Compulsory Military Service

We don't have compulsory military service, and we never have but the idea was mooted during the 2nd World War but it never materialised.

The Crown Republic of Amastol does have a form of Compulsory Government Service, however this is a broader system in which higher education students (College/University) are given free tuition at the National University of their choice in exchange for government service in a civilian or military sector during their enrollment. The job pays both tuition and a room and board stipend that most students find quite generous for their living conditions. Students can apply for a number of entry level government positions usually chosen by the student to fit their degree and gain real world experience in their chosen field. Clerical and Logistics related jobs are popular with business students, where as more technically oriented students often apply for engineering, machining, or electrical internships through ARGUS, which has co-opted with the government to establish such options and provide benefit to all parties involved.

The Military Reserve is an option however and one quite popular with both Male & Female students as Amastol has maintained a stance of armed neutrality for many decades, it is however still a higher risk profession and students are likewise better compensated considering the risk. These jobs are market equivalent to 'part-time' jobs which allows the student adequate time for their studies while filling many necessary but less desirable low level government positions. Job performance is monitored closely and loss of their position does potentially threaten their scholarship, however there are other options and positions that they may be better suited for. A career counselor is generally on hand at any university to assist such students who are having trouble with managing their degree and a job.

This Compulsory Service is only for those who apply for the program (which over 80% of students do) as those who score well enough to earn traditional scholarships or those whose families can afford to send their children to college without the program are not required to join. However because the program provides real world experience most students are better off for being enrolled in the program. Those who choose to enter the reserves can apply for either entry into the Military Branch of their choice full time, or apply directly for Officer Candidate school, as they would already have the four years experience necessary to apply.

In most circumstances, the large size of Saurisia's population ensures that compulsory military service is unnecessary. Of course, the draft is still in place, albeit now it is only to be activated in huge and dire national emergencies like nuclear war.

All koy males are expected to serve 4 years, upon their 18th birthday, in the National State Militia. The huge numbers of the National State Militia forms the reserve for the voluntary Armed Forces - The Koy National Revolutionary Army. Members of the NSM do about 4 months of military activity a year, the remaining 8 months are "uniformed work". Which includes work in factories and farms, assisting the Internal Security Forces with Law Enforcement and Border Patrol, as well as a number of other duties, such as ambulance driving and firefighting.

Yes. All men are required to serve in one branch of the army for three years. Afterwards they will be considered an active reserve for 5 years. If war comes all men can be conscripted.

This changed in 1933 AD, when Selective Service was instated in case of emergencies. All TurtleShroomian citizens are required to submit to Selective Service and, therefore, be eligible for conscription. Conscription has only been used once in TurtleShroomian history, during the Dark Harvest. That was in 2012 AD, when TurtleShroom was invaded.
