Paths of Glory had quite a strong impact on me as a kid, one of those films you kind of idly latch onto of a Sunday afternoon and slowly become thoroughly absorbed into.. still, 103, quite a life, as he says himself “Life is like a B-movie script. It’s that corny. If someone offered me my life story to film, I’d turn them down flat.”

I always think of him in an anecdote his son Michael told on one of those TCM five-minute tribute things. Michael said he was on the set of a movie his dad was doing, maybe The Bad and the Beautiful, and Kirk was doing a scene where he had to kiss Lana Turner ferociously. Over Lana's shoulder he could see Michael and after a couple of takes he said, "Michael, please go stand somewhere else, I can't do this with you standing there watching me."

A great actor.

He had a severe stroke in 1996. He lost the ability speak for a time, regaining it only because he pushed through an aggressive therapy regimen. So yeah, he kind of stopped working, but he turned up now and then, at awards shows.

I liked the tribute they did for him where they got a children's choir to sing a Russian childrens song his mother sing to him when he was little. Never thought I would see Kirk reduced to tears.

An undoubted legend who lived a rich an extraordinary life.

It was only two of his films from a wide and sometimes underappreciated body of work, but I always thought he was remembered for the wrong Kubrick film; he's extraordinary in Paths of Glory. It's one of those rare films where you can forget that you're watching KIRK DOUGLAS.

He was more than just a film star. He also deserves to be remembered for his key role in breaking the anti-communist Hollywood blacklist (by insisting that Dalton Trumbo be given a scriptwriting credit on Spartacus), and he and his second wife Anne quietly gave away tens of millions of dollars to various charitable causes.


All of that said, I imagine that the 103-year-old Olivia de Havilland - whose Oscar for Gone With the Wind To Each His Own is one more Oscar than Douglas (to Hollywood's shame) ever won - will be just slightly irritated this morning over reading all of the obituaries describing Douglas as the last of the real stars from Hollywood's Golden Age.

Ooops; de Haviland was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1940 for Gone With the Wind, but didn't win. She won Best Actress for To Each His Own in 1946.

Time for a rewatch of Spartacus. I'm glad that news coverage of his death has featured his role in resisting the Hollywood blacklist; the good deeds people do should be remembered as much as their great talent.

I thought he had died in the 90s. Maybe I had confused that with the stroke.

Either way, he was a masterclass in acting, and a standard-bearer for Hollywood, both in terms of acting acumen and overall discpline with the craft. RIP, thoughts with the also lovely Douglas family.

Oh yea. I forgot Paths of Glory. Brilliant performance and you are right; you forget it’s Kirk. If anybody hasn’t seen it, worth the watch.

cohorts and disposition are historically accurate and majestic. while for paths of glory, greatest movie for nest assault and for majestic characters.
