I feel you. I have only listened to one song from 2020, and that song was originally released in 2017! The song in question is Carpenter Brut's version of Maniac, before 2020 there was only a live version, but this year he finally released a studio version of the song. Other than that I have only 3 metal albums from 2020 in my backlog (and of them is a compilation of rough mixes and demos!). I'm extremely far behind in new music this year.

2020 has been a slow, plodding and really bad year for music.

Hell, I still have 12 albums to listen to from 2019 and 4 from 2018!

I listen to some really, really weird shit, yet the song that's stuck in my head right now is literally some royalty free piano tune that I'm pretty sure every single notable gaming Youtuber has used.

EDIT: Back to normal, now I have some Serbian turbofolk in my head

I mean... Cobain has been one of my biggest idols two times in my life, to the point where I stole his music taste for a few months. I don't think Nirvana is very good "objectively," but they make some good fun songs.

I mean, they're a comedy band. But that doesn't mean they don't put out some catchy tunes. Like that one.

Also fun fact: Travis Barker from Blink-182 was the drummer on one of their albums.

I personally don't see why a lot of people didn't like Russel Crowe in the Les Mis movie. I think he pulled off an absolutely phenomenal Javert; it's one of my favorite performances of the character. He made Javert feel very human and vulnerable, but at the same time threatening and almost devilish. Some of the lines he sung were absolutely haunting, such the "You know nothing of Javert" in The Confrontation and all of Javert's Suicide (SPOILER; HIGHLIGHT TO VIEW), especially the entirety of the song including and after "My heart is stone, and still it trembles!" were very good.

Spoilers below, so beware.

I feel like the best example of this is the song Stars about halfway through the movie.

It's usually a very emotional song, especially around the refrain "And if you fall, as Lucifer fell...", and some people say that Crowe sung it 'wrong', but I think he sung it like someone acting Javert should sing it. Crowe sounded detached, non-emotional, and I loved it. Javert's always been this character that I feel is supposed to be the epitome of a clinically depressed character putting on a mask; he's supposed to be more emotional around those he views as criminals or not righteous, but non-emotional around people he considers righteous, like himself. I always considered stars and most of Javert's Suicide more natural to be monotonous and detached, while, say, The Confrontation and the beginning part of Javert's Suicide where he confronts Valjean carrying Marius to make more sense to be sung emotionally charged. It's hard to describe, but I hope you get where I'm coming from.

Russel Crowe was a great Javert for Stars, Javert's Suicide, and Javert as an acting role; I preferred Phillip Quast for The Confrontation and other songs where he's facing off against criminals, such as The Prologue or The Robbery (Javert's Intervention).

Few questions regarding the now-completely-obsolete things called compilation albums. (CDs, not playlists)

Were one band compilation albums a good way to introduce bands to new people or were they just shameless money grabs?
and
Were various artists compilations good way to introduce new bands to people or were they just shameless money grabs?

Yes, the wording difference is done on purpose because that's how I view one band compilations vs various artists ones. Soundtrack albums don't count as various artists compilations, because that's not the reason they were made.

My answer to the first one is yes and no. If it's a 10-song one, it's a money grab. If it's a multi disc one with 20+ songs, it is a good introductory piece.

My answer to the second one is no and kinda. One or two songs per artists aren't really introducing anything but they aren't shameless money grabs either (depending on price of course, 5 bucks*or whatever currency you use on a gas station vs 20 in a record store), they could be songs with a certain theme or just top hits of X year, no problem with those.

GFriend's upcoming Song of the Sirens EP will be their second as a Big Hit subsidiary. Starting out under a relatively unknown label 5 years ago, the GFriend girls are renowned for their consistency and determination. "Song of the Sirens" once again demonstrates these qualities. Our queen Eunha is actively involved in the project's songwriting and production (as shown by the medley video linked above).

Should you wish to support the girls, you can order the album via Ktown4u (http://www.ktown4u.com/search?goodsTextSearch=song%20of%20the%20sirens) or the Weverse shop app.

Debating whether or not I want to add a chorus or flanger to my pedalboard. I already know I'm getting a more detailed phaser to replace my (now sold) Phase 90, but I also don't know if that would be overkill, since I'd only really use it for a few songs.

Atheris wrote:I personally don't see why a lot of people didn't like Russel Crowe in the Les Mis movie.

Because people in general don't like Russel Crowe for some reason.

I'm gonna probably have a table thrown at me or something for asking this, but why does everyone hate Nickelback? Because I heard one of their songs on the radio yesterday for the first time in my life and it wasn't that bad. Can't remember what song it was, but I've definitely heard worse. I just need someone to explain to me why they (apparently) suck.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of it comes from the fact that lead singer Chad Kroeger is widely perceived to be a complete douche, and people can't separate the art from the artist.

While I'm by no means a Nickelback fan, I don't mind "How You Remind Me" (2001) either.

Or maybe a lot of people just don't like post-grunge either and Nickelback being the face of it doesn't help.

But I do agree How You Remind Me is the one good song from them that I like.

The common argument I hear is that 'all their music sounds the same'. While I disagree that all their music sounds the same, I would personally argue that a lot of their stuff just doesn't feel as interesting as a lot of stuff I've heard - a lot of the instruments just feel as if they're there for just being there, without doing much interesting.

Was the one you heard called How You Remind Me? In my opinion, that one isn't too bad.

What are "meme songs"? It's not like artists make music with the purpose of getting it used in some stupid online video.
