If we were to put a propaganda warning on every film that warranted one then half the movies released would be affected. Let people think for themselves.

Oh boy, yet another bout of "this work was made in this time period, therefore it should be changed/banned" childish rhetoric.
Nothing should be changed. To change it would imply that the film should never have been made in it's original form in the first place, which raises additional problems, like "where does it stop?"

Somewhere, there's a Buzzfeed article that says just that.

We need to talk honestly about how it glosses over the terrible aspects of the South during the Civil War period. I've seen the movie before, and a lot of it rubbed me the wrong way. I actually break with a lot of my fellow moderate conservatives here. Now, should it be banned? No. But that's not the same as saying we shouldn't re-evaluate it.

People really need to stop wanting something revised or banned because they don't like what it says.

USA should stop talking about RACE all the time.
You are daily talking about slavery more than 150 years after it had ended. I guess about half of USA population are more or less descendants of people who wasn't in USA at the time of slavery (latter imigrants).
Slavery is not political correctness, it is CNN propaganda daily brainwashing.

Gone with the wind is not a movie about slavery. It is about war, about love, it is even about money. It is not about slavery. The slavery is not discussed there in any meaningful way.
You are perceiving it about race only because your daily news outlets are brainwashing you that everything has to be connected with race (and race is about slavery).
For comparison, 150 years ago the serfdom was still in existence in such European countries as AustroHungary, Turkey and Russia (ok it ended about the same time. And before Napoleonic wars serfdom was widespread on the continent. A whatever you taunt about the race, serfdom in general is about the same conditions as the slavery. You don't see it repeated every day in media.

Nothing. Why can't we just enjoy it for what it is instead of tying to erase everything someone finds offensive? It was a different time when that film was made.

Absolutely not.
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

we don't need to beat our heads against history. what we do need is to understand how its mistakes actually happened and how to avoid repeating them.
people who claim this is the reason to study history,
unfortunately, are the first to do everything they can to prevent it from actually serving this potentially useful purpose.

as for the title itself, i've watched, on mom's old black and white tv, on the late late late show in the mccarthy era mid fifties, and i have to say "meh".
better movies? there have been thousands of them.

i'll give you two examples: disney's late 40s early 50s fantasia, and more recently, furtopia/zootopia.
unless pointless tragidy is your thing and that's your measure of greateness, then i guess "easy rider"

if you want fun, how about alice's restaurant?

but i mean, i'm sorry, but gone with the wind just isn't really all that high of a bar.

maybe that's just me, but i'd rather be entertained by seeing people figure out how to solve things, instead of gratuitous emotional conflict.
that's why i prefer to read fiction ABOUT science. the REAL science fiction that for profet holyrood, can never seem to figure out, nor even try.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"

What should be done about Gone With the Wind?

Postby Pacomia » Mon Sep 16, 2019 9:26 pm

Nothing. It’s classic media, and it should say stay unchanged. Hell, even if nobody had seen nor heard of it, it should stay unchanged. We shouldn’t edit pre-existing things just because someone complained.
