Eahland was settled in successive waves from the west and south. The Ærdægfolc were not the first people here, but they're the first that we really know anything about, and even then still not much. They probably came up from the south.

The Afaleonene were the next wave, coming in from the southwest, bringing bronze tools and weapons, and they annihilated or assimilated the stone-age Ærdægfolc, to the point that, though there are still those who identify as Ærdægfolc, they're not really, genetically or culturally, a distinct people anymore.

The next wave was the Columbans, coming up from the south, with iron weapons and armor and better tactics, logistics, and organization. They didn't wipe out the Afaleonene the way the Afaleonene did the Ærdægfolc; they added Avalonia to their empire, established an overall government, and recruited Afaleonene into their legions and sent them to pacify other provinces on other edges of the Empire, with those foreign lands as their reward for service.

We Eahlcynn were next, brought in from the lakelands to the west firstly by the Columbans as mercenaries, paid in land, to defend Avalonia against the "Ærdægfolc" (even then not Ærdægfolc in any real sense, but more just other Afaleonene þeoda who hadn't submitted to the Columbans), in order to free up actual legions to deal with problems (many of them caused by our cynn) Columbe was having in the west and south. The Columbans eventually pulled their legions out of Avalonia entirely, and the Eahlcynn pretty quickly figured out that we were the only trained and experienced fighting-men left in the province, and took over, inviting more of our cyþþ and cynn east to help with the conquest and share in the spoils. We had less respect for Afaleonene culture, customs, and structures than the Columbans had, but neither did we wipe them out as they had the Ærdægfolc. We made entirely clear who was in charge of the new order, though.

Next came the Norþmenn, who were cyþþ of the Eahlcynn from the lakelands, and who came to the lands north of Eahland first, then raided south overland or down the Mere and up the rivers in their langscipas, and eventually invaded in force. Fighting went back and forth for hundreds of years, but Niweport and much of the Norþeasterne Cynerice was in their hands for most of that time, and in 879 Nearubæc fell and the rest of Eahland seemed likely to follow, until Æþelwulf the Great met them with an army raised of ragtags and leftovers, crushed the bulk of the Norþerne army in the field, marched on and recaptured Nearubæc, then continued on to drive the Norþmenn off Eahlisc soil and take Niweport, which had been a Norþerne city for a hundred years by then, and forced a peace from them. Though the Norþmenn were driven off, they occupied a large chunk of the cynerice for long enough that they left much of their blood and culture behind, and it remains to this day.

That was the last major incursion; later efforts by the Norþmenn and by various folk to the southwest failed.

Each of those cultures is "native" to the same degree, differing only in the order of arrival. The identity of the first folk to come here, before there were any folk for them to displace, is long lost to the mists of time.

TurtleShroom has a population of approximately one billion five hundred million creatures. Until the influx of many millions of Asian immigrants and refugees, they constituted half of the population.

The indigenous population of the Great Bountiful Empire are the sapient turtles and sapient mushrooms. These non-humans have lived in the region before the first men populated the North Lands, dating back before most of the world experienced the Bronze Age. The men that ultimately united the non-humans under their banner arrived and managed to successfully convert the native population over the next two centuries. This is known as the Miracle of TurtleShroom.

Today, there remains a population called the "Native TurtleShroomites", which are a remnant population of turtles and mushrooms that refused to convert to Christianity. They continue to cling to Tengri paganism and Mongoloid customs inherited from the Mongolian-cultured rulers that controlled the country from the thirteenth century to approximately 1500 AD.
