It drives up rent prices for everyone else.

Were the rent prices particularly affordable before then?

Or how about one could just stop throwing a hissy fit in how the rich spend their money. Of the many things to worry about, this isn't even in the top 1 million of things to worry about.

There are some issues with it. Areas can basically turn into ghost towns, cause the luxury houses/apartments aren't being bought/lived in.

The property value argument is fair, but as a counterpoint, it's not like they're going to be building their luxury apartments in the middle of poorer areas. They're going to build them where everyone else builds them, in nice, rich, posh areas

yeah because everything should be about making a profit.

Yes, that's how economies work.
Lets just build only housing for the rich only they should be able to afford housing

Only the rich should be able to afford housing where property values are so high that the only way a developer can make money is to sell the property to rich people.

yeah because the heck with anyone else who lives here. Only rich snobs with more money then I could ever possibly earn matter.

San Francisco is a prime example. Its a city only the rich can afford at this point.

Considering you were able to afford living in nice, rich areas where they’d build those towers, I’m sure you’ll land on your feet.

These towers have the potential to make my rent higher. Its likely only a matter of time before they come to my area and start building these eyesores there.

Why would they build them in your area? Is it somewhere where rich types would want to use as their second homes?

20 years ago you could get a 1 bedroom apt in hells kitchen for 700 a month. If not rent controlled that same apt would be around 3,500 a month now.

HOW IS IT A WASTE OF LAND?

If I buy a $15 million piece of prime Manhattan real estate, it doesn't matter if I build a single-family home on it or a 2000' tower full of luxury apartments that nobody else lives in, you're still not going to be living there.

You could be building stuff for the average person not a uber rich person who will likely spend a day or two there.

You could be building housing to give away for free. Think bigger, Lumen. You don't have to stop at wanting middle class people to be able to afford housing, you can go further and want everyone to be able to afford housing because housing has been decommodified and doesn't cost anything.

But why would they want to? There’s a reason why they build them in richer areas, that’s typically where the better locations are.

Go further. Ban rent. Ban mortgages. Crash the housing market with no survivors.

At the very least, government provided housing for those that can’t afford it otherwise is something I could get behind.
