Details of the U.S.A.R.'s 2nd elections

Ibrahimovicstadt, Capital District - (NAP) The Union of Socialist Alpine Republics were created in february 2019 following the treaty of Malbork and the first Alpine elections were held in summer 2019. Which means new elections are due for june 2023 in the middle of the qualifications for the World Cup 82 and just before the start of the XIII Olympiad. The first elections 4 years ago had an electorial system based off the United States, a fictive nation created in an online game called RL States. Last year, Chancellor Arijana Ibrahimovic tabled a bill which change the electoral system to a new one based off Switzerland, another fictive nation created in RL states. Let me explain the new electoral system. First of all, the Union of Alpine Socialist Republics will be a semi direct democracy, which means every citizen can call for a referendum if they don't like the proposed bill.

The Alpine Union will have a Federal Assembly, which consists of two chambers: The National Council (lower house) and the Council of States (upper house). In the National Council, republics are represented according to population for a total of 300 deputies. In the Council of States, republics have either one, two or three representatives, also depending on population (except two small republics who shares the same representative) for a total of 48 senators.

Here is a table that explains how many deputies (National Council) and senators (Council of States) will be elected by each republics:

Code	Republic Deputees Senators

AM Alsace-Mecklenburg 7 2
AC Amalfi Coast 2 1
AQ Aquitaine 4 2
BW Bangweulu Wetlands 17 2
EH Basque Country 1 1
SW Black Forest 1 1
BS Bohemia and Silesia 1 1
BT Bothnia 2 1
BR Britannia 8 2
CD Caledonia 10 2
CA Cambria 1 1
KR Carniola 7 2
CS Castilla 3 1
CT Catalonia 2 1
CH Chattahoochee 60 3
DI Dalmatia and Istria 16 2
GU Guianas 1 0,5
HZ Herzegovina 5 2
HO Hollandia 2 1
HY Hybernia 2 1
IL Isla Lubang 1 1
OK Okanogan 6 2
LU/PT Lusitania* 1 1
WP Prussia East 41 3
SG Saguenay 18 2
SA Samsø 3 1
SO Sonoma 30 3
VI Southern Virgin Islands 1 0,5
TD Transdanubia 7 2
WA Wabash 40 3
300 48

* The Republic of Portugal has changed its name to Republic of Lusitania, a more modern name.

The elections for the National Council will be held nationwide on June 1st 2023.

Each republics is responsible for the election of their own representative(s) at the Council of States. These elections must be held between April 1st 2023 and June 15th 2023.

Here is the list of authorized political parties in the Union of Socialist Alpine Republics:

Democratic-Republican Party (DRP)
Labour Party (LAB)
Monkey Party (MP)
United Workers Party (UWP)
Social Democratic Union (SDU)
Socialist Party (SP)

Furthermore, the Alpine Union will have a Federal Council, which is a 7 members executive council that constitute the federal government of the U.S.A.R.and serves as the collective executive head of government and state of the Alpine Union. They will be elected by the Federal Assembly (National Council and Council of States) on July 1st 2023.

The position of Federal Chancellor (head of government and state) rotates among the seven Councillors on a yearly basis, with the year's Vice Chancellor becoming next year's Chancellor. A year starts on July 1st and ends on June 30th.

Here are the principal functions of the 7 members of the Federal Council:

-Head of the Federal Department of Finance
-Head of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications
-Head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs
-Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research
-Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs
-Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports
-Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police

Along with the Feredal Council, the Federal Assembly also elects 3 General Secretaries which serves as federal clerks and assists the Federal Council in their functions.

And, unlike in the Free Republics, only Alpine citizens are allowed to vote in these elections. The Alpine Union does not want foreigners to interfere in their elections. It is known that a total of 250,000 Alpines voted in the last Free Republics elections and 80-85% of them voted for that female pop singer named Scarlett Nicholls and this is something we want to avoid in the Alpine Union.

Lisander National Baseball Team
Ranking: 39th, 4.04pts
Style Mod: +2
Trigramme: LIS
Nickname: Arminhos (Stoats)
Colors: White and Black (Livery colors of Prince of Ermines)
Mascot: Lisanderian Stoat (Mustela Erminea Lisanderia)
Record: 70-84 (in WBC 52-71)
WBC 44:10-20 (5th in Group 4)

General Information
Baseball in Lisander is forever a promise of evolution. The history of the sport in the principality is somewhat irregular. Arminhos, the national team, participated in two editions of the International Baseball Slam years ago before the interest fade away. Lately, the Ministry of Sports's continued support for the National Baseball Association (rebranded as National Baseball League) has been important in ensuring the continuity of the Arminhos on the international stage and Lisander national team played recently in editions 40, 41, 42 and 44 of WBC. In addition, local business investments are being very valuable for establishing professional teams in a league that may, in the near future, exceed current Rookie level.

The main contingent of first-generation baseball players in Lisander was made up of immigrants, especially from Caribbean nations such as Saint Ianina and the Far East as Kikunomi. In cities with large numbers of immigrants and descendants like Aomori, Kikunomijin names and surnames can be seen in the small ballparks. In the last decades, in particular, immigrant descent families have given their children Latin names, and this national team is a reflection of Lisander's miscegenated society, with names like Shunsuke Montells, Rafael Inoue and Alex Itosugi, four of the newcomers to the 28-man roster. Another influence of Kikunomijin baseball is the number of Rotation Pitchers, 6 instead of 5.

The growth of the sport over the years is due not only to immigrants but also to the media. Watching the big leagues of other countries, more and more young people are interested in baseball. College students began to form teams and play among themselves, and when these guys leave college, the sport continues. The amateur leagues received a great influx of this generation that learned baseball "in front of the tv, without interest in football or rugby". Aomori Institute of Technology won the biggest title of Lisanderian Baseball, the NationStates College Baseball championship. Names like catcher Guilherme Hirano, Milo Akagi (who plays for Shichijou Lions in the last Kikunomijin Baseball Alliance, for short, KBA) and the captain of that team, Eric Selden, joined the Arminhos for this WBC 45. Together with them, the Starter pitcher of Soria University, Lisandro Rafael Antos (the first Lisanderian without Kikunomijin ancestor to play for Amane Buffaloes, of Kikunomijin Baseball Alliance).

And it's with a mixed team of such diverse origins that the Lisander Arminhos begins its journey at WBC 45. A group of veteran remnants of the two IBS appearances, former college students trying to continue in baseball, and a few prominent amateurs betting his chips that can build a career in the sport. All of them preparing for a new era of professionalism, and full of expectations with what comes around.

Venue
Image

Aomori is a 40,000 inhabitants city in Western Lisander. 70% of the population is from Kikunomijin (i.e. East Asian) origin. Aomori Park Stadium is a modest baseball venue, the oldest baseball stadium in Lisander. Built forty years ago, is the only stadium available while Florian Field in Soria is being expanded to be the primary baseball venue in the capital. Aomori Park Stadium has 2,000 seats, but depending on the interest, some removable seats may be added.

Uniforms
Unlike most national teams, Lisander does not use white and green as his first combination of uniform, but rather white and black, which are the livery colours of the house of the Prince of the Ermines, heir to the Crown of the Principality. The Sovereign of Lisander Peter IV, while still Prince of the Ermine, placed the Association under his patronage. As a form of thanks, the national team adopted the colours of its coat of arms, which also represent the colours of the national animal itself.Image
Arminhos uniforms urgently needed an update. The previous model had been used since the IBS era. A new cap logo was created, and the new typography matches the jersey script. As usual, the Home uniform is white with black sox and the Away uniform have a subtle pinstriped black jersey, white pants, and black socks. The brand-new alternate uniform brings the national colours instead of prince colors, and features the name of the nation instead of the cap logo that can be seen in away one.

Roster
Catchers
#30 |C| Adrian Solis | 30 yo | Soria Mariners
A veteran from IBS, was the reserve catcher in that time. Now, with 30 years old, is unquestionably the better catcher in a nation with few good ones. He has great vision of the pitch. 8th at bat.

#2 | C | Guilherme Hirano | 20 yo | Aomori Institute of Technology
The NSCB champion catcher. He still has a college year to attend, but his abilities earned him a place on this team. Lisander is needing catchers, and this one is growing to be big.

Pitching Rotation
#4 | P | Tiago Porter | 28 yo | Antioch Arrows
Tiago Porter was a boy from Soria who has never played or watched baseball before the college, but his right-hand fastball is probably the best in Lisander.

#18 | P | Alain Matsumori | 26 yo | Aomori Blitz
Another IBS veteran. Alumni of Aomori Institute of Technology, founded with his brother Julian, the baseball section of Aomori Blitz. They also were coaching the AIT team who won NSCB.

#44 | P | Shunsuke Montells | 25 yo | Sirenia Suns
Montells is a Half-Kikunomijin who lived the last seven years in Kikunomi. He played for Oenara Hawks of Kikunomijin Baseball Alliance.

#90 | P | Martin Barrios | 23 yo | Kasandora Dockers
Played IBS VIII and IX. Is part of the effort to popularize baseball in Lisander being the Ace Pitcher of Kasandora Dockers, a newly-formed team who hasn't ever played.

#20 | P | Lisandro Rafael Antos | 21 yo | Amane Buffaloes, Kikunomi
Antos was in his last year of playing for the University of Soria when US joined NSCB. His skills were noted by the management team of Amane Buffaloes, from KBA.

#11 | P | Pedro Katzel | 20 yo | Aomori Giants
Katzel was the Ace pitcher of NSCB title of AIT. Like many other U-22s, he's playing part time in local professional team.

Bullpen
#10 | P | Lucas Secondat | 19 yo | I Lupi di Moria (Moria Wolves)
Even tempted to go to the Academy of a KBA team, Secondat decided to finish his AIT graduation and play part-time for his city team.

#70 | P | Alex Barone | 30 yo | Soria Mariners
Alex Barone is a very reliable pitcher, being in the team as a relief pitcher since IBS VIII.

#24 | P | Frederic Nanterre | 32 yo | Kasandora Dockers
With many years of his life dedicated to baseball, he's a central figure in Kasandora Dockers, acting like player-manager.

#44 | P/DH | Rafael Inoue | 24 yo | Aomori Blitz
Inoue is another solid pitcher, but also have some good batting skills. He'll be Designed Hitter against Western Phoenicia because of his experience in Shichijou Lions Academy. 9th at bat, like every other pitcher.

#46 | P | Pierre Oyon | 26 yo | Despina Dragons
Ace pitcher for Despina Dragons, is on the team since IBS. Solid right 4-seam ball.

#15 |P | Theodore Canterville | 26 yo | Antioch Arrows
The second pitcher of Antioch Arrows rotation is recovering from an injury on his elbow, so won't be seen much around the field.

Infielders
#8 | 1B |Ricardo Rios | 30 yo | Antioch Arrows
A phisically strong First Baseman, is also know by strong hit. 6th at bat.

#3 | 2B | Trevor Essendon | 27 yo | Soria Mariners
Strong-handed, Essendon was a pitcher when first played. His vision of the field is renowned. He and Adrian Solis are friends for many years and have nice pitch chemistry. 5th at bat.

#7 | SS |Rei Yokoyama | 29 yo | Eiryou Stars, Kikunomi
Fast as a doe, Rei is three times the MVP of Lisander semi-pro league, and is playing in KBA, for Eiryou Stars. 4th at bat.

#19 | 3B | Alex Itosugi | 24 yo | Aomori Giants
Third baseman, 2nd at bat. A very agile player. Left-handed.

#33 | IN | Eric Selden | 21 yo | I Lupi di Moria (Moria Wolves)
Captain of Aomori Institute of Technology team, this First Baseman also acts like Moria Wolves manager, being probably the youngest baseball manager of all time.

#28 | IN | Milo Akagi | 20 yo | Shichijou Lions Academy, Kikunomi
Following the steps of his older brother Toji, Milo Akagi transferred to Shichijou Lions Academy, to study and work with Baseball. Despite his size, he's a very technical Third Baseman.

#13 | IN | Tiago Koizumi | 22 yo | Aomori Giants
Another AIT Alumni, he decided to keep playing baseball in one of the local teams. He's a Second Baseman.

Outfielders
#16 | LF | Martin Hansen | 26 yo | Kasandora Dockers
Called the "Silent Seven" for his speed and an excellent batter, Hansen signed a long-term contract with Kasandora Dockers, but some newspapers say he's leaving for KBA in the next season. 3rd at Bat.

#26 | RF | Toji Akagi | 28 yo | Shichijou Lions, Kikunomi
The Akagi older brother lives baseball 24 hours per day. He's a player for Shichijou Lions of KBA and also is a baseball teacher in a school for Lisanderian Expats. He's an all-rounder. His sense of position made him the best RF in the nation, and he's also a confident batter. 1st at bat.

#6 | CF | Julian Matsumori | 27 yo | Aomori Blitz
Julian, as his brother, is a founder and plays for Aomori Blitz. One is a pitcher and the other is a batter. Being a fast man, he left right field and was moved to center by Coach Hiddleston in IBS X. He now rules in that position.

#17 | OF | Iker Inglis | 19 yo | Aomori Institute of Technology
Inglis is a young CF, who had a great NSCB and is evaluating his career, thinking about moving to pros. Will be reserve for gather experience.

#81 | OF | Virgulino Kapsberg | 19 yo | University of Soria
Kapsberg can play in both left and right outfield since he's ambidextrous. Also can play as a catcher, if any problem happens.

Management
#9 | Manager | Kenji Hirano | 38 yo | Aomori Giants/Arminhos
After nearly fifteen years serving Aomori Giants and Arminhos as a Third Baseman, Hirano finally retired from the pitch and accepted a management position in the National Baseball League.

#1 | Assistant Manager | Christina Hishida | 20 yo | Aomori Institute of Technology
Christina is an outfielder ready to play, but since National Baseball League must adhere Ministry for Sport guidelines for sports competitions to receive financial support, she isn't allowed to play in NBL. Yet, Baseball rules make no distinction on gender, and the matter is on the Lisander Sports Superior Court. Hishida was officially assigned as Assistant Manager and players agreed to give her #1 jersey in protest against the Ministry for Sport rule.

#0 | Head Coach | Todd Heimler | 46 yo | Arminhos
The University of Soria Bats head coach was assigned to be the coach of Arminhos in this WBC.

#77 | Assistant Coach | Edward Langley | 39 yo | Antioch Arrows
A pitcher who recently retired, was invited to join the roster as an assistant. Langley played with most of its team in IBS.

OOC: This WBC takes place ICly a year after WBC 43 and 44. Stats are from the previous year's season and have not been updated as the current season of domestic Republican baseball has not yet been completed. The Republican calendar is based around the World Cup and as the WBC has been run more frequently than the World Cup of late, WBCs end up happening at irregular times in Republican time. Players have been aged and stadiums have been updated but I have not updated the notes to reflect the events of last WBC due to Olympic-related time constraints. Most of these players also played at the Olympics but they have since left the Republican teams and re-joined the WBC team.

Notes (Unchanged since WBC 44)

After an embarrassing failure to even make the playoffs on home soil at WBC 42, the Republican National Baseball Team was completely revamped going into WBC 43. Republican National Baseball, LLC fired the entire coaching staff and carried on an extensive search to find a new manager. Eventually, they settled upon Kyle Thomas as the new manager. Thomas hired a completely new coaching staff, including former national team pitcher Aimone Cremonesi as the new pitching coach. The new coaching staff carried out an extensive scouting expedition to build a new team, eventually settling on a roster of 30, which was significantly smaller than previous Republican National Team rosters.

For the first time, the Free Republics sent a mixed-gender team to this WBC and the new women players made significant contributions to the team. The first woman selected to the team was Luana Cremonesi, the niece of the pitching coach. As a freshman, she won the closer job for the Nejax Horns, one of the elite college teams in the Free Republics and helped lead the team to a national championship by being virtually unhittable all season long. Honomi Kamei and Hollie Rogers started at shortstop and 3rd base, respectively. Kamei was the sole bright spot on a terrible Republica Vipers team, putting up numbers that would have likely won the MVP award on a better team. Hollie Rogers was the reigning RABL MVP after leading the Barkersville Titans to a surprise pennant (she has since won a second consecutive RABL MVP and led the Titans to another pennant). Teresa Mrazova's handling of the New City Time Bombs pitching staff was a major reason why the Time Bombs had won the XBL pennant, which won her a 3rd place finish in XBL Rookie of the Year voting. She served as Zac Gatehouse's personal catcher but otherwise backed up Brock Shield. Evelin Norberg and Julie Brodeur played key roles on a Petrograd Greed team that led the XBL in scoring but failed to repeat due to the implosion of their starting pitchers. Brodeur could fill in at any position in the event that a player is hurt or needs rest.

Kamei emerged as arguably the best player in the world with a dominant performance last WBC and could another giant leap forward during the XBL season that saw her voted the unanimous MVP as she led a much better Republica Vipers team, including new signing Brock Shield, to a respectable 4th place finish. Kyle Thomas named Teresa Mrazova as the starting catcher for this WBC after she took the next step as a hitter during the XBL season, keeping the Time Bombs afloat in spite of Nicholas Fisher's down season. Taryn Russell takes Sheamus O'Connor's spot in the rotation while O'Connor remains on the roster as a long reliever in Leon Eichel's old spot. Eichel had an extremely bad season for the Oldston Arsonists at 39 and was dropped from the national team. Russell broke out for the Arsonists this year, emerging as the team's new ace. On the 5th matchday of this WBC's group stage, she will become the first female starting pitcher for the Republican National Team. The Republican rotation has been shuffled based on the results of last WBC and the recent domestic season. Namo Busque, who signed with the New City Time Bombs during the WBC, will now be the Republican National Team's ace while Gioacchino Arcuri, who was awarded the Platinum Arm award for best pitcher in the XBL, will start third because Kyle Thomas didn't want to start two lefties back-to-back. The fact that the two pitchers widely regarded as the best in the XBL would start against Liventia and Maklohi Vai, respectively, was surely just a coincidence.

The Republican players are all listed as the same age as they were in WBC 43 because this WBC is ICly taking place in the same calendar year as WBC 43, under the Republican timeline, except that WBC 43 occurred before the domestic baseball season and WBC 44 is occurring shortly after its conclusion. OOCly, this is due to this WBC's group stage taking place during the World Cup finals.

While the designated hitter Nicholas Fisher is a great hitter, he is absolutely awful in the field and thus will only be used as a pinch hitter in games where the designated hitter is not being used.

All of the players on the bench are likely to see playing time over the course of the WBC and Kyle Thomas will not hesitate to pull a pitcher who is obviously tired. Strategic substitutions and defensive shifts should be expected at appropriate times.

The various leagues in which these players compete domesticaly vary greatly in terms of caliber of play. The ENBL in Newmanistan is obviously vastly superior to any of the domestic leagues in the FFR but among those domestic leagues the XBL and the TPB are the best leagues with the RABL and SPBAA on a slightly lower tier. The RCAA is college baseball and therefore plays only a 60 game regular season with a much lower level of play.

The Baseball Federation of Liventia announces its 25-man roster for the 45th World Baseball Classic, as Liventia attempts to continue its playoff streak since the country returned to international play.

Liventia opened WBC45 with a secondary roster made up of players not at the Olympic Games. After seven games played, the team, also called the 'Red-and-Gold', called up a number of Olympians, who are listed in the roster below. The players released back to their clubs are also listed, but struck out and in grey.

The Liventian Baseball Championship is currently made up of 24 teams in six divisions of four, with 12 in each conference (the National Baseball League and Challenge Baseball League). Teams are not 'franchises' and are based permanently in cities and towns.
The NBL does not use the designated hitter, while the CBL does. Sixteen teams qualify for the playoffs (three division winners plus next five best teams by record per conference) after a 104–game season. Note that therefore, the statistics provided below for each player are for a 104–game season, not 162, except for hitters' major league career averages.

Other info: The team will rely on sabermetric splits and substitutions, especially in innings 7 to 9 (or if behind early).

Home ground:
Liventia will use only one home ground this season, the quirky Port Cartfort Park.
Port Cartfort Park, capacity 24,100; DH used
Home ground of The Saboteurs Baseball Club Port Cartfort (CBL), average home attendance 22,100
Dimensions:
Left foul pole 317 ft; left field 349 ft; left-centre 397 ft; centre field 429 ft; right-centre 402 ft; right field 366 ft; right foul pole 322 ft; wall height 7 ft in left/left-centre; 13 ft in centre; 15 ft in right/right-centre
Right-handed hitters have far more joy at PCP than left-handed hitters. There are also a high number of triples and thanks to the dimensions, inside-the-park home runs are not uncommon at PCP.

Transport: National rail from Orean or City Centre; then local bus routes.

Style modifier: +3

Starting Rotation
1. Oscar Bastable (#76), age 31, throws right, bats switch. Club: Olympton Rapiers
This season: 13–3, 2.13 ERA, 112 K, 25 BB, 1.03 WHIP, .225 OAVG
Last season: 12–7, 2.99 ERA, 134 K, 32 BB, 1.09 WHIP, .232 OAVG

One of just seven men to have thrown a no-hitter in the revived league. Hits 92–94 mph, with a four-seamer, slider, forkball and changeup.

2. Tony Metson (#22), age 34, throws right, bats right. Club: Orean Outer Oysters
This season: 9–5, 2.13 ERA, 119 K, 22 BB, 0.87 WHIP, .190 OAVG
Last season: 8–6, 2.31 ERA, 124 K, 26 BB, 0.84 WHIP, .187 OAVG

Ages like a fine wine, Metson continues to bamboozle opposing hitters at the plate. One of just two men to have thrown a perfect game in the league. 93–96 mph. Pitches: Changeup, cutter, four-seamer, two-seamer

3. Fraser Mansell (#27), age 22, throws right, bats left. Club: Colver Steamrollers
This season: 12–6, 2.25 ERA, 157 K, 20 BB, 0.83 WHIP, .190 OAVG
Last season: 12–2, 2.28 ERA, 124 K, 29 BB, 1.00 WHIP, .208 OAVG

Continued to dominate on the mound this season and then some. Led all pitchers in wins above replacement. A popular guy. Throws 92–94 mph. Pitches: Changeup, four-seamer, slider

2 4. Wayne Vann (#34), age 30, throws right, bats right. Club: Batogo Forest Raiders
This season: 6–4, 2.26 ERA, 111 K, 21 BB, 0.99 WHIP, .218 OAVG
Last season: 11–7, 3.19 ERA, 128 K, 33 BB, 1.13 WHIP, .237 OAVG

Don't look at Vann's win/loss record, for he received no run support this season for the 46–58 Raiders. Throws 94–96 mph, with an incredible six-pitch repertoire: forkball, four-seamer, splitter, cutter, slider and changeup.

3 5. Jonathan Twain (#20), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: Port Cartfort Saboteurs
This season: 15–1, 2.64 ERA, 155 K, 33 BB, 1.20 WHIP, .250 OAVG
Last season: 8–5, 3.68 ERA, 130 K, 30 BB, 1.25 WHIP, .245 OAVG

This guy's got stuff and heat. Sure, he gets hit a bit more, but despite playing in Port Cartfort Park somehow only gave up six home runs this season. Led the league in wins. Registers 99–101 mph on the speed gun. Throws a deadly four-seamer, which he complements with a changeup, curveball, and circle change.

Henry Bates (#27), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: Talbott South Hilltops
This season: 9–7, 2.28 ERA, 107 K, 41 BB, 1.12 WHIP, .224 OAVG
Last season: 8–10, 4.04 ERA, 124 K, 50 BB, 1.27 WHIP, .241 OAVG

Another starter on a below-par team, Bates has had a career year by posting his first winning, sub-four ERA season since he hit the big leagues. One of the quicker starters in the league at 95–97 mph. Throws a cutter, four-seamer, forkball, and changeup.

Brenden Scott (#13), age 29, throws left, bats left. Club: Dover Outer North Buzzards
This season: 10–2, 2.56 ERA, 71 K, 33 BB, 1.10 WHIP, .217 OAVG
Last season: 6–7, 5.40 ERA, 66 K, 43 BB, 1.60 WHIP, .287 OAVG

Not a big strikeout guy, but finally got his command under control this season to record a sub-three ERA. Throws 93–95 mph, with a four-seamer, slider, and changeup.

Bullpen
Frank Kenley (long relief #19), age 21, throws left, bats left. Club: Talbott South Hilltops
LBC: 6–1 2 SV, 1.53 ERA, 90 K, 16 BB, 1.05 WHIP, .217 OAVG; throws 92–94 mph, pitches: four-seamer, two-seamer, splitter

Arthur Laidler (long relief #12), age 27, throws right, bats left. Club: Leigham Timberjacks (AAA; Jesner)
AAA: 11–1, 2.52 ERA, 82 K, 13 BB, 0.92 WHIP, .217 OAVG. Throws 95–97 mph. Pitches: Cutter, four-seamer, changeup

Robin Holyday (long/middle relief #32), age 21, throws right, bats left. Club: Dover Outer South Bills
LBC: 0–1, 3.45 ERA, 18 K, 9 BB, 1.34 WHIP, .200 OAVG
AAA: 14–3 1 SV, 3.21 ERA, 152 K, 38 BB, 1.31 WHIP, .265 OAVG
. Throws 99–101 mph. Pitches: Four-seamer, curveball, changeup

Zach Quested (middle relief #41), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: Brister Cruisers (AAA; Talbott South)
AAA: 1–0 1 SV, 1.98 ERA, 65 K, 22 BB, 1.22 WHIP, .231 OAVG. Throws 96–98 mph; four-seamer, splitter, slurve

Gary Hale (long/middle relief #35), age 34, throws right, bats right. Club: Neverend Gunslingers
LBC: 4–2 1 SV, 2.64 ERA, 95 K, 2 BB, 0.88 WHIP, .228 OAVG. A frankly silly 47.5 K/BB ratio this season justifies Hale's place in the side, despite his past struggles at WBC level. 96–98 mph. Throws: Four-seamer, two-seamer, splitter

Gabriel Mumford (middle relief #31), age 20, throws left, bats left. Club: City Centre Keys
LBC: 5–2 1 SV, 2.60 ERA, 97 K, 23 BB, 1.20 WHIP, .228 OAVG. A bit wild with his control but boy can he make batters look silly. Throws 98–100 mph. Pitches: Sinker, changeup, two-seamer.

Mark Staite (middle relief/set-up #33), age 21, throws right, bats right. Club: Neverend Gunslingers
LBC: 3–2 27 SV, 1.56 ERA, 56 K, 13 BB, 1.21 WHIP, .234 OAVG; throws 98–100 mph; pitches: four-seamer, sinker, curveball.

Aiden Horne (closer #77), age 27, throws right, bats right.
Plays in the Newmanistan Baseball League. Throws four-seamer, cutter, changeup.

Position players
C Finley Grainger (#83), age 33, throws right, bats right. Club: Orean Capital Tiger-Cats
This season (94 games): .378, 16 HR, 70 RBI, 75 BB, 55 K, 14 SB
Career avg (162 games): .344, 18 HR, 97 RBI, 81 BB, 90 K, 22 SB

Led the league in batting average and batting WAR. Has decent speed for a catcher and knows how to steal a bag or two.

1B Edward Mull (#17), age 21, throws left, bats left. Club: Talbott South Hilltops
This season (101 games): .309, 22 HR, 55 RBI, 30 BB, 81 K
Career avg (162 games): .304, 28 HR, 71 RBI, 35 BB, 99 K

Can't run. Has a bit of pop. Has a long career ahead of him at the top level.

2B Eddie Denve (#7), age 32, throws right, bats left. Club: Jesner Spin Doctors
This season (100 games): .328, 25 HR, 79 RBI, 44 BB, 72 K
Career avg (162 games): .313, 39 HR, 121 RBI, 66 BB, 91 K

Can also play first base, third base, and shortstop. A great defensive infielder who's got an eye for making contact and the power to boot. Could work more on avoiding striking out.

3B David Stelfox (#25), age 26, throws right, bats right. Club: Olympton Rapiers
This season (100 games): .335, 12 HR, 56 RBI, 35 BB, 83 K, 24 SB
Career avg (162 games): .291, 12 HR, 74 RBI, 42 BB, 163 K, 32 SB

Returns to the national team, having been on the WBC43 roster. Can also play first base and shortstop. Loves a steal. Strikes out a bit too often.

SS Kian Sergeant (#18), age 31, throws right, bats right; also plays 1B, 2B, 3B. Club: Colver Steamrollers
This season (83 games): .357, 2 HR, 35 RBI, 65 BB, 37 K, 14 SB
Career (162-game avg): .317, 3 HR, 56 RBI, 84 BB, 47 K, 23 SB

Can run. Great fielder. No pop in his bat. Second in the big leagues in batting average this season, only behind Grainger.

LF Ryan Farquharson (#30), age 37, throws right, bats right; can also play RF. Club: Lantgoma Snipers
This season (102 games): .335, 21 HR, 97 RBI, 60 BB, 106 K
Career (162-game avg): .326, 41 HR, 145 RBI, 90 BB, 167 K

He's not getting much younger but continues to tear the league apart and earn his spot on the national roster. Gap hitter, loves an extra base hit. Led the league, obviously, in XBH, doubles, and total bases.

SS Wayne Poll (#16), age 33, throws right, bats right. Club: Bosting Blue Birds
This season (100 games): .298, 5 HR, 38 RBI, 66 BB, 64 K
Career avg (162 games): .303, 7 HR, 74 RBI, 86 BB, 88 K

Another former WBC player making a return to the Red-and-Gold. Don't expect him to run or go deep.

LF George York (#25), age 35, throws left, bats left. Club: Bede Swordfish
This season (97 games): .305, 17 HR, 59 RBI, 42 BB, 83 K, 13 SB
Career avg (162 games): .325, 28 HR, 97 RBI, 78 BB, 130 K, 24 SB

Can play across the outfield, although best in left or centre. Great range, but only an average arm, so chance your luck if you're on third. Doesn't mind the odd steal.

CF Kane Roskilly (#37), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: City Centre Keys
This season (97 games): .284, 18 HR, 57 RBI, 34 BB, 90 K, 30 SB
Career avg (162 games): .249, 17 HR, 65 RBI, 55 BB, 164 K, 53 SB

Another returnee to the national team, having been a bench pinch-runner on the WBC43 squad. Still has that speed and will to run, and has improved his batting and power somewhat. Has a better arm than York.

RF Andrew MacGeechan (#93), age 33, throws right, bats right. Club: Pardbo Bisons
This season (100 games): .308, 21 HR, 95 RBI, 41 BB, 68 K
Career avg (162 games): .290, 24 HR, 104 RBI, 75 BB, 109 K

Great arm from right field, and can play in left too. Loves finding the gap.

C Nicky Minty (#8), age 22, throws right, bats right. Club: Orean Inner Hawkeyes
This season (LBC, 35 games): .256, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 7 BB, 23 K
This season (AAA, 74 games): .412, 63 HR, 148 RBI, 31 BB, 77 K
Career avg (LBC, 162 games): .247, 32 HR, 105 RBI, 17 BB, 178 K

Decent power. Can't run. Backup catcher.

C Oscar Gauntlett (#12), age 29, throws right, bats left. Club: Olympton Rapiers
This season (91 games): .320, 18 HR, 88 RBI, 19 BB, 50 K
Career (162-game avg): .293, 20 HR, 88 RBI, 48 BB, 53 K

Good catcher with above-average power, but will have to serve as backup for a change after Grainger's storming season.

SS/3B Samuel Oram (#45), age 22, throws right, bats left. Club: Orean Capital Tiger-Cats
This season (100 games): .353, 1 HR, 48 RBI, 36 BB, 24 K, 23 SB
Career avg (162 games): .329, 4 HR, 69 RBI, 36 BB, 49 K, 21 SB

No power. Good contact hitter, having put together two straight years hitting above .350. Can run.

OF Maurice Hagger (#1), age 20, throws left, bats left. Club: Port Cartfort Saboteurs
This season (LBC, 54 games): .256, 7 HR, 32 RBI, 8 BB, 34 K
This season (AAA, 75 games): .361, 40 HR, 91 RBI, 35 BB, 33 K, 15 SB
Career avg (combined, 162 games): .303, 45 HR, 148 RBI, 40 BB, 102 K, 27 SB

Has a bit of speed. Good range in the outfield but needs more experience and will commit the odd error. Has the potential to become a great HR hitter, especially at Port Cartfort.

DH/
OF Billy Savory (#19), age 34, throws right, bats left. Club: Wakeford Capitols
This season (100 games): .299, 32 HR, 84 RBI, 53 BB, 102 K
Career avg (162 games): .258, 43 HR, 118 RBI, 93 BB, 158 K

The DH. Average outfielder defensively and will sit in non-DH games. A pinch-hitter off the bench, but not much more than that.

DH/OF Dermot Rowntree (#57), age 21, throws right, bats right; plays CF if needed. Club: Port Cartfort Saboteurs
This season (97 games): .268, 39 HR, 105 RBI, 42 BB, 115 K, 16 SB
Career (162-game avg): .248, 57 HR, 154 RBI, 45 BB, 189 K, 29 SB

Still only 21. Plus-plus power and speed. Resumes DH duties. Will play CF where the DH is not used.

Starting lineup with DH
1. CF Kane Roskilly
2. 3B David Stelfox
3. LF Ryan Farquharson
4. DH Dermot Rowntree
5. C Finley Grainger
6. 2B Eddie Denve

--‭֎‬-- Summer, Several Months Before WBC 45 --‭֎‬--

Princess Yahia was in Guilin, being wined and dined at the duke's palace. She was on a national tour to spread good will. The next day, she and the duke would bring boxes of toys and steamers full of noodles to an orphanage, where they would feed the children and have a nice feel-good photo-op. But right now, they were at an elegant dining table set with fine Jingdezhen porcelain and the duke's staff were serving them dainty little hors d'ouevres stuffed with goose meat. Yahia liked the Duke of Guilin. He didn't scold her when she got too exuberant or started talking about her favorite baseball players and pop singers. He was friends with Lakpa Fang, the closing pitcher for the Guilin Pangolins and the national baseball team, and he had no trouble holding up his end of the conversation when it came to baseball. They had less in common when it came to music, but he didn't give her a hard time about it.

The servants brought out a beef dish topped with scallions for the next course, and the conversation rambled on. The duke talked about some race track that was the hot new thing in Guilin the last couple years, and a gay rights group that Lakpa Fang was involved with.

There was more food, more talk, some nice wine and baijiu...

As the meal wound down and servants began clearing away empty platters, the duke and the princess found themselves with a quiet moment when no one else was paying attention to them. "Yahia, can I ask you a personal question?" the duke said.

"About what?"

"Are the rumors true about you and Debashish Morrison?"

There was a persistent rumor than Princess Yahia had a crush on Green Sox 3rd baseman Debashish Morrison. It was true, but her parents didn't approve. Being royalty meant there was a lot of scrutiny and a lot pressure to keep up appearances, and Yahia and Morrison had not been able to pursue a relationship.

"It's none of your business!" Yahia said angrily.

The duke shrugged. "The Green Sox are going to be playing in Guilin next week. If the rumors are true, maybe I could pass along a message for you."

Yahia's whole expression changed. "Oh!" she said. "Really? And you won't tell anyone?"

"No, I won't tell anyone."

Corrupt Dictatorship

Hector Chicote was sat in the dugout watching some of his team mates practice their hitting out on the field of the Centro Nacional de Béisbol. Carita, Capmany, Mina, Gonzalez… they were all out there. The pitchers rotated to give them a little bit of variation and the back-up catcher Valentin Aparicio was suited up behind home plate. El Profesor had said it’d be a good idea to get some practice for both those pitching and those hitting, with both mimicking what would happen on game day. Hector thought that it was a little too serious… What if somebody got hit by a wild pitch? They could be out for weeks. It would write off their season, their whole World Baseball Classic gone over the head of an overly realistic practice session. He was happy enough sat in the dugout, relaxing, smoking a cigarette. Later in the season it would be a cigar, but he hadn’t done anything too deserve that yet.

He smirked to himself. Not yet. Hector had been here so many times before, most of them in the Castrollano domestic series, but once before at the start of a World Baseball Classic campaign. He had come to rue the fact that Tierra de Castro had not entered into the competition earlier in his career. He could have had multiple Classics under his belt. As it was this would be his second and final one. He was 39 years of age and he definitely wasn’t getting any younger. He could feel a weariness in his bones that he had never felt before, things were starting to creak and groan like the floorboards of a particularly old house. His knees were sore after every game, his shoulder would click for a couple of days after pitching.

It was better for him to sit out this practice. Well, any practice really. El Profesor had said as much, he wanted Hector to be fit for the important games, able to pitch in the games that mattered. His experience and cunning would come in useful for those sort of games. Plus, the pitching rotation was much stronger this time around. Hector was quietly impressed at the crop of pitchers that had started to come through the ranks in Castrollano baseball. Tejedor could easily take up the mantle Hector would leave behind once he retired. Quesada was excellent too, a reliable pitcher. Zoido had made the step-up from the bullpen this time around and his attention to detail made him a fearsome opponent for any hitter to see on the mound. Then there was Tenorio, the kid from Industriales. Hector wouldn’t normally bother with players from his Marineros’ hated rivals, but the double act of Tenorio and Céspedes in the bullpen made this a difficult rule to stick to. They were a funny pair, likeable kids and Hector couldn’t say a bad word against either of them.

Last time there had been a palpable nervousness around the entire Castrollano team. It was the first time the country had entered international sporting competition and nobody wanted to embarrass the country. The government had deliberated long and hard over whether to send a team and they wanted the players to demonstrate everything good about the country’s political system. All that bullshit, Hector spat on the ground as he thought about it, taking another drag on his cigarette. He didn’t believe it, but the people did. He was just glad that they hadn’t embarrassed themselves. He didn’t want to think about what would have happened to them if they had. Castrollano secret prisons are not the sort of place you want to hang about for long.

But they’d done well, they reached the play-offs and impressed many both at home and abroad. Their playing style, sticking to the basics and working hard endeared the team to many. The team felt comfortable now as a result, they weren’t the new kids on the block anymore and every situation they would now face was something they had done before. Well, unless they progressed past the first round of the play-offs, Hector smiled. He hoped they would get the chance to taste something new by doing so.

Whilst the pressure may have been off for those on the diamond, for the fans and the politicians, expectations were even higher. Everybody had known that Castrollano baseball was of a high standard and they had demonstrated that in their first Classic. Now the challenge was for the team to go even further and demonstrate what many believed: that it was the best. It would be a tough task, many realised that, especially with the more established nations having so much experience at the business end of the tournament. The Castrollano team did not have that, not at international level anyway. Hector grimaced, some people at home certainly would not realise that it was going to be a tough task. The expectations had been raised and many thought that the team should be able to make the step up like that.

If only it were so easy.

Hector wondered what El Presidente made of the team. He had met the man following the team’s elimination after the last Classic, when the team received a heroes’ welcome upon their return to Tierra de Castro. He had shared pleasantries, but he hadn’t said too much. Rumour was that El Presidente was a traditionalist, a fan of track and field and of course, boxing. Hector wagered that he would enjoy the fact the Castrollano team had got one over other, capitalist, nations though.

Hector stubbed out his cigarette, sensing movement behind him. Coach didn’t like him smoking when he was around the team. It wasn’t El Profesor, though, it was young César de la Cavallería. The 18 year old starlet from Estibadores, the Marineros greatest rivals domestically. The two teams were from the same neighbourhood and as a result shared a long intertwined story of animosity going back decades. Hector had tried to put that domestic rivalry aside to help the youngster and he had been quite proud of how well he had done thus far.

“Hey kid.” He croaked, forcing a smile. He had wasted half a cigarette.

“Hello Hector.” César said nervously. He was meeting a legend of Castrollano baseball, a man over twenty years older than him, a man he had heard about on the radio when he listened to commentary of games as a boy. Even if he was a pitcher for his team’s hated rivals, he still had a huge sense of respect for Hector Chicote.

“Had a good day?” Hector asked.

“Yeah, I guess. Reality’s starting to hit me, I think.”

“All this?” Hector smiled, pointing around at the bleachers in the national stadium.

“Yeah.”

“Don’t worry about it son, you belong here, if El Profesor has picked you, you’re good enough.”

“I guess...”

“I promise you kid.” Hector said as César sat down and a slightly awkward silence set in between the pair.

“Hector?” César ventured.

“Yeah?”

“…What’s it like?”

“What?”

“Playing in the World Baseball Classic?” César asked, causing Hector to smile to himself.

“Well…”

Part 2

Bruce blinked himself awake, and stared into space. He pushed himself off the sofa. He rubbed his cheek and could feel the rough stubble of a days growth. He felt his phone in the pocket. He checked it, was out of charge. Bruce felt a brief moment of relief, although he wondered how many messages were waiting for him.

---

Homer Unn sat in his office at 'The Sub' and tried calling Bruce again. It was his fifteenth attempt since the interview. Straight to voicemail. He hungn up.

Homer rocked back in his chair and pulled up the WhoTube video of the interview again. The fifth time he'd watch it. He had managed to stop crying after the third viewing, but the deep sadness remained.

'Do people really think that of me?' He pondered to himself. He looked wind the room... 'I'm so alone.'

He picked up his phone and called Bruce. Sixteenth attempt. Straight to voicemail. He hung up.

A knock came at his office door.

'Come in.'

A vaguely familiar woman entered, 'Mr Unn'

'Homer, please.'

'We need to talk about Bruce'

The pair chatted for close to an hour. The woman thanked Homer for his time and left, with Homer none the wiser as to who she was.

He checked the clock 10:15am. He was late for morning practice.

He scurried down to the batting cages.

Arriving there he found most the team. None appeared to be in uniform or anywhere near ready to practice.

'Why's nobody ready?'

'Bruce isn't here.' Someone called out.

'We can't get in touch with him' came another reply

'Christian, take the training!' Homer called out to Christian Mitchell as he walked away. 'I'm going to find Bruce.'

15 home games, where will they be played?

Round 2: v Oscioru @ The Citadel, Santa Teresa
Round 4: v Hampton Island @ Katashi Dome, Katashi
Round 6: v Carpia @ Uvesaki Field, Echizen
Round 8: v Bulgar Rouge @ Naminaka Park, Schemerdrecht
Round 12: v Oscioru @ Ventovente, Ferrovente
Round 14: v Hampton Island @ Katashi Dome, Katashi
Round 16: v Carpia @ Vidari Stadium, Teragaseki
Round 18: v Bulgar Rouge @ Neptune Stadium, Greencaster
Round 22: v Oscioru @ The Citadel, Santa Teresa
Round 24: v Hampton Island @ Katashi Dome, Katashi
Round 26: v Carpia @ Ginofruit Fiueld, Arakura
Round 28: v Bulgar Rouge @ Apollo Diamond, Aminey

Games against Hampton Island are very high profile games for a group stage, and are therefore played at the larger grounds. Versus Oscioru, a ranked nation, grounds in Finisterre are reserved. Carpia games are played in 'provincial' grounds of Yoshima, and Bulgar Rouge games are played in the 'Western' grounds.

Now, if you're not from Ko-oren, the above paragraph might confuse you. You might be visiting the Dragonfly Archipelago around the WBC group stage, wondering if you could see the Green and Blue in action - if that sounds like you, keep reading.

Baseball's popularity is tied to region. The southeastern islands (there are four: three smaller ones and one large one. On the large one lies the city of Katashi, one of Ko-oren's largest metros) are one such region. The second region is the south/southeastern peninsula of Finisterre. The first region speaks Japanese, the second region speaks a variant of Spanish/Portuguese, but with either of those languages you should be understood. Both these regions are the warmest in Ko-oren, which partially explains its popularity. Then, over time, people from here moved to other large metros in Ko-oren, and as a result all the other metropolises have some sort of baseball following.

So, going back to the first paragraph: as Hampton Island's games are most important and will draw the largest crowds, the huge Katashi Dome in the city will be used. Oscioru will be hosted by the Iberian-speaking peninsula. Carpia will have to go to the Japanese-speaking stadiums on the three smaller islands of the southwest, and lastly Bulgar Rouge will visit the mainland metropolises which have smaller baseball followings. This ensures that every Ko-orenite baseball fan will have a home game played nearby.

Some grounds got snubbed, still. The third largest stadium in the nation hasn't been used: Obsidian Park, in Suvira, in the far southeast. It's a provincial ground, but it's fairly close to Katashi. And that is another big blow to southeastern baseball - but for that, we have to go back two years. There are two professional teams on the eastern side of the island (that is, east of Katashi). One has moved to Schemerdrecht, which doesn't really have a baseball culture (the Intermare Admirals, previously Aviansola Admirals), and the other is still one of the larger teams, has one of the largest stadiums - but on the basis of being 'close' (1,5 hours away) from Katashi, they do not get to host a game. Sure, other stadiums deserve to host as well: with Echizen, Teragaseki and Arakura, every other island besides Katashi's island hosts a game. No matter what, this'll feed into the 'we're on the same island as the city of Katashi so we're f'd' and it'll likely come back in chants during the regular baseball season.

A decent start despite the loss to Ko-oren - which was, however, completely expected. The very participation of a Bulgarian team in a baseball competition was a nuisance. After failing to assemble an Olympic delegation due to extraordinary commitments of athletes to the National People's Liberation Army abroad, the Sports Subcommittee was left with more time and organisational resource than it needed, and very little to invest that into. Apparently someone thought that a foray into a sport that is an iconic representation of the hated capitalist system would seem like original thinking - or a very unusual political (and maybe literal) suicide attempt. Much to that anonymous clerk's surprise, the General Directorate of Physical Education approved the Sports Subcommittee's request to prepare for this event.

Image
It was no easy task even to assemble the team. The coach, Arnaldo Torriente, was a retired Cuban baseball veteran with celebrity status in his home country, but very little coaching experience. The 30 or so men who volunteered had not even heard of this sport before; some quickly gave up when learning that this was a capitalist sport par excellence, fearing future trouble with State Security. But eventually a team was assembled. Training equipment, including the bats, was hastily manufactured by arms factories and mostly of poor quality. But the two months of preparation paid off, and some of the players even began to show leadership skills. As the Democratic Republic had abolished currency, the Second Economic Committee provided some miserable funds to import quality professional gear for the event.

Torriente himself thought that the players were not actually half bad. All of them had great physical fitness due to their NPLA background and healthy, balanced communal diets. The curiosity of getting into something radically new was, surprisingly, making them feel liberated and at ease - there were no expectations so everyone would be doing their absolute best against completely unknown opponents. So far, one victory had been attained, which significantly raised morale. The loss was a bit of a dent, but the general feeling was that of optimism. A difficult game was coming up, and Torriente was about to see if his expectations about stronger and weaker players were about to come true. Regardless of the result, the next match would give valuable feedback of any shuffling needed to be done for the games that would come. The goal of getting out of the group stage still seemed attainable, and everyone was looking forward to it.

--- Braves Open at Shannon Park to Sellout Crowd! ---

| Following a 6-4 opening day victory at Krazinsky Park against the Xanneria Maroons, the Bauscland Braves were met with a sellout crowd as they opened up Shannon's Park's inaugural season with a disappointing loss against seventh ranked Ethane. The players looked confident as they took to the field to the raucous cheers of the over 35,000 fans in attendance. However, Braves' starting pitcher Ben Cantwell struggled, and Ethane was able to quickly able to put up five runs over two innings and leave runners on second and third for Leo Kiely to deal with as he came on in relief. Already down by seven runs going into the bottom of the second, the two runs brought in by singles from Third Baseman Grady Hatton and Right Fielder Micky Haslin helped to temporarily raise the spirits of both those in the Braves dugout and in the stands. It did little to affect the game's outcome though, as Ethane put up another three runs and put the game out of reach for Bauscland. Despite the result, the opening of Shannon Park was deemed a success by the city of Halifax and the Bauscland Braves owner Scott Nagy, who called it "... a resounding success on the part of the [Shannon Park] staff and others who were involved". |

Matchday 3: BYE

| The fourth place Braves go into their next three game stint featuring a road trip to Holy Marsh, followed by a two home stint against Vangaziland and Xanneria. Morale is still high among the players and coaches, who've attributed their 10-3 defeat against Ethane as just part of getting out the early season jitters, but hope to get back on track over the course of these next few games. |

THE ROCKET REPORT

GOOD START

by Brianne Henry,

It is not in the group stage where the new-look Rockets will have their biggest test. We will not know, right now, if this team is championship caliber. With ten groups of five, the top teams in baseball were very well spread out, and the toughest opposition that we drew would be Drawkland. Don’t get me wrong, I like Drawkland. They have great sporting programs, but baseball has been lagging behind. In football, basketball, or soccer, the Drawks need to be feared. On the baseball diamond, this is simply not the case. They are good for a playoff team, and they probably end up second in this group again, although, The Greater Nordics are worthy opposition for them.

Newmanistan is 2-0, now. The teams beaten: Drawkland and The Greater Nordics. We still have not met the unranked teams in the group, but this is why I say, right now, we won’t learn much about this team. Perhaps that is a good thing, as it gives coach Jessica Hedstrom a chance to acclimate herself at this level, and for this group of players to gain some chemistry with one another. There will be 24 games played, and that provides a good amount of time to prepare for the games that matter. Eventually, there will be a good and proven team in the other dugout.

The Rockets opened up the 45th Classic on another planet. That might be the first time that has ever happened, as they took on Drawkland, on Sonnel. The line score at the end of the game, to others, looks like “another ho-hum 6-1 Newmanistan win”. Well, it kind of was. There is no worrying about the ace of this staff, Hannah Lee. She is in her prime right now, and has been part of this team since she was 19 and getting big results. She is expected to be the leader, and the leader she was on opening day. Lee went all nine innings, striking out 13 members of the Bat Corps, allowing just one run (earned), on five hits. Meanwhile, the Rockets were the Rockets with the bat. The top of the first saw two runs scored, thanks to Kelsey Brandis and Ashley Sorenson playing the speed game. Brandis singled, then Sorenson drew a walk. Next would be a double steal. Sydney Hassler and Stephanie Reynolds each flew out, but each time the runners moved up a base, and just like that, 2-0 Newmanistan. Rocket speed does it again. Brandis also led off the third with a single, stole two more bases, and scored on Ashley Sorenson’s single. Ashley then stole two bases and scored on another Sydney Hassler sacrifice fly. After three, 4-0 Newmanistan with five stolen bases. The Rockets added two more on the sixth on a 2-RBI double from Joanne Collins.

Following the game, the Rockets returned home, and met up with The Greater Nordics at the Proving Grounds in Tundra Falls. Newmanistan will utilize 11 home stadiums over the 12 games played (Tundra Falls gets two), and naturally the Proving Grounds is the place to open up. This one was a battle, no doubt about it. In fact, we respect the way the team plays as they also like to steal bases. They must have learned from the Rockets as to how successful that can be. They had early success against Cassie Burke, and led 4-2 after three. Burke remained in the game through the fifth, but an Oscar Christiansen blast over the right field fence sealed her day, and Newmanistan was down, 5-2. Newmanistan needed an early character check, and they got it. Sydney Hassler led off the fifth with a single, and after Stephanie Reynolds was retired, Kenzie Magee drove her in with a double to make it 5-3. Joanne Collins grounded out, but advanced Magee to third. Kenzie scored on a Christine Hansen single, and Hansen scored on a Brittany McDonald double to make it 5-5. The Rockets bullpen shut down the Nordics, not allowing another hit for the rest of the game, something that was a pleasant sight to see as getting to our bullpen is often key #1 on the opponent’s bucket list of “How to beat the Rockets”. Stephanie Reynolds homered with two outs and no one on in the sixth, and the Rockets got another long ball in the seventh, this from Christine Hansen. The end result, a 7-5 Newmanistan win. Katrina Payne earned a save and Alyssa Wolcott was credited with the victory.

Newmanistan was off on MD3, and will fly to Evaropi for the next match. Madison Sullivan will make her first career World Baseball Classic start in the game. Then its home to Cheergirls in Jessicaville, and home to Drawkland in Loudon. The veteran Shannon Kelly and rookie Paige Norwood are the starting pitchers for those games.
Six-time World Baseball Classic Champions
Now just here to run NSSCRA. Thank you to the community for all the fun in other sports.

Princess Yahia had been looking for excuses to go to Guilin as often as she could, and her parents were beginning to wonder about it.

The Empress invited Yahia's friend Lady Meheruba to tea so she could ask what they did on their trips to Guilin. Meheruba spoke of leisurely boat rides on the Li River, visiting caves with the duke, picnics on hilltops overlooking scenic villages and terraced rice fields... They had seen Lakpa Fang and his wife a couple of times, and some other local celebrities. Meheruba didn't think there was anything inappropriate going on between Yahia and Fang. Wherever Lakpa Fang was invited, Aicha Fang was invited too.

The duke had invited some musicians to entertain them and dine with them. They had gone to a sumo match. Meheruba showed the Empress pictures of them posing with the wrestlers, having fun with the difference between the slender figures of the noblewomen and big bulky bodies of the men.

"Yahia wants to go to Guilin this weekend for the Guangxi Telecom 400, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea," Meheruba said. "I'm afraid something like that might attract unsavory characters."

"What is it?" the Empress asked. "I've never heard of it."

"It's a rat-eaters' racing club that somehow turned into an international event," Meheruba explained. "They've got a proper track and security and everything, but it still attracts a lot of riff-raff. There are rumors that some of the drivers have ties to the Vannish mob, and another one is a drag queen who might be having a homosexual affair with Lakpa Fang. Fang put up a lot of money to help him get his racing career off the ground, and well..." She pulled up another picture. "This is them."

"It doesn't sound like any place for a princess," said the Empress. "I'll tell Yahia she can go to Guilin some other weekend if she wants to visit the duke. Do you think the duke is courting her?"

"I don't know," said Meheruba. "They certainly get along, but I am not sure if there is any romance between them or just a friendship."

"Hmm..." said the Empress. "If they are in love, there isn't any reason not to allow it. He is a bit old for her, but he is still a duke. I just wish Yahia would tell me what is going on."

--‭֎‬-- Syangboche, Game 1 --‭֎‬--

Princess Yahia was excited that she would get to see Debashish Morrison. They had exchanged several letters, using the Duke of Guilin as a go-between, but it had been a while since they had managed to talk face-to-face.

Of course, they both had other things on their minds too. Morrison needed to make sure he was ready to play if Sarang Oli decided to put him in the game.

For her part, Yahia had told her parents she was going to spread goodwill by greeting the Lisanderian team and welcoming them to the Empire. It was their first time playing in the Sherpa Empire, and she thought they might appreciate the show of respect. She went to the ballpark all decked out in fine silk and accompanied by a gaggle of noble ladies, and set aside some time before the game to shake hands with the black-clad Lisanderians and exchange pleasantries. She gave them tidy little gift boxes of high-quality teas, osmanthus candies, and aged chhurpi.

Yahia also threw out the ceremonial first pitch, which landed in the dirt. Much as she loved baseball, she wasn't terribly athletic and her clothes were not practical for pitching. Everyone politely kept their mouths shut about her crappy pitching while Mingma Al Ali took the mound and Yahia went to her seat.

She winked and waved to Debashish Morrison as she made her way past the dugout.

Ali proved to be a much better pitcher than Princess Yahia, throwing 7 scoreless innings before handing the ball over to the tall and gangly Luochong Zhuang. The bats were surprisingly quiet, with a solo homer by Seojun Sherpa being the only run in the first 7 innings. A wind was blowing in from the outfield, streaking the sky with ragged chains of clouds and knocking down balls that would have normally gone out of the park. In the 8th inning, the Lisanderian bullpen kind of fell apart. Maybe Secondat was struggling with nerves because he didn't have much experience pitching against this quality of hitters, but whatever the reason, the Sherpas were able to put together a string of hits and what had been a tense 1-0 pitchers' duel instead became a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Yahia and Morrison chatted and flirted as much as they could get away with, but they were conscious of Lady Meheruba and Sarang Oli giving them dirty looks when their flirting got too obvious.

The blue-haired body-painted fans sitting behind Princess Yahia and her ladies didn't help matters either. One of them managed to spill their beer on the princess when he went diving after a foul ball. The fans were very embarrassed and immediately apologized, but her dress was still going to need a good thorough cleaning.

With a new Manager and coach at the helm of the West Phoenician Confederates and a peppering of seasoned players mixed with new players the first few games would give The Confederates are good indication of how they would stand.
They had a horrible time at the Summer Olympics Games in Republica failing to progress from their pool. After winning the 44th edition of the World Baseball Classic, it was a slap in the face and taught the team a quick lesson; one cannot rest on this previous wins to skate through.

The Confederates began their season in game two, after receiving a bye for the first game. It was an away match in Lisander. Played at the Aomori Park Stadium. Many fans were left shattered due to the limited seating space.
The Confederates made it loud and clear from the top of the 1st inning that they were here and they were here to win. Glen Melbourne and Jack Navy each scored a run. With 2 outs and Glen Melbourne on 3rd base; Jack scored a home run that allowed both to touch the home plate.

At the top of the second Jack Navy smacked away a fast ball to land on second base, while Kevin Dances brought him home. The Lisander pitchers knocked the next two players out before Wayne Sorbent smacked the ball into left field. Kevin Dances touched the home plate but Wayne Sorbent was run out on his pursuit to reach 2nd base.
Emanuel Army scored the last run for the Confederates on day two at the top of the 6th. The only run that got past the Confederates defence was at the bottom of the third, by 1st baseman
Ricardo Rios whose powerful hit landed him on third base, he slid home after a hunt from
Matsumori.

Game three had the Confederates playing on their home turf against Vaeruio. Empress Cleopatra-Olympias was in the royal stand. It was a packed stadium being the first home game. The West Phoenicians dominating the stands 20 to 1.
Vaeruio scored the first victory of the day, at the top of the first with a home run leaving the Confederates startled, as an unranked and new team they were not prepared for the techniques and tactics of a new group. The Confederates were quick to show the new team one needs to be careful of how they played with the Confederates as they would not settle for a defeat on their home turf.
Glen Melbourne and Lukas Towers each scored a run at the bottom of the third. Jack Navy and Emanuel Army scored at the bottom of the 4th and Heniel Hewett scored the last run of the day at the bottom of the 8th. Landed the Confederates their second win out of two games.

It was an amazing start from an amazing team, as winners of the previous World Baseball Classic they had alot to prove to show the win was not a fluke but they have now stood up and were not a team to underestimate.

Royals Start Warm

The VannBank FieldHutt was alive once again with the sounds of baseball. The amusement park outside of the domed stadium was packed as Vangaziland welcomed Holy Marsh to North Emeros. The stadium was in the middle of a tightly packed grid of skyscrapers. The timing worked out so that many fans met the tail end of rush hour. Brightly colored Vannish cars lined up to crawl past the stadium.

Royals' baseball has been known for aggressive hitting and a lineup of pitchers capable of stepping up. The FieldHutt was sold out. Bleachers were tightly packed and the 'standing room only' tickets were gone. Holy Marsh was unranked. Baseball fans still wanted to see the new Vannish team. The roster saw quite a few changes during the offseason.

One of them most notably came in the pitching rotation. Nate Henli put up an ERA of 4.50 against Equestrian States in WBC 44. The Royals tied that series 3-3. Henli even helped Vangaziland win two games with a score of 4-3. This was a decent performance in some ways. "We simply chose to go a different route", Coach Don Haverly said about the roster move. "This season's four pitcher rotation will give us a great chance to develop Miss Sawa with international hitters." There is a chance the Tainese-Vangazi might appear in early long relief situations as well.

Rich Kendrix was starting on the mound. Ths would be the second season in a row he would face an unranked team. Kendrix had a 4-2 record last season. It was a winning record, though Jamaal Edlund did better at 5-1 against an unranked team. "After seeing Henli leave, I know my job is on the line", Kendrix said before his game.

Rich showed up strong. He made it 7 innings until he ran into trouble. There were Holy Marsh runners on first and second. The Esportivan pitching coach, Juan M. Sanchez sprinted out of the dugout after seeing signs of anxiety in Kendrix. A big hit was seemingly imminent. The Royals fought a close game to the late 3-0 lead. Juan Secada subbed in from the bullpen to pitch the rest of the 7th and 8th. His change-up helped get the Royals out of trouble in a long 7th inning.

Manny Mathissen pitched the 9th to close. A few early hits gave Vangaziland the 3-0 win. Late in the 1st inning, new 1B Frank Gunnarson was on second. He attempted to lead slightly, though he couldn't time a full attempt at a stolen base. Veteran Chuck Endo was at bat. His first pitch sailed backwards and up into the net for a foul ball. The next pitch was a ball which sailed fairly wide. A challenge of a pitch was sent into Endo's zone.

The Vannish shortstop connected to send the ball over the familar right field wall of the FieldHutt. The Vangazi cheered for the early strike.

Vangaziland's final score of the game came in the 3rd inning. Catcher Dave Trancer was up to bat. He has shadowed the Royals as a reserve player, only having three international games to his career. The 29 year old likely only has a few seasons to make his international mark. He chewed bright neon yellow bubble gum at bat, popping a bubble each time the catcher caught a pitch.

With 2 strikes and a ball, Trancer connected with a low pitch. The next time he popped a bubble of Tubular gum, he was on second base. Runners Lindahl and Garon advanced. Garon moved from 1st to 3rd as the ball bounced off the left field wall. One sentence cannot express how hard Garon ran to make it to third. The catcher brought Dave Lindahl home with the RBI double.

Pitching would tighten up to close down the Royals for the rest of the game. There were several close situations. The Vangazi just couldn't capitalize. Royal pitching pulled off a shutout to give the Vangazi the 3-0 win. The Vangazi had a BYE on matchday 2. They next played at Xanneria on Matchday 3.

Vannish batters would set the tone of the game with an early run once again. Dave Lindahl found himself with the bases loaded in the 1st. Kelderssen and Edlund were the two outs. Lindahl managed a line drive single, which skipped past the second baseman. Garon struck out on the next play with a winding swing.

The 2nd inning was even better for the Royals. Once again, steady hitting saw the bases loaded. The Vangazi were making things rough for Xanneria's starting pitcher. Frank Gunnarson and Leo Rehnquist hit RBI singles back to back. Things could have spiraled out of control. Luckily, the pitcher was up again. Edlund connected with the ball only to send a bouncing ground ball to the third baseman.

Vangaziland's offense continued into the 3rd inning. Dave Trancer hit a double to send Lindahl to 3rd. Trancer popped bright neon yellow bubbles as he watched from second. The only veteran left on the outfield roster, Mack Akoye, connected with a pitch to hop it just between the zones of the infield and outfield. The ball wasn't quite a line drive or fly ball. Instead it maintained a short arc.

Lindahl had to really run to beat the throw. A comparison of past rosters would show the Vangaziland Royals are leaner than ever before. The team stepped up conditioning requirements over the offseason. Vangaziland's two heaviest sluggers were recently replaced. Lindahl and Rehnquist bring plenty of strength. They are much faster players, which should help on both sides of the diamond.

Jamaal Edlund faired better on the mound than he did at bat. The dark skinned Vangazi gave up 1 run in the 4th inning. He stepped up to pitch himself out of a situation with runners on first and third base to finish the 4th inning. Edlund's best pitch is his curveball. He managed to catch the Maroons off guard just enough to close out each inning. Xanneria gave the Royals several challenging situations. Things looked rough in the 7th for Vangaziland's opponent.

A short skip of a ball reached Chuck Endo's outstretched glove. He zipped a throw to Kelderssen at second base. Pete caught the ball while sprinting and had to jump into a spin to turn around. Using the momentum, he threw the ball hard to Gunnarson at first. Pitching coach Sanchez let Edlund finish out the 7th. After several tense at-bats, Gunnarson got the third out

Manny Mathissen was called in for the bottom of the 8th. The closer stared down the first batter of the inning, eyes locked onto his. Trancer flashed signals while chewing on his favorite gum. The closer's fastball beat the batter for a nasty strikeout. It included a foul ball and one terrible ball Manny pitched. The ball seemed to get away from him as Trancer stood to make the catch.

Manny's next throw sped threw the middle, the fastest of the night. The Maroons fought hard to pull off a late rally. Vangaziland's infield was full of energy after a game which went relatively quickly. Mathissen also pitched a strong game in the 9th to end the game.

The Royals had what it took to snatch a 4-1 victory. Vangaziland is now 2-0 with a +6 run differential. It's a great start for a team looking to break onto the next level. Del Bjornberg takes the mound when the Royals face their toughest group opponent in the Capital. The FieldHutt will be packed when Ethane comes to town.

Vangaziland's best pitcher managed a 3.69 ERA against Cassadaigua last season. It wasn't neccesarily the lowest on the team, but it was a good average considerin he faced the tough Dagan team. He will hope to show improvement against another tough series. "My head is in the game", said Del. "This is going to be a good season. Ethane will be a challenge. We can fight. I can pitch."

Pitching Coach Juan Manuel Sanchez also spoke on Del. "We won't let him try to pitch himself out of trouble as much this season", said the coach. "This will mean a tougher workload for the relievers."

The Royals look to continue their current form. "I think we can still get more from our bats", said Pete Kelderssen. Although he made several key defensive plays, Pete only hit 1-4 tonight. "When other players cool down at bat, we still have people that can step up. I can basically only improve."

Kelderssen's slump has several analysts worried. Others argue that this is 'just baseball'. The Empire is tuned into one of the fastest growing sports in domestic interest.

Stadium: Archbishop Stadium
Stadium Location: Londinium (capital), Newfoundland and Labrador
Stadium Capacity: 35,000

Archbishop Stadium is the home stadium of the Londinium Capitols as well as the Nova Anglican national team. It is big and it plays big, with a serious nighttime marine layer, an enormous right-center gap known as "Triples Alley" and an imposing right field wall. It's not as hard on right-handed hitters, but is a fly ball pitcher's paradise. Many people are seen in the bay outside of the stadium attempting to catch home runs hit into the water or simply cruising the bay while enjoying the sound of the game on the radio.

Starting Rotation (order as given)
RHP #44 Damon Singleton, 34 - fastball at 92-96, peaks at 98; very good slider out-pitch; change-up is okay, good control
LHP #20 Darren Lawson, 33 - primary pitch is a cutter at 92-93, also has a big curve, a sweet changeup, and a decent slider; good control and strikeout numbers
RHP #36 Ben Clayton, 31 - combines 96 MPH fastball with 81 MPH hammer curveball, developed a decent change and slider, strikes out a ton and walks a ton
LHP #19 Nate McLaughlin, 31- fastball 90-92, with sharp curve and sweeping slider, tricky changeup as well
RHP #56 Damian Ryan, 31 - plus fastball at 93-95 with a good curveball, decent changeup and fringy slider; definite punch-out ability, but needs to get motion and walks under control; tall, slim frame

Bullpen
LHP #57 Thomas Wagner, 34 - tall and solidly built at 6'5, 220 pounds; 91 MPH fastball is only average, but has a good curveball and screwball, changeup and cutter are league average as well
LHP #48 Clay Wilkerson, 26 - three-pitch guy, 93-95 MPH fastball, 86 MPH changeup, 80 MPH 12-6 curve
LHP #46 Ricky Bass, 27 - lefty specialist with a submarine release, sweeping slurve is his best pitch
RHP #38 Charlie Bowers, 26 - fastball/curveball guy, can really pump it in there, averages 98 and can reach back for 101
RHP #16 Wyatt Templeton, 26 - starter will be unleashed in short stints for the NT, Murray wants to use him as an Andrew Miller/Josh Hader type, 97 with run on the fastball as a reliever, changeup and curveball with slider as the kill pitch
RHP #11 Matthew Drake, 33 - combines 95 MPH fastball with 80 MPH changeup, decent curve,
RHP #30 Lee Bradley, 33 - fastball 87-88 with a good amount of run, sharp slurve at 82 plus a decent changeup; submarine arm angle gets him a lot of outs, but stuff is legit
RHP #43 Casey Burke, 34 - former 9th round draft pick has burst on to the scene for Newfield, 150/48 K/BB ratio in 118 innings over past two years, fastball at 94-96, great changeup at 82, pretty decent hook as well
RHP #23 Nick Christensen, 32 - failed starter, but posted otherworldly 1.13 ERA last year as a reliever, combines 98 MPH fastball with 88 MPH slider

C #51 Max Pope, 30, (S/R) - whiz defensively behind the plate, upped his power in the past couple of seasons and has a great eye
C #18 Chris Floyd, 33, (R/R), - great bat for a catcher but still struggles with taking walks and avoiding strikeouts; good arm behind the plate but not very mobile, game-calling skills better now
C #60 Trevor Goodwin, 24, (L/R) - strong arm and mobile behind the plate, could be a 15/15 guy and hit .280

1B #21 Jake Bryan, 28, (L/L) - Bryan is a polished player who consistently challenges for MVP, great eye, superb defender, natural hitter with good power, speed and arm are below-average
3B #26 Marc Dufors, 24, (L/R) - can really pick it at the hot corner with a strong arm, streaky hitter whose in-game power has grown
SS #11 Luke Mills, 21, (S/R) - former #1 overall pick out of high school made his major league debut this year, outstanding fielder, but his hit tool has really taken off, good power for a SS, a national team fixture for years to come, coaches hope
2B #6 Tommy Moran, 25, (R/R), - slick fielder who can handle any infield position besides 1B, hits for average, takes walks, and steals bases, not much power to speak of, but a valuable player
CI #50 Cal Stephens, 26, (S/R) - switch-hitter hits well enough with gap-to-gap power, but his calling card is his defense, plays a mean 3B, but can definitely handle first as well
IF #25 Casey Wheeler, 27, (R/R) - late bloomer makes his first NT, has broken out last two seasons, 10/30 guy with amazing defensive versatility (including OF)

OF #27 Ryan Glover, 32, (R/R) - 6-4, 225 pound frame, collects doubles in bunches with decent homers; strikeouts and walks galore; excellent defender and great arm
OF #35 Matthew Gilbert, 23, (S/L) - combines blazing speed with good range, a power bat, and a strong arm, still needs to boost his average and take a few more walks
OF #29 Moses Deng, 32, (S/R) - speed is 80 on the 20-80 scale, arm is above-average, hit tool is average, fielding is above-average, power is below average
OF #24 Cliff Garner, 22, (L/L) - Garner is all about the three true outcomes (homers, walks, and strikeouts), poor range but good arm, not an awful LF, but he's here for his hit tool, mostly
OF #40 Ricard Lavoie, 29, (S/L) - Lavoie is a speedster who stole 65 bases to lead the league, excellent defender and can hit .300, though without a good OBP, will be pinch-runner, defensive replacement, and can step in if there is an injury

Staff:

Manager: Graham Steadhall
Ever since the national team won the World Baseball Classic, it has been downhill from there. The state of the Ethanian national team has got so dismal that for the first time since the start of the nation's time in the tournament, Ethane is now ranked outside the top ten in the World Baseball Classic rankings. Lockie, while he brought good fortune to begin with, had lost his magic spark in the team, so one of the more left-field options has been brought in to try to change the culture in the club. Graham Steadhall leads one of the local-run baseball clubs in Ethane and is well-known for being a tough manager, which is what is seen to be needed for the national team. He won't be their friend; he'll probably be their enemy, but he views it that when that is the case he is doing his job right. It's hoped he can instill a sense of discipline into the side.

The McTidley arena is the baseball arena recently commissioned after the IBS X by the government, as they felt even though not many baseball games take place in Ethane, that we ought to have a baseball arena in Ethane for those times when we would be playing home matches. The McTidley arena is named after the teacher who tried to set up a baseball league in the humorous reality tv show, ''But it's Baseball'', which ran from 2003-2005, and attracted an average of 3 million viewers an episode in its first 2 series. This stadium has recently been expanded with the increasing popularity of baseball in Ethane, and now can hold around 20,000 spectators and is currently operated by the EBA (Ethane Baseball Association).

The Children in Blueberry Class were asked to write about baseball today.

Issac, 8
I watched a baseball game the other day. I saw the team in New Sarum. It was very cool. The team I like won the game, which was very good because the other team winning would be very sad. But the other team were sad, so I did feel bad for them. They were not as good as my team, which is why they did not win. I hope that one day, I can see the big tournament, the WBC, in Ethane. It would be amazing to see them play against Newmenistan Newmanistan in Ethane. It would be really fun, and I think my Daddy would take me to see them play. Baseball isn't my favourite sport though. My favourite sport is cricket. But baseball is my second favourite sport.

Ezekiel, 9
One day, I want to be a professional baseball player. I saw the people playing baseball on tv. They were playing some other country, and it looked really fun. Our country won by a lot though, because Ethane obviously has the best baseball team in the world. I would like to play for Ethane one day. I know that playing for Ethane is really hard because you have to be really good at baseball, but I would like to do that. I wouldn't mind playing cricket or football, but I think baseball is more fun. I wish there was a baseball team at our school, but there isn't. Apparently, baseball isn't popular enough. It's unfair and it makes me upset. I want to play baseball at school, but we don't even do it in P.E. But one day all my life I will be playing baseball so I guess it doesn't matter now.

Sarah, 9
Baseball is a boring sport. I don't understand why people enjoy it. It is very slow, and very boring. I am glad I never have to play it, because I would get very bored. My dad took me to see a game once, and it lasted forever. And it went really slowly. I wish I didn't go. I almost fell asleep during the game because it was so boring. So I never want to hear about baseball or watch it or play it, ever. It is a stupid sport.

Jane, 9
I don't understand how baseball works. It should be very simple, but for some reason I can't understand it. Can anyone explain how baseball works because I don't know. And I like baseball. But I can't play it because I don't understand it. Can someone teach us how to play it please.

Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Tierra de Castro » Mon Jan 28, 2019 5:58 pm

El Profesor smiled to himself. This was some team he had on his hands. It may be early days in the season, but he could just tell. When he looked from man-to-man in the locker room, he knew, this team had something special about them. The camaraderie was like a National Series winning team and he had coached a few of them in his days with the Marineros domestically. The quality of some of the players was truly world class too, when he racked his brains he struggled to think of a finer catcher than Adan Carita. He could do it all. There were others too, although Adan was undoubtedly the star man.

An opening day win over the Federation of Spokane eased everyone’s nerves, the 5-1 score was well deserved and represented how the two teams played. Quesada had pitched in the group opener and had done a fine job, changing for Snoopy Martinez following the 7th inning. Quesada may have conceded one run during the game, but he had pitched well otherwise, allowing only the home run hit and one other during his session on the mound. Martinez pitched out and secured the victory utilising his monstrous fastball. The unranked Spokane team struggled with Martinez’s pitches, the pure speed was perhaps something they weren’t used to. International baseball is a steep learning curve after all.

The hitters had done just as well during the group opener, El Profesor’s golden boy Adan Carita hitting a home run to bat-in himself and lead-off man Facundo Mina. Juan Esteban Capmany had gotten in on the act later in the game, not to be outdone by his best friend (and domestic team mate), he hit a monster home run of his own. El Profesor had been quick to warn of complacency following the game. Not every game would be like this and they had to ensure that they were just as motivated for this type of game, against an unranked nation, as they would be for games against Scootalove City and Equestrian States. It wouldn’t be easy, but if they weren’t on top form in every game they wouldn’t achieve their objective.

Edgar Abasto had been ambitious at every step when he had taken the national team head coach role. He had said that he would qualify for the play-offs during the team’s debut tournament and he had achieved it. He had said that his team would top their group ahead of their second tournament and this was exactly the start he had wanted in pursuit of that goal. It would be hard, especially with a team like Scootalove City in the group and Equestrian States were no slouches either, but he had to be ambitious. The quality of baseball in Tierra de Castro warranted such ambition. The players were good enough, so if he wasn’t ambitious enough he would be doing them a disservice. Understating their quality wasn’t an option. They were good enough to go deep in the World Baseball Classic.

To do that, topping your group was the first priority. The luck of the draw in the play-offs made topping your group key, as you would more often than not end up with a favourable tie and it made progressing further that little bit easier. So he made that the team’s number one objective. If they managed that the objective would become progression to the next round of the play-offs and it would step up if they got any further. El Profesor was all about attainable targets and he felt that this was more than attainable. The players showed they could do it, so now they had to fulfil their side of the bargain and keep that kind of form up.

The second game demonstrated just why they could do it. Faced with Scootalove City, ranked #9 in the world, Hector Chicote stepped up onto the mound and pitched a near perfect game. He allowed two hits and managed 12 strikeouts as he shutout Scootalove City, purported to be one of the best teams in the world. The 39 year old used every trick he had and he demonstrated his ability. El Profesor wished he was a bit younger. Chicote could have become one of the best of all-time if he could play a couple more Classics.

As it was, this would be his last one. The two had had a chat about the matter and they were both on the same page. The understanding was there between the two. Chicote, known as El Zorro due to his cunning and wily pitching intelligence, was a wise man, even if he didn’t always show it. When people talked of things as black and white, El Profesor now understood what it meant to be grey, inhabiting that space in between the two, because that is exactly where Hector Chicote was from. He was a deep character, a multifaceted personality and one hell of a pitcher. El Profesor counted himself lucky to work with the guy.

He had seen him speaking to young César de la Cavallería a couple of days prior to the group opener and a weird sense of pride had washed over him. A younger Hector Chicote would not have done that. He had matured and El Profesor could perhaps count himself as a small part in that gradual change. He hoped that he would join the coaching staff with the national team following his retirement, he could prove invaluable. His experience as a player would be great when talking to youngsters who were on the team for the first time.

El Profesor hadn’t said anything to Hector about it, but he could actually see him being the head coach of the national team one day. He had generated the temperament for the job over the years, a much younger Hector Chicote definitely wouldn’t have suited the role, but this more mature, calmer version… Well, he was almost perfectly suited to it.

That was for another day though, they had enjoyed a nice rest day whilst the other teams played on the third match day of the group stage. Next up was the unranked Trive 38, a potential banana skin. They’d have to be watchful, who knew if Trive 38 could be the next Tierra de Castro and burst on the scene successfully in their debut tournament? El Profesor would have to be careful in his coaching decisions. He would allow Orlando Tenorio to pitch his first ever World Baseball Classic game. Tenorio was ready to step up.

El Profesor hoped Orlando would repay the faith he had in him.

Part 3

Homer arrived at Bruce's apartment building. There was still a small gathering of paparazzi outside, although the fast moving Beepeean news cycle had already moved onto other scandals.

'Let me past', Homer demanded as a photographer blocked his way. 'Has he come out yet?', he asked another.

'Haven't seen him' came a reply as he headed into the foyer. He was met by the buildings security doorman, wearing a long green jacket with golden lapels. Homer clocked the name badge, "Bob".

'Bob,' Homer began putting on a commanding voice, 'Let me into apartment 704', he demanded.

'Im afraid I can't do that'

'You can, and you will. The occupant may be in distress. Do you know who I am?'

'Yes, Mr Unn.... I guess if you believe Bruce, I mean, Mr Labare, may be in harm.... let me get my keys".

Bruce let out a small sigh of relief, before straightening up again to command his space as Bob came scurrying back.

'This way' Bob ushered them to the lift. They ride together in silence. Arriving at Bruce's apartment, Homer banged on the door.

'Bruce, it's Homer open up."

Inside, Bruce had lain back on the sofa and rolled over and pulled the pillow over his head. 'Go away!' he whimpered, not loud enough for anyone to hear.

Homer banged on the door again, with still no response. He ordered Bob to open the door.

'Mr Labare, we're coming in' Bob yelled twisting the key in the lock.

As the door opened. Bruce reverted to the foetal position. 'Go away!' He whispered again.

Homer walked over and pulled the pillow from Bruce. 'Get up! You're late for practice. Do you want to let your teammates down?' Homer ranted.

'No, I..... what?', Bruce replied.

Homer leant down beside the Bruce whispered, 'Get up, get your training kit, and let's go.'

Bruce nodded and began to stir himself from the sofa.

'Thank you Bob, he's fine. I'll take it from here', Homer dismissed Bob, who scurried back out of the apartment.

Bruce was now sitting up on the sofa and Homer plonked himself down beside him.

'You're alright?' Homer asked.

Bruce nodded, looking at the ground

'Good. I am too. Let's get your stuff, we can talk in the car.'
