Soccer. We have an expansive amateur league system which sees huge participation and also attracts large crowds, and our national team is able to punch well above its weight in international competition. Many of our very best players move abroad, and in fact are a major source of foreign currency as they send hundreds of millions (in various foreign currencies - Columbian Dollars, Anglish Pounds, Rhomanian Lira etc) of International Dollars into the country each year.

The people of Fishy Apples have long have a history in enjoying the thrill of the race, first in swim meets in pre-historic times, then as our more of our majority mermaid populace began interact more with land-dwellers during the dawn of civilization began to race by boat, and as we began to live more on the land and even in the deserts and mountains, developing special saddles for mermaids, racing by horse and camel across the dunes.
With magic and technology advancing further, eventually automobiles and motorcycles reached Fishy Apples in the 1870's (thanks in part to our advanced technological neighbor The Onigiri Enclave), and we got the need for speed. Race tracks, racing events, and off-road courses began to spring up, with it all culminating with the McIntosh Cup, a NASCAR-like racing series set mostly on pentagon or octogon-shaped tracked, some running left, some running right, with a few road coursed mixed in (and no one complains about the road courses either [they think they're a breath of fresh air when they appear on the schedule]), the Shirow-Lionpuffer Rally, an annual off-road trek through the desert, and the Double Diamond Dash, a now famous motorcycle race set on a course shaped like two diamonds set side by side.
In recent years, the people of Fishy Apples have started to acquire an interest in aerospace, and with it racing in the skies.

Besides typical racing, long has there been a history of bobsledding in the mountains, as well as its cousin sport skeleton, and our racing culture latched on to this sport as well, working to make it more and more exciting over the decades. We have even modified some sleds through a bit of engineering and magic to run on sand dunes and mud. Who needs snow and ice!! We don't!!

Because of our largely agrarian and mountainous culture, many events that are now commonly associated with the rodeo first became popular with land-dwellers in the late medieval era, roughly the 1400's, as a means of both practicing wrangling in unruly livestock and, particularly with the lassoing and whipping skills, a form of peasant self-defense training. Given that horses were treated with greater respect than in many nations (as there was always a possibly if you encountered one in Fishy Apples they could be of the small sapient magical pastel Equestrian type instead of the beastly type), yaks became the beasts of choice for riding in our rodeos.
In the 1700's, as the rodeo became more popular as a sport, mermaids began to also take part in the sport as well, especially after it became known that Queen Lorelai III was an avid fan of performing rope tricks and yak riding. Now professional rodeo is a multi-billion fart sport, with three regional amateur leagues and a a national professional league set up into two divisions.

Swimming, is, of course, obvious, given 58% of our population are mermaids, so swimming is something many of our people have an affinity for, though many that can do so are now living more and more out of water, so swimming isn't an instant given, and, it may shock some outsiders, but there are even some mermaids that have phobias about water. This has led to in just these last few years having a human taking gold in the 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2018 Nationals, and even a nekomimi (who have had to deal with a nasty stereotype of hating water for ages) winning silver in 2017 and 2018. However, overall, we have a penchant for swimming, with a every high school and university in the nation having their own swimming team.

Fishy Apples also has a keen love of archery. Thanks to magic and firearms never really developing much further than the flintlock musket, archery has remained a very viable means of combat and self-defense in Fishy Apples. As a result of this and our peoples' love of their military, archery as sport began over 4000 years ago, but didn't become accessible and professionally organized for all until about 250 years ago, starting with the Goldsmith Sniper's League, a clay target shooting league. This was followed by the Jonagold Archery Association, a more traditional archery league. In turn, later came the Northern Spy League, a league that operated on choosing which targets to shoot or not (much like police and military training courses), and the Braeburn Shootout, a league centered on speed over accuracy, all of which are part of the greater Fishy Apples Archery Alliance, a world-renowned archery league.
