It also doesn't make sense for Aschenputtel to be called Cinderella in English.

In that case, I wonder if those people were also upset by the live action versions of popular animated Disney movies.

NO WAY
This is unacceptable
They're based on Scandinavian legends/a Danish author's works... it would make NO SENSE for her to be non-white

Considering that mermaids are mythological creatures, what makes sense is entirely up to the writer of the story.
Anne Rice twisted everything people knew about vampires in her books. And why? Because they're mythological and she can reshape them as fits her universe -- as long as she has an explanation.
The ethnicity of merfolk is immaterial.

its a hugely problematic issue sitting with me
I'm extremely bothered by it

That... actually makes sense. I’ve never thought about it that way.
And, I mean, Disney’s had Ariel as a white-skinned character for 30 years. Why change it now? It’s going to be more apparent a change than no change.

It’s not like they could change it. They were stuck in profoundly racist America for most of their existence.

Why is it so desperately important to you what a fictional species -- that never existed -- looks like?
Not like Ariel's a historical character. Unlike, well... Joseph Fiennes (an excellent actor, but still...) playing Michael Jackson in an unaired episode of Urban Myths springs to mind

Would you consider ditching Disney altogether over this?Bluelight-R006 wrote:That... actually makes sense. I’ve never thought about it that way.

Virtue signalling.

I guess honestly this sort of stuff is effectively a difficult situation, since in most people’s perspective, there’s no real good reason to change it. So people believe that the only reason they’d do so is an as an attempt to promote diversity and such, and changing classic things for that reason really annoys some people. It can also be seen as a form of desecration in the eyes of some. That’s how I see it anyway. I guess I’m too apathetic to care all too much but my general position is that there’s not usually a good reason for doing stuff like that, even if it doesn’t matter all too much.

I watched Aladdin. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think anyone was upset. From reviews, everyone was surprised it was such a good remake. And comparing it to the old animated movie, the skin colours didn’t change.Infected Mushroom wrote:

Wow the Aladdin remake did good? Thought it would be bad since people would be more use to the Robin Williams Genie and not the Will Smith one.

Nah... people liked it a lot. It wasn’t as good as the original, but it was still quite good. I think both genies were good, too.

Well good for Disney then if the Aladdin remake was good I wonder if the Lion King remake would be better I wonder.
From past records (reviews), Disney remakes haven’t had a clear, or at least vague, strike of good reviews. Aladdin was exceptional, which would explain why many was expecting a bad remake.
