NICAEA—A large group, of what may have been thousands of participants, held an enormous LGBT pride parade in the industrial city of Nicaea. It is believed to be the largest demonstration of LGBT rights in the Empire's known history.
Participants began marching and celebrating LGBT identity while simultaneously protesting the record of LGBT Rights in the Romalean Empire. Some radicals demanded its equal recognition in marriage, while others simply wanted to cease harsh punishments by the Romalean state against homosexuality.
Background
The Eastern Romalean Empire has an extremely poor record with LGBTQ+ rights. Homosexual activity is punished under sodomy laws. Engaging in sodomy is typically punishable by imprisonment and forced rehabilitation. Active activism for LGBTQ+ rights include harsher punishments, including the death penalty in some circumstances. Fines are given out to any promotion of "sodomite ideology." The general public reinforces the stigma against LGBTQ+ people. Meanwhile, the Eastern Catholic Church has condemned LGBTQ+ rights and has encouraged queer people to remain celibate or seek treatment.
Undercover gay rights organizations used local activists to press for the city of Nicaea to allow for a peaceful pride parade and protest. The city's officials constantly denied them a permit; officials from Constantinople banished several people out of the country who were accused of being involved.
The Rally
Despite being forbidden by local and imperial authority, a the parade was launched anyways in response to the execution of 5 LGBT rights activists.
On June 20th, 4:00PM, demonstrators began marching on the streets. Rainbow flags were waved, signs were held up, and demonstrations were shown. Critics claimed that there was an excessive amount of obscenity and the "flaunting of sodomy," which was dangerous to the children who saw the parade. They also claimed children were also in the parade and had seen these acts of obscenity.
Regardless, the demonstration was quickly met with violence. Participants of the Nicaea pride parade were met with flying eggs, stones, tomatoes, and slurs. After rocks were thrown by the activists in response to a molotov cocktail thrown in the rally, a nationalist mob ran to attack. The rally quickly descended into violence. Cries ranging from "SODOMY IS A DEADLY SIN" to "SODOMITES ARE CHILD RAPISTS" among other homophobic phrases echoed the rioters. As several people tried to leave through buses and trolleys that they arrived in, rocks and bullets cracked through the windows. Molotov cocktails, firecrackers, rocks, and other projectiles were thrown to the activists. Many activists were brutally beaten up by the angry mob.
The mayor of Nicaea sent the police "to keep order," though the police reportedly went against the activists and joined the mob. Unconfirmed reports stated that injured activists were "denied or given poor medical treatment."
Several activists and organizers of the rally were arrested under several criminal charges. Nobody towards the other side was reported to face any criminal charges.
"I can't believe this," cries gay rights' activist Justina Gregora. "We knew that Romaleus has had a poor track record of LGBTQ+ rights, but we didn't think they would go this far. The people have violently struck down our rally, all for the crime of showing who we are. The mayor sent policemen and called it a day, ignoring that the police went against us too. We had nobody to protect us but ourselves. This is a horrible, bigoted, and shameful disgrace to the nation. The condition and treatment of queer people is worse than we thought it was. They do their best to dehumanize us and claim that gays are not people, but beasts of a burden. The international community must do something about this horrible abuse of human rights!"
