Oleg Baklanov Reveals 1991 Attempted Coup
Tashkent, Turkestani SFSR

Image

Oleg Baklanov, the only survivor of the 1991 Crimean Plane crash that killed Vice President Gennady Yanayev and 6 other members of the Soviet government, reveals that the crash was a botched attempted at a coup d'etat against President Gorbachev.

According to Baklanov's testimony, the plan was for Vice President Yanayev and the other 7 members to arrest President Gorbachev and create a committee to "secure stability in the USSR". He was reportedly swooned by Yanayev's hardline stance about Communism.

Balkanov has not been arrested, as the coup attempt was a failure. Former President Gorbachev and current President Lebedev have expressed their disappointment, but Gorbachev has said that "he suspected a plan" and that "a plane visit was strange at that hour".

Thousands have already been reportedly ordered, with lines stretching for hours.

Global recession strikes after financial collapse in US; USSR officially "struggling"
Washington, D.C., United States of America

Image

A global economic recession has struck, leaving millions homeless and leaving their finances in ruin.

The hardest-hit countries include the United States, where the recession started, the United Kingdom, who went through a housing crisis in 2007, and the USSR, whose newly free market took the largest hit of the three, dropping almost 7% and unemployment skyrocketing. President Lebedev has signed an economic relief act to help get people back into jobs and help restore the GDP, though it'll be a long time before exports and jobs start helping the economy.

Washington, D.C., United States of America

Image

Barack Hussein Obama II has officially been elected President of the United States.

The nation's first black President, many were swayed by Obama's promises of healthcare reform, non-partisanship, and his general charisma, with his supporters and enemies calling him "No-Drama Obama." President Lebedev congratulated President Obama, and many are wondering what the new President will do to help his nation through the recession affecting the world.

In his inaugural address, he quoted the song "Pick Yourself Up" from the musical comedy Swing Time: "...starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America."

Osama bin Laden killed
Moscow, Russian SSR, Soviet Union; Washington, D.C., United States

Image

In a Christmas ceremony, Presidents Obama of the US and Lebedev of the USSR have announced the success in a joint mission to kill the leader of Al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden, on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A joint Spetznaz-Navy SEAL team found Osama bin Laden hiding in Ghazni, a Taliban stronghold after receiving information from an insider in the BBC that he was hiding in the town. Robert James O'Neill, a United States Navy SEAL, claims to have fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden. Lebedev rejoiced in the announcing of the terrorist leader's death, saying that "it has been proven that nobody will be safe if they threaten the innocent people of the free world," and President Obama said that "Justice has been served."

South Korean vessel sinks
Near Baengnyeong Island, Republic of Korea

Image

The South Korean vessel ROKS Cheonan was sunk off the coast of Baengnyeong Island earlier today, killing 46 seamen.

While the cause of the sinking is still unclear, some people in the Soviet, South Korean, and American governments have pointed fingers at the DPRK. North Korea has denied any involvement in the sinking unofficially, but no evidence of their involvement has come to light as of yet. The sinking is still being investigated, and an official report is not to be expected until late April or early May.

Shots were fired over the river Dnieper late into the night yesterday, killing one Soviet border guard and wounding three others. President-Elect Titov has denounced the Moldovan government, while the EU has officially been silent on the matter. Titov's first international scuffle is emerging; how will he handle it?

Protests erupt in Tunisia after self-immolation
Tunis, Tunisia

Image

Protests erupted all throughout Tunisia after the self-immolation of street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi.

Tunisian Arabs are calling for an overthrow of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's government, which has been described as a dictatorship by many parties. Similar protests have begun to erupt in other Arab countries, especially Egypt, Libya, and Iraq. President Ben Ali's government has suppressed freedoms of speech, demonstration, and religion as well as mass unemployment, starvation, and poverty throughout the North African country. The world looks with both worried anxiety and hopeful paranoia.

Saddam Hussein overthrown in Iraq
Baghdad, Iraqi Republic

Image

Saddam Hussein has been overthrown in Iraq following a violent storming of the Radwaniyah Palace by civilian militias, the Iraqi army, and even his own Republican Guard.

Saddam Hussein is to be tried later in April or early in May for treason and war crimes. No government has officially stated support or recognition for the new government, but the United States has apparently been moving a few military units into the Persian Gulf. This has not been seen since the Persian Gulf war of 1993, so another coalition invasion of Iraq could be on the horizon. Times are tense in the new Iraqi Republic, and the revolution in Tunisia which overthrew President Ben Ali certainly seems to have had its effect. Could this lead to the rise of democracy in the Middle East?

The Boston Marathon, an annual race run by native Bostonians, was bombed by two Islamic extremists on April 13, and a suspect is in custody.

Bombing attack in Kazakhstan rocks Astana
Astana, Kazakh SR, Turkestani SFR

Image

A large explosion rocked Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, early in the morning.

The Turkestani government has not let out a list of official suspects, but the far-right nationalist "Kazakh Liberation Army" has claimed responsibility for the deaths of 23 and the injuries of 50+ more. An investigation by federal and Turkestani police is still ongoing, but the main suspect has been a member of the KLA for many years. With this attack, the Soviet government is reportedly thinking about a ban on nationalist parties and organizations throughout the USSR - including the KLA and ARP. Will this lead to instability in the Congress, with the ARP having a say in the body?

Fighting Breaks out in Transnistria
Transnistria

Image

Transnistria and Gagauzia have formally declared independence from Moldova.

The USSR has supported the two breakaway states, and is funneling supplies and troops towards the new republics. Moldova has decried the declarations of independence as invalid. NATO and the Non-Aligned Movement have expressed disappointment in the USSR's involvement in the conflict, with some citing it as a power grab. The USSR has shot back, saying that they are merely defending independent peoples rights to self-determination against the government in Moldova. It is expected war may break out between Moldova and the USSR. In response to this, Moldova has officially stated that it is no longer an observer of the CSA.

United Airlines Malaysia Flight 370 goes Missing
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

United Airlines Malaysia Flight 370, a Boeing 747 from Kuala Lumpur set to go to Beijing with 290 people on board, went missing somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

Any recordings of the flight have been lost, and no debris has been found. Investigators from the USSR, USA, and other countries seem to be stumped. The night was clear, and the weather was calm. The last contact MAS-370 had with the outside world was with Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam. Nobody knows what happens to the plane, though many theories have gone around, to pilot suicide, terrorist attack, and deliberate attacks by foreign governments. United Airlines has yet to comment on the matter.

USSR DECLARES WAR ON MOLDOVA
Moscow, Russian SFSR, USSR

Image

Breaking news comes from eastern Europe, as the USSR has announced a state of war exists between them and the Republic of Moldova.

The other neighbor of Moldova, Romania, has declined any comment. The UN has denounced the war, and sanctions have been recently placed on the USSR by Japan, Germany, and Poland.
