more training. Against APOC we have to win. We can make history!”

“Ahhhh, I am soon history if this goes on much longer.”
“I prefer the history of my wine. That is important.”
“Why can’t we just have fun?”

Haudels mood sank. He closed his eyes, stretched and took a deep breath.

“We will now attend a further historical building, 5 miles from here. Come on”, he shouted fierce, while the others raised moaning. And the old caravan crept on through Wilmington.

All of a sudden, Sarzonia's group stage finale against Kohnhead takes on importance.

After a drab goalless draw against bottom of the table The Fortem, the Sarzonian over 35 national team are just three points clear of the Olden Brains for first place in Group 1. They are also four points clear of Sarzoclava and would have the edge in head to head goal differential if the teams remained level.

"We've got a challenge tomorrow night, that's for sure," Senior Stars manager Tyrone Manningham said. "Our offence right now can't seem to get out of its own way. Fortunately, [goalkeeper] Will [Brantley] has been sharp for us ever since Matchday two. Brantley currently has a five-match goalless streak, not allowing a goal in 462 minutes.

"I feel good about the way the defence is playing in front of me right now," Brantley said. "They've been making it easy for me to make stops."

Sarzoclava will face Northwest Kalactin in the other Group 1 match. The draw officially eliminated The Fortem from knockout round contention. That brought little consolation to Matt Lynch, as the Hall of Fame striker was repeatedly frustrated by failing to score, including a rocket from point blank range in the 26th minute that found the goalkeeper's off foot and caromed to a defender who cleared the ball out of danger.

"If I scored that, we'd already be through to the quarterfinals," Lynch said. "We need to do a better job of developing a killer instinct."

Many of the players on this Senior Stars team also were on the Sarzonian national football teams that failed to qualify for the World Cup in two consecutive campaigns. Zack Wilson dismissed talk that would have any bearing on this competition.

"That was a completely different story," he said. "We have eight matches to get it right. Back then, it was a long slog. Compared to then, this is a sprint."

A goalless draw against Kohnhead wasn't how anyone on the Sarzonian national over 35 football team envisioned winning Group 1 in the inaugural World Cup of Masters, but that's how it happened.

The result means that Sarzonia will go into its final matchday bye with an opportunity to work on overcoming its sudden goalscoring drought. The Senior Stars haven't scored since their 1-0 victory over Northwest Kalactin.

"We're all frustrated," forward Matt Lynch admitted after the match. "We wanted to go into the knockout round with momentum and we couldn't get it done the way we wanted to."

They'll get to sit back and learn who their opponents will be in the knockout rounds since they have the bye. As for the other groups, Darmen in Group 3 and Kriegiersien in Group 4 have all clinched spots in the quarterfinals. Kohnhead and Northwest Kalactin will face each other with a berth in the quarterfinal rounds on the line. If either side win the match, they will join Sarzonia in the knockout round. Sarzoclava would need both a victory over The Fortem and a draw between Kohnhead and Northwest Kalactin to join their colonial administrators.

New Waldensia and Sylestone will face each other in a battle for the top spot in Group 2 on the line. If either team win or draw, they would both advance to the knockouts. Ziwana will face a Royal Kingdom of Quebec side that have been eliminated from knockout round contention. For them to advance, they would need either team to lose and they would need to win.

Darmen have punched their ticket into the knockout rounds despite losing their last two matches. They were the only remaining team without a draw or a loss after their fifth match, but a loss to bottom of table Indusse seemed to have derailed what appeared to be a runaway train. Megistos and HUElavia are still fighting for a chance to join Darmen. Los Amarillos will face the group leaders while Megistos have giant-slaying Indusse in their group stage finale.

Group 4 has already sent Kriegiersien to the knockout rounds, but The Jovannic missed a chance to clinch their own spot in the quarterfinals after a 4-4 draw against Terre Septentrionale. They will now have to watch their fate unfold as Kriegiersien face current bottom of table Libonesia and The APOC Coalition battle Terre Septentrionale for the second Group 4 position. That group are the only one in this competition where no team has been eliminated.

The APOC Coalition ahead of Terre Septentrionale on head to head results.

Knockout round information will be edited into this post shortly.

The eight teams in the knockout rounds are seeded as follows:

1. Darmen (6-0-2, 18 points, Group 3 champions)
2. New Waldensia (5-2-1, 17 points, Group 2 champions)
3. Kriegiersien (5-1-2, 16 points, Group 4 champions)

5. Sylestone (5-2-1, 17 points, Group 2 runners up)
6. Megistos (4-2-2, 14 points, Group 3 runners up)
7. Northwest Kalactin (4-1-3, 13 points, Group 1 runners up)
8. The Jovannic (3-2-3, 11 points, Group 4 runners up)

Since there would be no group stage rematches, re-seeding will not take place for the quarterfinals.

The matchups are as follows:
Darmen v. The Jovannic (Dave Wilson Stadium, Woodstock)
New Waldensia v. Northwest Kalactin (Mike Sarzo Stadium, Nicksia
Kriegiersien v. Megistos (The Iron Bowl, Portland)
Sarzonia v. Sylestone (Shipyard Stadium, Wilmington)

I have asked Delaclava to scorinate any knockout round matches Sarzonia plays, and he has agreed to do so.

A reminder that tomorrow is an off day. Scorination for the three quarterfinals matches I will do will be at the usual time.

The Shipyard Stadium in Wilmington. The match has now some attention and is shown on Kriegiersien TV on a small channel. Jill and Jack are broadcasting in a stadium that has a few Kriegiersien fans and locals that confused the match with a concert.

“And while the game against Libonesia is somehow coming to a stalemate, 1-1, we are going to talk a bit about our team. Jack?”

“Well, Libonesia needs a win, but they don’t seem to do much for it. So, who is this team from bunker 70436? They were descendants from one of many bunkers, Bunker 70436, who had been more or less self-sustaining cities after the nuclear war, which happened at April or Halloween, historians aren’t quite sure. These bunkers had sport teams and Bunker 70436 was the dominating force at the Fallout League in Soccer and Scorpion Ball. Games with more then 10 goals weren’t uncommon and many of their adversaries Ghouls, Mutants and bad news. So when they played in the first Kriegiersien Cup after the war, already harmed by radiation (look at their yellow skin and eyes), they were seen as easy prey from the less War affected regions.
But surprisingly they could beat all their opponents all over the country, in the end playing the final in Schoenwetter, winning 8:1.
After that the next years didn’t saw many countrywide competitions and the team crumbled together with the bunker they came from. Could they otherwise have become a dominant force in Kriegiersien in this time many wondered? We’ll never know.”

“Oh, sorry to interrupt, but Goalkeeper Sissy Looper is with the ball in the midfield. That could be dangerous, but the opponents are ignoring her, she sends the ball into the penalty area, Alberz heads it. Into the corner. Goal! What a Goal, an assist from the keeper. 2:1. The players from Kriegiersien are celebrating and that was it for Libonesia, only 2 Minutes to go. And as I hear in the match between The APOC Coalition and Terre Septentrionale they couldn’t decide about who should win, a 3-3 draw. Both are out. That means The Jovannic who seemed to be as good as eliminated after the first matches can now jubilate at their radios or TVs or wherever they are. “

“And the next opponent for Kriegiersien is Megistos, in Portland in The Iron Bowl. What do we now about them?”
“They like to play in a 7-1-2, that could be an interesting match. And their players aren’t that close to 35 either. Else we know more about Portland than about them.”
“We will hopefully come back with interviews with the players later.”

Several of the players on Sarzonia's over-35 national football team have been to Wilmington several times. Some even made their homes there, so the fact that Wilmington was building a new football grounds wasn't a surprise.

When the team got a chance to see the sparkling new grounds from the outside, they were blown away. They walked in and saw the maintenance crew scrubbing their dressing room thoroughly.

"SARS 2 protocols?" goalkeeper Will Brantley asked a harried-looking worker in an effort to brighten her day.

"No, we haven't had to follow those in over a month," Hazel Douglass said, rolling her eyes. "It's the players from Kriegiersien. They celebrated winning the group and trashed the dressing room. Thankfully, we're almost done cleaning up the mess."

Tyrone Manningham tried unsuccessfully to stifle a chuckle at Douglass's predicament. The other stadiums that hosted the group stage matches weren't trashed, and certainly didn't require an extra day to clean up. The Senior Stars were the fourth seeds and, thus were the home side against Sylestone despite the latter side carrying a better record into their quarterfinal matchup.

That record was part of the reason The Portland Press-Herald and The Wilmington Courier-Journal both predicted a Sylestone victory. The Nicksia Telegram predicted Sarzonia would win the match. The Woodstock Daily Mail hasn't been covering the tournament.

The players didn't mind being discounted by their own country's media. It fueled a us against the world mentality and inspired them to paint themselves as underdogs. Whether that would help them to a victory in what might amount to an upset was anyone's guess. Regardless, they were still playing in the tournament after a 0-0-2 beginning and despite their offence running out of gas toward the end of qualifying.

They largely had their stingy defence to thank for that, highlighted by Brantley earning six consecutive clean sheets, overall playing 556 consecutive scoreless minutes. The Senior Stars have only conceded three goals in eight matches. However, forward Matt Lynch admitted that the team's offensive struggles were a major concern.

"We haven't scored in the last two matches and only have one goal in the last three," he said. "That's not going to get it done."

The netting fluttered.

Tor Tong Lee ran off cheering.

All of four steps he made it before realizing that his right leg was suddenly a lot shorter than his left leg. He also discovered that the ball was being held comfortably in the arms of Marcia Castilho Alves. It had been his shoe that had flown off and gone into the goal, agitating the normally still netting.

No matter. The missed shot only meant that Tor Tong Lee would end the night on one goal, rather than two. As for the team from Darmen, they would beat HUElavia three goals to one and enter the quarterfinals to face the Jovannic. If victory against HUElavia was anything to go off of, the Darmeni team's form from the first half of the competition was coming back around. They would be a tough team to knock out of the knockouts.

Kai Alberz and Marc Gocher sitting in front of the TV in a hotel room. A recap of the Olympics closing ceremony flickers over the screen.

“Look, the Kriegiersien have signs. ‘Thank you’ and ‘Don’t forget’.”
“What does that mean?”
“I guess they are thanking the hosts and don’t want to forget these Olympics. Maybe.”
“And there is delegation from The Jovannic. They won silver in Football you know?”
“Wow. The guys who are playing here?”
“No, these are different players. I think.”
“Hey and now they are showing some of the games here.. that is us!”

Reporter on TV:
“And Kriegiersien is in the semi-final of the World Cup of Master after a 3:2 against Megistos. But it didn't look like that a long time. The defense of Megistos made it problematic for the Kriegiersien old men. Even with over 80% ball possession they couldn’t crack the stronghold with 7 players and two times deadly counter attacks lead to a goal. 2:0 at half time. The travel seemed to be over.
But then the team woke up. 1:2 after a distance shot from Ghiani and moments later Gocher scored in the penalty are, after a hustle like in a mosh pit.
Only a few moments to go and Alberz scored again after a corner with a trademark header. After the game we talked with him.
Alberz: When I finally had the freedom to move to the right spot it was easy to score. Thanks to the great corner from Janis.

“Pfff. Trademark. My goal was a trademark goal, with 4 players around me”, Gocher grumbled in front of the TV.
“Shhh, they are showing the other matches.”
“I can already tell you that New Waldensia will win. They are our next opponents.”
“Oh, they have so nice jerseys, like we had once. The blue at least.”
“You mean the overalls we are wearing just now?”
“Yes.”
“It’s better than being naked all the time. I hate it to come back home. Working as construction worker in the cold north.”
“Yeah working forever and mandatory nudity doesn’t make Kriegiersien a nice place. Every chance to travel should be taken. And see, working in the IT is much better. You can stay home and when you get older it is a nice job.”
“You nearly blew the bunker up once. Don’t know why they let you stay in this job.”
“I learned from the experience. Oh and Darmen is out. I just thought they had recovered.”

“Well it is everyone’s game now.”
Alberz changed the channel.

“Oh, look. Must be a scene from home. Everyone naked.”
“Errr… no, that is another sort of program.”
“Oh, I see.”

Both stared at the action on the screen for a while.

“Would you like to…”
“No.”
“Would you like to change channel to see the match from Sarzonia against Sylestone? They are playing live in some minutes.”
“Oh. Ok. They are playing now?”
“They get prime time for TV as host. And they had to bring a referee from Delaclava in. Per Airmail I think.”
“Interesting. Then get chips and beer out of the minibar.”
