Bruke wrote:"That all sounds good. Maybe mask it a little by throwing in Beijing, Moscow, Pyongyang, Tehran, Caracas, and Damascus. That way Hanoi cannot see it as an attack directed solely at them. As much as I hate to admit it, Vietnam is a counter to Chinese influence in the region and certain measures must be taken to preserve that relationship. In fact, let's put all authoritarian regimes on that list. All the world's dictators will know that America will not stand for their human rights abuses.
Sydney nodded in agreement. "And none mentioned are American allies except Vietnam...."
She paused when she heard the Senator speak about targeting all authoritarian regimes. "Ambitious, though your colleagues in Congress would probably give the same argument about other countries that you just gave about Vietnam. No one would object to targeting Pyongyang, Tehran, or Caracas, but may object to target Riyadh or Manila. Perhaps it would be better to start with those regimes you've named, assuming there are not human rights sanctions on them already, and have clear criteria for adding others to the list in the future."

“That’s all from me for now. I want to thank you for doing this, Senator. You don’t know how much this means to the Vietnamese-American community, especially those like myself, in the older generation, who remember the War. And if I may say so, I appreciate that you stand up for the Catholic Church and its values. We certainly need more good Catholics like you in office.”

"Thank you for the suggestion. I will start getting legislation on that passed. We must stand for human rights and dignity, no matter who it pisses off. We must always do the work of our Lord through our offices. It is refreshing to hear someone who appreciates the Church."

Sydney nodded. “Yes, we must. Oh! On that note I was going to pass this along to you. It’s from the Catholic League -I can think of no other organization more committed to the defense of the Church. I have been a longtime member, and I cannot commend them to you enough. When Bob Donavan heard I was heading over to see you, he said to pass along a formal invitation to join. Donald rolled his eyes at Cox's remark. He poured a glass of water for Taylor, handed it to him, then poured himself a glass.
"I need to discuss something that I want from you!"

“With that, I’d better be on my way.” Sydney handed Wilson a small business card with her contact information (name, phone(s), and email). It had been quite a while since she made use of such cards, and it was a sign to her that she was getting what she wanted- to get back out into public life.
She extended her hand, intending for a handshake.

Wilson shakes her hand and leads her out of his office.

America is a nation of immigrants and it deserves the best immigration system in the world. A new immigration system isn't talked about nearly enough, but something so important needs to be. A new system that does all the best for this country and all our citizens of today and those still coming is what we need!

@BayStateGirl
Immigrants of every race and religion helped build America and all of them have made their own unique contributions to the great melting pot. To celebrate the diversity of America and her immigrants I'm taking a DNA test to find out some of where my immigrant ancestors were from and I'll be publishing the results publicly!

@BayStateGirl
I never learned too much about my parents ancestry so I'm expecting surprises. We can all have pride in wherever our ancestors were from, and in how we're all united in diversity as Americans. I'm excited to share with all of you!

As a refugee from a family of refugees, and as part of an immigrant community, immigration is an issue that hits very close to home. As a country we need to do all we can to encourage legal immigration and discourage illegal immigration. Stevenson is spot on with her proposals regarding immigrants and refugees.
P.S.: Canada also offers a great model for privately-based refugee sponsorship and resettlement.

Pretending that the only way we're allowed to change our immigration system is by talking about illegal immigration is exactly what politicians have been doing forever, keeping us from making any real changes!
Kristen Stevenson
@BayStateGirl
Illegal immigration is an issue to talk about but most of our immigration is legal and it's past time politicians stopped ignoring the biggest part of the system! Americans here and Americans still coming deserve a better system and I'm ready to be a Senator who will lead that change!

Scotty Marlowe @BeamMeUpScotty We must call for the reform and betterment of our immigration system across ALL levels, both legal and undocumented forms. To selectively choose one to champion and claim partisan conflict for the other is unfair to immigrants of all kind. We cannot selectively choose how to interpret the American values of being a refuge for the free of the world. ![]() |
Scotty Marlowe @BeamMeUpScotty But let me be clear, I am happy to see bipartisanship support for this subject by Ms. Stevenson. But let us not forget how the records and beliefs of some of those very same advocates, not just Ms. Stevenson, change when immigrants are classified differently. Their beliefs may shift and fluctuate but the humanity of an immigrant does not. Let us remember that. ![]() |

If you really think that you must call for immigration reform on all levels, then you should have called for legal immigration reform already. You haven't because you're just trying to derail change to the system by pretending that we're can't talk about it.
Kristen Stevenson
@BayStateGirl
We see the same excuse again and again when we never get to make any progress in creating a new legal immigration system because someone insists that illegal immigration all we're allowed to talk about!
Kristen Stevenson
@BayStateGirl
Immigration is bigger than illegal immigration and it's insulting to all immigrants when only the smaller illegal portion of immigration is discussed. You're only
"happy" to see a real promise of reform long enough to use it to start making self interested partisan attacks and bury the issue.
Kristen Stevenson
@BayStateGirl
Congress has fought back and forth about illegal immigration for years and I'm ready to work for a solution but I refuse to allow the vast majority of the great immigrants coming to this country be ignored! They deserve representation, and it's time they get it
