Am I the only one who thought Solo was actually the best Star Wars movie since ROTJ?

They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. That's both good and bad I think. Good because it always sucks when the trailers spoils the whole movie. Bad, because it seems like Abrams is still clinging to his mystery boxes as we approach the end of the trilogy.

I'm guessing that it's gonna be a bad time travel movie to retcon TLJ. Prove me wrong JJ.

Also, the music is actually really good, probably the best of the ST.

I'll admit that the trailer makes me more interested to see it. Not that I was ever not going to see it anyway, regardless of how I feel about the prior films.

Also I'll throw my two cents in. I'll take ROTS as my favorite movie since the OT, followed by R1, followed by Solo. And then AotC, TPM, TFA, and The Clone Wars movie.

After the last trailer, my hopes aren’t too high. I absolutely loved The Last Jedi. It took risks, made bold moves and really explored the galaxy, while really deepening the lore and asking important philosophical questions. That moment between Luke and Yoda was fantastic, and TLJ really had character.

This one, judging from the trailer, seems to have very little of that. From the trailers we have glanced quite a few action set pieces, but no real character development. Also, sticking in Palpatine now as a major bad, while Kylo Ren could have fit those shoes in a far more interesting manner, without foreshadow at all in the last films, seems really forced and typical of JJ’s mystery box storytelling.

I really dislike that JJ teased and foreshadowed in The Force Awakens without putting thought into those plot points. I believe that, if you set up a mystery, you have to have the answers prepared beforehand. Otherwise, there is no mystery. At the moment TFA came out, we could not possibly guess what the answers were to all those questions, because the bloody writers did not know. That’s not mystery writing. And I feel like they are going to do the same thing here, only at the end of a trilogy.

Best Star Wars film full stop.

The original films are extraordinarily dated in terms of plot and special effects.

Kylo Ren is boring as a villain. You don't make the Zuko character the actual big bad... they lack any of the structures. Similarly, if Palpatine's influence isn't around, Anakin can't have balanced the Force since there'd only be one Force user and they'd be Light-side, i.e. imbalance. I guess maybe Snoke or even Darth Maul...

Hopefully Star Wars will deliver the promised Zutara ship though (it, after all, lacks a Kataang). Trailer a bit mixed on that front :( .

In TLJ, Kylo Ren was incredibly conflicted, and I believe his conflicted past makes him perfect as an interesting villain with whom we can relate a bit more than Palpatine.

Snoke explained it perfectly: when Kylo Ren was brought to the dark side, Rey rose up to the ligt side to meet him. Snoke and Luke were each other’s balance, as Rey and Kylo are. When Snoke died, Luke had to die for balance.

I love conflicted Kylo.
And not-quite-Light Rey for that matter.
I hope they don't end up just reaffirming the Light/Dark dichotomy.

That's my favourite fan theory... that the Jedi are complete idiots and the problems started in the first place because they took something that is seemingly all about balance and turned it into "be all good". As far as I remember the video I got this idea from I believe they decided that the replacement order would be called Skywalkers or something, hence "Rise of Skywalker".

Evidence for this theory would be that the trailer showed Kylo vs Rey and Kylo & Rey. It didn't show Kylo/Rey (Reylo iirc) but one lives in hope.

That's pretty much why they can't function as main villains. Leaving them in conflict means they never experience character growth (usually a bad thing) and without an external force you've got to ask yourself, why are they conflicted?

I mean you might be able to make some pretentious artsy character study, but you just cannot have an ensemble that's about the two sides of a character slowly pulling them apart. Especially if they're being coerced into being the antagonist by the structure of the film.

TLJ can kind of make it work because it's only 2/3 of the way through the series. It is, in fact, exactly what Zuko does. First instalment = completely driven with signs of a greater complexity. Second instalment = massive conflict, ends with a heel turn. Third instalment = redemptive arc (it remains to be seen if Kylo will go this way or what).

The other reason it works in TLJ is because Rey's doing the opposite... being drawn from the Light to the Dark. This builds tension around which will "turn", if either. That story must ultimately be resolved in some fashion and if you're down to the final fight and the bad guy goes, "You know what, you're right" and surrenders it's very... pretentious artsy film.

Snoke explained it perfectly: when Kylo Ren was brought to the dark side, Rey rose up to the ligt side to meet him. Snoke and Luke were each other’s balance, as Rey and Kylo are. When Snoke died, Luke had to die for balance.

It still doesn't work perfectly because of Darth Maul.

Anachronism isn’t usually considered a good thing. The movies being dated doesn’t make them bad, it just makes them old.

I sort of agree that the originals are overly lauded. They’re often treated like holy grail movies above criticism, usually by people who saw them as kids both when they were out or years and years later, and people overlook just how much narm they have. Some of the flaws in the prequels people criticized are definitely there, just more subdued. Talk to those aging people who were at least teenagers when they first came out and they’ll be more likely to poke fun at the cheesiness.

But I still love them. They started it all, and they’re definitely more well made than the prequels. (Which I also like.)

I unironically believe that the prevalence of prequel memes improved fan perception of the movies.

I would normally say that anything that retcons TLJ is good, but a time travel plot may be the one thing to make me pause.

Though there is obviously going to have to be a lot of handwaving to get from the dead end TLJ left the story in, with the 'Resistance' being reduced to 10 people and the Millenium Falcon, to the apparent fleets and armies they're going to have in the new one.

And between the fact that it's JJ Abrams and the hardcore leaning on OT nostalgia they're doing (when I saw the first trailer I thought it was a joke or a fan edit), I expect it's essentially going to be a rehash of Return of the Jedi in any case.

I don't see how they could. They already copied the Endor subplot, with Han leading a strike team to disable the shields of a planet destroying weapon, back in TFA, and the whole throne room scene was copied in TLJ. The only parts left untouched are the Ewoks and the rescue of Han from Jabba. And it'd be hard enough to fit one of those into a movie whose predecessors have not set up either, nevermind both of them. I expect a lot of similarities to RotJ, but I just don't see how RoS could be to RotJ what TFA was to ANH.

Rebels already did it.

Who knows, maybe they made the writers of Rebels introduce time travel so that it wouldn't seem so weird when it happened in RoS?
