Belts hold your trousers up, with more precision than the waist band does. Even the best quality trousers (and let's not dispute what those are) will stretch over time, so they either hang too high when new or hang too low when worn in. Your eschewal of belts suggests to me that you just don't notice if your trousers are hanging too high or too low, and furthermore your conception of them as "cosmetic" betrays that you don't want to look more slender. Most people do, since obesity is strongly correlated with laziness.

I do not eschew belts. I wear them all the time. But that's not the point. A rope can keep your pants up just as well. And it's cheaper too. But you don't wear rope now do you? That is my point.

I never really considered the possibility of putting on a belt in a clockwise fashion, it just seems kind of off...guide with your right hand into the loops, and when you unbuckle it you use your right hand. Maybe it makes more sense if you're left handed to go the other way.
