The Isthmian Report

Karesindo's Crusade

The Ĉampionoj, led by Captain Karesindo, have been trying very hard to make good on their promise to make the Moorlands Citizens Republic pay for their involvement of the "upstanding mercenaries" in the attempt of ethnic cleansing in the Southern Moorlands Territory.

A number of MCR militia camps in the Southern Moorlands have been completely decimated by Karesindo's mercenaries, displaying why his company was sought after in the first place with their ruthless efficiency. Several of the mercenary groups sent to stop his rampage instead joined Karesindo's side, swearing allegiance to the Captain and receiving their share of the oil profits while giving the Captain a growing military force with which to exact his wrath on the Moorlands' Ruralistas. Particularly of note, the Gajnintoj have brought their stock of armored vehicles.

Several videos shared via social media (mirrored before their removal for violating terms of service) show Karesindo's Army executing members of MCR militias, and one prominent video showed an assault on a rural manor house in the South Moorlands, where the Army seized Pendito Vero, a wealthy sponsor of the MCR, and hung him from the chandelier in his entry hall.

Interestingly enough, the Mercenary Army has distinguished themselves from what one might have expected by doing very little to harm the regular inhabitants of the region. Passing through towns in the Southern Moorlands, the Mercenary Army has negotiated with municipal militias for supplies, services, and housing, but has not forced itself on towns that declined and has yet to participate in wide-spread looting other than that targeted against Ruralista landholds or MCR militia camps. Apparently, the wealth provided by the oil well revenues has been enough to satiate the thirst for pay within the soldiers for hire.

Karesindo's conduct in the Southern Moorlands has made him somewhat of a controversial figure, heavily criticized for his previous allegiance with the MCR and his company's ruthless reputation, but increasingly popular among local groups who have been relieved of the attempted genocide targeting them. In fact, some have even been convinced to fight for him. The Legio de Karesindo is a new militia group predominantly made up of ethnic South Kanchakans, who have been armed with weapons seized from MCR militia camps, and have placed themselves at the command of Karesindo's Army for the liberation of their region from the Ruralistas' oppression.

Karesindo has promised to "remove every sign that the Moorlands Citizens Republic ever existed" in the Southern Moorlands Territory, and many assume if he is successful he will then turn north to make good on his threats against the leadership of the Citizens Republic. The MCR's Civil Army, a professional armed force organized by the civil government, will be their main opposition if they do so, supplemented by a number of mercenary groups in the North that have remained loyal to their original contracts.

Comrades as we celebrate the workers of Supunkto success it is important to be vigilant. I fear that success we have seen will drive the Parazio government into the arms of the Federation. Preventing the counter revolutionary burgouise from penterating south of the canal must be seen as a top priority to ensuring the success of the revolution and worker prosperity in the Isthmian region.

The government of Manoba strongly encourages that actions be taken to secure the territory currently held by the Parazio Government for the cause of international socialism. In our opinion it is imperativet that the Bonporton Commune secure of not the entire territory currently held by President Armiro, at the very least Eastern Ports on the Magnostrium. In such efforts Manoba would gladly help in the form of Volunteers and if necessary regular soldiers of the PRD.

The success of counter revolutionary liberals as directed by Lykens could spell doom for the revolution in the Isthmian Region if not swiftly acted upon. I hope our conserns and hopes are echoed by you our fellow comrades.

External Communiqué
Secure Wired Message
Issued: Presidium of the National Convention; Bonporton Commune
Directed: Manoba Oversight Committee, TSPR CEC

With Regard to Manoban Communication

Comrades,
The message of the Manoban people is clear and received by their comrades in Bonporton who share their resolve for supporting the continued struggle to liberate the working people of the world from their shackles.

The Bonporton Commune, exercising the public will through the National Convention, has indicated to the revolutionaries of the former state of Supunkto that negotiations for accession of that territory to the Commune are ready to begin, to confirm the success in that territory of the extension of the revolution started in the Bonporton urban area.

At present time, the Presidium does not have intent to make forceful attempts at unification with further territory than Supunkto state. Lack of public support for Socialist ideals in much of the Isthmian region necessitates that a period of political tutelage take place wherein the Bonporton Commune may serve as an exemplar for the success of Socialist praxis to the rest of the Malstrecigano people.

Analysis indicates that attempted use of military force to secure territories below the Nikelo Canal will severely strain the capacity of the Bonporton Commune and possibly serve as a unifying factor to concentrate reactionary forces in resistance to liberation. Further, estimates lead to assumptions that significant international military intervention may provide impetus for counter-intervention from other external sources and/or force Malstrecigano Armed Forces under Admiral Luksa into engagement.

The Bonporton Commune expresses again its great thanks to the kind peoples of Manoba and Tanaya for their immeasurable support of the success of our revolution. It is the belief of the Presidium, the National Convention, and the Commune at large, that the future of Mukal and Olympia will be brighter for the eternal friendship established between the liberated comrades of these states.

With Solidarity,
Presidium Chair Lucjo Amiko;
As agreed to by the Presidium of the National Convention

Mèron Response to Isthmian Crisis
Hugo Lortie, Mèronie 24
April 7, 2020

Image
Foreign Secretary Beaudouin (right) met with counterparts from the Malstrecigano Federation yesterday.

(M24) — Over the past week, the world's eyes have been forcefully redirected from their regular business onto the breakdown and effective dissolution of a national government in one of the most strategic positions on the globe.

Respubliko Tero Malstreciga, a nation on the isthmus straddling Mukal and Kanchaka, which is host to the globally significant Nikelo Canal, is no more. The de facto end of this nation was brought about by the global recession partially started in the isthmian state, as well as the strange and unresolved disappearance of the Head of State, the Prezidanto Antono Brava. After a legal crisis between the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and the Vice President spiraled into attempted forceful seizures of power, the nation was split.

As time went on, the competing claimants to the title of heir to Brava were joined by a series of secessionist movements and other groups that have since divided the former nation into a cacophony of competing factions nearly numbering in the double digits. The downfall of this republic into chaos has effectively demanded response from the international community, with a particular lead taken by the nearby members of the Mukal Union such as the Federal Republic of Lykens and the Tanayan Socialist Peoples Republic.

Mèronie, a distant factor for the ongoing crisis, has now made it's own stance clear.

The Mèron government has recognized the legitimacy of the armed forces of Admiral Campio Luksa as the continuation of the armed forces of Tero Malstreciga, and is cooperating with the Admiral (along with many nations not keen on contesting his control of the vital trade link) on continuing the normalcy of the situation in regards to the use of the Nikelo Canal.

Otherwise the Mèron government has issued a statement recognizing that the response to the crisis in the Isthmus is an invitation to the Mukal Union to lead as an advocate for peace and liberty, and Mèronie has committed to respecting and supporting a solution led by the MU, rather than trying to subvert that institution with its own goals. However, just because Mèronie is committing not to pushing its own broad solutions on the Isthmus does not mean it isn't getting involved in its own ways.

The infamously slippery Mèron Foreign Department has apparently been in contact with both Prezidantos, the Riverine Republic, the Malstrecigano Federation, and even the Bonporton Commune, establishing preliminary contacts among the breakaways from Tero Malstreciga and attempting to diplomatically steer the competing forces away from a violent solution.

One could say that Mèronie is playing favorites however, as they have followed the Lykensburgish lead in offering their best support to the Malstrecigano Federation, a hopeful patch of real democracy in the North of the Isthmus. Mèronie is apparently prepared to recognize the sovereignty of the Federation, and it has also pulled a few strings to see economic aid flow in the direction of the democratic faction. This has taken the form of packages of OIM Development Aid, as well as some incentives towards encouraging Mèron firms to invest in the Federation in line with regular dirigiste directives.

The aid is not to the scale of that offered by Lykens (amounting to just under a billion Livre), but it has added another piece of insurance of the economic future of the North of the troubled Isthmus.

Safwir Newsreel,
title reads : "Nikelo Canal, 'Chaos in Malstreciga'"

Translated audio transcript :
“ The Nikelo Canal, an important waterway, hits the headlines like
a bombshell as Tero Malstreciga collapses and falls into chaos. Numerous
militant and secessionist groups have formed to try and take control of
the region, and this leaves an unsteady future for the canal itself, which
has been a vital passage for Gifftanian ships since it was dug over a century
ago.

Several ministers have stated that, if free and unrestricted travel through
the canal were to be impeded, Gifftan would have no choice but to intervene.

Admiral Campio Luska, a proponent of peace, currently holds dominance
over the canal zone; much to Gifftan’s relief. For if the canal were to be
siezed by a more unwilling force, Gifftan would suffer most – for she is
the canal’s main user.

Anxiously the world waits for the name of the new Malstrecigan ruler,
for whomever it may be must pick up the pieces of this shattered nation. ”

Plamen, TSPR

Kalafatova broke into the cabinet of Zajac, catching him strolling the office in thoughts. But she didn't have any chance to start the report because Zajac met her with this line: "I've heard the news, comrade Kalafatova. It is time to adapt our actions."

COMFOR was baffled. Is there anything that can catch this man off guard?! Probably there was something, but not that.

"I trust you have seen the communique as well, right?"
"Indeed." The voice of Zajac was slow, deep and grunting. "I am not sure how to entice them to act so that they themselves would want to act."
"They will not attack even if someone tries to take action." COMFOR had disappointment in her voice. "Might have guessed those kids don't understand that staying on the defensive is death."

Plenipotentiary took his seat and offered one to Kalafatova.

"And their approach too..." She touchily continued. "Alliance of sex workers! Drug dealer unions! Do they even know that those are instruments of social control used by the most decadent capitalist regimes like the one they have overthrown?! They are no less bourgeois than the Isthmian Republic was!"
"Probably we will be able to influence them," Zajac stated plainly, then sighed. It was anti-socialist but he knew that was to happen. "The time has come for other kinds of actions."

He stood up and went to a window. "I will contact you with new directives. For now, keep Lykensburg in the darkness. You're free."

Before leaving, Commissar asked the Plenipotentiary one last thing. "With your permission and out of curiosity, as a member of the TRP. Have you sent Maximalist forces into Moorlands?"
"No. I re-ordered them to Surdaj and Montebloj, they'll arrive in five days."

COMFOR said nothing. The door closed quietly after her.

Air Base Mikhalevich, somewhere near Konstantsiya, TSPR

Administratively, Strategic Transport Aviation Command was a subordinate unit of ADO (Long-Range Aviation), in contrast to the Tactical Transport Aviation Command, a sub-unit of KTA (Tactical Aviation Command). TRAF made a great effort in establishing transport capabilities of the ADO since about 1990 when Transport Aviation Command was split in two, but sheer size and complexity of the aircraft intended for Strategic Transport Air Divisions (STAD, for short) meant that by the time people of Bonporton have chosen its path there were only 144 aircraft available, all grouped in two STADs ─ 10th and 41st.

Aircraft-wise, each STAD consisted of two transport regiments of 36 aircraft (3x12) and two fighter regiments of 24 aircraft (2x12). Besides, there was a large maintenance cadre for each regiment (approximately 80 per transport and 30 per fighter) and six companies of about 350 men with vehicles for loading and unloading transports. And a small staff unit. In total, about five thousand men.

At the same time when Zajac was meeting with Kalafatova, Polyanskiy was meeting with just two men of his ten-thousand-men command, a short one and a tall one. The short one, Bykov (K-8), was in command of the 10th STAD; the tall one, Ugrinovich (K-9), ─ of the 41st.

"Comrades, I have received new orders. In three days we will switch daily plan to 1200 tons of supplies per day instead of the current 2400 tons per day."
"Why'd Zajac let us stop racing planes like damn horses?" Bykov inquired curiously. "Ain't it related to all those trucks arriving 'ere?"

Polyanksiy glanced at him. "Yes, it is, comrade Bykov. Your division did its part well and can stand down in three days. Comrade Ugrinovich, is the 41st prepared?" And Ugrinovich, a dry and phlegmatic transport officer, put it simply: "Awaiting your orders to take off, comrade Polyanskiy."

"Good. You will be transporting 1200 tons of military supplies and equipment that are currently arriving in those trucks and trains. Daily."
"Ah, I see..." He saw TPA and safety markings on those containers. "Are we going to try to entice Bonportonese for attack?"

Polaynskiy took his seat, followed by his colleagues.
"I don't know the details but I think that's the plan." He chuckled. "To give them enough equipment they'd feel confident and take action against the Southern Contender or Moorlands."

Bykov appeared, to put it mildly, skeptical. "Won't work, 'ey won't attack even if we give 'em all our tanks and arty."
"On the contrary, comrade Bykov," Ugrinovich said, sounding slightly Storsnian. "I think this plan will work. Remember, they have completed their uprising, which is already a feat. And they used Cyclones remarkably well against Moorlands mercenaries. I'm sure they'll find a way to use far less sophisticated equipment just as well. No contender will be of a threat to them if they have more firepower per unit."

"Time will show if you're right, comrade Ugrinovich, but it will depend on your efforts first and foremost." Polyanskiy reminded.
"We will do our best. In three days, right?"
"Starting from April, the 9th. That's all, dismissed."

"A waste of resources," Bykov grunted after they left the office. "And with the war on the horizon!"
"A good way to dispose older equipment and facilitate rearmament." Ugrinovich countered.

"I don't believe those decadent Isthmians have guts to go for that."
"Isthmia is the dark horse of Mu-Kal, Velimir. They may yet surprise us."

Economic Aid To Commune

Despite differences in understanding socialism already being apparent, continuing support of the Commune remains a priority of TSPR policy on the Isthmus. We have ensured its survival in its birth by the means of Bonporton Air Bridge and the Lane of Comradeship; the time has come for more lasting measures ensuring that the newly won bastion will be an example for all Isthmian territories to follow.

Yesterday, the Republican Economic Council has approved the allocation of 10 billion leva as a package of economic aid to Bonporton Commune. From these funds, 6 billion would be employed for purchasing products of the heavy industry while the rest is granted as a donation to the Commune.

Transport Aviation Command confirmed that there are no plans yet to shut down the Bonporton Air Bridge; however, its command staff in their press release acknowledged that the Lane of Comradeship is providing all the necessary food and medical supplies to the Commune. That suggests there may be other uses for the air bridge, but which ones remain to be seen.

MOU on Currency signed

The majority of factions on the Isthmus have confirmed today their signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Currency. The agreement was signed by the National Security Alliance, the Malstrecigano Federation, the Riverine Republic, the Imperio Free State (representing Admiral Luksa's Clique), and representatives of both Prezidanto-claimants.

The MOU clarifies that irrelevant of future activities, the signatory factions will retain the use of the Stelo as their currency, and will attempt to cooperate in terms of currency policies such as inflation. The very loose agreement has returned a small amount of confidence to the former Malstreciganoj Currency, and is notable for bringing the Prezidanto-claimants on the same side on an issue for the first time.

The Bonporton Commune was not invited to negotiate on the MOU due to their replacement of the Stelo with the Unuo. The Moorlands Citizens Republic requested to become a signatory but was soundly rejected.

The agreement was signed in Malmulte in the Nikelo Canal Zone, but the impetus for the agreement appears to have come from the National Security Alliance. The International Facilitator of the NSA Committee, Aminda Miela, was reportedly in contact with a number of groups in the Isthmus without the permission of the Committee, and after the agreement was made it was presented in Reakastello as a fait accompli.

While the MOU is encouraging, few analysts expect it to lead to more solid agreements.

Armiro Invades The Moorlands

The Parazio Government under Prezidanto-Claimant Armiro has been in a much less comfortable position than his rival Koralo geopolitically speaking, but the former Vice President seems to have taken advantage of the situation around his territory.

Armiro has reportedly withdrawn forces from Supunkto, and it is believed he may have made some secret agreements with the Bonporton Commune, making no indication of an attempt to resecure the State. While the Supunkto Governor has attempted to restore order unilaterally, his lack of public support prevented any major risk to the brewing new order in the state. The coalition of revolutionary forces in Supunkto which has taken control of much of the territory has signed the Accession Treaty, making their territory an integral part of the Bonporton Commune.

With forces multiplied on the Southern border by reinforcements withdrawn from Supunkto, Armiro has shocked many by making a major move unilaterally. The forces of Armiro (designated by the Parazio Government as the Army of the Republic) have crossed the border into the Moorlands Citizens Republic, which has withdrawn some of it's northern forces to address the crisis in the Southern Moorlands created by Captain Karesindo's rebellion.

Armiro's forces have moved cautiously. Rather than go for a sweeping landgrab, the Army of the Republic has gone town to town, uprooting militias and arresting civil servants of the Moorlands Citizens Republic.

The full geopolitical impact of this move is yet to be fully understood, but many expect this to be another nail in the coffin for the government of the ruralistas.

Trankvilavoj Islands formally join the Malstrecigano Federation

The Trankvilavoj Islands, the slow moving and unaccounted for factor in the breakup of Tero Malstreciga, voted three days ago in a referendum for accession to the Malstrecigano Federation in some form. Governor Venka, though heavily criticized by former political allies in the core of the isthmus, publicly committed his administration to following the result of this referendum, and it now appears that the bilateral discussions between representatives of the Federation and the Governorate have resulted in success.

The agreement was primarily negotiated between the Federation's foreign secretary, Martela Armando, and the Accession Negotiator appointed by Governor Venka, Koheka Pilako. Titled the Treaty on Integration of the Trankvilavoj Islands, the agreement welcomes the Islands as the first Autonomous Republic of the Malstrecigano Federation, after reported disagreements on the level of self-control afforded by regular statehood.

The Trankvilavoj Islands will be able to create their own constitution defining local structures of government, and will be afforded reasonable autonomy on a number of issues including local infrastructure, education, and healthcare. The Federal government still retains authority for military and civil defense policy, law enforcement and justice, and other matters not assigned to the Islands.

A caretaker government maintaining regular services has been established in the Islands while they prepare to draft a local constitution determining the structure of their legislative and executive bodies. This caretaker government takes the form of the Trankvilavoj Islands Provisional Council, chaired by Governor Venka and including appointed representatives of a number of differing political organizations from the islands.

While the geopolitical relevance of the Trankvilavoj Islands is comparatively small, the first example of the full peaceful integration of a territory into a competing breakaway faction has given some onlookers hope for a general peaceful resolution for most of the country, though Armiro and Koralo have continued to decry Venka's decision as treasonous.

The Isthmian Report
Abelo Derro, 12/04/2020
The Isthmian Economic Community

Perhaps building from the success of the MOU on Currency, several groups north of the Nikelo Canal have agreed in principle to the formation of the Isthmian Economic Community. While warfare continues in earnest in the Moorlands, the Malstrecigano Federation, the Riverine Republic, and the Imperio Free State, have committed themselves to further possible reintegration in a peaceful manner.

The Agreement on the Formation of an Isthmian Economic Community was signed by representatives of the three factions in Malflava. Reportedly, representatives from the National Security Alliance were also present, though they did not sign as a partner to the agreement due to their continued stance that the Alliance is a temporary inter-state structure intended to be eventually dissolved. Nonetheless, the signatories have confirmed they will be inviting representatives of the Alliance to sit as observers.

The Community will reportedly bring a common market for identified "Key Goods", a list including food and construction materials. The agreement establishes the Isthmian Council as the executive body of the community, made up of the Heads of State of signatory parties, who are to meet regularly to discuss matters of common interest, and are empowered to accept new signatories and vote on bylaws for the international organization. No headquarters was established by the agreement, as meetings of the Council are to be rotated between signatory capitals.

Admiral Luksa has clarified in a statement his own take on the agreement: "It is not my authority to recognize the validity or invalidity of organizations of my people, I will not comment on that matter. In the immediate term we recognize the de facto, and as such we will work with this new institution as necessary." It is believed that representatives of Luksa's military forces may also be invited to sit as observers to meetings of the Council.

The agreement, an explicit mutual recognition of sovereignty, has more or less confirmed the signatory factions as committed to a peaceful resolution to the collapse of Tero Malstreciga. The potential success of this movement now more or less rides on how the National Security Alliance and the Prezidanto-Claimants react.

The Isthmian Report
Abelo Derro, 14/04/2020
The Isthmian Community

The Isthmian Economic Community has been a rousing success, with the restoration of free trade between some parts of the Isthmus seeing a partial return to economic normalcy, particularly for the previously disadvantaged border areas. Building from the success of this movement, the governments of the participant states have agreed to the formation of a wider economic cooperation agreement, as well as introducing several other pillars of cooperation.

The Isthmian Council voted to reform the IEC as the Isthmian Community and centralize the administration of these common policies. The Isthmian Community sees the removal of all border tariffs between signatory states (as well as a common external tariff regime), the establishment of an International Justice Commission, and formalizes an Isthmian Central Bank.

While the Parazio and Urbo de Liberico governments have tried to ignore this clear shift in the geopolitical situation, the National Security Alliance seems to have realized that they do not want to be left behind by this movement. When the NSA Committee met and voted on the subject of cooperation with the Community, they voted against it 11-8. In response, the individual Governors of the constituent states of the NSA have started unilaterally cooperating with the Isthmian Community, and have been invited to send observers to its institutions in the immediate term.

Admiral Luksa seems to have been convinced of the potential of this movement, having indicated that if it proves successful it may provide a long-term answer to such questions as the sovereignty of the Nikelo Canal. Even the socialists in the Bonporton Commune, while quiet on the Community's economic policies, have noted that they agree in principle with a peaceful and cooperative final result to the dissolution of Tero Malstreciga.

The Isthmian Report
Abelo Derro, 18/04/2020
The Isthmian Security Council

News has broken that has shocked many observers about the next in a line of multi-factional agreements in the former Tero Malstreciga.

The Isthmian Security Council has been formed with the goal of preventing violence on the Isthmus, as well as organizing the mutual defense of members against violent foreign interference. The treaty binds the signatories in non-aggression, mutual defense, and the maintenance of cooperative inter-military structures.

While military cooperation could more or less be expected to follow the economic cooperation of the Isthmian Community, the big shock has been the participation in this Council. The Malstrecigano Federation led the negotiations along with the NSA Facilitator Aminda Miela, who was unilaterally elected to negotiate for the NSA States without the Committee's approval. The Federation, the Riverine Republic, the states of the NSA, the Imperio Free State, all predictable, have signed on.

Shockingly, both Prezidantos have agreed to participate in the structure (they will be officially designated the "Urbo de Liberico Government" and the "Parazio Government"). Some indications have leaked that Admiral Luksa threatened both Armiro and Koralo if they continued to refuse to cooperate, but there is little solid evidence of this.

More surprising still, however, is the fact that the Bonporton Commune has signed on. The Commune's Presidium reaffirmed their commitment to the international proletariat, but reportedly the Commune has seen success in a conciliatory strategy with the other Malstrecigano factions, ensuring the protection of the Commune from threats that originate within the Isthmus.

This has left the only notable exclusion to be the Moorlands, which are now in abject chaos. As Karesindo overwhelms the south, Armiro's forces have secured a number of strategic towns in the far North, and the Bonporton Commune has started a small offensive in collaboration with the other factions. In the core of the MCR, the civil government has fallen apart as mercenary groups still nominally loyal to the ruralistas have taken to looting and terror to get their pay, many with presumed intent to flee with their earnings before having to fight.

Karesindo Claims a Crown

The Moorlands is in a period of struggle and chaos. In the North, forces of the republicans and socialists have combined to push back MCR militias, while in the core mercenary groups have run wild. In the deep South though, a new movement has emerged and cemented itself, and it is possibly the strangest faction of the entire Malstrecigano Meltdown.

Tero Malstreciga has never had a monarch. Intiqilla natives operated on the basis of collective tribal rule, the colonies under the Red Charter were governed by a local council, and the Respubliko was, well, a republic. This legacy may have been disrupted in a shocking way.

Karesindo Kareli, the captain of the mercenary group called the Ĉampionoj, made a name for himself when he rebelled against the Moorlands Citizens Republic, taking control of many of the South Moorlands Oil Wells, and exposing the MCR's attempts at ethnic cleansing in the territory. Since making that decision, he has built a veritable army of defecting mercenaries supplemented by bands of loyal militias who gathered to the idea of punishing the ruralistas behind the MCR for their crimes.

Some local groups even went so far as to hail Karesindo as a liberator, and a fighter for justice. That initial appraisal seems to have since gone much further.

In Bluavilao - a small farming town in the central area of the Southern Moorlands Territory - a ceremony was held crowning Karesindo I the first King of Ardhyalima. The adopted name is an old local term for the region based on a central Kanchakan dialect. The ceremony, images from which were leaked online, featured the representatives of a number of towns and villages swearing fealty to the mercenary captain, who was wearing a traditional circlet of woven feathers.

There is no word yet as to what territories the "King" considers to be within his realm, and additionally no response has yet come from official sources in the North.

Farsund-Paisua International Airport

Amir was born a Malstrecigano, but raised a Storsnian. Born to a upper class family in the Southern region of Tero Malstrecigo his father was a well-off petroleum engineer and his mother was a former secretary for a Malstrecigano oil company. When he was about 2 his family made the decision to move to Storsnia because his father found a better career there working as the manager for a natural gas extraction company. It took some adjusting, moving to an entirely different country was not easy. A new language, new climate, new everything. The hardest part for them was the weather half a year of cold, snowy days was nothing like the warm paradise Malstercigo was. Unfortunately for them there new home was in a northern part of the country where the sun never set or never rose depending on the time of year.

Amir was not like his father. His father was a hard-core capitalist, the work for what you want sacrifice everything type. A real Malstrecigano capitalist. Amir was the complete opposite. Amir supported the working man and resented his families wealth. Hearing stories of the working conditions at the wells in Malstrecigo and Storsnia and how his father didn't do a thing to improve them made him hate his father. Amir would praise how Manoba and the Tanyan republic in the south treated there people at the dinner table. Naturally this caused many arguments between Amir and his father. He couldn't count how many times his father scolded him for his ideals and tried to change how the boy saw the world. Amir would try desperately to escape. He always had a plan to run away from home and flee to the Manobans in the south a nation where he felt he belonged. The closest he ever got was the bus station.

When he was 16 he filled an emancipation plea to leave his family. Surprisingly it was approved and Amir started to live on his own. With a small gift from his mother he moved to Paisua an industrial area just south of Farsund the largest city in Storsnia. Amir was lucky enough to get a job at a convenience store. With his weekly pay making minimum wage he'd put away a little bit each week in a lock box labeled "Freedom Fund". A year after he left his parents they both tragically died. A horrible blizzard hit the town he grew up in that night. His parents were coming back from some party, Amir didn't care for the details. Their car hit black ice and went off the road straight into a tree. His parents were pronounced dead on the scene. The loss of his father didn't bother Amir much but losing his mother devastated him. She was the only one that truly cared about him and loved him more than anyone else could. Her death threw Amir into a downward spiral until April 2020.

News broke that his nation of birth Tero Malstrecigo was broken. At first Amir didn't care until he heard of the Bonporton Commune. The commune was where someone like him belonged a true anti-capitalist state. Amir had just enough money saved up from his job to get a flight from Farsund to Bonporton. This would be the last flight to the commune as after the 5th his adopted nation was ceasing all contact with several Mastrecigano breakaway states. Amir made sure to not miss the flight he arrived five hours before it boarded. In the mean time he started a journal to document his new life in Bonporton.

Day 0
I'm finally leaving this wintry hellscape. No more snow, no more short days and nights, no more selling boozes and smokes to underage kids. I'm finally getting to return to my true home and be a part of something bigger. A place that really wants to better the world. I haven't spoken regulingvo in so long I hope i haven't lost it. The first thing I'll do in the great commune is volunteer to fight for the workers and all those sufferign from oppression. I will free my poor comrades from their horrible lives.

After a short nap it was time to bored the flight. The plane was a small jet that would need to make some stops along the way. In total the flight was estimated to take close to 6 hours, but to Amir 6 hours was worth the wait to finally be free. Amir found his seat by the window his second time on a plane would hopefully be his last he thought to himself. He closed the window shutter he didn't want to see the hellhole he was leaving any longer.

Tamvere Throws Support Behind Federation

By Aila Lehtonen
5 April 2020

After ending all contact with certain Malstrecigano breakaway states such as the Bonporton Commune and the Moorlands Citizens Republic First Minister Tamvere has annouced that the United Republic of Storsnia will support the Malstrecigano federation. Tamvere praised the federation for being the only true democracy in the region and has committed to aiding the state when possible. This is annoucment comes at a time when Storsnia is recovering from the recession experts are wondering how much the nation can support the federation and if it would be any help at all. The First Minister's address was vague in what type of support might be sent to the federation with some speculating that military support might be included, however, this would be a major policy change for the VDU. Some sources state that the vehicle manufacturer SAV has ramped up production of their vehicles designed for military uses. Perhaps the federation will receive new vehicles to support their independence. Others speculate that military and economic advisors might be sent south to the federation.

"Mr. President!" Chancellor Victor Ramirez was stalking the paneled hallway, lined with the portraits of Presidents past, laying in wait to attempt to catch the current Commander-in-Chief as he was scheduled to attend his first Chamber of Deputies meeting in almost a month.

"Mr. President," he insisted again as the burly, older man briskly came down the hall, flanked by two of his closest advisors, the Secretary and Counselor to the President, Rod Doravan and Dirk Schmidt respectively. President Wilfred Burnuckle, with a sour look, stepped right past the Chancellor and entered the Deputies Hall without a second glance. Chancellor Ramirez was astonished as the man's gall but not surprised as these sort of interactions had become commonplace. It still infuriated Ramirez, as he was the duly elected official, by the Council House, and therefore the people, to be the head of and the representative of that legislature. That the President could think he could just ignore him, especially after a lengthy vacation such as his last one, was ridiculous.

He shrugged it off and followed the posse inside, having to stick his foot out to catch the closing door as the Counselor failed to hold it for him. Once inside he felt his body temperature rise as he entered the fray of old suits and a couple of uniforms that were stuffed inside there. The entire Chamber was the there, all of the Deputies and a handful of their under deputies. They were all engaged in separate conversations as the Deputy to the Mukal Union Abigail Waterhouse tried with futility to present a powerpoint slideshow to the crowd.

When President Burnuckle entered there was a bit of a commotion, a little roar of a welcome to the man who went to the head of the table and took seat before grabbing a donut from a tray on the table. Leaning back in his seat took a large bite of it and placed it down on a napkin. Still chewing he licked some of the white powder off of his fingertips and told Secretary Doravan to fetch him some coffee, the lanky, bald man doing so with haste.

The side conversations continued and Chancellor Ramirez just watched in awe and disgust. He was not apart of this clique of political elite that dominated the majority party, the League Democrats. He was well aware of their blunders throughout the last administration but was still in awe how that were able to win again, with a new candidate no less. Burnuckle succeeded a lameduck from his party, the man who signed Larkonia onto the Mukal Union. Ramirez knew he won the election riding on that wave, and the hype of future infrastructure projects and job aspects. But what Burnuckle also inherited was the start of the massive global recession that had been brewing in his backyard for years.

Now the situation was a serious mess and the epicenter of the economic collapse, Tero Malstrecigano, had also collapsed. A major strategic position and a fellow member of the MU, a response from the other democratic powers of the continent was required. Instead, President Burnuckle had been on a lengthy golfing expedition in Gifftan for the better part of the month so far. In that time, the situation on the isthmus had completely deteriorated and even began to turn itself around. Now Burnuckle was back in town and there was pressure from the legislature, the media, and the citizens to take some sort of stance.

The Council House had been in a stalemate as to what to do with the debacle while the National Assembly had only been holding Standard Sessions and never took anything pertaining to the isthmus to the table. Larkonia seemed like it was taking a backseat when it came to the unfolding future of one of the most important strategic positions on the continent. Instead nations like Lykens and the communist computer dictatorship on the Talia Sound were running circles around the Confederacy. Burnuckle ran on a campaign of being a bastion of freedom in Mukal. MU related infrastructure projects would provide millions of jobs and a major boost in the GDP and people's incomes. Since his inauguration in January, nothing like that had even begun and instead thousands of jobs were lost in the first wave of lay offs due to the global recession.

Tero Malstrecigano being to blame, in many people's eyes, had helped President Burnuckle not get completely blasted on the news for having done nothing down there as of yet. Most people in Larkonia, as far as polls and social media were concerned, were largely apathetic to what was happening. Some, on platforms like SignPost, had even went as far as saying the Malstrecigano deserved what was happening.

But now that other MU powers had made such substantive moves on the successor states in question, it had become clear that President Burnuckle had to get Larkonia involved in some way and quickly.

Chancellor Ramirez had shuffled himself into the background, taking a seat behind the Deputies of Medicine and Education. While he was not a member of the Chamber of Deputies, he was allowed by law to sit in on official sessions. He watched on as the room continued to engage in over all nothing but random chatter. Counselor Schmidt had slithered over to the Deputy of Treasury and the two were discussing something quietly. President Burnuckle, the Deputy of Agriculture, and the Deputy of Business were laughing heartily as they talked about the President's vacation. MU Deputy Abigail Waterhouse was still trying to show her presentation, on the screen a picture of mercenary groups in the Moorlands shooting civilians while statistics of civilian casualties were bullet pointed next to it.

At this point, the Council Justice Anne Yuerism entered the room, along with Deputy of State Richard Thompson. Chancellor Ramirez could not help but shudder. Anne Yuerism was a thorn in his side, a plant in the Council House appointed by the President and narrowly voted to accept. She was the League Democrat voice in the Confederated Democrats party dominated house. She was also the not so secret string puller behind Burnuckle. The old man was not so keen on his position and preferred to let the experts figure out what was best to do. In most situations, Council Justice Yuerism was the chief expert.

She walked straight over to President Burnuckle and he sat up in his chair. The two talked for a while, the Deputy of State handing him a folder. The Deputy of State rattled on for a bit before walking off to take a seat. The President cleared his throat and brought the room to attention. They then went down the line, each Deputy adding a tidbit of relative important information. Many of them were skipped however, and quickly it was MU Deputy Waterhouse's turn. She took a deep breath before doing a speed version of her slideshow. She did not get far before Anne Yuerism cut her off.

"Can you show us the WPI poll on public opinion of the Malstrecigano factions again, Abby, please?"

Abby blinked a few times, "Um, sure," and pulled up the poll, displayed in a pie graph. There seemed to be an almost even split, except for the Bonporton Commune which gained less than 2%. People who were undecided or didn't care polled significantly higher, higher than the other factions. Apathetic (19%), Koralo (17%), and Federation (17%) were polling almost equal, Moorlands (13%) and Riverine (13%) tied behind that, with Armiro (19%) having a two point lead above the highest scoring faction.

President Burnuckle clapped, the crowd's attention snapping to him, "So it is settled then! We support Armiro. I met him at a MU meeting last year before Brava vanished, seemed like a nice enough guy."

"But, Mr. President," Abigail stuttered, "I think we need to fall in line with the lead of Lykens here, follow the MU path to a peaceful.."

"I will make an announcement this evening, I have been working on a course of action, Ms. Yuerism and Mr. Doravan will provide you all with the necessary information and detail packets on it," Burnuckle interrupted her, "A reunified peninsula is our longterm goal but first and foremost is ensuring that the canal runs and the soviets don't gain a thing more. Admiral Luksa did a good job of holding up the first point but this Bonporton mess is not a good sing. We need to act and quick. Counselor Doravan and General Whitmer will explain further."

The two men, who had been whispering to each other for a while since Ms. Yuerism had arrived, stood up and took the floor.

The Isthmian Report
Abelo Derro, 2/05/2020
The Isthmian Commonwealth

Finally, long-term answers.

Representatives of nearly every faction in the isthmus have been present at recent negotiations over the past several weeks which have resulted in the formation of the Isthmian Commonwealth.

This Commonwealth has annexed the budding Isthmian Community and Isthmian Security Council as pillars of the new, much broader body. The Treaty of Grandabieno promises to work towards a free-travel area, establish an Isthmian Parliament to advise the administration of the Commonwealth, and even assume a number of joint foreign affairs responsibilities.

Also established in the treaty is the legal concept of Commonwealth Condominiums, land jointly owned by the commonwealth at large and administrated by a special commission. Admiral Luksa oversaw a ceremony handing over the Nikelo Canal Zone to be the first of these territories, before relinquishing his command. It is expected that much of the early politics within the Commonwealth will revolve around the distribution of profits from the canal which now belongs to many. On paper, the South Moorlands Territory has also been declared a Condominium, though the upstart King Karesindo has refused to entertain the thought and tense discussions continue in that region.

On economics, the agreements afford significant exemptions to Bonporton which had not been a member of the Isthmian Economic Community, on the grounds of its alternative economic mode. The rest of the signatories will participate in a joint administration over the Stelo currency, and work towards increased trade and the restoration of economic bonds across the new borders. Bonporton has also been given leave to continue it's diplomatic relationship with the TSPR wherein Tanaya serves as the Commune's proxy in the Mukal Union.

Campio Luksa was appointed as a neutral figure to be the provisional Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Council, and has called on the international community to recognize the Commonwealth as the legitimate supra-national inheritor to Tero Malstreciga. He has made it clear however, that he does not intend to stay in the office long, and would like very much to be dispatched into the northern Moorlands where the Parazio government has established tenuous military control (with the reported assistance of Larkonia).

With the establishment of a long-term answer which did not see the re-establishment of the Respubliko, the National Security Alliance's committee voted to dissolve itself and allowed its constituent states to determine their own futures (all ultimately decided on referenda). It was initially expected that the NSA's states would be split 2/2 between the Malstrecigano Federation and the Urbo de Liberico Government, but surprising many the majority have voted in all four states for Federation membership.

It is believed that strong early signs of economic recovery and political stability were the main impetus for support for Federation membership. Federal President Stelaro issued a statement welcoming the new constituent parts of the now-largest chunk of the Isthmus. With much of the traditionally wealthy center of the isthmus now acceded, the Federation sits as the predominant economic power in the Commonwealth, and expectations are that most policy will be arising out of Grandabieno in the near future.

Outside of a few corollary questions (nothing is ever perfectly tidy), it appears that the Malstrecigano Meltdown is over.

Plamen, TSPR

Zajac entered the cabinet of Stamboliyskaya without much ado. She was reviewing some papers and didn't give him even a glance.

"Long time no see." She noted, signing a paper. "Take a seat, I guess, what's the point of standing?"

Signing one more paper, she leaned back and exhaled. "I see that the Commune doesn't hold the whole Trans-Canal Isthmus, that south Isthmian oil is not in our grasp and there is no direct way to Bonporton. What was going on this entire month?" She asked, then added, pointing at the papers, "These results are just abysmal."

"The results are better than you think." Plenipotentiary replied immediately and sternly. "They are, in a way, outstanding."
Chairman frowned and leaned forward. "Better than I think, you say? I'm not sure we have the same criteria of success, comrade Zajac."
"Mine are simple." Zajac cut her. "Bonporton Commune exists and can now follow the path of social liberation. Imperialist motifs of yours are not of my concern."

Stamboliyskaya looked at him without much approval. Zajac paid her back with a calm but confident look of those who know they have done the right thing.

"...whatever." She slightly sighed. "So, what has happened? I know there was an air bridge which I have authorized, that it took supplies from somewhere, that Kalafatova went on to negotiate and that Isthmus has imploded." She listed her limited knowledge. "Oh, and that you were appointed Plenipotentiary."

Zajac scratched his mind. That's about halfway to Tanayan active involvement in Isthmian proceedings.

"You probably heard about Bonporton having our MLRS, right?"
"Oh, that too, yes," Chairman remembered it: she read the newspapers. "How's the investigation going?"
"We with Wohlgenannt and Andrijevich have it stalled. Soon the bourgeois public will forget about it."

Stamboliyskaya raised an eyebrow. "So you never intended for it to produce a result. Why even waste resources on OPSEC then?"
"Comrade Kalafatova believed delivering them in open would be going overboard. Quite a sensible assumption."
"Why should we be concerned with going overboard? We should have stated our intentions clear from the start."

Zajac leaned to her.

"On the contrary, Chairman. If we were to... 'state our intentions' as was your plan, the forces of reaction would be faster to consolidate and act more aggressively. It could easily escalate into a civil war ─ not to mention the Union wouldn't react kindly."

"Hmm." She rapped her fingers twice. "Not convincing. First, they have consolidated nonetheless, it was a natural turn of events with Lykensburg pouring money into their so-called 'Federation'." She pronounced the last word with slight disgust, then waited a pause. Zajac was still, so she continued.

"Second, the intervention of the MU?" Chairman looked at him curiously. "Are you even serious? This whole thing is made of thin air that is Lykensburg-Plamen cooperation. And what if it is dispelled? The Union would be stuck in a bureaucratic mess while we seize what we want without much effort."

Carry on. Zajac thought.

"Third, Isthmians would not lift a finger to fight a civil war. I have heard about contenders' militias, but what are they before our tanks and artillery? Would mercenaries in the Moorlands be any better? Evidently no, given how Parazio apparently controls most of the Moorlands. Even their regulars wouldn't stand a chance: each of our corps simply throws more metal per kilometer per minute. The Canal? Even if they would have blown it, repairing the locks is a trivial matter: we have all the blueprints in IATE. Isthmian elites would pay the compensation with their property expropriated and they themselves hanged publicly in Urbo de Liberico. Our army would have a shakedown as well and the result would be worth all expenses."

Stamboliyskaya leaned back and grimaced. "I still don't understand why everything turned out this way." She sounded more muted this time. "Did they even want to act?"

"I think you have fallen into the same trap as both me and comrade Kalafatova."

Chairman shivered; she was startled for some reason. "Trap?" She leaned forward again. "What is that trap?"
"A trap of considering their leadership more than they are." Plenipotentiary continued. "I have been there in person to see where we got it wrong."
"Well, and where did we get it wrong? You have been there, that means you must have an answer to where we have failed!"

Zajac raised his finger and stroked his beard, straightening it. He had to choose words to explain the situation to one that had absolutely zero experience in the science of politics.

"So, you know how TSPR was born, right?" He started. Chairman nodded. "A highly disciplined underground revolutionary organization known as Tanayan Revolutionary Party took power and defeated counter-revolutionary forces in the civil war."
"I think I remember our history more or less well." She noted. "What's the point?"

"The point is that TRP was, as I just said, a highly disciplined underground revolutionary organization that aligned masses and led them to victory. It was formed of professional revolutionaries with decades over decades of underground work. I'm not sure you will understand what were they, but just mark that this type has a distinct psychological portrait from anyone you have encountered."
"Fine, good." She nodded again, her voice slightly impatient. "Now what about the Commune leadership? What are they?"

"Anything but them." Plenipotentiary declared abruptly. "As far as I can tell, most of them are barely in their 30s. They are children of Isthmian masses, rising from masses, leading masses ─ and sharing many of illusions of masses. Revolutionary masses, mind you."

Stamboliyskaya thought she started grasping the idea.

"Ah..." She raised her eyebrow and rapped her fingers again. "So, they are just mass movement leaders and not revolutionary intelligentsia?"
"No, they are revolutionary and they are intelligentsia. And mind you, the best of what the Isthmus presented in its downfall." He continued, seeing Chairman confused again. "Yet they don't have support besides Bonporton and Supunkto. And they don't have an organization to impose their ideological hegemony even if they were to take the entire Isthmus. They would be sitting on our bayonets."

"Not that comfortable of a seat, heh..." As if catching something in her mind, she seized the opportunity aggressively. "But why take all Isthmus? Even the southern part would be enough!"

Zajac was not taken aback. "That's where their qualities turned against them. They could seize the entire South, yet refused to do so."
"But why?" Chairman suddenly lost the last of her composure. "Why, Zajac, why?! I don't understand them! It's a life-time opportunity, it won't happen in decades again! How could they not see it?!"
"Not everyone is as well-schooled as you." He cut her mid-sentence. "Not everyone has guts to take hard decisions either. We should be thankful they got what they got. I have mentioned some of their mistakes talking to them ─ yet the very fact the worker masses have taken over one-eleventh of the epitome of decadent capitalism is an achievement all by itself. We have all the right to triumph."

Chairman sighed heavily. "Whatever... Let's just hope they stay afloat. We have other matters to attend to. You're dismissed." She ended almost whispering.
