As a cultural phenomenon tied in with legal recognition, this is a difficult concept. The distinction must be made between adolescence and adulthood, as well as adulthood, and the embodiment of sociocultural values that make one according to their peers a true man or woman.

For boys, it is perhaps simpler. At age twelve, a boy ceases to be a child in the full sense of the word and becomes a 'young man'. He is not ascribed culturally or legally the position of adult, but as a young man, he is included more in the adult life of the family he is raised in, and is expected to adopt responsibilities and behaviours befitting such a role. This carries on for four years until his sixteenth birthday. This day is the coming of age day for all males under Selian culture. It is a celebrated family event, where the young man is bestowed with the citizen's white cloak. It is traditional and still widely practised today for the extended family of such a male to attend this ceremony and recognise him as a man grown. When this is done, it is done very formally and typically in order of rank. His own father, followed by his brothers will make this recognition first. Second comes his mother and sisters. The family of his father, and then his mother, in the same order if in attendance.

The day receives such great celebration even today due to the strength of tradition. In the past, for a boy to have survived to adolescence and then full manhood was never an assured reality, as many children would die in birth and many again before their tenth birthday. Survival was, and in many ways still is, regarded as a feat of strength and will by the individual, the same strength and will that culturally is perceived to define at least in part the values ascribed to masculinity. The day is therefore a celebration not only of his rise to adulthood as a man but the very qualities that define him as such.

Another tradition, again widely practised though not in identical forms, is that of sexual accomplishment. Despite coming of age at sixteen, it is very unusual for a man to marry before twenty-five, and most commonly do so around age thirty. For men of the Freehold directly participatory in Selian culture, sex is primarily derived from prostitutes and slaves until marriage, and copulation is in many ways considered a skill or an art, though not a public one by any means. Whilst not always performed on the day he has come of age, it is very routine for the family of a newly recognised man to provide him with his first adult experience in the traditionally expected male role of sex, both to initiate the adult sex life until marriage as well as traditionally to ensure no man dies in battle (as was common) without having known a woman. A household slave might be provided, or a prostitute of cost scaled to the wealth of the family.

At age eighteen, all citizen males are called up for a period of military service to the state, although they are able to volunteer from age sixteen and are highly encouraged to do so as proof of their masculinity and virtue. This is considered a supporting pillar of a man's publicly recognised adulthood and masculinity, as is political participation. Finally, although most likely not for a while after coming of age, the establishment of a family and the siring of his own children is considered both the highest service to the state and the epitome of higher manhood. This is where the distinction between an adult male and the position known as a 'rypios', or a household master, comes into effect. The former is a man at or above his coming of age. The latter is the commander of a social unit with increased responsibility and expectations.

For girls the matter is more complicated as it is almost entirely class dependent. Like boys, she has a period of adolescence starting from her menarche (first menstruation). The international median for this event is considered fourteen, although this is raised by the observed delay in menarche in eastern populations. Ethnic Selian girls usually reach menarche between the age of twelve and thirteen with an average of about 12.4 years. Culturally, this event marks them as fertile, and they adopt the title of a 'maiden' or 'young woman'. Historically, especially in the Classical Era of Selia, a girl would likely be betrothed at this age and could be expected to marry no later than fourteen in most instances. Modern Ephyra however differs somewhat from the past.

Whilst it remains true that after arriving at her menarche, a girl's father or other legal guardian will begin the process of selecting a husband for her (marriage in Ephyra is very much considered a union of families through individuals, with very little to do with personal affection and everything to do with connections and alliances), the actual marriage very rarely takes place any younger than sixteen years. Lower class girls will marry older than upper class ones. However, there is no equivalent age of majority in the culture or even law of Ephyra. The closest is the aforementioned menarche, the age at which a girl culturally becomes ready for marriage, even if socially this doesn't occur for several years. The transition from maiden or young woman into a married woman is considered the transition into womanhood proper, a woman grown, no longer a girl.

Therefore, instead of a coming of age ceremony, girls or young women mark their transition into adulthood with their first (ideally only) marriage. This can hypothetically mean that a young woman of the upper classes may be considered an adult despite being younger than a young woman of the lower classes. Because women are not called up for national service, and the virtues of womanhood are considered largely distinct from that of men, there is no real intermediate period that men have between coming of age and getting married. From adolescence, a girl will adopt duties in the way boys do, but in imitation of their mother as opposed to their father. This is to afford them the skills necessary for being a wife and mother.

Marriage is typically consummated on the night it takes place, and whilst there is no official ceremony in the manner seen in other cultures, the process is official and legal. By general custom she remains a part of her birth family, and is not subject to her husband's power as a rypios the way her children with him will be.

In short. Boys reach adolescence at twelve, become men and full citizens at sixteen, but only come to perform their marital and reproductive duties to the state at around age thirty.
Girls reach adolescence at the age of menarche, and roughly between the ages of sixteen and twenty, are married to perform their own marital and reproductive duties to the state.

There cultural age of majority therefore for boys is sixteen, and for girls, whenever they first marry.
