Sarzonia walking into Xanneria's home court and pulling off a shockingly easy 90-66 victory over the multiverse's 23rd ranked team wasn't even the biggest upset in Group G.

Unranked TJUN-ia shocked the previously undefeated Dragons 93-75 in Valanora, dropping the group's highest ranked side to 5-1 and just one game ahead of the Stars in the table. For Thomas Manningham, the fact that a likely angry Dragons team will be hosting the Stars is a major concern.

"We know we're going to get their best shot," Manningham said. "We have to wary of them."

Against Xanneria, the Stars got 29 points and seven rebounds from Mike West, who played ten minutes of the first half at power forward as Sarzonia used its small lineup to go on a 15-3 run that seized control of the match. In the second half, reserve centre Terry Rutledge played 17 of the 20 minutes, grabbing nine of his 10 rebounds and scoring all eight of his points.

Manningham said Rutledge would get the start against Valanora.

"Nothing against Cal, but Rutter has been a dominant player inside for us and we want to have more of an intimidation factor in the post," Manningham said. Centre Calvin Baker declined to comment on the move, saying that was a coaching decision. Privately, however, Baker was furious, said a team source who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss private deliberations within the team.

"He feels like Manningham is making him an example, a scapegoat, and for what? We're 4-2 and we're only a game out of being level for first place in the group table."

After Sarzonia plays the Valanora match, they will return to The Palestra to face unranked Prieva. Arena officials have been advised that the city of Woodstock had declined the venue's request to reopen for fans, dismissing a request for even an extreme social distancing seating plan that could have placed up to 900 spectators into a venue with a seating capacity of 21,730.

Mayor Claudia Alta said the city was still discussing the ongoing treatments provided to people who contacted the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus and the potential vaccine developed by Delaclav scientists. She said she had Sarzonian surgeon general Linda Carswell "on speed dial," but said Carswell hadn't advised her it was safe to open the doors to The Palestra or any other sporting venues just yet.

"If we're going to open the doors, we have to do it in a responsible way, one that manages risks," Alta said. "We have contingency plans in place if we see a new spike in infections and plans in place to manage the gradual reopening of our economy."

A source familiar with the negotiations within the Surgeon General's office suggested that The Palestra would be able to hold up to 900 spectators for the group stage finale against TJUN-ia, but added that aggressive testing would take place along with tracking and extreme isolation of anyone infected by the virus in order to prevent its spread.

Note: Cliff Stanley, the former supervisor of Fleetwood Park auxiliary staff during the last World Baseball Classic when the Sarzonian national baseball team qualified for the knockout rounds in Drawkland, died Friday night from complications of the virus.

Stanley was fired by stadium officials after referring to the virus as the "Wuchang novel Coronavirus. His lawsuit contending that his termination violated Article VI of the Sarzonian constitution was dismissed by a Woodstock magistrate judge, who said the argument "didn't hold water." Stanley was 39.

Andromeda Eagles vs. Vangaziland Royals
Vann Bank Field Hutt
North Emeros, Vangaziland
Match Day #6

Andromeda News Network correspondent Cornell Prince reports from an empty Vann Bank Stadium.

“In their previous contest, the Vangaziland Royals arrived in Joppa to face an unranked, untested version of the Andromeda Eagles. The Eagles, with help from a sympathetic home crowd the Archipelago’s cultural capital, managed to stay close in their contest against the Royals, only losing by four.”

Cut to footage of the pre-game ceremonies.

“Before the game, there was a moment of silence in honor of the recent passing of Quebecois King Jacques IX. The Eagles and Royals also elected to wear black arm patches on their uniforms in honor of the fallen monarch.”

“Tonight, the contest was one for the Group F lead. The Royals’ air of invincibility was extinguished in their previous outing against the Crystal Ponies. The Eagles looked to increase their win streak to five, which would be an uphill battle on the Royals home floor.”

Cut to first half highlights.

“The first half was a chaotic affair between the Group F leaders. The lead in the second quarter see-sawed between the host Royals and the upstart Eagles, resulting in a 39-38 lead for the Eagles at the half.”

“The Eagles were led by Joppa point guard Gigi Flores, who seemed energized by the near-capacity crowd at Vann Bank. Flores came off the bench late in the first quarter and had seven points and six assists at the half.”

Cut to an interview with Gigi Flores.

“It wasn’t like we were in Joe Napoli Stadium, but it was like we were playing a road game at home. As you know, the best teams in our league are the ones who can win consistently at home and on the road when the crowd is against you.”

“You weren’t intimidated?”

“It’s hard not to be awe-struck at first, but as Coach Payton showed us, the dimensions of the court are the same here as they are back home. We also knew that while the Royals would be hard to beat here, it wasn’t impossible.”

Cut to fourth quarter highlights.

“After leading 60-58 at the end of the third, the Eagles switched to a three-guard offense and pulled away in the fourth. Flores shot 3-for-3 from the field in the fourth, including two uncontested three-pointers.”

Flores’ voices over fourth quarter highlights.

“It felt like the basket was two feet wide. Almost everything we threw up seemed to go in.”

“With a 11-point lead and two minutes to go, Flores left the game with 19 points and 12 assists in 31 minutes of action.”

Cut to Cornell Prince outside of Vann Bank Field Hutt

“For those of you in the Allied States who missed it, the Eagles proved to themselves, the IBC and basketball fans across the NS Universe that they are, indeed, a contender in this Tournament. This is Cory Prince with the Andromeda News Network.”

THE ROCKET REPORT

REMEMBERING THE OLD GREATS- PART I OF A SERIES

by Taylor Larson,

As the International Basketball Championships take place, we are reminded of who the great teams of the sport presently are. Drawkland and Vangaziland are the easiest names for the current generation to remember. They are the dominant teams right now, but many are right on their doorstep, including Banija, and maybe even the Rockets. Certainly, you can include Free Republics and Quebec here as well. The “now” generation will try to be historic and mention the dynasty of Saint Kanye. They were a great one too, and they have retired from this sport while on top of the mountain, feeling that they had accomplished all that they had set out to do. That is fine for them, and if players from that nation feel as though they would love the chance at an individual level, they’ll just have to accept the decision of the nation. We can be grateful that they have chosen their focus now to winning a championship in NSSCRA. Saint Kanye is great, and was great, but if that’s as far back as you’re going to go, you are missing out on the roots of the game. Dig down, even deeper then scooping up the likes of the Andromeda Islands along the way.

The legends of this sport, the nations that laid the foundation in which we currently play. Newmanistan is one, but not the greatest. Let’s talk about Dancougar. Let’s talk about Secristan. How about Sarzonia? They’re back now, but they were a force back then. Arroza. If it weren’t for these nations, we’re not telling the story of Drawkland or Vangaziland today. Even Saint Kanye, that doesn’t happen either. One day, yes, there would have been an international basketball tournament, but it’s a sport that never did off the ground in the way that others would. It’s a history that should not be swiped away in a “Jolt” of disappearance. Modern history threads begin with IBC 4. Oh, there was a lot more that went on in basketball before then. Don’t forget this history, for it is remarkable.

Basketball never got going quickly because of no way to be able to score it efficiently. That seems weird, right? Basketball games are played throughout the nations individually, but no way of scoring them internationally was present. That is until the nations of Newmanistan and Dancougar got together and made sure that it would happen. It was a great rivalry that we had with Dancougar, fun on so many different levels; all beginning with us winning consecutive Baptisms of Fire in soccer, them the 26th, and us the 27th. What made it thrive is that we were both active in other sports. Dancougar was always much better in soccer, but despite that Newmanistan dominated them when it came to head to head meetings in that sport. They would have an traditional Challenge trophy that was played for every year. With all of that going on, the two nations worked together to figure out a way to efficiently “scorinate” the game of basketball. The common method of “xkoranate” which everyone is familiar with now, was not yet something that had been created.

Dancougar would host the first IBC, and 14 nations would sign up. In addition to our teams, we saw Secristan, our Classic “Penthoria River” rival, and Arroza. Arroza, what another classic. The winners of Baptism of Fire 28, following up Dancougar and us, and another nation that participated in many of the great sports we know and love. They were particularly formidable on the gridiron. Cafundeu and Taeshan were two others that most can identify with. And was Lovisa in? Yes sir, Lovisa was in! Newmanistan and Secristan would top one of the two groups of seven, while Cafundeu and Arroza topped the second, but they were not the only teams to qualify for what was then a second round of games. Eventually, the final four teams that would advance to the semifinals were us, Secristan, Cafundeu, and a nation known as Frontenax that was our opponent in this round. Newmanistan eliminated Frontenax, and a classic series between two nations obsessed with money and taxation, Secristan took care of Cafundeu. The very first championship series of this new tournament in the world called the International Basketball Championships was talking place, and the “Penthoria River War” was born. I realize any overseas readers don’t know what I mean by that so here it is. Newmanistan and Secristan were neighboring nations in the region of One Big Island. The border was the Penthoria River.

Newmanistan drew first blood in the series, winning the opening game, 119-79. (Do teams even score 119 anymore in this tournament?) . Unfortunately for the Rockets, the Millionaires came back to win the next two games of the series, 97-81, and 97-93. Down a game, and facing elimination, the Rockets were in trouble and the neighboring Secristani media was beginning to their gloating and flashing their bling. It was simply, their way of life. We were unable to do anything about it, Secristan defeated us in Game 4 as well, winning 98-92. They would gloat a lot more, enjoying that they had beat us down in this series. Looking back at the game and series now, I guess they earned it. It’s funny they talk about those parties and celebrations focused on the city of Amherst, Secristan. Little did they know that their city, after the nation ceased many years later, would become Jessicaville, Newmanistan following the annexation of that portion of Secristan (and the dispute with Secristan’s neighbor on the other side, another nation you have heard of before, called Cassadaigua). Banners and those trophies have been maintained in the city of Jessicaville in the current day, ironic because they came while beating us, but in a sense, we have that trophy now.

And such, a history of a tournament would blossom, was born. It didn’t stop there folks, I’ll continue with a look at IBC 2, because there would be a great encore.

"Fuck!" Jan Harris cried out. "Shit! Fuck! No! No!" he continued to scream as the final buzzer rang out, confirming Abanhfleft as the losers in their second meeting against the returning Cassadaigua. And then Harris managed to calm himself down, and he told himself, Take it easy, Jansen. Now is not the time to blow a temper tantrum.

Harris knew exactly what was waiting for him at the end of this game. He could already hear the questions about to be posed to him by the fucking media. Coach, how come your team was beaten by the same team you trashed just a few days ago? Coach, did you pull back your guns a little too early this time? Coach this, coach that. Fuck that noise! he finally told himself to tune out everything else.

And Harris predicted the questions right down to the inflections. He tried to respond to the questions as calmly as he could given the circumstances. "I don't want to say that we got complacent," he answered to the first question, "but when you've won against a certain team by 40 points or so, you kind of expect to do the same thing going forward. Obviously that's not going to happen all the time, just like we saw here tonight. But honestly, the fact that we played good and still lost stings a little bit. There's no other way to say it."

"Honestly, who even thinks that after tonight?" Harris said in response to the second question. "No one can say I rested my guns tonight. Everyone out there in the blue, orange and green played their hearts out. Yes, sad to say that some of them didn't get to perform at the level we expected. But everyone contributed their fair share. The only bad thing I can say about our team was that it wasn't enough to beat Cassadaigua a second time around."

"This third question is for Jazz Higgs," one of the journalists said. Higgs, the Rebolusyonaryos team captain under Harris, nodded his head and leaned closer to the microphone.

"Jazz, once again you put up a double-double in this game. It's literally tradition by now," the reporter said. "Now, my question is, with your teammates like Joe Sanchez and Billman Paguio not putting up the same numbers you have, do you feel like you're going to have to carry this team through to the playoffs?"

"I don't want to answer that question, to be perfectly honest," Jazz replied. "I will say this however. We the Rebs are a team. We do what is needed to get the win. We know our roles. We know what we're supposed to do, both on offense and defense. But we all know that basketball can be a game of streaks. Right before this game we were red hot. There's no telling if this is gonna affect us in the near or far future though, but we've all agreed to put this L behind us and move on to the next game. And you never know which player will get hot or cold. Who knows, maybe next game I'm the one throwing bricks and either Joe or Billy boy or even someone else will get a triple-double. Basketball's a strange game, and I think that's the reason why we love it so much." Jazz ended his answer with a laugh.

"All right, that's all for now, folks," Harris called. "We will be taking no more questions."

Hennie Vergoossen found a work of his life a long time ago, and for fifteen years, since the end of the Murnau Univercity, he has been working on the “Great March” interactive panorama, and remains a supervisor, twice decline offers to go to work in the scientific department. He is very attracted to the opportunity to daily (almost) personally participating in the development of events known by everyone throughout the country along with heroes respected by each of its inhabitants, even if only virtually. He especially appreciates the inspired and amazed faces of children when they go out at the end of the tour, having experienced much of what our ancestors experienced in those distant and glorious, but also very bloody and difficult days. So it is not surprising that the issue of protecting the honor of the country's flag is not an empty phrase for Hennie. For a long time Trolleborg has not waged wars, but now a new direction has been discovered in which the country needs support, namely sports. Hennie already, by the standards of the short history of Trolleborg’s international sport, is a veteran: he was being at the BoF final, then make three visits to the away games of national team in WCQ, sadly missed CoH, but he visited Taeshan at the youth soccer world championship, where he was very disappointed with the conditions of the tournament and the new country, not to mention the failures of his favorites, and managed to get to the hockey world championship last year, which, however, again did not give him much pleasure from the games itself, although the blooming Kelssek delivered difference. And now he is making his third trip in support of the basketball players, to the mysterious Nova Roma.

We must admit that the whole country was seriously afraid of this game: a direct competitor on his own turf, and after a series of setbacks clearly eager to interrupt it. But the Trolleborg team played above all praise - disciplined, but at the same time with the soul and not freezing the game. +10 to the first break, +17 to the big one and almost 30 at the end, when the hosts seemed to have spent all their strength and kept only on sense of duty. This does not solve all the problems of the Trolleborg team arising from its inexperience in international competitions, but at least Hennie is sure that our basketball has a great future. “I hope that the our football and hockey players too acquire any measure of success, we support them so noisily that, it seems, our fans are not even the 12th player, but added at least four”

STATISTICAL SUMMARY:
Nova Roma – Trolleborg 55–82 (14:24, 29:46, 41:62)

In other games, Newmanistan give us a some hope to qualify by winning 84–79 against Kita-Hinode, and Puppeted States prove themselves agains Juvencus, won 76–67.

Big win for the Lions clears the pathway for Banija to make the knockout stages of the International Basketball Championships

Image
Banijan fans on Matchday 6 against Donnacona

HOIMA, ANKOLE- The Banijans have just come off of a dominant effort defensively against Donnacona at home. Matchday 1 was like a heavyweight fight between the two nations- both trying to jockey for position in, going into the tournament, was easily considered the IBC's group of death. And we know why this was considered the group of death- all the close games in the first half of these group stages. Banija's games against Donnacona, Equestria, and Delaclava were decided by a combined 10 points. All three coming down to the very last possessions, all three tense until the very end. And so these rematches, on the back end, would prove very consequential- how much have the Banijans improved over 5 games?

Winning at a tournament like this, with a long group stage and then a short but decisive knockout stage, requires peaking at the right moment. Peaking at the beginning doesn't do you much good- you want to be playing your best right as you enter the knockout stages. Of course, you have to get to the knockout stages first- and there were no guarantees to get there. Look what Banija had to fight through to get to 5-0 in this tournament. The game going down to the final seconds against Donnacona, in Donnacona. The game against Delaclava coming down to the very last play, where the Lions were rather fortunate, considering Delaclava let the ball bounce off their hands as they had a chance to tie or win. And against Equestria, it came down to the last seconds, as Wassa Itraba intercepting a pass with 2 seconds left and running out the clock is why the Banijans won that one.

The double round robin, of course, allows teams to show how they've improved over the course of play. How do you adjust to teams that have already seen you once, where they have been with you down to the wire? It's an important question. Isaiah Lavaga said that was the most important part of the next 5 games. "Of course, the most important is clinching our spot in Equestria, and then winning the group while we're at it." Lavaga told reporters. "But showing how we've improved, how we can make adjustments, how our mental game is getting stronger- that is what we can put on display in these next 5 games, before we get to Equestria."

And the first test of that, of course, was Donnacona. To say that the Banijans put on a defensive clinic in Hoima would probably be an understatement. It was a defensive masterclass. They were everywhere, and were absolutely smothering. Their opponents shot just 24% from the field, and even worse from three point land- just 15% from beyond the arc. Every single shot was contested. Everytime Donnacona drove to the lane, all they met were Banijan bodies. Of course, the referees were also calling a very lax game, which also encouraged Banijan physicality, but it was a wonderful performance in the back end. THe most telling stat? Donnacona only had 3 offensive rebounds the whole night.

It was a great night for the Banijans. It was the best defensive performance of the matchday- no other team held their opponent to 50, and the Lions held theirs under 50. Isaiah Lavaga credited the players. "We had a great defensive gameplan, with adjustments from our plan in Botley- and it worked almost to perfection. Defense in basketball is very fundamental- don't get beat one on one, either on the dribble or in the post. You've got to rotate quickly, and all 5 guys need to box out. We did everything well in that regard. We were decent on the offensive end- we need to work on finding ways to score more points. But if we can continue to play like that defensively, we can go a long way. Defense wins championships, right? I hope to see more performances like that from these men."

Banija's next game is an away game against Southwest Eastnorth, an 0-6 side that has already been eliminated. Banija beat them fairly easily in country, and they will be heavily favored again against this winless side. Those last 3 games are all big though- the Lions will need to prioritize getting to 7-0 before they end the group stages with three teams fighting for their playoff lives- Delaclava, Valladares, and Equestria.

It was 3:00 on the day before the next match of the Kalactanians IBC 29 campaign and they were watching film in the room of the hotel that where staying at. They where watching film of the most recent game for the Free Republics against Qasden. Michael Hughes shut off the tape and went up to the screen.

Michael Hughes: “What do you notice about these guys.”

Charlie Larson: “That they gave Qasden an Ass-whooping on the road?”

Michael Hughes: “No it’s about how they play, what do you notice about their game”

Josh Abbott: “Uhh that they are dominating on defense.”

Michael Hughes: “Correct Josh, their team is one of the best defenses this year in the IBC. If we shut that down we can beat them. We also need to work on our own defense I’m seeing a whole lot of slacking on the defensive side of the ball”

Rick Garza: “But Mike, we like to score a lot of points. Why don’t we do what we have done the past few games and see if it works.”

Michael Hughes: “What happened last time we tried that against this team?”

The last game against the free republics flashed into everyone's mind and they all remembered the game where they got beat by almost 20 points. It was a disaster for the kalactanians they got beat in every department.

Michael Hughes: “We got our asses beat. If we want to compete with this team we have to shut them down on defense and shut them down hard. We need to get that in our heads, defense, defense, defense. Defense wins championships after all. Josh I need you to play lockdown defense on Patricia again.”

Ricky Garza: “No offense Michael but you where one of the main problems that game, you couldn’t stop their center from scoring.”

Everyone in the room nodded in agreement with Ricky’s remark. Michael had a very hard time shutting down Brandon Owens, the 7-3 center for the free republics. As the kalactanians walked out of the room they took what Mike had said to thought.

The Kriegiersien girls got their second win and the first for the nation in an away game. In North New South Wales they showed a much better performance than in the crypts at Ancient Tomb in the first game.

Valladares 70, Equestria 67.

A dramatic three-pointer by Marcelo Romero was all the Blue Jaguars needed to avoid a repeat of the previous meeting between both sides back in the first matchday, in which both sides played out to an exhausting overtime, and to put themselves ahead of Equestria in second place of Group E. This zone, arguably the "Group of Death" of this IBC edition, is now officially on fire with Valladares tying the Equestrians at 4-2 and currently edging them for second place in the group. Delaclava's 3-3 record has them still pretty much alive in this group. Meanwhile, Donnacona (1-5) are walking on thin ice following their loss to Banija, who unsurprisingly, are running away with the group with a perfect 6-0 record, while on the other hand Southwest Eastnorth have the exact opposite performance (0-6) and have already confirmed their elimination from the competition.

The game at Abbey Court was a teeth-clenched affair for both sides, especially for the hosts who were coming to this crucial game with the pressure to beat the Weavers in order to keep themselves alive in the fight for the second spot to the knockouts. The loss to Banija in their previous home game, while expected, helped reduce the margin of error for the side managed by Daniel Toro, with Delaclava picking up wins against the remaining unranked sides. Therefore, the Blue Jaguars couldn't afford themselves to fail against Equestria at home, especially after the events of their previous meeting. And the Valladars understood the mission from the very beggining of the game, lifting themselves to a 23-19 lead after the first quarter, with Carloburgo Knights center Henry Brüning giving Seaddle Subsonics players Akio Yoshida and Burning Sun a much harder time, as they struggled to control him unlike what happened in the first match between Blue Jaguars and Weavers. The second quarter saw a slight Equestrian reaction with a series of layups bringing them closer in the scoreboard, which at halftime still saw the Valladar team leading, now 36-34. Enthusiasm was now growing among the Valladar faithful at the arena, who started to believe in a possible win against the Weavers despite the narrow advantage. But the Equestrians were far from dead, and they proved that in the second half of the game, cutting the gap to just one point at the end of the third quarter thanks to an 8-point contribution by Ariel Lenheim and leaving the score at 52-51, and then equalizing 67-67 in the last quarter, with 30 seconds to go. However, Romero would have the last word on a rebound and scored the winning three-pointer for the Blue Jaguars, erupting yet another celebration at Abbey Court. The Jaguars had bitten the Weavers and had, somehow, leapfrogged the second seed of the Group of Death for second place, with four matches to go.

The Blue Jaguars will now travel to Atlantian Oceania to face Delaclava, who incidentally happened to be the other side that profited from this victory for Valladares in their Carloburgo fortress, and now place themselves within one game of both Blue Jaguars and Weavers. Another make-or-break game for Valladares, with two possible outcomes: to start getting rid of a contender for the final berth to the playoffs, or to leave the fight wide open for the three sides.

Jim Levins was uncharacteristically unfocused during his team's game. It was late in the third quarter, and Delaclava already held a 74-44 lead; the fans flooded into Hamilton Grand Gym and into bars around Delaclava expecting a rout, and the Phoenixes were not disappointing. Levins was basically spending half of his time making substitutions, getting his reserves ample time and repetitions on the floor, and the other half pestering one of the team managers for updates on the Valladares-Equestria game. The Valladares had led the whole game, but the gap was closing all the time.

By the time the middle of the fourth quarter passed by, Delaclava was ahead 85-53 and Equestria trailed by just 1 point with a quarter to go. Levins sent the manager to the locker room, with orders to drum up a stream of the game and have it waiting for the team when they got back. By this time, the Phoenixes had cottoned on to their coach's distracted behavior. They were still focused on closing the game, but figured something was up elsewhere in the IBC, and Levins' mood had gotten them a bit excited too.

When the final horn sounded, the Phoenixes performed the traditional handshake ritual with their outclassed opponents and jogged back into the locker room to keep up with Levins. They entered the room, and Levins simply motioned for them to take a seat, saying, "We'll talk about the game in a minute."

It was a nailbiter, and the Phoenixes cheered with every Valladar basket, groaned at each Equestrian score. The tension in the room was palpable, and now sports fans around the country were watching this game with interest. DSPN cameramen and crew had followed the Phoenixes into the locker room and fans could now see their own team's reaction to this basketball game, watching on as Marcelo Romero got the ball with enough open space to drain the final three of the game, sealing the Valladar victory 70-67. The Blue Jaguars went wild, and so did the Phoenixes - they jumped up, yelled and hugged, knowing a door that had been closed to them was now slightly ajar.

Levins sent the cameramen and reporters out of the locker room: time to talk to his team. "Ok, first of all, good win out there for us. That's what good teams do - step out, take care of business, don't spend any more time on them than we need to.

"Now.... you see what we're playing for? We did what we needed to do tonight. Equestria did not, and now we're a game out of second place. If we win out, we're in the next round. Even if we lose to Banija, we may be okay. But we stay in this gym to play them—" he gestured to the now-blank TV behind him, indicating the Valladars "—and we need to turn that game from a three-point loss to a three-point win.

"And we cannot have a repeat of the Equestria game. I don't care that Rick was hurt, we were not winning that game anyway. We'll be in front of our fans this time, and I may see about getting that game moved to Manchester. We want the biggest pro-Delaclav atmosphere we can get. And when you hear them cheering your name, you have to respond. Can we do that?"

"Yes sir!" the players replied.

"We have a second chance in this competition. Figuratively, we're playing with five fouls. One more slip and we're done. Do you understand?"

"Yes sir!"

"This is what we came for. Rick, get 'em in."

Captain Rick Jones and the rest of the team gathered around their coach. Rick took a deep breath, then roared, "Four more on three. One two three!"

"FOUR MORE!"

The players dispersed, and Levins stepped away. He looked down at his phone and smiled, seeing the situation with his own eyes. Valladares, 4-2. Equestria, 4-2. Delaclava, 3-3. Four games to go.

Game on.

Who are the best teams this IBC? That’s what we will find out tonight on Sporting News Kalactin.

Mike Perez: Hello, I’m Mike Perez and today we will be looking at the best teams so far during this IBC. I’m here with a few basketball experts from the Sporting News Kalactin panel that will be helping to interpret these results so far. Our first expert is Donald Ross. Hello Donald!

Donald Ross: Hey there Mike how’s it going?

Mike Perez: Good, we just want to ask you for you’re opinion on the situation so far this IBC.

Donald Ross: Ah okay, well one thing I can think that we can take away from this is that nobody is getting out of Group C easy. The best team in that group so far are The Free Republics who can look to easily win the group. Some teams that will probably end up qualifying for the group stage are Kalactin and Qasden however, Pemecutan has also had some strong showings lately and they could possibly come out of Group C.

Mike Perez: What’s you’re take on the play of the Kalactanians so far this cycle?

Donald Ross: Well I think they are taking it game by game, they have had some strong games but they have also had some games that they have shown many weaknesses in parts of their play highlighting the 2 losses to Pemecutan and Geekeom.

Mike Perez: How about this last game for the team?

Donald Ross: Well I think that it was a lowlight for the team as they showed themselves getting dominated in every part of the game by a ultimately more skilled Free Republics team. Michael Hughes was a very disappointing part of the game as he showed his struggle against Centers that are taller than him. The only good part of the game for the team was Charlie Larson who had a impressive 19 points and 8 rebounds, but he was clearly not enough for the team. The team needs to become much more consistent before they become a team that can make the playoffs year after year.

Mike Perez: Why do you think the team struggles in being consistent?

Donald Ross: It ultimately comes down to the players, when they players aren’t consistent the team isn’t either and I think the team needs to work on that a lot. It will boost the teams level substantially when their 2 best players, Michael Hughes and Jorge Sutton manage to play well game after game as a team. Jorge has looked to be more consistent than Hughes had but Hughes usually has the biggest affect when he plays well.

Domestic Expert

Mike Perez: Okay, now I’m going to switch over to domestic basketball news and to our domestic expert, Michael González.

MG: Hello, how does it go Mike.

MP: Good! Our first question is who is the strongest team in the NKBL this year?

MG: Well I have to side with the Yamba Basketball Club. They made a huge difference by trading for Rick Garza, I believe that with Garza and Sutton, Yamba will easily take the title this year.

MP: Some may say that is a bit ambitious for them to easily take the title?

MG: True, but when you look at it, it all makes sense. They are the only team in the league that has found 2 players that can dominate defensively along with a prolific scorer. Coffs does have a great team, yes, but they don’t have much in terms of guards that can shoot the ball or play perimeter defense.

MP: What’s the drop off going to be for Murwelldobah?

MG: Well they aren’t going to be at the level that they played at last year to say the least. The loss of Garza will bring them down to their knees on defense especially on the perimeter where Abbott can’t handle on his own. Abbott will still help them provide good offense for the team but overall, in 2 years they might not even be making the playoffs anymore. Abbott is 30 and winding down after a fantastic career and will not have the same effect as last year. At the most he might average 25 PPG and 5 APG but not near what he had last year.

MP: Will the most hyped prospect ever, Joe Green have much effect this year?

MG: I believe he will, Green has shown time and time again, despite his age he can excel against people older than him. Sure, there might be some growing pains into the league but he will help the Lismore team greatly by providing good shooting and Defense.

MP: Thank you all for joining us on Sporting News Kalactin tonight! See you tomorrow!

Vacolicci Haven & Celeria vs. Andromeda
Commodores Arena
Syracuse, Allied States
Match Day #7
3:00 pm

The game began two hours ago on a Sunday afternoon in Syracuse, home of the Andromeda Women’s Basketball League Champion Syracuse Lady Commodores. The four Commodores playing for the Eagles, Jane Russell, Odessa Paige, Hattie Williams and Kelly Waters, all started this afternoon to a near-capacity crowd. Rosie Johnson, the league’s leading scorer, also started at forward.

The Eagles led 55-39 at halftime. The coaches decided that the reserves would play most of the second half. Peg Harper, who had received limited minutes, started the second half with two straight three pointers. Harper left early in the fourth quarter with 18 points, shooting 4-for-5 from behind the three-point arc.

The Eagles lead at the end of the 3rd grew to 82-56. Quick Tillis and Jane Kano started the fourth quarter in the fourth quarter. Abby Salliewhite was the point guard. Liv Stuckey was the third guard. Harper was the shooting guard until Ruby Jordan replaced her early in the quarter.

Stuckey turned out to be the leading scorer in the quarter and the game, scoring 16 of her 21 points in the fourth.

Let’s look in on the last few plays of the game.

----------

With 1:30 left in the game, Salliewhite has the ball. She passes the ball to Stuckey. Odessa Paige sets a pick so Stuckey can get a clean shot. Stuckey capitalizes and scores.

After the Vacolicci quickly answer, Stuckey attempts a transition basket only to get fouled by their center. Unlike most players, Stuckey was hoping to get fouled. Firstly, it was the Vacolicci center’s fifth foul. Secondly, Stuckey is automatic as a foul shooter. She leads the Eagles in foul shooting, making nearly 95% from the free-throw line.

Stuckey went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Her lone miss wound up in the hands of Odessa Paige, who scored her 17th point.

Ruby Jordan intercepted what the Vacolicci thought would be their final inbound pass of the game. With most of the Vacolicci down court, the Eagles would end things with an easy bucket. Jordan passes to Salliewhite. Salliewhite attempts to get her 4th assists by bounding the ball off the floor, and the backboard, to Odessa Paige. Instead, the ball bounces off of the floor, rolls on the top edge of the backboard, bounces off the front rim, the glass, and the front rim again into the basket. Salliewhite shrugs her shoulders and laughs as the Eagles set their defense for the final inbound pass of the game.

“That’s for you, Meadowlark,” Salliewhite said as the final buzzer sounded. Salliewhite’s teammates run to her and give her high fives for her final basket.

----------

FINAL SCORE: Eagles 109, Vacolicci Haven & Celeria 69.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

#00 52 Liv Stuckey

Age: 26
Height: 5’8”
Team: Portsmouth Lady Pirates
2020 Stats: 13.3 ppg, 8.9 apg.

Olivia Stuckey helped the Portsmouth Lady Pirates regain their place as the dominant ball club on the Big Island. The league leader in free throw percentage, Stuckey also set a league record in foul shooting, making 75 consecutive free throws over the course of 13 games.

Stuckey played basketball at the University of Beta City. She led Beta City to the Andromeda collegiate tournament in her junior and senior season.

DROP IT DOWN!: A Road Bump Named "McOredale"

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon May 11, 2020 8:08 am

After the "Miracle of Riverside" against Valanora, many in the BFT were optimistic about the future of the team and basketball as a whole in TJUN-ia. The team were in McOredale to take on bottom-side Preiva, who had won their first game of the tournament yesterday.

As it turns out there is still work to do for the Hoops-Jags. Preiva were trying to prove they can play and the managed to do so. The team tried to overhaul their opponents but home advantage gets you a lot of things and Preiva took advantage to win this game by 4 points.

Now our hopes look bleak as we need both Xannaria and Sarzonia a falter in these last 3 games. We host Nouveau Quebecois in Riverside next, a game which could end our tournament for good. For TJUN-ia, we must stay alive. GO JAGS!

Kriegiersien 77–67 Petroslovania

With 10 points ahead the Kriegiersien men won their first match in The dome, finally showing their skills against a faceless opponent. Not dominating, but playing consistent.

The girls have now the big challenge to win against Lisander, who hosted the last final, where Drawkland won the IBC. In Lisander on the other hand any recognition of the IBC before the play-offs seems unlikely.
"I heard they rather watch college basketball or paint dry", said the Top Scorer, Center and clown of the men's team, Rogbut, an half-orc.
In most matches, the biggest problem of the team was that they had to play actively and shape the game. Even the big teams like Drawkland and Lisander haven't shown much and just rely on their pure strength.

"We really can't work with anything but their Lineup at best. Sometimes not even that. So we have to be creative on the field and often just make fools of ourselves but can't react on their actions. That is a bit sad, because this should be a cross-fertilizing and not a run against a wall. We have to make the show, attack and than we get a counter attack out of seemingly nothing, because we are out of ideas and make the mistakes", the Coach of the men's team, Arvid Florine, complained.

All things considered, a 2-1 away stretch that includes the two highest-ranked teams in Group G of the current International Basketball Championships was better than the Sarzonian national basketball team had a right to expect.

They dropped the final away match of that stretch by a 90-78 margin at the hands of Valanora, ranked No. 8 in the multiverse. It was a match the Stars never led, and were down as many as 22 early in the second quarter before they clawed their way back.

They did so, however, with power forward Trent Klatt and small forward Harold Blevins playing in a three-guard lineup because centre Calvin Baker refused to play after coach Thomas Manningham benched him in favour of centre Terry Rutledge. Manningham didn't say anything publicly to the media, but privately told associate head coach Mario Bengsten he was kicking Baker off the team for insubordination.

Thus, when the Stars touched down at Woodstock International Jetport and returned to the team hotel, Baker was not among the players who made the trip in their vehicles to the hotel. Baker's trip was to The Palestra, where he was met by guards wearing hazmat suits, masks, and gloves, and was escorted to his locker to fetch his things and leave.

Manningham explained to the assembled media that Baker refused to take off his warmups and hit the court when he was directed to by the coaching staff.

"I understand Calvin was upset about being removed from the starting lineup, but it was for matchup reasons against that specific opponent," Manningham said. "When he decided to sulk instead of contribute to the team, I had to make a point that we don't tolerate that behaviour on this team."

A spokesman for Baker declined to comment, saying that the player was exploring his options.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the City of Woodstock announced that a crowd of approximately 500 souls was cleared to appear at tonight's game at The Palestra in a relaxing of the extreme social distancing restrictions that prevented any supporters from watching the first three home matches of IBC qualifying at the Sarzonian venue following the outbreak of the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus. Except for immediate families or households in attendance together, all patrons were required to stay at a minimum of two metres apart within the venue at all times. In addition, all patrons were required to wear masks and other protective gear that has become all too familiar sights within the affected areas of the country.

"We felt the results of the vaccine researched by Delaclav scientists, along with the outcomes of the treatment regimen they and we developed for those who have suffered from complications related to the spread of the virus, were sufficiently positive enough for us to begin a careful restoration of some of the freedom to move," the spokeswoman said. "We will continue to monitor the situation carefully to ensure that this doesn't cause an additional spike in infections.

"The medical community have advised us that Woodstock General Hospital's emergency ward is now equipped to handle new cases of the virus, and we have opened the Greater Saugerties Medical Centre, which had been closed, to serve as a surge medical facility. We've also begun using the Max Yasgur Center for the Performing Arts as an emergency morgue until we can get enough space for those who have tragically lost their lives to this virus."

The team is reportedly "elated" at the decision to open The Palestra to fans, even on the extremely limited basis announced by Mayor Claudia Alta, with guard Mike West (who scored 22 points against the Dragons) shouting "yes!" and pumping his fist at the news.

THE ROCKET REPORT

REMEMBERING THE OLD GREATS- PART II OF A SERIES

by Taylor Larson,

Back in Baptism of Fire 30, there was one nation that got in the way of Secristan winning that championship, and no, it wasn’t Cassadaigua. The nation that reigned supreme over both of them was a nation known as Myedvedeya. That was a country in an exceptionally cold climate, that provided us some great sporting moments. It wasn’t all soccer, as they sported a pretty interesting basketball team as well. Now, in the second International Basketball Championships, they looked to do what the team they beat in the Baptism of Fire title game not too long before that was able to do, and win on the hardwood. Our host would be Dancougar, once again. The system that they had used to score the games in the first edition was deemed a success, so they would bring it back once again. Newmanistan was back and hoped for revenge on the Millionaires of Secristan. Qazox would be a part of it, and their sources were already concerned about Newmanistan and Secristan having a second “Penthoria River War”, and immediately wondered about what the influence of the performance from the first tournament would have in the second. Come now, as we move on in the history of the tournament to another that has been jolted away. Let’s recount International Basketball Championships, number two.

There would be fifteen signups for this competition, and the Dancougaran organizers utilized three groups of five in order to situate that teams. Like in the first tournament, all games were played within the entirety of Dancougar. The Rockets would end up in a group with Kose and the Turkomans, Taeshan, Miroxia, and Myedvedeya. Other participating nations saw Lovisa being in once again, as well as Cafundeu, Secristan, and Arroza. Another classic nation from the past was in this tournament: Rennidan. “Ranks” were only used for purposes of sorting teams in the pots, and not for the competition, so players from Newmanistan and Secristan in particular could not rest on their past laurels for the first tournament. They would end up being best known for their gridiron prowess as well, and you could kind of see a trend with the two youngest tournaments in the international sporting world at this time: the International Basketball Championships and the World Bowl. Nations who took part in the early World Bowls were the most willing to give Dancougar’s International Basketball Championships a shot. Qazox, despite initially showing interest in the tournament, would not actually sign up for it, and Sarzonia would skip this one. Jeruselem signed up, but never revealed a roster, so we were left to only our imagination as to what kind of players they would send.

In the first matchday, Newmanistan battled Kose and The Turkomans, an interesting meeting at the time, because it was the first time that we had seen them since defeating them in the championship of Baptism of Fire 27. It was a great battle, but the Rockets prevailed, 88-86. Next up was Taeshan, and it was at this time where the first realizations of our history, at least that point, against the Knights were taking place. We beat them in everything, all the time, anywhere, no matter what. Well, maybe there were some exceptions here and there, but you get the general idea. The chants of “You can’t beat us!” were beginning to become a regular thing, and in the game, history followed suit with the Rockets winning. The Rocket Report held a competition then calling it “Guaranteed Win Night”. Either Newmanistan would win, or The Rocket Report would give everyone free subscriptions for a year! Yes, back then we charged for it. It took overtime, and just because we had dominated them, it didn’t mean every game was a blowout. This was a level of dominance that we wish had continued since our return, especially in that final of World Bowl 34, but Taeshan got the better of us. Elsewhere in the tournament, the Secristani media was rocking in the same way that they always did, giving us some classic things to wager on. Kenavt, another nation deserving a mention here, was well into the tournament with interesting pieces to read, and Myedvedeya was also lurking as a major threat as they got into the tournament pretty strongly. Newmanistan would defeat them in the group stage, and went 4-0 in the group. Myedvedeya was 2-2, getting into the playoffs by virtue of a tiebreaker. Secristan, stunningly, was sent packing before the playoffs began. Rennidan and Dancougar followed suit.

The Rockets had an interesting first round battle with Arroza, and won the first game of the series. If this was the current format of the International Basketball Championships, then Newmanistan would have advanced, but it was a best of five. Suddenly, everything went south. It was deja vu for the team if you recall how it went in the final for us in the first IBC, taking the first game against Secristan, but losing the next three. This time, the Rockets fell in games two and three, though despite winning game four, Arroza took the fifth and advanced to the next round. It was a frustrating result, but you have to wonder, if not for the series format, would Newmanistan have had not just one but both of these first two tournaments? We know they would have won the IBC 1 title if it was not a series, but can’t make the same claim here because there would have been more to do after the Arroza game. Regardless, that is just something for us to wonder about, because you have to win in the format that you are given, and here the format was a best-of-five, and that honor went to Arroza. Joining them in the semifinals would be Myedvedeya; while the other semifinal had Lovisa and Magnus Valerius. They knocked out Jeruselem and Cafundeu, respectively. In a sense, all four of the quarterfinals were upsets based on how the group stage went. However, don’t think that Lovisa was just having things fall in their lap in this tournament, they were participating regularly.

Arroza seemed like they were in a great position after knocking off the Rockets. Everything about that squad was firing on all cylinders, but Myedvedeya was not going to go quietly. There was something special about that team, and that resiliency showed. They would knock off Arroza in five and were set to meet Magnus Valerius in the final. They had defeated Lovisa is four. The championship was not close, as the Myedvedeyans took care of business, sweeping their way home in the best of five series, and capturing the title for the second International Basketball Championships. Myedvedeya is a name that not many people will remember anymore. If you pull up a list of past winners in this tournament, or the Baptism of Fire, you will see their name and not think of anything, dismissing them as a flash in the pan. However, this nation gave us a lot of great moments during the abbreviated time in which they were a nation and participated in the international scene. They gave us some great contributions, and The Rocket Report is glad to bring them back to life again, even if just for this one tournament. It was cold there, but that would never stop them. Therefore, let’s not allow them to get jolted away into sporting oblivion.

As we look into the history of the tournament, in our next article, we will look into last tournament that was jolted away, the third International Basketball Championships. Like this one, it has moments that we should not simply forget about, and should look fondly back at them. Myedvedeya would be back, and ended up in a group of death with both the Rockets and Secristan. Dancougar, too, but at that time, Dancougar was not having success on the court, despite hosting. How would that group pan out? Or would new stars shine bright?

SPUDS STUN WORLD NUMBER ONE TO BLOW GROUP WIDE OPEN

Jeckland pulled off the greatest result in their history at the International Basketball Championships, beating former champions and world number one side Vangaziland 76-73 to continue their unlikely push towards the playoffs and put their opponents in real danger of a shock exit.

A thrilling game came down to the wire, with Vangaziland narrowly missing on the buzzer to tie the game up. Jeckland played incredibly, with their speed of ball movement a particular highlight in confounding their opponents. Their staunch defensive formations throughout ensured that no scores were given up easily, and there were wild celebrations from the travelling Jeckish support come the end of the game.

Despite the result the Spuds remain in 5th place but with a much greater chance of qualification than before. The first half of the group stage went poorly, with only a win against the Crystal Empire saving any face. Indeed, after the loss against Vakolicci Haven & Celeria in the fourth game many Jeckish fans were resigned to elimination, especially in the backdrop of protests at that game about the location of matches staged in Jeckland. However, a hugely improved performance against the Andromeda Islands renewed some hope, despite a heartbreaking last minute 66-63 defeat.

North Quadana appeared to be the group whipping boys, but had managed to defeat Jeckland in their last encounter. With the home advantage, this was a game Jeckland simply had to win - and they just about did, squeezing through 86-83. Whilst the performance wasn’t as good, at this point all that mattered was the result, which was followed up by today’s scoreline.

Vangaziland now find themselves in what is shaping up to be a four way scrap for one qualifying spot. The Andromeda Islands are clear in first with six wins out of seven and look certain to top the group. Jeckland’s fellow unranked team and surprise package Crystal Empire sit alongside the world number one on four wins, with Vakolicci Haven & Celeria alongside Jeckland on three.

The next set of fixtures will give a greater insight into who is likely to come out on top in this finely poised group, with the aforementioned four teams facing each other. The Spuds will host the Crystal Empire, a side they managed to beat in their last encounter. The Andromeda Islands will look to secure their advancement away at North Quadana, whilst the two highest seeds in the group will clash in another key match for second place, as Vakolicci Haven & Celeria host Vangaziland, who will be aiming to put a worrying streak of three losses to an end.

Ivo Ryskamp is a man far from basketball. Except that a couple of times while studying at the Royal School of Metallurgy, girls acquaintances pulled him out for student team games, and once more he with friends company came to one of the Alma Mater duels as part of the NSCAA championship, and did not even remember with whom exactly.
But in these days, he turned out to be the most directly involved in the affairs of Trolleborg basketball. He, as he graduated from RSM, walked along one path. In the old days he would have been called a welder, and this specialty was called so at the university, but in reality he managed a computer complex, which, in fact, make all welding and constructing works at the building sites without need of human hands, toils and sweat. Right now Ivo was at work was at the stadium named after December 1.

Ivo heard something about the great excitement in connection with the game of basketball national team, and knew from the TV news that in order to give as many people as possible opportunity to watch the games personally, the matches were transferred from the indoor Arena to a huge and open stadium. Naturally, it’s hard to imagine how, at this time of year, a field directly on the open sea wind - and the stadium is located directly on a cape between two stormy sea bays - can be played by basketball players who are used to completely different conditions.

The climatic machine, which usually provides weather at the stadium, is rather weak for this. During the NSCAA, another machine, more powerful, managed to provide a comfortable temperature during the match, which was held on the floor, which laid on top of the ice on the sea about five kilometers from the coast. But on this occassion it was required only provide needed conditions the field itself, locker rooms and five to seven rows of stands. But December 1 stadium is truly a cyclopean building, for which engineers need machine of rather colossal power, which is rarely needed, and it was Ivo just working to install, painstakingly checking each element. The state is ready to put everything and don’t spare any efforts to give people what they needed. And Ivo undoubtedly the best engineer in his field was tasked to make dream true. That's why he has been toiled at the facility for the third shift in a row. He don’t need to do that according to rules and instructions, but if people need it and the Motherland asks - I do, and nothing else matters.

STATISTICAL SUMMARY:
Kita-Hinode – Trolleborg 75:65 (17:16, 32:29, 55:42, 75:65).

In other games Puppeted States won against Nova Roma, and Newmanistan won his seventh game in a row. We are on the third place in the group, without much chances to qualifying.

From high to low,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

It was expected that there would be a lot of high points and low points in the 29th International Basketball Championships for Team Cassadaigua. Entering a competition for the first time is always difficult, and it is not much easier if you going back to it after a long time away. We saw that with how the team was crushed by the Fleftics in the opening game. It got better, somehow these young Fillies dug down and put together a three game winning streak. Heading to a game against Devonta, there was plenty of chance for the team to solidify their spot as a top two team if they were able to get that win. Unfortunately, that never happened, and the team was badly defeated by that opponent. At that point, when we lost, we certainly lost big. Then, something happened. That same group of Fleftics now made their way to Concord Heights, and we were up to the challenge. I don’t know how we did such a 360 in that game, but the 79-72 win was a stunner, led by a fantastic game by Daniella Thiess and Lauren Rafferty defensively. We have a young roster, and one of the things you hope with a young team is that they can learn from their mistakes. Against Abanhfleft, we certainly did.

Now, we must learn from another mistake. This time, a loss that was a blow out, but due to not hitting free throws. Daniella Thiess made just 4 of 12 free throws for the game, a terrible number, and when the game was on the line, HUElavia was smart to keep putting Daniella on the line. It is not as if she is always bad at this, as she shoots 73% from the charity stripe, but after hitting just one of her first six, this was not her day, and it played with her head. Tara Hamby was 12-for-16 from the free throw line, but a pair of missed free throws in the final two minutes of play were a costly opportunity. Defensively, the Fillies did well enough against HUElavia, with their precision from the line combined with our ineptness is the reason we lost this game, and not because of Mohamed Alcaide’s jumper with 1.9 seconds left. We should have put the game away by then. We’re usually much better, like I said, but that was not the case today. Coach Kelsey Jackson said the obvious afterwards, being that there will be extra time devoted to free throw shooting at the next practice.

Keeps Getting Better

Campuhan - Pemecutan Basketball team get a modest result after the first half of the Group Stage. After the first 5 matches, Pemecutan landed on 4th place with 2 won and 3 losses. They were shockingly won against Northwest Kalactin while the other come from match against Wielka Rzesza Sealandzka. And the other 3 matches were all ended in losses which are against Qasden, Gekkeom and Free Republics.

Starting the second half of Group Stage, Pemecutan again play with a modest result. Pemecutan able to avenge their lost from the first meet against Gekkeom. In the first meet, Pemecutan lost 11 points from Gekkeom with 79-90. While in the second meeting, Pemecutan play much better and able to avenge their lost by 69-91. A 22 points difference. But unfortunately, they have to lost against Wielka Rzesza Sealandzka in their second meeting. The match against Sealandzka is very tight. The normal match time is ended in a draw. During the over time, Sealandzka play better and gets upper hand which makes Pemecutan lost the match.

Pemecutan will face a hard match against Free Republics. In their second meeting, they don't have much expectation from the match. In their first meeting, Pemecutan was crushed by 58-93. After 7 matches, Pemecutan place at 3rd with 3 wins and 4 losses. Above them are Free Republics with a swept 7 wins and in the second place is Northwest Kalactin also with 3 wins and 4 losses.

Interview With Michael Hughes

Michael Perez: Hello all, I am Michael Perez and today we will be having an interview with the best player in Northwest Kalactin, Michael Hughes! Hi there Michael how’s a going.

Michael Hughes: Hey there!

MP: So our first question for you is about the Kalactanian Domestic League. How do you think the Domestic Leagues are doing right now?

MH: Well I think that the Kalactanian league is doing great. The NKBL has built up a plethora of young talent to choose from and that helps the national teams out also. I also think that the league is getting better in international play every coming year. You see prospects like Joe Green and Oluwaesung Tionge who are dominant in college and they come in and play the same way in the NKBL.

MP: What is you’re opinion on the next best prospect, Joe Green?

MH: he’s a real good kid that has a lot of potential in the league. He has so much potential with his shot that he could easily become the best basketball player in Kalactanian history. I can see him playing guard for the Kalactanian national team even next year. He is a great player with a ton of potential.

MP: How do you think the Kalactanian National Team can get better?

MH: Well I think that getting more consistent will help a ton for the team. We are not a very consistent team and that will hurt us down the road a lot.

MP: Do you think that Basketball is a popular sport in Kalactin?

MH: Well most people think that it is not even a top 5 sport. I think that if the NT gets good enough that we could get kids to have a lot of interest in the sport. When you look at sports in Kalactin you see sports like Soccer and Gridiron at the top but we can become a big sport in Kalactin.

The Green Grove Motel – Sermon Park
The night before Game Day 9
Sermon Park Neighborhood
Portsmouth, Allied States

Shawonda Brownlee and Liv Stuckey both live in Portsmouth, so they’re spending the night at home. The remaining Andromeda Eagles are staying at a budget hotel in Sermon Park, a neighborhood close to the border between Portsmouth and Beta City. The Eagles will play their final home game of IBC Qualifying at Todd Stadium tomorrow night. They originally planned to book a nicer hotel closer to the stadium, but due to their recent IBC success, accommodations close to Bill Todd Memorial Stadium were sold out. The Eagles hadn’t anticipated doing quite this well in the IBC.

The down side: the Hotel is a 35 minute drive from the Stadium in downtown Portsmouth. The up side: Thankfully, few people outside of the Eagles and the Green Grove Hotel staff know that the Eagles staying there. While some of the Eagles enjoy their newfound celebrity status, some of the others chose to embrace a rare night when they didn’t have to represent the Andromeda Island Group. For one night, they could just be normal.

Melissa Long had scored 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Eagles 89-72 win at North Quadana a few nights ago. Long is also hard to miss in a crowd, towering over the average Andromedan male. She heard that she was named Player of the Game by the Andromeda News Network’s Sports Hour staff during the flight home. As a small celebration, she decided to break her strict diet and order pizza from the local pizza place. She decided to visit some of the other players on her way to the front desk.

She walks into Odessa Paige’s room where Paige and Hattie Williams are staring at a television. Jane Russell is playing with a remote control. Apparently, they had ordered pizza earlier.

“Hey, Melissa. You want to join us,” Russell asks. “As soon as we get this thing to work, it’s ‘Petey Does Portsmouth’ time.”

“You up for a piece of The Rock,” Hattie Williams asks.

“Pete Rock’ll be up for it,” Paige adds.

Long starts to cringe.

“I think I’ll pass,” Long says.

As Long walks passed the next room, she assumes that it’s Sadie Smith & Kelly Waters’ room. Smith had recently signed with the Syracuse Commodores for next season. After hearing some peculiar noises from their room, Melissa Long concludes that Kelly Waters was instrumental in getting Sadie Smith to sign with Syracuse.

As Long walked to the stairs, she saw Quick Tillis talking with a much shorter man. They were carrying Chinese takeout back to Tillis’ room.

“That’s Melissa.”

“The center. Melissa Long. You put on a clinic in North Kaddana.”

“I’ve seen you around. You’re Leslie’s boyfriend?”

“Bass Reeves.” He extends his hand.

“Assemblyman Bass Reeves of Joppa.”

“I’ve been to a lot of your games,” Reeves says, shaking Long’s hand. “In Joppa and Andromeda City.”

“My boyfriend is a big basketball fan.”

“I’m just going to get pizza, then I’ll turn in.”

“We’re turning in too. Have a good night.”

“You too, Leslie. Nice to meet you, Assemblyman Reeves.”

Long leaves Tillis and Assemblyman Bass Reeves to it.

“She’s taller than I thought. And her feet… they are huge.”

“Shut up, Bass.”

----------

As Long heads back upstairs with her pizza and coke, Abby Salliewhite passes her in the hallway. She’s carrying a couple of sodas from the coke machine down the hall.

“Melissa, you got pizza too?”

Sal’s Famous Pizzeria, independently owned, does a lot of business in Sermon Park and West Portsmouth.

“Yeah. My diet’ll suffer, but it’s only one day.”

“Ruby, Jane and I just figured out the remote control to the TV and we’re about to watch a movie.”

“Is that Melissa,” Jane Kano yells from Abby’s room. “She should come in.

“Which movie,” Long asks.

“The new Star Trip movie that’s out now.”

Long thought for second. She was looking forward to eating a few slices and falling asleep while watching a movie that had nothing to do with basketball.

“I know it’s Sci-Fi, but it’s not too weird, right?”

Long has seen all of the previous Star Trip movies.

“There’s some thinly veiled political commentary, but nothing too weird,” Salliewhite says.

“It’ll help us to Live Large & Prosper,” Jordan says.

Kano and Salliewhite both laugh. Both of them are Trippies and know the proper quote.

“Is there any basketball”

“No!”

After the way Kano, Jordan and Salliewhite gave a loud, unified emphatic negative, Long decided that a little informal team bonding wouldn’t be so bad.

“Well, the needs of the many do outweigh the needs of the few.”

Long holds her hand in the traditional Fulkan way. At that moment, Salliewhite and Kano realize that Melissa Long is all right.

Hearing cheers for them was a new experience, even if they were small and scattered throughout The Palestra.

With the slight relaxing of social distancing restrictions by the city of Woodstock, a crowd of 500 fans gathered in a venue that seats 21,730 at capacity for the Sarzonian national basketball team's return to its home court after a three-match away trek. They saw the Stars pull away from Prieva with an 81-68 victory that allowed them to keep pace with Xanneria, who pulled off a 78-77 upset away to group leaders Valanora.

The results leave both Sarzonia, currently ranked 82nd in the multiverse and No. 23 Xanneria level at 5-3. The Stars would earn the berth in the knockout rounds by virtue of their two victories in head-to-head matches against Xanneria if the results hold up.

Meanwhile, the Stars got a 30-point effort from shooting guard Mike West, who also notched five assists and seven rebounds and played all over the court. Point guard Ben Thomas added 13 points and six assists, but missed time due to a twisted ankle in the first half. There was no swelling and the pain quickly went away.

Coach Thomas Manningham said the team was going to be motivated for its final away match of the qualifying stage against Nouveau Quebecois because the unranked side beat them at home.

"We're aware that we lost to this team earlier," he said. "They beat us at our place and we can't afford to take anything for granted this time around."

Manningham would not answer questions about former starting centre Calvin Baker filing a lawsuit against the team and him for his decision to kick Baker off the team following a temper tantrum when Baker was benched in favour of Terry Rutledge, referring media to the Incorporated Basketball Federation's chief counsel.

"I can't comment on pending litigation," Manningham said. "That's all I can say about that."

As for the relaxed social distancing restrictions, a spokeswoman for Woodstock mayor Claudia Alta said the city was monitoring hospitalization rates and initiated contact tracing for the 500 fans in attendance at The Palestra. She added that "admittedly intrusive" tracing would be "the new reality" for fans who attend sporting events in Woodstock and throughout Sarzonia until health officials can be sure that the virus doesn't spread.

"We're aware that some supporters expressed concerns about their civil liberties being threatened by the contact tracing regimen," spokeswoman Johnetta Halsey said. "In order for us to ensure the health and safety of all Woodstockers, we are instituting these measures, though we hope that they won't be necessary for very long."

Woodstock City Police reportedly made five arrests of people protesting the stay-at-home orders instituted by Alta. She said the protesters were "unfathomably stupid and selfish."

"This isn't about you," Alta said. "This is about your family, your neighbours, your friends, the city, the country. We're looking out for all of us to ensure that we all get to enjoy the freedom to go where we want when we want without worrying about social distancing."

She added that she was frustrated, too.

"Believe me, I'd love to get my hair done and my nails done. I could use a spa day," she said. "But we're all making sacrifices to ensure the health and safety of Woodstockers and Sarzonia as a whole. That's always going to be my top priority."
