Armani Welch was drafted to the Menusa Blues in 2004. Since then, he has remained on the very same team. Welch is a pass general, and his stats show it. In his career, Welch has averaged 12.0 assists per game. He is very unselfish with the ball and is determined to have his team look good. This is what has led him to two championships for the Blues in 2010 and 2016. He is also a two-time MVP winner (2010 and 2016.) With his fairly small size (for a basketball player), Welch prefers to operate outside the paint. This could include shooting three pointers (even contested ones), squeezing in bounce passes, or swinging the ball to the outside for proper ball movement.

The ANBL veteran Jacob Nessal, sometimes nicknamed "Captain J," is a powerful threat from both inside and out. In Abaja's highly anticipated basketball league, Nessal has been named MVP three times in his career so far: Once in 2011, once in 2014 and once in 2018. I his career he has helped the Queens Bullets reach the finals twice (once in 2010, and once in 2014) and led the Bullets to an ANBL championship against Armani Welch and the Blues in 2014. His quick play and effective shooting is what separates him from most domestic players. He is able to slash through defenders relatively easily and create an open shot. His play style is why is constantly gets many playing minutes per game (about 38 MPG in the ANBL at the end of the 2017-18 season.)

#10 SF: Pápá Mouyre

Before he was traded to the Olulawi Fireflames in 2018, Pápá Mouyre had led the Ikeland Speed to two championships (one in 2015, one in 2017.) His major partner in the 2016-17 season was Vangaziland product Chris Parkssen. Parkssen came in as a rookie in the 2016 ANBL draft, and together with Mouyre, they dominated the 2016-17 season. That year, Mouyre averaged 21.7 PPG.
Mouyre is typically a dunker - a strong one at that. That's where most of his points that are in the paint come from. He usually likes going for fancy slams, and though it isn't exactly his forte, he wouldn't hesitate to shoot a few threes either.

#21 PF: Christian Mouton

Christian Mouton has proved his worth quickly. Being in the ANBL for only two seasons (almost three) he has shown that he can get aggressive down in the post. This includes snatching down rebounds, fighting for loose balls and adding in a few blocks. Though he tends to lose the ball, Mouton plays almost like the "old-school" fundamental player, which is surprising because of how young he is. This is his first time being part of the National Team.

#27 C: Joseph Olu

Olu is clearly a guy who many wouldn't want to bother. He's very tall, and very quick. The Abaja City Eagles' star has been a threat since his introduction into the ANBL in 2012. He quickly became one of the best shot blockers in the league, and was always on the hunt for rebounds. In the 2015-16 season, he led the league with 13.5 RPG. In the 2016-17 season, he led again with 14.7. In the 2017-18 season, he led the league again, this time with a whopping 15.2 RPG. He has led the Eagles to three ANBL finals appearances. Though he has still failed to earn a ring, he makes a huge difference to the team with his performance.

After high school, Malik Moussa played college basketball for the University of Heartland, one of the best college basketball programs in Abaja. He stayed for one year, and later entered the 2017 ANBL draft, where he was drafted seventh out of thirty draftees. The team who drafted him? The Kuclaii Flash. His debut season from 2017-18 was good enough to earn the Rookie of the Year award. His strong handles and efficient jumpshot is what pushed him to the award, using his quick hands to get past opponents and often times leaves them looking silly.

#22 SG: Calvin Anelé

Honestly, the only reason why this guy isn't a starter is because Jacob Nessal is just too good. Calvin Anelé is perhaps the best three point shooter in both the National Team and the ANBL. The one-time MVP has provided the Fireflames with efficient sequences of three pointers since his rookie season. He also has two finals appearances with the Fireflames, though he has yet to win a championship for them in his career. He plays with two foreign talents - Ebenezer (San Llera), who was just recently traded from the Callahan Wolves, and Darren Roser (Drawkland), a promising young center who also took part of Drawkland's National Basketball Team.

Standing at six-foot five inches (6'5''), Jordan Asunao is a fairly tall point guard. This is his natural position, but he can often times switch to shooting guard. Though he has a habit of turning the ball over, he makes up for it with his intimidating defense. With his defensive stance he quickly bounces from his toes with the player he guards. He isn't afraid of contact or is he afraid of quick players. Relentlessly, Asunao interrupts passes and open shots, leading to forced turnovers and bad possessions from the opposing team

Stanley Prince-Ochieng, or SPO, started off his ANBL career fairly slow, but had built himself up at a fairly quick pace. Some ANBL fans wonder what a guy like SPO was doing on the Basketball Federation anyway; it's not like he has done anything significant to be on the spot. But new head coach Omondi Guandoya saw in him what many others didn't: his attitude. SPO has a fighter mentality and even when he has a bad game, he puts in the same amount of effort (or more) as playing a great game.

We haven't heard much from Guendouzi; in fact, many Abajans also wonder why this guy was put on the team. However, Theo Guendouzi is a physical player who just came out of Abaja City University, where the panthers went all the way to the semi-finals in the last Abajan college basketball championships. Many from Abaja City and beyond thought that it wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for Guendouzi's passing skills. Though he's a forward, he plays just like a guard, passing, shooting and calling plays.

#24 PF: Jola Nicholson

Jola Nicholson is a defensive powerhouse. Playing with the Eagles, him and his teammate Joseph Olu make it almost impossible for opponents to score in the paint. He flies in for rebounds and is difficult to back down in the post. He has also led the ANBL in blocks before. His primary problem is his foul trouble, which is why Coach Guandoya prefers to keep him on the bench first.

Dedéna Esé, better known simply as Dedéna, is probably one of the strongest footballers around. He stands only at 5'9'' but constantly muscles his way past the defense, forcibly opening space for him to cross toward the middle from the left side or cut in for a shot in the center of the field. Dedéna doesn't exactly have the speed; instead, he lets his strength and shooting power make up for it. He also has very efficient dribbling skills, and if Abaja is ever awarded a penalty, Dedéna is usually the man to take it.

Al-Farouq certainly isn't one of the biggest players on the field, however. Standing only at 5'3'', she may have trouble trying to body her way past defenders on the field. Nevertheless, she is a speedster, and this quick pace of hers is what makes her a threat on the attack. As for shooting, she prefers going low to try and force the goalkeeper to dive low for the ball

In the Abajan National Basketball League, recruiting is now taking place for the 2017-18 ANBL season. The ANBL recruits some of the best young players who just got out of college or high school, a few months before the ANBL Draft takes place in October. The ANBL also recruits foreign players who are out of college or high school so that they may also have their shine in the ANBL. Also in the ANBL, the amount of drafted players has decreased from 40 to 30 (15 in first round, 15 in second round). Abaja Premier League

FOOTBALL: 2017-18 Season
Welcome to the APL! This is the top division of football in the nation of Abaja. A brand new season is here, and once again the APL has equipped new foreign talent during the offseason, along with players retiring and more former payers leaving elsewhere to play for a different league. As you've heard, last season East Han secured the APL Championship with a total of eighteen wins, eight draws and four losses. We don't expect them to do much better as they did in the past season, though, as two of their players (Dedena Ese and Stephen Oyenusi) look to play elsewhere. The APL has also began to allow women to play in the league as well and join with men in their squads.

This upcoming season the APL is going to see a not-so-new face in the league, which is the Addausi Storm, who got relegated to the Ligi ya Pili two seasons ago. This past season they finished off with a deadly twenty-three win record along with five draws and just two losses. Left Winger Gyasi Feyi led Addausi that season with a whopping 28 goals, just over a third of how much the team scored in total. The APL is also going to see a fairly new face in the league as well - Klabu soka Eriensé, or just Eriensé. The team, found in the southwest part of the nation, has been missing from the Premier League for quite a few seasons.

In the 2016-17 RAFL Cup, the Jabola Islanders put a shocking stop to the powerhouse club of East Han. Both advanced to the final round and the Bulldogs won the first leg of the RAFL Cup final 4-3, with the flashy Clovis Ythier-Brown from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec scoring two of the goals. In Leg two, however, the Islanders broke the hearts of Callahan with a 2-0 shutout at Compass Bank Stadium, winning the RAFL Cup with a 5-4 aggregate score. Though the Islanders have the right to celebrate now, it's not over just yet. On August 4, 2017 and August 6, 2017, East Han and the Jabola Islanders will be facing off again in the Abajan Super Cup, a two-legged playoff between the winners of the League (East Han) and the winners of the RAFL Cup (Jabola Islanders). The season will be set to start on ~~August 9th~~ August 11th.

Format: There are 16 teams in the Abaja Premier League, and 16 in the Ligi ya Pili. Every team in the APL and Ligi ya Pili plays the other team twice in the season. Two of the bottom teams from the Abaja Premier League will be automatically relegated, while the top two teams in Ligi ya Pili will be promoted. With the regular season, there is a RAFL cup, consisting of all the 32 teams in the APL and in Ligi ya Pili. It is divided into 6 rounds and then the final.. In the first round, it will be all the teams in the Ligi ya Pili (16) competing. In the second round, the bottom 8 teams in the APL from last season come in along with the round 1 advances. In the third round, the top 8 in the APL from last season will come in along with the round 2 advances. By the fourth round, there will be 8 teams remaining, and the cup carries on. The RAFL cup is played as a single elimination cup competition with the winner advancing to the next round. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, then thirty minutes of extra time is played, divided into two fifteen-minutes halves. If the scores are still tied at the end of extra time the game will be decided by penalty shoot-out. The cup is scheduled to start after week 4. Each round in the RAFL cup will be 3 weeks from each other. Before each season, there is a Super Cup, the Abajan Super Cup. The Abajan Super Cup is a two-leg playoff played between the champions of the RAFL cup and the APL champions. If a team is champion of both the APL and RAFL Cup, they will face off against the runners up in the RAFL Cup.

BASKETBALL: 2017-18 Season
OCTOBER, 2017: Following the end of the 2016-17 ANBL Season, the Abaja City Eagles again came up in top of the league standings, this time with a scary 68-14 record. However, this record wouldn't stop the new champions, the Ikeland Speed, to sweep them later on in the finals for their 6th championship in franchise history. With a new season approaching, the new defending champs are looking to again dominate the West and carry home another title by Summer 2018.

Format: The ANBL has 18 teams and a total of 82 games per season. To reach 82 games, each team must play against each of their divisional opponents 11 times (22 games total) and each team must play against non-divisional opponents 4 times (60 games total). There are two Conferences (Eastern, Western) and six divisions in the ANBL - three divisions in each conference, with each division consisting of three teams. At the end of each season, the top four teams in each conference will advance to the playoffs. During each round in the playoffs, there is a best-of-seven-game series. Whichever team wins four of those seven games first advances to the next round. Below are the lists of divisions in each conference in the ANBL.

Abajan Premier League

FOOTBALL: 2017 RAFL Cup
The RAFL cup consists of all the 32 teams in the APL and in the ASL. It is divided into 5 rounds and then the final. In the first round, all of the teams in the ASL (16) will be competing. In the second round, the bottom 8 teams in the APL from last season come in along with the round 1 advances. In the third round, the top 8 in the APL from last season will come in along with the round 2 advances. By the fourth round, there will be 8 teams remaining, and the cup carries on. The RAFL cup is played as a one-legged elimination cup competition with the winner advancing to the next round from the first round to the semi-finals. In the Final, there will be two legs. If the score is tied after 90 minutes (from round one to semi-finals), then thirty minutes of extra time is played, divided into two fifteen-minute halves. If the scores are still tied at the end of extra time the game will be decided by penalty shoot-out. Each round in the RAFL cup will be 3 weeks from each other.

Abajan Premier League

FOOTBALL: 2017-18 Season
MARCH, 2018: After another completed season in the Abajan Premier League, East Han has again won the league over their 15 competitors, his time with a 53-goal season. Quebecois striker Clovis Ythier-Brown led the way for the Bulldogs, racking up 24 goals in 30 matches.

A surprise to many in the league was APL newcomer Addausi's 47-point finish to end the season, missing out in participating in the Globe Cup by just one point. The team had gotten relegated into the ASL a few years ago and has since been working their way back up. At the end of the 2016-17 season, Addausi finished off with a whopping 74 points and won the ASL, and were promoted to the APL. In their first season back, the Golden Bolts showed no lack of force going for 5th place and topping the 3rd place finishers of last season, Abaja City by one point.

League standings were also much closer than usual this season, with a narrow 5-point differential from 3rd place Ashton City to 8th place Queens. East Han also managed to snatch the league crown from Olulawi United, as they had a higher head-to-head point difference. Coopalo and Heartland and going to enter into the APL after being promoted, and will play their first matches in the big league in August 2018. Meanwhile, Kuclaii and Etehgbebi will again be relegated to the ASL

BASKETBALL: 2017-18 Season
APRIL, 2018: Another exciting year of basketball has come and gone, and yet again the two powerhouses of the east and the west - the Abaja City Eagles and Ikeland Speed - take the crown over their conferences. Playoffs are set to start on April 19, 2018

Jabola Boom seen in the playoffs once again
There are similar faces that are re-entering the playoffs, such as the Eagles, Speed, Falcons, Flames, Bullets and Blues. However, there is a certain team that we have not seen in the playoffs in the past few years - the Jabola Boom. Before this year, the Bombers were in a 3-year playoff drought. The last time the team reached the playoffs was back in 2014, where they would barely slip a spot in for 4th place in the East with a 42-40 record, surviving elimination by just one game ahead of the 41-41 Sakata Capes. Their playoff run didn't last long, though, as they later had to take on the first seed Olulawi Fireflames, who had the best ANBL record at that time (61-21). The Flames would end up knocking them out within six games, and the Boom would never get a taste of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Now, they're back and "Better than ever", says their head coach. Much like 2014, the Boom were barely able to slip out of elimination with a 1.0 game advantage over the Callahan Wolves (44-38) - this is one of the few times you see a team with a record above .500 not being able to make the playoffs. With this momentum heading into the post-season, Jabola now believes that they have what it takes to compete against the Abaja City Eagles, who have already had back-to-back finals appearances the past two years.

Abaja City Eagles: "What will it take to win it all?"
With the Eagles yet again conquering the Eastern Conference for the 3rd straight time, a certain question has begun to arise: "What will it take to win it all?" At the end of the 2015-16 ANBL season, the Eagles had their second franchise-best (not anymore) record of 64-18. It was the first time they reached 60+ wins since the 1986-87 season. Though expectations were soaring for the Olu-led Eagles, the team managed to keep their composure throughout their playoff run and made it to a finals face-off with the Menusa Blues, led by Armani Welch. The Blues came into the finals after knocking off the first seeded Ikeland Speed in the Western Conference Finals. The Eagles pulled ahead in the series with a game 1 victory, but things began too all go downhill from there. The Eagles would late win just 1 of the last 5 games, and their prize would be snatched away as they lost the series 4-2. In the following year (2017), the Eagles were heading into the playoffs with much more confidence. The 68-14 squad cruised past the Eastern competition and found themselves again in the ANBL Finals, this time with the Ikeland Speed, their 1990's rival. Once again, the Eagles failed to get the job done as they were embarrassingly swept by the Speed. With these past two finals failures still in mind, the Eagles are looking at everything they can possibly do to try and quiet down the scarily stacked Western Conference. "It doesn't mean a thing to be the best in your conference if you can't win the big game!" says Eagles' head coach.

LP30: What could've been
Limu Pics (nicknamed "LP30")was probably the most talked about high school player in the country back in 2013. Scoring 26 points per game and a whopping 16 rebounds per game for his high school squad, the 6'10 Power Forward entered the 2013 ANBL Draft as the first pick. By the end of the 2013-14 season,he finished off with 19.9 points per game and 14.1 rebounds per game and led the army of the Smallston Sheriffs (though they still sucked). With such a strong start to his professional career, he left high hopes for the future of the Smallston Sheriffs. However, during his third game in the 2014-15 ANBL season, Pics came down with a terrible leg injury that would leave him off the court for most of the season. He returned in late February of 2015, but man was he different. The coach himself even noticed that he wasn't jumping as high as he used to, and the 19 year old was no longer able to rebound as much as he could. Over time, when it seemed he was improving, he came down with another minor (ish) injury in the 2015-16 season, and another one just after the season ended. Injuries have scattered around his ANBL playing career, and now he big man is averaging only 7.4 points and 6 or 7 rebounds per game. The high hopes of Smallston has now become their downfall, and the still-struggling squad continues to search for more elite young talent. Matthew Palay-Akili, who was drafted by the team in the 2017 ANBL Draft, has so far been quite an answer to their struggles. He had a pretty good season this year, scoring 12.9 points per game and grabbing down 8.4 rebounds per game, along with 4.3 assists. He was also in the race for Rookie of the Year this year (though he didn't win - keep scrolling to find out)

JUNE 2018: In the Abajan National Basketball League, recruiting is now taking place for the 2018-19 ANBL season. The ANBL recruits some of the best young players who just got out of college or high school, a few months before the ANBL Draft takes place in October. The ANBL also recruits foreign players who are out of college or high school so that they may also have their shine in the ANBL. Also in the ANBL, the amount of drafted players has decreased from 40 to 30 (15 in first round, 15 in second round). This list will continued to be edited until October 10. FOOTBALL: 2018-19 Season
AUGUST, 2018: Welcome to the Abajan Premier League. As we approach the beginning of the following season in August, many are on the lookout for certain teams in the APL. One of those teams would be the Islanders in Jabola. The Islanders, who delivered a shocking upset to East Han in the RAFL Cup final in 2016 and finished the 2016-17 season 6th in the league, was at the brink of being relegated to the Secondary League at the end of last season, finishing at 13th place. Concerns now wave over towards the team in fear that the Islanders may become relegated for the first time in almost two decades. Much of the blame was put on Head Coach Nikolas Jokolai, who was fired by the end of the season. The Islanders seemed uncoordinated almost every game last season, and the team only managed to (embarrassingly) score 19 goals in 30 matches, the least goals scored by any team in the league. Pressure towards the Islanders settles in further with the retirement of star player and captain Susma Obicois. However, Islanders new Head Coach Abraham Okar hopes that with the new addition of emerging superstar Uffe Diya from New Gazi will bring a much needed lift on these pressures.

Another team on the look out is, of course, East Han. The Bulldogs have won the league twice in the past two seasons, edging Ashton City by 1 point for first place in 2017 and barely sniffing by Olulawi United with GD advantage just +3 ahead in 2018. They are at the time a popular candidate for topping the league for the third straight time this season. Newly introduced Naomi Volonté has also showed off her impressive capabilities as well, reminding many Callahan fans of past player Delilah D'Shazhi, who now plays in the United States of Devonta.

Another team to look out for this season would be the previous underdogs: The Addausi Storm. They weren't underdogs of the Secondary League in the 2016-17 season; they demolished their competition, winning a whopping 23 out of 30 games in their 4th consecutive year in the ASL at the time. However, through this rout, Addausi was still overlooked by many. As a response, the Golden Bolts sped through the APL standings, topping even the past-dominant clubs such as Abaja City and Jazzville. With a good, unexpected season, Addausi now has the support to remain in the top five - or even top three - in the standings by the end of this season.

Format: There are 16 teams in the Abaja Premier League (APL), and 16 in the Secondary League (ASL). Every team in the APL and ASL plays the other team twice in the season. Two of the bottom teams from the Abaja Premier League will be automatically relegated, while the top two teams in ASL will be promoted. With the regular season, there is the RAFL cup, consisting of all the 32 teams in the APL and the ASL. It is divided into six rounds, including the final. In the first round, all the teams in the ASL (16) will be competing, with all the teams in the APL receiving a bye. In the second round, the bottom 8 teams in the APL from last season come in along with the round 1 advances. In the third round, the top 8 in the APL from last season will come in along with the round 2 advances. By the fourth round, there will be 8 teams remaining, and the cup carries on. The RAFL cup is played as a single elimination competition with the winner advancing to the next round. In rounds up until Final, thirty minutes of extra time is played if the score between teams is tied after 90 minutes. If the scores are still tied at the end of extra time the game will be decided by penalty shoot-out. In the final round, there will be a two-leg playoff between the last two teams. Each round in the RAFL cup will be 3 weeks apart from each other. Before each season, there is the Abajan Super Cup. The Super Cup is a two-leg match up played between the winners of the RAFL cup and the APL champions. If a team is champion of both the APL and RAFL Cup, they will face off against the runners up in the APL.

Abajan National Basketball League

BASKETBALL: 2018-19 Season
OCTOBER, 2018: Welcome the the ANBL. Following the end of the 2017-18 season, the Ikeland Speed won the league with the most wins and the best record (64-18). It was the first time the defending champions had the best record in the league since the 2014-15 season. However, the Speed were unable to repeat their previous season success. In fact, they didn't even reach the finals this past post season. They were able to sweep the Flash 4-0 in the Semi-Conference Finals, but fell 4-2 against the Kingston Falcons, who won the 2018 ANBL Championship. With their finals win, the Falcons have now tied the Queens Bullets and Menusa Blues for the second most finals wins in ANBL history (5), and are now 1 finals win behind the Abaja City Eagles and the Ikeland Speed (6). The 2018-19 season is set to start October 17.

On February 10, 2017, president Ayodele Azikiwe (2014-2018) passed the Athletic Fusion Act, which allowed sporting leagues to combine men and women into the same leagues. The APL, along with the Abajan Football Federation (AFF), professional volleyball and tennis, took advantage of this and thus began assigning men and women into the same squads. The ANBL, however, has yet to incorporate women into the league - and there is a big reason why.

In the ANBL, league expansion has been quite difficult, though in the summer of 2016 it was able to add on 4 extra teams. With the inclusion of female players comes the need for more teams, since no single ANBL team wants to increase their roster past 15 players. There are many players in the AWNBL (Abajan Women's National Basketball League) that play for a total of 16 teams and average out to about 12-13 players per team.

The inclusion of female players into the ANBL would abolish the AWNBL, but this large heap of players could put "a large strain on the league," says ANBL Commissioner. "I know that there are women out there who have enough or more than enough talent to play in the ANBL and allow our league to receive more outside notice, but as of right now it is difficult to do so. We currently have two options: to expand the league or release many players. Many people and players find that second option unfair." There will be more discussion of this matter in June of 2019, which means that the two leagues will remain separated until further notice.

Format: The ANBL has 18 teams and a total of 82 games per season. To reach 82 games, each team must play against each of their divisional opponents 11 times (22 games total). This enhances divisional rivalries. Each team must also play against non-divisional opponents 4 times (60 games total). There are two Conferences (Eastern, Western) and six divisions in the ANBL - three divisions in each conference, with each division consisting of three teams. At the end of each season, the top four teams in each conference will advance to the playoffs. During each round in the playoffs, there is a best-of-seven-game series. Whichever team wins four of those seven games first advances to the next round. Below are the lists of divisions in each conference in the ANBL.

Abajan Premier League

FOOTBALL: 2018 RAFL Cup
The RAFL cup, consists of all the 32 teams in the APL and the ASL. It is divided into six rounds, including the final. In the first round, all the teams in the ASL (16) will be competing, with all the teams in the APL receiving a bye. In the second round, the bottom 8 teams in the APL from last season come in along with the round 1 advances. In the third round, the top 8 in the APL from last season will come in along with the round 2 advances. By the fourth round, there will be 8 teams remaining, and the cup carries on. The RAFL cup is played as a single elimination competition with the winner advancing to the next round. In rounds up until Final, thirty minutes of extra time is played if the score between teams is tied after 90 minutes. If the scores are still tied at the end of extra time the game will be decided by penalty shoot-out. In the final round, there will be a two-leg playoff between the last two teams. Each round in the RAFL cup will be 3 weeks apart from each other.

FOOTBALL: 2018-19 Season
MARCH, 2019: It was all about the newly crowned league champions Olulawi United this year. And why wouldn't it be? With one of their most brilliant seasons in their past 29 years of existence, the Reds have squashed the odds, dethroning the previous APL Champions East Han, who won the league in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018. Losing their two best forwards Yuri Atsi and Kenneth Osomoai to foreign clubs, as well as, according to many, their best defender Jonathan Beddain, many APL fans and analyzers - even Reds fans themselves - thought Olulawi United had no chance this season. They thought that Olulawi United's closest finish to first place in who knows how long would be their second place finish at the end of last season, barely missing East Han with a three-goal-shy goal difference. "A top five finish," some said. "That's probably the best they'll get." They were wrong. With their 54-goal season in the books, the Reds finish off their season with the most goals, the most points and the the least goals conceded in the entire league, and earn their fourth league title in their history. Without question, they deserve all achievements they've got with an effort like that.

[PLAYER SPOTLIGHT] TESS MONTROSE

Tess Montrose, a twenty-nine year old striker from the Free Land of Brenecia, caught the eyes of many followers of the Abajan Premier League, debuting her APL career in stunning fashion. She was bought by Olulawi United from her previous club "Kingsgrove," a club from her homeland Brenecia. Previously, two former stars from Olulawi United had been sold and one released - two of them forwards. Kenneth Osomoai, a young striker who lit up the team's chemistry from his debut season in 2015, was released. Yuri Atsi, sister of Abajan national-teamer Alan Atsi, was a threat on the left wing. She was sold to Tobiasia City in Tobiasia. Jonathan Beddain, the best-known center-back in the league, followed Yuri Atsi to Tobiasia and settled with the Portside Tigers. This all happened in 2018 before the season started. Being aware this, Tess Montrose knew that pressure would be put on her to make up for these vital losses.

The pressure never broke her. She started in every game that she played [28]. She bounced back from a two-week foot injury in week 11 and ended up scoring 21 of the club's 54 goals in the 2018-19 APL season. She also had 14 assists in the season, making her responsible for over half of the goals scored by her new team. She was a blessing in the eyes of the fanatics from Olulawi, and a reliever of the stress that many Olulawians had when their two best players were gone. And she won the golden ball in her rookie season. In the beginning of the season, she started off pretty slow. Only 1 goal in her first 6 games. In her 10th game, she had 5 goals. In her 15th game, 9 goals. In her 20th, 14 goals. She rose quickly, and Olulawi United rose in the league table. Her most spectacular game of the season was against Menusa in week 18, where she scored a hat-trick and had one assist to her teammate Edem Odoawelah, sealing of 5-1 victory at University Stadium. As the season progressed, the better she became, and the more her expectations rose.

Montrose's effort and work ethic is reflected on the field, and already she has earned a big name in a big club in a growing league.

Abajan Secondary League

FOOTBALL: 2018-19 Season
MARCH, 2019: As for the secondary league, the Kuclaii Mountaineers finish off with a whopping 65 points, winning the league and earning promotion back to the Abajan Premier League after just one season. Quick turn around, wouldn't you think? Behind them is a somewhat new face to the APL: Menusa Athletic. Sometimes being insulted as "The Inferior Side of Menusa," by fans of Menusa FC, the club Menusa Athletic was relegated to the ASL in 2012. They've been there ever since. For seven years the Burners from southern Menusa had been ridiculed by the north side Warriors Menusa FC. Well, now the two teams can finally resume their long rivalry next season.

Dell Ujebo, captain of Kuclaii SC, led the ASL in scoring, putting 21 goals on the table. His teammate, Rebi Anaikam, was close behind, finishing off with 17 goals on the season. For Menusa Athletic, Alexis Turay led the team in goals with 15. The team also let in the least goals of the season. Together, the Mountaineers and the Burners will come again the the APL to replace Seaport, a team which narrowly survived relegation two years in a row, and last place Heartland, a team that was just re-introduced to the APL last season.

Hello and welcome to the first edition of "Intense Rivalries," a series of historical sports conflicts which highlights some of the roughest, largest rivalries that have occurred in Abajan sports - from college & professional basketball and pro football (soccer). As events occur and games are played, grudges between certain groups of fans, teams, and/or players can develop. Some of those grudges had turned into great dislike, and thus a rivalry is born.

FOOTBALL RIVALRY: MENUSA FC vs MENUSA ATHLETIC
Today, we will take you into the unique, cold-blooded rivalry between the two current Abajan Premier League teams MENUSA FC and MENUSA ATHLETIC. These two clubs were (of course) located in the same city and in the same state: Crossriver. Unlike many other sports rivalries in Abaja, this rivalry emerged out of political reasons. We find this rivalry convenient to you, the city of Menusa, and the rest of Abaja as of right now because this year, the Menusa Athletic Speeders had just been promoted into the Abajan Premier League, the top football league in Abaja.

Previously, the Speeders had been stuck in the Abajan Secondary League since 2014, being relegated after a 15th-place finish at the end of the 2013-14 APL season. As for Menusa FC, who go by either the Warriors or the Greens (sometimes the Southern Greens), they had been in the Premier League from the years 1974-1988, 1992-1998, 2001-2009 and 2010-present. They had only been in the Secondary League for a few years at a time - and only thrice: from 1988-1992, 1998-2001 and 2009-2010. Menusa Athletic had been relegated four times since it's foundation in 1979. They started off in the Secondary League, after an "Reserve" Policy put into place by APL Commissioner Abioye Sonko-Abdi on July 11, 1975. This occurred because by 1979 (by 1975, really) there were already 16 teams in the APL, and the league didn't want to add more at the moment. Keep in mind that the APL debuted in 1974, with 15 total teams and a 28-game season. In 1975, with the addition of ABAJA CITY FC, the league had 16 teams. These first 16 Abajan football clubs were known as the "Original Sixteen." Eight year later, the APL Commissioner Abioye Sonko-Abdi then decided to set up a new league - the Abajan Secondary League. This was the lower tier of teams. The league debuted in 1984, and started off with 10 teams - Menusa Athletic was one of them.

This was the second season of the APL. Here you see Menusa FC end up in 8th place. Since there is no second league, bottom placers QUEENS and ASHTON CITY don't get relegated. Relegation starts after the incorporation of the Secondary League in 1984.

TENSIONS IN THE CITY
Football was and still is a large part of life in Abaja. Many fans attended each match throughout the season, and many hoped to earn bragging rights for their city. However, in Menusa's case, it was bragging rights for their part of the city, especially with the growing hostility in the northern and southern areas of Menusa in the 1980's and 90's. Starting in 1983, newly-elected president Paul Thamani angered the Democratic western states of Abaja with his conservative policies. The wealthy east, however, favored him. Thamani also passed a law that abolished child labor in the nation. Western Abaja, mostly relying on this practice, retaliated. Many families in the west were poor, and many parents soon began sending their children off to work long, hard hours along with them to try and raise the family income. It relieved some stress on families which was why the practice in the west was encouraged. However, President Thamani found the practice unjust, saying children have gotten sick, severely wounded and even died trying to do work that is supposed to be handled by adults. On August 12, 1986, Thamani prohibited the practice that had taken place in Abaja since 1941. Rapidly, Western Abaja started becoming impoverished. Poor parents from the west couldn't use their chidlren for their aid until they became adults. Meanwhile in the east, corporations such as the Northern Oil Company (founded 1896) and the Lumber County of New Plymouth (founded 1852) prevailed, and jobs filled up there. The western struggles were ignored, and Western Abaja felt as if they were being treated like an entirely different nation, so they decided to split and name themselves the "United Western States" (UWS) in 1987. On October 3, 1988, the Abajan Civil War broke out between the UWS and Eastern Abaja. In the city of Menusa, sitting near the central west, civilians were split on their views. Those from the northern part of the city favored the West, while those from the southern part favored the East. Instantly, those from southern Menusa were viewed as "traitors." Famous Abajan columnist Ekene U. Dubaku even wrote an article titled "Southern Menusa: The Disgrace of the West" (1988).

FIRST MATCH: SOUTHERN GREENS vs SPEEDERS
These conflicts later spread onto the sports grounds. The APL and ASL seasons were still played throughout the Civil War that took place from 1988-1993, but fights and riots broke out almost every game. In Menusa's case, these riots were one of the most violent. At the end of the 1986-87 season, Menusa Athletic was promoted to the APL - the first time they had ever been in the league. In previous years, the Speeders from northern Menusa were mocked and ridiculed for being part of the ASL or the "weaker division." Now, they were with the big teams. On September of 1987, the two teams Menusa FC and Menusa Athletic faced off in a loud, violent match that took place on Lowe Field, the home ground of the Southern Greens. The match took place two weeks after a series of kidnappings and bombings in southern Menusa by terrorists from northern Menusa due to their "betrayal" of the West. Throughout the match, Greens fans would chant and shout "ASL Again!" "ASL Again!" a mocking of Menusa Athletic for being in their season in the APL in their 8th year of existence. The atmosphere grew rougher and the shouting was stronger and more intense. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Menusa FC. The fans shouted with joy. When players from Menusa Athletic left the field, Greens fans immediately began throwing trash and pouring drinks on them. Bottles were even thrown during the match, and 18 spectators - 12 Greens fans, 6 Speeders fans - were ejected for fighting with one another. This was the first match played between the two teams in their history, and this match recieved the third highest attendance in APL history (101,438).

THE RUCKUS OF '88
The behavior of Greens fans would soon come back to haunt them. On January 3, 1988, the second match between Menusa FC and Menusa Athletic was being played, this time at Northmount Arena, near a suburb in northern Menusa. By this time, the United Western States had already been established, which meant tensions grew hotter, as northern Menusa sided with the UWS. Before they even met the pitch, Athletic fans screeched and hollered at the Menusa FC Southern Greens, calling them "The disgrace of the West!" When the Greens left the tunnel, they were spat on, poked, and basically became trash cans. These fans were thrown out immediately. The Greens were booed loudly by Speeders fans and were constantly tripped up by Speeders players. One fight broke out on the pitch when Menusa FC striker Abraham Adesiyan threw a punch at Athletic center-back Jonathan Schooling after he tackled him just outside the box. Adesiyan was red carded and was booed off the pitch. The shaky match later ended in a 0-0 draw. This wasn't the only Abajan football rivalry that emerged in the Civil War Era; APL teams based in the west often fought with APL teams based in the east. Ashton City and Jazzville had their own flares. The Jabola Islanders also made an enemy out of FC Smallston.

As if an unsatisfactory draw against Menusa Athletic wasn't enough, Menusa FC later got relegated into the ASL that same year, finishing dead last in the APL standings. Speeders fans were joyful, and mocked the Greens and their fans. They had their revenge mocks until 1992 when Menusa FC was again found in the APL.

MENUSA ATHLETIC'S DOMINANCE
The two teams Menusa FC and Menusa Athletic faced off in the APL again every year from 1992 to 1998. Twelve league matches were played between them within those years, and the Speeders won nine of them. They greeted their arch rivals in return to the APL with a 2-1 victory at Lowe Field in Week 4, 1992. From that point, the Speeders began speeding past the Greens, both in head-to-head matches and in league standings. Menusa Athletic even placed as high as fourth place by the end of the 1995-96 APL season and won the RAFL Cup in 1994. These successes from Menusa Athletic made the Greens and their fans hold their heads down in shame. The team whom they made fun of for being stuck in the ASL from 1979-1987 was now overruling their own squad. And how about this? Menusa FC got relegated again in 1998. It was now Speeders on top and the Greens below. Though the Abajan Civil War had ended five years before, Speeders fans still nicknamed Menusa FC "Traitor FC" and continued to shout at them during the matches that the Greens played with their team. However, things would slowly begin to turn around for the two teams by the 2000's and 2010's. Stick around for Part 2 of this rivalry to know more!

Abajan National Basketball League

BASKETBALL: 2018-19 Season
APRIL, 2019: Hello and welcome to the ANBL. With another season passed, more of the same from the Abaja City Eagles have occurred. After being dethroned by the Ikeland Speed in the 2017-18 ANBL season, the Eagles have yet again claimed the best record in the ANBL. Speaking of being dethroned, the Kingston Falcons have earned the top spot in the Western Conference, ending the three-year streak from the Ikeland Speed, who had claimed the top spot of the Western Conference since the end of the 2015-16 season.

Major Changes Coming to the ANBL
Before the start of the 2018-19 ANBL season, the league Commissioner Samuel Abeba announced a dramatic change in the ANBL format, which would in turn end up changing the amount of games per season. According to Commissioner Abeba:

The ANBL, for 14 years, has gone by a league format which has been viewed as awfully "weird" and "confusing" by the ANBL universe. The format was meant to intensify rivalries between teams from the same division. However, this format just cannot stick around anymore. It is time to get back to the basic format that had been used from 1973-2003.

That "weird" format was what the league has gone by from the 2003-04 to 2017-18 seasons. It was a format in which the ANBL would go by an 82-game season. It was not, however, a round robin. Before 2016, the ANBL had 14 teams. There were also no divisions; only 2 conferences (east and west) of 7 teams each. A "new format" was introduced and later put into action in 2003. This new format would change the six-round-robin (78 game) season into an 82 "rivalry-packed" game season. To reach 82 games back then, each team would face off against each other team in their conference 9 times and then face off against each team in the opposite conference 4 times. In the 2016-17 ANBL season, this rule changed slightly, as four more teams were added to the league. Now there were 18 teams. The format that took over from 2016-2018 was therefore: "To reach 82 games, each team must play against each of their divisional opponents 11 times (22 games total). This enhances divisional rivalries. Each team must also play against non-divisional opponents 4 times (60 games total)." Now that this format out of the league, the ANBL has again gone by the round-robin format, this time each team in the league playing again each other six times (102 games total.) However, another addition will change the number of games further.

As the great fan interest (and demand) towards the ANBL has expanded over the years, the league is now looking to expand further. In the summer of 2019, two more teams will be added to the ANBL. One will be in the eastern conference and another in the western conference. This will increase the league to 20 teams. The two cities which will be given an ANBL team are the cities of New Plymouth (eastern) and Buhayra (western). A name has already been given to the Buhayra Team: The "Buhayra Northerners." However, Team New Plymouth has no name at this point. There have been a few considered names: Oilers, Invaders, Rangers, Woodsters, Steamers & Rockers. More info will be released of this later on.

A New Leader for the Ikeland Speed
In the summer of 2018, Ikeland Speed & ANBL superstar Pápá Mouyre was traded to the Olulawi Fireflames. The Speed's captain was now out of town. In response, the city turned their eyes toward another promising star: the Vangazi center Chris Parkssen. The powerhouse center was drafted in 2017 and has already proven to be one of the most dominant forces in the league. This is no surprise. Vangaziland has been known for their successes in the International Basketball Championships. They were the champions of IBC 26. The nation, clearly, produces the best basketball prospects, and Abaja took advantage two years ago.

Going back to Chris Parkssen, the big man has led the Speed to a second-place finish, and has also earned the Defensive Player of the Year award. Though the Speed are no longer "The Kings of the West," the Vangaziland product has definetly opened the eyes of many ANBL fans.

Abaja City Eagles 3 - 1 Olulawi Fireflames
EASTERN CONFERENCE SERIES RIVALRY
The 2018 ANBL Finalists, the Olulawi Fireflames, are on the verge of being eliminated from the first round against the Abaja City Eagles. The Flames had eliminated the Eagles in the ANBL Semifinals/the Eastern Conference Finals last year, so revenge against the Flames would be a satisfying sense of payback. The San Lleran, Ebenezer, has so far tried all he could to try and bring the Fireflames a crucial uplift, but even with Joseph Olu and Jola Nicholson out of the Eagles and into the IBC, the Eagles have seemed to dominate this series thus far, having a commanding 3-1 lead after 4. There's still some more games to play, but the Flames are in desperate need of some momentum. After winning their first game at Abaja City, they have led some Eagles fans into thinking that "more of the same" will occur like last year. That isn't the case now, however. The Flames have been losing since that night.

Queens Bullets 2 - 2 Callahan Wolves
EASTERN CONFERENCE SERIES
After being knocked out of the first round of last year's ANBL playoffs, the Queens Bullets are looking to push forward further, into the deeper rounds and later to the Final. The Royal Blues are now out for blood, but they just can't seem to shake off the Callahan Wolves. So far the series is tied 2-2, and has so far been dominated by the Wolves' forward Náná Mdamnbe and crafty point guard Ellison Crossriver. In this series, Mdamnbe has averaged 18 PPG for the Wolves, along with 11 RPG. The Nessal-less Bullets, on the other hand, have been led by the young point guard Weston Ebo. He has brought about 14 PPG for the Bullets. The most exciting games of this series so far was game 3, where the Wolves pulled off a magnificent 17 point comeback in the second half to force overtime. They did end up losing a tough one, though, on their home court.

Many ANBL fans didn't think that the short-handed Smallston Sheriffs would even pull off a single win after the first four games against the Falcons, the defending champs. Somehow, they managed to, and on the Falcons' court! However, after drawing the series in game 2, the Sheriffs haven't been able to do much. The ANBL veteran, Alenau Eryenu, has tried leading the very young Sheriffs team, but they can't seem to pull through. Some games that they lost weren't even close. Two blowouts - one at home - have diminished their confidence. But they still have a chance.

This series by far is one of the more shocking ones that the ANBL has witnessed. The Menusa Blues, for the first time in who knows how long, have been swept clean in a series. And the scores reflect that they didn't really have any chance of winning a match and at least make this disastrous series a bit more competitive. This series has led many to believe that it is not the Falcons or Eagles to be feared, but perhaps the Speed themselves. The Vangazi rebounding machine Chris Parkssen and point guard Cameron Ahouré have carried the Speed throughout the first round sweep. Parkssen in this series has averaged in this series 13 PPG and 12 RPG. Ahouré has averaged 20 PPG and 7 APG. That's a total of 33 out of the 88 points in which the Speed have averaged this series. With no more games to play between the two, the Speed wait to see who they will be facing off against in the ANBL semifinals - the Falcons or the Sheriffs.

EASTERN CONFERENCE SERIES RIVALRY
Eagles win series 4-1
Revenge complete. It only took one more win since the last series evaluation for the Abaja City Eagles to secure a 4-1 series win over their long time rivals, the Fireflames. In game five, the Eagles finished off the series on their home court at the Wallis Center, thrashing the Flames with a final score of 90-61. After losing four games in a row, the 2018 ANBL finalists walk home empty handed once more, exiting the playoffs in the first round.

Queens Bullets 2 - 4 Callahan Wolves

Wolves win series 4-2
With their series win over the Queens Bullets, the Wolves become the only team in the 2019 ANBL playoffs who have beaten a higher ranked team. The Bullets, finishing second in the East, thought at first that this series against the third seeded Wolves would go mostly to their favor. Little did they know that they would end up losing the last three games of the series after having a 2-1 series lead. They did put up a fight in this series, though, especially in games five and six, where the Wolves beat them by a mere four points each time. This series was perhaps the closest ANBL playoff series this year thus far. Out of the six games that these two teams played, only two of them have ended in wins/losses greater than four points.

Falcons win series 4-1
As expected, the Kingston Falcons have put an end to the Sheriffs' playoff run with a convincing 4-1 series win. Smallston, being dominated in the series, goes home. Kingston, on the other hand, continues their march toward the ANBL Finals, which is only a couple of rounds away. In the Western Conference Finals A.K.A. the ANBL Semifinals, they will face off against the Ikeland Speed. The Speed will now get their playoff rematch against the Kingston Falcons after the Falcons in the 2018 ANBL Semifinals eliminated the Speed within six games, putting an end to the hopes of the Speed having a second straight finals appearance. This series will perhaps be the most important one this post season. The last two ANBL Finals champions will face off.

Eagles win series 4-1
After the return of the dominating duo of Joseph Olu and Jola Nicholson, two big men who played for the Abajan national team, the Abaja City Eagles continue their dominance, both in the regular season and post season. So far the Eagles have gone 8-2 in the 2019 ANBL Playoffs, and their efforts have again pushed them into the ANBL Finals - the third time since 2016. Based on their play, and their past ANBL finals appearances, you could say the Eagles are out for blood. After all, they were denied a championship in 2013, 2016 and 2017 - their last three finals appearances. With the leadership of Joseph Olu, who averaged 16 PPG and 12 RPG in this series, the Eagles just may break the curse.

Speed win series 4-2
A battle between the past two ANBL Champs! Though the Falcons managed to put up a fight, the Bhenti Baptiste-and-Farai Akpan-led squad couldn't outlast the Chris Parkssen led Speed. This playoff run so far for the Speed has been, like the Eagles, very impressive. They were able to sweep the third seeded Blues 4-0 and then toppled the first seeded Falcons 4-2. As a result, the Speed and the Abaja City Eagles will get a rematch in the ANBL Finals, a continuation of the first battle between the two teams in 2017, in which the Ikeland Speed embarrassingly swept the Eagles 4-0.

Abaja City Eagles vs Ikeland Speed

The ANBL Finals have come into place once again, and once again the Eagles and Speed have managed to meet in the ANBL Finals for the fifth time in each of their franchise histories. These two teams have in fact met in the finals more than any other pair of teams have, and one should soon sense that these frequent appearances would spark a rivalry between to two teams. Some say the rivalry already started in the 1990's.

Let's backtrack to the first time these two met in the ANBL Finals. In 1994, the Eastern Conference champions, the Abaja City Eagles, faced off against the Western Conference champions, the Ikeland Speed. Having the strong offense, the Eagles managed to snatch the trophy without much resistance from the Ikeland Speed, putting them in place towards a 4-1 series victory. That was their third championship, and their second straight championship at the time (they had beaten the Kingston Falcons 4-2 in the 1993 ANBL Finals.) In 1995, the two teams met again. The 1995 ANBL Championship to some viewers, especially Speed fans, were highly controversial in terms of refereeing. After the Speed had secured a 2-1 series lead after three, the Eagles managed to pull forward with three close victories. Speed fans were again disappointed. And angry.

Abaja City Eagles fans, on the other hand, increasingly had more and more reasons to gloat. By 1995 they had won their 4th ANBL Championship, and secured a three-peat. Their opponents had only two by that year. After back-to-back losses in the Finals by the Ikeland Speed, they finally bounced back to win their third championship in 1996. It wasn't against the Eagles, however. The Eagles were eliminated in the second round (A.K.A the Conference Finals) by the Jabola Boom. The Speed easily swept the Buckers of Jabola 4-0. The Eagles, one year later, showed the Speed that they could do the same thing. They won the 1997 ANBL Championship against the Menusa Blues. The Speed weren't able to make it. In 1998, the Eagles-Speed drama continued. The Speed pulled off their ever finals victory over the Eagles, beating them 4-2 in the series, and marking their finals record against them 1-2 overall. The 90's were, indeed, the time of Eagles and Speed dominance.

After 1998, neither team was able to make the ANBL Finals until 2011, when the Abaja City won their 6th (and last) championship against the Kingston Falcons. It took them seven games to do so. Two years later, the Falcons got revenge, beating the Eagles in seven games. In 2015, the Ikeland Speed, having the best record in the Western Conference, raced towards the ANBL Finals where they took on the Jacob Nessal - led Bullets. The Queens Bullets were unable to win their second straight title, as the Speed defeated them in six. By that time, both teams had a finals victory in the 2010's era. In 2016, the Eagles tried to bring another title back home, but were stopped by the Menusa Blues. They got another opportunity in 2017 when they faced the - guess who - Ikeland Speed. The 2017 ANBL Finals were absolutely sloppy for the Eagles. They dominated the regular season that year, but by the time the finals came around, nothing seemed to go their way. Eagle's star Joseph Olu struggled from the free throw line. Michael Disung couldn't hit his three pointers. Abeni Alméré was getting rebounded over by smaller Speed players. The Eagles were crippling themselves. If they had played as well as the Speed, they probably would've pulled the series off, instead of getting embarrassingly swept in the finals. Ikeland Speed all-star player Pápá Mouyre led the way for Speed City that year, along with point guard Cameron Ahouré, who led the team in assists with 10 per game. Vangaziland rookie Chris Parkssen also played quite a role in that series (he plays an even bigger one now.)

Now, for the fifth time in ANBL history, the Speed and the Eagles have met again, this time with the Eagles taking home court advantage due to finishing off the 2018-19 ANBL season with the better record. However, so far in this series, after four games, the Eagles are again struggling to defeat the Ikeland Speed. They are already down 1-3 in the series! Another ANBL Finals loss for the Eagles would be disastrous, as this possible series win for the Speed would give the Eagles their fourth consecutive finals loss. They've already lost in 2013, 2016 and 2017, the last three times they've reached the finals. Their luck is running out. An already impatient Joseph Olu is scratching for a title. Since joining the Eagles in 2012, he has failed this task three out of three times. Lord knows if he can tolerate a fourth.

The Ikeland Speed's new captain, Chris Parkssen, has made a huge statement in the regular season after the departure of their previous star Pápá Mouyre. He's made a name for himself in the city, and continues to show his force in the ANBL Finals. He has been able to successfully contain Joseph Olu on defense, though Olu still manages to get more rebounds than him. Parkssen leads the Speed in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per game this series. His highest scoring game so far this series was 29 in game two, when the Speed snuck past the Eagles after a 4th quarter 14-point comeback. Assisting him were his teammates Alfred John-Melda, who has averaged 12 points per game and 6 rebounds per game this series. The assist general Cameron Ahouré has also helped dish out about 8 assists per game.

Though the series seems strongly in the Speed's favor thus far, this series has actually been close. In game one, the Speed won by five points, and again by three points in game two. In game four, they defeated the Abaja City Eagles by just one single point, 72-71. The only game that wasn't close was game three, where the Eagles bulldozed the Speed on their home court, beating them 87-60. Olu scored 31 of those points for the Eagles.
