"That all sounds good. Maybe mask it a little by throwing in Beijing, Moscow, Pyongyang, Tehran, Caracas, and Damascus. That way Hanoi cannot see it as an attack directed solely at them. As much as I hate to admit it, Vietnam is a counter to Chinese influence in the region and certain measures must be taken to preserve that relationship. In fact, let's put all authoritarian regimes on that list. All the world's dictators will know that America will not stand for their human rights abuses.

Sydney nodded in agreement. "And none mentioned are American allies except Vietnam...."

She paused when she heard the Senator speak about targeting all authoritarian regimes. "Ambitious, though your colleagues in Congress would probably give the same argument about other countries that you just gave about Vietnam. No one would object to targeting Pyongyang, Tehran, or Caracas, but may object to target Riyadh or Manila. Perhaps it would be better to start with those regimes you've named, assuming there are not human rights sanctions on them already, and have clear criteria for adding others to the list in the future."

"Agreed. Any other ideas?"

Sydney nodded in agreement. "And none mentioned are American allies except Vietnam...."

Jason Samara Campaign Stop #5

Samara was in high spirits, he hadn’t gotten polling back since his campaign started but he was confident the results would be good. The confidence was unlike him, since the fall of Winston he had learned to temper his hopes and expectations but for once things were looking up. He had the support of the establishment in the Democratic Party, the DNC, Leader Stafford, the Johnsons… all powerful allies and while he wished to get the support of others still it was a great start.

Samara would leave Middlesex County and head to Norfolk County, specifically Brookline, the hometown of JFK. Samara treated the trip as a pilgrimage visiting the JFK national Historic Site in Coolidge Corner taking the 30 minute tour and taking the 45 minute neighborhood walk with the tour guide. He had been here before years ago but made sure to ask many questions about the community and how it developed historically since JFK was born there.

Afterwards he took a late day service at St Aidan’s church, speaking with the church leaders and shaking hands with the elderly who attended the service. Following the church service Samara took a long walking route to the location of his rally which he held as the sun was setting. This time he was greeted to small but strong chant of “SA-MAR-A!”

“Good Morning! What a crowd, it’s really an honor to be here thank you all for coming and for the warm welcome.”

“I’m Congressman Jason Samara, I am a man raised in Boston, Massachusetts. I grew up walking the Freedom trail, I grew up watching the South End of Boston go from dangerous and remote in the 80s flourish, I grew up jogging along the Charles river and rooting for the Red Sox. But I was born to two loving parents in Puerto Rico, my father was an immigrant and a psychiatrist, my mother was a social worker who devoted her life to helping people get back on their feet. When I was 2 my father passed away in an car accident and my mother took me to Boston to live with her mother. Times were hard, money was short, we relied on family, community and at times the government to get by. I am a product of public school, I grew up hearing stories of my family that fought for civil rights, of my uncles that marched next to Doctor King, who stood on the bridge at Selma, who marched on Washington and I took that to heart.”

“I dedicated my life and schooling to community outreach and service, I married my high school sweetheart and we have beautiful daughters. I was elected to Congress in 2010 becoming the first African American to represent the state, I have fought for welfare reform, consumer protections, providing affordable college and healthcare, LBGTQ rights, a woman’s right to choose and housing reform. I proudly stand by the work I have done for this state. As a Congressman I proudly voted against the RLSA, WAC and BBA. My parents and my grandmother are no longer with us today, but I know they look down on our work with pride.”

I stand for no PACs just people, I have pledged to no longer accept donations from corporate PACs, this is just the first step in Comprehensive Campaign Finance Reform that is necessary for our growing Democracy. I stand for the scientific consensus that Climate Change is real, and that we must take steps to build a clean energy economy to make fuel and energy cheaper, better for the environment and free of our dependency on foreign countries.”

“I stand for those who serve are nation in uniform, and making sure that when they return to civilian life we are there to support them in the challenges they face. I stand for Expanding medical care and support services for our service members is a moral duty.”

“I stand for Universal Healthcare, Health Care is a Human Right, a moral responsibility. I will fight to make sure that insurance companies no longer turn people away for pre-existing conditions or discriminate against women. I will work hand in hand with our governor to craft and support a healthcare plan that covers all of Massachusetts so it can continue to be the national leader in coverage and innovation.”

“I stand for Equal Pay for Equal Work. An economy that works for everyone, a $15 minimum wage, affordable childcare, parental leave. No one who works full time should live in poverty and its time big business and the 1% paid its fair share.”

“I stand for LGBTQ equality, I go to Boston’s Pride Parade every year, I marched in DC and spoke on LGBTQ rights and progress. I will stand against any attempt to take away our progress, LGTBQ rights are human rights and we need an equality act to ban discrimination against LGBTQ individuals in employment, housing and other areas.”

“I stand for A God Given Right to Safety, the Minutemen Act showed that Congress cares more about handouts to Gun Manufacturers than safety for our people, and across the country children are paying the price. Gun Violence plagues our communities every day and as your Senator I will fight back against the epidemic, thoughts and prayers are not enough we need action to take dangerous weapons off our streets and out of the hands of dangerous individuals.”

“Close the Loopholes, lets tell American companies that if they want to benefit from our laws and our protection they need to bring those profits home. We need a fairer economy because the market the republicans claim is ‘free’ is just a game with loaded dice. We have seen wall street billionaires declare bankruptcy a half dozen times and get bailed out, but someone who can’t afford to pay a speeding ticket goes to jail. IT’S A RIGGED GAME. “

“Since 1978 CEOs have gotten paid over 900% more, workers are 65% more productive and they get 9% more. When America’s workers play a rigged game we all lose, when unions get busted and workers can’t organize? We lose... and when you don’t give people a livable wage we all lose. Basic decency and sound economics both bring you to the same conclusion: IT’S A RIGGED GAME thats why it’s time to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.”

“But if we are really going to create permanent lasting change we MUST support education. Now i’m not supporting teaching our kids how to better answer a multiple choice question on a test. I want to build real strong communities around schools, have teachers who are well-trained motivated and LOVE what they do. I want schools and teachers that really prepare our children not just for college but for life. We need to treat teachers with the respect they deserve and like the professionals they are!”

“The average student graduates with over $35,000 in debt, I want to make sure that every student gets the opportunity to go to college and that they can go to community college for free and when a student borrows money to go to college they get low rates.”

“The ACA was not perfect, it could have been improved BUT I would take the ACA over having tens of millions without healthcare, without a net, where the only time they see a doctor is in the emergency room. We must continue to improve healthcare, making sure coverage is truly universal and held to the highest standards. I will work hand in hand with our governor to get the best possible healthcare after the RLSA until we can finally repeal it.”

“Everybody deserves affordable healthcare, nobody should have to choose between filling a grocery cart or a prescription jar. The Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other programs that allow people to retire with dignity, that gives survivor benefits to their partners and families…. These are programs I will fight tooth and nail to defend, to make sure Social Security is there for you. It’s the least we can do.”

“As we make peoples healthcare secure let us also secure our communities…. Mass Shootings capture headlines, but daily tragedies we see in towns and cities across the nation are just as tragic. Thirty Thousand Americans are killed by gun violence every year, the madness must end. I have given my thoughts and prayers to victims too many times but as great man once said ‘when you pray move your feet’. We need to move, we need to realize that we have options and ways to bring down gun violence without dismantling the second amendment which I respect. Ways to ensure criminals, terrorists and other dangerous individuals don’t get firearms. This is not about hunters, this is not about responsible gun owners looking to protect their family… This is about realizing that there is no good reason to own an assault rifle. If you buy a gun, no matter where or when, you should get a background check. The gun lobby owns many in Congress but they do not own the conscience of the American people.”

“As your Senator I will fight to ensure that no one who works full time will live in poverty, I will fight to raise the minimum wage, get better work scheduling, get paid family and medical leave, I will work towards giving every kid in America an opportunity to go to college without being buried under a mountain of debt, and for the debt that is owed now I will fight to make that burden easier.”

“As your Senator I will fight for retirement with dignity, an expansion of Social Security, Strengthening of Medicare and Retirement accounts, and to reform the ACA.”

“We need stronger laws to govern Wall Street, we need to keep the 1% accountable and when banks get too big they need to be broken up, the people of this country and this state deserve someone who will hold their feet to the fire and make sure they are accountable. We deserve someone who will support trade deals that don’t just favor the big corporations, trade deals that don’t leave you in the dirt and left behind as the gap between rich and poor widens and the middle class disappears.”

“In too many places the poor are getting poorer, families who need help will find essential services cut, they will find healthcare cut and they need to ‘pull themselves up by their bootstraps’ while the boot of the 1% is on their back. Americans trapped in poverty, no hope of a job or education, many turning to drugs and gangs. We as a nation cannot abandon them, and as your Senator I swear I will fight for them.”

“Call it ‘trickle down’, call it ‘supply side economics’ but its the same story, the shining city is for the privileged few not America as a whole. But democrats have always fought for a different vision, a vision of a nation where we pursue new frontiers in education, healthcare, and prosperity, a nation where we all move forward to that new frontier together, where no-one is left behind.”

“Our nation, our republic will not work if we do not get out there and fight for what we believe in. Politicians from the President to the local dog catcher need to hear from you, they hear plenty from the 1% and Wall Street, from Super-Pacs and giant corporations and those who can fill their pockets and campaign chests. If we don’t speak now, make our voices heard, our politicians will ONLY work for the wealthy few.”

I hope that when election day comes you put a check mark next to my name on a ballot, but should you decide that you disagree I hope that you still get involved. Raise the level of debate and discourse, demand the highest standards not just from your elected officials but from those who elect them. Do not take your vote for granted, your country needs you, your nation needs you, and those who do not have the chance to vote need you.”

"Well, that's easy to do. Los Angeles Journal can run a segment, though we would have to obtain several more doctors to fit our stance. About your brother Rod. He did mention that bachelor party, though he wishes to have it to Knott's Berry Farm, correct?" Cox asked him. "If not, I can give him tickets to see the Lakers, if he's interested in basketball."

Even though she was still feeling slightly nervous about what had happened with the Noble bill and her vote there, Stevenson had finally drummed up the courage to dive into Boston itself for her next big rally, specifically near the port itself. She had practically shunned the city since the complete breakdown of her marriage with Thomas and almost complete breakdown of her life there more than four years ago. The topic was one that she had been waiting to try for some time and she was riding off her confidence there to try to calm down her nerves at being back again.

"Hello everyone! It's great to be back in Boston to see you all again. Let's get to it!

Immigration policy is something I want to talk about today, because it's almost never talked about despite how important it is. When we talk about immigration it is almost always just about illegal immigration and the southern border and that situation. That's an issue, but most immigration is legal and our legal immigration system is so important. We are a nation of immigrants. All of you here can probably trace your ancestry back to immigrants. Our biggest national landmark is the Statue of Liberty. and that stands as a welcoming symbol of American freedom to people coming here from far and wide, across the globe. Immigration is important to our national identity and us all growing as a nation, but we never talk about the legal immigration system. I can be a Senator that changes that, and makes immigration reform a centerpiece because legal immigration is too big to be ignored and too important to put to the side. We need to have a system that is welcoming and effective and that can work for everyone and I can be the Senator to lead making these changes.

The immigration system that we have right now is super complicated. If you asked someone on the street how it worked, they couldn't tell you, and I don't think most people here fully understand it. That includes me! When we have a system that's so complicated that we don't know how it works it means two things. People who want to come into America are going to have a really hard time and usually a really long wait, and Congress doesn't do anything about it because it's too complicated for them to mess with, with twenty kinds of visas and systems and programs and checks everywhere. Neither of those is good for anyone. It's time to come together and make a new system that gets us what we want as a country. We want a system that welcomes immigrants who make our country better and is fair and works and is understandable to everyone.

We don't really have just one system right now, we have the visa system and the citizenship system but there's also quotas and a lottery for citizenship and a lot of other things that are complex and don't make sense. Immigration shouldn't be a lottery should it? Making a system that is just random chance doesn't make any sense and it's not a good part of the system, I don't think any of us think a lottery is the best way to run the system, but then it gets worse with the quotas we have. They're artificial and they don't make a lot of sense, just putting up blocks in random places that can keep people who really deserve to come here out for no good reason. To make a new system we really need to make a new system and start fresh with something new. The old system still has old parts from the 1800s, and I think it is at retirement age! Let's make something new that works for today.

The way to make the system that is most fair is a system that is sort of like what our friends in Canada and Australia do with a point system. Not exactly the same as theirs but its an idea that makes a lot more sense than a lottery and quotas. A system with points is one that is fair and effective and fast all in one, and one that is easy for anyone to understand, us, Congress, and anyone applying. People can get in based on merit instead of lucky chance with a lottery or because of having connections with an immigration guy. It's faster than our system and easier to apply and it is clear and fair when everyone knows what the standards are.

Once we have the idea of the point system set up, that is when it is going to be time for a real and deep national discussion about how we want to weigh the different categories. You guys deserve input on that and you're going to get it, but I already have some ideas about how this can go. The citizenship test is something that we can keep but put into the point system so that someone who scores more highly can be a little better off. We want to have points for people who can come here with bright new ideas and plans. People who are going to help start small businesses or make inventions can get points or people who are authors or painters and artists, or scientists and teachers and doctors and athletes. If you have family here in America you can get more points to help bring families together too. But of course there should be some things that make you lose points. If you have a criminal record that's a negative. Maybe if you shoplifted as a kid as just a dumb move and you've been clean that's just a little knock but serious crimes should mean serious penalties and this system can do that. It's a great framework for making a system that is clear and fair and works the way it should and its one that we all can come together to make instead of something so complicated that only a lifelong bureaucrat or Stephen Hawking can understand it.

"But that's not the only part of this plan. We need to have a second part of the legal immigration system and that's the refugee system. We need to make sure that works well, but also that it's separate from immigration, because they aren't exactly the same thing. The refugee system wouldn't be points based but based on need and also finding a place for someone. We don't want to take in refugees and then see that they get left out on the streetside. We'll make it a responsibility of the system that when a group of refugees are being processed that somewhere is found for them to go at the same time. We need to have the system find the people who are truly the most in need and then make sure it works.

Immigrants built this country, we're all immigrant kids from somewhere, except our Native American friends, and we all deserve a better immigration system. That means us and the future citizens of the United States that are still on their way! Immigration is right at the heart of America, and we can't afford to just let it be ignored while the system isn't working. I can be the Senator that can get us a real new immigration system for this great land and great people. Thank you!"

America is a nation of immigrants and it deserves the best immigration system in the world. A new immigration system isn't talked about nearly enough, but something so important needs to be. A new system that does all the best for this country and all our citizens of today and those still coming is what we need!

To celebrate the diversity of America and her immigrants I'm taking a DNA test to find out some of where my immigrant ancestors were from and I'll be publishing the results publicly!

As a refugee from a family of refugees, and as part of an immigrant community, immigration is an issue that hits very close to home. As a country we need to do all we can to encourage legal immigration and discourage illegal immigration. Stevenson is spot on with her proposals regarding immigrants and refugees.

P.S.: Canada also offers a great model for privately-based refugee sponsorship and resettlement.

If you really think that you must call for immigration reform on all levels, then you should have called for legal immigration reform already. You haven't because you're just trying to derail change to the system by pretending that we're can't talk about it.

"happy" to see a real promise of reform long enough to use it to start making self interested partisan attacks and bury the issue.
