VIII.XVIII.MMXIX
To my patrons in Pan-Asiatic States,

My name is James Dixon, and I was the B.A.S. specialist who handled this project. I have 15 years of experience handling underwater/partially submerged project sites for B.A.S., and I am thankful my expertise could be beneficial to this project.

With that being said, the location of this dig in a cavern below the waters surface made this project especially challenging. Additional costs were incurred to keep both staff from B.A.S. and your nation safe. These costs are reflected in your final bill, which was given to the agency you assigned to

As for the dig itself, our investigation focused primarily on uncovering how and why a group of soldiers ended up in this cavern. Our initial survey revealed a large amount of human fecal matter in the cavern, as well as the what appears to be an attempt to track time on a wall- indicates that at least a portion of the soldiers were alive when they entered the cave. A number of the corpses appear to have been buried, where as others were seemingly left where they lay. Our morticians estimate that the first individuals to die passed on as long as a month before the last.

We then brought in geological experts to analyze the cavern. Our men and women concluded that the cavern was the result of a sink hole that formed around the same time as the soldiers died.

With this in mind, our theory surrounding the unit's demise is thus: While marching, the combined weight of the unit surpassed the load limit of the wet surface, causing the land to slide out from under their feet, leaving them to fall into a growing sink hole. The men were trapped in by the moving surface, which left them with a small amount of air and light. Our analysis of the bodies indicates the majority of the men were injured- with broken bones and head contusions.

Our analysis also indicated something more grim. Several of the bodies that had been left unburied featured advanced decay that would be unusual for a corpse of such an age. Forensic lab analysis revealed human teeth marks on many of the bones of these soldiers. It is likely that the soldiers who survived the longest did so by cannibalizing their companions. See the attached image.

Image

All of this is obviously tragic. However, there is some good that has come out of this dig. Soldiers who could be identified have had their remains respectfully transferred to their relatives/descendants. Those who could not have been transferred over to your government. I entrust these fallen men to your care.

It has been a great privilege to serve your nation in my first international project, I look forward to working with you again in the future.

Sincerely,
Dr. James Dixon,

To my patrons in Alpes a Septentrionali Imperium,

My name is Dr. Francis Hill, and I had the privilege of leading a B.A.S. research team in conducting a Field Survey in your Western Alpes.

As you stated in your request for our services, the knowledge available to us about the Alpini Tribe is minimal. Thus, to gain some idea of where to start on this project, my team conducted a large scale satellite topographical survey of the area. Our findings revealed a large number of small hills in the area, varying in height but remarkably consistent in base width. These hills were our first, and eventually primary sites of investigation.

However, in order to investigate some of these sites, areas of forest surrounding the mounds had to be removed. In order to conserve your wonderful nation's natural beauty, B.A.S. staff will happily replant these trees, but be advised this will add to your final bill.

We determined that these, "hills" were in actuality man made burial mounds that can be dated to the period of time of the Alpini Tribe's rule. A cut out of the burial mound structure can be viewed here:

Image

Unlike many other ancient culture's burial sites, the Alpini Mounds were never meant to be accessed again, or left by the soul of the deceased. This prevented any form of tomb raiding, as to do so would require the type of excavation our team engaged in. However, the loosely packed nature of the mound soil allowed for many sites to become significantly eroded, leaving little behind these millennial later. Of the 34 burial sites we identified, only 11 yielded any remains- although it is not inconceivable that some of these mounds were used for other purposes.

While most mounds had only one central cavity as shown above, one mound, the surprisingly the most most shallowly stepped one, had multiple, "rooms" inside.

Image

Marked in yellow are multiple tombs, each growing more opulent as they near the center. Green rooms contained weapons and gold, where as orange rooms contained altars presumably for sacrifices. Rooms marked in white were empty and without embellishment, presumably storage rooms during construction.

The large room marked in blue featured an altar larger than the rest, as well as the majority of the weapons in the mound. Behind the East wall is a opening containing a body that, we can say with 80% certainty given our understanding of the language and customs of the Alpini, that this is the tomb of Froid Gundowech, the king our team was tasked with finding.

In addition to the recovery of the King, our team unearthed a large number of bronze swords, axes, and other bronze and gold ornaments, as well as the remains of 15 other individuals. All of these have been transferred to the proper authorities in your nation.

In total, the cost of this Field Survey, one of the largest in our history, comes out to $2,430,689 - this amount has billed to your government.

It was an honor to make history uncovering history in your nation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Francis Hill,

To my patrons in Imperium of The Huron,

My name is Dr. Shannon Kowalska. I feel as though it is necessary to give you an update on the progress of our research, considering the length of time since our last correspondence.

Unfortunately, that progress is not particularly substantial. My personal life (i.e. the birth of my second child) prevented me from traveling to your great nation until late August of this year. As you are no doubt aware, the weather in the area of the city of Detroit has been more than slightly inhospitable. This prevented us from undertaking much of the work we had scheduled out.

Now as the weather becomes colder, ground frost will make undertaking the dig much too costly and labor intensive at this time. We expect to be able to resume work once the first Spring thaw comes.

I am certain that this will be disappointing to you, but have no doubt that our work will continue as soon as possible. I look forward to returning to your great nation.

Sincerely,

To my patrons in Ko-oren,

I am Francis Holladay, the lead archaeologist assigned to the research project in Gabsoren. I must apologize for the delay in the conclusion of my research. Unfortunately, the dig size you requested, a "Large Dig" proved insufficient for the scale of the area you wanted us to investigate. This is no fault of your own- as you had no way of knowing how our instigation would progress.

Our research lead to the discovery of 17 sites between Gabsoren and Mayara, exactly in the range your records suggested. However, we were initially disappointed, as each site seemed to only have been the site of one relatively small stone structure, typically on a central mound. The most well preserved foundation of such a structure is pictured below:

Image

Each of the structures we discovered were of a similar size, seemingly built according to a rough blueprint- consistently having an altar/furnace in the center, surrounded by concentric rings of walls. The placement of these structures at localized high points and the central altars- large enough to burn a small cow in, implies to us that these structures were temples of some variety.

Initially, we believed that each of the sites discovered could be an individual established settlement. However, the lack of any other structures at any of these sites implies to us that the community that inhabited the area was at least partially nomadic. Our hypothesis is that the tribal group would move from location to location, living in temporary structures until the land proved infertile. Having only a rudimentary understanding of agriculture, it is likely that once Nitrogen in the soil was completely depleted, the community would move on to a new location.

No evidence of a large, permanent city was discovered.

As mentioned earlier, this dig far exceeded the work (and amount of time) required for a typical, "Large Dig." As such, the total cost of this dig is: $474,000. The bill for this amount has been sent to your finical offices. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Holladay,

Thank you for your research. The work you've done is of great importance to the archaeological community of the country, and the various dig sites around this sizeable region has attracted many onlookers as well, sparking a lot of interest in archaeology and ancient Ko-orenite history! Even if the results of the dig weren't as expected, this is also a possible outcome of any scientific study. The exposure in the media as well as definitive answers about our proud nation's history were well worth the cost.

The bill will be fully paid for by the Salamantic Universities, an organisation that pools together research funds from various universities. The universities involved are the Willowbourne Institute of Humanities, the Gehrenna National University, the Aerellenuniversitet, and the University of Marinwood.

To my patrons in UniversalCommons,

I am Francis Holladay, the lead archaeologist assigned to the research project in the Liberty City area. Let me first thank you for graciously hosting me in your beautiful city. I may one day see if a small property could be purchased in the area.

Secondly, I hope you can forgive any excitement that comes out in my prose. Truth be told, I've never been on a survey quite like this, or that has yielded this spectacular of a result. To that end, I must thank you for allowing us the use of your radar equipment. This, combined with sonar equipment rented from the Bisi military, are responsible for the discoveries our team made.

Noting the significant maritime history of your fine nation, particularly centered around Liberty City, our team decided to use our equipment to investigate the coastline and seas surrounding the capital. This was a slow process, particularly given the underwater topography that makes the city such an effective port.

After extending our research to just beyond the edge of the Continental Shelf, we uncovered what can only be described as the jackpot:

Image

A largely intact 19th Century privateering ship. It is probable this is one of the ships under the command of Robert Redbeard II, that was sunk in the 1860's War of the Croun Islands. The exact name of the vessel and its commanding officers have not yet been determined, further investigations- likely by smaller remote control vessels- will be necessary. Whether or not you wish to take up that project with our firm or lead it yourselves, I will be following closely and will be happy to advise on any future projects.

Out of respect for the fallen men of the ship, and to preserve the structural integrity of the wreck, there are currently no plans to resurface the vessel. However, several artifacts were able to be received from the area around the ship. These include:
    *14 Large Cast Iron Cannons
    *23 Cast Iron Cannon Balls
    *11 Swords/Sword fragments
*1 Chest containing 17 pounds of Silver Coins
Perhaps most excitingly, our team has developed a 3-D model of the ship wreck. This will not only prove useful to future explorations of the site, but also allow the public to experience this long hidden piece of history. That model can be seen HERE.

This survey was much larger than your average exploration. The value of the artifacts recovered and the cost of surfacing these heavy objects inflated the cost, as did the creation of the high definition 3-D model. We believe these discoveries to be priceless. The final total cost of $3.47 Million has been billed to your offices.

Leading this project has been one of the great honors of my professional career. I look forward to your response and your plans for the future of the site.

Sincerely,
Dr. Francis Holladay, Lombardi University, B.A.S.

From: Universal Commons
To: Dr. Fancis Holliday, Lombardi University, B.A.S.

We are most pleased with your find. We are sending you $3.47 Million in Nationstates Dollars. We intend to house a full exhibit in the UniversalCommons Maritime Museum and create a traveling exhibit. We expect that this will generate considerable revenue as we will be charging a fee for entrance to see the exhibit on the famous Privateer and his family. Redbeard's Raiders still exists as a company for hire. They have tendered a considerable request for the recovered objects.

We intend to build a replica of the ship based on the 3D model and sail it out of Liberty City to the different cities of the UniversalCommons.

The site will be given a blessing by Harmonite Priests as a request from Alcestis Redbeard the current Executive Director of Redbeard's Raiders.

We will leave the ship intact on the bottom, make a copy of it and collect the artifacts surrounding the ship. The Undersea Salvage and Recycling Cooperative along with some divers from Redbeard's Raiders Privateering Cooperative wish to work with you on this.

Is there any information about your nation or this location our experts should be aware of? This area is the largest of the subterranean colonies of the ancient Te'hari race, as well as evidence of short-term Alluvaluri inhabitation, before said Alluvaluri exterminated the Te'hari. Also, during your work there may be several other Omonrosian scientific teams present, as the area is already excavated and somewhat well-researched-we only require analysis of several recently discovered areas and a dig into some areas in which we believe collapses or shifting of Omonros' plate tectonics may have hidden areas of the اسؘخشؔ الرؔهؕؾمؔ that are now cut off. Additionally, we will provide transportation to Omonros, housing, food, and access to discoveries we've made previously-including a full translation of the Te'hari language.

To my patrons in The Sovereign Kingdom of Omonros,

My name is Dr. Francis Hill, the lead researcher assigned to working in your great nation. I've been following the discoveries seemingly always being made at the 'اسؘخشؔ الرؔهؕؾمؔ' Site. It is truly an honor to get to see this location myself, and contribute my own abilities to the task of uncovering this area's history.

And the task we were assigned was no easy one- literally uncovering hidden areas of the site. Our initial research into the nature of the enclosed areas resulted in a compromise of hypothesizes. Our team determined through the use of several 3-D scans of the entrance to the site, and the resulting computer simulations, that the only possible way the site could have reached its current state is if
  • First, an large scale collapse of the entrance to the area.
  • Secondly, tectonic movement in the area pushed more strongly on the sections of the site that had been weakened by the collapse.

Our simulations suggest that the initial collapse of the area occurred at around the same time the Alluvaluri population was wiped out by the Te'hari. My subsequent hypothesis was that the Te'hari initially collapsed this part of the subterranean Alluvaluri community. Therefore, it follows that there must have been something of significance on the other side of the collapsed passageway.

Using mini-excavators initially designed for the Bisi Space Program, we were able to penetrate into the tectonicly pushed walls without risking setting off a tremor. These units, equipped with ground penetrating radar, were able to scan significantly more of the chamber than our researchers outside could have. The below image is a compilation of those results.

Image

The structure labeled no. 2 in that image seems to be consistent with forts/military storehouses found elsewhere in the underground settlement. It seems likely that, rather than attack this post outright, the Te'hari simply collapsed the surrounding passageways, effectively starving them out.

This theory cannot currently be confirmed, however, because a large scale excavation of these passageways could result in a large tremor, which would endanger not only our workers, but the entirety of the site. Our researchers are attempting to develop a method for reaching this area that would be safe using simulations, but no such method has yet been determined.

The use of equipment from the Bisi Space Program proved expensive, even at our discounted rates. The final total of $245,000 NSD has been billed to your offices.

It was an honor to make history uncovering history in your nation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Francis Hill,
