So more or less, one can just have their character show up with the assumption they've been invited, and either chat someone else up or sit around?

Basically yes. We had a discussion a while back about whether or not you have to knock on the door and be invited into Vasyutin's house before you can interact with people but my character is currently at the door ushering anyone in so its not an issue anymore.
