Okay JJ, how many superweapons will this film have?

Yes.

My Review for Rise Of Skywalker
I thought it was a pretty good movie it was a good improvement from the Last Jedi. I was pretty surprised that Rey turned out to be Palpatine's grandkid and a good plot twist. The space battle was epic and felt like a real Star Wars battle, the only problem I had with the battle itself is the horses they were just so out of place in that battle. Rey's fight with the Senate himself was epic and I got excited when I heard Qui Gon and Anakin speak to Rey glad they had a speaking role in the movie. Overall it was a good movie and to me, it was a satisfying end to the Skywalker saga!

If I recall correctly (admittedly, my memory is somewhat hazy), large portions of the Imperial fleet were unaccounted for (as in, they went missing).

To my knowledge, upon the break-up of the Empire, certain splinter groups did not just lay down and die.

So... uhh... the Senate added the planet killers after he took the ships.

Better to use spoiler tags, some people here have not watched the movie.

So, are all these thousands of star destroyers crewed by 50 year old sailors and 70+ year old officers?

False. The issues in ROS in no way redeem the hot mess that was TLJ.

TLJ was not a hot mess. It has a coherent plot. It told emotional stories. It was, like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a movie more about people overcoming themselves rather than solely about people overcoming external obstacles. In The Last Jedi, the Resistance might not have won outright, but every person in the resistance learned a lesson.

Say what you want about it, you might not like the story beats and might have preferred other things, but the plot was coherent and emotional. Return of Skywalker (what a dumb name, god) has only one truly emotional moment, which builds only on previous movies and real life, and not on itself. It shows that, if you take no risks, build solely on nostalgia and don't try to actually grow the characters, you get something way worse than The Last Jedi.

Which, for the record, is my favourite Star Wars movie.

Return of Skywalker is just a movie about people trying to beat an arbitrary timeline trying to beat up Palpatine who wants to blow up the universe. The plot is no more complicated, and no more emotional or deep.

It is not a good twist.

It was not laid down at all. There were not hints. Palpatine was only mentioned once in the two movies previously. Even the Force Flashback in The Force Awakens did not point at Palpatine. It was certainly unexpected, but only because there was no reason to believe that she was at all. Palpatine does not have canon children. He does not have a canon partner. This is never explained. It is just stated, not even proof given. It is exposed upon us, the audience, and it does not have any of the build-up. The only thing it says is that 'yes, if you want to mean anything in the Star Wars universe, you have to be connected to people who came before'. Which, inadvertently, is the message this movie is trying to send: Star Wars will always lean on hollow references to its past, and will not try to do something new or bold.

It shows exactly what is wrong with this movie. It shoves in references to the lore to make you think 'Oh, I know that!' but it does not try to stand on its own two feet. Both Palpatine and Palpatine's relation to Rey were never hinted at, so making Palpatine the bad guy behind everything gives is nothing. It could not have been predicted. A mystery that cannot be solved is not a good mystery, and JJ tries to tell us that it is. Palpatine and his granddaughter were brought in just to please the fans, without adding anything new, and it was hollow and cynical.

Haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’ve read up on the plot. I’m so uninterested in the overarching story that spoilers don’t personally bother me.

I will say that as weird as the plot is, it’s somewhat plausible for Palpatine to have Imperial resources still at his disposal. The new canon has a plot point of Palpatine having a contingency to intentionally destroy the Empire and reform it in the Unknown Regions.

So there’s some basis in Palpatine’s strength.
TG me about my avatars for useless trivia.

Probably because Palpatine was not actually intended to be the main villain, but Rian Johnsons determination to make TLJ into a standalone movie rather than the 2nd movie of a trilogy meant that there was no actual Big Bad for TROS, and between TFA and TLJ Ren and Hux both had been too thoroughly humiliated to have been credible as the sudden overarching antagonist. So, options were to introduce a brand new character, and try to build them up as the big main villain of a trilogy and defeat them all in the space of the 3rd movie, or bring back an established villain.

Well to me it is a good plot twist because in the Last Jedi I thought Rey's parents would remain as nobodies. When it was revealed that she was Palp's grandkid I was surprised making it a good twist to me anyway.

Yeah I agree that Palpatine having a wife is strange considering there was no mention of her in the prequels. But I'm sure Disney will have Marvel make comics about Palpatine's wife and kid to give us further detail. And the fact that there was no hints to both Rey and Palpatine is what makes it a twist for me at the time thinking Rey would be related to Palpatine was outlandish, but now it isn't thanks to the new movie.

Should also point out that the only source for Rey's parents being nobodies is Kylo Ren and his claims that he had a 'Force vision' that told him all about it. A 'revelation' that only comes, by the way, when he's trying to convince her to just let everyone die and play house with him and the First Order.

What, introduce a brand new character, like Return of the Jedi did? Sure, the Emperor was mentioned before, but he was never shown (he actually changed appearance between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi).

Yes, it would have been better to make a new character than to let a dead one return. That’s really the simple answer. Even in your dichotomy (which is false, Hux and Kylo could have made great villains, especially if Kylo doubled down on his new sort of evil.there could have been a First Order civil war. Hell, give me ten minutes, I will come up with a better villain myself.

You have to judge these movies on their own merit, so you cannot claim it was logical because some comic in the future might explain it. At the moment of watching, it is unexplained and dumb as hell. It is an actual plot hole.

And something being unexpected does not make it a good twist. Good twists are those which are in plain sight, but which you fail to spot. For example, the plot twist at the end of The Last Jedi. Of course Luke did not come out to fight, and if you look back, you can see that he actually makes no impression in the salt. It is quite logical in the end, and you could have guessed it. But it still takes you by surprise. There is no art in a twist that should have been impossible by all measure.

Imagine if, at the end of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan had told Anakin he was his father. That would have made no sense (perhaps even more sense than Rey being a Palpatine), but would be very surprising because of how dumb it was.

Hell, we got that new First Order general dude who ended up as the main guy by the end anyway.

You make some good points, and the twist should have developed more backbone before JJ revealed that she was Palpatine's grandchild.

It wasn’t as completely bad as the trainwreck that is TLJ- I appreciated the very good opening and decent ending. It had incredible moments and amazing scenes, and as standard, visuals are stunning.

But everything in between was utter shit. The plot was extremely convoluted, Rey is still a Mary Sue, Rose is alive when she should be extremely dead, most emotion and drama were ham-fisted attempts to emulate the originals, and there was zero context for absolutely anything and everything. Many parts intended to be high points of either humor or action felt extremely forced. All in all, it felt as if the screenwriters simply threw everything they could at the audience and hoping it stuck- some of it did and some of it didn’t, and the inevitable result is a haphazard film with terrible pacing and seemingly rushed production that cut corners frequently and didn’t follow at all.

In all honesty, despite some limited flaws in the plot that were unavoidable and the occasional virtue signal, this had the astounding potential to be an amazing film that redeemed the Disney Trilogy and lived up to at least the Prequels in classic Star Wars spirit- if they at least cut the bullshit, gave us context and stayed in line with conventions in the series, and made the film longer, much longer. They should have gone the Endgame route and let the audience take it all in for a moment, splitting up action and plot points with soft notes and at least some properly revealed exposition.

All in all, the Rise of Skywalker and the Disney Trilogy was amateurishly composed drivel that had all the hallmarks of bad fanfictions.
Now, a series having the attributes of fanfictions isn’t necessarily bad, as there are plenty of good fanfictions that almost live up to the original work- but only if they actually listened to the fans, which they didn’t at all.

I truly believe that the Rise of Skywalker was a half-decent film at least and best, but it had the potential to be so much more that it hurts.

I wouldn’t discourage one from seeing the movie but I definitely won’t encourage one either.

I wonder when Palpatine was talking about all the Sith being within him does this mean the Sith have their own Force Ghost that takes over another Sith's body.

Alright, a better villain for Rise of Skywalker:

Image

Admiral Enric Canady

Older brother of the late captain Moden Canady, commander of the Fulminatrix Star Dreadnought. Admiral Enric Canady blames both Kylo Ren's recklessness and General Hux's stupidity for the loss of his brother. While Hux is trying to supplant the new Supreme Leader, and Ren is trying to establish himself and hunt down the last remainders of the Resistance, Enric Canady is playing them both against one another, while also playing the remnants of the New Republic and pretending to be a double agent for them. Somewhere at the end of the second act, he kills Hux and leaves Kylo Ren for dead, taking control of the First Order completely in order to take control of the galaxy for himself. In the end, a surviving Ben Solo, having been turned to the light side by both dying Leia and Rey, gives some sort of rallying speech to the fleet, and the First Order fleet consumes itself in a gigantic space battle. This way, we can double down on the whole 'your past does not define you' narrative of the earlier movies, instead of turning around and saying 'lol yeah birth is everything'.

I'm actually going to write a script for this, so if there are any suggestions...
