Cheergirls Roster

You may be familiar with the Cheergirls tradition of wearing a conventional cheerleading uniform during these games, and playing in someone’s backyard. You may also be familiar with how I don’t give them positions, and say they just run around at will.

That is not the case for the Cheergirls lacrosse team. This is a professional side, with proper lacrosse uniforms, and proper positions, playing at a proper stadium. Why, you ask? Many cheerleaders often play lacrosse (OOC: where I live IRL, anyway). So, these girls got game.

(Starters Bolded)

Coach: Caitlyn Hickey (41)

Goalies:
#40- Courtney Barnett (19)
#50- Taylor Simmons (18)
#60- Josie Douglas (18)

Defense:
#32- Kenzie Oliver (20)
#34- Melanie Watkins (18)
#36- Brooke Roselli (19)

#44- Natalie McCabe (18)
#41- Nikki Rollins (17)
#37- Madison Lucas (18)

Midfield:
#38- Chelsea Moore (21)
#23- Abigail Winkler (19)
#28- Rachel Gray (21)

#27- Hailey Alcorn (20)
#55- Meghan McKinstry (18)
#77- Lucy Sinclair (19)

Attack:
#24- Tara Snyderman (20)
#39- Emma Gillespie (18)
#72- Alexis Gallant (17)

#53- Stacey Cuyler (18)
#56- Kendra Montgomery (18)
#66- Jillian Minardi (19)

Note: The team does not play physically, at all, because they are young and relatively small in stature due to their ages.

After the failures of the 28th and 29th World Lacrosse Championships, and especially the 29th edition where Banija got eliminated in the group stages of the WLCs for the first time ever, everything was torn down. The Olympic Committee of Banija seized control, and voted the sport's independent governing body(a rarity in Banija) out of existence. Various reforms were introduced. Chief among them- rid themselves of those who failed. The entire coaching staff was purged, and with it, not a single player who was on the WLC 28 or 29 roster was invited back to form the WLC 30 roster. Those high up in Banija called the WLC 29 group stage elimination, on home soil, of a nation that considered themselves an international lacrosse powerhouse an 'absolute embarassment to the country' and vowed for deep reforms to ensure that this did not ever happen again.

This, of course, happened before the 30th WLCs, in Cassadaigua. The Banijans were able to escape the group stage, once again, but fell to an ancient power in this sport- Sarzonia, by a score of 10-9, in the Round of 16. It was followed by a disappointing entry at the Champions Challengers Cup, where they fell to both Baker Park and Sarzonia in West Guiana, to finish 0-2. In the 31st WLCs, the Banijans finally overcame recent struggles by geting back to where they felt they belonged, the semifinals, though they fell at that stage in Baker Park. While they regressed at WLC 32, only going .500 in the group stage and getting knocked out in the Round of 16 by the tournament's top seed, they've restructured the squad. While they kept the defense and goalies, they made big changes up top, replacing all 7 midfielders on the roster, as well as changing out a number of attacking players. They hope these changes can fix the offensive issues they had last time around, and make them a legitimate contender once again.

Stadium Info

Kizza I Field
Capacity of 33,000. Located in Herzegovina City, Moravica
A specialty lacrosse stadium, it was built at the cost of $115 million NSDs, and funded by the local government. The Herzegovina City Kings, Banija's most popular lacrosse team, play their home games at this stadium. It is Banija's largest lacrosse-specific stadium, and the only lacrosse specific stadium used on a professional level. It is named after Kizza I, the first chief of the Kasanke, and who's direct descendants would eventually become the Kings of Banija. It has been a fixture of international lacrosse as it has played host to a number of important games, hosting the final IDLO Ultimate Cup Final, the final IDLO Challenger's Cup match, one IDLO Champions Cup FInal, and back to back WLC Finals, hosting the final match of both WLC 28 and WLC 29. Very biased Olympic Committee of Banija officials call it the 'most important stadium in lacrosse today', though this claim is of course highly disputed.

Carter Whitlock dreaded the long walk from the receptionist desk into the office of Louanne Phillips. The newly appointed executive director of the Sarzonian Lacrosse Federation was the one who was going to determine whether the Sarzonian national lacrosse team would continue with their greatest player serving as their manager or if the team was going to go in a different direction.

The Stars hadn't exactly lived up to their glory days of the past, only winning a lacrosse equivalent of the Cup of Harmony in Whitlock's tenure. The Stars under two different managers won five championships, all of them with Whitlock playing a key role as an all-around middie scoring goals, scooping up ground balls, and playing the kind of ferocious defence that meant Whitlock could have been at home at all nine field positions on the Stars.

Hell, he probably would have been a great goalie too if given the chance.

Anyway, he walked in and saw Phillips break into a wide smile. Great, he thought. Smile at me whilst you twist the knife. He didn't know Phillips, so he had no way of knowing she had a terrible poker face.

He walked into the building clutching papers outlining his argument for keeping his job and why he felt he should be the coach to shepherd the Stars back to the medal stand for the first time in 17 World Lacrosse Championships. Granted, the Stars didn't compete in most of them, returning the Stars to the realm of unranked countries in the competition. That certainly didn't bother them. After all, the first of their five titles came when the Stars competed in their first ever edition of the World Lacrosse Championships. They were unranked, but they ran roughshod over the competition once they got to the knockout rounds, turning the Secristani capital of Amherst into a home away from home en route to a 10-1 record.

They also came back from a long absence the last time they lifted a championship trophy, facing a Costa Luna side that began their lacrosse-playing careers in a similar fashion to Sarzonia's own gangbusters beginning, and demolishing the would be juggernauts en route to their fifth championship. That fifth title was against a Delaclava side that was extremely close to the Sarzonians. In fact, many of the navy-clad Stars supporters would have celebrated with delirious Delaclav fans if Sarzonia's southern neighbours had captured the title in their stead. The victory for the Stars resulted in a lot of rainbow colours-wearing Delaclavs celebrating long into the night with their northern neighbours in a Cyanea affair.

Phillips poured herself a cup of coffee, pointing out it was a Pacitalian brew, saying, "Squornshelan coffee has gotten too expensive since the embargoes," then she offered a cup to Whitlock, who politely declined. Probably too jittery right now she thought. She realised her friendly demeanour wasn't convincing enough and decided to spell things out formally.

"Carter," she said, "you're going to be our manager," she said. "If we're going to win another World Lacrosse Championship, you're going to be the one calling the shots." She looked and saw the glint of relief in Whitlock's eyes as he now didn't have to worry about making his case to keep his job.

"Have you had your training camp yet?"

"Yes," he said. "Here's our roster."

[OOC note: I was typing out an all new roster, but then accidentally closed the tab my RP was on, so I'm just going to use the same roster as the last few tournaments. I might change my mind later, but this is just to get A roster up at this point!]

Style: 0 (balanced between attack-minded and defensive)
Home grounds: Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock, capacity 35,000.
Please note: This team is renowned for its fair play. If you attack first, it will retaliate, but it will not initiate a fight.

OOC: I RP using real time in most of my RPs, so in Sarzonia, it’s only been about five months since the last World Lacrosse Championships.

Coach: Carter Whitlock (38 years old)
Sarzonia’s greatest lacrosse player and the first Sarzonian nominated for the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Whitlock assumes the coaching reins from Mike Sandusky. An illustrious playing career that led to five World Lacrosse Championship titles and eight medals overall has Sarzonian lacrosse fans optimistic that Whitlock can recapture the magic from the sidelines he so often helped to create on the field.
Defensive Coordinator: Bill Harbour (37 years old)
A teammate of Whitlock’s, Harbour’s defence was critical for the Stars in their last WLC final, when they defeated Delaclava 14-8 in Licentiapacisterra nearly five years ago. He signed on as an assistant coach after his playing career came to an end.
Offensive Coordinator: Tyler Pawlenty (51 years old)
Pawlenty helped mold offenses in college, in particular Rypien State College during a four-year period when that school won three collegiate national titles. His teams emphasise possession and patience, often including multiple passes before taking the perfect shot.
Assistant Coach: George Tomlin (35 years old)
Tomlin recently retired as a faceoff specialist after a collegiate career that saw him win 78 percent of his faceoffs. During his professional career in Sarzonia, he won 69 percent of his faceoffs. He can coach multiple styles of faceoffs, taking into account multiple fogos.
Assistant Coach: Bradley Morse (55 years old)
Serves as goalie coach. He helped several Sarzonian World Lacrosse Championship winning teams with goalies in an informal capacity. Now, he's coming out of retirement to provide assistance as a paid full-time coach after Whitlock convinced him to do so.

G: Marla Wynne - 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, 34 years old

One day before the World Lacrosse Championships were set to begin, Carter Whitlock already fielded the questions from reporters.

"Fucking embarrassing, that's what it was," Whitlock's terse response to the questions was. For each one.

Sarzonia competed in the inaugural Moravica Lacrosse Invitational in what could be considered a de facto Atlantian Oceania lacrosse championships as a preview of the World Lacrosse Championships and stunk up the joint.

Only a last day 11-9 victory over a winless Qasden side prevented the Stars from going 0-3 against the group, which included Banija and Baker Park. Sarzonia's offence was the main culprit, only scoring 19 goals in three matches while conceding 29. Qasden coughed up a tournament high 44 goals in the three matches. Banija won the tournament by capturing all three games.

"It's a wake up call for sure," Whitlock said when he finally had a moment to compose himself and get a drink of water. "We identified some areas where we need to do a better job, mainly winning faceoffs and getting ground balls and getting into the flow of the offence." The Stars lost 58 percent of their faceoffs in the three matches, and Whitlock admitted the team would have fared better offensively if they'd had more chances in the offensive half of the pitch.

"We only scored four goals against Baker Park and Banija (in 11-4 and 9-4 losses, respectively)," Whitlock said. "Not all of that is on the offence. When you're losing the possession battles, you're bound to get in trouble." The victory over Qasden was a better indicator as to how well the Stars can play when they have possession, as they went 19-of-34 from the faceoff X in that match.

"We were better able to get into our offence," he said. "It took a lot of pressure off our defensive players and long stick middies to not have to chase the ball so much."

Sarzonia's first match in the World Lacrosse Championships tomorrow will be a quick rematch for the world's 12th ranked Stars as they face No. 6 Banija away.

"We're definitely going into that match with a chip on our shoulders," Whitlock said. "We have a lot to prove to ourselves and to Banija."

Following the success of the Commonwealth's hosting of WLC XXI, there has been a change in the overall governance of the sport; the Universities Athletics Coalition generously stepped away from its role as the official sponsor in favor of the Baker Park Lacrosse Association (BPLA), established in the aftermath of the last WLC. The BPLA has been welcomed into the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth (OCC), as well as the World Lacrosse Council. The move to separate governance has allowed the national team to pursue a more professional course for the players. In addition, there are plans to begin development of the sport domestically for males, beginning at the 10-11 year old level. However, this squad will include the first men to play for the National Team, with six college players chosen from the growing club sport scene for men's lacrosse.

Veteran coach Rob Petrucelli takes charge for this edition of the World Championship, assisted once again by Jacie Wilson, and former national team player Shannon Fries along with a new addition to the staff, University of St Leon coach Mark Ellis.

However, if others get cheap will us, they will respond accordingly. They are not afraid to throw punches (or receive them) from male players (especially Mosley and Newton), but will only do so in response to an opponents actions, they do not instigate it. Instigating something with Mosley is not advised unless you're player is exceptionally good at fighting.

Lacrosse Tournament To Begin,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The World Lacrosse Championships will be underway soon, and unless you are living under a rock, you know where the playoffs will be held. This seems like a bit of surprise for us to be hosting this again so soon, especially after having just done so in the 30th edition, but here we are, again. Why?

Cassadaigua placing a bid to host this again on the heels of the World Cup was unexpected, but there is a simple answer for why. Brittany Rosa, a spokesperson for the bidding committee told us that, “No one else wanted to bid for it.” Wait? No one else wanted to bid for it? I had to ask her that because it seemed pretty weird that no one would want to host this competition. “Our bid came about due to the desire to get this competition going. Signups for the tournament were created, and the nations that were most interested in playing were pretty quick to do so, but then we just went on such a lull with this. There was one nation that had stated that they were going to bid for it, so I think everyone just sat back and waited for that bid to come about. Then, we just waited and waited. A bid never came about, so there was some discussion about who is really going to bid for this thing. We then decided, why not us again?” Rosa paused, and then continued, “We talked to a few people, and saw that there were really going to be no bids, and we wanted to get this going, so instead of letting it just sit there, we placed our bid, and it was approved.”

So, there you have it. That is why on such short notice within Cassadaigua, we are hosting the 33rd World Lacrosse Championships. Thankfully, the committee did not make the same mistake they did the last time they hosted, which was to have four groups of seven and a double round robin, leading to way too many matchdays. With just 20 signups, that was not going to happen anyway, but a more simple five groups of four set up announced. The Fillies will open against Wrexwic, in a group that also features HUElavia and Terre Septentrionale.

Strong Banijan showing at the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational delivers expectations for team ahead of the 33rd World Lacrosse Championships

Image
Banijan lacrosse player celebrates during the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational

HERZEGOVINA CITY, MORAVICA- To say that the 32nd World Lacrosse Championships were a disappointment would absolutely and positively be an understatement. The Banijans, coming off of a strong appearance in the 31st WLCs, are trying to get back to the championship game for the first time since their first tournament. But they never looked right at the tournament- they struggled all the way throughout, finishing .500 and getting the final berth in the Round of 16. They were summarily knocked out by the tournament's #1 seed, as even though they put up a valiant fight to take the game to overtime, they did not have the skill or the ability to outlast Vangaziland in the knockout stages, and they were sent home early. Actually a decent performance against the tournament's strongest side to that point, but considering their poor play in the group stages, a Round of 16 elimination was absolutely deserved. And now, Ogunsola's side will be fighting once again, to eventually bring that trophy home.

The Banijans managed to find themselves, just barely, in Pot 1. It was actually quite lucky that we found ourselves in Pot 1. Of course, you'd think- five groups of four. Banija is ranked 6th. How did we get into Pot 1 if only five teams were in Pot 1? Well, three straight strands of luck in a row landed the Banijans in Pot 1 for this tournament. First, of course, you'd think Pot 1 would be the top 4 teams plus the host. But Cassadaigua, the host nation, decided not to put themselves into Pot 1, as is traditional for international sporting tournaments. It's probably because the group stage is being played home and away that they are not in Pot 1? But whatever the reason, there are certainly no complaints from the Olympic Committee. Second, 5th ranked Cosumar, who would have been the beneficiary, decided to not send their team to this tournament. That meant that the next ranked highest team would get there- Baker Park or Banija. Both ranked sixth. Banija won the coin toss, and therefore, we are in Pot 1.

That could make a serious difference going into the tournament. But when Ogunsola was approached about it, he, predictably, said it did not matter much. "Some people may say we've had luck to get to this point- but it's not luck that we were in 6th. Of course, sometimes you have fortune- all winning sports teams are the benefit of fortune at one point or another. But we'll have to go out and play our opponents, who are all hopeful. It's a small tournament this year, but that'll make it that much more tough- the margin for error has shrunk. We would have had to go out and beat good teams, both inside and outside of Banija, regardless of if we were Pot 1 or Pot 2." Coach speak, naturally. But it does mean avoiding Abanhfleft in the group stages, which is nice. But the draw was not easy. The most dangerous teams in Pot 2 were Baker Park and Sarzonia, and Banija drew the Sarzonians, who in their return to international sports have quickly become familiar with the Banijans.

On the pitch, the Kadongo Kamu had four matches with them- beating their U21 national team twice in AOCAF LIX, and beating their senior side in World Cup Qualifying twice. And now, of course, they are set to face off here in the World Lacrosse Championships. Ogunsola had great things to say about their Matchday 1 opponent. "Sarzonia aren't five-time champions for no reason." He said. "They are lions of this sport. That kind of success is what we strive for. We've gotten some success- we're consistently in the knockout stages, we consistently threaten, but we've never climbed that mountain. Sarzonia has climbed it repeatedly. These Sarzonia games are big games for our players and our fans, as Sarzonia has long been the standard for international lacrosse both not only in Atlantian Oceania, but throughout the multiverse."

Banija's team is quite a new look squad. After the 32nd WLCs, Ogunsola was brought back for a fourth tournament, although he's certainly seen to be on the hot seat. He decided to re-organize his midfield entirely- replacing all 7 midfield players from the last roster, as well as rejuggling the attack. The first chance to see the new look squad would come before the WLCs. The Olympic Committee organized the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational, as a warm-up tournament for Atlantian Oceania's best sides. An unofficial AO lacrosse championships, of sorts. It featured strong competition, with 12th ranked Sarzonia, 6th ranked Baker Park, 6th ranked Banija, and 8th ranked Qasden playing in Herzegovina City. The Banijans went 3-0, and took home the trophy, and many fans on twii.tur declared them the 'unofficial champions of AO.'

Say what you will, but the team's performance in Herzegovina City brings confidence for their squad next time around. They went to overtime against Qasden, and eked out a one goal win in the extra period, winning 14-13. They beat Baker Park, 10-8 in the final game. And in the middle game, they beat Sarzonia by a score of 9-4. And guess who their opponent is on Matchday 1 of the WLCs, in Herzegovina City? None other than Sarzonia. Ogunsola commented on that. "The significance of our Invitational game against Sarzonia can be thrown out the window. It's not about what happened in the past- it's about what you will do in the future. They will be more motivated to spoil the start of the WLCs for Banija's lacrosse community, and we know the importance of a strong start."

The schedule is in Banija's favor. The opportunity for a strong start is there, with their first two games at home. Their last game is also at home. But they will play three consecutive away games, on Matchdays 3-5. But home cooking at the beginning of this tournament is key. You don't want to be starting in a hole with a bunch of away games in the pipe. But a strong 2-0 start? One is not out of reach, although it will have to be earned. The Stars are formidable- their midfield struggled mightily in the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational. Even their manager is saying that they will go in with a chip on their shoulders. Can Banija get off to a fast start, or will the five-time champions reassert themselves and start the chase for 6?

We'll see soon enough, as the curtain is drawn on this tournament.

HUElavia enters WLC 33 in a Difficult Group

HUElavia returns to the World Lacrosse Championship fielding a young squad in hopes that they can gain experience for future tournaments. In this 20 team tournament, HUElavia (48) has been put in Group 1 with hosts Cassadaigua (9), Wrexwic (4), and Terre Septentrionale (24). HUElavia is not expected to advance out of the group stage, even less so to get a favorable result in the group stage.

Regardless, a small group of fans will be attending the matches, especially since the support back home is roughly in the hundreds of thousands of HUElavians, considering it isn't a well-known and popular sport, compared to HUElavia's two best sports, Football and Futsal. The main players to look out for include Hernandes, Vincent, and Gomez. In the bench, look forward to the potential of Mata, Buonanotte, and Nunes.

St. Saratoga 20-12 Bolgano
Disappointing defeat in our first game.

In our third edition in the World Lacrosse Championship, it was the second time that the Saints shared a group with Bolgano, it was not long ago, in WLC 31 we had to play twice before them, winning one and being defeated in the next game, we were The only team to beat the Saints on their way to the championship, leaving the past behind, St. Saratoga meets Bolgano in an important duel to start the WLC33 hard.

The game was very close in the first minutes of the first half, the Saints quickly opened the scoring giving rise to a very good goal party, although Bolgano also managed to play a good game, he received 20 goals demonstrating the weak defense we have, although the attack was different with 12 goals and 8 different scorers, 6 only managed to score a goal while Lewis Madisson and Ryan McCaullin managed to do it for 2 being the scorers in duplicate, although the defeat showed us how our team is only a disappointment, with future, We only lost to one of the best in the multiverse where not everyone can beat them, but still there are things to fix before playing against Qasden, we were the team with the most goals against in MatchDay 1 with the afore mentioned 20 goals, although once we were the second with the most goals in defeat with Cardo each with 12 and behind Cheegirls with 13.

Qasden managed to win 12-4 against Joyea, the lowest-ranked team in this group, with the same victory differential as St. Saratoga, the Cats were always a strong team in the Lacrosse of the entire multiverse, but the game was played in Bolgano Lacrosse Club Camp, located in Bolgano City, waiting for the stadium to be filled with 10,500 people, both local and international, our team is currently on a trip before starting training before this game, the first time both teams meet, WE SUPPORT TO BOLGANO !!!

WLC 33 -- 3rd Rank Saints return to the World Lacrosse Classic strong after a year off.

The St. Saratoga Saints return to the World Lacrosse Classic after taking a year off due to travel logistics issues to open against familiar foe Bolgano. The Saints fell in their WLC 31 opener to Bolgano before going on to win the championship. So with the group drawing placing these two teams into the same group for the second consecutive classic (for the Saints) they were excited to continue budding rivalry.

The Saints came into match day one set to flip the storyline that tripped them up in the beginning of WLC 31. On a very sunny day and in a stadium full of fans, the Saints would top 17th ranked Bolgano in a loopsided 20-12 victory lead the way by four goal scorer Dominic Fitzgerald. Goaltending was Alex Atkins who continues to show the potential the Saints are looking for him to embrace in the near future.

Impressed by the performance of Bolgano, Saints Head Coach William Toivonen stated "Bolagno continued to show they are coming to play through, look at their goal scorers on the stat sheet. They bring a strong offense and youth in their defense. They'll definitely be a title contender here soon."

The Saints would continue to hold the top spot in a strong Group 5 after taking the first match day against 17th ranked Bolgano. Sharing the Group with the Saints are unranked Joyea who are making their WLC debut who fell in a defensive battle to the 8th Ranked Qasden with a final score of 4 to 12. Below is the current standings for Group 5.

Group 5
St. Saratoga 20–12 Bolgano
Joyea 4–12 Qasden

Group 5 Pld W L GF GA GD Pts
1 St. Saratoga 1 1 0 20 12 +8 3
2 Qasden 1 1 0 12 4 +8 3
3 Bolgano 1 0 1 12 20 −8 0
4 Joyea 1 0 1 4 12 −8 0

The Saints will now move on to unranked Joyea. The Saints have historically struggled against unranked teams with an embarrassing 2-1-3 (.333) record against them. This unranked matchup is essential for the Saints to create space in a competitive Group 5 as No. 8 Qasden will take on 17th ranked Bolgano on match day two.

The result was a lot closer than just a couple of days ago, but it was still the same.

Sarzonia lost to sixth ranked Banija 13-9 to open play in the 33rd edition of the World Lacrosse Championships, causing questions about the suitability of Carter Whitlock as a manager to crop back up after Sarzonia's lacrosse governing body sought to dispel them.

"Whitlock is on over his head. He's always been," said Tracy Cantor, a lacrosse analyst for The Wilmington Wicket, a sporting news magazine. "He was thrown into the fire as a manager and he's definitely no Harold Price. Or even Mike Sandusky."

Other media outlets echoed the same sentiments, but faceoff specialist Jon Austin, who won 19 of 26 draws during the match, defended Whitlock.

"Coach Whitlock knows what he's doing out there. He gets the best out of us that we've got," he said. "He's continually learning as he goes along, but anyone worth his, uh, their, salt does that."

Whitlock declined to comment on the speculation, saying "I have bigger fish to fry, like making sure this team qualifies for the knockout rounds and plays through to the finals," but a source familiar with the thinking of Sarzonian Lacrosse Federation executive director Louanne Phillips said the team shouldn't be burdened with the accomplishments of teams past.

"Lacrosse has grown exponentially since we last won a World Lacrosse Championships," the source said. "She recognises that. She realises it's not going to be as easy to waltz into the world of lacrosse and win titles like we own the sport. We're going to have to earn it by beating the likes of Wrexwic and Banija and Baker Park."

When a reporter asked about the team's struggles with lacrosse when compared to the success of the national football side, the source replied that football was "a special case."

"This team was burdened with expectations because lacrosse is generally more friendly to new sides than football is. Football is hard to break through the very top, so they expected to struggle going in."

Sarzonia (0-1) hope to rebound quickly tonight at Franz Braddock Stadium in Woodstock, where they host Geektopia in their lone home match of the first half of the group stage. The Stars will play their other two home matches in the second half, opening with Banija. The Stars are the 12th ranked team in lacrosse, but Whitlock warned there were no guarantees.

"We could easily be sent packing by the other teams in this group," he said. "We can't just rest on our laurels."

The night before the first ever international match for a team wearing the Solderan colours was a sleepless one for Coach Mark Davis.

He wasn't told explicitly that his job would be on the line. In fact, it wasn't. He wouldn't allow himself the complacency of feeling his job was secure in any way. He had no way of knowing that Minister of Sport Lord Thomas Treadway had every confidence in his ability to guide a debutant team in the first international sporting competition ever greeting a Solderan subject.

So he had trouble getting any sleep the night before. Even an extra strong cup of coffee the next morning at the team breakfast didn't do the trick it normally did. He felt groggy on the bus ride to the stadium as the Snakes got set to face off against the Union of Quincy. He struggled through the team warmups to keep himself from being completely out of it.

All of that changed as soon as the referee's whistle signaled the start of play and the opening faceoff. From that moment until the final handshakes with Union of Quincy players, coaching staff and support personnel, Davis was on point. He was barking out instructions, coordinating substitutions, and keeping his team mentally ready for what lie ahead. It all resulted in a 12-10 victory that saw Soldera take the early 3-1 lead into the first quarter break, but give up four unanswered goals to walk into the dressing room down 5-3.

The third quarter saw the teams trade two goals apiece for the first 10 minutes before Soldera's Nathan Sawchuck scored on an extra man opportunity with 1:24 remaining in the frame, then an even strength marker after a faceoff win and pass from faceoff specialist Justin Conner with 18 seconds remaining to draw the match level at 7 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Holden Crawford stepped into the faceoff X to take a draw at Davis's behest, giving the Unionists a look they likely weren't prepared for. He won the draw, scooped up the ground ball, and took off into the Union end, firing a shot that just missed the crossbar. Fortunately for the Snakes, Evan Snitker was right there to allow them to retain possession. They would retake the lead early in the fourth as he found Dean Rowland for a goal.

Then Crawford went back to the X and won another draw. This time, he won it cleanly and took off, firing a shot that skipped past the goaltender and into the net, giving Soldera a quick 9-7 lead. From there, the teams essentially traded goals until the final whistle signaled the end of play.

The team celebrated briefly in the dressing room, then returned to the hotel. The players were exhausted physically from the hard fought match. Davis was exhausted from his lack of sleep. At least that night, he would sleep extremely well. Soldera won its international debut and that gave the subjects and King Anthony I something to feel good about

Emmerson Field is named after a Vannish general who served from 1949 to 1963. Brig. Gen. Harvey J. Emmerson was a graduate of Overglade University. The school is seen as one of Vangaziland's most prestigious universities and is a rival to schools like Blue Coast University, The university of Auster and Imperial Military Academy.

The grass field is home to the OU Lions. The team won the rights to host the Royals National Team by winning season 34 of the Collegiate Football Association. The grounds are located on the 'Downtown Campus'. The area surrounding the university should provide access to many entertainment and nightlife experiences. There are a wide range of hotels, restaurants and parks among some of Vangaziland's most prime commercial real estate.

Royals Take Hard Fought Match

Vangaziland enters the 33rd edition of the World Lacrosse Championships ranked 2nd internationally. This spot has taken years to achieve and has seen many players come and go. People like midfielder Jake Carrs rose to fame in Vangaziland, finally retiring as the team hit its peak. The Vangaziland Royals have fought cross-channel rival Wrexwic for a spot near the top of the field. The latter team now ranks 4th.

Wrexwic and Vangaziland went on a tear between seasons 28 and 30. In WLC 28, Vangaziland defeated Wrexwic in the finals for the first LAX championship in the Empire. It was a match which likely saw groans from many international fans, as Wrexwic shares close proximity and ties to the Vannish Empire. The Vangazi slipped slightly in latter years. Wrexwic went on to win WLC 29 and WLC 30. Vangaziland returned to the top 3 for the 30th edition.

Vangaziland and Wrexwic met again for WLC 32 in the 3rd place game. This was the latest battle for Imperial dominance. Vangaziland had entered that season ranked 1st. The Royals defeated Wrexwic 11-9.

This brings us to WLC 33. Many see this as a new era, with Abanhfleft having usurped the top spot. "We kind of mailed it in last year", said Coach Larry Hootsen. "We fought and played as well as we could, but we didn't set or push the tempo. We got away from Vannish lacrosse."

Vangaziland made less changes this season, hoping to work on team chemistry. Taye James spoke on his transition from greenhorn to veteran. "I remember being the new guy", James said. "I used to look up to Jake Carrs and wonder if I could fill his shoes. I've played a lot of good lacrosse for this country. I think the time to step up is now."

The Royals kicked things off with a match against Cheergirls. They are ranked 13th and are known for a resilient and robust plan of attack. "They're a team that can surprise you", said keeper Janet Reesedottir. Things started rough for Janet as Cheergirls began things with a daring run. Vangaziland found themselves down 4-2 early in the 1st quarter.

"Our defensive line felt sluggish", said defenseman Avery Tantskii. "We had to pick up the pace and get one step ahead of them."

Taye James made several big plays which helped the Vannish offense recover. He scored three goals early in the game to bring the score to 6-6. Taye would end up leading all Vannish scorers for the night with 7 goals on the whole. He added 3 assists, two of which came in the 4th quarter. "Towards the end, I think they expected me to shoot more", James said in a postgame interview. "Defenders switched more and I made the extra pass."

Another strong scorer was attackman Lizzie Borhanson. Liz is one of the team's co-captains and is a major part of Vangaziland's offensive leadership. She plays with a vocal, commanding presence. "I don't want to say I play better against female teams", Liz said. "But I try to get in where I fit in. I found room tonight and was able to put a body on defense in a way I might not be able to do against huge defensemen."

Borhanson scored 5 goals and tallied one pretty assist to Taye James. Both players crossed the field diagonally. Big Scott McLaughlin set a screen, which gave speedy James room to run. Lizzie tossed a quick flip pass from a cradle before stopping and changing directions. The move was abrupt enough to toss an air of confusion towards the defense. Taye rocketed his shot soon after into the bottom right corner.

Midfielder Stella Dahl added two goals of her own. One came from a fast break pass from Taye James. She also took a fairly long range shot off of movement and passing on the attacking front. A feint of a screen drew defensive attention away from Dahl for just enough time for her to run into space and launch a deep shot.

Left handed Samuel Perry scored his lone goal for Vangaziland in the third quarter. It came off a ground ball and quick run in from his side of the field.

One difference was that no goals came 'from the X' or behind goal. This was a staple of Tony Tute and a major part of Vannish scoring for many seasons. "I can't say we won't go back to the X", said Coach Hootsen. "We just saw different opportunities today."

Vannish fans spoke of how excited they were for another WLC season. "Lacrosse is life", said NSSCRA driver Floyd Hackerbee. "This is what it's about right here. I hope the team pushes hard and doesn't take anything for granted. They could go somewhere."

International Basketball Championship and Vangaziland Royals point guard Steven Eaglesen also spoke on match one. "It was fun to watch", Eaglesen said. "All it would have taken was one last Cheergirls run. Defense needs credit here. They buttoned down the hatches and snuck away a close one. I'm a fan."

Vangaziland will take on 10th ranked Union of Quincy for match 2.

The Banijan-Sarzonian Lacrosse Comparison on display as Banija drops the Stars 13-9 in their WLC home opener

Image
Banijan lacrosse player celebrate their opening WLC win over the Stars of Sarzonia

HERZEGOVINA CITY, MORAVICA- The World Lacrosse Championships have always been a challenge. But we talked about the importance of the team getting off to a strong start, especially opening with 2 straight home games. The advantage of opening up with a front-loaded home schedule, as we have, is that it gives us the best opportunity to start ahead, and give us some breathing room going into the stretch run of group play. We all saw what happened to the team at WLC 32- we were behind the 8 ball from the word go, never really got back in front of it, and since we were always playing catchup, we got an extremely poor draw in the early rounds and were sent packing long before we wanted to be. With our team finding a way into Pot 1 this time around, as well as the front-loaded home schedule, it was imperative that we did whatever it took to ensure that we got off to that strong start.

And that we did. We had a close affair against Sarzonia, but we ultimately came out in front. A 13-9 victory to open this tournament to wipe the taste out of our mouths from the last tournament, was just what the doctor ordered. This team looked strong in the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational, and it proved that it can compete against some of the strongest in the multiverse with their win at Kizza I Field against the Stars. There are a lot of similarities between Sarzonian and Banijan lacrosse, and a lot of differences. The similarities start at both beginnings- Sarzonia went to the Final in their first ever attempt at the World Lacrosse Championships, while the Banijans also went to the Final in our first ever attempt. The differences, of course are stark- Sarzonia won that one, and then won four more. For us, we haven't been back to the Final.

So what does the history mean to both teams? Well, of course, Sarzonia's head coach is a former WLC champion himself(there are a lot of people who are former champions since they have five rings). But of course, the championship expectations weigh on him heavily. But you can say that's fair- Sarzonia has a crazy amount of success in this tournament, winning it again and again and again. That kind of pressure is expected. And then, you look at Banija. The 21st WLC team, at this point, may be something like a curse. Imagine if we had simply made the tournament's quarterfinals. A nice run, but one that would have long faded out of minds and hearts by now. But we didn't. We went to the final, and that built expectations of getting back.

Nobody's met those expectations. We have seen just how hard it is to get back to that point. We've been to the semifinals thrice since then- in WLC 22, we lost to Abanhfleft twice in Banija, and a third time in the semifinal. In WLC 25, we lost to Abanhfleft(of course) in the semifinal. In WLC 31, we went back to the semifinal, only to fall once more. And in back-to-back tournaments on home soil, we disappointed the fanbase again. Such high expectations for WLC 28, and then losing in a Round of 16 match to Juvencus, who had a losing record. WLC 29, co-hosted with Razenthuria, we bombed so hard out of the group stage, that the Banijan Lacrosse Federation was literally dissolved, and the Olympic Committee of Banija declared itself the governing body of lacrosse in the country. They cleaned house, and fired literally every player and coach from that team.

Drastic? Yes. We have those same championship expectations as Sarzonia. Ogunsola is under the same pressures as Whitlock. But should he be? On one hand, yes. Both Sarzonia's and Banija's teams are talented enough to make it not only to Cassadaigua, but to win at least a couple of games once they get there. On the other hand, you're talking about the five-time champions in terms of Sarzonia, while we've won a silver medal once. Maybe the lacrosse community in Banija is too full of itself. One silver medal 35 years ago should not be the driver of national team expectations today- and yet, that team, Banija's best team, has given shackles to every team following, leading to this unhealthily high expectations.

Let's drop them. For once, maybe this nation can appreciate the fact that we've built a serious contender in lacrosse, one that has taken home multiple important trophies(the 1st Challenger's Cup and the Moravica Lacrosse Invitational), and has been ranked in the top 10 of the WLC rankings essentially since the word go. Stop comparing them to a team from 35 years ago. Stop comparing them to others. Just support your team, enjoy what we have, and take it a game at a time.
