I wouldn't mind it focusing on certain individuals in the past few centuries. There'd be a way to bring them into the conversation, such as the many ways people in the past had to hide their homosexuality, or the societies in the past that were tolerant and even accepting of different sexual and gender orientations and whatnot.

Black history month was non-existent in my school. Instead we focused on African American individuals throughout my history class as they fit in.

But you can mention Alan's contributions without going into his being gay. You cant get away from the blackness of Sojourner Truth when talking about her.
