Bertrand de Feydeau, from the preservation group Fondation du Patrimoine, said the wooden roof was built with beams from primal forests more than 800 years ago. “We don’t, at the moment, have trees on our territory of the size that were cut in the 13th century,” he said. So the roof may never be built exactly the same, it will always carry the mark of this era and will have to use modern technology.

Besides, finding this kind of old-growth forest AND cutting down those trees would be inconvenient.

I'm sure the half billion or so Euros being thrown at reconstruction will solve it all.

Really though, they can just make the roof out of metal.

You won't be able to see it from under the stone vault anyway. And it burns much slower.

Not bad. Though a metal roof sagging and falling in case of a fire could be even more destructive but it’s not a terrible idea.

I don't know if it would be. In most cases steel scaffolding weighs less then wooden scaffolding when supporting a similar structure. Because you need less of it.

In terms of lasting, a well made metal roof that mimics the disappeared “forest” roof isn’t a bad idea though.

Plot Twist: Notre-Dame Cathedral turns into a masjid. That'd actually be pretty cool imo but we'd need Catholic consent

What about Satanists?

There have been multiple church fires in France lately that have in fact been linked to anti-theists. Perhaps some are Satanists ?

It could also just be a few people who were raped in the Cathedral when they were kids and have decided they now want revenge, closure and desruction of the place of their suffering. Downside of that one would be it would become harder to condemn; so I doubt this conspiracy theoruu will be popular.

Or it could be the start of a Netflix campaign to destroy sites that feature prominently in Disney movies due to the upcoming Disney+ competion.
Next target: the little mermaid statue in Denmark.

I'd guess it was faulty electrics, the whole place was in dire need of renovation anyway. Either faulty electrics or some lazy contractor dropping a cigarette into renovation debris.

The cathedral is owned by the state and has been at the centre of a years-long dispute between the nation and the Paris archdiocese over who should finance restoration work to collapsed balustrades, crumbling gargoyles and cracked facades.

Jean-Michel Leniaud, the president of the scientific council at the National Heritage Institute, said: “What happened was bound to happen. The lack of real upkeep and daily attention to such a major building is the cause of this catastrophe.”

If so then someone is not sleeping very well these few days. Knowing the world these days it would turn out to be some immigrant contractor from a Muslim country and another kind of fire will break out.

Steel is also less likely to collapse in the first place since it can better withstand the heat of a fire. And if it does collapse, it won't matter how much the falling debris weighs because you're probably already lost the entire building.

Hey! How was your return flight?

I was happy about the window as well. I thought much of the glass work would have been lost. The roof is kind of sad. Some of it was part of the first build.
