IN INTERVIEW, EDWARDS CLAIMS TO HAVE 'TOLD THE TRUTH BASED ON THE INFORMATION MADE AVAILABLE'
The ex-Defense Secretary has claimed information was "withheld" from him.
In the tell-all interview, Edwards said he felt that information was "deliberately withheld" from him.
"I told the truth based on the information made available to me in the aftermath of the [naval incident] with Zorasan. To my understanding, and that of the cabinet at large, Estmerish vessels had never violated Zorasani waters. In fact, I was under the impression that ships were under strict orders to dock at Lalgat".
Previously, Edwards had stated that the alleged naval incursion "never took place" and said the claims were "simply fabricated". He went further. accusing the Zorasani government of launching a smear campaign against Estmere over the Kennford Incident. The claims of a territorial violation were a part of such efforts, the ex-secretary claimed.
However, evidence published soon after by the Zorasani foreign ministry released camera footage from one of its own ships that reportedly intercepted the three Valor-class frigates. An analysis of the footage published by the Zorasani navy clearly shows one of the Valor-class frigates which was identified by its wide cabin and naval jack. Zorasan took Estmere to the Community of Nations over the issue, where a resolution condemning the alleged violation was defeated amid a strong show of support for Estmere by many international governments.
The issue has dogged the government for months, with opposition parliamentarians regularly calling for a legal inquiry into whether or not Edwards knowing mislead the public and international community in his claims and if there was any legal wrongdoing. With parliament in recess until 16 September, there is little opposition parties have been able to do.
Previously, a spokesperson for the Justice Secretariat said no such investigation was needed as Edwards had "done the proper thing by resigning".
However, Edwards has broken his silence over the issue, further stating in the interview that he felt as though he was "forced out" by the prime minister. When asked if it was a set up, Edward said "only [Prime Minister] Wilton-Smyth can answer that question".
Allies within his own party, the Progressives, were agitated that he was put in a position that required his resignation. Edwards is a close partner of Foreign Secretary and Deputy PM Anne Buckett, who is reportedly said to have been frustrated by the naval incident and voiced her concerns to Wilton-Smyth directly.
Opposition leader Robert Spencers (DLP) said it had "become exceeding clear" that a "full, independent" investigation was needed.
"We have a government secretary publicly saying he was misled by the prime minister over something that could have started a war with a foreign power" Spencers said in a statement released to the press. He said that if an independent review was not opened into the incident, that he would lead an effort in parliament to establish a parliamentary inquiry into the matter.
The governing coalition holds a clear majority in the lower house, however disgruntled backbenchers from the Progressives could vote in favor of such a motion in defense of Edwards. One senior Progressives backbencher said he felt as though the ex-defense secretary was "scapegoated by the prime minister". He had received private backing of many backbenchers, sources familiar with the developments say.
The prime minister's office has declined to comment on Edwards' interview.
