It was not often that King Jakub would make his way from the palace to the Stade de Torgos, but with a light schedule this month, he had set aside some time to take his children to see a Wanderers' match. The entire family traveled with him, with his lovely wife Veronika as well as his sons Dražen and Dominik, as well as the youngest in his daughter Petra. They had their own suite in the stadium, it would normally be filled with other high members of the government or of the PFA, usually the latter trying to clamor for more funding, however he had kept the suite for just his family as well as a few friends for this visit. In a move to help alleviate the PFA numerous requests for more funds, he had given them approval to set up a series of home friendlies against high profile competition that was estimated to bring in over a hundred million ducats, which would cover their running costs for at least two years. Unfortunately, Jakub had read that the team had performed poorly in the series, with the lasting image of the team being thoroughly outplayed by the World Cup holders and hosts of the edition that this qualifier was for.

It was a sunny afternoon in Torgos today and the stadium seemed packed despite the Wanderers' poor performances of late, as he had read that the squad fell flat in their opener against Baptism of Fire champions Mavinet, a result that seemed to have shook the supporters quite a bit. The stadium normally would have been a deafening mess for a home opener of the qualifiers, and though while it was quite loud there was a different atmosphere than what the king was used to when he did make the trips to see the team in person. He fondly remembered when his adoptive mother had brought him to that first Wanderers' game nearly thirty years ago, shortly after he had been adopted into the family. That was when the Wanderers' were in their prime, under the leadership and example of Tobias Möller, though it was towards the end of his player career. The team then was vying with Osarius for World Cup titles and the Stade de Torgos was so loud on matchdays that one could hardly hear ones thoughts, such was how loud the singing and cheering was from the ninety thousand fans who had packed into the stadium. Now, he could hear his own thoughts and the chatter of his family with their guests.

Jakub watched the game unfold and looked at the team and how they played, at how the the matchday program described the team and he wondered if the team out on the field was representative of Pasarga as a whole right now. The nation had come out of their modernization looking a nation for the modern era but it seemed to be lacking some of its soul that had seemingly slipped away during the modernization period, that their allies in Eura had helped them through. The team out there on the field was filled with talented players through and through but that gritty determination and strength in the midfield that used to be the staple of Wanderers' squads was missing. Jakub wondered if there was a parrell in there somewhere, that for all the polish that was on the surface, if through their changing for what was they better that they had lost that little bit of something that had made themselves special? The squad was going through the motions and putting in a good performance, with their star strikers each getting a goal, Jager grabbing a brace as the second goal sealed the game up after seventy-three minutes, but there was something missing.

It was not his place to worry that greatly about the national team though, that is why there was the PFA to begin with. His worry was for that of his family and then the nation, the former of which seemed to have enjoyed themselves greatly with big smiles as the Wanderers' did a victory lap of applause after the match had concluded. He hoped that his children would come to remember experiences like this fondly the same way that he had with his mothers when they had brought him to such occasions. One day one of the three of them would be chosen to be the next monarch of the dual islands and help navigate it through the ever changing world. Happy memories like these were the ones that they would have to lean on to get them through the trying times, he certainly had during economic and political turmoil that had come during the modernization. There were still some both within and outside the dual islands that wanted to see the monarchy toppled completely even after the efforts to extend democracy further in the country. That was a worry for years later yet, for now he instead would focus on another happy memory made with his family and privately hope that both the nation and the national team would grow and thrive even under the pressures that were forced upon them.

Zeta Reka & Hügeltaldom Federativna Republika Zeta Reka i Hügeltaldom
World Cup 85 Web Report Issue 3
Geektopia hosted the elite Rekan’s players who looked hungry for more points. The team was down early, but as defense solidified, the Rekans took advantage of every opportunity given, and were able to grind out a draw.

Backup goalkeeper Zlatko Wukowić came into the fray with a few good saves on the day. “I was impress by their players” he said to the press, avoiding irrelevant questions about Zeta Reka’s police. The low block did enough to keep a second goal away, but the lack of cohesion is something the coaches will need to work on. In this tournament a new assist coach was pulled from Division 2, and that is how sportswriters are explaining the defense’s sloppy early positioning. “I stand by my staff” Coach Dusan said when confronted with the idea. He continued, “I will not scapegoat anyone on the team, it just took us time to warm up.”

The attack today was snuffed out. Geektopia’s seven defenders and midfielders outnumbered Zeta Reka’s five midfielders and solo forward, “It was a major challenge” team captain Rybki said online, “Almost no fouls, major respect.” It took fresh legs up front to score at the eighty sixth minute. Rybki missed a chance, but Hokwok scored on the counter. After a few minutes, the Rekans were able to take home a point. Taking two points away form a higher ranked opponent was cause for celebration in the locker room, but the mood was serious, as a higher rated opponent awaits.

The roster for Cosumar will be primarily starters. Wladmir Bogdanić will return to the team after his suspension. Stani Gröss, the backup defensive midfielder, suffered a minor muscle injury and will sit out a few matches for club and country. Želmir Kolarowić is expected to start for the team. He had good chemistry with the other midfielders and will add a bit of flare to the team. The Rekans have a lot of history to battle when playing against footballers from any of Cosumar 21 fiefs. Marko Dusan has been confident in the media about the game, “I think we take the points, they won 5-2, but we’ll beat that other team too.” A win would put the world on notice, and maybe even put the team at the top of the group. Many are hoping for that result, but evenyone will find out what happens in due time.

Jerome Jaffacake-Phillips was not a happy man. True, he was somewhat less furious than a week ago, when they'd basically bent over and clenched for Omerica's second string, but no points from two matches was not a good look for the man the KFA had painted as the saviour of the national side. He scanned through Bromham newspaper The Southerner, before discarding it into a pile that already contained today's Post, Avidia Lantern, and Cy'Un. That last one had particularly hurt; his own father-in-law stating he looked "as lost as he did defending corners" on the touchline cutting particularly deep.

Cleo was, apparently, on her way to chew her old man out on that one.

"Chin up, boss." Paul Davis came walking into Jerome's office. "Things could be worse. We can drill the lads over the next few days - we have a blank fixture day, after all - then we can give Newmanistan a good kicking. Cyan pride, and all that."
Jerome scowled. "Bloody optimist. We're two games in, the media's already circling like vultures, you think three points will melt that away? We got owned by a team that expected to lose so hard they didn't even bother with their starters!"
"May only be three points, boss," Paul interjected, "but it's a foundation. We've got twenty-two games to prove these people wrong. We just need to get off the mark, get that confidence flowing in the team. Speaking of which..."
Paul passed a parcel over to Jerome, which he gingerly opened.

Inside was a full length trenchcoat, in navy blue with sky blue lining. On one side of the chest, carefully embroidered, was the KFA emblem; on the other, the letters "JJP" picked out in fancy cursive writing.
"You wanna be the business, you gotta look the business."
Jerome looked in the mirror. "I look like my pa."
"A smarter, younger version, maybe. But Jeremy has a prescence. He swishes in with his coat on, you know he's there. It's a little intimidating. You, in that? Give it a bit of swagger in your walk and you'll have people eating out of the palm of your hand."
"I dunno, Paul..."
"What, exactly, do you have to lose?"
Jerome looked into the mirror. He turned, and the coat swished behind in the same direction. He smiled, and reached for something on the desk. "Yeah, you're right. Just needs one more thing."

Jerome put on the shades he'd just picked up, and swaggered to the door.
"Time to rock and roll, bitches."
"I revel in the nonsense; it's why I'm in Anaia."

The Road to World Cup 85 Edition

MATCHDAY 2 MATCH REPORT

Mattijana 3 - 2 Port Ember

The Port Emberian National Football Team, nicknamed the Dragons, came up short and lost their first match of their World Cup 85 Qualifier Campaign against the Mattijana national side during Match Day 2.

This match was the first encounter between these two teams in history, and took place within the Mattijana National Stadium, situated within the capital city of the Socialist Federation of Mattijana

The Match

The match was a constantly hard fought game with neither side affording their opponents a moment to catch a breath, and was a true nail-biting derby.

The first half came to an end with Port Ember trailing 2 - 1 who clearly struggled to keep the opposition's offence at bay and struggling to launch an effective offense themselves, only managing to do so once in minute 27, with Striker Leon Moult delivering a beautifull goal when Port Ember managed to spring their signature Bait Ambush counter attack.

The second half commenced with the opposition quickly scoring again in minute 51, putting a massive hole on the scoreboard, Port Ember trailing 3 - 1.

This last goal seemed to frighten the Dragons into action and they quickly started dominating the match, lauching continious attacks without letting up. The attacks seemed impressive and showed a different side to this young team. This onslaught paid off when proper team work between the star midfielder and strikers - Leon Moult and Danny Nicovic allowed a surgical strike to land, closing the gap of the score to a narrow 3 - 2 in minute 76. Unfortunately time ran out for Port Ember and the final whistle brought the match to a unsattisfying end.

What can be said about the Dragons which was not allready said before? Our team is young, hungry and talented. They have tasted qualification during the previous cycle, and have just tasted bronze during the IAC9. They will be looking to steamroll from early on in this competition to build momentum. The first match day win was a good start, however they performed quite terrible and picked up a loss as result during Match Day 2.

Their next campaign was when they partook in the latest rendition of the Wonder Cup, where they managed to score one win and 2 losses, dropping out in the Group Stages of the Cup, finishing in third place of the group (out of 4 teams). Fast forward to the current World Cup 85 Qualifiers, they have lost both of their played matches so far, albeit in hotly contested matches against Atheist Democratic Freehold in Match Day 1 and against heavyweights Ko-oren in Match Day 2.

An Analyst's Input - How do we win this one?!?

"Well if we look at both teams on paper, it's clear to me that our own national team is supposed to be having a field day - a picknic actually - yet the same could have been said for our match against Mattijana, yet we lost due to losing focus and once again becoming too cocky for our own good. This seems to be the major cause for our losses lately. Our team needs to hunker down and focus on the basics, and remain focused. We need to play our normal game - but with the passion which have brought us this far so quickly, and we will be okay." - Gerhard Black, Football Analyst and Journalist for Port Ember Times.

With that all said - I personally wish our lads the best of luck for the upcoming match - Make us Proud!!!

The Road to World Cup 85 Edition

SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR FOOTBALL TOURISTS

This article is written specifically for the foreign tourists who intends to visit the Republic of Port Ember in order to support their national teams competing against our own Dragons as part of the World Cup 85 Qualification Campaign.

Firstly - Welcome (or rather almost?) to the Republic of Port Ember! The land of the free, the drunk and the rich. Just to set your mind at ease, the title is just a shot at humor as one does not really need a survival guide to visit the Republic, it's a safe and fun place to visit actually. But this will serve as a sort of heads up however, as the Republic's unique culture will catch you offgaurd if not prepared. Port Ember is a tropical archipelago nation which is rooted in hundreds of years of pirate, smuggling and maritime trade culture and history, which still holds a profound impact on modern life. Near absolute liberty is one of the surviving elements forged from our history, and can be daunting for those folk who is not used to such high levels of freedom, so best be mentally prepared!

Port Emberian Laws. Port Emberian Common Law is shaped with the concept of absolute liberty and free will, which is held to sacred levels by every citizen. The following laws is in effect which may surprise you if not prepared:
- Absence of Public Decency Laws
The Republic has no promulgated Public Decency Laws, thus it is legal to appear fully naked within public places. Now due to the climate and actual human decency, this is not a common occurance - but it does happen. So if you see a nude person in the streets, don't be surprised! It's fine to 'see' and 'appreciate' but not fine to actively stare.
- Vice Laws
Port Ember is known as the "Sin Islands" by propagandists due to alchohol, gambling, prostitution and recreational drugs being completely legal and easy to come by. Whatever your vice which might be outlawed or looked down upon in your home country - it's legal, cheap and easily obtainable here!
- Firearm Laws
Firearms (Any!) are legal to be bought, owned and carried by any adult citizen of Port Ember, so do not be alarmed when you observe many citizens who is concealing a firearm. Tourists are not allowed to carry a firearm however.
- Adulthood
Once any person is 16 years of age or older, whether a citizen or a tourist, they are considered adults and are free to do whatever they want, when they want, with whom they want.

Port Ember Megalopolis. There are four major urban area's located on the Ember Archipelago, however this article will only briefly cover the capital and largest city, as all the games will take place here. Port Ember Megalopolis is a gigantic super city, consisting out of 8 Boroughs (where each one is as large as most modern cities by itself), and has a population of about 1 billion people. The sheer size can be daunting to first time visitors so I will attempt to ease the shellshock feeling!
- Weather. Port Ember is a tropical archipelago located within the Northern Ocean geographical region and thus posesses a tropical climate. It's hot and humid every day, year round (38° celcius average and 96% humidity). Almost without fail, the entire area gets showered with heavy rainfall between 15:00 - 1600 on a daily basis.
- Lilly Black Borough. Of the eight Boroughs, let's focus on the one where you will spend most - if not all your time - the Lilly Black Borough. This Borough is situated roughly in the center of the Megalopolis and is a very beautiful borough, with hundreds of green areas and natural parks. This Borough also houses the entire Government of the Republic and all foreign embassies. Most importantly for you however is the fact that it houses the Lilly Black Memorial Stadium.
- Ports of Entry. There are many ports of entry into the Republic, but the easiest (in this scenario) would be the Lilly Black International Airport, if traveling in by air or the Ember Port if traveling in by ship. However of you enter via the port you will need to travel 100km to get to the Lilly Black Borough.
- Accommodation. This Borough is a popular destination for foreign businesses folk and tourists alike, thus accommodation is easily and widely available. There are options available for all tastes and budgets. 5 Star Hotels, 4 Star Hotels, 3 Star Hotels, Guesthouses, Guestrooms, Lodges, Motels and Bacpackers are dotted all over the Borough. Please contact the Port Emberian Toursim Bureau to find your appropriate lodging.
- Transport. Transport to and fro the stadium and elsewhere is quite simple and affordable. There are thousands of registered meter taxis stalking the streets at every hour, Call a Ride Services are available via mobile apps, car rentals are affordable and wide spread (remember we drive on the left!), and the bullet train metro service is world class (and it's free!!).
- What to do before/after the game? Well the Megalopolis is a international city and popular tourist attraction (remember the vice laws!), so in short - whatever you can think of! There are thousands of pubs, bars, taverns, casino's, restaurants, clubs, brothels, cabarets, movie theaters, museums, concert halls, shopping malls, art galleries, zoo's, natural parks, botanical gardens, pools, beaches, open air markets and much much more available. Again please contact the Port Emberian Toursim Bureau to find the highest rated venue for your specific needs.

Food & Drink. Owing to the fact that Port Ember Megalopolis is and always has been a major international trading port, all imaginable food and drink from across the globe has found a place within the legion of restaurants and markets of the city. It's quite possible to get a taste of the entire world within one place! Now if you are specifically looking forward to get a taste of proper Port Emberian cuisine, you are in for a treat. Owing to the culture, history and geography, traditional Port Emberian cuisine is heavily shaped by seafood, tropical fruit and wild boar. The following is a few dishes you simply must try if you are planning on tasting the best of the local options:
- Seafood Wrap. This is a delicious and filling meal on it's own. It's a soft rolled flatbread filled with a mixture of various seafood and diced tropical fruits. It comes in 'plain' and spicey - but beware the spicey is REALLY spicey!
- Barbaro. Barbaro is a blanket term for wild boar meat of all cuts and sizes which is prepared on an open fire. Its marinated in a variety of sauces (most commonly sweet chili, honey mustard or fruit chutney) before being grilled.
- Viando de Maristo. Literal translation is 'Mariner's Meat'. It is a form of dried, cured meat that originated in Port Ember around the 1400's, specifically for long ocean voyages, which has become a true treat and snack in modern society. Various types of meat are used in its production, ranging from beef, wild boar to a wide variety of deer. Fillets of the chosen raw meat is cut into strips and then spiced with salt, vinegar and a special mixture of other flavoring spices. This strips is then dried in a dark room or in a purpose build cupboard for a few days.
- Donny. The Donny is a proper "street food" which originated in the industrial areas of the Megalopolis during the industrial boom in the 1930's. It's a half loaf of bread which is hollowed out and then stuffed with 'whipped chips' (which is chunky and soft potato fries doused in salt and vinegar, pineapple, diced boar meat (sometimes replaced with fish) and cheese.
- Fish & Chips. This dish was originally brought with the English settlers during the 1700's, however a few unique twists has made this to become a truly unique and iconic traditional staple. Fish (usually hake or salmon) is deep fried in a maize crust which itself is first infused with a batch of indigenous spices. This is then served with 'whipped chips'.
- Flavoured Milk. The ultimate non alcoholic beverage of choice which just screams 'traditional' is flavoured milk. It's sold in sizes ranging from soda can size to 2 litres jumbo bottles, in any flavour imaginable - although chocolate remains the best seller.
- Port Emberian Rum. It can be said that Port Ember as the powerhouse today was build with Port Emberian rum as its foundation, due to the immense wealth it brought in export sales since the 1700's, and offcourse because it's the drink of choice for the majority of the blue collar workers who propelled the nation into the industrial age. Honestly nothing is more Port Emberian than a proper native rum and every visitor needs to enjoy at least one tankard whilst in town.
- Port Emberian Beer. Port Emberian beer does not hold the same rich history as rum, but is still considered a proud Port Emberian tradition. The craft beer scene exploded in the 1950's and is a ever growing market to this day, with its frothy liquid being exported to all corners of the globe.

The Average Port Emberian It's difficult to provide our reader with a definitive guide on what to expect when interacting with the local populace, as two billion people will obviously cover all possible character traits imaginable, whether a common background is shared or not. However, I will stick to stereotypes here to give you a sense of what to possibly expect.
- Feelings towards foreigners. Port Ember has always been a nation whom focused on international trade and that has not changed today. Due to the nations rich history and culture of international trade, the acceptance and understanding of foreign people and cultures are well ingrained on the locals, and generally are always warm and welcoming towards foreigners.
- Feelings towards the LGBTQ community. Port Ember is one of the few nations who has never had a problem with the LGBTQ community and has never had any sort of laws which prohibited same sex marriage or any other discrimination laws.
- Language Spoken The Republic has two official languages - English and Esperanto, both of which every native citizen can speak fluently as its mandatory education languages. English is used for normal day to day communication whilst Esperanto is seen as the "doing business" language.
- About Religion. The main religion practiced within the Republic is known as Port Emberian Shinto and a lifestyle of convening with spirits and paying homage to once ancestors. The religion itself holds no Creation Myth or One Deity belief, which makes the believers very accepting towards any other religious teachings. The only gripe a Port Emberian might possibly have is with religious extremism due to a civil war which was raged in the 1960's started by a group of Christian Extremists Terrorists. But in general, the populace welcome all religions to their shores with open arms.
- Port Emberian Football Fans. The fans of the nation can be considered almost fanatical. The sport is still a very youn one and their team is rapidly rising through the international ranks, thus ego is very much a part of the team spirit.

That ladies & gentlemen is the condensed Survival Guide to Port Ember. I sincerely hope you will have a memorable visit to our tropical island and enjoy the upcoming qualifiers!

Waldster

The First Kit
Image

The very first team in the nation, they played the inaugural game in 89BU in a plain yellow shirt and black trousers. Of course much of the kit technology has changed since those days, but the basic colour template has served Waldster for well over a century now. This kit will also be associated with the first professional game of football in Waldster.

Celebrated Classic
Image

Waldster traditionally favoured much plainer kits, even when more patterned kits were beginning to take off. The 19BU kit however was voted as a fan favourite. A relatively simple design, the main feature is the clever W-like shape on the perimeter of the collar of the kit. A design that quintessentially personified Waldster, provided a good visual identity, and looked very smart. Several variants of it have existed down the years, to varying levels of success.

Modern Marvel
Image

The 11AU recreation of the W-collar has been voted the fan favourite of the classic era. It keeps a lot of the features of the classic version of this kit, but dials it up with a modern twist, and adds a bit more trim. Maybe not the most celebrated kit in the “Modern Marvel” category, but a look that did well for the club.

Colour of Success
Image

22AU is the year chosen, as Waldster completed a domestic treble in that year, managed by former Flavovespia National Team manager and Waldster’s current manager, Nick Cole. Most of the black trim ran down the sleeves from the collar, in an angled shape. A splash of black trim was applied to the bottom of the shirt, and shorts and socks were black with a touch of yellow on them. The kit itself is somewhat average in terms of looks, but will always be remembered for that historic season in the capital.

Fashion Disaster
Image

The later classic era saw some odd design choices, and Waldster were no exception in 12BU. The odd “shredded” effect, which was supposed to resemble a W just didn’t work, and the odd asymmetry was a fad of its time. Add to that, a shadow fade design manufactured into the kit meant there was just too much going on. The kit itself wasn't worn in a particularly successful period for Waldster, adding to its general dislike. This certainly won't be the last kit of this year though to be featured in this article.
Formerly the Republic of Greater Waldster, internationally known as Greater Watford. IC It's a long story (OOC I didn't like using real place names)

THUNDER ROLLS PAST MELBERGIA

After earning a big draw against South Covello in a very non-entertaining but extremely satisfying manner, West Pocono would head to the road to play Melbergia. This opponent also had an opening day draw, a 2-2 result against A Flock Of Seagulls. Sadly, we do not know much about the flock as of yet, as their roster has not been provided. Are they actual seagulls? Extra large seagulls? Or just a group of humans that come from a nation that is called that for whatever reason? Not knowing that certainly hampered Melbergia for their pre-game preparation, and now everyone can at least look at the game tapes to know what they are dealing with when they take on the flock. We won’t be playing them for quite some time.

Melbergia is another nation that has not let the world know who is playing for them as of yet, therefore leaving their people to play in complete obscurity. The defensive approach of the Poconi would again be the order of the day, and even though Melbergia is not anywhere near as good as South Covello, our defense was tested more by Melbergia in the early stages. They were up for it, keeping the Melbergia attack contained to angles on the pitch where they could not get a great opportunity on Jeremy Burgess. In the 33rd minute, the home side brought a couple extra people forward on the attack, and this proved to be costly as the defense sniffed out the play beautifully. Hubert Irizarry delivered a fantastic long ball forward to Sean Beliveau, and the Thunder had numbers in their favor on the attack. Ultimately, a Beliveau pass to Damian Golden was also perfect, and fired it home, into the left corner, giving the Thunder the 1-0 lead, and the first goal scored by the team since World Cup 51 qualifiers. Officially, it came in the 34th minute.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Poconi at halftime, and playing with a lead, this team was extra dangerous. There was no need for them to take any aggressive chances, as they waited for Melbergia to make mistakes. Burgess did have to make a couple of clutch stops, but he has been on good form early in the tournament. Eventually, Melbergia was caught again trying to send extra people forward, coming in the 72nd minute. The goal scorer here was Garrett Conroy, and with the two goal advantage, West Pocono was content to prioritize their defense. Melbergia had ball possession, but did not do much with it, taking low percentage shots way too often. Those were forced by the defensive work of the Thunder, and they were all the stars of the game.

Next on the agenda for West Pocono is a home tilt against Freeport.

ELEPHANT VALLEY MAIL
Sports -> Soccer
South Newlandia gets bashed in Pasarga

South Newlandia played their first away-game, after winning on matchday one against Tamgu, in Pasarga. The Wanderers, 2nd seed of the group and ranked 25th world-wide, proved to be a number too big for South Newlandia. The Elephants never really had a chance.

Pasarga 3-1 South Newlandia

Trusting in the defense that conceded three goals against Tamgu might have proved to be a mistake, as the South Newlandian defense seemed shaky from the start. As early as the 2nd minute, Pasargan Right Midfield Jan Gersten overplayed Dhruv Roy on the left South Newlandian defense side. Gersten played a nice flank in, and Alexander Jager shot the ball into the goal volley past a perplexed Mikhail Trischuk. This was the earliest goal the Elephants had ever conceded, and you could read in on the players’ faces. This was certainly not the start they hoped for.

It got only worse, as the 13th minute had another great chance for the Wanderers. Raphael Moreno saw no option but pull a foul against Mária Vöröss, earning him a yellow card and a free kick for Pasarga. Alexander Jager took the ball, but his dangerous shot was barely directed around the goal by Mikhail Trischuk, keeping the Elephants in the game.

The Wanderers remained in complete control of the game. A nice attack after a good pass by Szalyk Földessy to Júlia Müller got her one on one with Mikhail Trischuk, as Jack Schroeder was completely overplayed. Müller tried to place the ball into the bottom corner, but Trischuk got his foot on the ball just in time to clear the ball out of the way.

The first 25 minutes did not see a single shot from the Elephants, but rather another chance for the Wanderers. This time, it was Tommy Anderson who saw no way to stop Jan Gerstan but to pull his tricot. He got a yellow card as well, and Jager got himself another free kick. This time, he hit the ball even better, and Mikhail Trischuk didn’t reach the ball, and the only reason Pasarga didn’t score was the crossbar.

It took until the 29th minute for South Newlandia to have their first shot on goal. Brandon Irving decided to try for a goal from 35 metres distance, but that was probably one of the easiest shots Ambrus Galambos faced in a while.

The Wanderers stayed the stronger team, getting another good chance in the 42nd minute. This time, it was once again Maria Vöröss pulling through the centre. Júlia Müller had played herself free, fooling Tommy Anderson, and had another chance, one-on-one against Trischuk. This time, she got the ball past Trischuk, but the ball bounced out of the game from the post.

It was half-time now, and the Elephants were so far looking at a devastating performance and a score of 0-1. Clearly, something had to be done, and Robert Wolverine decided to make two changes. He really could have taken out all players, except maybe for Trischuk, but he decided to settle on replacing Tommy Anderson and Patrick McMora. He brought Manuel O’Neill and Jarod Stuart into the match, and Stuart got his international debut. Something has to be said about the Pasargan fans, too. After reports from Mavinet suggesting Pasargan fans were quite rude there and generally causing trouble, we have spoken to South Newlandian fans who made the trip to Pasarga, and all of them claimed that the perceived the Pasargans as very nice and sportsmanlike. It seems like the Pasargans are some pretty nice folks, but like in every community, there are some black sheep there as well.

O’Moore managed to get the South Newlandian defense in some control, but Pasarga was still better. In the 59th minute, Mária Vöröss made another run down the left flank. Raphael Moreno tried to stop her, but he was way too late on his tackling. Vöröss fell, and the referee was coming with Moreno’s second yellow card, subsequently sending him off the pitch. Vöröss could play on, but Pasarga seemed even more confident with one more on the pitch.

Nothing happened for almost 15 minutes except for Wolverine exchanging Brandon Irving with Ricardo Rayner in the 71st minute. Two minutes later, another foul got Pasarga another free kick in dangerous position. Jager was determent not to miss the chance this time, and he got the ball behind Trischuk now. After the 2-0, the game seemed over now.

In the 78th minute, hope returned to the Elephants when Simon McCabe received a good pass from Corban Green, and managed to curve around Ambrus Galambos. With the 1-2, South Newlandia could go for more, and subsequently, they started pushing and playing more offensively.

Playing offensively has its drawbacks, and in the 89th minute, Alexander Jager was using some of the open room he was getting. A perfectly timed pass to Júlia Müller got her one on one with Trischuk again, and this time, Müller had all the time she needed to score the 3-1.

That was it, and South Newlandia lost clearly to Pasarga in their second game. The Elephants were clearly outclassed in every aspect, and the loss was much deserved. Coach Robert Wolverine will have to ask himself if this can continue against Eraman.

Starters against Eraman
Image
Wolverine is changing no fewer than six players compared to the game in Pasarga.
Three changes are made on defense. Moreno isn’t allowed to play because of his red card, and Wolverine decided to give O’Moore and Meyer the starts as Centre Backs. Barnaby Hastings will play as Right Back.
On midfield, Faisal Harworth gets his first start as well as Bishop in offensive midfield. Mohamed and Wallis will watch from the side when the game starts.
Brandon Irving does not get the start this time, as Ricardo Rayner is back in the starting formation.

Striker Masada Katano and midfielder Arihiro Hoshi were on the scoresheet as Kandorith turns the second qualification match to a win for the Lotus Warriors as they fought for a 2 - 1 victory over Lo Santano in the away match yesterday. A victory the fans and manager Hayabusa were hoping for, but it the match did not go down without a fight. In a rare display Kandorith managed to get four yellow cards in a single match. "They fought for every inch and were determined to keep control and secure the lead. We fought fire with fire." Hayabusa said.

With a mostly rotated squad to rest the main players, the Kandorese team managed to show an impressive display of controlled and agile football. Even more unorthodox Hayabusa picked the youngest players in the squad in the starting eleven, including 19 year old Hikoshige Matsushita from Takamoto, a rising star in Kandorese football and surely many eyes will be looking at him for a future signing now. This was Takamoto's second appearance for the national team ever and made quite the impression. with speed and agility he dribbled across the field with ease, tiring the opposition out with his constant and quick successive passes.

"Our aim is to reach the World Cup of course and from there we can decide the further future of the team, including the younger players. Of course I want the young players to get as much experience as possible, but sometimes you just have to go for the players who have been on the field for years on end. I think with what Takamoto has shown us today was extraordinary and I absolutely get what his loyal fans see in his playstyle. I think if he works hard he could even shape the future of the Kandorese football style." Hayabusa commented after the match. "He has amazing ability and field overview, almost like an eagle soaring over the field. He is not just watching his own play and the player in front of him, he watches the entire team move as a collective. We need players like him and with the Kandorese football becoming ever more popular there is no end in the arrival of young talent.

I think players like Takamoto and Ishibashi will start shaping the team already in the qualifiers if they can keep up this form and stature. I am heavily impressed by their performance and so is the entire team."

Hayabusa said about the two youngsters who started in the match. Ishibashi plays for the surprising Higaku Antlers who snatched a third place in the domestic cup this year. The Antlers are known to be a mid-tier team with barely any big names in their squad but are also known to have extremely talented players that truly shine on the field and in their love for football. Ishibashi is one of those players and is on the analysts "to-watch" list, just like Takamoto.

With these young players and a hopeful Hayabusa, Kandorith has a simple and single goal: to compete for qualification for the World Cup and shake the foundation of the world of football. Hayabusa is also set to become the first manager to lead the Kandorese football team for two consecutive tournaments in the entire history of the nation.

"When I heard my contract was up for renewal I hesitated at first, because I thought I would leave my spot open for a new vision." Hayabusa commented. "But then I remembered that I started building this team just after the 84th World Cup campaign failure. I have to finished what I started else I would basically abandon the team, the players and my country. My goal is not just winning every match but it is also winning the hearts of the Kandorese people with and for football. As long as I can remember traditional sports and martial arts have dominated the Kandorese sporting venues and football is so much bigger and different than those.

Honestly I think football fits with our Empire perfectly. Every country has their own style of play and their own distinctive looks and tactics. This is where we come in, Kandorith has not been a large football nation but is slowly becoming one. We are the shake up the world needs and I think this team under my leadership is the little nudge or perhaps even the avalanche our country needs to truly become a footballing nation. When I was younger my father took me to a football game of the now defunct Yamakita Frontale which was my very first meeting with the sport. It was magical. I think there were only 4,000 people watching the game in a small almost backyard stadium but the atmosphere made up for the at first look, somber looking place. Yamakita won that day for the first time of the season, where they were battling to avoid relegation to the third division, against their rivals from Yokomoto. That day I decided I wanted to start a career in football.

Apparently, I wasn't very good at playing football. But, I was excellent at looking at, explaining and imagining tactics for the team. As soon as a coaching opportunity opened for me I took it and I think it was four years later and I was coaching the Imakazawa Ravens, an absolute boy's dream. Where I failed in playing the game I repaid in becoming a manager in football. I aim for the best and I really think we are the best Kandorith has to offer. We do not only owe this to Kandorese football fans, I want to show the world we are to be taken seriously as a football nation."

Kandorith will play against the previous Cup of Harmony hosts Xanneria, a Cup of Harmony Kandorith has very fond memories about. Even Manager Hayabusa had a large smile on his face when asked about the upcoming match. "Xanneria is our next match who hosted the previous Cup of Harmony. I wonder however what their reception of us will be. I think we have to thank them for that amazing run we had. I mean I still think it was all a dream and we never made it to those quarter-finals. I do not doubt the fans will have something in store for them as an appreciation for that historic day, do not doubt it at all. I also do think this will be a tough match as they are the clear favourite in this match, but I think if we hold our stature we can defeat them." according to a very uplifted Hayabusa.

For the fans the match against Xanneria will be a special one, one they of course hope to win but it is also a match of remembrance. During the Cup of Harmony in Xanneria and Banija. It was at Houston, Tacoma's Air Force Veterans Memorial Stadium where Kandorese history would be written for ages to come and it would be in the Cunningham Family Stadium in Delano later on where the Kandorese heart was broken but not defeated in spirit. During interviews and on social media fans are very positive about facing Xanneria and are hoping for the feeling of the Cup of Harmony to return to their hearts, which right now is the greatest driving force behind the Kandorese team. Of course the match being a home game we expect Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Masumi to be among the spectators once again, as she regularilly is during home games of the national team.

It hasn't been a good start for the Ancherites and Paradisians. The team and fans went away saying the opponents name after a 3-3 draw against Noooooooooo, it was a poor performance and has led to questions being asked about the leadership of the national team and if the team are still able to play like they should be. Two goals from Sami Taylor and Herva Aydin gave the team the early lead and kept that until the second half where we conceded a goal in the 52nd minute. It didn't end there, in the 67th minute, Franchon Tyler was sent off after a tough challenge inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot whilst sending them off, after that incursion, the captain for Noooo took the spot kick and scored their second goal, sending Zenin to the opposite corner as he puts it in the left side.

With a man down, the match got increasingly difficult as time progressed, the opposition kept on pushing but with the sturdy defense and eventually it broke in the 81st minute. With a through ball sent over the Ancherite midfield into the defence, their striker took the ball and sent it into the back of the net. The match was impossible to win at this stage, however the draw was achieve with a last minute goal from Ali Roberts from a corner kick.

We then traveled to HUElavia for our second match which ended in a way which we expected in a theoretical way. The team played much better this match than the previous and managed to get two goals with the efforts of Taylor coming through. Ancherion are currently sitting in 9th place in the group out of 13 which is not a good place to be and with our next match is against the top seeds Equestria so hopefully the can get at least a point from this match to try and retain some hope of qualifying.

Welcome back to Sports with Bort. I'm your humble host, Bort Stevens. We're continuing our special report on Torisakia at World Cup 85, hosted by the wonderful Mriin and the stupendous Farfadillis. Due to some angry emails and a rock thrown through my window last night, I'm going to have to postpone my sellouts for the time being. I've received numerous complaints about my audience being bombarded with emails from SwiftShave and Webizy even when they didn't buy anything from them. I'm pretty certain this is because Grassnolewddick Media Networks, the owner of torisakiasports.tor and subsequently the owner of the Sports with Bort blog, sells their customers' information to the highest bidder. Unfortunately I have no control over this. They've sold my information as well. I have this chipper guy in a suit come by my house every other day trying to sell me an underground shelter for some nuclear war. So to hopefully circumvent this entire issue, I won't be doing anymore sponsorships for the time being. I may lose thousands of dollars due to the Soto Act, but I guess that's fine if it means it keeps my audience happy. I'll be fine when in three months time I'll be writing this blog for all of you when I'm living in a van down by the river.

Welp, looks like my posts just write themselves. I said at the end of the last post that I would either praise, ridicule, or praise and ridicule Torisakia depending on if they won, lost, or tied. There was a 33% chance for any of those to happen. And it just so happens that the "lost" situation happened. Yep, Torisakia lost against Drawkland 2-1 at Tokai Memorial yesterday. You may be thinking "But Bort, a 2-1 loss isn't that bad. It's a 26 match qualifier, one loss won't hurt us that bad", and you're right, quite right. What I said at the end of the last post was just a joke. You see, I'm only pretending to be unreasonable. I decided whether I'm joking or not depending on the reactions of my audience. And since most of you didn't like what I said, I'm now going to say I was only joking. Understand? Great. Despite the loss, it wasn't a bad game played by the Ice Birds. What hurt us the most was losing Syarhey Sweetcloud to a bullshit red card at the 72nd minute, forcing us to play with only 10 on the pitch. It was an innocent slide tackle that got the ball more than anything else, but that meathead Drawkland player was able to sell it for the ref and Sweetcloud got the red. I didn't know Drawkland had such good acting classes, honestly.

The match started fairly boring. There was no scoring for the first 35 minutes, although there were some close ones. Torisakia nearly took the early lead at the 5th minute but Jordan Kallian's shot hit off the middle bar and was cleared away. Drawkland got close to taking the lead a couple of times as well, two shots that went wide left and one that was saved by Mitch Issacson. The first score would come in the 36th minute for Drawkland on a free kick goal by Craig Bakker that made it over the jumping human wall and whizzed past Issacson's head. I will give Drawkland this: their fans travel well. There was a decent amount of maroon in the stands and they were a passionate bunch. Pretty sportsmanlike too, I've heard. Torisakia was able to respond just before half time at the 44th minute on a 21 yarder by, ironically, Syarhey Sweetcloud to tie the game. Based on reports, the cheering from the crowd after the goal was enough to cause movement to be detected on the seismograph at the University of Tokai and register a 2.8 magnitude earthquake. I think that makes it the largest earthquake to hit Torisakia in history. Huh.

The second half was even more boring than the first. There were two, maybe three, scoring opportunities between the teams but alas there was no scoring for a good 35 minutes. The "fun" began at the 72nd minute when Sweetcloud went to challenge Trevor Garnet for the ball by way of a slide tackle near mid pitch. Sweetcloud's leg managed to hit the ball and his should brushed up against Garnet's leg, apparently causing him to fall down. Garnet then rolled around on the pitch grabbing his leg and screaming bloody murder as if it had been cut off. The replay clearly showed that Sweetcloud did not hit Garnet's leg hard enough to cause that much pain, but apparently the official wasn't convinced and he gave Sweetcloud a red card and sent him off. What followed was arguably the loudest booing from a crowd I've ever heard. As Sweetcloud was being carded and sent off, Tokai Memorial erupted into a series of boos, hisses, and profanities. Fans began to throw empty Latorade bottles and beer cans onto the pitch in frustration, leading to the PA guy telling the fans to "not throw items onto the pitch" and the TCTF to be promptly sent up to remove any violators of this rule. The stadium then started up the loudest cow manure chant ever. Play was delayed a few minutes to allow the cleanup crew to remove the bottles and trash from the pitch and play resumed with Torisakia down to 10 men. Drawkland finally broke the tie in the 78th minute by Jaxon Madison on a finesse shot from roughly 10 yards out to give them the 2-1 lead. This caused Tokai Memorial to erupted into boos once more, citing Sweetcloud's red card as the reason for why the goal was conceded. Some fans tried to throw bottles and stuff onto the pitch again but the TCTF quickly sought them out, dragged them out of the stadium, and beat them mercilessly on the sidewalk and left them by the turnstiles. Okay well maybe they didn't do that, but those fans definitely didn't have a good night. Torisakia would attempt to tie the game back up in the final 20 minutes but were unable to do so being down a man, and Drawkland ended up taking the match 2-1.

The loss puts Torisakia at 1-0-1 in Group 2 and at 6th place, although right now placement isn't really important. The biggest news is that we'll be without Sweetcloud for the next match, which is against Jantor. Persumably, Manager Sanders will put Aelius Rona or Oskar Carlson in place of Sweetcloud in the midfield. Although it is possible for him to move Gregory Franklyn to Sweetcloud's spot in the formation and put Rona or Carlson in Franklyn's old spot. That would give us a bit better coverage as Franklyn has played both spots in college (University of Yasui runs the same 4-4-2 formation). Not much is known about Jantor except that their name sounds close to "janitor" which President Doug McDowell pointed out on his Twitter. They're currently 1-0-1 in Group 2, having beat EGM 4-0 on MD1 and losing to Lochario 1-0 on MD2. Regardless we should definitely go into the match with the same plan as always: kick the ball around and hope something good happens. The match is being played in Jantor so we don't have to worry about bottles being thrown on the pitch and cow manure chants galore. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

And that's all for today. Next time we'll review Torisakia's match against Jantor and maybe then I'll actually praise or ridicule them. It all depends on how you guys react to that statement. I get to exercise that First Amendment right I mentioned earlier so it doesn't really matter what you think. It apparently only matters what my internet provider thinks. They told me that a 'franchise fee' of T$4.62 a month is for the "indecent websites" I visit. Each time I go to one they charge me T$0.00037. Where are we at in society today? Charging someone T$0.00037 per visit to a website. "Free market" my ass. See these cons? If I had the time, I'd try and get a hold of that provider and sue the pants off them.
You ever woke up one morning and just decided it wasn't one of those days and you were gonna break some stuff?

85th World Cup Qualification MD2 Review
Hapilopper vs. Mercedini
@ Capital Stadium - Hapilopper City, Hapilopper

Hello everybody, welcome back to Mercedini Sports Daily and our coverage of the 85th World Cup, today coming to you from the Capital Stadium in Hapilopper. Last time round, Mercedini fell to a 3-0 loss at home to Banija in their first match of the qualification campaign, a match which sunk the Golden Eagles to rock bottom of the group. The positive to that is the only way is up, and Lyndainium and the MFA hope to get their campaign up and running against a dangerous Pot 3 side. The sun is shining and the stands are filling nicely in Capital Stadium, something that will be a rare sight in the return leg due to current restrictions back home.

In their first match, Hapilopper could only muster a 2-2 draw away to Sankt Konrad, meaning this map is an early six-pointer for both sides if they want to avoid losing ground on the rest of the group. As teams from Pot 2 and 3, they will likely be the favourites to challenge for that second qualifying spot, and with Banija already stating their case for the top spot, the rest of the group could be fighting for crumbs. After this, the Golden Eagles will have two more matches to play before their first half bye, so they want to be within the picture before then to avoid losing further ground. A loss could be devastating to the campaign just two games in, so let's see how it all played out in Hapilopper City.

What looked like a concerning line-up from Lyndanium proved to be a stoke of genius as Mercedini record their first win of the campaign following a narrow 1-0 win in Hapilopper. With the double suspension of Kuznetsov and Hosset from the previous match, it was up to Elaani and Aristaros to take the reigns for their respective positions. Taking a combine ten years of the combined age of the previous starters, they didn't buckle under the pressure of the occasion and not only held firm for most of the match, but kept the clean sheet which ultimately led them to victory. A solitary goal from Dostalok at the end of the first half proved to be the difference, with Dini riding a late onslaught from The Haps in the second half. Hapilopper were clearly a team with quality, which made the win all the more important for Mercedini to claim. With other results, the Golden Eagles shoot off the bottom and into fifth place with three points, and now have the potential to mount a serious challenge to the qualification spots now Mercedini have played both teams from Pots 1 and 3.

Back to the match that has just played out, and it had all the emphasis of a qualification six-pointer. The crowd inside the Capital Stadium were passionate and up to support their players, but the notable absence of the Mercedinian crowd was seen and felt, with a large section of the seating left vacant from the away allocation. The Capital Stadium were still welcoming to the Mercedinian team, as the anthems played out and the flags flew from within the stadium. The action on the pitch was fitting of the occasion, as the Golden Eagles and the Thrashers traded early blows, testing the metal of both goalkeepers. First big chance of the game fell to Mercedini when Garzallo found the time and the space to drill a low cross into the danger area. A bundle of players were arriving to try and get a touch for a shot or for a clearance, but the cross ultimately draw a blank as Chillotov's lunge was just to late to flick it towards goal. An early warning sign for Hapilopper, but the home side wasn't devoid of chances either.

The odd shape of the stadium became clear during wide shots and aerial coverage during the intervals. It meant some fans were close to the action, while some were extremely far away. Even then, the tens of thousands in attendance still made themselves heard, especially during periods of Hapilopper offence. Their best chance of the first half fell to Murray Hunnisett, who plays his football in Banija of all places. A counter-attack from a Mercedinian corner, it was a three-on-three all the way to the other end of the pitch. Stevenson was racing away before squaring the ball to an arriving Hunnisett, the Istria City player took a touch to steady himself before curling a beautiful shot toward the top corner. Elaani was beaten as he stretched for the ball, the crossbar denied a Hapilopper opener as the ball flicked off the top of the frame. Unlucky for the home side, but they were left to rue that misdirection just a couple of minutes later.

Another Mercedinian corner, whipped in by Garzallo from the far side, punched out by the goalkeeper who rose highest to the ball. Chillotov was first to collect the ball, and sent the ball back in. Toivonen got a strong head to the ball it was straight to Hughes who parried it away initially, but Dostalok was there to scoop the ball up in the pandemonium and slot the ball into the net. Opening the scoring and getting their campaign up and running. 1-0 Dini, minutes before the half-time whistle.

In the second half, it was just a case of limiting the attacks of Hapilopper as the home side searched for an equaliser and a potential winner. With no Mercedinian fans in the stadium, it was all against the Mercedinian players as the clock ticked down on a Mercedinian fightback. The thrashers were briefly silenced once again as Mercedini had the ball in the net from a well worked move, but the linesman had his flag up during the build-up, which VAR confirmed during it's follow-up investigation. It kept the home side in the game, which left the final ten minutes extremely uncomfortable for the Mercedinian fans in the stadium. A late onslaught of Hap chances saw no less than six shots on target which were either parried away or blocked by Mercedinian defenders, it was a heart-in-mouth moment for everyone watching across the multiverse. Frustration was growing in the stadium, Hapilopper just couldn't find a way through.

A gale-force exhale of breath throughout Mercedini was felt as the referee blew the final whistle to what was a thrilling and entertaining match for all. Respectful applause played out around the stadium as Mercedini recorded their first victory of the campaign on the road, against their main challengers no less. Things have taken a dramatic turn from the lows of Zoloroni, to the highs of today. Dini are now in fifth and now have a clear run against lower ranked teams. Another nine wins could be on the cards if the matches go as they are written on paper, although we all know the unpredictability of qualification. For the Golden Eagles, Balqia is next in Zoloroni, as the team look to improve their own home form. We hope you will join us for that, and we hope you have a safe evening!

Today's special: Bien Son carabeef jerky
Image
A snack originated from the mountainous Bien Son Province in the north, the carabeef comes from selected buffaloes, not too young or too old. It is then cut into thin strips, flavored with lemongrass, garlic, ginger, dried chilies, and Indian ivy-rue before being smoked on top of a family's wood-burning stove. The snack was originally a specialty food of the Tay people in the northern mountains, later adopted and popularized by the Kinh people of the southern plains.

Two friends walk into a bar... No really! Ha Viet Hoang and Vu Huy Hoang are childhood friends, and today is the first time they hang out in 2 years since Viet Hoang started his study abroad in Cassadaigua. Both are math geeks, but their personality would lead them to choose two different paths for their future. Viet Hoang, with his outgoing and energetic personality, went abroad after high school to study Sports Analytics on a scholarship program, aiming to pursue a career in the field that he is passionate about. Huy Hoang, on the other hand, chose to study traditional Mathematics with the intention of going into academics and research. But they are not studying anything today at Huong Que Bistro. This meeting is a chance for reunion talks, for some fun and relaxing times in a social gathering setting.

Or so Viet Hoang thought. Huy Hoang doesn't look too happy with his friend's choice of place or time for this meeting.

"Do we really have to do this today? I have a PolEcon (political economy) exam tomorrow. You know I need to clear the hold. I can't stand another semes..."
Huy Hoang complains.

"Yes we really have to. Come on man, it's been 2 years since we met and I can't even have a meeting with you for a few hours? You'll do just fine tomorrow." Viet Hoang cuts his friend off in an assertive tone.

Huy Hoang doesn't look convinced, but he doesn't want to spoil the reunion either. "I guess I can try harder tonight. Welcome back bro! How have you been?"

"That's more like it!" Viet Hoang smiles brightly at his friend. "You can see: I'm all well. Living in Cassadaigua is nice: nice weather, nice scenery, nice people. It's a bit strange to experience their culture though, with all the female-driven mindset and stuffs, but nothing extreme. The ladies are really pretty too, so I'm enjoying my time there. How 'bout you? Still burying yourself under the books everyday?"

"Always the ladies..." Huy Hoang rolls his eyes when his friend talks about this aspect. "I'm studying all right. It's a bit heavy coming into these last 2 years, but hey, this is what I like."

"You should go out more bro. You're in the junior year already and no girlfriend? That's not healthy!"

"Who have time for that? There are lectures, sections, study sessions, assignments, thesis..." Huy Hoang shrugs.

"See, you're so bland! That's why I insisted you come here with me. Maybe you'll meet someone interesting here heh heh. Ready to get something?"

They come up to the counter and get some drinks. Huy Hoang was about to get a cup of water, but Viet Hoang cut him off, again. "Two mojitos please, and a dish of the jerky special."

"The hell? I can't drink that." Huy Hoang protests at his friend's blatant disrespect for his agency.

"Yes you can. Try something new. You won't die. No worries, it's on me." Viet Hoang just calms his friend down with a pat on the shoulder.

It's always been like this - Viet Hoang is always the one leading the duo in social situations. Huy Hoang has never been the social type, and he sometimes hates the way his best friend pushes him out of his comfort zone, but he knows Viet Hoang wants the best for him. And deep inside, some parts of Huy Hoang is actually excited with the things his friend forces him to do.

"Fine." Huy Hoang grumbles. "But why exactly do you want to come here?"

"Have you been under a rock or something? Actually it's probably a huge book in your case. Today is a matchday for the national team in the World Cup qualifier. Everyone has been talking about this for months. I can't believe you don't know about it yet. We are playing Eraman today so I wanted to bring you here to meet and watch the match."

"You know I don't know or follow sports. But I did hear about the national team. It's been on the news a lot recently. I'm just not that interested..."

"Well perfect time to catch up then. This is a famous dining place, but it is also a gathering point for sport enthusiast on matchdays. This place is actually owned by the family of a national team's player, so that explain why the owner is very invested in making this space a place for people to watch football. Eh, maybe it's his way of flexing about his son, but who cares. It's a nice place for people like me, and people like you if you have friends like me.

Huy Hoang rarely watches any sports. If he does, it is usually because Viet Hoang asks him to or forces him to do it with him. He has been hearing about the national team these days, something about the new development program, some successes, some embarrassing losses... These news, albeit plenty, got lumped up into a mess of irrelevant news for Huy Hoang. If it was something about the Banach–Tarski paradox, maybe...

The two boys spend times talking about the football topics that Viet Hoang brings up. As the match starts on the screen and the plays happens, Viet Hoang explains the rules, comments on the match and at times jumps out of his seat on a particularly exciting occurrence. "Wow, the national team is playing pretty well. This is kinda exciting, and...enjoyable, I guess." Huy Hoang thought to himself as he silently follows the happenings on the screen; his emotions slowly start to change with the flow of the match: anxious as the team get pressed, worried when a shot is made at Mavinet's goal, hopeful when a promising attack is building, regret as a chance is missed, angry when a foul is committed by the opponent.

It's the 2nd minute of added time in the second half and Mavinet is still trailing by 1 goal. The clock is ticking down its last minute and the team is pushing up to find an equalizer. It's promising: Lam Tri Thong passes to Tran Hoang Minh, who turns and made an accurate pass on to the path of Hoang Gia Bao. A back cross to Tran Hoang Minh, who is running in for a shot. This has to go in... But it was off target. The audience let out a long sigh of deep regret.

"Oh my god, how do you miss from that close? Just aim... I can't believe it..." Huy Hoang slams his hands on table and cries out loud, his face in his hands after that. For a moment, he was so immersed in the match that he acted completely out of his usual character.

As he looks up, he sees his friend Viet Hoang looking at him, trying to hold off his laughter. Realizing what he just did, his face goes a bit red from embarrassment and try to make up a convincing explanation: "Did you see that? If that guy just look at the angle at which he can shoot, where to contact the ball and calculate how much force to put in then it would have gone in. If my calculation was right, he had to meet the ball at a slightly less than 75 degree to the right..."

"Hey I'm not judging you. Nothing to be ashamed of; we're all pretty bummed that the team lost this match. But at least I can be happy that I finally see you enjoy something other than studying and numbers. How do you feel?"

"Okay..." Huy Hoang accepts that he is not a good liar. "That was...fun. I guess I can see why you're so into this. It does have a lot of actions, excitement. I definitely got into the match just now. Maybe coming here is actually a good idea."

"That's what I want to hear, my friend." Viet Hoang pats on his friend's shoulder again. He likes to do that. "We should do this more often. I won't be here the next time our national team plays, but we can chat about it after, alright? Wow what a match. Let's pay and get out of here before you remember your PolEcon exam tomorrow."

Huy Hoang did forget about the exam tomorrow. "Shit, now I have to go back and cram all night." Huy Hoang thinks. But he is glad he came with Viet Hoang today. He always enjoy the company of his best friend, and today it looks like he learns something from this company too. Loosening up every now and then is actually nice. "Maybe I should really try to do this more often. Oh, but only if I don't have to retake the goddamn PolEcon course. Thanks, jerk!"

The boys head out the door as the sun finally sets over the horizon of the city.

OOC - due credit: the dangers of cheerleading cut and pasted (and then lightly edited) from this source.

Ask Sir Barsanuphius

Hello. I'm Sir Barsanuphius the Bold, captain of the Holy Empire football team for the second World Cup in a row.

Since I started my campaign to ban Cocoa-bo, I've been deluged by queries from across the multiverse, so with the help of the publishers of The Imperial Scuttlebutt - the finest tabloid newspaper in the Dreamed Realm - I'm bringing you this new feature where I'll ask any and all questions from the general public from across the multiverse. We'll start with a question that came in to my private telegramme account:

Beth Monroe, Zwangzug wrote:I am following your Ban Cocoa-Bo campaign with interest, although my greatest interest is in making up silly acronyms, and I see that I may have been beaten to the punch by my Omerican counterparts. My question is what is your position on further commercial sponsorship in sports--is it ethical to (say) have a breakfast food company sponsor a stadium or an alcohol corporation put their names on club kits? Or is it merely this particular substance that is unacceptable?

Well, first of all Beth, I'd still welcome more suggestions on a snazzy acronym for my 'ban Cocoa-bo' crusade. Some good suggestions have already come in, but don't let that discourage you!

On your main question, it's only Cocoa-bo that I'm seeking to ban. This dangerously addictive performance-enhancing substance peddled by the corrupt narco-authorities in Vilita and Turori is a danger to the entire multiverse. I know I keep saying that, and I know there's a danger that familiarity with my clear and simple message might eventually lead to some people tuning out. But for now I can't stress enough the need for the WCC to ban Cocoa-bo.

That said, I see no reason why the Zwangzug authorities shouldn't permit multiple commercial sponsors of their sports teams so long as they avoid association with Cocoa-bo.

John Lascaruso-Comneno, Holy Empire wrote:Hi there; big fan of the team - big fan of your captaincy. You seem to have completely turned things around since your appalling 3-2 opening day loss to Devonta with a 5-0 away win to Daskel. How did you turn things around so quickly?

Well, first of all, there's no reason to believe that the Daskel lads drink Cocoa-bo - unlike the shocking evidence of Cocoa-bo abuse on the part of the Devonta squad - so we started with a level playing field.

That said, the gaffers took us aside after the first match and told us we were overcomplicating things. 'Keep it simple' Lord Tzimisces said. 'Short passes; keep possession' added Lord Di Bradini. There's a reason they're one of the most successful management pairs in World Cup history. Sometimes it's just a matter of letting the quality coaching do the talking.

Meghan Banks, Cheergirls wrote:Hello, Sir Barsanuphius the Bold, the problem is not that you are not dirty. The problem is that people can’t play physical against you because they will hurt themselves by making contact with all of that you have on! I realize you have a tradition you want to honor, we do the same thing but our cheer uniforms do not have all those shiny and potentially pointy things that can hurt us!

Dear Meghan. I applaud the passion you're showing on this issue - I'm always one to encourage political engagement by the young - but I ask you to consider whether your concerns are misplaced here. Cheerleading is far more dangerous than playing an imperial knight in armour at football.

Never mind my famously clean playing record... not a single sentient being has ever been injured via a cataphract armour-related footballing mishap - this despite the fact that the entire imperial squad, not just myself, wore full cataphract armour in World Cup 84.

In contrast, cheerleading is one of the most dangerous sports in the multiverse. Despite the ingrained image of pretty girls in movies wearing sweaters and short skirts waving pom-poms, the modern cheerleader couldn't be further from this stereotype - as you're no doubt well aware.

Competitive cheerleading has become a world of its own, and the pressure is on to do bigger stunts, harder tumbling passes, and more dance-packed routines to take home coveted state and national titles. This type of pressure has become dangerous to young men and women who attempt stunts they aren't ready for. And the results can be dire.

According to a recent Hazel City study, cheerleading was the cause of more than half of the "catastrophic injuries to female athletes". This includes skull fractures, cervical spine injuries, brain injury or concussions, paralysis, and death.

Cheerleading is also among the top 20 sports with highest rate of head injuries to humanoids, according to the Multiverse Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Consider the typical cheerleading stunt. There is a flyer, who is the person being held up in the stunt. Two bases support the flyer, and the back supports the bases and the flyer with stability. It is not easy or natural to lift an entire person in this way. With four (or more) people involved in a single stunt that can top eight death-defying feet, one wrong move can spell disaster. The flyer can be injured if they aren't caught correctly (or at all) by their bases, and the bases can be injured should the flyer fall on top of them. Similarly, tumbling passes can result in painful falls and collisions if not executed as intended. Even innocent passers-by can be injured when a cheerleading stunt goes wrong.

So I can assure you that cheerleading is far, far more dangerous than playing football against me wearing my traditional costume.

Also, there are far more pornographic videos featuring cheerleaders floating around the multiverse - or so I'm given to understand, anyway - than there are of cataphract-wearing imperial knights. I'm not quite sure what this means, but whatever it is, it can't be demonstrating that cheerleading is morally wholesome.

Even though I seem to be at more danger from you than you are from me - both physically and morally - I am not disputing your right to take pride in your unique national culture during this World Cup. It is only the insidious influence of Cocoa-bo I'm seeking to ban because of the combination of the unfair advantage it grants to Vilita, and the lives destroyed by its addictive nature.

Nearly 200 nations are competing for a precious place at the World Cup finals. Nearly 200 nations whose football fans will be experiencing a gruelling schedule of qualifying. For residents of the likes of Alikka-Corra, Corvistone, Raynor City and Bastion that’s not really a problem. For some nations qualification is merely routine. A long and tedious routine granted, but routine nonetheless. For others it’s quite a different kettle of fish indeed. Fish. Gill-bearing aquatic craniate creatures that often serve as a stable to the diet and economy of island nations. Such as Grod Island. What a segway.

The Grods have been plugging away for a few years, this being their fourth attempt at the biggest show in the sportiverse. The previous three may not have reaped much in the way of glory but they did happen to share a qualification pot with luminaries of the calibre of Osarius, Squornshelous and Quakmybush. Which is nice. But, despite those lean times on the pitch, the locals were in good voice as a new campaign brought fresh enthusiasm ahead of their first match. They hosted a Sargossa side that had already hit the group running, having beaten off The Mann Clan while the Grods were enjoying the first bye day.

They showed no signs of rustiness though as the home side started with a real spring in their step. But what the Ruby Princes ran in to was a darker blue wall. In recent years, far too many recent years in fairness, Sargossa have had a notoriously glass jaw. In the last campaign second bottom Aimena conceded fewer goals than the Corsairs. And they were utterly hopeless. Lower ranked sides have always found the Sargossan backline less than solid but in the open round against the Menns the defence looked in good shape. A look that the side wore again in their first trip on the road.

It could be early signs that the new regime are producing a sea change in the team’s mindset. At Ciudad Soluca Barreto’s sides were known to be incredibly well organised. A lot of that organisation was said to stem from the work of his assistant Luca Monzón. With Monzón joining Barreto in making the move it’s the national side who now seem to be benefitting. The Corsairs soaked up everything the Ruby Princes throw at them in relative comfort, before launching counter attacks of their own. One of which led to Mauricio Sainz sliding in the only goal of the game from close range.

Six points, two clean sheets. It is all going rather well. And with unheralded Res Publica Nova Roma up next after a round of rest the prospects are good that it’ll continue. Just lay back and close your eyes and you can almost forget that Kelssek, Cassadaigua and Barunia are lurking somewhere in this group too. Almost.

Authoritarian Democracy

Postby Valladares » Mon May 25, 2020 2:04 pm

As the number two in the Valladar Conservative Party, right behind the Prime Minister of Valladares Jefferson Pratt, and Speaker of the Royal Parliament of Valladares, the 57-year-old Bezierien Stéphane Bertrand knew pretty well about the leading role of his party in domestic politics, which had historically joined a coalition with the Catholic League of Valladares (appropriately known as "The Steamroller") that had enabled both sides to rule without having to bargain too much with their historical rivals in the shape of the Liberal and Labour parties. This power also entailed, among several other things, the right to be approached by other smaller and regional parties whenever they wanted to push their political projects ahead. One of those smaller parties was precisely the Hispanic Party of Mountbatten, with whose spokesmen he had just held a productive discussion on their aim to split the Mountbatten state along the lingustic divide running along the course of the Aguablanca river, getting promised in return for Conservative support to their bill the chance to have a much stronger footing on a historical Liberal and Labour stronghold...at least until the secession process was complete.

While that proposal was certainly very enticing to the Conservative leader, Bertrand had another issue on the matter to sort before making a decision; he had been requested an audience at his office at the Royal Parliament building by a group Liberal and Labour envoys from Carloburgo, who just like their Hispanic rivals were looking from support from the nation's strongest party to their point of view: keeping the state undivided. Agreeing with their biggest political rivals on anything they were advocating for would look like a dumb move by the Conservatives, however, Bertrand had a geniune interest to listen to them before deciding on anything along with the rest of his party. After all, he was well aware of the swinging role the Conservative Party would have on the matter and the fact that they would be the deciding force.

That said, he returned to his desk to wait for his guests and in the meantime, opted to read that day's edition of the Royal Gazette. When the envoys arrived, promptly at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Bertrand requested his secretary not to interrupt him before closing the door and starting with the audience. The envoys, a group of 2 delegates from each party, started with their presentation and gave their arguments as to why the Bill of Secession should not be approved by the Royal Parliament, ranging from the fact that the unity of federal subjects (the states) was a matter of national interest to accusations that Hispanic leaders were only doing politics based on their personal benefit and not that of the people, and wouldn't be willing to bargain or reach consensus with the stronger parties once they got away with their plans.

The Conservative leader suddenly got up from his chair and asked a couple of questions to his interlocutors. "Okay, so tell me: Why should we lend our support to you, when you never seem to agree with every bill and project we propose every now and often? Isn't it something, let's put it with a single term...weird?"

The leading Labour delegate then stood up to answer Bertrand's question. "We know that usually it would be ridiculous for any of us to lend its support to the other part when our parties have, at best, been at odds with each other throughout the years, but this proposed bill is aimed at weakening the Mountbatten state in every possible way. A split of the state would at best leave us with half of the budget usually allocated to the state, because...let's not fool ourselves...from where else would this new state earn any federal money from? And we have implemented several projects in education, health, infrastructure, welfare within the state, both in the west and in the east that require a sizeable amount of money. Also, your party would have to open its own branch for the newly established state, because it would not make any sense to have a state body issuing directives for its members in another different state. Doesn't that increase your logistical costs? Because of that we consider the Conservatives would be better off supporting the status quo as it is, and we would be open to iron out rough edges and work together with your regional branch since at this moment we don't consider that a division of the Mountbatten state is what people there need."

Another Liberal politician continued with the idea expressed by his Labour counterpart. "Besides, they are proposing a very dangerous move such as the division of Columbus. That city, as you may know, is nearly divided between Hispanophones and Anglophones by half, and there is as many opposition to the idea of secession as support is around there. And to make matters worse, both communities are intermingled in the city, with Anglophone-majority neighbourhoods being surrounded by Hispanophone-majority ones and viceversa. Splitting the city on accounts of lingustic identification of communities would not be a very wise thing to make because of two reasons: first, it would imply a division of the city into a myriad of enclaves and exclaves of two states, which is absolutely ludicrous and would make local government more complicated, and second, there's the chance people don't like the borders drawn and some kind of violence between both communities makes an appearance. And that is something I'm sure all of us would like to avoid, whatever the outcome of this is."

A third delegate then joined his two fellow delegates. "The Hispanics are nothing but a minor party that all of a sudden gained momentum by exploiting populist goals long forgotten in that quadrant between Columbus and the District of Metropolis, which implied undermining the presence of every one of the traditional parties in that sector, yours included. Although both of our parties stand for the best interests of people, in this case the people living in the Mountbatten state, we cannot stand idly by while a bunch of bigots revile everyone and destroy everything that we have built in that state. Their strategy is disregarding the hard work done by serious state governments and political parties in eastern Mountbatten in order to build something new to their own measure and pleasure. If I were you, I would think twice about giving my support to them. Sometimes you never know who you're actually working for..."

Until that moment, Bertrand had been listened carefully to the four delegates who were trying their best to convince him to get the Conservative Party to vote against the Secession Bill, and their respective arguments. He grabbed the glass of water on his desk, took a sip and after engaging in an exchange of questions and answers and having his doubts cleared, he addressed his guests. "Fair enough. Your arguments are interesting, however, I cannot guarantee you my party's support for your stance since that's something we'll have to discuss internally as a bloc. But undoubtedly they offer to us some insight on the situation, for which I am grateful to you. What I can assure you, though, is that we will get back to you once we decide something on the matter."

The four left-wing politicians thanked the Conservative number two for his time and his receptiveness, and then they left the office. Bertrand, for his part, sat down, and for some minutes reflected on the two points of view he had heard on that hectic day, before making some calls to arrange for a meeting of the Conservative bloc after the first session of discussion for the Bill of Secession in Parliament, to be held the following Monday. In the meantime, Bertrand inwardly thought.

"The discussion on that bill is set to begin tomorrow, and we've got a priviledged position as the swinging party in this case. Now it's up to us to choose between the redemption of a people or the downfall of two of them. We need to pick our choice wisely, very wisely..."

60th minute goal dooms Red Kites

Ethane were looking to pick up their second win of the campaign after their 5-4 victory against Bolgano a couple of days ago. This time in Ethane, the game was far less exciting than the game previous.

The game was one of two halves. Throughout the first half, the Red Kites seemed to be on top, looking for a goal. Hope came close in the 16th minute after a beautiful cross by Montoya, but was blocked. Another big opportunity came just before half-time, with a Burgess shot just wide of the post.

The second half saw a reversal of the direction of the game. Abanhfleft were on top, peppering shots to Araújo, although the defence was managing to stand firm and Araújo making some basic, but solid saves. However, the breakthrough came in the 60th minute, with a cross-box pass catching Crawford off guard. Araújo then dived the wrong way with the shot, and turned to watch the ball slide into the net.

Ethane pushed up into their highest gear but just were not able to find a way through the resolute Abanhfleft defence in the final 1/3 of the game, with a last ditch effort by Mitchell the closest they came to scoring. Mitchell was one-on-one with the keeper in the 90+2 minute, but scuffed the shot and palmed it about a goals length wide of the goal. You could tell that it was it with the facepalm of Mitchell and the celebrations that erupted amongst Abanhfleft fans.

The Red Kites will be looking to get their campaign back on the road in their next game, to keep up with the leaders.

Who Could Replace Bekir?

by Ayse Heidarov

With rumours swirling about Bekir Altingunes' future as the manager of the national team, with his contract set to expire at the conclusion of the next AOCAF we've decided to look at and evaluate candidates and options we believe are being considered as the national team may move away from its inaugural managers.

Marat Yuseinov
The Case For: He's led Manat FK to two league titles in four seasons and to a Vizier's Cup final, showing he has the ability to win when given the resources to do so and with limited investment in foreign talent. He has a winner's reputation, that is well earned and his tactical outlook suits both the current crop of players (who most agree is the best balance of talent available to Timuria) and has been able to use players in creative ways. He's also famously meitculous in preparation, even if he may need a little help with the defensive side of the ball, his Manat side never really looking 100% convincing on that side, but as National Team manager he will have his pick of staff to assist him in organising Timuria's troubled, yet gifted defence.
The Case Against: Last season's late season collapse that condemned his seemingly invincible side to third place and their defeat in the Vizier's Cup final to city rivals Hisar have many wondering if he can succeed at the very highest level when it appears that pressure gets to him and impacts his managerial style. There are also questions about whether he can make tactical adaptations through the course of a match as will often be necessary.

Manas Volkan
The Case For: The manager of the reigning Super League champions, two time Super League winner and repeating Vizier's Cup champion Manas Volkan has produced masterful title and cup runs often overturning deficits on the back of an exceptional defence. He is considered the opposite of Marat Yuseinov, a manager who is able to produce under pressure, who makes changes as circumstances change and takes flawed teams further than they could ever believe. Make no mistake, the Timurian national football team is a flawed side and that in a way makes an ice cold manager like him a perfect fit for them. While his side are a disappointing fourth in the Super League at the moment, he's still within touching distance of the current leaders and given how he's done it before, many expect him to come through again.
The Case Against: His style is very defensive in its outlook and that's led many to wonder whether he would be able to use the talent available to Timuria, which most agree is on the offensive side, most effectively. Concerns also exist about his ability to make a fast start, with his sides famouly slow to get going and the lack of momentum can be devastating in campaigns as short as World Cup Qualifiers, Cup of Harmony's or AOCAFs. There's also questions around talent evaluation and how quickly that bears fruit, but that is a minor concern for now.

Ildemir Akkoz
The Case For: He's done a lot with very little, he manged to take Kilicspor a side that were constantly overmatched and kept them in the Super League well past their expiration date and he knew how to use his best players with devastating effectiveness. He's also managed to construct very good teams relative to the reputation and poor resources that have been at his disposal. He's also a ruthless manager of personnel, somewhat in the mould of Bekir Altingunes who wont be afraid to move on from a player if they're not getting the job done. In that sense he represents much more continuity than a lot of other options on this list.
The Case Against: He hasn't won anything and so far his biggest achievement has been avoiding relegation. That doesn't bode well for a national team planning to move to the next level. He also has a similar problem to Manas Volkan, his outlook is defensive and that leaves the possibility of leaving talent out of the squad that deserves to be there. He's also never really had experience managing a side that's substantially stronger than its opposition for more than a few matches in a row, a situation that may not be replicated if long World Cup Qualifiers become the norm.

Mirzametin Ozgur
The Case For: Led Tutunspor to the Vizier's Cup final when they were back in the Amateur League and he had his side plundered for its talent, but he managed to build an entirely new team from young players and some cast offs and led them to the Super League. He's never had it easy and he's managed to survive fairly comfortably in the Super League.
The Case Against: He hasn't won anything at the top level and that makes it hard to have faith in him. Quite simply he's too much of an unknown quantity and that's bad luck on his part more than anything else.

Hasan Kocaeli
The Case For: He's been with the national team as the goalkeeping coach and is still getting it done in the Super League aged 44. He's apparently very good with the player group he's in charge of and would be a very popular appointment both with players and the country at large.
The Case Against: Rumours are that he'll be with DBFT for one last season as the goalkeeper (he'll be starting the season aged 45 and ending it 47!) plus there's the obvious issue that he has no experience as a manager, creating his own staff, evaluating players and adapting tactically. A very long shot option.

Someone foreign?
The Case For: Yes, it's a little out there, but Timuria doesn't have a deep management pool as demonstrated by our last two options being real longshots with no real top level success. A foreign manager would mean the Football Federation could pick a manager whose tactical outlook best suits the talent available in the national pool and would allow more time for management talent to develop. It would also have the potential to bring an experienced professional to the helm, which would inevitably bring advantages and could see adaptations and improvement to the domestic game.
The Case Against: Of course securing foreign management talent is not cheap, not that the Football Federation is hurting for cash, but it's a noted concern. There's also the issue of attracting a sufficiently good manager. Also this would leave the Football Federation at the mercy of the market and who was available and may result in a much more limited pool than even the domestic managers outlined being available. While we wouldn't expect there to be much of a cultural barrier, it's worth acknowledging that Timuria, with it's largely socialist economic structure and different standard of living may be jarring and cause issues for a foreign manager.

SFFB lines up for WCQ home opener

By Jaukka Halonen
There are few surprises to be expected for Savojarna’s home opener, but attention is nonetheless big at a sold out Nationalstadion Carl Gustaf Bjurman. The team that has been released by the SFFB earlier today roughly fits the mould of an experienced Savojar side with significant youth injected since the Copa, but there are no surprises: Omark and Kjaer still start alongside each other. No surprises were made up front, with Jotansson still getting the start ahead of Sigurdsdottir, who is playing an absolutely abysmal SFS season and could not convince in the test games either. The only light discussion was between Poulsen and Karjanen, but the versatility of having the Finn on the bench in a tight game was preferred by the coaching staff, leaving Savojarna with more options for the late game.

In the pre-qualifying campaign, Savojarna have been highly successful at home even though no match was played at the Bjurman, beating Vdara in Pawlograd with 3-1 thanks to goals of Voynov and Jotansson (2), and Zeta Reka with 2-1 in Hovikkära, where a header by Forsberg and a Voynov free kick made the difference. However, the true test on home ground was lost, 2-3 to Reçueçn in Thorsborg. Despite two first half goals by Jotansson and Maersk, the match was reversed by the guests, who could rely on Dynamo Sjoedrhavn midfielder Grégoire Leclair, spelling some trouble for the Savojars when it comes to top sides. This narrative has been further boosted by an unlucky 1-0 loss in Taeshan before this campaign, with the Purple Knights a traditionally tough opponent whose defensive disposition does not suit Savojarna. However, the convincing showings so far, including a 1-0 in their first game away against Sabalonia, make us lightly optimistic for the game tonight against Terre Septentrionale.

However, don’t get your hopes too high just yet - Terre Septentrionale have started into the campaign well themselves, beating Chromatika away on opening night. This surprising victory has on one hand blasted the group wide open, but also made the task for Savojarna significantly harder (or rather, spelled out how hard it will be a lot clearer, if we want to be exact). Their 3-2 against Sabalonia at home, however, also showed that there are vulnerabilities. Savojarna can exploit those with wide overloads through Pedersen and the triple threat that they pose up front, and should be able to create chaos in their box with runs from the midfield such as shown by Maersk and Poulsen in the first half against Reçueçn. If the Savojars manage to keep up this sort of high-pressure play, a victory against the Pot 3 opponent at home should be possible - and it will be very important to keep their hopes alive.

In the other games, things have gotten interesting as the group promises to be wide open. Chromatika’s initial defeat was followed up with a 3-0 in Sanctanus against a team previously under our radar, and Eura were fought to a 2-2 at home against Northwest Kalactin, another side that was only considered a minor threat before the campaign. With those major sides stumbling, openings may be found for Savojarna. Additional surprise came from Adyatin, beating their first two opponents narrowly each, and now topping the table in a rather surprising turn of events, although that can hardly be expected to last past their fifth round visit to Sjoedrhavn.
MT socialist (mostly) island state - Cultural mixture of Scandinavia, Finland and Russia -Exports iron, steel, silver and wood - Low fantasy in terms of animal species - Sports-loving - 22.8 million inhabitants.

The adjective is Savojar; Savojarnan is not a word!

Three-All in the Lee Islands
By Daniel de Bourgogne

Wins are better than draws, but draws are better than losses. That's a positive that can be taken from the Oberour Ar Moro national team's three-three draw on the road against the Southern Esportivan Union. With the draw, the Dragoons are tied for fourth in Group 14 with Newmanistan, and a game against second-place Omerica in Regium next on the schedule.

It is hard to truly get a grasp on a team's performance after two games. It would be downright reckless to claim that hard-and-true lessons have been learned. It does seem safe to note that the Oberours are more than capable of scoring goals. Seven goals in two games is a fantastic return. However, it can also be noted that this team can allow goals as well. During his time as national team manager, Kadvael Heault expressed his belief that if the Dragoons could hold opponents to two goals in a game, the Dragoons were in a strong position to claim victories. Three goals allowed per game, if this persists, would be dangerous.

But would it persist? Every world cup qualifying cycle ios another time players have to get used to exotic styles of play in exotic locales, while also playing domestic football as well. The players should become used to it, and their performances will settle. It can't happen soon enough. The true threat in the Oberour's qualifying schedule begins with Omerica.

Oberour Ar Moro 4 - 3 North New South Wales

Goals: du Contant de la Mollette 17', Bele 40', Pique-Pain 62', Mauranghas 94'

THE CHICKEN CHRONICLES - PART FOUR

OOC: This RP line focuses on Jecken, a company supplying the national food of Jeckish Chicken in Jeckland and beyond. Jecken have recently been buying naming rights and sponsorships for stadiums, kits and teams, so anyone who is interested TG/Discord Me.

Woody Hamm had been pleasantly surprised by the success of the Jecken marketing push. The sporting association with high quality food was not one often made in some other nations, with burger vans and chip shops often frequented by fans on the way to the game rather than high quality chicken eaten in the seats. But the Campionato Esportiva run coinciding with the launch of international advertising gave Jecken an unlikely platform to sell. Hamm of course knew this was a possibility, but had not relied upon it - banking on football results to make you money sounded a lot like gambling, but not the type done in business.

The deals struck so far had been mostly well received. The armada of Jecken Stadia and shirt sponsorships Hamm had envisioned was starting to build. Massaila City, a club in Oberur ar Moro, became the first to sign a deal, changing their stadium name in a move rarely seen in the country and supplying Jeckish Chicken inside it. A deal had also been made with Moneyfields FC of the Southern Esportivan Union in a deal that could be seen as a surprise given past media tensions between the nations. There had indeed, already been a match played at a Jecken stadium in these World Cup Qualifiers - due to scheduling, South Newlandia’s Jecken Arena had already hosted a game, a thrilling 4-3 victory for the hosts over Tamgu. The pedantic in Woody had wanted the first international game in his stadia to be played in Jeckland, but he was smart enough to realise that a high scoring game would bring better ratings and more sales.

Within Jeckland, he had been less successful. Whilst of course that didn’t matter due to the company already dominating the market, the failure of basketball’s much maligned Jecken Stadium was a smear on the company he could have done without. The build of the stadium meant games were taken away from other regions in Jeckland, leading to fan protests which some pundits claim set the backdrop for the Spuds group stage exit of the International Basketball Championships.

This was not likely to be a problem in football, however. For the entire history of the national team all games had been played at what was then known as Jeckland National Sports Stadium. Purchasing the naming rights was not inexpensive, but came with relatively minimal fuss both inside and outside the boardroom.

Today was a big day for Hamm. The CEO would arrive at the stadium in the morning to ‘open’ it under its new guise, in front of a small crowd of corporates, before his company launched its advertising offensive before the game against Natanians and Nosts. Limited edition Jecken Boxes with Jeckland players depicted on them would be sold in the stadium for this game only - sold from the many new dispensaries the company now had access to in the ground. Above all, Hamm hoped for a win - good sporting results left a positive association with the brand in consumers minds, according to his customer analysis team at least. With a light moan as his back clicked upon standing up, Hamm made his way down to his door, tapping at his pockets to ensure his phone, wallet and keys were there. Outside waited his driver, Carlos, who he’d known for many years, with an empty Jecken Box sat on his lap. He didn’t usually believe in these sorts of things, but Woody thought that was a good sign. Jeckland were going to win.

Two

Goddammit, this would have been so much easier before the injury.

Up to when I was 14, I played in goal for my local team. I was average in most of the aspects of goalkeeping that are seen to be less important, like my distribution and command of my area. But my shot-stopping was immense. I don’t like to big myself up, so I’ll use the words of my Dad here. “I’ve never seen someone with reflexes as quick as you.” And he wasn’t the type to heap false praise on me either. He’d tell it how it was, and always compete with me rather than letting me win. Once, when I was 7, he hit a vicious shot that smacked into my eye and meant a trip to the accident room at hospital.

It was a fairly innocuous day when it happened. I often seemed to have a habit of randomly failing to take a step properly, placing the side of my foot on the floor rather than the sole for no apparent reason, throwing me off balance. You know where a bad place to do that is? At the top of a flight of twenty stairs, that’s where. What made it worse was my attempt to keep the tray with my cereal and coffee upright as I lost my balance. I lurched forward, my other foot missed the ground and I was falling out of control.

SMASH!

The porcelain of my cereal bowl shattered over my head, dazing me. As milk and coffee spilt down the stairs with myself in hot pursuit, I struggled to react to my impending crash at the bottom of the stairs, the cause of whicht I would later find out was a concussion. The only thought I could muster was ‘please don’t snap your neck, please don’t snap your neck’

I lurched to the side, more by chance than my own doing, as I saw the floor approaching. Had I been more present in my mind I would have stuck my left arm out to break the fall. As it happened it turned out to be tucked underneath me, meaning my full bodyweight landed on it with a sickening noise.

The break would take a year to heal, and it had comfortably done so by the time I was carrying the box up three flights of stairs to my new university room. That wasn’t what made lugging my electronics up there harder. What did it was the fact that the gym work I’d been doing to build up my body for football had stopped with the break. And I’d never played football since.

I put the box down on what would be my new bed and looked to my mother, who was already sorting through the previous items I’d brought with me to Lingham. “That’s the last one.” I said, and sat down for a moment’s rest. So, Lingham University. I should have probably been really excited and really nervous as well. Not that I wasn’t those things - just not to the extent I felt I should be. But that didn’t hugely bother me. I’d always been the type to take things as they came. Except for the heavy stuff - my Dad’s death that is, not the boxes. That had knocked me for six, but I’d learnt to live with it. Or so I thought.

GROUP 1 - MATCHDAY 2 ROUNDUP

With Jeckland sitting this round out due to the odd number of teams in the group, it was a chance to assess their opposition before the competition really kicks into gear. Of particular interest to the Spuds will have been the 4-4 draw between their next opponents Natanians and Nosts and Sajnur, who beat them in the opening game. Elsewhere, top seeds Turori kicked off their campaign with a narrow win over low ranked Astograth. The other games in the group looked to be close on paper and so they proved, with no team in the entire group winning by more than one goal. Muradil continued their bright start with a 2-1 win over Necosia, while there were stalemates TJUN-ia and Euran Oceanic Territories as well as Villablanca and Porticalia.

Natanians and Nosts 4–4 Sajnur

Her eyes focused on the tiny letters written in the paperwork. She gave a brief tap to the sheet, before examining the two in front of her: a girl with tons of fabric covering her (seemingly) green skin and the polite dark-haired boy that was the child of that weird couple that ran the hot baths. She lowered her glass, letting out a sigh. "So, your name is Canvas, correct?" The girl gave a small nod. "And any particular reason for your... clothing choices?" Hinode looked to his side, raising an eyebrow. "Think she's shy, headmistress..."

The elf took a sip of tea, getting up from her seat, analyzing the wall that was behind her, full of pictures of former classes of the school. As both Hinode and Canvas remained on their seats, the alien girl hoping to survive the barrage of questions she expected to listen to, found herself shocked when the elf was more adamant towards asking him about things. "I'm aware of the nature that emanates from both you and your relatives, Hinode. For better or worse, I'm one of the few that still remembers all that happened... and I'll say this only once, where did you bring this girl from?" Hinode looked around the room, puzzled from the comments of a past he himself couldn't recall, still on his seat before giving a rather yellow grin to the elf's sights. Aware of the possible (poor) reaction he'd get for even prying about the past, he piped in with a small, uncertain answer. "Uh... Milton Keynes?"

She took back her seat, being careful that her rather ornate and overly-detailed dress didn't get stretched in a way it shouldn't. "Hinode, I hope you're aware that such a place doesn't exist. Now, give me a proper explanation on where she is from and we'll see whether or not I should allow her to attend this highly-esteemed institution..." She then took a good look at the alien, barely managing to observe the girl's curious white pupils in a sea of black. "Or whether I should call up the Sonnelian Research Association to report a creature from outside of our world." She could hear an audible gulp from within the layers of fabric, her suspicion was indeed accurate and there was no way she was wrong about this: the girl in front of her wasn't from this very Earth, although anyone with a pair of working eyes could tell that.

Before Hinode could try to come up with a proper excuse, the girl lowered the cloth from over her mouth. With a mouth full of pearly whites, the elf noticed the rather human-looking mouth the girl had. Canvas took out the aviator glasses she had strapped on her head and sighed. "I'm from space, Madam. But I come on peace, I swear!" Unsurprisingly, the elf rolled her eyes. Still, the alien girl seemed innocent enough and Hinode himself didn't look like being there against his will. "Then how did you end up here? And why?" Hinode blinked, pondering. "I kinda found her at my door three nights ago..."

She sighed, looking at Hinode for a second before looking at the elf. "I'm a runaway. Not like my parents will come back for me. I'm a princess... but I do want to start a new life on this planet." The elf rose an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "And how does an alien, who probably won't be able to blend with everyone else, wish to even start a new life in this planet?" Canvas sighed. "With all due respect? Madam, you're an elf."

She looked to the ceiling for a bit, shrugging afterwards. "Fair enough. Get your uniforms on the first floor and your classes start tomorrow at 8." The alien bowed, getting up from her chair, leaving the room followed by Hinode. "Oh... And dear." They looked at the headmistresseed, who only grinned.

"You can show your face. They won't be scared."

Bar talk

Postby Balqia » Mon May 25, 2020 3:40 pm

Everyone's eyes were looking at the television, the music stopped a while ago, when Lavo scored the first goal the entire band lost their concentration and prefered to watch the game. When the second goal was scored by Sankt Konrad the barman forgot his work, now, the atmosphere was starting to become heavier.
In the last minute of the first period Tuqi scored a goal, but things got worse when, during the tenth minute of the second half, Simit passed through the defense and scored. The placar was 3-1, the match continued in silence until Zay scored, this was received with some sighs and a lone “hooray”, but nothing more.
Now the clock was ticking, fifteen minutes until the end, and no one dared to cross in the opponent's area. Zay advanced, but lost the ball to Hentto, Torviq kicked the ball, but missed the shot entirely, hitting an empty bench. Now, with only ten minutes left the offensive was a need to avoid a bad start.
The long awaited goal came from Zay, he received the ball from Soletz and advance only a couple of steps before sending it directly in the goal. For the final minutes the team kept pushing, but no score was made, the match ended in a tie.
With no more match to be seen the bar returned to normality. Voices rose bit by bit and the guitar’s sound took the room, drinks and food went in and out of the tables, even a laugh could be heard coming from somewhere. Riviera sighed.
— What a match, huh?
— A good one.
Both of them ordered another juice.
— Oh God, how I miss beer.
— I know, they don’t even have soda!
They complaint a bit more about the country’s beverage before reaching business conversation.
— Our flight is tomorrow morning. Let’s enjoy our little time here then.
— We’ll have a press conference. Alone with the media for an hour.
— We are being paid for it.
The juice arrived, orange for Riviera and strawberry for Rockwell.
— Yeah, but why don’t they do it?
— Because a player went mad during one of those. So, to avoid this happening internationally, they are using us. And to avoid getting someone sick, I heard they will be fully isolated, the entire hotel was reserved and detitised.
— These guys ‘re paranoid.
Riviera lost herself in her cell phone, letting Mary with no one to chat with. She used this opportunity to go to the bathroom. When she was cleaning her hands someone put the hand in her shoulder, it was a blond woman with green eyes.
— Oh my god, it’s you!
Indeed, Mary was herself;
— I’m sorry, do I know you?
The woman made a surprised face, but then laughed and took a badge from her purse. It was from the Sports Ministry.
— I’m Erna, we work together.
— Oh! Erna, of course I recognize you. — She didn’t — how’s going?
— Very well, my husband and I came here to watch the match and eat a bit. Where are you sitting?
This encounter led to Erna and her husband sitting together with Riviera and Mary.
— So, great match, huh?
Erna’s husband, Alexander was his name, was a blonde man in his late thirties, his long mustache and formal clothing would make anyone think he was a hipster.
— Yes, we almost got them.
— What are you going to do against Mercedini?
— Oh, we don’t work in this sector, but I guarantee you that they will be wearing the white uniform.
Erna intervened.
— I heard Berka saying somethin’ about Zay. I think they are goin’ full offensive in the beginnin’ or somethin’ like that.
Everyone looked at Riviera.
— What else did you heard?
— Ptoloviq will be playin’, Vulop was too ineffective, whatever this means.
— Anything else?
— No, that’s all. He was almost shoutin’ in his phone, didn’t you hear?
Erna smiled and siped a bit of coffee.
— Here in Balqia we avoid hearing other people conversation. You hear the wrong thing today and will be missing tomorrow.
She said that in a very natural tone, way too natural.
— So, Mrs Riviera, what do you think about our team?
— Y-you can call me Fran.— She was obviously startled — I like it, I mean, I don’t have done nothin’ important ‘till now, but you guys ‘re very organized.
— I like it too!
Mary just didn’t want to be left out of the chat.
— How wonderful. I wonder, do you think we will classify this year?
— Dunno, I hope so. But by your past history I’ll say no.
— I think we will. This year’s team is very good. I heard that football became very popular here.
Alexander laugh.
— You can tell this by the guys in this bar, everyone is excited.
Looking around the most exciting thing would be the band, but even they seemed reserved. Everyone else was almost whispering, someone gesticulated something with his hands here and there, but for Mary the place was very melancholic.
— For balqese standards, I guess.
They talked with each other a bit more, but soon everyone returned to their place. Mary’s room was just as she left it, a shower and a small reading before bed and she was already sleeping. In the next day they took their plane to Mercedini.

The Cocoa-Beet

A The Beet Editiorial: Won’t Someone Please Think of the Children?
The Beet is proud to offer its powerful and whole-hearted endorsement to the Holy Empire Football Association’s crusade against Cocoa-bo

A tasty threat

The Imperial City, The Holy Empire — As the most respected news publication in the United Republics of Omerica, The Beet is proud to offer its Official Endorsement©™ of the crusade against the plague of Cocoa-bo.

Secretly developed in the terroristic narcostate of Vilita and exported through its insidious puppet state of “Turori”, Cocoa-bo is the most dangerous threat to sapient life the multiverse has ever seen. Famed for their delectable chocolate-spiked beverages, Cocoa-bo has been exported by the Vilitan régime across the multiverse, infesting the innocent nations of Equestria, South Covello and the Free Republics in its confectioneried grasp.

Luckily for the future of our and all species, someone has finally found the courage to stand up to this treat… err… threat. The Holy Empire Football Association, recognising the insidiously delicious danger of the bird-branded eatery, have taken a stand. Represented by their glorious and delectable captain Sir Barsanuphius, HEFA have sounded the alarm to warn the multiverse about the evil plot by the Vilitan régime to cripple everyone who stands in their way of sporting glory.

“This is my new crusade,” our knight in shining armour stated in a press release to this godforsaken world. “I shall not rest through World Cup 85 until my prejudices are confirmed, regardless of the actual evidence, and this dangerous substance is banned across the multiverse.”

According to the completely reliable soldier, the international version of Cocoa-bo is designed to be an addictive, enfeebling drug as opposed to the performance-enhancing version distributed domestically and, according to our special Vilita experts, we are inclined to agree. The Cocoa-faux, as our offices have taken to calling the international knockoff, has been reported to have aphrodisiac and killer-rabbit-killing properties. If these reports are correct—and we have absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe they are not—, it is evident that Cocoa-faux is a flavourful menace that must be eradicated from history.

This is the kind of unnonsense that we here at The Beet are proud to push our weight behind. We wish Sir Barsanuphius and the Holy Empire Football Association every success in their righteous crusade and are ready to offer our top-of-the-line evidence-doctoring services in support of this glorious campaign.

Previous part here

The fifth hour of the flight from Reino Do Brasil to Trolleborg was just beginning, when Naomi fall asleep after a hearty dinner.

Through him, she heard, nevertheless, some cautious fuss around. Some huge, rather creepy looking iron thing with a variety of manipulators was rolled down the aisle directly to her chair and someone in white began to calibrate the settings on it. “Now we insert the chip into her flesh and she will return back to whatever-it-was and do what we said!” muttered someone else in an undertone. “Will she smile? She looked so good smiling”- “Of course it will. What you write to her in the algorithm she will do, precisely. You say: now hang in the virtual space, smile at the passengers on the plane and adjust where to put their luggage, and so spend all your life - and she will without objections ”. After this both villains laughed very villainously. “But I don't give it up so easily!” Naomi shouted and swung her hand with all her strength.

And she bruise a hand on the armrest. Villains laughed, as it turned out, in her headphones - on the monitor was some kind of costume drama from Trolleborg life, and a certain villains grind their teets and spewed threats. Having relieved her frantically beating heart, she looked around. No intimidating iron–and-steel contraption and no traces of it anywhere. Not a single person in the aisle. Passengers calmly engaged in their endeavours. Ahead, Wesley chopped someone in the game, threw stones somewhere and brandished a long stick at someone.

“Attention, dear passengers!” - Keithss came to life. - “We are beginning to descend right into the Trolleborg International Airport. Please, those who wish to use the services of the Keith system during their stay in Trolleborg, express your desire to the on-board system or upon arrival at the terminal ...” For some time, she continue to tell benefits the cooperation with Keith promises, and a big button appeared on the screen with a proposal to agree , with the prospect of giving up if there is a desire of user at any time. Not without some effort, driving away the memories of a dreadful dream, Naomi nevertheless poked at the button and the pleasant voice in the headphones, different from one of Keithss, responded “I am very glad! See you on earth! ”

The plane going to the Trolleborg from the sea,

make a turn around and begin descent. A ridge of mountains has already appeared. As Naomi knows from the book hastily studied at home, it separated the coastal plain where Trolleborg City is located, from the neighboring one, which looks completely uninhabited, although 7-8 km to the center of the city from the crest of these hills.

Somewhere in this direction 1st December stadium located, but weather was cloudy and nothing was visible.

And now the mighty aircraft carrier smoothly goes down and surprisingly gently and accurately land on the strip and soon stops at the terminal.

“Thank you very much, dear passengers, for using the services of our airline! We are waiting for you aboard the Trolleborg Wings flights!” - Keithss chirped and the door to airbridge opened.

95X WC 85 MD 2 RP

Postby 95X » Mon May 25, 2020 4:00 pm

From the 95X Wire Service:
95X 2–1 Aldaveria
(95X: Notgnirrah :51 :79; Aldaveria: :66)
Reporting from VERBURG, ALDAVERIA—The 95X National Soccer Team won their second game in the World Cup 85 Qualifying season.

After a scoreless first half that saw each side get several good looks and two saves by 95X keeper Lauren Hills, Natalie Notgnirrah connected for the 95Xers on a ground shot early in the second half. Despite a quick response by the opponents, Notgnirrah would score again to put 95X ahead going into the closing minutes.

When asked, 95X Head Coach Katelynn State said "lower-rank nations aren't a sign of weakness, it just means the sports world hasn't seen what they're capable of yet".

The win gives 95X six points to lead their qualifying group, out of six points possible so far.
