True. West Germany had the best Army in Europe in the 80s. It actually had more armored divisions (6) than the US (4).

It being cheap, weak and lazy on defense is a Post Cold War thing. It started in the 90s, not the 40s.

You can thank some ex-Nazis for helping to organize West German Armed Forces.

Man I really need to get more bigoted then...

The last one was actually a satirical piece, but it does remind me of something the fat acceptance crowd would seriously publish in response to the last serious article I produced. I'd recommend lifting weights. You'll burn calories pretty quickly and you'll tone muscles at the same time. You just need a good regimen and diet.

Not really secular, but more of a freedom to choose your religion. Also, the U.S. is kind of based on Christianity, and most of today’s population here are Protestants.

The US has the odd paradox of having a separation of church and state yet it's by far the most theocratic country in the G7.

I'm not in favor of banning fast food restaurants so much as I'm in favor of improving food-related infrastructure and remedying the cultural issues that have led to our over-reliance on fast food. Personally, I'm making a good faith effort to teach my sorority sisters to cook and last semester I got the exec board to make a fitness log to accompany our study log. It's not overly strict, but I do want to encourage our fish to stay healthy so they can experience the health benefits that come with it. It's also a good way to get shyer people to socialize - and I probably need that to be honest.

1. The modern West is heavily reliant on Christian traditions and mores - and, despite retroactive attempts to liberalize Roman social conventions in popular media, the Church may well have liberalized and softened pagan attitudes among the Latins and Germans, the latter most especially.

2. The cultural values that would shape American political culture and society far predate the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Even American secularism, which I do value, has some origins with theologians in New England, who were deeply concerned about the individual's and community's relationship with G-d.

Well true we did have to use former Wehrmacht personnel (as we had no alternative) to help organize it at the beginning. Also the Wehrmacht despite the hideous atrocities did develop an effective combined arms doctrine, that we partially adopted and learned from as well.

Although by the 80s there would be few if any left who had fought for the Wehrmacht.

The funny thing is that West Germany had arguably a better opening in the 80s than the Third Reich did in the 40s.

True. Quite a few of the notables with theists, deists, or even atheists despite most of them at least attending church and keeping up appearances. Thomas Jefferson was a radical by the standards of his time and would likely be seen as a radical in many respects today. He sympathized with the Jacobins after all, and advocated for a bloody revolution every couple decades.

The Pre-Christian West didn't exist. Unless you mean the chaotic mass of Romans, Celts, and Germanic tribes who shared nothing in common.

IIRC in the 1950s they approached Gotthard Heinrici to become Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, but he turned it down because he wanted to more directly mold it into a force like the old Reichswehr and Wehrmacht.

It's something I can't understand, to be honest. I can't see why a Jewish conservative wouldn't prefer to live in Israel rather than in a country which religion is antithetical to theirs. Especially since the Law of Return guarantees citizenship.

One thing that occasionally strikes me about this thread is how frustratingly middle-class everyone seems to be.
"Classicist in literature, royalist in politics, and Anglo-Catholic in religion" (T.S. Eliot).
"Be just, and fear not.
Let all the ends thou aim'st at be thy country's,
Thy God's and truth's."
- 'Henry VIII' (1613) act 3, sc. 2, l. 441, William Shakespeare

I mean of course though. I doubt a a site and discussions such as this have much appeal outside the middle class, which has been the most politically and intellectually inclined, at least for the last century or so.

Same with Heinrici, but the difference was they were offering him the top spot which offered a direct chance to mold the coming West German forces; one thing, and admittedly this is only cosmetic, is that he wanted to keep Gott Mit Uns as official in the new force.
