Unrest in Khataiy (MT-Open)

Postby Khataiy » Fri Apr 19, 2019 12:40 pm

OOC: No massive wars, invasions or anything unusual for an event like this, please try to be as realistic as possible.

Abu Jamal Neighborhood, Southern Antakya, Khataiy

Opposition protestors

Massive protests have begun in the Khataiyi capital of Antakya, in the southern suburbs with Abu Jamal seeing the largest protests, the neighborhood had a historically large Turkish population and had been a Kemalist hotbed prior to the fall of the Ottoman Empire, after its fall the area also became renowned for a progressive population influenced by the French during their control during the 1930s and 1940s, during this time it was common to see Arabs inter-marrying with the French, after the war when Khataiy gained independence the area retained its liberalism and became a stronghold for the pro-western government.

The area remains largely populated with ethnic Turks, former Government officials that had worked for the pro-western government and liberals, the area was popular with many young people in Khataiy as well as youths from around the Middle East and western tourists. Protestors began protests in the neighborhood calling for the resignation of President Omar Khairallah.

Protestors have become inspired by recent protests in Algeria and Sudan and are calling for reforms to the constitution, liberalization, the end of Arabist policies, and re-westernization. Protestors have begun waving the pre-revolutionary flag. Among the calls for Khairallah's resignation many in the opposition claim he has no right to rule in Khataiy as his grandparents and parents originate from Iraq and Syria.

One protestor a young student from the nearby Antakya University told journalists, "He isn't a Khataiyi his grandfather came from Iraq and his father from Syria, they came here illegally to live in this country and now the rule it? Khataiy is a diverse country with a unique history, I hardly even consider myself an Arab, I am Khataiyi before I am Arab, whereas Khairallah he is Arab and Arab only he is not compatible with our country."

In addition to calls for Khairallah's resignation, and reformd the opposition has also called for increased relations with the European Union along with distancing from the Arab and greater Islamic world. Another protestor told journalists "Khairallah has insane policies that target minorities, and anyone he feels needs to be targeted even if they hurt no one, it is 2019 and Khataiy still executes homosexuals and people who leave Islam, I am a Muslim but if you do not believe in my religion I have no problem with you, we are all Khataiyis and we should be united, I think it is also extremely backwards how Marijuana for medical use is likewise punished with death, everything can get you killed here, I only ask Allah to protect me after speaking with you, I don't want the police or Munafidhi or something coming after me."

The office of President Khairallah released a statement addressing the unrest,

The political situation in regards to the current protests are the result of foreign instigated agitation to undermine the stability and unity of the Arab State of Khataiy. Any instances of civil unrest are being handled by the proper authorities to ensure the safety of the public remains intact, our nation recognizes the right of the people to freely assemble and protest against the current government, however any unlawful acts during such protests are subject to a response both legally and physically.

From the office of the Presidency of the Arab State of Khataiy
Signed,
President Omar Khairallah al-Annazah

Antakya, Khataiy

Image
Patriarch Mikhail Abdullah speaking about the recent protests

Patriarch Abdullah has been considered a powerful voice in Khataiy for Christians escpecially Arab ones and has been an influential individual for Middle Eastern Christians and has become an ideologue an promoting Arab Nationalism and Islamic-Christian friendship and has promoted his own strain of Arab Nationalism that has been claimed by many as "Pan-Semitic Nationalism", as he as critcized many self-proclaimed Christian movements such as Assyrian Nationalists in parts of Iraq, Syria and Khataiy as well as the Maronite movement in Lebanon that promotes Phonecian identity and the Coptic Nationalists in Egypt who renounce Egypt's Arab identity. He has also called for Arab Nations to develop a different approach with Israel claiming in a speech "The Children of Abraham must unite against our common foes."

He has been a staunch supporter of the Khataiyi government and has decided to address the protestors and Christian minorities who oppose the government,

"In the name of Allah, these protests we are witnessing are disappointing, when I see the Christian youth supporting this I ask where did we go wrong and why is God punishing us. I would like to first say there is no shame in Arab identity, you should be proud to be a child of Ismail a child of our beloved Abraham, this seperation is what the westerners want, this is what the imperialists want, they want our Hebrew brothers killing us Arabs and now they want Assyrians to slaughter Arabs with their Kurdish gypsie allies, and now they want Arabs to kill one another. They want the tribes of Israel disunited in their plot against God's will, they want to trample on the gospel they want us to throw away our faith. They will not be happy until our nations are humiliated and enslaved, they want our daughters to be prostitutes and our sons homosexuals, and our leaders to be Atheist Communists, they are the servants of Satan.

Do not be a pawn in their plot proud sons of Khataiy, Khataiy will remain proud and strong, and I say witj great pride God is the Greatest."

Northeast Khataiy

Image
Pro-SSNP protests

The Syrian Social Nationalist Party had been banned in Khataiy since the country's foundation however did enjoy greater freedoms in the late 1960s to the mid 1970s, the party had been rivialed by Pan-Arab movements and to a lesser extent Christian nationalists from the Assyrian, Armenian and Greek communities as well as by Turkish nationalists. However in recent years the party's popularity has risen among Christians seeing it as an alternative to the Arab Nationalist government, many Shias have also become drawn to the party given the Sunni domination in the current leadership of the country, the party has also recieved extenssive support from the Syrian government many Khataiyi SSNP members have also crossed into Syria to assist pro-Assad forces combat Khataiyi backed rebels and recieve training and a base of operations.

The party also took part in an attempted revolt last year along with military defectors, Ghaddafists, and Hezbollah linked fighters against the Khataiyi government resulting in a Russian and WA mediated cease-fire and limited autonomy to the rebels in the northeast in their stronghold of Kurk Murzban with many defectors reconciling with the government and the return of limited control to Kurk Murzban with local institutions acting as neutral parties in governance with neither the Khataiyi government or any rebel party having an official presence.

Despite all of this thr SSNP remains a banned party as its ideology fundamentally challenges the principles of Khataiyi government and its ruling coalition the National Front. The party's violant history and collaberation with foreign govrrnments namely Ghaddafi era Libya and Syria as well as alleged dealings with the CIA have caused the party to come under more scrutiny by the government, even going as far as executing 13 individuals allegedly part of an insurgent group linked to the SSNP in 1998.

Though the party has been treated harshly this still hasn't stopped support for the party in the form of rallies, protests and on social media with the government taking little action against it with the theory of controlled chaos, as drastic action could further polarize the country and push destabilization and prompt a response from the SSNP and other opposition parties.

The growing anti-Arabist sentiment could push these parties together forming a strong opposition coalition against the government.

STATEMENT FROM THE KHATAIYI RESISTANCE

Because of the lack of action or interest in reform or democracy on behalf of the Khairallah regime the political opposition announces the establishment of the Khataiyi Resistance to represent the needs of the people. We seek to establish a political front for change and reform to the constitution and free elections, and the legalization of all political parties and to represent the true feelings of Khataiy's people.

We welcome all citizens of our country to join the movement, and wish for the government to come and meet with us to find a solution to the crisis, we reject violence, terrorism, and racism we support democracy, secularism, and a multi-ethnic state. Our party also rejects sectarianism, but we demand our party be recognized by the Khataiyi Revolutionary Command Council, the Executive Committee and the National Shura Council, we also ask that the international community to support our calls for free democracy for Khataiy and freedom from racism and sectarianism.

The current signatory parties are as follows,

-The Syrian Social Nationalist Party
-The Democratic Arab Socialist Baath Party
-The National Democratic Committee
-The Democratic Kurdish Worker's Party
-The National Syriac Movement

Supporters of the Khataiyi government

The Popular Union a large pro-government organization consisting over several business owners, industrialists, religious leaders, tribal leaders and educators, held a televised event at an event center in the capital in solidarity with the government, the event showed prominent individuals giving support to President Khairallah, at the center flags of Palestine, the Free Syrian Army, Saddam era-Iraq and Khataiy all flew side by side, and as the show started a large traditional Arab dance was done with a poetic song being recited with nationalist lyrics saying,

"We are sons of Khataiy
May Allah damn the Safavids
Khairallah is our President
We are Arabs and we are Muslims

May God shut up the fools
Oh babbling monkeys we are lions
This is our house you are wrong
The curse of God be upon the traitors

Oh slaves of the party of Satan
We will ruin you
Oh Masonic dogs
You will be rubble under our feet

Do not bother fighting
For you will die
Our knives are sharpened and arms are loaded
Oh traitors you are miserable feigns

We are free
You are dumb
You are filthy pigs
Die in your rage
This is our land
Khairallah is our President
Khataiy is our land
We are its sons
And you shall burn

God is the Greatest!"

After the performance the host of the show spoke, "Beautiful, thank you brothers, thank you everyone for coming to celebrate our nation, we welcome the heads of Khataiy's greatest businesses, the knowledgeable Sheikhs and Imams and the honorable tribesmen to Antakya to advise our young people who are protesting, Mr.Obaidi you would like to speak?" Mr.Obaidi is the owner of a chain of movie theaters in the country with theaters also operating in Saudi Arabia, Libya, Lebanon, Bahrain and Jordan known for providing a luxury experience and fine dining during the film, "Yes thank you, I thank everyone for showing up today and I thank the Antakya event center for proving us with a space to hold this meeting. I would like to speak about these protests, I normally don't like to discuss politics but I think its necessary to discuss this now before it becomes out of control.

I was a child during the revolution and I grew up in its aftermath, I lived for a good time of my life in Egypt because the situation here was unbearable with the rebuilding process and the hijackers, and the Syrians trying to invade our country and after we lived in Egypt we moved to Europe and I remained until I was in college, and studied finance and got my degree thanks be to God. But I came back to Khataiy afterwards to be reunited with my other family members and I can say what we saw back in the 1980s and 1990s is not the same as what we see today, what we see today is a prospering nation, I was able to start my business in the year 2004 a year after returning to Khataiy and I can say without President Khairallah it would not be an international success, we have locations across the Arab world and Khataiy.

I met President Khairallah in 2006 after opening our first location outside of Khataiy in Saudi Arabia, and he congratulated our business and helped us to expand elsewhere and has been a patron of our business reminder us of his support for Khataiyi businesses and supporting people who start from nothing to being successes, I stand with President Khairallah."

After he spoke the host said, "Thank you Mr.Obaidi." And another speaker spoke and the show continued on for 2 hours.

Watching events unfold in Khataiy, Gebeta took a keen interest.
Is a nation willing to change? Stuck in old ways yet with new ideas? How does one influence without making it clear?

Special Forces was ruled out. It was too risky. A faulty mission and those willing see it as a western nation trying to influence them. Direct Action? Same. Gebetan warplanes dropping bombs on targets, the occasional faulty targeting system would be worse.

A fleet of warships off nearby in international waters would be the best.

Orders were sent to the GBS Grey Ghost, a carrier of 90 aircraft, plus its escorts of 16 ships, quietly informing the fleet of its next task.

They would sail off in international waters, standing by to intervene if needed. They would also be a tool to use diplomatically. The big stick.

The Grey Ghost, however, had to transition into position over the course of several days.
When that time came around, an official letter of intent would be sent.

OOC
Will post an intent message when my fleet arrives in a few posts of others. Fleet won't engage in combat. Could be used by you as a sign of western powers trying to intervene.

Official statement of the Foreign Ministry on the unrest in Khataiy

The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Sefardia expresses its support for demonstrators calling for the termination of the Omar Khairallah regime. Reforms to the constitution, liberalization, the end of Arabist policies, and re-westernization would allow Khataiy to emerge as a reformed nation with closer contacts to and therefore influence in the international community, which would open up many economic opportunities to the state and its people. Embracing a new, collective civic nationalist identity as a nation would sooth what appears to be longstanding ethnic and/or sectarian tensions in the country. The Foreign Ministry sincerely believes that until these reforms are made, Khataiy will continue to be regarded by many as an oppressive pariah state baring no legitimacy or value under the Omar Khairallah regime. However, the Foreign Ministry places the utmost urgency on stressing that any transition of power must be conducted in a peaceful and democratic manner, and handled solely by the people of Khataiy, free of foreign interference and influence. For that reason we condemn the militaristic and intimidating posture of Gebeta and stand with all elements of Khataiy in resisting the apparent attempt at gunboat diplomacy. A military response to peaceful protests calling for the implementation of a new democratic order should never be tolerated by Khataiy of the international community and the Republic of Sefardia stands ready to support Khataiy and its institutions in transitioning power peacefully. Sefardia acts with genuine interests and not to belittle Khataiy.

Statement from the Office of the President on the Protests in Khataiy

The Royal Republic of Bruke commends the Khataiyi people for striving to change their country for the better, and calls upon all stakeholders to engage in peaceful dialogue and avoid violence.

The government and the Khataiyi Resistance should immediately enter into talks to establish a multi-party democracy where all political movements can participate in free and fair elections, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

All Brukean citizens present in the country are advised to stay away from areas where demonstrations are occurring.

If assistance is necessary, contact the Honorary Consulate General, located in Antakya.

For Bruke, the protests in Khataiy presented a choice: involvement vs. non-involvement.

The rationale for involvement was relatively straightforward- but then again, so was the rationale for non-involvement.

With a plurality of religious adherents adhering to Oriental Orthodoxy and pilgrims regularly heading to the Middle East, Brukeans could be in the crossfire of violence not just in Khataiy but in neighboring countries. On a similar note, the Brukean Orthodox Tewahedo Church had planned to hold worship services at the Church of Saint Peter but had stopped those plans once protests had started. Just as concerning to the Church was the apparent politicization of its sister church in Khataiy. Patriarch Abdullah of the Syriac Orthodox Church may have called for unity between Christians, Jews, and Muslims -along the lines of what had become the political and socio-economic status quo in the Royal Republic after the 1935 Constitution- but it was in the service of an authoritarian regime.

On the other hand, there were consequences to taking action. Khataiy seemed to be pro-Israel -relatively speaking- and there was a desire not to deprive the Jewish state of a potential ally, especially following the Asian intervention and the Treaty of Jerusalem. The saying of “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” would dictate supporting the Khairallah regime, as it supported anti-Assad forces in Syria. Of course, there was just as much pressure the other way, as Khataiy had a history of being anti-American in rhetoric and in policy. There was no way of knowing for sure whether or not the opposition would be any more supportive of the interests of Bruke and its allies in the region. Brukean Muslims were evenly divided between supporting the regime out of anti-Assad sentiments or supporting the opposition in order to promote democracy in the country.

With so much at stake, a middle path was seen as best, limiting involvement to diplomacy only- at least for now.

Pro-Government Counter Protestors

Protests were slowly decreasing in numbers, the Khataiyi government partially gave some rights to the "Khataiyi Resistance" political bloc however there still could be no common ground found on multiple issues, and after a failed discussion yesterday between government officials and opposition representatives a large demonstration was staged, the SSNP played a major role in the protests in response several government loyalists came out to the streets to counter-protest, the counter-protestors carried Khataiyi banners, posters of Khairallah and Saddam Hussein, as well as large banners with pro-government writing on them. As they protested several loud speakers were set up playing patriotic music in cars and on the sidewalks. Most of the counter-protestors were young men from lower income backgrounds a quarter of them also had criminal records including for violent crimes, some also allegedly belong to gangs and tribes that are linked to the Khataiyi government.

As the counter-protestors came into contact with opposition protestors, they became increasingly violent throwing rocks and molotovs at the opposition, one government supporter wearing a Keffiyah around his head light a molotov and yelled "Allahu Akbar!" before throwing it, other protestors burned makeshift flags of the Khataiyi Resistance, Syria, Iran and the SSNP. By nightfall the protestors stormed a building affiliated with the opposition and burned it down and seized computers, cash and other property from the building several cars parked outside were also smashed and vandalized.

Several buildings were also vandalized nearby, protestors also sprayed pro-government graffiti like "Khataiy for Khataiyis", "Allah, Khataiy, Omar is all we want" and "Khataiy is Remaining". During the protests police allegedly allowed the pro-government protestors to have the advantage and push back opposition supporters as well as vandalized and burn down the opposition's headquarters, one opposition protestor who was a young man who recently graduated university with a degree in economics was beaten to death by government supporters, medical aid was allegedly denied to him by government authorities, who dispersed opposition protestors with tear gas and firing bullets in the air.

The incident prompted a response from the Khataiyi Resistance

STATEMENT FROM THE KHATAIYI RESISTANCE

The violence we have witnessed today by supporters of the Khairallah regime is beyond description in terms of brutality. The lack of intervention by the government is also of major concern and shows the lack of commitment to change on behalf of the regime, we also believe many of these supposed protestors were in fact prisoners released specifically to support the government, and they belong to gangs directly affiliated with the regime. We demand action be taken by the government and we demand a right to protection and freedom of speech that is guaranteed by the government free from state or non-state harassment, and we demand support from the international community.
