Banija survives opening game of the IBCs as basketball's 'group of death' gets underway

Image
A Banijan player prepares to in-bound the basketball against the backdrop of the Donnacona supporters section

BOTLEY, DONNACONA- That was certainly one hell of a basketball game. Going into the tournament, after the draw, there was an audible groan that could be heard from the Banijan basketball verse. Not because the opponents weren't exciting- in fact, it was quite the range of opponents that were drawn that ensured this would be an exciting group stage. Donnacona is probably the best unranked side at the tournament, and we have them? We're playing Equestria twice, who we seem to be barely able to beat in anything? What about Delaclava as another unranked side, one of the highest-ceiling unranked sides here? We probably have the two unranked teams with the highest ceilings both in our groups. Equestria has one of the multiverse's best basketball leagues, and, of course, that also means we have to play against Valladares as well. And Southwest Eastnorth(which is a long way of just saying Center, I guess?) rounds off the group.

This won't be a walk in the park for the Lions. No- it's going to be a brutal slog to get to the knockout stages. It's always tough in this sport. Six teams in the group, just two to enter the knockout stages. Thank the heavens we're Pot 1, I guess, but if we want to accomplish our goals, it's going to have to be earned. Isaiah Lavaga spoke about that himself. "We've never been shy about what we want to do- if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and we'll play whoever they tell us to play. Undoubtedly this is the tournament's group of death- there can be no denying that. Some people might say that's a handicap. Of course, that means there are no guarantees about even getting to Equestria- outside of Matchday 10, I guess. It's a tough group with an unforgiving format- six come in, only two move on.

But the teams who do move on, out of this group and into Equestria, will be some of the best prepared for a deep run there. They'll have certainly been battle-tested. They'll have played a number of close games, they'll have played high-quality opponents. They'll have experienced a lot of the ups and downs that can come in a long group stage- better preparing them for the brutal nature of single-elimination tournament basketball. Everyone here knows our goals. That's the benefit of being in a group like this. The risk, of course, is obvious- much better chance we're watching the knockout stages from the comforts of your couch. Do I have a preference? It doesn't really matter what my preference of group is, since I don't pick them. This is the group we have, and we're going to make the best of it. Our goals do not change- just the path to get there will be that much harder."

Let's dive right into this game. It was a tight one in front of the rocking venue of Hudbank Arena. There was a lot of energy, as the basketball crazed nation was ready for their first foray, as Donnacona, into the International Basketball Championships. Amadou Secka got a big, warm cheer from what is normally his own home crowd. And now, right basketball. Donnacona got the better of Banija for basically the entirety of the first half. They jetted out to a 7-0 lead, with a pair of buckets followed by a three point play from Luka Kjaer. Kjaer did basically whatever he wanted for large parts of the game- Saihou Uster couldn't do much of anything to slow down the man who Donnacona ran the offense through. The home team led for the entire first half, keeping the Lions at bay. They took a 46-40 lead into halftime, with their fans thinking upset.

A 46-40 lead at the half, in favor of the home side. And they continued to build on their advantage in the third quarter. With about 5 minutes left in the quarter, after Kjaer hit his first three pointer of the game, the Banijans were forced to call timeout. Down 54-45, with this loud, raucous building really getting into the game, this one was starting to slip away from the Banijans. Nobody wanted to start 0-1 and put themselves into an early hole. The Banijans came out of the timeout with a small ball lineup. Akabueze at the 1. Secka at the 2. Uster playing small forward, Ezekiel Bullo playing power forward, and Nabongo at center.

Not a lineup you can run out there forever- but sometimes, going small situationally can provide your team a spark. And boy, did Lavaga's move pay off. They came out absolutely blistering. On that first possesion, Akabueze found Secka slicing towards the rim, who was able to finished a contested lay-in with all those defenders around him. Coming down the floor, a lazy pass from the Donnacona point guard was stolen by Saihou Uster. He raced down the floor, in a 2 on 1 with Akabueze, and he fed the ball to the young point guard for the easy lay-in. 54-49. The next possession suffocated the Donnacona players, ensuring that they'd end up jacking up a contested three at the end of the shot clock. The long rebound went to Ezekiel Bullo. ON the other end, Amadou Secka ran a pick & roll with Nabongo, who rolled down to the rim. He found him with the brilliant bounce pass, and then Nabongo both finished at the rim and was fouled. One made free throw later, and it was just a two point game.

But the Banijans were not done. After another brick from the Donnaconna offense, they were coming down the floor once again. Nabongo came up to the free throw line, and got the basketball. As the defense closed on him, he quickly turned and flung the ball out to Saihou Uster, whose man had drifted away from him towards Nabongo. The star defender rose and nailed a three pointer. For the first time all game, the Banijans had a lead, up by one, 55-54. And yet, they were not done, even there. The following possesion saw Amadou Secka get to the rim, once again, and this time got fouled.

A second three point play, as he swished his free throw, and the Donnacona coach was forced to call a timeout. A 13-0 run to turn a 9 point deficit into a 4 point lead. The two teams were extremely close the rest of the game- neither team would lead by more than 5 after that run. The Banijans took the lead for good at the 7 minute mark in the fourth quarter. And even as the game winded down, it came down to clutch plays from their veterans to seal this win. 20 seconds left in the game, up 78-77, shot clock winding down- and there is Labanzi Nabongo, hitting a fadeaway to make it 80-77. There was Wassa Itraba, stepping up for a lockdown defensive possession against Luka Kjaer, as Uster had been dominated by his opponent all game. There was Bartaba, getting the rebound with 6 seconds left, and quickly getting the ball to Mr. Automatic from the free throw line, Amadou Secka.

And then, with 5 seconds left, Secka, ice running through his veins, draining both free throws. And that was the final score- 82-77. A tough, hard-earned opening victory of the International Basketball Championships for the Lions. Secka said he was happy with it. "Oo, what an environment we just played in!" He said. "But a good win for us. We weren't at our best, for sure- Donnacona had us figured out for large stretches. But when it mattered most, we stepped up, we did what we had to do. All wins look the same in the table- we're 1-0. I'm excited to get back to Busukuma for our home opener after this. What a fun one that will be!" We'll see how the Lions fare when they take on Southwest Eastnorth at the Kabaka's Court in Round 2.

Older players lash out following loss,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

When you lose a basketball game by the score of 102-64, you can expect that there will be a lot of people criticizing your effort. When a bunch of people don’t believe that you should be on the team in the first place, and have an axe to grind with you before you even played the game, then things might not get pretty. If you read the mostly Spacebook, but some on Twii’tur as well chatter, then those posts were more entertaining then the game itself for Cassadaigua. Despite the lopsided final, the Fillies were quick out of the gate, jumping out to an 11-4 lead and really looking great against Abanhfleft, the top team in the group. By the way, we know who the Fleftics are, we have seen them in most every sport now. They have an outstanding sports program across the entire platform of sports that are played. Keeping that in mind, do know that basketball may be their best sport out of all of them. Perhaps football (the one some call gridiron), is as well, but it was a very difficult opening assignment to say the least.

With Cassadaigua up 11-4, Jan Harris of Abanhfleft called a timeout and had a few words for his team. On the Fillies bench, Kelsey Jackson was pleasant and was very happy with the initial effort. When play resumed, the massacre began. From that point, the Fleftics would go on a 46-14 run and would end the first half with a 50-22 lead. There was absolutely nothing that Cassadaigua could do to stop this barrage. Every player on the Fleftics was thoroughly dominating the game and those who were watching in Cassadaigua could not stand the sight of it, and were probably making jokes about it by the time we got to halftime. That is when the social media posts just got crazy from older players at home who feel as though they were looked over because of their age with coach Kelsey Jackson only going with young players. When things only got worse in the second half, with Abanhfleft leading 82-36 at one point (their biggest lead at any point in the game), those posts amplified. The result would have been more in their favor, but Jan Harris seemed to call off the dogs and went with bench players for the rest of the game. The Fillies were at least able to be moderately effective against them. After the match, Kelsey Jackson told reporters that, “You had two things going on here, one being our first game in a very long time, and the overall experience of Abanhfleft. They wanted to make a statement, and playing us would be a great way to do it, since when one looks at the score, they’re not going to think they destroyed just anyone playing their first game, they did it to Cassadaigua.” Kaitlin Benson, the starting shooting guard would state at the time, “We now know how high the bar is in order to be better in his competition. We’ll be better against them when we see them in Concord Heights.”

Veteran players were not as nice, with 31-year old Linda Bourne, the player who engaged with Benson before the competition, posting that, “This game is a total embarrassment. Those spoiled brats are shaming the uniform in which they are wearing.” It should be noted that Bourne is not teammates with any of the national team players at home. Another player, Morgan Hundley, a 32-year old who is a teammate of starting center Lauren Rafferty would post, “With all respect to Lauren, anyone who thinks that is the best team that we have to offer is sadly mistaken. I am not saying I belong on the team, but when you are playing an inexperienced squad like that, it should not be a surprise that Abanhfleft is annihilating them.” Other posts were made along those lines, and despite the score, it did not stop Kaitlin Benson from responding to each of them. Saying to Bourne, “Why don’t you just shutup and worry about your own game, because it’s going downhill,” and to Hundley, “Inexperienced? (Shows picture of NSCAA 9 title ring). We have experience. What do you have?” As Benson has shown off her ring often in response to the veteran players, it prompted posts from older players, and some fans that there is a big difference between the NSCAA tournament and the IBC, but Benson was not hearing any of that, calling it valuable, and calling it something that the older players don’t have. However, it was not only Benson retaliating, as Daniella Thiess also stepped up on Spacebook, “Sick and tired of the people who we are supposedly meant to look up too throwing a social media temper tantrum. We’re on this team, so deal with it or don’t watch.” Fans of course, picked on the “don’t watch” part of the pretty well, responding that they will be glad to not watch anymore if the team plays as they did against the Fleftics.

With this result now official, we have to wonder, will it get better? A home match against HUElavia is next, and hopefully it will be a chance for the young team to recover from the debacle of last night.

Nuclear Fallouts' reaction to game:
The Nuclear Fallouts lossing, after their first game, by nine points, realizes that they will need to train more. They adjusted the schedule to hone skills they have easier. They also invest into scouting for next season.

DROP IT DOWN!: I Mean, Duh!

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon May 04, 2020 9:23 am

When your first ever competitive fixture in your basketball history is away at the 8th ranked team in the multiverse, you have an expectation that you will probably get beaten up like you're a bunch of sacks. That was the expectation of many in TJUN-ia going into the game against the Dragons of Valanora and that's exactly what happened.

The pre-match pep talk carried a simple message: try and get as close to the Dragons as the can. And we certainly tried, don't get me wrong. Our players played their hearts out, but the Dragons were never going to lose.

Still, it's not the worse thing that happened tonight. We only scored 54 points, but the Crystal Empire only managed 51. We lost by 31 points, but the returning Cassadaigua lost by 38. We were bad, but we weren't the worst. But hey, we have an excuse. We were playing our first ever game against the 8th ranked team, on the road. Of course, we would get beat down. But we can improve as the tournament goes on.

We now come back home for the first game at the new Unity Center in Riverside as we host fellow unranked Preiva. One of us is gonna get their first win in competitive play, so let's hope our Jaguars can get the job done. GO JAGS!

What else could the man who has everything ever want?

The man in question was a certain Jazz Higgs, and everything was the basketball trophies he had amassed over his career. In terms of Fleftic basketball glory, Jazz had won almost everything in terms of both individual and team awards: Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, All-Star MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Slam Dunk Champion, Three-Point Shootout Champion, and Finals MVP. He had four FBA Championships (the latter three being the result of a three-peat), and most importantly of all, he had an International Basketball Championship. But while Jazz would love to say that the IBC was the centerpiece of his trophy cabinet, that would unfortunately be a lie. And his mama certainly didn't raise no liar. The truth of the matter was that the FBA titles just mattered to him that much more, especially the three-peat.

Not that Jazz wasn't appreciative of having been part of the Abanhfleft squad that had finally won it all in Quebec back in IBC 21. Of course he was ecstatic when the Rebolusyonaryos had beaten Valanora to take the title. But that team had really been more about the likes of Hayden Dorola and Leonidas Baxter, names that are now more than sure to go down in the history of Fleftic basketball as being among the greatest, if not the greatest of all time. Jazz had been a bit player in the squad back then, backup center to the backup center Giorgio Katatonoios. Some had even said that his inclusion was just some sort of publicity stunt due to his lineage (Kanyean on his mother's side and Drawk on his father's). Jazz had quickly proven everyone who had thought that about him wrong, at least in terms of the FBA.

The IBC was a different matter altogether. No matter how hard they tried, Abanhfleft were just unable to replicate the success of IBC 21. Eventually even Ivan Opanasenko, the Rebs' long-time coach for over a decade, finally decided to call it quits just after Abanhfleft's qualification to IBC 29 in exchange for the just slightly less stressful job of coaching the CSKA Tiraspol basketball team in his native Pridnestrovia. But the man whom the Samahang Basketbol ng Abanhfleft had hired to replace Opanasenko was also no stranger to success on the hardcourt, both as a player and as a coach. The new coach of the Rebolusyonaryos was none other than Jan Harris, former small forward for the Releinthi Chiefs, the Mykorrigan MonStars, BC Admiral Novorossiysk, and the Abanhfleft Rebolusyonaryos. Harris was just fresh from winning the Pridnestrovian Basketball Super League championship with Novorossiysk as their head coach when the SBA approached him to take over the Rebs from the departing Opanasenko.

Jan Harris took the job without hesitation. He knew that this kind of opportunity, the chance to coach Abanhfleft in the IBC, came only once in a blue moon. He also knew that if he could lead the Rebs to a second international title, that would completely erase all doubts about him only being a passenger in the time of Leo Baxter. Harris didn't hate Baxter; quite the opposite in fact. Harris and Baxter had been friends ever since high school, when they had helped Volga Volta High School of Riuwiee to the Capital Islands High School Championship. And even when they were rivals on the hardcourt in the FBA, both men never let the rivalry spill out of the courts.

Of course, now was a completely different time. Leo Baxter was now driving stock cars in NSSCRA, and while he wasn't exactly tearing it up out there like he had done to the courts in Abanhfleft, he was still enjoying himself and having the time of his life. Jan Harris, on the other hand, was a man with a mission. He wanted to prove himself, show that he was an international-caliber coach. People were still looking down on him because he had only ever won titles in the PBSL, whose quality of play was considered suspect at best when compared to the FBA. If Jan could win an IBC in his very first campaign as Rebs coach, then that should shut some noisy motherfuckers up.

Jazz Higgs himself was also on a mission. He wanted to show that he could not only lead a team to an FBA championship but also an IBC ring. Yes, he already had a ring of his own, but that had been won when Abanhfleft's main men were Hayden Dorola and Leo Baxter. Jazz thought himself to be a humble person, but he also wanted to escape the shadows of those two titans of the Fleftic game. He didn't want to be just compared to them; he wanted to stand amongst the greats. Whether that was doable or not was still up for debate, of course, but Jazz knew that if he won a second ring for Abanhfleft, that debate could end quicker than expected.

Two men on a mission for glory, for recognition, for victory. The International Basketball Championship was up for grabs. And for Jan Harris and Jazz Higgs, the road to glory starts at the Fleftic Arena in Riuwiee against Cassadaigua. This was most certainly going to be a bumpy ride.

Postby Valladares » Mon May 04, 2020 2:00 pm

The return of Valladares to the International Basketball Championships offered the Blue Jaguars a lofty challenge, as they were drawn into what is arguably the Group of Death of this edition, along with 4th-ranked Banija, 11th-ranked and hosts of this IBC edition Equestria, fellow returnees Delaclava, and a couple of up-and-coming teams in the form of Donnacona and Southwest Eastnorth. And to make things even more uphill, they would have to visit Equestria for their first group stage match. Although the Valladars, ranked 34th, entered the court at Seaddle Arena as heavy underdogs, they were able to give the Weavers a run for their money in a hard-fought match and in the end, only lost 83-81 after overtime.

Despite only seating 7,750 people, the home of the Seaddle Subsonics and its impressive acoustics made it felt like there were thrice that amount of fans. And the Equestrians, naturally propelled by their faithful started the game strongly, taking a 15-5 early lead with Ariel Lenheim leading the offensive efforts for the Weavers. However, the Blue Jaguars would react to this early domination by taking the game to the Equestrian half of the field, as well as turning on the connection between Carloburgo Knights' small forward Roberto Romano and center Henry Brüning, which enabled Valladares to cut the gap with the Weavers. Brüning recalled his previous brilliant performances with the Knights against the Subsonics in IUBC competition and made sure to embitter the Equestrian fanbase before halftime, bringing the Blue Jaguars within one point. However, the Weavers went to the break with a 43-42 lead, albeit a very narrow one.

The game resumed in pretty much the same fashion as it ended, a back-and-forth affair with the Weavers attempting to pull themselves away in the scoreboard and the Blue Jaguars hitting back to keep the game close. At the same time, the Subsonics-Knights club rivalry was being extended with Subsonics players Akio Yoshida and Burning Sun being involved in a particular duel with their Knights counterparts Romano and Brüning. But while the end of the third quarter was approaching, the Equestrians managed to get an edge over the brave Valladar side, and a three-pointer by Lenheim helped them go up by four points, 60-56, ahead of the decisive final quarter. The situation for Valladares in the final quarter didn't seem to improve, with the Weavers increasing the gap to 6 points, and forcing coach Daniel Toro to call timeout to re-organize the Blue Jaguars' strategy. The timeout seemed to work since the Valladars re-started play with some renewed energy, while at the same time, cut the momentum the Weavers had built. Brüning staged the comeback for Valladares with a couple of two-pointers, but just as the clock was expiring and the Equestrian fans were prepared to celebrate their first victory, a buzzerbeater by Ronald Ríos left things tied 74-74 and forced overtime to be played, to the elation of the Valladar staff and fans that had made the trip to Equestria.

After a motivational talk from coach Daniel Toro, the Blue Jaguars resumed play with the intention of building up a quick advantage in order to hold on to victory. At this point, the 34th-ranked team of the multiverse already looked less than that and more like a top 15 team able to compete on par with their fellow Equestrian counterparts. However, an early three-pointer by Yoshida put the Blue Jaguars trailing again, from which they would not be able to recover for the remainder of that five-minute period. Valladares managed to cut the gap to two points, but the 83-81 score was enough to give the Weavers their first win of the group.

Although they have started 0-1 in the Group of Death, the decent exhibition by the Blue Jaguars in Equestria gives some hope the team will be able to give some fight for a berth to the knockout rounds. They might not qualify, but surely they won't go down without a fight. In the meantime, Valladares will now be heading home to host Delaclava (1-0) in Carloburgo, hoping to get their IBC campaign back on track with a win in front of their faithful. On the other hand, Equestria will play their second home match of the tournament, waiting for a Donnacona side who gave some fight to top seeds Banija in their IBC début.

THE ROCKET REPORT

THE TOURNAMENT HAS BEGUN

by Taylor Larson,

For Newmanistan, Group B play tipped off in the nation of Kita-Hinode, and I was surprised to see a good amount of Rockets fans that made the trip to the country. They got everything they could have wanted in the victory, as Newmanistan controlled the match from start to finish, winning 92-68 against the nation with the next best rank in the group. Looking at rank exclusively to determine which way a tournament may go is not always the best idea. Newmanistan’s road victory against them is significant, and a great way to start things off. I will recap the game in a little bit, but the reactions of the players after wards say a lot about what this game meant.

“Absoutely amazing,” Byron Storm told reporters, “we came into their house wanting to get a big win, and we just had our way with them. I know they are a better team, but to get this kind of result when the tournament begins, it doesn’t get much better!” Teammate Lucas Bennerman, playing in his first ever International Basketball Championships contest was equally excited, “We controlled the boards, and I tell ya when we do that, there’s no one in the world that can beat us.” Now, before other nations look to attach to their bulletin boards, they should remember the makeup of this team. Newmanistan is an outside shooting team that doesn’t often play as well in the paint. Rebounding is a key component to this team, so all Lucas is saying is that when what is usually a weakness becomes something that they can control, then Newmanistan’s chances of getting a win are much better. So, if anyone wants to use that as bulletin board material, you have to let us control the boards in the first place. I don’t advise that, because chances are the better teams in the competition are going to outrebound us. There will probably still be some people who get pumped up by that quote, and let them do it.

Bennerman was too much for the player that was guarding him, and unfortunately the list of names of the Kita-Hinode squad was not available to us. I tried to talk to members of their press, and worked really hard to at least get a game program somewhere, but there were none available. Searching on the internet did not work, either. The sky blue opened up a 6-0, then 22-10 lead right from the start of the match, and would not be denied. The star of the game was Warren Peyser, and when he is hitting the long bombs, this team is going to do well. Many fans in attendance were amazed at where Peyser was putting up the shots from, and the Kita-Hinode squad did not seem well prepared to guard him the way you need to guard a Newmanistanian player. Peyser hit his first four shots that would have been from four-point range in Newmanistan, and would have a total of 32 points for the game. Bennerman had 19, and added 14 rebounds. After the match, head coach James Parsons simply credited the team for sticking with the plan, “We did not do anything we usually don’t do. It was working and we stuck with it. I know this team is determined to get a strong result in this tournament, and would love to win the whole thing. I don’t see why we can’t.” It will be key for the Rockets to not get big heads after this result, because everyone else is going to be shooting for them, as well.

The tournament now heads to Newmanistan, and the home opener will be at the Proving Grounds. The game is sold out inside the arena, but the overflow seats are obviously still available. No other games will be going on at the facility while the basketball game takes place. Juvencus is the opposition, and they have had some moments in the sport, but it’s a game that the sky blue will be hoping to win. I hope to see you there!

Delaclava 84, Southwest Eastnorth 65

Delaclava 22 - 25 - 19 - 18 -- 84
Southwest Eastnorth 10 - 17 - 20 - 18 -- 65

On paper, this was a match between two unranked, inexperienced basketball teams. These were two squads destined for also-ran status this go-round, and one of them would walk out of the Southwest Eastnorth arena with a victory tonight before they took their lumps against the teams who were in the real competition.

But there was a cold shift in the room as soon as the Delaclava starting five walked on the court. They were small, but they were tough, mean, and meant business. They were coming off a four-point loss in Sarzonia which had helped them warm up for this tournament. Now they were confident enough in their abilities to put forth a good showing, and pissed enough that they wanted to exact revenge against anyone and everyone.

Đorđe Zubić got the opening tip to Evan Galliano. Rick Jones was already flying halfway down the court to take the pass. 2-0.

Thurman Hoffman stepped out to inbound the ball. Unable to withstand the pressure, he threw a weak pass that Galliano intercepted and kicked to Evgeny Golubkin, who drained it from the arc. 5-0.

Hoffman stepped out again and quickly got it in to Hogan Elliott, who was immediately trapped by Galliano and Golubkin. He tried to find his fellow guard Tristan Bumfry, but could only get it as far as the tower at the center of the court, Zubić. The hefty center drove towards the basket, waiting for someone to stop him. No one wanted to get in the way of that train, and Zubić barreled all the way through for the two-handed slam. 7-0.

Bumfry walked the ball up the court slowly, trying to compose his team. The Phoenixes defense sat back, waiting for him to cross the line.

"What are you waiting for?" coach Jim Levins yelled. "Press it!"

Galliano stepped up to Bumfry, and within a few seconds had knocked the ball away. This time, Galliano took it to the house himself. 9-0.

"Time!" shouted the SWEN coach Frank Kavinski, exasperated with what had just happened in the blink of an eye. As the SWEN team walked over to their bench to get an earful, the Phoenixes five jogged over to their skipper, exchanging low fives, celebrating while keeping the intensity up.

The SWEN team that came back from the bench was ready to go now, but it was hard to erase the early gap with the way the Delaclav players were smothering their offense. They were getting better at beating the trap, but on the other end Zubić was a one-man wrecking crew, swatting away a few shots and interrupting many more. Levins had set a goal for his team on how many points per quarter they should allow, and he kept reminding them. "Fifteen!" he'd shout as the Phoenixes continued to lock down and disrupt passes. "Fifteen!" he'd shout when one of them would get beat for a layup.

They allowed ten. 22-10 after ten minutes. The second quarter was faster and looser on both ends of the floor, but still in Delaclava's favor. They led 47-27 after a half. Zubić, who had some dodgy conditioning, had managed to play all twenty minutes so far and had a double-double on the board. He'd finish with 19 points, 18 rebounds. The floor general and the star, Rick Jones, was making everyone around him look good even as he helped himself to 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists for the game.

As the second half progressed, Levins rotated different lineups and got every player in the game. He had a feeling this game was won, and though he didn't want to let off the gas, he needed to know everything his team was capable of.

When the Phoenixes closed out an 84-65 win and crossed the court to shake hands, a casual observer might expect them to be happy. Yet the Phoenixes were mostly all business, save for a few smiles; they were anticipating what they were going to hear from their coach in a few minutes.

Sure enough, Levins opened with:

"We lost the second half. I know we tried different lineups, different strategies. But I need every single player to be ready to go and contribute to this team.

"Seventy percent of teams who win the first quarter win the game. And we've done a great job of that. But if we don't have the focus, the killer instinct, the conditioning to close the game out, we're going to fall into that thirty percent more often than we'd like."

There was no disagreement from the players. They all nodded. They all expected this of themselves.

"How many points do we score each quarter?"

"20."

"How many points do we allow each quarter?"

"15."

"We scored 20 points twice. We allowed 15 points once. We go out there and win every. single. quarter. Do you understand me?

"Yes sir!"

Levins paused for a second. Then, now that he'd gotten his message across, he broke into a wide smile and clapped his hands. "1-0 baby! How does it feel?!" The tension lifted as the players cheered and pounded on their lockers.

"I know we're a long way from it, but we're keeping our eyes on the prize, you hear me? Bring it in!"

The players gathered around, hands up. "Rick, will you do the honors?"

Their captain barked, "Ten and oh on three! One, two, three - "

"Ten and oh!" the team roared together, and the excited post-game chatter broke out.

This wasn't a team that was looking to take their lumps. They were the real competition.

Venicio Piazza Memorial Arena, Republica, Free Republics

With 21 seconds left on the clock, Qasden's shooting guard landed a 3 to put them up 83-82. Immediately, Leon Alexeyeva called a timeout to draw up a play.

Leon Alexeyeva - Everybody in the arena is expecting this to go to Patricia so here's what we're gonna do. First off, we need to run down the clock. Don't shoot until you know they're not going to get another chance.

Brandon Owen - What if they foul us?

Leon Alexeyeva - If they foul, you shoot the foul shots and then find a way to stop them. I don't think they're going to foul though. Run the clock down, get the ball to Patricia and then we're gonna get Demeter open on the other side. Patricia, you pass the ball to Demeter when they're expecting you to shoot. Demeter, if all goes well, you get a shot with very little time left. If you do, don't miss.

Demeter Moricz - Understood. But what happens if I don't get open.

Leon Alexeyeva - If you're not open, Patricia will either take the shot herself or pass it to somebody who is open. No matter what happens, get the shot off and make it.

Play resumed and everything went exactly as planned. Qasden's defense keyed on Patricia Thibodeau with a double team. As they expected her to shoot, she passed over the head of a defender to Demeter Moricz. Moricz lept into the air and landed a long 2 with 0.3 of a second to go. Qasden called timeout, in-bounded and launched a desperation 3 that went flying into the courtside seats behind the net as fans rushed the court to cut the baskets. This was a tradition in Republican basketball after all home team wins not just important ones.

Following the win over 10th ranked Qasden, the Republicans had to travel to Northwest Kalactin to face the 26th ranked side. Following the game in Kalactin, they would face 3 unranked sides in a row. As the #2 ranked team coming into this tournament, they were expected to run the table especially after how close they had come a year prior to winning it all. The close game against Qasden has been a wakeup call as they'd had to rally from 8 points down with 5 minutes to go to win on a last second shot. It wasn't supposed to be like this at home in the IBC opener but they'd still managed to survive the upset attempt. On paper, only the road match at Qasden would be harder in this group stage...

Preview of The Match Against Free Republics
All the Kalactanians need here is a win. The team just needs to show their power against the top teams in the world. A win here would definitely show that to everyone. The Kalactanians put on a good show against an unranked team yesterday however, that proves nothing against one of the top teams in the world. The Free Republics are a world basketball power rivaled only by teams such as Vangaziland, Drawkland and Banija. They come into this game ranked number 2 in the world, the Kalactanians on the other hand, sixth. The Free Republics is one of the biggest places in the multiverse so they have a plethora of players to choose from. The Kalactanians however, have a population of 20 million where basketball in not necessarily a large sport.

It seems that Center Michael Hughes will be starting against the Free Republican team and he will look to wreak havoc on defense like he did in the last game. Jorge Sutton will also be starting at power forward looking to improve on the poor performance that he had last game. Ricky Garza who is starting at Shooting Guard will look to put on a textbook defense performance against the skilled Free Republics team. Charlie Larson will also be the final starter for the team at small forward after a mediocre game last night.

The Free Republics put on a weak performance last night against Qasden just barely winning over a team that they were expected to beat. Leon Alexeyeva drew up a last second play for the team to win against the 10th ranked Qasdonian National Team.

In terms of matchups Josh Abbott will be playing against the 5-8 “Queen” Thibodeaux. Hughes will have to go up against a challenge in 7-3 center Brandon Owens who will give him a tough height matchup. Jorge Sutton will look to use his athleticism against Edan Osario who he could beat out with his speed.

Top IBC Dynasties Part 1

1. Saint Kanye IBC 20-24
Saint Kanye had by far the best modern IBC dynasty. They played 4 different teams in the championships of the IBC in 5 years. Somehow after their first championship, while ranked number 3 in the world they failed to qualify for the knockout rounds. They did not participate in the 25th IBC. They still do not participate.

2. Saintland IBC 14-16
In this IBC three-peat the lands of saintland managed to win against Ko-oren twice and then in their first beat Electrum. They managed 2 third place finishes before the Saint Kanye dynasty. They beat Ko-oren by 18 points in their final IBC title.

4. Vangaziland 26-??
Vangaziland had won 2 titles in the 26th and 27th editions following the dynasty by Saint Kanye. They have a fierce rivalry with Drawkland after 2 IBC championship games fought between the 2 teams. Vangaziland also put up strong teams during the Saint Kanye dynasty finishing second at the 22nd International Basketball Championships.

5. Drawkland IBC 25-28
Another team with a lot of recent success, Drawkland is one of the best basketball teams ever by historical numbers. They turned up in 3 of the past 4 championship games and also have been a competitor with Vangziland in the battle for the best team recently. With 2.3 seconds on the clock, Rick Jones was bent over, hands on his knees, head down, and it dawned on him and the rest of the Phoenixes that they had lost.

They were so close. It had been a dogfight all game long. No points were scored for the first two minutes, and Delaclava had only managed to put up 13 points in the first interval, yet found themselves down by just three. Valladares was a tough team - like Delaclava, they were ranked low but had basketball history in their nation. The Valladars had visited the host Equestria and walked out with a tight overtime loss. They wanted to get back on track in front of their fans, and the Phoenixes wanted to keep climbing to the top. Neither side wanted to give an inch.

And yet the Phoenixes had given an inch somewhere in the first quarter, and they couldn't quite seem to get it back. They'd crawl back to within two, then watch the lead go to six. Always there, but never ahead.

Until the very end. It seemed that maybe, just maybe, Delaclava had a little bit more left in the tank. Đorđe Zubić and Henry Brüning had gone to war in the paint all game long. Robert Romano and Randy Price had traded buckets all game, Price putting up 20 points in a complete game effort for his team. Rick Jones was having an off night on the floor, but tried to make up for by rallying his team in spirit.

And in the last few minutes, Delaclava had their shots. Price, Evgeny Golubkin, and Jones were all trying, all missing. Zubić was beating Brüning for the offensive boards and kept giving his team chances. With 23 seconds left, Zubić got the inside position, leapt up and swatted the ball in by the fingertips. 67-64.

Lucas Souza brought up the ball. Phoenixes coach Jim Levins shouted, "No foul! No foul!" Souza took his time up the court, but at the center line was immediately met by Golubkin and Evan Galliano. Souza tried to cleverly get the ball out of bounds off Golubkin's foot. It came straight back onto Souza's own ankle and rolled out.

10 seconds. "Time!" Levins yelled to the ref, who acknowledged it and motioned the teams over to their benches.

"Okay, guys, listen, we don't have two chances here. We have to make it in one go, and now. Jones, you drive. George, pick at the top of the key. Roll off in case they let you have it, who knows, maybe they'll foul you. Gene, Evan, Randy, get on the arc, run switches for each other. Jones, get it away with three seconds left. You ready? Let's get this!"

Galliano inbounded the ball to Jones. Jones walked it up for a few seconds, then changed velocity. Romano tried to go with but ran into Zubić. Jones looked to his left. Golubkin had set a down screen and Randy Price was curling up, wide open to tie the game.

Jones raised his arms to zing the pass to price. He felt a bump on his right elbow. Marcelo Romero had dropped in to help, and though he was a bit slow, he had just gotten in the way of the passing motion. The ball popped up, Jones reached out in desperation to corral the ball, but it bounced off his fingers and over the baseline.

Jones bent down and knew what had happened. Incidental contact, no foul, game over. They had been in this one for 39 minutes and 58 seconds, and were coming away with nothing. He stood up, shook his head, and was already congratulating Romero and Bruning as Ronald Rios rolled the ball in to finish proceedings.

The locker room was silent as the players waited for their coach to come back in. The coach was always the last one in, and the players could tell what mood he was in by how loudly the door slammed behind him.

Levins entered the locker room, and the latch clicked softly. In a hoarse voice, Levins said, "Well, I think we'd like to have that one back, yes?"

There was a murmur of assent. "We match up pretty well with those guys. But if we're talking about our path to doing well in this tournament... we really needed to have that one. I don't know if that was room for error we had."

Nothing else to say to that. Levins continued, "We'll get home to Vana Beach, and we'll get that one back. The good news is, we fought hard tonight, we keep getting ourselves in battles. If we want a crack at Banija or Equestria, we'll need to know how to do that.

"There are a million different ways we could've gotten those three points back. And I think we know what a lot of those are. But we're not going to do this now. It's going to be a rough night. Try to sleep it off, get rested, and we'll have our full attention on this tomorrow. We've got big things ahead of us. First home game against Banija. I know they're a tough team. But we take care of business at home! If they want to come to our home gym and win a basketball game, they've gotta bleed and sweat for it! You hear me?"

The team all nodded and voiced their agreement. "New mission, on to the next one. Ricky, bring it in!"

Rick grimaced a bit, knowing they were longer going for 10-0. But he yelled, "Nine and one on three! One two three!"

"Nine and one!"

The players went about their post-game routine, still quiet with disappointment. Levins walked out of the locker room, thinking about a hard conversation coming up:

Carly needs to start. Carly Davis was the lone female player on this team, and she had busted her tail to earn her spot. Now they were playing real games...and she was shining off the bench, while Evan Galliano had notably been struggling. Galliano had four turnovers just tonight and was a liability for stretches of the game. Levins knew he had orders from the DOC not to stir up controversy with this team, especially with this issue. But Carly Davis was a bona fide starter. She's performing and Evan is not.

The rest of the team had been more than welcoming to Davis, but Levins knew there was still shades of a boys-club attitude when it came to the division of playing time. The results on the floor should speak for themselves, Levins thought. But that's not always enough when a girl does it.

This was going to be tough. If Levins didn't handle this gracefully, it could lead to discontent within the team. Levins could get fired.

Screw it, Levins concluded. They hired me to win basketball games. That's what I'm going to do.

Andromeda Eagles @ Vacolicci Haven & Celeria
Post-Game - Game Day #2
11:32 pm

ANN correspondent Rose Jackson travelled with the Eagles to Vacolicci Haven for their first road game of IBC 29. She stands outside of the stadium.

“The Andromeda Eagles found out very little about their opponents before tipoff. What they did find out was that they were very, very tall. The Coaching staff knew that they would have to compensate for their size disadvantage with a more fast-paced offense.”

Cut to game footage.

“The Coaching staff acknowledged that Sadie Smith had earned her way into the starting lineup. The question was who would join her. They chose Melissa Long at center, Rosie Johnson and Quick Tillis at forward and Kelly Waters at point guard.”

Cut to first quarter highlights.

“Early in the game, the Eagles played at the Vacolicci pace, trailing 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. According to Melissa Long, the Eagles were ‘feeling out’ their opponent, looking for weaknesses to exploit.

Cut to post-game interview with Melissa Long.

“It took us a while to realize that while they were much taller than us, they weren’t exceptionally coordinated. They couldn’t move the ball as effectively as we could.”

Cut to Jackson in front of the stadium.

“It was early in the second quarter when the Eagles were able to capitalize in transition.”

Back to game highlights.

“Sadie Smith was able to steal the ball from the Vacolicci guard. Smith passed to Waters who led the transition game, leaving the Vacolicci flat-footed. Waters passed to Tillis, who tipped it to Long, who tips it back to Waters under the basket for an uncontested layup.”

Cut to Melissa Long scoring a lay-up after a pass from Waters.

“The Vacolicci never really found an answer for the Eagles transition game. Kelly Waters left the game late in the fourth quarter with 11 points and 15 assists, accounting for 43 of the Eagles 78 points tonight.”

Cut to an interview with Kelly Waters.

“I had seen clips of games like this on television when I was a kid,” Waters said. “But to have so many scoring options in a lineup, it made my job easy.”

Cut to highlight of Hattie Williams. Voice over by Jackson.

“Hattie Williams, who plays with Waters at Syracuse, heaped praise on her teammate.”

Cut to interview of Williams.

“Whether we’re running the Palermo (Princeton offense) or the Run-and-Gun, I doubt there is a better point guard in Andromeda than Kelly Waters.

Cut to late game highlights.

“Waters was replaced by Liv Stuckey, the Andromeda leader in free throw percentage. Stuckey scored the last four points for the Eagles, including two from the charity stripe, putting the game out of reach. The Vacolicci did manage a last second three, cutting their deficit to four as time expired.”

Cut back to Jackson.

“After a valiant effort against the #1 Royals and a well-earned road win against the 17th-ranked Vacolicci, the Eagles will host North Quadana in Angeles City. This is Rose Jackson with the Andromeda News Network

DROP IT DOWN!: Riverside Welcome To All

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue May 05, 2020 5:09 am

After the (expected) beating at the hands of Valanora, the real tournament began for the Hoops-Jags: back-to-back matchups against the other 2 unranked teams in Group G. The BFT can accept losing to nations like Valanora, but if we can perform well against nations of similar status in the IBC (i.e. none) that could set us up for a nice ranking for the next tournament and might pressure the BFT to start sending teams to the NSCAA.

So Unity Center in Riverside welcomed fellow-unranked nation Preiva, who are an enigma to many. The BFT couldn't find a single teamsheet on this team, so everyone on the Jaguar roster would be going in blind. It was the same starting 5 as the game versus the Dragons.

It turned out to be a very tight game. Both teams wanted their first win in IBC play, to help in their quests for as many wins as they can. Travarius Okuramangawa and DeMarcus Winston were dynamite, as were others on the bench - but the Preivans were always close behind, shooting in shots of their own. In the end, it took a late-game bucket from Mindaugas Karnišovas to win this game - our first in international play.

This is something we can build from, but now we must try for more. We travel to Nouveau Quebecois for game 3, a team with an identical record. 6th vs 5th and now 4th vs 5th, that how it goes in the IBC...

Not a good start into the IBC XXIX.

First the women's team lost against North New South Wales, after hopes were high to win at home in Ancient Tomb.

To the surprise of everyone not coming from there, the arena was a small crypt in the Underdark, with capacity for only some skeletons as spectators and with gloomy light that reduced the quality of the TV images. The Kriegiersien Sports Federation was shocked about the conditions.
“If we had known beforehand that our national champion plays under this circumstances, we had never given them a home match for the qualification to the IBC.”

The few fans who had followed their teams to the remote location and survived, had told that for month after Ancient Tomb had reached the Kriegiersien Finals for the first time.
“A scary place, really musty, all taverns far away and not very good, too much cannibalism.. their cheerleaders are fun though”, told us survivalist and basketball fans Scorpion Grylls from Schoenwetter.
Image
The organizers thought differently.
“That atmosphere didn’t help us in any way. Or our finances.”

After the 81–67 loss of the men’s team in Petroslovania, who had already beaten them decisively in the World Volleyball Expo (also with the men’s team), now the women will face the group favorite Lisander.

They will play in Pony City.

“They have a better image. Colorful, nice cheerleader, an acceptable court for 3.333 fans and even though they never qualified for a national final, they should be up to international standards and give the team a boost.”
Image

Furthermore with Ivory Fire a home player will make their debut on the international stage after missing the first game because of a bad cough and magical hickup.

On to the Next One...

Sometimes in sports, randomness just isn't on your side. Donnacona had perhaps the toughest draw in all of IBC XXIX, commencing the tournament against the World's 4th and 11th ranked teams. Only two other groups have two teams in the top 11, and neither featured one other side facing off with both of them consecutively to start the tournament. (We're also the only team to face off with three consecutive teams with IBC points coming in, as our next opponents, Valladares, are also ranked). Against Banija, the Hudsonians Donnaconans acquitted themselves nicely, leading for much of the game and losing by only 5 to one of the favourites in the whole competition. Against Equestria...let's just say it's very disorienting to try to immerse yourself into this society of largely sapient non-humans, and leave it there. The Equestria team absolutely dominated our boys, winning by 23, which was actually flattering to our side, as the Ponies started to let up in garbage time, when Jojo Allen came on for Donnacona and scored buckets in bunches, ending up leading our team with 15 points despite playing for only 11 minutes.

Code: Select all
   Group IBC Points
GROUP C   49.417
GROUP A   45.917
GROUP E   43.417
GROUP F   41.833
GROUP B   38.917
GROUP D   31.5
GROUP G   25.5
GROUP H   25.5

Only two groups have more IBC points cumulatively than Group E. How envious are we of "Nouveau Quebecois" and "The United States of Nuclear Weapons"?

The good news is that the Sun will always come up tomorrow. Valladares are also a very tough opponent, but thankfully after them there will be a series of unranked opponents wherein we should be able to come back from the likely 0-3 we're going to start. This game will not be in our beautiful city of Botley but rather in the Agostini capital of Trevona, who hosted the last finals of the IUBC, which did not go well for Valladar clubs. Only Carloburgo Knights made that tournament and they fell in the first round to Crystopolis Lancers, so Henry Brüning and Robert Romano might have some negative connotations, which perhaps can help us out.

Image
The very busy floor that our national team will face off against Valladares on, Donnaconan artisans meticulously crafting each bit of wood.

What do we hope for in this matchup? Well, the Trevona BC backcourt will get to play on their home floor, and should have a favourable matchup against a smaller Valladar side. Keeping away from Henry Brüning will be key, and Alexandre Marchand will have a big task both guarding Brüning and luring him to the perimeter and away from the ball. The Apples will probably also want to give some time off to Kelly Douglas III, whose miracle run may have come to an end after a wildly inefficient 1-11 shooting against Equestria that may have cost him a little bit on his next contract.

So far, so good.

The Abanhfleft Rebolusyonaryos were off to a 2-0 start in the 29th International Basketball Championships, and so far it appeared that both Jan Harris and Jazz Higgs were getting all the plaudits for it.

Harris' game plan was simple: get the ball whenever, wherever and hit the opponent on the fast break. And against Cassadaigua, their first ever opponent in this tournament, it had been shockingly effective. Sure, the Dagans, returning to basketball after a long hiatus, got off to an early lead, but once the Rebs settled into a rhythm and got more familiar with Harris' system, the home side took the lead and never looked back.

But that didn't spare him or the team from some criticism. There were quite a few local pundits who decried the seeming gamesmanship of Jan Harris over the obviously struggling Dagans, wondering why he didn't pull back his main men until the fourth quarter. Upon hearing this, Harris' first reaction to this was "Seriously? I win my very first game as coach of the
Rebs and y'all are complaining about the way I won the game? I remember the days when people were demanding that we beat every team out there by 40 points or whatever. Man, sometimes we Flefts are too hard to please. I give y'all a big W and all you're sayin' is 'why didn't you take it easy on the girls?' Give me a break, man! Enough of this bullshit!"

Needless to say, Coach Harris' comments did not go down very well with the very same people who had delivered the criticism in the first place. But there were also some people who thought that Harris had reacted disproportionately to the criticism being leveled on him. Yes, he had a point that sometimes people complained just because they wanted to complain, but he didn't have to yell about it in a press conference.

Harris was also asked about rumors that the blowout loss had perhaps created a rift between the Dagans, a rift that was beginning to grow thanks to social media. His comments: "It's not my team, man. Not my country. Sorry, but I couldn't care less about something that isn't happening to me or my team at all."

Jazz Higgs had dropped 40 points on the Dagans that night. When asked if this was part of the game plan at all, he replied: "First and foremost, this is a team effort. Everyone on this contributed to getting the victory. It just so happened that I had a bigger share of that particular pie than anyone else. It's not always going to be the case though. I know that. But we're just a team trying to score more points than the other team. And if I'm the guy who has to score the points, I'll do it. And I'll do it gladly."

The people being kept away from The Palestra in Woodstock due to social distancing requirements in effect to prevent the further spread of the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus have missed out on some incredible basketball.

Sarzonia was on the short end of a one-point margin this time as the No. 8 ranked team in the multiverse Valanora escaped a potential buzzer-beating shot attempt as time ran out to give the visitors a 76-75 win.

Reserve centre Terry Rutledge stood on the sideline with the ball in his hands with 1.8 seconds remaining looking for an opening to fire the ball top shooting guard Mike West, but he saw a flash that caused him to double-clutch before he tried the pass. That hesitation cost him and the Stars dearly. It proved to be point guard Amelia Norberg, as she darted in and snagged the attempt before it ever reached West.

Norberg then launched the ball high toward The Palestra's rafters as the final horn sounded and the Vanorians had their narrow one-point victory. Stars coach Thomas Manningham only half-listened to Vanorian manager August Andreasson and only heard, "good game," although several observers reported that Andreasson said something else.

"I was focused on what I was going to tell my team," Manningham said after the game. "I don't imagine it was anything much more than what I heard."

Despite scoring a game-high 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field with a 2-for-3 mark from beyond the arc, West was sombre in the dressing room, starting at the floor as he dutifully answered questions about the one shot that never was.

Rutledge for his part logged 26 minutes, earning the most playing time at centre as the Stars (1-1) opted for a bigger lineup in the second half in an effort to wear down their more heavily regarded opponents.

The move seemed to work as the Stars clawed back from an eight-point deficit in the second half and led by as many as six in the fourth quarter before Valanora (2-0) went on a 12-2 run to take a five-point lead with a minute left.

As the shot clock turned off with 23 seconds remaining, small forward Harold Blevins launched a contested 3-pointer that swished through as the Banijan referee's arm rose through the air. When he made a motion to signal the basket counted with the foul, the Stars suddenly had new life. Blevins converted the foul shot to make the score Valanora 76, Sarzonia 75.

The Stars will play their first away contest of the International Basketball Championships as they get set to visit unranked Preiva, which dropped their match away to TJUN-ia 79-77. Most of the time, observers might think the Stars would have to adjust to facing a hostile crowd for the first time.

However, with the severe restrictions in place for the SARS 2 pandemic, this Stars team will have to adjust to actually playing with a crowd at all.

"It's definitely going to be different," Rutledge said.

Things are better at home,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

For the first time since Saintland won the title in the 14th International Basketball Championships in Concord Heights, the world’s greatest basketball tournament was taking place in Cassadaigua. Following a crushing defeat to Abanhfleft in the opening game, 102-64, there was the potential for this celebration of the return to be dampened. That was not really the case, as many former members or relatives of past Cassadagan basketball rosters were on hand for a special ceremony that took place before the game. It has been a long time, and for these former players, it had to be a good feeling to see the tournament back. It is curious why basketball has taken a back seat for the Matriarchy in comparison to other sports, but on this day that was no longer the case. Queen Cassie II was also on hand, and gave each of the former players or a relative of theirs a unique gift during the ceremony. She didn’t give a speech, but instead offered a small statement of good luck towards the team in the tournament in general, advising them to put the opening day blowout loss in Abanhfleft behind them, and to use that as something that the team builds on moving forward.

Concerning the Abanhfleft loss, there was some scrutiny among Fleftic media pointing to coach Jan Harris as to why he kept the starters in for so long and that he should have called off the dogs, so to speak, a lot earlier then he did. Harris did not offer an apology for the final score and was firm in this response that he did the right thing. Harris has one major supporter for his actions: Cassadagan coach Kelsey Jackson. About some of the media scrutiny that Harris had seen, Jackson responded, “For everyone that thinks they should have taken it easy on us, that’s not what we want. It is not Jan Harris’ job to stop his team from scoring. It is my job to figure out how to stop it. There is absolutely nothing that he needs to apologize for. We are proud team that can handle the ups and downs of any sporting tournament. For us, that game was a significant low point, but we’re not going to complain about the margin of defeat, or that the Fleftics dominated the match. We want the best shot of every opponent we face, that’s how we play the game. We can use the game as a message telling us that we have a lot more work to do before we think we have a chance at significant success in this tournament.”

The Dagans did perform a lot better against HUElavia, and the fans in attendance had to be happy to see that the team was not as bad as they looked in the opener. Maybe that was just a product of having a very tough game to open up the campaign with. Interestingly, for as much has we talk about our own team being young, the HUElavians are even younger with much of the team being college age. Perhaps then, our young team, full of NSCAA Basketball experience and success felt more comfortable against that younger lineup. The Fillies again jumped out to the early lead, doing so 12-6, but this time there was no sudden collapse. As the game wore on and on, there was less thinking about what happened against the Fleftics, and more optimism about what this team might be capable of in the tournament eventually, even if this one will probably be out of reach. The consistency of the offense continued, with Kaitlin Benson looking a lot more comfortable generating the offense. Lauren Rafferty and Ericka Kinney were able to control the inside game. The Fillies led 47-35 at halftime, and gradually pulled away at the same pace in the second half, scoring the 92-66 victory. Benson led the Fillies in scoring with 27 points, but in general this was an overall team effort. After the loss to Abanhfleft, it was a great way to bounce back, and now with a 1-1 record, they can focus on the rest of the group. Going to Terre Septentrionale is next on the agenda, and while they are a very familiar name, they are also an unranked nation coming into the tournament. This will be a big contest to see what kind of team the Fillies are. Are they as bad as they were against Abanhfleft, or are they able to play as they did tonight much more often? This seems like a very pivotal game for the team going forward.

Northwest Kalactin 61-80 Free Republics
They tried but they still couldn’t manage to steal a game from the Free Republics. The Kalactanian National Team showed their weaknesses in their greatest form in almost a 20 point loss against the Free Republics. The only player that managed a good game was the Power Forward, Jorge Sutton who managed to score 19 points for the team, which was almost a third of their points for the entire game. Josh Abbott played well on defense against Thibodeaux but managed to only put up 7 points on the board due to 5 turnovers by him. Usually the team runs the ball through Abbott and Garza but yesterday those 2 could not stop turning the ball over. The game started and it was a disaster from the start for the team, they gave up 11 straight points after a 3 pointer by Larson to make the game 11-3. The Free Republics continued to play great by neutralizing Michael Hughes. The coach of the National Team tried to get Hughes back on offense against Brandon Owens but the height difference was too much for Hughes to handle.

The coach of the team had this to say “Them making sure that Hughes couldn’t play to his full power was great for them. They had a great matchup on Hughes with the 7-3 Brandon Owens starting there. If Owens was 2 inches shorter I have full confidence we would have been able to win this game.”

Michael had this to say about his performance “It was definitely very hard to play against Owens and his height. Owens is a great player and I wish him the best in his future. I’m looking to improve in my next game here against Qasden.”

The Kalactanians who were down by 11 going into the second quarter tried to change up their strategy on offense in order to create more chances. They decided to start taking more long shots from beyond the line. They mainly focused on Abbott and Garza to create and score these 3 pointers as they were the best passers and shooters in the team. Charlie Larson, who is also a skilled shooter used his skill from beyond the line to score more. However, this new approach didn’t work very well as whenever a shot would be missed Owens would easily be able to box out Hughes and get a rebound.

Going into the second half the Kalactanians decided to try and force more turnovers on defense through steals and forcing the players out of bounds. However, this lead to a large number of fouls which gave the Free Republics shooters many chances to get their shots from the charity stripe. At halftime the deficit was widening with the score at 43-29, so Jorge Sutton decided to start using his athleticism in a different way. Instead of just using it on defense he started to go up at the rim against Owens trying to make easy 2 point plays. It worked most of the time with Sutton being able to beat Owens around the rim but Owens was much taller which gave Sutton a struggle on Offense. Overall, it was a horrible game for the Kalactanians who got beat in almost every part of the game by the more skilled team from the Free Republics.

Boxscore stats ranked: points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals
Sutton: 19, 4, 3, 1, 2
Larson: 11, 3, 5, 0, 2
Abbott: 7, 1, 5, 2, 4
Hughes: 6, 3, 1, 2, 1
Garza: 6, 1, 5, 1, 2
Morgan: 6, 2, 2, 0, 1
Carter: 5, 3, 0, 1, 0
Stewart: 2, 0, 1, 0, 1

Preview of Match Against Qasden
The match against Qasden will be a very good test for the Kalactanians. The Qasden National has showed success in recent years however they did have quite a bit of trouble against the Free Republics. The Kalactanians will be starting their regular lineup of Sutton, Larson, Abbott, Hughes and Garza. The Kalactanians plan on focusing on scoring a lot of points this game against a team that had a leaky defense against the Free Republics, allowing 84 points.
