“Never believe that [fascists] are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The [fascists] have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

It was never going to be handled discreetly. Even if democrats would agree not to announce that Kavanaugh had been accused of this, republicans wouldn't investigate it.

The issue isn't how public it's been; It's that democrats view sexual assault allegations as a serious problem (Franken, Conyers) while republicans don't (Kavanaugh, Trump).

Seems like when Democrats try to be the adults they lose badly.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be proof of a pan-Islamic plot and Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand, crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of mentally ill lone wolves who do not represent their professed belief system at all.
The probability of someone secretly participating in homosexual acts is directly proportional to the frequency and loudness of their publicly professed disapproval and/or disgust for homosexuality.
If Donald Trump accuses an individual of malfeasance without evidence, it is almost a certainty either he or someone associated with him has in fact committed that very same malfeasance to a greater degree.

In the short term, maybe. The more republicans become the 'pro-abuser' party, the more women and young voters will hate them. Republicans have been able to use voting laws, gerrymandering and higher turnout from evangelicals to avoid the predictions of a permanent democratic majority (which will never really happen) but republicans will pay a long term price for this. Democrats will nominate more liberal judges and be more obstructionist while college educated women will be happy to give them the power to do that. Also, democrat voters are now even more likely to back packing the court.

1. They're not the accusers, they don't have to substantiate them.

Since when are republicans the pro abuser party last I checked non of what Kavanaugh was accused of was corroborated by anyone including the FBI and its many background checks. Plus how many people who were caught up in the metoo movement lived in Democratic states let's see https://www.vox.com/a/sexual-harassment ... iam-jacoby oh look most of these people are either liberals, or live in democrat controlled states. Now who's the pro abuser party?
