December 1st, 2018 marks 100 years of Icelandic sovereignty! While the Iceland we know today, The Republic of Iceland was not formed until the 1940s, December 1st 1918 was the year when Iceland officially became the Kingdom of Iceland, under the Danish Crown. This is also one of the few days parliament is open to the public. At this time, Iceland was also one of the poorest countries in Europe, along with having little to no infrastructure and many people still living like vikings. The Icelandic flag that we have today was created at this time to represent the new country, which functioned much like the commonwealth today (is de facto independent, but has the Danish monarch as head of state)How do non-Icelanders feel about this, how far do you think we’ve come in 100 years, and is the future of Iceland hopeful?
I think that we have developed more than any country in Europe in this time, we went from being extremely poor to a first world country in a hundred years. I do think the future of Iceland is hopeful, as the country is still recovering from the 2008 financial crisis, and there is still much to be done with improving the infrastructure in the rural areas.

You had it right when dealing with thr bankers- jailing them. The consequences wern't piled on your people in the form of austerity and you recovered well. Congratulations.
I think being a small nation also benefits you. That seems to make the government act in the interest of the people rather than corporations and have more faith in the potential and versatility of its populace unlike say Britain(where people are viewed more disposably).

Apparently, it's OK to be jailed for bad business decisions if the government considers you big enough.

Funny thing, since the population is so low, you often personally know most celebrities/politicians/businesspeople, but yeah, Iceland is probably one of the sparsest European nations

I mean, the entire nation has less people than Malta, a tiny island country that most people forget exists.

Akureyri is way too stormy for me, growing up in Kópavogur
Also the population is so low in those cities that Akureyri doesn’t really have a downtown area, as it is basically all suburbs
