Are 8+ hour workdays unreasonable?

My work has a protected Sunday, but we operate 7 days a week. Sunday crew gets paid 1.5X all day.

Way back when I used to work retail jobs as a high schooler, I used to crave working holidays. Extra pay baby.

I volunteer for holidays and sundays, the only downside is that my rent is entirely contingent on my boss caring enough to work me Sunday.

For most office or salary jobs the work day is basically show up at 9, do 2-3 hours worth of work, then spend the next 6-5 hours faffing about or playing games/watching YouTube and pretending to do work because you're not allowed to leave early and it keeps your boss from getting uppity.

Either that, or they're worked to the bone all day and then expected to do more work when they get home and be at their boss' beck and call if they don't stay and do unpaid overtime.

What people should be desiring is that with time comes equivalent pay with reduced hours.

There's no reason to waste people's time with an 8-hour workday across 5 days. I currently favour 8-hour workdays for just 4 days, though there's no reason that can't, and shouldn't, be reduced further over time - with equivalent pay.

But wage labor is pure work from the moment you clock in to the time you leave

No. 8 hours is, theoretically speaking, totally reasonable. If you split a day into three you get 3 x 8. Eight hours of work, eight hours of rest, eight hours of sleep. Makes perfect sense in a 24 hour system.

Speaking as a blue-collar factory worker who works about 8 hours a day I can say from personal experience that while it may be exhausting I don't have a problem with it. It's hard, honest work and my job isn't too difficult or complex. I also work with good, decent people with generally understanding and relaxed bosses.

It's a fucking gold mine to be quite honest: good hours, good work, good bosses, good co-workers, no customers.

The only downside is the pay and benefits suck balls, but that's not important to me right now.

So yeah I have no problem with 8 hour shifts.

Something similar is being debated within the UK's Labour party, I have heard far more favourable qualities of a 4-day workday over a 5-day workday.

Salary work is better because you're in a better position if you're able to bring in lots of money from being so skilled/productive but work less for it. With wage labor, you're limited by how many hours you're able to work. If your boss doesn't give you enough hours you perhaps need another job to take up more of your time and effort and working wage labor for too long- it has an effect of burning you out. The older you get, the less able you'll be to put in tons of hours.

True but I like manual labor. I like the productivity of it. for you as an individual it may be better to have a salary but I think salary jobs don't have the same character as wage labor

I live in a place where poverty is the norm. As I said before, my values are different than a lot of other folks. I of course care about having enough cash to survive but I would rather have a lower paying job that involves a lot of effort than a high paying job that involves none
