How could saying "you" be considered offensive?

Maybe it works like Spanish. "Tú" and "usted" both mean "you" but the latter is a more respectful way to say it. Maybe it works the same in Japanese, or similar. Idk, I don't speak Japanese.

Kimi/anata, I believe, kimi being more familiar.

But absolutely nobody says “usted” except to very old people or by veery old people.

In Spain, usted and ustedes are the most antiquated words still used by the RAE. In Lati America, it’s a bit more diverse. It’s falling out of common parlance, but it’s not completely gone yet, at least in Mexico. Central America uses it more, and I don’t know about South America proper.

In Japanese, “anata” (most common form of you) is rather blunt and informal. While that seems impractical, bear in mind that it's a lot easier to omit having to use the word than in English. There's other forms as well (kimi, omae, etc.) which you absolutely should not use in any context outside of someone you know really well. Kimi is something you'd call your close friends and not a stranger. The latter would be like if someone you've never even met came up to you and started acting like you knew each other.

OK, which decade do you all hate the most?

I can guess that everybody here dislikes the 1970s, even though I don't look at the decade as extremely bad (The 30s were worse)

The decades which I despise the most was the 1940s, 1910s and the 1300s with the Bubonic Plague

The 1910s and 1940s were bad enough Internationally. For my own country, the first half of the 1920s were as bad as the 1910s. (We had a famine, half the country tried to secede, etc. etc.)

Obviously the 70s sucked. Their only redeeming factor is some good rock music.
I also generally dislike the 90s.

But that is more recent.

Obviously many other periods (30s, late 1850s early 1860s and most of the 1600s) were worse.
1600s had a cool aesthetic but actually living it not so much.

It does vary from place to place. 1600s were the height of Swedish power for example but sucked for most places.

The 1970s was a bad period for Americans, mainly due to the defeat in Saigon, economic recession and a withering trust towards Washington DC after the Watergate scandal. I dare to speculate that the disastrous 70s is the reason why the conservative movement managed to grow, with Reagan in 1980.

I usually consider the 1970s to be a cluster**** decade, since a lot of countries were on the verge of civil war, mainly Argentina, Turkey, Thailand and Italy. But I do love the jazz funk and rock music from the 70s. In fact some of the 70s aesthetics is nice.

I do not know why the 90s nowadays is glorified by our contemporary society. Today, childish millennials is circlejerking around the 1990s and 90s nostalgia is turning profitable. But that was the decade when optimism and growth was at the top

In many cultures saying "you" informally to someone you don't know is considered offensive, and in others (like Slavic) bad-mannered.

Guatemalans seem to employ usted a bit more than Mexican or Spaniards in my experience, but it's definitely declining in a lot of places. I probably overuse it a bit in more formal settings and it's gotten me some weird looks, but I've found that using the less formal can get me weird looks too, at least with Central Americans. Needless to say, my social anxiety truly awakens when I go full Latina.

I get that perspective, but I'm not certain we can avoid the freeze peach issue without an amendment that really restricts and narrows the scope of the 1st Amendment.
