Personally, I wish more people celebrated, made movies, etc., (outside Russia) about Sputnik, Vostok 1, Luna 1, etc. As people have said above, spaceflight is an achievement of humanity, not of the USA or the USSR, and we should learn about and respect the feats of Soviet and other countries' engineers and cosmonauts as well. Although the Apollo missions were certainly some of the most difficult and most popular space missions, that popularity shouldn't come at the expense of other groundbreaking ones.
The ISS still strikes me with wonder and amazement whenever I'm able to catch a glimpse of it through light and air pollution.

Because you can look up at the night sky and observe something unfathomably far away (for the human mind) and note that, through perseverance, engineering, and science, someone actually went there.
Absolutely insane. The first kicks of a species to be born to travel the stars. Until NASA stopped getting funding and US-led Big Science died in the 90s, of course.

Yeah, it's totally insane that we wasted so much effort to go to a big dumb lifeless rock.

It was in the 70s that space stopped getting investment, not in the 90s.

Considering we successfully landed on the Moon proves to the scientific community that it is possible to land on other celestial bodies, so I would say it wasn't totally wasted.
