Provincial and presidential elections held
27 June 2020

Provincial and presidential elections have been held. Initial results and exit polls forecast gains for the light blue bloc and trouble for the crimson blocs.

The Communist Party wins the governor election in Kobi, and its alliance retains a plurality in the provincial assembly, with the pale crimson alliance expected to continue. The pale crimson bloc loses seats and votes in other provinces, with Moderate People's Party and United Reform Party candidates projected to win election as governors in Matō and Kagi.

Out of the 10 candidates for the presidency, the Moderate People's Party and Socialist Party candidates are expected to advance to a runoff next week.

Altercation Breaks Out at a Sikh Temple in Lairang

Image
Sikhs with brandished swords routing out intruders.

At the Uông Nhon Gurdwara in Lairang, a fervid commotion was instigated between Sikh worshippers and intruders, resulting in brandished swords coming into play.

The intruders entered the temple at about 12:27 PM as visitors interested in the faith. Strikingly enough, all of the intruders were of Biểc ethnicity. The altercation broke out at approximately 12:45 PM when one of the intruders weaved a sword against a worshipper.

"He just waved it right in front of me. My arm was cut," says Paramdeep Sangere, the first victim of the attack.

Afterwards, the intruders swung other bladed weaponry from the temple, knives and even fired Roman candles inside. In response, several Sikhs grabbed their blades and proceeded to chase them out of the temple. As it progressed, crowds poured out of the temple for their safety. The altercation until 12:59 when the city police were called in to apprehend the intruders held captive.

"We can't just stand there and let them injure others. We had to fight," Indermohan Bhaman, a worship leader, said. He also claimed to have rallied the occupants to fight back.

Identities pertaining to the intruders are yet to be discerned by the police. Although, rumors circulated online that they were associated with several far-right groups, though the latter denied the allegations.

"As a Biểc," said Ngô Gia Khánh, a practitioner, "I am extremely disappointed on how they acted, and I am sorry about that."

The altercation left 25 people injured, a majority of them minor and two moderate.

Federalists beat Unionists by razor’s edge, Kostović concedes election as Beleska proclaims victory

Image

Beleska becomes first woman to lead Syara

The Zovahr Sentinel

Zovahr, Syara - It didn't seem like that bitter of an election, but it came down to the wire. With all the votes tallied and all Provinces reporting in it has been confirmed: The Federalists have managed to secure a majority in the High Council, and the Administration of Executive Radovan Kostović has come to an end.

The National Election Committee announced the results before the High Council late last night, confirming that the Federalist Party has gained enough seats in the High Council to usurp the pro-Warden Unionists, which will almost certainly result in the election of Anita Beleska to the role of Executive of the Commonality when the Council convenes for the vote later this month. The Federalists owe their victory in large part to the solid gains they spent the last four years building up throughout Makedon and Galania, and the inroads into Scitaria. Although the home Realm of Executive Kostović remained majority Unionist, even Provinces switched sides to undermine the wall of support the Executive was hoping would carry him through the election.

Kostović made a public statement just before midnight to assembled reporters outside the Hearth of the Council where he conceded the results of the elections, acknowledging that he would be voted out of office the next time the High Council meets. In his concession speech Kostović praised the accomplishments of the Commonality over the past four years and congratulated Beleska on her victory. He closed out his statement by stressing the need for Syara to be a guiding beacon of peace for Tyran, urging his predecessor to continue to look to the future and guide Syara on the path to peace and prosperity.

Anita Belesaka, once elected by the High Council, will enter into history as the first woman to hold the office of national leadership in modern Syara. The businesswoman turned politician, who has served as Viceroy of Makedon since 2012, spoke only for a few minutes during which she thanked her supporters for what she called “our shared victory”. Speaking from her party headquarters in Zovahr, a tearful Beleska said she looked forward to leading Syara into the future. Beleska touched briefly on a few things she hoped to accomplish in the coming years, namely nurturing Syara’s growing information technology sector, financial reforms, and increased educational opportunities for Syaran children and women.

Beleska certainly owes a great deal of her victory to Syara’s youth, who increasingly distanced themselves from the Wardens this election cycle. Although polling information is not complete, early sampling suggests Beleska carried the youth vote by nearly 58%, undercutting Kostović himself who received 64% of the youth vote din 2016. Analysts have already pointed out the Federalists usage of social media and the internet as a particularly successful example how the Federalists managed to overcome the Unionist control over many of Syara’s Provinces. Other observers have pointed out the gulf of election spending between the two; as Syara’s second wealthiest woman Beleska outspent Kostović nearly 2:1, a sign that big business may have finally settled on whom they think is the better choice for Syara’s economy.

Kostović may ultimately owe his defeat to his own party, however. Early studies suggest that the Unionists suffered from lower than average turnout even among traditional Warden strongholds in Hayreniky. Kostović’s insistence of reconciliation with neighboring Ruvelka isolated hard line Wardens who opposed such measures and did much to sow divisions within his own party between the traditionalists and the Neo-Wardens that Kostović is widely associated with.

It’s hard to imagine that Kostović’s insistence on a pro-active foreign policy helped matters much. With the Æsthurlavaj's civil war heating up, the prospect of Syaran involvement in a foreign conflict would have been a hard sell to a nation still recovering mentally from the aftermath of the Zemplen War. Meanwhile the Executive’s seemingly contradictory stances on defense spending; refusing to field weapon systems like nuclear submarines and strategic bombers while ballooning Syara’s armed forces to the largest in Tyran, most likely did not help matters.

Kostović is likely to return to his previous seat as Councilmember of the Iani Province, while Beleska’s ascension to the Executive Office will necessitate an election for the next Viceroy of Makedon. In the meantime, the soon-to-be Executive will soon be taking a trip to the Pantheon of the All Mother here in Zovahr to receive the blessing of the Holy Oracle in the coming days.

State Elections 2020: Conservatives make gains across the board; no clear majority in Norenstal

Ingrid Jensen, Political Correspondent
7 December 2020

Izenhoth- With over 55 million ballots cast, this Monday's state elections have given the Conservatives an important and much needed boost after the thrashing they faced in the last federal election. The party has managed to pick up seats in every state, with the biggest gains being won in the southern states of Vassengård and Norvia. In Vassengård, the government of First Minister Tobias Bidstrup (L) is on track to be ousted by the resurgent Conservatives and their junior coalition partners, the Agrarians. In Norvia, meanwhile, the government of First Minister Elin Albrechtsen (L) will remain in office, but with a reduced majority.

The Conservative successes come two years after Thor Gundersen's ousting as the party's federal leader following the disastrous outcome of the 2018 federal election. That election proved to be the party's second worst performance since 1959, when its support bottomed out in the midst of a major depression. The 2018 fiasco prompted a revolt within the party by the moderate New Conservatives, who succeeded in replacing Gundersen with the young, charismatic Grethe Vilstrup. Under her leadership, the party has sought to rehabilitate its image by repudiating the far-right and declaring an end to its decades long war on the New Kingdom consensus.

This decisive shift in the party was on full display on the campaign trail this year. Erna Karlsen, leader of the Vassengård Conservatives, campaigned on her party's support for an increase in the state's land value tax, while Banderhus First Minister Asbjørn Bonde touted his government's expansion of public housing. That such policies could one day be centerpieces of a Conservative Party campaign would have been unthinkable 20 years ago, when neoliberal policies enjoyed wide support in the party, and the New Conservatives were still a relatively marginal force.

Besides the Conservative advance in the south, the other major story of the night was in Norenstal, where National Labor faced a disappointing setback, losing 11 seats and, with them, the possibility of forming a majority government. This comes after a surge in support for far-left parties, which saw the Communist Party (KPD), led by Berit Thrane, surpass The Greens as the second largest party in the state parliament. Incumbent Mayor Eva Søndergaard's continued tenure has now been put into question, as it is unclear if National Labor can cobble together even a viable minority government, particularly with The Greens making clear they will not support another Søndergaard government after having withdrawn from their coalition with National Labor earlier this year over a budget dispute. Søndergaard was only able to survive that defection because there was no positive majority for a candidate to replace her.

One possible outcome of the current impasse is a minority government, likely led by Thrane, composed of the KPD, Radical Front, and the Pirate Party, supported by The Greens. Sources indicate Thrane is actively pursuing this option, and is currently in talks with Green leadership. If those talks were to fall through, another option would be for Thrane to seek support from the Liberals, although this is seen as a longshot. Meanwhile, the only plausible way for Søndergaard to hang onto her position involves some sort of rapprochement with the Greens and the pursuit of a traffic light coalition. While the Liberals would likely be willing enter into such a coalition, it's thought that major concessions will be needed to convince The Greens to get on board. The parties have a deadline of 4 January of next year to vote on a mayoral candidate.

If Thrane were to succeed Søndergaard in January, the 34 year old former teacher would become Norenstal's youngest head of government, and the second youngest head of a state government in Delkoran history (the youngest being Astrid Marett, current first minister of Cybria, who took office in 2012 at the age of 31). She would be Norenstal's second KPD premier and the first in over 40 years, following in the footsteps of the larger-than-life Jette Bruun, who led the state from 1964 to 1980.

Elsewhere on election night, races proceeded more or less as expected. In Cybria, Astrid Marett's National Labor - Green coalition lost a handful of seats to the insurgent far-left, but nonetheless cruised to an easy victory, securing a 14 seat majority. The incumbent governments in Banderhus and Førelskov were likewise returned to office by comfortable margins. In Lebøvenland, Bárður Ólavsson's government maintained its majority after Conservative gains mostly offset the losses suffered by his junior coalition partners, the Free Republicans.

Meanwhile, the results were an unmitigated disaster for the far-right, which suffered major losses. Alliance for National Action, the right-wing populist party that saw a peak in its support at the last federal election, fell out of multiple state parliaments entirely, ending the night left with just three seats in the Førelskov Assembly. This has been attributed to demoralization of the party's voters after Grethe Vilstrup's ascension as Conservative Party leader dashed their hopes of forging closer ties with the Conservatives.

Federal Economic Reforms Announced! Æthurheim Awaits With Baited Breath!

Image
Jarl Edvun Horst has yet to return to Goromandy following his concession to Lowellsburg

The tense standoff of last year between the Nasjonal Hær and the Federal forces of Lowellsburg has seemingly only been held in a pause since talks began between Jarl Edvun Horst and Monika Schæfer in December. Ever since, the only news we have received are stand down orders and promises for change. Unsure of the validity of these orders, the proud guardians of freedom held their posts, watching the Federal forces dispatched to mass on the border. The past four months, as Federal troops have busied themselves hunting down KSA insurgents across the north, Tritonsberg sinks into corporate and foreign control and the proud freedom fighters of the Nasjonal Hær and the militia of the Nasjonal Vakt have stood firm.

Now, at long last, word has finally reached us of the validity of the Federal claim. New measures, labeled Plan 71 though Plan 84, are intended to not only ease several freedom of speech acts and political representation while paving the route towards more liberal market capitalism. Trusted analysts have reviewed the released documents and contacted verified sympathizers in the Federal capital, and while the measures do not promise democratic elections, it does promise a greater measure of representation on a state level. This form of government is, ironically, referred to as ‘authoritarian democracy’. While this means the executive branch and federal government will still retain most of their power, the relaxation of media and measures towards open liberal-capital policies holds promise that Jarl Edvun Horst is not being held against his will, though no confirmation yet. No word from the Nasjonal leadership on standing down, but the debate in Klog Herte appears to be ongoing. More reported as we receive it.

Unity Day Celebrations for 126 Years as a Republikk!

Image
Carrying ceremonial TR-36 rifles, troopers of the elite drill team from the 1st Hærgruppe parade through the streets of Bredt Øye for this year’s Unity March

For all of us familiar with the holiday, it is a proud day of independence and rebirth. For those who are foreign or just learning of this in schools, there is no better time to learn of the toppling of the monarchy and the founding of the first Æþurian Republikk. When the inattentive and abusive monarchy was felled in 1895, it resulted in the collapse of a nation almost a thousand years old as the Jernriket had been founded in 1083 CE. While our country has endured a century of shifting regimes and policy, we never forget the year the people rose against those in power only by blood and established a new path for ourselves.

This year, even amidst political tensions and foreign intervention, our people come together to celebrate the birth of this Republikk. The Shields and Stripes have been our newest flag since 1992, but our truest one, the most honest to our core and intent. A Republikk of the citizenry. Our noble military marches down city streets to remind our citizens of who serves their best interest, and thousands of street fairs and festivals across the country pay homage to heroes of history, the Gods we worship and the future we hope to build. Tonight, we invite you to attend the fireworks shows registered to take place over a staggering 91% of cities and towns in Æþurheim, and for those who serve the nation, whether in uniform, as a civil servant, a patrol officer or firefighter, to remember your vitality of your duty and work.

So take a moment to look up at the Shields and Stripes, flying over your town hall, or your local armory, or in the middle of a drill field, over a school or outside a civic works building. Remember the heroes who gave their lives for what that flag represents, and the strength it shows to the world.

We are Æþurian. And today, Unity Day, is always our victory day for us all.

May the Gods bless Æþurheim.

Black Gold Bankrolls Economy!

Image
These Kraken Industriell platforms, built only two years ago, are already producing billions of gallons of crude oil a year

Since the adoption of the Share the Wealth Act and the following political backlash, the opening and expansion of the domestic oil market to allow foreign markets to purchase has resulted in Æþurian oil traveling across Tyran to fuel power stations, vehicles and refineries in distant lands. Needless to say, the surplus has been harnessed and turned back to an economic strength, as even fighting inflation gasoline prices fall to three merke a gallon from the dreaded four merke mark of last year. Companies like Statoil and Kraken Industriell continue to push agendas and funding towards both surveys and construction permits further and further north, seeking to exploit the wealth of our waters like never before.

Flaskevei Parti officials continue to applaud this work of mercantilism and commercialist success, while Folkefellesskap representatives decry it as the corruption of the Æþurian soul and the eventual enslavement of its people to foreign markets. Only time will tell what the outcome will be, but this reporter was happy to interview Svinian economic expert [CONT ON Pg 3]

CSN Naval Wargames to Begin

Image
Select Krigsmarine vessels like the RMS Uovervindelige will soon meet with Ossorian and Svinian counterparts to train in SUMPAC exercises

It’s no secret that our naval power has waxed and waned since the Great War, when we were arguably at our mightiest. But politics and circumstance have dictated our former enemies become our friends, and as a result today’s Krigsmarine is slimmed down and streamlined, focused more on killing power and protection of trade lanes than possessing massive capital ships like Ossoria and Cacerta. This has ceased to be a problem through the Commonwealth of Sovereign Nations, and the strengthening of those coordinated efforts is one of HIGHKOM’s top priorities. While we cannot disclose the exact date of the exercises or how many vessels will take part, the crucial timing of these exercises every year ensures that our strategies mesh with those employed by our strategic partners and allies.

“The importance of coordination does not just stop at tactics,” remarked Løytnantsjef Agnes Vangen, the SUMPAC officer assigned to handle our interview. “We have to consider logistics. What kind of fuel do all these ships burn? What kind of munitions do they fire, what kind of medical gear is used, what kind of batteries in radios. It’s why the CSN entrusted Æþurheim as the producer of common gear for all Commonwealth members, but it's also why Ossoria was trusted to streamline and commonize naval equipment and production.”

After the SUMPAC exercises end, we will be treated to declassified information and play by play action to track how the wargames go for our military enthusiasts, though be warned our wellspring of data does have its limits.

NCP, FP party leaders announce refusal to support light blue government
29 July 2022

In a press conference today, the leaders of the National Cooperative Party and Future Party announced their refusal to support a light blue-led government.

Mizuki Kōhara and Momoka Nishimura stated that both their parties are unwilling to support a government led by the United Reform Party.

Momoka stated that the Future Party is uncomfortable with collaborating with the right.

Mizuki criticised URP leader Liana Ferrari personally, stating that there was "no trust" between them.

The announcement is expected to significantly upend negotiations to form a government when the 24th Assembly is sworn in.

Mizuki Kōhara becomes the new Prime Minister
1 September 2022

Mizuki Kōhara has taken office as Prime Minister and formed a new cabinet.

The appointment took place at the end of a dramatic series of votes in the National Assembly.

United Reform Party leader Liana Ferrari was first designated by President Masako Owada to form a government. Their proposal was defeated with 135 votes in favour, 253 against, and 12 abstentions.

Socialist Party leader Keizō Takai was next designated. Their proposal was defeated with 176 votes in favour, 135 against, and 89 abstentions.

President Masako next prepared to designate Communist Party leader Rise Takashima to form a government, before National Cooperative Party leader Mizuki announced that they would be able to form one.

Mizuki proposed a coalition of the National Cooperative Party, Communist Party, Future Party, Green Party, and National Union, which could rely on outside support either from the independent MNAs or the Socialist Party.

The Socialist Party voted in favour of the proposal, giving the government a majority, as did the independent MNAs. The final tally was 265 votes in favour and 135 against.

In her first speech after inauguration, Mizuki declared that their government's priorities would be economic democracy, just transition, and a steady-state economy.

New congress will be hung, exit polls show

> New Democracy loses 2 seats but alliance may end up with exactly the same number of seats

Cleiden • According to exit polls published by Crafton House this afternoon, Chancellor Marc Parak of New Democracy may have led his party to the victory of two fewer seats in the House of Representatives in an election he called five weeks earlier, and its main alliance partners in government Green and Centre are each expected to pick up one seat from none other than New Democracy.

Parak's office has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Given no substantial changes in the political landscape, the new Congress is expected to be hung "with good confidence", according to Prof. K. Mimato of the University of Advora.

Parak called a snap election on September 29, citing what he called a growing public body of opinion that demands rapid action on infrastucture and climate goals; by this act, the House of Representatives will be dissolved three years ahead of its maximally five-year term, and the House of Prelates will be sent home pending elections in the states.

However, it seems the Chancellor's body of opinion has failed to materialize at the polls, though at no large loss to his party.

Trismari Kimmuriia, the leader of the Social Alliance and head of the official opposition, has called the election an unnecessary waste of public time and resource, for effectively no change in government. New Democracy's loss of two seats, located in Sthura and Kimma, has been assessed by her as a polite reprimand against excessive elections.

She has demanded the governing alliance instead work more proactively with the opposition, and act with at least the intention of making inter-party co-operation possible, rather than leaping to the public at every opportunity.
