It seems so, though this is only the down payment, the full bill is yet to come.

We likely would have had at least 70,000 dead no matter who was President simply because of how ass backwards our politics are, how fast this virus advanced, just how many old people we have, and the subpar state of our healthcare system.
That still adds a good 30,000+ to Trump and the constant infighting the US has because of him.

It's not even done yet either. People are still dying.

Looks like the US is looking at a similar death rate to the last two major Chinese based viral outbreaks that became a Pandemic.
US lost around 100,000 to the Hong Kong Flu and around 70,000 to 116,000 to the 1958 Flu outbreak.

I’ve been wondering why nothing why nothing was shut down during those two pandemics. Woodstock was held in 1968 an event that changed music forever

I guess we'll be lucky if we don't pass the latter mark.... Here's "Hoping".

If we were to follow what they did during those two pandemics, we would have by far more deaths, especially since we have a larger older population now then we did 50-60 years ago. Different times call for different measures and to ignore these key differences and say "hey look, the numbers are similar to these other pandemics" is honestly disingenuous.

We're bound to hit WWI levels. Let's try to keep it under WWII.

Maybe then those older people need to self-isolate while this runs its course? I don't really see any logical reason why we should lock down everyone else who isn't vulnerable for their sake.

Exactly. This is what angers me so much about this whole situation...we know who is vulnerable but have consistently and repeatedly failed to take action to protect these people. Lock down nursing homes and LTC care facilities, ban visits, test employees and residents repeatedly, prioritize equipment in order to protect those people....the rest of us can weather this without any real consequences and when the storm passes lift the restrictions as the mortality rate for people under 65 is essentially negligible.
Make it abundantly clear that if you interact closely with older people and go out stay away from them until this is past. I have a higher chance of dying from a car accident than COVID but that doesn't mean I'm going to head out to the nursing home for a visit afterward.
FFS, Cuomo was flat out executing people in these nursing homes by forcing them to take infected patients.
