Christmas! Have you Seen Die Hard Yet?

Postby Forsher » Tue Dec 24, 2019 4:09 am

Is it just me or did we forget to have a Christmas thread last year? And 2017 and 2016. Huh. Anyway, happy Christmas! (And associated, less capitalist holidays.)

Was it just me or was Christmas Eve day hot? And it's still pretty warm now!

Anyway, are you a Christmas fan? A mere enthusiast? Fun for a day, and just a day? Or, perhaps, an apologetic Scrooge? Doesn't matter, here's a place for the "Ho Ho Ho" (pls, no machine guns) and the "Bah! Humbug!"

Muppets Christmas Carol, best Christmas Carol?

Die Hard best Christmas film!?

And the real question... is Christmas with the Kranks under-rated? Dat tan, though.

Actually, it's been a while since I watched a Christmas film. We unplugged the aerial a while back and, well, I know Netflix has a bunch of 'em but the last movies I watched were Star Wars. And the surprisingly Christmasy Ghostbusters 2. It's been a looong time since I saw the Muppets Christmas Carol... we had it on VHS.

Christmas TV specials tend to be very, very cringey. Like a Christmas movie without the "holiday warmth". Saw the Mixed-ish one the other day... classic example of the genre.

So... yeah... been a very un-Christmasy Christmas on my end. Even given the summer time setting (look at the iconography). No family round this year (nor visiting them), either. Oh, yeah, no tree too! Haven't even dived into the capitalism... although we've been eyeing up the Boxing Day sales. Probably spend some of tomorrow figuring out what to look for in terms of a particular purchase. Should be nuts.

So, what say ye, NSG? Christmas Cheer? Or Yuletides Doubts? Or, maybe, what is this?

Also, your life in Christmas movies.

I'm a leftie atheist who loves Christmas, which doesn't make sense even to me.

Muppet Christmas Carol is indeed a true classic, up there with Scrooge (with Finney) and other such Christmas gems like Die Hard.

The food is good, but spending time with loved ones is even better. Presents are nice too. :)

I am honestly slightly annoyed that channels like Cartoon Network or Nick don't play Christmas specials anymore, mainly because they either don't air the shows that had the specials anymore or because they just don't care.

And I'm not talking about the sappy and saccharine specials, no, I'm talking about the weird stuff. Like Billy and Mandy where Santa became a blood thirsty vampire and one of the vampires is played by Malcom McDowell, or when Ed, Edd, and Eddy retold the story of the 3 Wise Men, except they were trying to steal everyone's shit, etc...

Other than that, I'm poor so I don't get to celebrate Christmas.

An action Christmas movie with young Bruce Willis. Sounds tops hey.

Nah, it's a ranking. But they never made the fifth one so don't watch it.

For me Christmas is no different than the Fourth of July, and Halloween. It’s just another reason to decorate the house and have parties. For me there’s absolutely zero religious meaning

Die Hard is a great Christmas movie but I might instead watch Die Hard With a Vengeance, which is not a Christmas movie but it is the best Die Hard.

I will also put on the Bojack Horseman Christmas episode, the Festivus episode of Seinfeld, the South Park one with all the songs (It's Christmastime in hell!), and the Family Guy Road to the North Pole.

Probably A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation too.

Honestly I'm surprised the Jesus option is winning (although, 3 votes out of 8 is... yeah).

Christmas is almost the perfect capitalist holiday. The only problem is that you're not meant to work on it! Think about it. The whole thing is about consumption, the major iconography comes from advertising, there's a whole genre of films about Christmas messaging (which usually have 0 religious references or, alternatively, Home Alone it and the film itself isn't religious but a character or two might be), people associate Christmas with watching those films (and any affiliated ads or product placement, of course) and the whole modern Christmas industry is meant to have been kick started by a book, i.e. something one buys!

(Hmm... Dickens may have just been reading the trend. Whatever. That's even more capitalist!)

Easter? You buy only one type of thing. Valentine's Day? Excludes too much of the population. Thanksgiving? Too few countries. Halloween? More countries, but still not as many. Guy Fawkes? Everyone tries to ban the essential product... or already has. And so on...

Add to Foe's List...

Seriously, watch it... it's good. Page may be right that the third one is better, though (today, I prefer the first, tomorrow? who knows?). But it's only the first one that is a Christmas film (the second one is merely set at the same time).

Ignoring all the action movie stuff, it's a pretty classic idea... see the Christmas trailer edit linked in the OP. That is not a misrepresentation of the film's themes... although it glosses over the plot a bit.

What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

Die Hard is merely Christmas-adjacent. Much of The Godfather takes place around Christmas but it's hardly a Christmas movie. Now, Love Actually ...

The most Christmas Christmas for me is waking up and seeing snow. Coming from the Midwestern US, there's usually a 50-50 chance of snow, but it's been so warm this past week, we won't get any this time.

if there's anything my family would watch for the holiday, it's A Charlie Brown Christmas. Or maybe Frosty the Snowman, which was my favorite Christmas film as a kid.
