It's an American cultural myth. Even in America, the only cause that would unite enough militia LARPers against the gubbermint to pose even a minor threat would be taking away the guns, and if violence ensued it'd probably be seen as terrorism and cause as many to rise in favour of the government as against it, and if they pushed their luck too far they would be completely destroyed by disciplined professionals with the latest technology.

More widely, where such a culture doesn't exist, not enough people will believe it virtuous for it to make good guys with guns a thing, so it'd just mostly help potential criminals arm themselves.

For a myth it's not necessarily a harmful one, exceptionalism around a self-conception as an oasis of freedom is quite a nifty collective self-image that's more resistant than most national myths against being diluted by multiculturalism, globalism etc, but it's not something that can be universalised to other parts of the world that don't have that culture. You do you, it's not for us.

Certainly not, but a ban on gun ownership is a likely indicator of the reverse.

Can't see it. Many societies are quite free with quite strict restrictions on gun ownership, and I don't think one can say that they'd necessarily have developed in a more "libertarian" direction (whether that's good or bad is a moot point) if people had guns. Cultures and histories differ more than in this one regard and it's surely reductionist to put too much emphasis on this one point.

For a civilian to be denied access to firearms, that would mean the only people legally allowed to own firearms would be agents of the state. This means that people are heavily disimpowered should they try to form a protest or rebellion, severely diminishing motivation for the state not to be corrupt or authoritarian.

You seriously believe that a rag-tag group of armed civilians stand any chance of overthrowing an authoritarian government that has the support of a modern military?

Besides, armed rebellion against lawful authority is sinful.

When engaging in unconventional warfare, I don't think the point of rebelling is to directly engage in and overthrow the government. I think it is more about hurting the wallets of those in power, and forcing them to pull out. That is why the American Revolution succeed, George Washington didn't destroy the entire British army, he simply made it too costly to continue British occupation. The same with Vietnam. Afghanistan etc. etc.

also "lawful authority" is kinda of BS. just because it is law doesn't inherently mean it is righteous. Most of the time the government is in fact good and for the benefit of the population, but when the government is outright oppressing its people without a sane reason...... then yeah, it is not it chief. (see Nazi Germany)

Of course any armed rebellion due to idiotic reasons shouldn't happen. But then again I don't think any sizable group really wants an armed rebellion for stupid ideas. Personally I think each rebellion should be case by case, studied to see if it was justified.

I think any armed rebellion should follow the steps put down by Martin Luther King Jr. for non-violent protest first and then consider rebelling.

First identify the problem that a large subset of the population is suffering from, then attempt to engage in civil discussion with the government for a peaceful solution (If that is impossible, might want to rebel.) , then if that fails engage in non violent protest to create pressure and support for the cause. Then if that REPEATEDLY fails multiple times with only more and more oppressive and authoritarian laws being pushed. Then armed rebellion becomes an option. I would reason that most people would consider the resistance forces against Nazi Germany as reasonable and righteous. And if they had guns for the get go, they probably would have had a bigger impact on the war.

It would definitely vary by culture, yes. Still, most liberal democracies, AFAIK, don't completely prohibit guns for the civilian population. Maybe I was being overly weaselly, suggesting that an armed populace naturally makes governments more hesitant to be authoritarian.

People take two extremes on this issue. Can a few loosely organised militias take down the US government? No, not a bloody chance. Though it would be deeply amusing to see all the overweight yank gun nuts with their confederate flags get pulped in to pink slurry. But equally some of the more sophisticated ones could probably cause local governments sufficient problems that not pissing off thousands of armed citizens would be a prudent course to follow. If said militias have two braincells to rub together they won't engage conventional forces in symmetrical warfare, but would instead seek to disrupt lines of communication, assassinate officers and make the wilderness no go zones, and maybe some towns too. But many said people due to centuries of inbreeding will not be so astute.

If, post-apocalypse, RWDTers were to found political states similar to how Caesar created the Legion in New Vegas:

New New England: one of the few monarchical states who's founder did not make himself ruler. the throne instead occupied by a distant relation of the House of Windsor. The aesthetic is 19th century Victorian and the reconstructed Anglican Church is known for long beautiful services. The regency of the first prime minister, Old Tyrannia, is regarded as a golden age of culture.

Anarcho-Tsarist Ozarks: a voluntary association of primitive agrarian communes united under a single Tsar who rules in the name of Christ but does not act. The philosophy of a bearded man named Muscovite Nations is doctrine. The means of production are communally owned by the farmers who work the land, and technology is regarded as a tool of the Devil to enslave men's souls. Because of this stigmata against modernity, the farmers are often prey to raiders with more advanced weaponry, which lead to militant farmer defense leagues.

Fascist Virginia: a band of raiders broken and reformed into a totalistic militarist state under the dictatorship of one known as Oil Exporting Peoples. The aesthetic is a mixture of Confederate, Kaiserreich, and Roman. It despises weakness and enforces total discipline, with summary execution for those who are found guilty of breaching the rules. The number of conscripts who survive training are relatively low. It's currently at war with Maryland and its proxy state West Virginia, which Fascist Virginia wants to become a part of Virginia again.

Constitutional Legitimist Maryland: a state which claims to be the rightful heir of the United States of America and strictly enforces the constitution there. Lead by Conserative Morality, the Marylanders refer to anyone outside their territory as "filthy secessh" and shoot on sight unless you want to be an immigrant. There is a national civic religion which rewrites the Bible to worship America as an idea and the Founding Fathers as gods, with references to the Devil being replaced with the names of Civil War Confederate leaders and generals.

The Warrior Nuns of Louisiana: lead by Luminesa, these nuns terrify the South with motorcycles and yardsticks which they are not afraid to hit people with. Some say that those who are unfortunate are carried off by the nuns to a fate worse than death: Catholic boarding school.

Socdem Gang: a small regional state in northern Florida founded by three figures known as the New Founding Fathers (Genivaria, West Vale Confederacy, and Dumb Ideologies). The state has a small but active senate and follows a social democratic model with some syndicalist features built in, with a President who theoretically has near-absolute power.

Militarist League of Alabama-Georgia: formed by Washington Resistance Army and Fahran to protect people from the bands of warrior nuns abducting people, the Militarists are... fond of weaponry to put it mildly. The right to bear arms is the highest held right, and a social conservative regime is in place.

Sounds exquisite. Here's another one:

North California Monastic State: A pseudo-theocratic state protected and governed by an order of militant Buddhist warrior-monks and nuns, whose abbess claims to rule as regent for the Emperor of Japan. The lay people enjoy secure lives and healthy vegetarian diets on communal farms under the protection of the order, whilst missionaries and would-be raiders are crucified on the borders as a warning to others. The court of the abbess-princess is well known for its promotion of traditional Japanese culture and philosophy.

Furthermore, I think that these newfangled fire-arms are overrated and that people ought to go back to using bows and arrows or swords.

I think having it so that the only people who may legally own a firearm are agents of the government could make corruption and authoritarianism a lot easier to happen.

And they have to an trained in using it, like how you're trained in driving a car before using it.

You seriously believe that a rag-tag group of armed civilians stand any chance of overthrowing an authoritarian government that has the support of a modern military?

It was part of the Second Anglo-French Hundred Years War, one in which armed bands of American militia served mostly to harass and obstruct the progress of the British Army but could not conclusively inflict actual significant casualties on them. As evidenced by the 1812 affair in which a British Empire with both arms tied behind its back by Napoleon wrecked their way through the most important city of then United States, against the very same militia. Had the United States of 1812 not been helped by Napoleon's grand invasion of Russia and the refocusing of British attention there it would've gone the way like the Swiss did a decade earlier to a French host of merely 12,000 men.

Well they wrecked the poorly trained militia but the US did have regular military units in 1812 which fought quite well. Just did not have any defending DC at the time.

And DC was not the most important city in America at the time.
Even though it was officially the the capital.

But your are correct, rag tag militia with small arms can only be used in harassment and guerilla type operations. They are pretty useless against regular troops in open combat.

Besides, armed rebellion against lawful authority is sinful.

I seem to remember the UK losing most of Ireland in the 1920's and having itself severely hampered and forced into a peace agreement mainly to a ragtag group of armed civilians. Also most of the Afghans fighting Elphinstone's army would have been equivalent to a militia. I seem to remember them massacring the British and keeping them out of Afghanistan for quite some time.

Irregular forces are meant to hamper the enemy and make it more costly than it could. Also the Soviet partisans were not in full force in 1941, given that it had only been a few months. The Red Army usually however coordinated its offensives with partisan groups and considered them instrumental in the war. When used appropriately, irregular forces can and have crippled armies.

One of the primary reasons American forces in Iraq were successful after the purge was due to their alliance with a large number of Sunni tribes and their militias. Said militias played a pivotal role in reducing violence as they worked in tandem with US forces to hunt down and kill al-Qaeda operatives and other, more extremist, groups and militias. If it hadn't been for the Sons of Iraq, American forces quite likely would not have been as successful in quelling violence.

I mean they work if you have a hell of a lot of numbers or some outside support. The NVA was more successful than the Vietnam Cong, and I would say regular forces are generally better than irregular forces. Most irregular forces that win by themselves are very popular.
