Technically I understand Pence would take over but I'd also have to believe he'd have to resign as well.

It would be interesting to see if any Republicans step out and announce a campaign.

Nothing, because he also needs to be tried and convicted by the Senate, and it's Rep. Majority so that's not happening

Well they thought that about Nixon as well, but once public opinion overwhelmingly turned everything changed. As I said it's unlikely but I'm curious as to what the process would be.

Nixon was never tried, he resigned before they could do anything and then got pardoned by his VP when he became Pres.

Also, Republicans (Well, most politicians) back then tended to be less corrupt and working only for the party, but his impeachment did set the precedent for all politicians in the US to move around and try doing more corrupt activities.

Nothing, because he also needs to be tried and convicted by the Senate, and it's Rep. Majority so that's not happening. So what's actually gonna happen is Trump will us it as a rallying cry in order to gain support against the "Corrupt" Dems in order to get him out of office because they don't like him, and depending on who the Dems pick to run (Probably Biden or Sanders), he'll win 2020.

Republicans have already stepped out to campaign, no one talks about them though.

Do you think that impeachment will change the mind of anyone not already voting for Trump? Sorry if that sounds aggressive, I actually am quite interested in your opinion on the matter.

There was a sheet comparing all the defences of Nixon to those of Trump and they were all basically the same, Nixon maintained support in the party for a surprisingly long time.

In fact, when these critics refer back to the Watergate era as a time of bipartisan commitment to the rule of law over politics, they get it exactly wrong. Defending the president at all costs, blaming investigators and demonizing journalists was all part of the Republican playbook during the political crisis leading up to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

No, it will not, because most of them voted for him either because he's a shithead or because they believe the Dems are somehow equally as corrupt as him and the Reps.

And modern day Republicans in government now have the belief of "Anything for the party."

So if there's anyway to keep the party in power, they'll do it, and in this case this impeachment call is actually helpful, as it stirs up Trump's base and gives him a rallying call to rely on.

I quite agree. I don't think impeachment is likely to be successful, but I don't think it will be very damaging to chances of a Democratic victory, either. It must carry on as a matter of principles and maintenance of the law more than anything, though I am hesitantly optimistic.

That I correct.

He'll win with the Indies who support him because they think the Dems are being mean and the Bernie Bros voting for him to spite the Dems because they'll be pissed off that Bernie didn't get chosen again (Just like they did in 2016).

Quite true. I have seen reports suggesting that Democrats don't need to win over Trump voters (which at this point they likely can't,) to win, but only need to better mobilize existing supporters.

You also miss the point. Sigh, the point wasn’t about going after trump, but going after Pence as well. If they go after Pence, to put Pelosi in the high office Republicans, and a fair amount of independents, will see it as nothing less than exploiting the law to remove republicans from the office and install a Democratic regime.

I don't think anyone needs to go after Pence, however I don't see how he can just assume the presidency given Trump is impeached. My specific question is given the hypothetical that Trump is impeached in some time around April, and Pence resigns beforehand, how do they nominate a candidate given they've missed the primaries.

I mean.. are primaries even required - I have a feeling they're not and the Republicans could simply nominate someone at a Convention while a caretaker president sits through to the elections.

The thing is I'm worried that the liberal base is too divided to actually form solid ground against Trump. I'm speaking as a staunch third party voter that I think we'll see a repeat of 2016 unless something drastic happens

Order of succession. President goes down, next man up. Simple as that.
